VICTORIAN YULETIDE: A NEW YORK STATE CHRISTMAS NOVEMBER 23 THROUGH DECEMBER 30

Celebrate the holiday season with a visit to the Museum of Art’s annual Victorian Yuletide, opening Friday, November 23, in Fountain Elms. This year’s exhibition is a showcase for A New York State Christmas. New York legalized the celebration of Christmas in 1848 and the state led the way in the adoption and promotion of holiday traditions that are still observed today.

The bedroom is the backdrop for A Visit from Saint Nicholas, which was published anonymously in 1823. Once attributed to Clement Moore (1779-1863), this holiday favorite is now thought to have been written by Henry Livingston (1748-1828), a Poughkeepsie veteran of the Revolutionary War. The installation features sugar plums, stockings hung with care, and toys that were once owned by the original children of the house, Rachel and Maria Williams.

Victorian Yuletide, Fountian Elms Parlor

Then, as now, Macy’s in New York City was a retail leader for holiday shopping. In 1867 the department store remained open until midnight on Christmas Eve, setting a shocking single-day sales record of $6,000. In 1874, Macy’s featured its first Christmas-themed window display of dolls. The Fountain Elms parlor is outfitted with tables boasting gift suggestions for men, women, and children of the era.

In an exciting, unprecedented turn, a Christmas tree strung with electric lights is the showpiece of the library. In 1882, inventor Edward H. Johnson, Vice-President of Edison Electric Light Company (forerunner of ConEd), had 80 red, white, and blue light bulbs about the size of walnuts strung together and wrapped on his Christmas tree in New York City. The colorful palette is carried throughout the room.

The flurry of the season includes visiting, so the dining room will be set with an appropriately show-stopping centerpiece and the charming holly-patterned tea set owned by the Proctors.

Museum of Art RECENT ACQUISITION IN MEMORY OF HELEN GANT Naturalistic motifs flourished in mid-19th-century arts as craftsmen embraced the Rococo Revival style, drawing inspiration from French sources.

The Museum of Art’s collection has many fine examples of furniture in this style, but, until recently, it lacked a hallmark example of Rococo Revival silver. Thanks to the generosity of the family and friends of Helen Gant, the Museum was able to acquire a fine example of American silver as a lasting tribute to Mrs. Gant who worked in the Museum’s decorative arts department from 1984 to 2002, contributing to many projects—authoring school tours, assisting with exhibitions and publications, and lecturing on topics such as the Victorian language of flowers.

Grapevines and swirling tendrils cascade over the body of this silver masterwork. The kettle bears the label of Ball, Black & Co., one of New York City’s finest period purveyors of silver, jewelry, and fancy articles. While the engraved initials imply the kettle was a gift, the original owners are unknown. Still, one can assume that this kettle graced a carefully set tea table. As a fashionable status symbol, the kettle would have been used at formal teas, where the behavior was carefully prescribed by strict decorum.

ART STORY A POP-UP STORYTIME Wednesday, November 7 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Free and open to the public Art Story is an enhanced storytime experience. Children ages 3 to 5 look for visual cues in picture books, and then apply these skills to works in the Museum of Art. The Art Story program is offered monthly from September through June on the first Wednesday of the month.

Notable publisher, editor, winemaker and author Carlo DeVito presents a talk on his book, A Mark Twain Christmas, recounting the remarkable wit and wisdom of American storyteller Mark Twain.

ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION THE INDIAN CRAZE Friday, December 14, Noon Elizabeth Hutchinson, Associate Professor of Art History, Barnard College, Columbia University, New York, N.Y. Free and open to the public Art historian Elizabeth Hutchinson unpacks the passion early 20th-century Americans had for collecting Native American baskets, blankets, and bowls, and displaying them in their homes.

She links this phenomenon to the transformation of modern art in the United States.

Performing Arts Events KEYBOARD CONVERSATIONS SHOWS A LIGHTER SIDE OF BEETHOVEN The 2018-2019 season of Keyboard Conversations® continues at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 10 in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium. Jeffrey Siegel’s next program, The Joyous Music of Beethoven, will explore some of the cheerful music of the celebrated composer. There’s more to Beethoven than those four infamous and ominous notes (bum-bum-bum-BUM). Jeffrey Siegel reveals some surprising facts about the great composer. Who was Theresa and what did she do to inspire her own Sonata? For whom did he compose the Farewell Sonata and why was he so deeply affected by their departure? Mr. Siegel will also explore the composer’s energetic Polonaise and the hilarious Rage Over a Lost Penny. Yes, Beethoven was funny. Who knew?

The extremely popular Keyboard Conversations format offers listeners the opportunity to discover the influences that affected the creation of the music presented. Mr. Siegel shares details about each composition that lead the audience to realize the subtleties and intricacies of these great works. The evening concludes with a session of questions and answers with Mr. Siegel.

Saturday, November 10 with Marnie, composer Nico Muhly’s second new opera for the Met. This gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s novel, set in the 1950s, is about a beautiful, mysterious young woman who assumes multiple identities. Director Michael Mayer and his creative team have devised a fast-moving, cinematic world for this exhilarating story of denial and deceit, which also inspired a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her—with disastrous results. Robert Spano conducts.

Emmy Mikelson and Charlotte Becket, Installation Shot Displaced Plan, Interactive installation with kinetic sculptural forms, projection and audio, 2017 The PrattMWP Gallery is pleased to host Brooklyn artists Emmy Mikelson and Charlotte Becket in their collaborative exhibition.

Using interactive sculptural forms and video to create a mirage-like hybrid landscape combining physical and digital space, Emmy and Charlotte challenge the dichotomy of both near and far, the tangible and the mirage, and the landscape and the hallucination in their installation.

Charlotte Becket lives and works in New York City. She attended Hunter College’s MFA program and received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Exhibitions include LEAP in Berlin, Museo de Arte de Sinaloa in Culiacån, Mexico, Gazelli Art House in London, and the Invitational Exhibition at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City. She has been invited to lecture on her work at various galleries and universities and has been the recipient of grants from The New York Foundation for the Arts, Socrates Sculpture Park, The Joan Mitchell Foundation, and The Tony Smith Foundation. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, TimeOut London, ArtForum, and Art in America, among others.

Emmy Mikelson is an interdisciplinary artist living in New York City. Recent video screenings include Trani, Italy; Mexico City, Mexico; and Espoo, Finland. In fall 2016, she participated in the Labverde science and art research residency at the Adolpho Ducke Rainforest Reserve, Manaus, Brazil. In summer 2017, she was awarded new media arts residencies with collaborator Charlotte Becket, at Signal Culture (Owego, NY) and CultureHub (La MaMa Gallery, NYC). She has published work in several experimental architecture journals including Nova Organa and Moinopolis, and co-authored with Katherine Behar, And Another Thing: Nonanthropocentrism and Art (punctum books, 2016). She was an invited speaker at the Center for Transformative Media at Parsons, NY; Maysles Cinema, Harlem, NY; Pace University, NY; and a guest curator for the James Gallery at the Graduate Center (CUNY).

Dr. Maney was previously Individual Giving Manager at Bassett Healthcare Network, Cooperstown, where she secured more than $1 million in grant and foundation support and developed a portfolio of major donors, generating multiple individual gifts of $10,000-$25,000.

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute is a fine arts center serving diverse audiences through three program divisions—Museum of Art, Performing Arts, and School of Art. The Institute also offers an art research library, an active membership program, a Museum Shop, Terrace Café, and outstanding rental facilities ideal for public programs and private events.

MWPAI receives funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The following areas are accessible to the physically challenged: Museum of Art Galleries, Auditorium, and Sculpture Court, Art Odyssey: Interactive Gallery, Museum Shop, Art Reference and Music Libraries, Performing Arts Office, School of Art Gallery, Studio D, and the Pottery Studio, the Academic Center, and Student Center.
