Music Legend Chicago is Joined by the Utica Symphony Orchestra For a Magical Night November 5 • 8 p.m.

T

he Great Artists Series presents an exciting night packed with hits when one of the longest-running groups in rock history is joined on stage by the Utica Symphony Orchestra, 8 p.m.

Tuesday, November 5 in the Stanley Theater. Beginning with 1970’s Make Me Smile, Chicago® has enjoyed an incredible string of 21 Top 20 singles, including Saturday in the Park, If You Leave Me Now and You’re the Inspiration. They’re the first American band to chart Top 40 albums in five consecutive decades and Billboard's highest charting American band of all time.

Legends of Folk/Rock and Country Unite November 10 • 7:30 p.m.

olk/rock legend Roger McGuinn of The Byrds joins forces with fivetime Grammy winner, Marty Stuart and his band, the Fabulous Superlatives 7:30 p.m. Sunday, November 10, in the Stanley Theater for an explosive celebration of roots music.

Two legends, Byrds founder and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Roger McGuinn takes the stage with five-time Grammy Award winner Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives to perform Byrds’ classics (Mr. Tambourine Man, You Ain’t Going Nowhere and Turn, Turn, Turn) as well as personal favorites from both Roger and Marty. This concert is borne out of Stuart’s weekly TV show and combines a bit of the Grand Ol’ Opry with the ‘60s Sunset Strip to celebrate foot-stompin', tail-shakin', honky tonkin', music.

Cindy Buckley Koren will share her extraordinary personal experience with Robert Indiana during a visit with the artist. The presentation will cover the artist’s connection to Utica, including a preview of the artwork he created at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute as a student in 1947. Koren will also discuss the artist's identity creation, iconic artwork, copyright protection, and ascension to legendary status.

Installation Explores Atmospheric Effects on the Psyche Sam Van Aken: A Hole in the Sky November 9, 2013 through February 23, 2014

A

rtist Sam Van Aken ponders the ineffable and the possibility of transforming matter in a way that might be described as miraculous. He invites us to contemplate questions such as: how to represent (or, more accurately, present) that which is imagined or based on belief? For MWPAI, Van Aken is thinking about weather patterns, and altering them: what are atmospheric effects on the body and on the psyche? If they are oppressive, can the atmosphere be altered to uplift the spirit?

Van Aken’s Sculpture Court Project, A Hole in the Sky, is comprised of two components, Acadia and Smell of a Storm, which attempt to create a new atmosphere or aura within the Museum of Art. For Acadia, he fills the Edward W. Root Sculpture Court with 10-foot weather balloons that are inflated with air from Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, Maine. During the course of the exhibition, as the balloons deflate, the Museum will be suffused with this sea air, like an inspiration, and the atmosphere will be modified. For Smell of a Storm he creates conditions for another kind of atmospheric sensation, that of inducing the ecstatic aura that precedes seizures or migraines.

And perhaps most important to A Hole in the Sky, during the course of the exhibition, Van Aken would like to create above the Museum a punch hole (also called a fall streak hole), with a small plane in a kind of reverse-skywriting process that is related to cloud seeding, the 20th century’s answer to weather modification. For Sam, it is a method to pierce the late-autumn or winter clouds that dominate Central New York so as to create an unobstructed connection between Earth and sky above, like a miraculous connection.

Sam Van Aken is Associate Professor at Syracuse University, where he is head of the sculpture program. He is represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York, and has exhibited his work internationally.

Victorian Toy Story:

A Children’s Christmas

his season, the annual Victorian Yuletide exhibition will celebrate a children’s Christmas. During the period commonly referred to as the Victorian Era, 1837-1901, Christmas developed from a quiet holiday to a major, family-centered celebration. At the heart of Christmas, then as now, are children.

German putz, or farm scene, will be focal points of this festively decorated setting.

The period rooms will be filled with some of the finest porcelain and silver from the Museum’s holdings. The Museum’s toy collection will be showcased in the Terrace Gallery. Miniatures, dolls, doll furniture, and games once played with

by Rachel and Maria Williams Proctor will delight the young and the young at heart.

Tour the Museum’s stunningly decorated period rooms and experience a fancy children’s Christmas party—from an afternoon meal of tasty goodies served in the dining room to the jovial games and activities, such as bobbing for apples and shadow puppets, in the parlor. A Christmas morning, with glittery gifts and Christmas treats, will be showcased in the library. A tabletop tree and an imported

American Christmas celebrations are drawn from many cultures. Each year the Museum’s Victorian Yuletide exhibition offers carefully researched representations of the origins of many of today’s holiday customs. During this holiday season, enjoy the spirit of a Victorian Christmas with a visit to the Museum’s period rooms. The Victorian Yuletide exhibition will be on view through January 5. definitely

T

he Museum of Art proudly announces the acquisition of Fragments from the Wheels of Ezekiel (nos. 13, 6, 10, and 8), by John Knecht, video artist and retired professor from Colgate University. These Fragments are in digital video and presented on four flat-screen monitors, on view in the Cardamone Gallery through March 30, 2014. They are from a larger series featuring Knecht’s hand-drawn animations that are inspired in part by the hallucinatory imagery described in the Book of Ezekiel.

Knecht’s imagination runs wild in these funny, odd, Fragments. He has a straightforward, even blunt, drawing style and uses bright colors that invite comparisons to comics. He draws scenes based on his own life and memories of growing up in Wisconsin, so there is an everyday-ness to his images, but then . . . something weird happens to fly by or bounce around or change into something else and you suspect you are no longer in Wisconsin, or even Kansas. Or perhaps you have simply pulled the proverbial curtains back far enough to see under the surface of appearances.

Dancers Making News at MWPAI

T

he MWPAI Dance Program is honored to announce that two students have been accepted into prestigious ballet training schools in New York City: Anna McEvoy-Melo, 16, of Little Falls, has returned to Ellison Ballet in NYC where she will receive meticulous training under Director Edward Ellison, with whom she trained during the summer of 2012. Anna will maintain a close connection with the Dance Program at MWPAI and hopes to appear in future productions of The Nutcracker. Alex Waterbury, 15, of Old Forge, began training in September at the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet Company. Alex had recently completed two years of study at the Nutmeg Ballet, a high school conservatory for pre-professional ballet dancers. She began dancing at MWPAI as a child and often returns to the school to study and maintain her childhood friendships. Both ballet dancers received their ballet foundation training from Lynn Bollana and Nancy Long.

This fall, the recipient of MWPAI’s Vinnie Coluzza Scholarship is Zhani James, 11, from Utica. Zhani was discovered by Nancy Long at WatsonWilliams Elementary School during an Arts-in-Education residency where students were preparing to see a performance of African Dance and Drumming by Biboti Ouikahilo. Zhani has studied jazz and tap under the supervision of Kathy Ryan and Sharon Warncke and performed for the first time at Wellin Hall, Hamilton College during the 2013 Annual Spring Dance Concerts. Zhani was chosen for this scholarship based on his potential and his dedication to studying dance. The Vinnie Coluzza Scholarship Fund was created to honor our long-time MWPAI tap instructor and inspirational teacher for generations of dancers in the Utica area. Vinnie would often meet students in schools who she thought had a gift for dance and would support and encourage them to study dance at MWPAI and other local dance schools.

Enjoy Popular Piano Classics with Keyboard Conversations November 2 • 8 p.m.

P

opular Piano Classics will be showcased as Keyboard Conversations® with Jeffrey Siegel continues 8 p.m. Saturday, November 2 in the Museum of Art Auditorium. This will be an entire program comprised of familiar masterpieces by beloved composers including Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and others.

The extremely popular Keyboard Conversations format offers listeners the opportunity to discover the influences that affected the creation of the music being presented. Mr. Siegel shares details about each composition that lead the audience to realize the subtleties and intricacies of these great works. The evening concludes with a session of questions and answers with Mr. Siegel.
