Intro To Oil Painting Portraiture
In executing a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Students are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model and learning basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch to then transfer and complete an oil painting. Students will walk out with a finished painting and a wealth of knowledge accumulated for exploring classical techniques. This class is ideal for those who are beginners to painting or others specifically wanting to develop figure painting or oil as a medium.

Master Copy Class at Fountain Elms
This class celebrates intensive technical study, problem solving, and dialog with artists and artworks of the past. It builds on a long-standing tradition of working from close observation of a masterpiece in a museum's permanent collection. Artists will receive personalized instruction in oils and the unique opportunity to utilize artworks from the Museum of Art's collection. Students will copy either still lifes or portraits of the Institute's founding family. This is an unrivaled creative opportunity to paint from masterworks in Central New York. Due to limited access, students must declare preference to work from figure/portrait or still life at the time of registration. All paintings are 19th century masterworks from the MWPAI collection. The first two classes are held at the Studio Building working on preparatory sketches. The remaining six classes will take place in the Fountain Elms galleries. Some previous knowledge of oils is required. Sarah Wenzler, American (active c.1860-69), Still Life, c.1860-69, oil on canvas, 14" x 17", Gift of Mrs. John W. Calder, 68.56
