Message from the President

The arts are the strongest of all human expressions, communicating our emotions and individual passions. The arts preserve our culture, inspire, educate, and entertain, while helping to build a deeper understanding of one another and the world around us. Fiscal year 2020-2021 and the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges. In the pages that follow, you will read of the exhibitions, acquisitions, events, and classes that this organization accomplished under those extraordinary circumstances. Behind them are all the people who brought those achievements to fruition—staff across every facet of the organization who made personal sacrifices, supported one another through loss, fear, and complex situations, and worked tirelessly to present Munson-Williams in innovative new ways. I am indebted to and inspired by their dedication.

Through months of shifting sands and 17 weeks of being closed to the public, Munson-Williams colleagues met the challenges with creativity, empathy, and persistence. Our education team engaged public school children remotely to ensure that art remained part of their curriculum. The PrattMWP faculty pivoted to offer new forms of classes to our fine arts and design students around the globe. Munson-Williams staff teams kept us moving forward financially and technologically while preparing to reopen safely to the public. At the same time, we found new ways to partner with our community through food drives for local pantries and free summer take-home lunch and art programs with Hope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and the Utica School District.

We are excited by the significant progress we continue to make in achieving our strategic plan, MWP 2025, and the foundation that was laid to improve our campus through the initiation of a dynamic Campus Master Plan and branding campaign.

I am deeply inspired by the sense of community throughout the Munson-Wiliams staff and by the kindness and generosity of our members making it all possible.

This report helps us look back on a year of endurance and strength. More importantly, what we learned in those difficult times helped us pave the way to an even more exciting future. We know that you will play a major role in it, and we thank you for your continuing support.

MUSEUM of ART

Following the widespread shutdown due to COVID-19 the previous spring, the Museum of Art reopened its doors and welcomed visitors July 9.

February brought the exciting new exhibition, Terrible Beauty: Richard Friedberg Sculpture, presenting monumental works by a regional artist and featuring a virtual opening celebration. The popular Art in Bloom 2021 showcased the creative talent of local floral designers.

Munson-Williams diligently pursued MWP 2025, the strategic five-year plan launched in 2019. The exhibitions Emma Amos: Color Odyssey and Call & Response: Collecting African American Art, celebrated works by African American artists. The exhibitions opened with a festive Juneteenth celebration featuring local performers, The Ladies of Soul and Their Gentlemen.

PERFORMING ARTS

In accordance with New York State regulations, all live programming scheduled for the 2020-2021 season was canceled or rescheduled. The Film Series resumed in March of 2021 with an abbreviated schedule and limited patrons per screening.

Three virtual performance events engaged audiences and generated contributions. Jeffrey Siegel traveled to Utica October 23 to perform live in the Auditorium for a virtual audience of Fountain Elms Society members. A second full-length Keyboard Conversation was recorded the next day and presented on April 28 as a free virtual event for all members. A virtual holiday program, A Celtic Family Christmas featuring the Leahy family was made available through the Munson-Williams website from December 12 through 31.

SCHOOL of ART

PrattMWP welcomed 107 new and 96 returning students in the fall of 2020.

To serve the creative needs of our community during the summer, the School of Art offered four virtual classes, three site-specific/outside classes off campus, and four on-campus classes in the studios (ceramics, jewelry, and sewing). All in-person classes were limited to adults and were capped at 50% capacity. More classes were offered throughout fall and spring.

For the 2020 – 21 fiscal year, the school of art served 391 community students and ran 62 classes for adults only.

The Artist-in-Residence program was suspended for 2020/2021.
