ANDY WARHOL KIDS WORKSHOPS: PRINTMAKING PANDEMONIUM ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDY WARHOL’ Ages 8 to 12 (1 Day Workshop) Tuition: $25 Students will be viewing the Museum of Art exhibition, The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again, as well as some other famous works of art by Andy Warhol. Students will create their own portrait prints in the style of Warhol. Birthday cupcakes will be provided for the student’s decorating and eating pleasure! Materials included with tuition.

ANDY WARHOL SELF PORTRAIT QUILT

Ages 9 to 12 (3 Day Workshop) Tuition: $75 Students will experiment with combining photography and quilting to create a two-color self portrait wall hanging. Students will choose colorful fabrics combined with photo technology to then cut, fuse and sew, creating a Warhol-themed quilt. Materials included with tuition.

WARHOL: INK, CHARCOAL, COLLAGE

All levels (2 Day Workshop) Must be 18 years or older Tuition: $150 This two-day workshop will explore mixed media drawing and collage with various materials. The first day will start with a visit to The Museum of Art exhibition, The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again to find inspiration and ideas for the project.

On the second day students will work from still life, exploring the possibilities of working from life vs. the imagination. The workshop will culminate with a review of the work produced. Materials included with tuition.

WARHOL-INSPIRED PRINTS

All levels Must be 18 years or older Tuition: $75 In this weekend day workshop, students will create their own Andy Warhol-inspired prints. Students will have fun mixing and layering color, shape, and pattern, as they print compositions styled after the works of Andy Warhol. Basic monoprinting and photocopy lithography techniques will be taught. Materials included with tuition.

PHOTOGRAPHING ARTWORK FOR A PORTFOLIO

All Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab Fee: $50 In this course artists will create quality visual records of their artwork. Students will gain knowledge of specific photographic and Photoshop techniques used in portfolio development.

CERAMIC WORKSHOP SALT AND SURFACE, A Play in Color and Texture

Intermediate to Advanced Levels Must be 18 years or older Tuition- $375 / Material fees included in tuition.

(Registration deadline- May 31) This workshop is for intermediate to advanced students who are experienced in working on or off the wheel. The emphasis will be on developing surfaces for thrown or hand-built forms that work with the effects of sodium vapor produced by salting the kiln at high temperature. Instruction will be given on creating washes and color engobes suited for salt. Surface treatments such as sgrafitto, appliquĂŠ, impression, and others will be discussed. Demonstrations, slides and lectures will be included.

The workshop dates are grouped for making work and prepping the kiln; and then loading and firing the kiln.

The kiln will be opened Sunday evening, June 16. All work will be bisque fired. However, some work may not get into the salt firing due to space limitations.

Professor Bryan McGrath has more than 40 years of teaching experience, making stoneware and porcelain work for salt and wood firing. He has conducted numerous workshops in the US and Ireland and has exhibited internationally.

BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Beginning Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab Fee: $50 This course is designed to help those wishing to advance their interest in the art of photography through the use of their digital camera and the digital darkroom. Topics will include: learning to use the camera controls, improving shooting skills, optimizing the image using Photoshop, and making quality enlargements using inkjet printers. Some computer experience is helpful. A digital camera is required for this course.

FIGURE DRAWING

All Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Model Fee: $40 The study of the human form is essential for every art student. This course emphasizes the interrelationship within the figure. Gestural drawing, contour drawing and other methods of recording the figure are the foundation of this course. A nude model will be used.

PAINTING

All Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185 This is a hands-on class that explores painting through practical applications and experiences that relate line, form, texture, and color, while also investigating how these visual relationships relate to the artist’s intentions and the meaning of the work. The projects will have some flexibility in order to accommodate beginners and experienced painters. Students who want this class to have an independent study structure will be accommodated. The instructor will help each student with individual problem solving along with brief lectures and critiques for the class as a group.

SCULPTURE, INTRODUCTION TO THE WELDED FORM

All Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 Through this course students will have the chance to learn basic skills in metalworking and electric arc welding to produce a welded form. In addition, other aspects of creative metalworking will be discussed, such as forming, cold connections and finishing.

Concepts on scale, kinetics and design will also be discussed to help in understanding limits of material.

The student will come away from the class with a creation of his or her own design as fabricated by their own hands.

SCULPTURE, WOOD & MIXED MEDIA All Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 Students will be introduced to basic woodworking techniques to create sculptural structures that can be combined with mixed media elements including found objects and recycled materials to create sculptural objects. All skill levels are welcome.

Painting demonstrations and individualized instruction are featured. Indoor studio lessons will be offered on rainy days. Students must provide their own transportation for class field trips.

FREE MOTION QUILTING AND QUILT AS YOU GO BASICS FOR BEGINNERS

Beginning Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $95/Lab fee: $30 Learn the basic concept of free-motion quilting and end the four-week workshop with constructing your free motion blocks assembled with a quilt-as-you-go technique.

Sewing machine required with drop feed dogs feature and a darning foot. All other supplies will be included with this workshop.

INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING Beginning Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 This course provides an introduction to a variety of printmaking techniques, including relief, collagraph, book binding, and monotype. Students will learn the concept of printing “multiple identical originals.”

INTRODUCTION TO POTTERY, THROWING FOR BEGINNERS

Beginning Levels Must be 18 years and older Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 This course covers beginning levels of throwing fundamentals. In a creative, positive community atmosphere students will develop the skills, dexterity, and coordination required to use the potter’s wheel as one tool of the ceramic forming process. Students will be introduced to handbuilding and various ceramic techniques, processes and aesthetics in a contemporary, social and historical context. The fundamentals of the firing and glazing processes will also be explored.

YOUNG ARTISTS DRAWING AND PAINTING

(Ages 13 to 17) Tuition: $200 This class is designed specifically for teenagers who want to grow creatively and explore the visual arts.

Students spend four weeks with their classmates developing artistic abilities through creative instruction.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT: FOR GRADES 10, 11, 12

Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 This is a serious portfolio development course that will focus on building and improving drawing skills, an important criterion for art college admission. Students will work from the still life and figure (no nude models), as well as self-portrait.

BEGINNING JEWELRY FOR TEENS

Ages 14-17 Tuition: $185/Lab fee: $40 This class for teens will introduce students to the basics of jewelry making. Demonstrations and lectures will include sawing/piercing, soldering, surface development, chain making and bezel setting cabochon stones. Students will have time during class to create jewelry of their own design using these techniques and working in non-ferrous metals including copper, brass and silver. Metal for projects may be purchased at the School of Art reception desk.

Students will be required to use a wide variety of hand tools and equipment including regular use of torches for annealing and soldering. Appropriate clothing and close-toed shoes must be worn during class.

ILLUSTRATION FOR TEENS: Investigating the Methods and Media

Ages 13 to 17 (must be 13 by first class) Tuition: $200/Lab fee: $40 Illustration for Teens is an introductory course to the practice of creating images for the purpose of communication. The objective of this course is to develop drawing skills through in-class instructions and practice. Students will be introduced to different mediums and methods such as, children’s book illustration, spot illustration, sequential art illustration and story boarding. Students will learn the formal elements of drawing: line, shape, value, texture, and linear perspective while working with a variety of media, including, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and inks.

Kids Summer Art Program

The Community Arts Education Kids program is designed for students to discover their potential as learners through art. Students will work with qualified artist educators to explore materials and processes creating and having fun as they challenge their imaginations. Students will experiment with clay, recycled materials and fibers and learn about texture, line and color as they build their own creations and create their own paintings and drawings. Students will develop confidence and skills as they make friends and become inspired by art. Classes are held in the School of Art studios and are taught by dedicated, enthusiastic instructors who respond to a child’s creative spirit.

Children will have the opportunity to proudly display their artwork at an exhibition and reception held in the School of Art Gallery at the conclusion of the program 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, August 1.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, children can take their artwork home with them.

Please Note: All ArtBox I & II students will meet in the School of Art Gallery for the first meeting 9 a.m. July 8.

MINI-MONET: The first section that meets from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. will meet in the S/A Gallery and the second session that meets from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. will meet in the classroom, SC1 located in the Student Center (located on the corner of State & Kirkland Streets) *Materials are supplied for children’s classes.

Please provide a snack for your child each day. It is recommended that each child bring to class an old shirt to use as a smock.*

MINI MONET

(Ages 4 and 5) Tuition: $100 Students will learn the basics in art including cutting, pasting, shapes and colors, in a safe comfortable environment. Activities will include collage, sculpture, painting and drawing. This class will also help children with social interaction through group activities. Due to the same lesson plan each session, children may only enroll in one session each semester.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Classes for boys, girls, men and women are offered in six-week sessions in ballet, jazz and tap.

To accommodate family vacation schedules, classes missed may be made up in another class during the summer.

The instructors recommend that all dance students in Level 2 and above attend at least two classes weekly. Although classes are listed individually, students should take all classes offered in their level to make the maximum progress during the summer. Summer is also a great time to try something different — be daring.

Returning students should also register for the same level they attended in the spring unless the instructor invites the student to advance.

New students are invited to discuss placement with the program coordinator. Please be advised that some changes may be made during the first week of classes. Please call Nancy Long at 315-797-0000 ext. 2208 Instructors include Nancy Long, Lynn Bollana, Kathy Ryan and Danielle Pontero.

NOTE: No multiple class discounts are offered in the summer. Students must have teacher approval to study at the Intermediate/Advanced levels. Please read the refund policy on the registration form.

Dance classes can be enjoyable and strenuous. If you have a question regarding your health, please consult your physician before registering for a dance class.

YOUR BEST VALUE IN ARTS & DANCE EDUCATION… SCHOLARSHIPS Community Arts & Scholarships are available and are awarded by need and merit. CANCELLATION It is very rare that classes are canceled but in that rare case of classes being cancelled, it will be announced on the following: • MWPAI website- home page • Automated phone message system School of Art reception desk • Television Stations: WKTV, WUTR, • Radio Stations: WIBX, WFRG, WLZW, WODZ, WOUR, KISS FM, Mix 102.5 WRCK/WKLL * We do not offer make up classes for children’s classes and teen classes, it is not an option with classroom usage and space designation between the college program and other CAE classes.

REFUND POLICY: • A full refund of tuition and lab fee will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when a class is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting.

• After the start of Community Arts Education classes and workshops pro-rated tuition and lab fee will be refunded based off of the last day of attendance and/ or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar.

• If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted, unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.

• Registration fees are not refundable.

• This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies.

Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address. In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account. *Official Withdrawal Forms can be found on-line www. mwpai.org or at the School of Art reception desk.
