2.1ProductDescription
The SABfamilyof wallprofiles comprisea wide range of trapezoidal, sinusoidal, sidingsor design external weathering profiles, manufactured fromColorcoat® pre-finished steel. These cladding profilescan be installed either verticallyor horizontally, with or without a structuralliner tray

The SAB35/1035profileisa trapezoidal profileand is illustrated in Figure 1. It often formspart of a built-up insulated wallcladding system where it iscombined with a galvanisedor pre-finished steel liner and mineral wool insulation, but can also be used for roofing applications.
The processof steelcoilmanufacture at TataSteelbeginswith sinter being produced from iron ore and limestone, and together with coke from coal, reduced in a blast furnaceto produce iron. Steel scrap isthen added to the liquid iron and oxygen isblown through the mixtureto convert it into liquid steelin the basic oxygen furnace. The liquid steelis continuouslycast into discrete slabs, which are subsequentlyreheated and rolled in a hot strip mill to produce steelcoil.
The hot rolledcoils are then pickled and cold rolled, before being galvanised and coated. In the Netherlands, these processesare all carried out on the integrated IJmuiden site. In the UK, the hot rolled coilsare transported byrail, from Port Talbot to Llanwern for pickling and cold rolling, and the cold rolled coilsare transported by railto Shotton where the strip isgalvanised and coated.

Pre-finished steelcomprisesa number ofpaint layersandtreatments which are applied to the steelin an automated and carefullycontrolled processwith each layer ofthe product having a particular function. It isthe combined effect of allthese layersthat give the product its overallperformanceand ensuresa material that isrobust and offers the specifier a choice of colour and effect. During the organic coating process, a zinc based metallic coating is first applied to the steelcoil. A pre-treatment isapplied and then a primer before adding the final top coat layer(s)in the form of liquid paint. For the vastmajority of prefinished steelproducts, the above topcoatsare applied on the top surface only, while the reverseor back side ofthe strip isproduced with a high performing backing coat. These are cured at elevated temperaturesbefore being recoiled prior to use in the manufactureof the profiles.
The pre-finished steelisprofiled and cut into suitable lengths on a continuous production line and anoverviewof the processfrom raw materialsto transport of the profilesto the construction site, isshown in Figure 2.
Processdata for the manufactureof hot and cold rolled coilat IJmuiden, Port Talbot and Llanwern wasgathered as part of the latest worldsteeldata collection. For IJmuiden, Port Talbot and Llanwern, and Colorcoat® manufacture at Shotton, the data collection wasnot onlyorganised by site, but also by each processline within the site. In thiswayit was possibleto attribute resource use and emissions to each process line, and using processed tonnage data for that line, also attribute resourcesand emissionsto specificproducts. For the manufacture of the cladding profile, processdata wasalso collected from the manufacturing line on the SABsite at IJsselstein.
2.3Technical data andspecifications
The generalpropertiesof the reference product are shown in Table2 and the property rangesof the product familyare in Table3. The technical specificationsof the product are presented in Table4.
2.4Packaging
The profilesare packaged using wood, plasticbanding and film, to protect them during delivery to site and prior to installation. The massof thispackaging is 0.023kg of timber, 0.0025kg of plastic banding, and 0.00015kg of polyethylene film, per m2 of profile.
2.5Referenceservice life
Steel profileshave a design life dependant on a number of factors including the building use, location, weather conditions and the specification of the pre-finished steelproduct.
Products specified with Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® are designed to withstand even themost demandingand aggressive environmentsand are used in a wide range of industrial and commercial buildings, providing super durability and corrosion resistance.
Threelayer Colorcoat Prisma® notonlyuniquelypushesthe boundariesfor UV performance but alsooutperformsthe highest European corrosion resistance standards [19] and makesit ideal for commercial, retail, warehouse, publicsector and superior aesthetic buildings which are built to last.
Tata Steeloffer a Confidex® Guaranteedirectlyto the industrial/ commercial building owner for the weather side of both of these pre-finished steelproducts. Confidex® offersthe longest and most comprehensive guarantee for pre-finished steelavailable in Europe. Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma® are guaranteed for up to 40years. The exact length of the guaranteeisproject specific and depends upon the building location, use and colour. Appropriateinspection and maintenance can significantlyextend the functionallife of the profile beyond thisperiod. Further detailsof theConfidex® Guaranteeare availableatwww.colorcoat-online.com
