ith anything in life, change must come. The wedding industry is no different. Since we entered this industry in 2010, it’s been an ever changing landscape overf lowing with immense opportunity and voids to be filled. We found a void and filled it in the best way we knew how, leading to a disruption that was much needed.

Up close, we weren’t sure what we were doing, and what the outcome would be. But after digging deep, we saw a major shift in the way weddings were viewed by the mainstream media. We started seeing black couples (that had nothing to do with the NFL, NBA or Entertainment Industry) being featured in print publications. We started to see the shift with luxury bridal gown designers hiring models of color for their major advertising campaigns. We even began seeing women of color on covers of other bridal magazines. Watching the shift unfold over the past eight years has been very fulfilling. Being at the forefront of this change has been even more rewarding.

More changes are coming. This Summer issue marks our first year since changing our magazine release format. In the past, MunaLuchi was found on newsstands at major retailers across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and other international locations. I will never forget the feeling of walking into my local Barnes and Noble and seeing MunaLuchi on the newsstand. I smiled from ear to ear admiring the magazine amongst a sea of “status quo” titles. That was January of 2010. We made the extremely difficult decision last year around this time to move into a digital and mobile first approach which resulted in us releasing our magazine for free digitally and in print for purchase on our website. The new model was very well received, with our last 4 digital issues receiving our 3.6 million impressions and each print edition selling out.

This year alone, some of the most popular wedding blogs have shut down and a major nationally distributed wedding magazine has discontinued their print editions. It’s a result of the shift we have been seeing, and solidifies our leap into our new format. Change is inevitable, nevertheless, we continue to disrupt the industry and evolve in ways that have enabled us to deliver you all the content you love and admire. You can always count on us to always stay ahead of the curve. The Summer 2018 Edition marks a full year since our switch to a digital and mobile first approach, and we couldn’t be more pleased by the response from you. You’ve liked, shared, purchased our magazines from all corners of the world. And we just want to say Thank You! In this issue, we share the most gorgeous weddings, events and heartfelt love stories. Our cover couple, Sydel and Damion, share exclusive details about their relationship and a glimpse into what their wedding will be like this September. We also share our favorite MunaSerenades (MunaSerenade is a couples date night experience put together by members of The Coterie.) This year, we received over 1000 applications for 16 MunaSerenade experiences and we are anticipating even more participation for 2019. We also took a trip down memory lane with a lovely recap of our 4th annual Coterie Retreat that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa last December. Our 5 year anniversary of the Coterie Retreat will take place this December in Bermuda, and it’s going to be our most epic one to date. If you are looking for a relaxing honeymoon location, or considering getting married in Bermuda, we have something special for you. Email my team at info@munaluchibridal.com for more details on this experience. In the meantime, enjoy our Summer 2018 Issue and, as always, tell me what you love most.

INTERVIEW

Planner Spotlight

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY.

I have been an event planner, designer and coordinator for almost ten years. It was never my intention to be an event planner- I call it a happy accident! I helped a friend with her wedding and received an overwhelmingly positive response which inspired me to enter this line of service. This path hasn’t always been an easy one though, as you encounter people during some of the most emotional stages of their lives. But I like to challenge myself… to explore uncharted territories. They say that nothing good happens in your comfort zone and this is something I have taken to heart. So I made it my mission to give each client 150% of myself in exchange for trusting me with their momentous occasions. That’s really what has taken me this far.

WITH CHIOMA NWOGU-JOHNSON of DURE EVENTS

Nigerian weddings are some of the most sought after weddings, and Houston based Event Planner Chioma of Dure Events is the go-to planner for this luxury niche market. We had a chance to chat with her about her business, 2019 wedding trends and wedding planning tips.

someone whose sole focus is to make sure it all f its together perfectly. It frees you up to focus on what really matters…creating memories and f iguring out this new phase of your life with your signif icant other. A good wedding planner is also a f inancial godsend. They know how to make sure you spend money on the right things and they have connections to leverage! Many people don’t want the added cost of a wedding planner but having one saves you more money than you would spend paying said wedding planner.

Lets get personal ! WHAT’S IN YOUR PURSE RIGHT NOW?

My phones, my key and my sunglasses. FAVORITE MUSIC ARTIST OR SONG?

I LOVE Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. Oh and Diana Ross IPHONE OR SAMSUNG?

I do not own an iPhone. I am a Samsung girl for life. GUILTY PLEASURE?

Oud perfumes. I just love the intricacies of the scents. I also love chocolate covered almonds and of course - as a queen - I love the spa. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL TO ANY DESTINATION RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD IT BE?

The Maldives or Bora Bora. IF YOU COULD PLAN ANY UPCOMING CELEBRITY WEDDING, WHICH WOULD YOU WANT TO DO AND WHY? photo: rh photoarts

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING COMING UP FOR 2019 WEDDINGS?

Avant-garde is a big trend I’m seeing for 2019, which I absolutely love. Couples are embracing abstract details more but keeping color palettes clean- lots of white, ivory, gold. The color taupe is also making an appearance. I think it’s great at giving a palette depth without losing that clean, modern feel. I’ve also seen people embracing that French-garden f lair and that has been very refreshing and very romantic.

I would love to plan Yvonne Orji’s wedding whenever it happens. I just think it would be such a great experience and so much fun. She has a wonderful energy and I think it would be interesting creating an experience that mirrors that energy. Also Idris Elba’s wedding would be fun to do. SOMETHING THAT RECENTLY INSPIRED YOU?

The love that my dad has for my mom. Just watching it grow and continue to evolve even after so many years…it’s humbling. It’s pushing me to be better, not just to myself but to everyone around me; to be kinder and more deliberate about showing love. I f ind myself wanting to do more; not just for them, but for other people as well.

YOU’VE BEEN DOING LOTS OF DESTINATION WEDDINGS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION OUTSIDE OF THE US TO PLAN A WEDDING?

I love love love Dubai. I’ve planned three weddings there so far and I love how much inventory I get to play with. And the convenience! From the moment you land, everything is convenient, the service is great, the venues are beautiful and there is so much variety. Destination weddings can be very stressful just dealing with new vendors and f inding people whose work ethic and commitment to excellence match yours. But I feel like in Dubai, I’m spoilt for choice and that makes my job a lot easier. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP REASONS A BRIDE SHOULD HIRE A WEDDING OR EVENT PLANNER?

Honestly? Because planning a wedding is stressful! There are a lot of moving pieces and you benef it massively from having

wasn't attracted to Damion, but simply because she didn’t really notice him at a March Madness basketball game where her brother Seth was playing. Plus, she was in a relationship at the time. Damion caught f irst glance at Sydel while he was walking up the stairs. She was sitting in the stands, and they made eye contact brief ly. “I couldn’t forget that face,” Damion recalls the moment he saw Sydel for the f irst time. It was a normal night at a nice restaurant and he stood up to make a toast (which wasn't out of the ordinary) and before I knew it he was in the middle of the poem and then down on one knee asking me to marry him. I didn't know what was happening until halfway through the poem. It was everything I wanted and more in a proposal from the love of my life."

Kaitlyn and Brandyn’s French victorian garden themed wedding was inspired by a trip to Paris the previous summer, and took place at the beautiful Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina. The color palette included topiary tree greens, blush and lavender, and the ceremony incorporated the Lord’s prayer, as well as a unity sand pour ceremony. Kaitlyn was stunning in a Stephen Yearick gown, accessorized with a cartier diamond bracelet, and Jimmy Choo shoes. BEST MEMORIES: "When Brandyn ripped his pants during the garter removal! The funny part is he bought an extra pair of pants because he had a feeling he would rip them at some point during the reception." - Kaitlyn ADVICE FOR ENGAGED COUPLES: "Enjoy this stage of your relationship because it is a unique time that you won't get back. Don’t try to get wrapped up in planning the wedding so much that you forget the reason why you two are together in the f irst place, it's about the MARRIAGE, not the WEDDING."

HOW THEY MET "Adeola and I both went to Alabama A&M University, but ironically enough we didn't start dating until we both had graduated. We had several mutual friends and would see each other in passing from time to time. I secretly crushed on him for some time and f inally my best friend, Chris, had visited Birmingham, AL to DJ during a big football weekend and just so happened to mention me to Adeola. Obviously he gave him my number and to my surprise he randomly texted me and I melted. The best day ever!"

THE PROPOSAL: " Kourtney was visiting me in Houston and I remember talking to her and I was nervous because I had no idea of how I wanted to

propose, and I remember her mentioning how we love watching movies and of course I agreed. Then it hit me: I’m proposing in a movie theater. I would secretly drive from Houston, TX to Birmingham, AL to pull this whole thing off. I would have her go watch a random movie with her friends and BOOM I pop up on the screen and have a conversation with her and of course end with “Will you Marry Me?” Now of course it wasn’t that easy. Kourtney can be pretty diff icult to surprise so I had to be smart about this. She had some things to take care of for school that day so when her friends showed up to her house she still had on scrubs and was doing homework. Apparently she had no intention on leaving to “watch a movie” anytime soon. Two hours had passed and her friends sent me a text to let me know that she was giving them trouble about dressing up to simply go watch a movie so of course I was getting nervous because all of our family and friends were waiting. FINALLY, they were able to get her out of the house and to the theater in a cute outf it (not her scrubs thank God!). As we all watched her and her friends enter the theater from our cars, we made sure the coast was clear so that we could all get in place. I bought out the entire theater so that no one else would be in that room with them. I had my friend hiding in the theater so that he could record her reaction. It seemed like hours had passed while waiting on her to f inally leave the theater to meet me in the lobby in front of our family and friends. When I got the que that she had walked out of the theater, I had Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” playing, and f inally, there she was... Her reaction was priceless and the tears of joy were surely f lowing. As I got down on one knee and asked her to spend forever with me all I could do was smile and pray that she would say yes, and she did! Mission accomplished! "

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION: " Our engagement session was so fun.

We knew we wanted to do a Nigerian theme for some photos and a sleek, formal theme for the other photos. When Adeola f irst presented the idea to me, I thought it was a little over the top, but the pictures turned out amazing! I’m so happy I trusted his vision. Y NOT Images not only took great photos, but they helped the theme and vision come to life."

OUR FIRST DATE:

"Adeola asked me where I wanted to eat and I chose Applebee’s for happy hour. We sat there and talked for hours! The rest is history." FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE:

"We love going to the movies, traveling, eating sushi, and binge watching our favorite shows." WEDDING PLANNING PROGRESS:

"CRAZY, but we know it will all come together so we are just taking things day by day. We both come from huge families so we are just trying to keep everything as organized as possible. We have such a huge support system and so many people that are in our corner during this time so we are very thankful for that." WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST: Kourtney: “I am looking forward to the very moment that I get to see his face for the f irst time. The thought of it makes me blush.” Adeola: “I can’t wait to see my bride

and know after this day she will be off icially mine for the rest of my life.

HOW THEY MET "Jarod and I met through a community service organization ten years ago. I saw him and thought he was a very attractive guy - I

have a thing for beautiful eyes and ears. So I attempted to befriend him before making my move. After us becoming friends and hanging out, he actually started to date a friend of mine at the time (very short period of time, like a few months). Long story short, with the blessing of that friend, who sadly has now passed away, I decided to ask Jarod out. After a few dates, I shared with a friend of mine that I'm going to marry that guy! Unfortunately there was a brief split where I moved to California to pursue a few business goals and Jarod and I decided it was best for us to keep individual focus on personal growth and goals. So I moved to LA with our dog (Rudy), him keeping our other dog (Cupcake) in Houston. After being apart for 1 ½ years God brought us back together and I couldn't wait any longer to make it off icial because I didn’t want to take this second chance for granted... "

THE PROPOSAL: " So I had to pick the perfect date, I pondered and I pondered about the date...nothing came to me. On a trip to Dallas with

a designer friend of mine I saw these cool cattle tags and the only numbers they had left were 11 and 17. When I picked up the number it was the sequence 11/17 and I said this was the date, Jarod's birthday is the following month 12/17 so it all made sense to me. So I called my parents, family and friends, swore them to secrecy NOT to spill the beans. About 3 weeks before I started to let Jarod know I was possibly up for a Wedding Planning Show and they wanted to tape a wedding I had coming up the next day on 11/18, and that the camera wanted to follow me and get to know a little bit about me and my personal life as a Wedding Planner. Of course I wanted to capture the moment. I had a my phenomenal friends, Joshua Dwain Photography to captures photos, and Yamean Studios to capture the video. I had a friend pose as the Producer giving him a run down of the night and the camera crew was recording. I had my assistant call while we were in route to "dinner " to let me know there was an issue at the venue and I needed to come ASAP. All of our family and friends were tucked away awaiting our arrival to the venue. When he walked in it was completely dark, because we were told the power was out and they had to power down to complete the setup. Walking

in holding hands with the cameras following us, I got him to his spot and immediately the video mapping presentation started playing a slideshow with Toni Braxton's "How many Ways." It was a prefect setting! So we will marry 11/17/2018 which will mark 1 year from the day I proposed." FAVORITE THING(S) TO DO AS A COUPLE? "Eat dinner on our TV trays

and watch Wendy Williams and the Housewives of Beverly Hills with our dogs." DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION :

"A friend of ours is an interior designer who invited us to a holiday event and one of the venues was this BEAUTIFUL Antique shop. Immediately after the proposal I had been on the search for the perfect space in Houston and I just couldn't f ind the location I envisioned in my head. I begged the owner of the store for a month, borderline harassed her, and wined & dined her to butter her up! She never allowed anyone to do it, but I begged for just ten minutes of

time in the store, and she so graciously gave us an entire hour! Our love for the MET Gala was the inspiration." THAT MOMENT YOU KNEW HE WAS "THE ONE":

"Jarod and I were friends and he would drive down from college on the weekend and crash at my place. I didn’t have a bath rug in my bathroom so every now and again I would slip almost hurting myself on the regular. Jarod heard me a few times slipping and praying to GOD I made it. Time passed and one day I stepped out of the shower and there was a rug and I didn’t slip. It was in that moment I knew he was the one!" HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? "AMAZING! I'm

now on the other side. I'm usually the planner and now I'm the groom. I feel the emotional roller coaster brides and grooms have to endure. Because we, for sure, will have a wedding planner." - Darryl WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY? "We're both looking

forward to having our family and friends celebrate with us. And reading my vows to him."

HOW THEY MET: "We all grow up with a certain image of how true love will one day take control of our lives but if you're like us, the method chosen by love remained unknown until that special moment. For us, that moment came via a very unique mode of dating at the time which was an online social network. We both found that our background, heritage, culture, values, goals, and aspirations were almost perfectly aligned." THE PROPOSAL: "We had a European trip planned with our mothers and it included stops in Paris and Rome. We had a scheduled lunch at the Eiffel tower and after lunch, Antonio suggested that the family take pictures with the Eiffel tower in the background. After walking the distance of two football f ields and passing multiple opportunities for a photo with a perfect Eiffel tower backdrop, he found the perfect spot and got down on one knee. Immediately, what I thought was a random photographer, hopped out of the bushes and began taking pictures. It was a complete surprise and I immediately started crying tears of happiness. It was only appropriate that the proposal took place in front of the Eiffel tower in the City of love. This made it a poignant moment in all of our lives. Simply unforgettable." WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE? "Our f irst date was at Buffalo Wild Wings (I’m sure you’re not thinking that this is the perfect first date spot). At the time, it was equidistant from our homes and it was the grand opening of the establishment. The restaurant was just the location where we realized that this date could develop into more than just wings, fries, and beers. The evening f lowed beautifully. job out of college to thank for bringing us together. After many years of working together and becoming friends, Bryant conf ided in me that he was in the process of interviewing for a job in NYC. Determined to not let it stop our chemistry, Bryant made the f irst move, asking me out for rooftop cocktails and dinner. The next few months were spent with lots of laughter, DC-centric dates and barely leaving each other’s side. At the end of that summer, Bryant moved to NYC while I stayed in DC. For more than three years, our relationship grew over long distance alternating weekends up and down the Northeast corridor and quickly becoming Amtrak experts." THE PROPOSAL : "After three years

of dating, Bryant planned an elaborate proposal on June 10, 2017 in Washington, DC. He told me that he would be in DC that weekend for a design conference which was actually happening - but in Miami, FL. Our families were in on the surprise and Bryant secretly coordinated for his parents and brother to f ly to DC to meet my parents and celebrate our families becoming one. After months of coordination, he lured me to a preplanned spot on the C&O Canal with the promise of viewing an art exhibition that was part of the “conference.” Instead, he got down on one knee and popped the question. Bryant’s brother played the role of paparazzi hiding near the proposal site to snap pictures and video as it happened. The rest of the weekend was spent with lots of family bonding and postengagement celebration - and Bryant’s relief that the months of sneaking around had come to a successful end!" DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION: " I really wanted the

HOW THEY MET: " We met at a country club. So if anyone

says we met in “the club,” technically, they are right and wrong. More specif ically, we met on the dance f loor. He was staring at me from across the room with the biggest smile on his face. He looked so happy. He then boldly approached me...and the rest is history!"

THE PROPOSAL: " Our proposal was intimate and very ref lective of the strongest tie that

weeks by phone, we went on our f irst date. He was a true gentleman. He picked me up with yellow roses in hand. From there we went roller skating (my favorite pastime) then ate dinner at my favorite sushi restaurant, and concluded the date by sitting in the car for an hour-or-so talking about everything from politics to music. The date lasted at least 8 hours. We both couldn't believe how much time passed!" FAVORITE THING(S) TO DO AS A COUPLE? " One of our favorite things to do as a couple

is to listen to instrumentals and freestyle. He brings the East Coast vibe and I bring the West Coast vibe. In addition to freestyling, we also love to be adventurous and try new things. California has so much to offer, so we love to explore new hiking paths, create good healthy meals, go dancing, and workout together."

DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. " Our engagement

session was a memorable adventure. Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are such breathtaking sites, and to be there for the f irst time, with each other, surrounded by the history of the Native Indians, is something we both valued and cherished. Not to mention our lovely husband and wife photographers who were just as fun and adventurous as us. They immediately lightened the mood by dancing and laughing with us, pushing us to get closer to cliffs to get the perfect shot and stopping the shoot to allow tourists to greet us and wish us well on our journey to marriage. The multicultural wedding industry has been on a steep upward climb, and we’re so proud to be at the forefront of showcasing outstanding talent from Africa. This editorial shoot was produced in Namibia by an amazing collective of vendors. Namibia is a hidden gem, and a great location for an intimate wedding or even a romantic honeymoon. The editorial gives us bold and dramatic tablescapes with carefully curated details - like the black goblets and tableware and the vibrant and suspended edison bulbs. Wooden tables and centerpieces juxtaposed lucite ghost chairs embellished with a single black oversized fabric rose. The models completed the look with simple yet chic gowns paired with asymmetrical oversized bouquets.

3. The Big Day

Alicia's Top 3 Wedding Planning Secrets

It’s f inally here, today is the day and all eyes and questions and mishaps and deadlines are on you... not the day you had in mind when celebrating your love. Release #allofthethings onto to your planner. Relax, have a glass of champagne and truly experience the day. Be the bride in her custom gown glowing with love.

It’s never too early to begin planning your wedding. But it can be too late to book your wedding planner. As the most important commitment you make in your life including an expert on weddings can simplify the process and take a load of stress from the wedding day!

1. A Planner is Your #1 Fan Every couple has their share of unwanted texts or calls from family STRONGLY suggesting their ideas for YOUR wedding. Most couples report having a planner kept them focused on the important details THEY wanted as a couple and became a unbiased buffer for making decisions during the planning process.

2. Getting Tasks Completed Time and time again I have seen couples rely on friends & family to complete tasks and yet they go unf inished on Wedding day. The excitement of your engagement gains a lot of volunteers, who mean well, but leaves the couple with loads of tasks to complete themselves. Planners have projected deadlines and staff to complete those daunting tasks while you continue life and career.

TOP TIPS for Snagging the PERFECT Wedding Officiant by roxanne birchfield, owner of married by rev roxy

DO.

MAKE TIME.

Making time to choose the right off iciant is different than searching for the perfect dress, shoes or a photographer. Finding the right off iciant can feel similarly to online dating. Yes, you want to make sure they have quality photos and or videos displaying their work, but you also want to make sure that the off iciant GETS YOU both as a couple! You will want someone standing at your alter who took the time to get to know you both and who will f it in with the vibe and ambiance of your special day.

DON’T.

FALL TOO FAST WITHOUT ASKING ABOUT THEIR CREDENTIALS.

For centuries clergy of various faiths have married people. Some clergy are ordained to special ministries outside of a church, temple, mosque or synagogue, to address the needs of the general public. Some of these places include the hospitals, the work place or military. An ordination is a legal document and it should come from a responsible endorsing body. Secondly, some states or cities may require that the off iciant not only be ordained but also require that they be registered with the county clerks off ice. New York City is one of those cities. If the minister or off iciant signing your marriage license is not registered, your marriage may not be legal. Also, if you are looking for an off iciant who also does counseling ask, not only about their credentials but also about their experience. My counseling background is in Clinical Pastoral Care. I have provided spiritual and emotional support to hundreds of patients, U.S. Army Soldiers and their families. I not only provide this care but I teach what I do to nursing students as a college adjunct professor. MAKE YOUR POTENTIAL OFFICIANT SHOW YOU THE RECEIPTS!

DO.

THINK BEYOND THE WEDDING DAY.

Marriage is a joining together of two people spiritually and legally. I can’t speak for everyone’s brand, but my brand is about building community. Once you are “MARRIED by REV ROXY” you are apart of a family. Through the years to come our company will put on various retreats and events to help keep the family bond strong. With being MARRIED by REV ROXY you will have special access to all these events and activities. MARRIED by REV ROXY is open to those who are Christian and non-religious. NADIA + MYRON C H A R L OT T E , N C OC TO B E R 6 , 2 0 1 7 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y N a d i a D P h o t o g ra p hy

Text by Samuel Naumick

T

ime stopped for Myron that summer day on the campus of North Carolina Central University when he f irst laid eyes on

Nadia walking down the stairs towards their accounting class. For a while their communication remained everyday-casual, until Myron f inally mustered the courage to strike up a conversation. He asked Nadia if he could have a ride to his car, during which he inquired about her “situation,” alluding to her current relationship status. Having just recently come out of a diff icult breakup, Nadia f latly stated that she was understandably “done dealing with guys.” Naturally discouraged, Myron still refused to give up, knowing that Nadia was a rare catch and that they were destined to be together. They continued to talk regularly after class, both very much enjoying their conversations - something Nadia couldn’t help but notice. One night fate would bring them together outside of their usual classroom setting, and it was there, at a party in Durham, that their love would truly begin to take shape. Sharing a dance, they both started to see each other in a more equal light; Myron’s feelings for Nadia growing into a steady smolder, and Nadia’s beginning to uncontrollably spark. When before, looking into each other’s eyes seemed a common exchange, now evolved into an intimate gaze of longing and desire. At the end of the evening numbers were exchanged as well as that f irst hug that never seems to last long enough. Though for Nadia and Myron it was the beginning of together forever... The evening of the proposal started out as a date like any other, at least on the surface. Knowing Nadia’s love for f lowers, Myron scheduled a tour of the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Nadia recalls how she, “soaked up this super special moment,” as they walked through the garden ref lecting on their experiences together. Myron took this opportunity to express his unending love and appreciation

for Nadia. After about his third aff irmation of love, Nadia’s heart skipped a beat as she began to understand what was about to take place… There within the beauty of the botanical garden, Myron dropped to one knee and asked Nadia to spend the rest of her life with him as husband and wife. Their wedding took place at international art & design space, the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. After trying on many gowns Nadia f inally settled on one of the f irst ones she tried on; a gorgeous Rivini gown in which she left her Groom completely speechless. BEST MEMORIES: “Hands down, the f irst look! Even though our f irst look took place in front of our entire wedding party on a busy street in Uptown Charlotte, the moment that Myron turned to look at me - nothing else mattered. It was just he and I in that moment; emotions high, being vulnerable with each other.” ADVICE FOR ENGAGED COUPLES: “Enjoy the process. It will be challenging, but f ind peace in knowing that soon enough you will be sharing an experience of a lifetime - your wedding day! The memories will be worth everything you put into your special day.”

The inspiration... "Georgette with Pea to Tree Events came up with the inspiration of Girl on Fire to empower women and to feel the passion that they have towards their significant other. The shoot day was amazing! All participants came with high energy as the song "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys resonated throughout the event venue. It is our hope that with the styled details throughout this shoot that it would ignite that fire, passion and add inspiration to those future brides as they plan their wedding day!"

W E D DING I D EAS Vibrant and colorful Jamaican-inspired shoot designed by The Destination Collective. Photographed by Merrick Cousley

WEDDING IDEAS

The inspiration... "I’m a Jamaican wedding planner, specializing in destination weddings in Jamaica while living in Canada for almost two decades. My colleague is wedding planner Jennifer Borgh, who is Canadian and moved to Jamaica two years ago to create and run a wedding venue. We are drawn to and love all things Jamaica! This shoot came out of our need to showcase the vibrant, colourful, rugged beauty of the island that some never really see. The landscape of the island is vastly different from one place to the next and we wanted to give brides a different perspective of the island. We also wanted to show the glamorous side of getting married in destination with all the elements of island life that you could imagine. Jamaica was the inspiration behind every element of this styled shoot. The location which shows off the rich landscape with the rugged coastline and sprays of water from waves crashing against the rocks and the amazing evening sunsets. Borghinvilla was the perfect spot to stage this shoot, boasting 2 acres of lush local f lowers, indigenous plants, and a stunning cliff view of the Caribbean Sea. Local vendors were used for every detail of the shoot. The décor incorporated a mix of Jamaican f lowers such as hydrangeas from the Blue Mountains, locally grown orchids, as well as palm and philodendrons. White roses were dispersed throughout the f lorals to add texture. Polished gold chairs, gold cutlery and glass tables with gold framed legs were the base for this island luxury set up. Stationery was customized for the event and the smallest details were attended to. A gemstone was even added to the menus that marked the shoot location. The rich golden hue of the tables and chairs offset the design palette of purple, green and white while twilight added touches of romance" -Ophellia McKnight of The Destination Collective

COTERIE RETREAT - JOHANNESBURG A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Text by Samuel Naumick

T

he Coterie Retreat, MunaLuchi’s annual three-day conference for wedding and event professionals servicing the multicultural market, held for 2017 in

beautiful Johannesburg, South Africa, took place December 4th - 7th, and was hosted in the luxurious Palazzo MonteCasino Hotel. A taste of Italy in the heart of South Africa, the awardwinning Palazzo MonteCasino Hotel is considered by many to be the most beautiful and romantic hotel in South Africa. The resplendent complex grounds features numerous restaurants, plenty of shopping options, theaters, a bird garden, and multiple conference and event spaces - a perfect retreat setting. A relaxing and intimate affair, the Coterie Retreat offers attendees three days of keynote presentations, hands-on workshops, breakout seminars and curated networking events - followed by three evenings of unforgettable elegant social experiences, including cocktail hours, f ine dining, and gala parties complete with winepairing menus and fashion exhibitions.

Day one

kicked off with opening statements and introductions from retreat speaker/moderator and entrepreneur, Karli Harvey Raymond, followed by an inspirational speech by Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba. Mayor Mashaba spoke of his journey in overcoming an oppressive government, how to continue to f ind hope, his pride and love for South Africa and its people, and his dreams for the future. Event Designer extraordinaire, Eddie Zaratsian, spoke to his experiences in the industry and how overcoming the adversity of his past has contributed to shaping his present. Eddie also provided an inspiring hands-on f loral demo during a day-three breakout session, as well as signing copies of his book, Custom Florals and Lifestyle. MunaLuchi Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Jacqueline Nwobu’s speaker session focused on seven top tips for Instagram success, and what’s hot in social media for 2018; retreat attendees were left with a wealth of information on modern business practices and how to get the most for your brand through social media.

EVENTS

Couture bridal & evening-wear Designer, Yemi Osunkoya, of Kosibah, provided fascinating insight into the bridal design aspect of the wedding industry, discussing his journey from early beginnings to becoming the renowned industry icon he is today. Wedding & Event Planner, Tiffany Chalk, of Tiffany Chalk Events, led a speaker session on “Planning for Success: Keys to Establish Successful Workf low Systems and Prepare for Growth,” providing retreat attendees with the tools to streamline and f ine-tune business practices, leading to more fruitful turn-around on business investments. Breakout sessions included Photographer & Author, Elizabeth Messina’s much anticipated photography session, and an inspiring styling workshop by renowned international Wedding Planner & Designer, Joy Proctor, providing retreat attendees with trade techniques backed by an expertise of over four-hundred weddings. The f irst night was complete with a “From South Africa with Love” welcome cocktail party at the equestrian estate of Tintswalo at Waterfall. Retreat attendees enjoyed cocktails and gourmet hors d’oeuvres during performances by the Zulu Dance Troupe, and a bridal runway fashion show featuring the couture gowns of Yemi Osunkoya, and South African Fashion Designer, Gert Johan Cotezee.

Day two

of the 2017 Coterie Retreat kicked-off with opening words from Retreat Moderator and Speaker, Karli Harvey Raymond, before introducing the f irst speaker of the day, Sisa Ntshona - CEO of South African Tourism. Sisa spoke on Africa as the next tourism frontier of the world, citing Africa’s seemingly unlimited resources, gorgeous landscapes, diverse ecosystems and wildlife, and many rich, unique cultures. Liene Stevens, author, speaker, behavioral psychologist and Founder/President of business development and consultation company, Think Splendid, spoke next with a lecture on connecting to the millennial generation for weddings and events. Renowned wedding Photographer, Chip Dizard, of Chip Dizard Weddings, spoke about the seven must have items on your website that will turn into a lead generating machine. Chip’s tips were invariably useful and clever steps that any type of business can take in order to get the most of every aspect of their website. Elite, men's high-fashion designer, Miguel Wilson, Atlanta, GA, spoke about his journey to becoming one of the most sought-after designers in the world. With the majority of focus within the wedding industry being on the bride, Miguel saw a major need, and opportunity, to shine the spotlight on the groom - after all, it’s his day too. Nadia Johnson of Studio 82 Events & Design lectured on “The Trial, The Testimony, The Tribe,” speaking to not just the hardships of the industry but of the trials and tribulations of her own life, and how her peers of the wedding industry not only form a network of business opportunity but also a community of support.

The main event of the evening, and one of

CO N T E N T S Elite wedding photographer, Nana Annan, presented her lecture titled “Legally Booked, Sound Legal Basics for Your Business.” Nana brings a very experienced law background to the wedding and events industry, and spoke to the absolute necessity of having - at the least - a basic understanding of the legalities of the business world - including professional verbiage, and the contract structure. A panel discussion followed next on “Getting Published,” featuring Jacqueline Nwobu, photographer Christine Meintjes, and Karli Harvey Raymond, who also led the Q & A. The discussion gave Retreat attendees an inside perspective on the magazine submission and review process; what a magazine may be looking for at any given time, and how submitters can increase the chances of having their event accepted and featured. MunaLuchi Co-Founder and company President, Chike Nwobu, presented his speaker session on “The Cycles of Business: Knowing When It’s Time to Harvest.” Chike gave a passionate and heartfelt lecture, speaking to the personal experiences of co-founding and running the MunaLuchi company, summed up in a multi-cycle business model depicting the ups & downs of investment, and knowing when to harvest the benef its.

from our partner, Kristy of Momental Designs was created with the South African national f lower in mind. The designer incorporated the protea f lower throughout the stationery and gifting experience. To start, attendees received a large box that contained a black pashmina, with the protea f lower hand painted by Kristy and her team. Alongside the pashmina was a custom paper protea and the general itinerary for the conference on the inside cover of the box. It was amazing to see guests arriving to the Coterie Retreat in their custom black pashminas. Upon arrival, guests were given a lanyard shaped like the protea f lower and a detailed itinerary including speakers, sponsors and helpful tips for the conference.

Rustic Chic

was the theme of the white party. For the White Party, we wanted to give the attendees the experience of the African Bush. The bare wooden table were decorated with large rocks and greenery from the surroundings, so Kristy designed the menus, table numbers and place card to match that aesthetic. She incorporated the protea f lower again, hand-painted onto the menus and escort cards. The torn edges of the stationery gave an all natural feel and tied in perfectly with the tablescapes.

For the f inal night of the conference, attendees were dressed in their black tie attire for an elaborate Gala. The room design featured tall and low ice sculptures with vibrant bright f lowers frozen within the ice blocks. Kristy designed the menus to mimic the ice and the f loral arrangements. The table numbers and placecard all carried the f loral inspiration throughout and were the perfect additionl to our f inal night in Johannesburg.

A TOUR OF AWARD WINNING HOTEL - THE SILO Text by Samuel Naumick

urrounded by breathtaking mountain views and beautiful sandy beaches, Cape Town, South Africa, is a vibrant city consistently ranked among the top ten cities to visit in the world. Stunning natural landscapes, diverse culture, f ine art, unique architectural design, and a thriving culinary scene - Cape Town is an absolute must on anyone’s travel bucket list. With views of the iconic V&A Waterfront and situated above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, The Silo Hotel occupies a portion of the historic grain silo complex located in the heart of South Africa’s “mother city,” as it is affectionately known. The building’s exterior was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and features multi-

faceted windows, shining bright in the evening like a contemporary lighthouse highlighting the Table Bay Harbour. Originally constructed in 1924, it was the tallest building in Sub-Saharan Africa, and served as the center of South Africa’s industrial and agricultural development for almost eighty years. The Silo Hotel has twenty-eight individually designed and decorated rooms, including one penthouse. Industrial architecture with modern f lare and cultural inspiration, the Silo is a unique and luxurious destination experience - for either the individual, vacationing couple, or family getaway. The Silo Spa features f ive treatment rooms where guests can completely unwind, indulging in the latest therapies and spa techniques. The facility is complete with a gym, sauna, and dedicated manicure/pedicure area. Dining at the Silo is an unforgettable exploration of contemporary dishes in any of its three restaurants - The Wallaston Bar, The Granary Cafe, or The Silo Rooftop. Situated on the sixth f loor, The Wallaston Bar is named after

the f irst export ship to ferry grain away from the original building in 1924, and features a menu of breakfast options, sandwiches and delicious f inger foods. The Granary Cafe offers a complete menu including Sunday roast and a royal tea time. The Silo Rooftop offers guests a relaxing culinary experience with unforgettable views. Open from 11:00am till sunset, the menu includes light dining options from f latbreads to poke bowls, as well as an extensive drink selection.

Be sure to plan your “things to do” list far in advance as Cape Town will leave you always wishing there were more time. Highlights include the V&A Waterfront; spanning 123 hectares, it offers one of the most complete shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences available. Be sure to explore the trails and breathtaking landscape views from the peaks of Table Mountain, overlooking all of Cape Town, and whether or not you’re a hiker - book a ride on the cableway for the most unique views. And of course a trip to Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without enjoying the pristine beaches and beautiful blue waters (Clifton Beaches is a local favorite).
