2019

marks our 9th year in business. 9 years! It's truly amazing how fast time f lies. It's also humbling to know that through all the years, you are still here with us. We launched MunaLuchi Bride Magazine out of a need to provide resources for brides of color. As a result, the couples we were providing inspiration for began asking for vendors that have experience with our weddings - multicultural weddings. In a quest to close the gap between multicultural couples and the wedding professionals that cater to them, we launched The Coterie. It's our preferred vendor platform, and as of today, we have matched thousands of brides and grooms with local vendors. And aside from the connections with the couples, the connections with the wedding vendors is what really keeps me inspired. It's not just a collection of vendors, servicing the multicultural community. It's a family. Throughout the pages of the Winter 2019 issue, you'll see what happens when we come together and work on the same wavelengths. From the styled shoots to the weddings, the collaborations and inspiration are endless. Our cover girl, Michelle Mitchenor of Lethal Weapon was a gem to photograph. Plus, we are excited to share an exclusive peek into her wedding day. As a millennial bride, she did not want to settle with a cookie-cutter wedding. Together with her husband, they went against the grain and formed their own traditions. They created experiences their guests still talk about today. Most importantly, they had the most amazing time at their wedding.

As you f lip through these pages, remember that your wedding should be everything you want it to be. And the options are endless. And as always, if you like what you see, share this issue with your friends and family.

SEVEN TIPS FOR PLANNING WEDDINGS IN BERMUDA Pristine turquoise waters glistening in the sun, cool pink sand between your toes, houses with colors that leap off like an artist’s paint pallet, and tropical flora and fauna everywhere you look. A wedding in Bermuda is not just a fantasy, but a reality that is just ninety minutes away from the East Coast of the United States. KNOW WHAT T YPE OF WEDDING YOU WANT – Even if you are still a bit undecided, we can help you select the perfect venue for your special day. Bermuda has many options to have romantic ceremonies and receptions. From public and private beaches with pink sand and blue water to cliffs overlooking the ocean with breathtaking views followed by receptions on super yachts, or f ive-star properties/private estates with immaculate grounds as well as historic forts and sunsets that can’t be beaten. No matter what you choose as your backdrop, it’s highly likely that you will be extremely happy with your decision and the memories made on that day will last a lifetime. ALWAYS HIRE AN EXPERIENCED WEDDING PL ANNER FOR YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING

– Whilst it is very possible for you to plan a destination wedding over the internet, it can become extremely stressful. Your engagement period is supposed to be about celebrating the new season to come. It should not be spent stressing over logistics; for example, knowing if vendors are as good as they portray themselves to be over the internet. Hiring an experienced Destination Wedding/Event Planner removes all of the pressure and anxiety from off of your shoulders. We know the best of the best on the Island and we can assist you with keeping your wedding on time and on budget. ESTABLISH A REALISTIC BUDGET – As the song says, Bermuda truly is Another World, however, it can be costly to have your wedding here. We have some of the world’s most talented people and services who always give value for money. If we know what you are willing to spend ahead of time, we are to be able to provide you with the best options to suit your budget. In some instances, if we are asked to provide a proposal based off of your vision alone, the f inal costs far exceed what you were willing to spend. Providing us with your budget gives us parameters to work within that will bring your desires to life at the most cost-effective way possible.

WRITTEN by CL AIRE-ANNE RAYNOR | WWW.ROSBDA.COM

DESTINATION WEDDINGS/EVENTS AND DIY CAN COST MORE THAN YOU THINK – “DIYing” a wedding/event is very trendy right now, but for a Destination Wedding/Event, shipping items to Bermuda, the customs duty and other fees often cost more than renting the items from a vendor on Island. Whilst it is true, there are items that will save you money if you bring it into Bermuda, consulting your wedding/event planner in advance is highly recommended to f ind the best solution.

PL AN TWO WEDDINGS - Bermuda is a sub-tropical island and like most islands, we are susceptible to inclement weather. Since we are in close proximity to the United States, unsettled weather going out to sea from there increases the chances that we will catch some if not all the residual weather. However, our unique place also gives us an advantage. Whilst the waters around our island span 200 nautical miles from land, and we are 21 square miles long, quite often it can rain “in” Bermuda territory but NOT “on” the Island of Bermuda. I always advise my clients who are planning outdoor events, to have a contingency plan in the event inclement weather forces us to make some last-minute changes. Rather than stress about what could happen, it’s best to plan for both, that way everything possible scenario is covered. CONSIDER A GIFT FROM BERMUDA TO SAY THANK YOU TO YOUR GUESTS – Destination couples like to give gifts to their guests, to thank them for coming to Bermuda to celebrate with them. However, to save money, they often bring things from their home town. Consider giving them something unique from the Island that will remind them of their trip here. ROS can give you a variety of options to choose from that will suit your specif ic taste and budget. TRUST YOUR WEDDING PL ANNER AND LET US DO ALL THE WORK – We recognize that some consider planning a wedding to be a family affair. For instance, some mothers take great joy in planning their daughter’s wedding. However, Destination Weddings can be stressful when planning via the internet. To alleviate the stress, choose an experienced planner that is knowledgeable about the Island and all it has to offer. Allow your planner to do all the work while you enjoy pre-wedding events and your engagement. There is nothing better than giving us the instructions and allowing us to do the work, like we say, “Sit Back, Sip Champagne, and Smell the Roses!”

ABOUT ROSE OF SHARON (ROS) The mission of Rose of Sharon (ROS) is to make your dream events a reality. Listening to your individual needs and desires is paramount to ensuring that this mission is accomplished every time. It’s our mantra to plan and style events for our clients, keeping in mind our desire for them to always be left with the feeling of awe and satisfaction. ROS, led by Claire-Anne Raynor, has been officially planning weddings and events in Bermuda since 1999; however, Claire-Anne realized one day while on a site visit with a bride, that she had been planning parties and dinners since elementary school Throughout the years, Claire-Anne and her team have successfully planned and executed a variety of weddings, including Christian, Hindu, and Nigerian. Their success is evidenced by the numerous accolades and praise they have received from their clients. Professionally, there are many proud moments for Claire-Anne. Two that come to mind are successfully executing the Islands first full Hindu wedding in 2014, just six weeks after the sudden death of her beloved husband Carl. The second is successfully planning and executing, along with some amazing local and international vendors, the 2018 Coterie Retreat in Bermuda, acting as the Conference Planner.

hen I think of Bermuda, I think of tropical beaches and beautiful blue waters. Yet I wanted to create something different than the traditional beach wedding to show destination wedding minded brides the full beauty Bermuda has to offer. It wasn’t necessary to go too heavy with the decor as we really wanted to focus on the ancient majesty of the church ruins. We decided that incorporating bright colors like fuchsias, oranges, & reds set against lush tropical green leaves like Monstera & Areca Palm would really highlight the gorgeous stone work in the church." The call time was 10:30 am. And although the forecast called for rain for the entire week, we were hoping for a little glimmer of sunshine, because it’s LA of course. Although the Golden State was not cooperating that day in terms of weather, the vibes were right and the setting was ready for magic to be created. Michelle Mitchenor, a Jersey girl by way of being a military kid, arrived in a brown fur coat, a blouse paired with baggy jeans — and accompanied by her bulldog Boom, who is the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. Michelle stars in the hit FOX tv show Lethal Weapon and was married this past October to Seven Seconds star Coley Mustafa Speaks. (More on her wedding after this editorial spread). Before becoming a series regular on FOX’s Lethal Weapon (she plays Detective Bailey), Michelle was heavily involved in the arts, performing with artists Beyonce, Rihanna, Pharrell and more. (She graduated from Ocean County Performing Arts Academy and obtained a BS in Dance Performance.) It wasn’t until 2015 when she took a leap to pursue a career in acting. Her big break came that same year when she auditioned for Spike Lee’s film component to the popular video game NBA 2K16.

Back on the set, stylist Charlie Brianna was lining up the looks for the day, while the glam team started prepping. When it came to fashion, we wanted to show a range of looks that would work for various brides. For beauty, a classic makeup look with various natural hairstyles would do. As the day progressed, Michelle was a natural, posing for each look like a pro and moving gracefully to music from the soundtrack to If Beale Street Could Talk. There was a moment when everything seemed to freeze, and all eyes were on her. She was in her element and we all stared in amazement while the flashes and shutter sounds from Joshua’s camera filled the room. It was tender. It was graceful. It was an experience. And we are so happy to have her grace our Winter cover.

interview by tristan barrocks

TELL US WHERE YOU'RE FROM.

I’m from NJ by way of being a military brat but we’re just going to say NJ. It's where I've lived the longest. HOW DID YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND MEET?

We both booked a pilot in 2016 for the a & e channel called The Infamous. And he was just trying to be the good guy that he is and reach out to the other actors on the show that he didn’t know. So he DM ’d me on Instagram and introduced himself, and I was just like cool, thanks, whatever. He mentioned that he owned a f itness gym.... and he was like, 'If you ever need a trainer… or something like that…' And was like ok... So now I'm thinking he’s trying to be a creep, but I’m also thinking, I could get a hookup. You know?! Get a discount on my personal training. It's all good! And we’re about to work together too? Bet. So we do the pilot but my character and his character didn’t interact within that pilot, so I didn’t meet him until the wrap party. Met him, was like ok cool, whatever...And then a week or so later he called me and was like ‘I’m interested.' And I was like oh okay... I didn’t know... you talking about gettin' personal training and all these other things. And after that, we went on our f irst date and kept going after that. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER? WHAT WERE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU THOUGHT WERE SWEET ABOUT HIM?

What I loved the most was that initial phone call. He was just like 'Listen, I would like to get to know you. I want to take you out.' It was very straight forward, and I didn’t have to question what he was interested in. He was interested in me and made it very clear. And from that point on our friendship blossomed. And at the time I was celibate,

so I made that very clear very early on and he was cool with it...which was great! Because I was in a place where I was like…look…until I'm ready... And he was super cool with it and because he had a Marine Biology background and he studied sharks and all these things… he has such an arsenal of information that I'm never not learning from him. I felt like even on a friend level he was depositing so much information into my life, just to help me as an artist with my businesses….without...you know…he wasn’t getting no cookies

an actor. Like, I don’t get it. And he was acting super upset and super unsupportive and we were watching it on TV and he was huff ing and puff ing on the couch and in my mind I was like, so maybe this won’t work out because this is my life. I had a viewing party the next day with all my close friends at the Soho house. So now he was calling and asking if he could still come and I was like, I don’t know. Can you come??! You got a problem with the intimate scene. So I don’t know!

(We all burst out in laughter).

WELL, IT IS L ANCE GROSS.

It was straight friendship.

(Michelle laughs)

SO THE BROTHER WAS JUST DROPPING

Don’t...don’t try to stick up for him! We get to the Soho house [and] I screen the episode. I go down to thank everyone for coming. And he goes ‘Wait, hold up one minute’, and then he starts talking about my trajectory and how much of a hard worker I am. Etcetera Etcetera. But he usually does that. He's just that guy. And he was like, 'So for that, we’re going to bring out a cake.' And I'm like ok, this is nice. A cake! And I go to blow out the cake and it says congratulations Michelle Mitchenor-Speaks, which is his last name. And I was like…Michelle Mitchenor Speaks… and I turn around and he was on his knee. So he faked a f ight and proposed to me in front of all my close friends that I personally invited [and] it was super intimate and perfect...

KNOWLEDGE!

Brother was just droppin' knowledge and gems and it had me open, but intellectually. So that’s the thing that stands out the most. Even today. We were just on our honeymoon and we were at the beach and he’s telling me about corals and all these other things in the ocean that I have no idea what he’s talking about and I’m like…dang you’re really smart. (Michelle smiles). So till this day, that's what I love the most about him. I can escape from whatever it is that we’re doing in the industry and he has such a well of knowledge. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE PROPOSAL.

So the proposal...He faked a f ight the night before so it got a little…yeah...dangerous

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT PL ANNING THE WEDDING. BECAUSE FOR A LOT OF COUPLES, THAT CAN SORT OF BE THE MAKE OR BREAK LEADING UP TO THE WEDDING. THERE ARE A LOT

AND HE’S AN ACTOR TOO SO…

So I did this role where I was opposite Lance Gross. And we had an intimate scene. And he pretended like he was really upset about it. And I was like what? This is m Y career . You're

OF THINGS THAT CAN BE STRESSFUL. BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF AMAZING MOMENTS THAT BRING YOU TOGETHER AS WELL. SO CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THAT?

Absolutely. In planning our wedding, we

wanted our guests to feel like they entered into our world. So from top to bottom, we wanted them to be able to leave this wedding and be like, I have somewhat of a glimpse of what it’s like to be within their lil’ love bubble. And we accomplished that and then some. His last name is Speaks, so our hashtag and theme was #lovespeaks. And throughout the wedding, when you went [through] different parts of the wedding...for example, as you went to take pictures [the slogan] was #lovecaptures. At our cocktail hour, we had spades, we had Jenga, you know…chess, so it was #loveplays. So we really just played on that and very much just incorporated our love theme. At the altar, he was kinda spitting somewhat of a poem with his vows, and he had his boys backing him up. It was like a whole call and response thing. And I was being my usual goofy self. And we boogied down the aisle to Method Man and Mary J Blige, "You’re all I need." And we just made it us. It was very east coast and honest, and grounded and genuine. And I felt like my wedding day felt like a slow dreamy sequence in a movie. BEAUTIFUL.

And one thing we did, which I suggest every bride do, if you have the opportunity. I’m giving you the keys right now... After you say your ido s and you walk down the aisle and are taking pictures. take (if you can) at least half an hour to sit down with your new husband or your new wife, and have your meal there together. We had our meal together, in our hotel room, and just got a second to [take it all in]. And we got to eat. So then when we went into the reception we did n’t have to worry about [not being able to eat] and we just had that moment with each other. So I highly suggest every bride do that. TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT FASHION, INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WEDDING. WHAT WAS SOME OF THE INSPIRATION?

So him and I both designed what we wore. I designed my dress and he designed his suit. He wore a mandarin style suit. We believe in a lot of the principles of Islam as well, so he got our names stitched in Arabic on his suit. [For] my gown, because I’m an actress and I do certain appearances and such, I just wanted to really feel like a bride and a princess. And I just didn’t want it to be something I can see myself wearing to an [award show] one day. A lot of wedding dresses, although they are all incredible, they

can look similar to what I can wear to some of those kinds of events. It was a mixture of vintage meets Coming to America at the end meets just who we are. Everything was custom. My veil was an arm shoulder veil because I didn’t like anything over my face or hair, so I’m always thinking what can we do to create what I like and what represents me and what represents us so as I walk down the aisle to my husband he fully sees me. THAT LEADS ME TO MY FINAL QUESTIONS WITH REGARDS TO THE WEDDING. WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE WEDDING OR ELEMENT? WAS IT THE SWEETS, THE AROMA, THE MUSIC? WAS IT THE DECOR? WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART?

That a really really really hard question, because, as I said, I really loved my wedding. For me, my favorite part is when I walked down the aisle and to see the suit he created and to see our names in Arabic on his suit... and my husband hit the Colin Kaepernick knee when I walked down the aisle. So he hit an actual knee. And that kinda was like... a moment for me because I knew he would get emotional but for him to actually like hit a knee...it was so special. And to see the amount of time in just how specif ic his whole look was, it just really warmed my heart. It was beautiful. SO LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT TODAY’S SHOOT. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? OBVIOUSLY, YOU’RE AN ACTRESS AND HAVE BEEN IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. BUT HOW WAS THIS EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER EXPERIENCES?

I was driving today thinking about representing different types of brides. You know what I mean? I had to kinda take away what I as a bride would like . None of these looks are anything near what I did which I think is perfect because I would hope that other women that are thinking about how will I wear my hair, what kind of dress... Those questions that you don’t know, cause you’ve never been married before. I just really hope that I helped accomplish just showing versatility in hair, in styles of gowns. And honestly even with my shape. I’m not a super small girl either. I very much got the hips and the black girl thang. So especially in this particular magazine - it’s a very diverse magazine and represents the international bride and I hope that we accomplished that and I hope that they’re happy. So that’s what makes it different. Each different look I tried to think, what if I’m the more simple bride who is very soft, or what if I’m the fun

one who likes to cheese all the time, or what if I’m f ierce from head to toe, or maybe a little more bohemian…Just incorporating all the different types of bridal styles was really important to me. CAN YOU SHARE WITH ME YOUR FAVORITE LOOK?

I think my favorite look will have to be the blush look. The blush look on the f ireplace with the candles. It was super romantic, and it reminded me of what it felt like to walk down the aisle. We put on specif ic type of music and set that type of tone. So it took me back to my wedding day. WITH SEASON 3 OF LETHAL WEAPON ENDING AND NEWS OF DAMON WAYANS POSSIBLY NOT RETURNING, WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE YOU AS FAR AS YOUR ROLE IN THE SHOW? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM MICHELLE MITCHENOR?

First, let me say that I’m really proud of my cast this season! We had a major shift this year and we came together and knocked it out of the park!! As far as if we will have another season or if Damon Wayans is returning or not, I have ZERO IDEA. However, what I will say is that I’m open to whatever God has in store for me. I’ve found that over-thinking about what’s to come in my business drives me crazy and it’s better to surrender it all to God. Lethal Weapon is my f irst Network Television show and I’m beyond grateful that I’ve been able to have this experience HOW CAN PEOPLE FOLLOW YOU AND GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

Absolutely! On all platforms type in Michelle Mitchenor. I’m like the only Mitchenor pretty much on the planet. soooo. (laughs). That won’t be hard there. Also, I have the Mitchenor Foundation. It's an art foundation for children in underprivileged and underserved communities. So we serve down in Skid Row. We go to Africa every year. We're hoping to head out to India this year, and we pretty much provide all visual and performing art-related programming to these children. That's like my baby right now, because I haven’t birthed my own children yet. So right now that’s my baby. So if you can support that in any way www. themitchenorfoundation.org. We're also on Amazon smiles, so if you shop Amazon, you can also contribute to the foundation as well. And yeah, Lethal Weapon! We're in our 3rd season, every Tuesday at 8 pm on FOX.

MICHELLE + COLEY LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

OC TO B E R 1 4 , 2 0 1 8 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y Wa n d e r l u s t C re a t i v e s

T

he rooftop of the the London in West Hollywood, with picturesque views of the city of Los Angeles, was the

perfect setting for Michelle and Coley’s October wedding. Themed #LOVESPEAKS − a play onColey’s last name − guests were taken through multiple intentional and thoughtful experiences. For starters, guests were serenaded by singers Jamal Lamont and Fevah during the unplugged ceremony. During the cocktail hour − themed LOVEPLAYS − the couple provided games like jenga, spades and chess for their guests' entertainment. A photo station where guests had the option to snap and sign polaroids was themed LOVECAPTURES, basically modernizing the typical wedding guestbook. The dinner reception featured signature cocktails called the SPEAKEASY and the Sip n' Speaks, in addition to a breakfast themed dessert bar, food stations and a surprise dance performance by Michelle and her bridesmaids.

For their wedding, the couple desired “to create an experience

that fully and personally represented [their] union and [their] love" - says Michelle. Both Michelle and Coley had their

outf its custom made. Michelle wore a custom ballgown by RMine with a one-of-a-kind shoulder veil while Coley wore a bespoke mandarin tuxedo with their names embroidered in Arabic on the sleeve and collar. One of the most precious moments for Michelle, was when she walked into the ceremony - her dad by her side - and Coley took a knee, while consumed with tears of joy. It was such an emotional moment for them both, and a true representation of their love for one another. Love spoke on October 14, 2018. And we pray it will continue to speak in their marriage and their future together.

"[Our wedding was] honest and grounded and genuine. And I felt like my wedding day felt like a slow dreamy sequence in a movie. - Michelle

ouston natives Ashley and David shared a circle of mutual friends but never truly knew each other until they f irst met on the campus of the University of Texas. It was in Ashley’s sophomore year and David’s freshman year that their friendship f irst began. With so much in common their connection was instantaneous, even having a few of the same courses and studying together. But with Ashley already in a relationship at the time she thought no further than friendship. It wouldn’t be until a few years later when their love story truly began. Ashley, now single, followed her heart in pursuing David. Flirting back and forth for while they f inally decided to go on an off icial f irst date, and in Ashley’s words, “we have been inseparable ever since...nine years later and I still get butterf lies when he walks into the room!” For the proposal, David knew it would be perfect to take the knee on the campus of the place where their love began - the University of Texas. It was during the last home game of the season, Ashley and David had special passes that gave them f ield access along with a group of friends and family. After the end of the game they took to the f ield, tossing around the football. After running the ball down the f ield and back, David asks Ashley to go out for another route. Turning around to come back, Ashley f inds David down on one knee along the f ifty yard line. After a brief moment it all clicked into place and she realized what was happening. With their friends and family watching, David asked Ashley to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife.

Ashley and David’s classically sophisticated wedding took place at the lovely Astorian in Houston, Texas. Ashley, a picture of elegance, wore a gorgeous f it and f lare, form-f itted ivory gown with a sweetheart neckline and low V-cut center, adorned with beautiful beading and lace - completed with a classic train. David handsomely awaited his bride by the altar where they were forever joined together as husband and wife. Their union featured a sand pouring ceremony symbolizing the permanence of their love, followed by a jumping of the broom to honor their African American heritage. Best Memories: "The best memory is being able to stop for a moment during the reception and take in the entire wedding and see all of the love and support in the room there for David and I. It was bittersweet because the day was going by so fast but I was able to take in that one moment and it warmed my heart so much. To see our day come together so beautifully was more than we could have ever imagined. I want to do it all over again!" Advice for Engaged Couples: "The most important thing is to remain as stress free as possible! The planning process goes by so fast as does the wedding day, so take in and enjoy every single moment! Start planning as early as possible because so many vendors book out well in advance, this too will help decrease stress. It's your time, so enjoy it! You can't please everyone! "

RAVEN + FRANKLIN EAST BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY

AUGUST 30, 2018 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y Vo l o d y m r y I va s h

Text by Samuel Naumick

I

ntroduced by a mutual friend, Raven and Franklin met during sophomore year while attending Virginia State University. Though in that moment they had been introduced to their soulmate, it wouldn’t be until a year later that they decided to give dating a try. Love soon took hold as they walked hand-in-hand throughout the remainder of pursuing their degrees, but that love would be tested, when following graduation, life would distance their relationship. Over the next three years, once a month was the extent of their time together, but their love persevered unshakeable in its foundation. And in 2016 Raven made the move to North Carolina, completing each other’s lives once again. It wouldn’t be long before Franklin began planning their perfect proposal, never wanting to be apart again.

For Raven, she knew Franklin was the one because of “the care and love he put into the simple things of our relationship. Franklin is a simple man, humble and because of this he knew how to enjoy the simple things in life and make what seems like a small gesture like cooking, seem as if it was the greatest one could have. I admired this and knew that with a heart like this, he would forever treat me like a queen.” Raven and Franklin’s estate wedding at the Park Chateau was timeless, elegant and with a touch of whimsy. After trying on over sixty gowns, Raven ultimately decided to design her own dress. Utilizing a gorgeous jeweled fabric with a hint of sparkle she created a long two-part Great Gatsby-esque dress, with a sweetheart cut mid-back completed with a f lowing embellished cape. Together, Raven and Franklin jumped the broom,as Franklin’s parents had before them at their own wedding, crossing over into the threshold of happily ever after.

The proposal took place during the weekend of Raven’s birthday. To celebrate her special occasion they decided to take a trip to Washington DC. Little did she know that this particular birthday would be one of the most memorable of all. It would be during her birthday dinner at a popular restaurant that the pieces would begin to fall into place. Upon their arrival she was greeted by their family and closest friends. Still thinking it was solely about her birthday, Raven had not suspicions that her “surprise birthday dinner” was also soon to be her surprise marriage proposal. And after much celebrating with good food, drinks, and dancing, Franklin spoke to the entire party, sharing with everyone his love and appreciation for the woman who was soon to be his f iancé, before taking a knee and asking her to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife.

WINTER.2019

Best Memories: My best memory was the garter removal. I was in total awe by my husband although I wasn’t shocked. My husband is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and this moment for him was important (he’d been talking about it for 2 years). Since I had no inclination of what he would do for the garter removal, I knew he would make it special, funny and sweet. To see the smile on his face, joy in his eyes and all the mouths dropping from his performance made me feel so incredibly special and loved. It was an amazing moment.

REAL WEDDINGS

Advice for Engaged Couples: "Communicate with your partner and be transparent. Understand the that the commitment the two of you made to one another begins and ends with you. It’s for this reason that your wedding must ref lect who the two of you are as individuals. I also think it’s important to give yourselves ample time to plan out the wedding that you would like to have. There’s a notion that a wedding must take place no later than a year after engagement, but it doesn’t. If you want to take your time to plan your wedding and grow closer to one another, do just that and stand f irm that you are doing what’s best for your relationship. On your wedding day, be in the moment and take lots of pictures. You will get pulled a million different ways that evening, but it is important to realize this is your big day f illed with friends and family and you want as many memories as possible. Don’t worry about the time. It will move whether you check your watch or not so, enjoy your spouse, family, and friends. Of course, before the ceremony, there is so much going through your head. It is extremely important to take some time for yourself and take it all in. As my husband likes to say, “take a step back and look at the forest and not just the tree.” Focus on the big picture and everything will fall in place. I urge you to take this approach with your relationship as you move forward. Be mindful of you and your partners big picture. Focus on the activities to get there and how the two of you can achieve that."

THE PROPOSAL: April 2018 would prove to be a very special month for us.

Unbeknownst to Jasmin what was supposed to be just another one of our adventures together, I was actually planning to propose to Jasmin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jasmin planned a fun f illed few days in Las Vegas for us, all while I was secretly planning an unforgettable last night in Las Vegas that would melt Jasmin’s heart. Calling upon many of Jasmin’s best friends, I invited them to Vegas for the proposal. With support and love from a host of family members and friends I proposed to Jasmin the night of April 15, 2018 in the Linq promenade. Complete with a serenade, photographers, her best friends surprising her, hosts of strangers surrounding us, beautiful bright lights from the nearby water fountain and the observatory called the high roller, I dropped to one knee and asked Jasmin Miller for her hand in marriage. The moment was magical and very much like a fairytale. Jasmin with tears in eyes, and joy in her heart said “Y ES” to my proposal. DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION: We love to travel! We both travel

4 degrees of separation S O N YA + E M M A N U E L New York, New York

WEDDING DATE:

WEDDING LOCATION: OCCUPATIONS: HOW THEY MET:

Laguna Niguel, California

Attorney and Electrical Engineer Hungarian author Frigyes Karinthy believed that all

people are connected by a maximum of 6 degrees of separation, but in our situation we were only 4 degrees apart. Through social engineering, Facebook had recommended to me to add Sonya as a friend by virtue of the fact that I had friend A, who was friends with B, and B happened to be friends with Sonya. Of course I was drawn to her picture and made inquiries about Sonya, but friend A said to me “Manny, you aren’t ready for that.” Fast forward a few months later, friend B was organizing a 2016 New Year’s trip for a group of friends to Punta Del Este, Uruguay and invited friend A to come with his friends. Naturally, Sonya and I were invited. However, friend A decided to drop out of the trip, so I then planned to drop out of the trip also, but when I noticed Sonya’s name as one of the participants on the trip, I decided to go on the trip. So on the trip in Uruguay, I f inally got to meet Sonya in Punta Del Este and I was immediately smitten. THE PROPOSAL: After 18 months of a long distance relationship between

Chicago and NYC, I was able to get a transfer from Chicago to my company’s corporate headquarters in Northern New Jersey. After 6 months of being in the NYC metro area together, I realized one of the most important decisions I had to make in my life was now upon me. I knew in my heart that Sonya was the one true love for me, and as such, without hesitation, I decided to move ahead and make preparations to propose to Sonya. I worked secretly with a

HOW THEY MET: Although Lynn and Stanley attended the same middle school, they did not know one another. It wasn't

until her junior year and his senior year in North Miami Beach Senior High when they bumped into one another in the cafeteria. That was 2010, and they remained friends ever since. THE PROPOSAL: After 7 years of courting, Stanley determined it was the time to f lip the page. Right away, he met up with

his parents and got their blessings. He then met with Lynn’s parents/family and received their blessings. Stanley then met with Lynn’s best friends, which helped pick out the ring and create a lovely “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” poster which took Lynn’s attention while Stanley got on one knee to pop the question. The plan was to take holiday pictures and Stanley was setting up everything. The shoot was set for Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Anne Kolb Nature Center. Stanley picked Lynn up and drove to the secret location. By the grace of God, Stanley was able to keep it all a secret after days of being probed, so you can imagine the suspense Lynn was experiencing. As they arrived to the location, Lynn was amazed by the beauty of the park. There, they met with the photographer who was accompanied by one of Stanley's good friend. After taking multiple photos, they relocated under the bazooka where it would all take place. As the two stared at the breathtaking view of their background. Lynn noticed a group of people (their family and friends) at a distance with a sign and began to try to read it. She was able to make out the f irst word "Will" and as she turned to ask Stanley for help, she was completely stunned because he was on one knee. Vulcan Park and Museum

HOW THEY MET: We met in 2008 at Jess Lanier High School

in Bessemer, Alabama during his senior and my sophomore year. Before dating Michael, I actually dated one of his best friends for about a month. Michael referred to me as his “sister” during that brief period. When his friend and I broke up, I would see Michael in the hallways, and he would act as if he didn’t even know me. A couple of months later, we ended up sharing an elective class together. One day, just out of nowhere, he pulled my hair. That’s when I knew he liked me. Some time passed and on another instance, one of Michael’s friends called me out of

the classroom and told me that Michael wanted to “talk” to me. In my head I was like, “I’m not about to talk to him.” I reluctantly gave him my number. He texted and called me the same night. Surprisingly, we had a really good conversation because I initially thought he was very quiet. We became close friends and began dating off icially in November 2010. THE PROPOSAL: We got engaged on my 24th birthday, September 2017. I was mad at Michael because he had another event to attend the same night that I couldn’t attend because I was seven months pregnant with our son Major. The whole time he was like, “You’re going to have a good birthday,” and I was thinking to myself, how am I going to have a good birthday because I felt like I was about to be ditched. We went to dinner at Flemings Steakhouse in Birmingham. When we go out to eat dinner, we usually eat pretty fast. This time, we sat and mingled. We f inished our meal and the waiter suggested that we get dessert, and Michael was insistent on me having dessert. When the waiter brought out the plate, I saw the ring arranged in the strawberry. I looked at Michael and was like, “What is this?” Then I turned around and saw my older sister Naquela recording the whole thing. Michael got down on one knee and asked me, “Nenecia Tiana Webster, will you be my wife?” I just nodded by head “yes.” Everyone in the restaurant applauded. It was like a scene out of a movie. One of the other restaurant patrons gave Michael a $50 bill to congratulate us.

E N G AG E M E N T S

WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE?

Michael and I went bowling on my 17th birthday at Vestavia Bowling. We made a bet that whoever won the f irst game would win $20. I won. Michael, being a sore loser, wanted a chance to win his money back. He was able to redeem himself the next game. We called it even. FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? We like going out to dinner, having drinks and taking trips. HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR?

So far, it’s been smooth. The planning part is not as bad as people make it. We’ve been blessed enough to not have to burden others with the planning and the f inancial aspect of paying for a wedding. It feels good

to be able to do this on our own. We’ve had it easy choosing vendors because our venue has a list of businesses they work with so it narrows down the decision-making process. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY?

We’re looking forward to off icially becoming a family. We have a one-year-old together, and he gets to be a part of our special day. It wouldn’t surprise us if he steals the show!

WHEN DID YOU GET MARRIED AND WHERE? September 30th 2017, Kenya School of Law – Nairobi, Kenya. WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING LIKE? Our wedding was simple, beautiful and so much fun! We had an outdoor garden ceremony wedding followed by a reception at the same venue with our close friends and relatives. AS YOU CELEBRATE YOUR ANNIVERSARY, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?

DIFFERENTLY FOR YOUR WEDDING? Oliver: “I wish we had posed for more pictures as a couple, with my family, and bridal party! Everything was very candid and beautiful, but posed pictures would have captured better photos for print. Other than that everything else was just perfect for us.” Angela: “I have been planning weddings professionally since 2015, so I def initely planned my own wedding. My mistake though was not getting a professional coordinator for the day. I had amazing friends who helped me out on the day, but I was also the bride that was so focused on ensuring that the day was going well. Looking back I wish I took a step back and enjoyed the day a little bit more!” WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A COUPLE?

We love to travel together. Just being in the car, driving together even to the countryside is so much fun for us. I (Angela) do most of the cooking, but he helps out every once in a while. WHO COOKS?

I’m also a Tech blogger.” WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE? God, honesty, respect & communication! Communication is key and a lot of supporting each other! HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SPARK IN YOUR MARRIAGE? Angela: “We are always working on a project together – whether it is related to my wedding planning business or his automotive locksmith business – projects together means spending more time together.” Oliver: “...and date nights, we actually have set date nights and we have a list of vacation spots we plan to visit together.” TELL US ABOUT THE SHOOT. WHAT INSPIRED IT? As he mentioned earlier on we really did not have enough pose pictures together from our wedding day, that we could print, that was mainly why we decided to do the shoot. Also we were celebrating our f irst year and we thought why not do an anniversary shoot that would double up as a ‘wedding photos re-do.’ WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER? Angela: “His kind heart and calm spirit.” Oliver: “She is very open, jovial and very loving.” WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE FOR NEWLYWEDS? Marriage is what you make of it! It is a journey that you get to def ine as a couple. Always put God f irst in your marriage and love and cherish each other. Communicate! Communicate! Communicate! Communication is Key! You should always be open and honest about everything, it makes it easier.

As I entered the room my husband was singing "I Belong to You" by William McDowell, then to see him actually crying to see me in my wedding dress (custom made by Aretha Foster of AnR Fashions). He later told me "You looked like an angel" which made the moment even more memorable. There were so many moments, the moment when we walked into the reception, we will forever cherish! A circle is endless, has no beginning or end. This means that a circle goes on forever just like our love. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HIM? What I love most about my husband...I love the way he loves me! He knows he must f irst love God, then loving me just seems to come naturally. WHAT DOES HE LOVE MOST ABOUT YOU? What I love most about my wife...she’s the true epitome of a virtuous woman; she’s a woman of faith, she respects me as a man and her husband, she has been an outstanding example for our children, she always carries herself with respect (always my lady), she takes care of her temple both spiritually and physically, she’s a good steward over our f inances, always conscious in building our home. She’s beautiful inside as well as out. She makes it easy to love her!

aquita and Andrew celebrated twelve years of marriage with a beautiful anniversary photography session in Paris, France. Having met in high school their love has been a blessing, guiding them throughout their development not only as individuals but also as a loving couple. Read all about their experiences as they look back on their life together and continue looking forward to many more blissful years to come.

HOW DID YOU MEET? We met in high school so we have known each other for a LONG time. We grew up both as adults and a couple together. WHEN DID YOU GET MARRIED AND WHERE?

We got married

August 19, 2006 in Mississippi. WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING LIKE? Our wedding was glamorous and most importantly we had pink as one of our colors; my favorite if you couldn’t tell from the anniversary photos. Andrew let me plan and assisted with some decisions but really allowed me to have the wedding I wanted. AS YOU CELEBRATE YOUR ANNIVERSARY, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY? I’m most grateful my dad was still alive to walk me down the aisle; that’s every girl’s dream. He passed in 2010, but I know he approved of us together and trusted Andrew would forever take care of me. WAS THERE ANY THING YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY FOR YOUR WEDDING? No, we both agree our wedding was perfect. We both were just starting our careers and saved to pay for our wedding ourselves and it was a very beautiful wedding. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A COUPLE? We both like to travel for a weekend without the kids. This gives us time to connect and focus on our relationship. WHO COOKS?

Ha, should we tell them babe?...he does!

DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN OR PETS? We have two children, Jordan (6) and Alaia (2). They are the joys of our life and a ref lection of our love. WHEN IT COMES TO CAREER, WHAT DO BOTH OF YOU DO AND

Balancing career with family is tough; I’m in Finance and Andrew is in Insurance. Our weekends are our time to connect as a family and also as a couple. HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME FOR EACH OTHER?

trust, and intimacy are all important qualities in a successful marriage. For us, being able to be truly committed and connected with each other is the foundation of our marriage. Marriage is hard work, but having a solid foundation allows our marriage to continue to grow. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SPARK IN YOUR MARRIAGE? Laughter—we laugh with, and at each other ALL the time. That, and great sex haha. TELL US ABOUT THE SHOOT. WHAT INSPIRED IT? Last year I told Andrew he should take me to Paris for one of our anniversaries. Fast forward to 2018, I f ind out I was going to be working in Europe the whole month of August. So I told Andrew he should come to Europe to meet me in Paris for our anniversary. I immediately started planning my anniversary gift to him; professional photos. When I found Daria I could see in her work she was amazing. We are both very appreciative she was able to capture us on our anniversary. The shoot exceeded both of our expectations. We have memories from our anniversary that will last a lifetime and we can’t thank Daria enough. We absolutely love the pictures! WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HIM? Andrew has swag; he’s probably more stylish than me to be honest! He’s also handsome, smart, and funny. What I love most about Andrew is his self lessness. He is willing to go above and beyond for me and our kids and truly has a good heart. As my soulmate, he balances me and knows how to handle my big personality. WHAT DOES HE LOVE MOST ABOUT YOU? Paquita is beautiful, smart, ambitious, stylish; I could go on and on, but what I love most about my wife is her ability to make me a better person. Her ability to bring out the best in me and elevate me both professionally and personally, is what I love the most. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE FOR NEWLYWEDS? You have to be able to communicate with each other. Being able to openly share and express your emotions, opinions, and thoughts respectfully is the most important advice we can share.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE?

Everything we did was to make sure we had an amazing day celebrating love with our loved ones. KRYSTAL + DAMON R OC K WA L L , T E X A S NOVEMBER 18, 2018 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y Te s h o r n J a c k s o n

t was an evening seemingly like any other but ultimately would come to change Krystal and Damon’s lives forever. While going through his exercise routine at the gym, Damon was suddenly stunned by a woman on the treadmill - he recalls how Krystal was “looking so good that I just had to go over and speak to her.” Though Krystal was not in the mood for conversation, forcing Damon to turn up the charm. After a few attempts of trying to exchange contact information, Damon was f inally able to receive her Instagram handle before leaving the gym - but the challenge of his pursuit was not yet over. Reaching out to Krystal through Instagram, Damon waited without a response before sending another message - that one too going opened but unanswered, as Krystal continued to feel out the situation. Finally, one evening after going to bed, Damon was awakened out of sleep to the sound of his phone alerting him of a message. They chatted through direct messages for a while before exchanging numbers. It was during a conversation about the importance of family that Krystal began to open up. They agreed to meet outside of the gym, going out to dinner, where they “hit it off so well, we started spending a lot of time together.” Over that time their relationship continued to grow as they discovered how much in common they shared - so much so that their meeting began to seem like fate in action. Damon knew Krystal was the one since the f irst time he laid eyes on her, though it wasn’t the f irst time he saw her; having witnessed her in a dream a few weeks before their meeting. He knew then, seeing her on the treadmill when their paths f irst crossed, that a higher power was guiding him to his future wife. Krystal knew Damon was the one when after spending a long enough time together she realized he fulf illed a checklist of characteristics her ideal husband would demonstrate - the type of husband she prayed for. And so it was on Thanksgiving when Damon would make their love forever, asking Krystal for her hand in marriage. After receiving her parents blessing, and surrounded by their family, Krystal accepted Damon’s proposal with every beat of her heart.

Krystal and Damon’s fairytale wedding was perfectly set within the Castle at Rockwall venue in Rockwall, Texas. Krystal was gorgeous in a custom green gown by designer Ese Azenabor, fulf illing her childhood dream of being married in a brilliant emerald dress. Structured yet still f lowing in movement, the green gown was trimmed in lace, hand beading, and was completed with a twenty foot long veil. Damon was dapper in a custom classy tan and ivory suit designed and styled by Don Murphy, with a surprise unique vest depicting the couples picture printed into the material along the back. The couple paid homage to their ancestry by having recitation of their family heritage within the ceremony, as well as jumping the broom into their new life together as husband and wife. Best Memories: Our best memory is our First Dance. We both really wanted to swing dance to our f irst dance song, but didn't know if we'd be able to because of the wedding dress being made the way it was made. We started dancing and told each other we're not going to be able to swing dance because of the dress, but we were like, "Lets try it." So we started swing dancing and it went really well. We were so happy that we were able to swing dance to the song, because we had learned how to swing dance just for our wedding, and we would have been sad if we weren't able to swing dance to our song on our wedding day. We actually surprised each other, because we were able to move so well. We can truly say this was a blessing, especially due to the fact that we thought we were not going to be able to pull it off.

Advice for Engaged Couples: Try to be

understanding and accommodate each other’s wishes when planning for a wedding, because there will be some disagreements. Also, plan ahead if you are getting married, because a lot of money will be spent on the wedding. And actually I would advise to take some time and save money so there will be less f inancial strain when it comes time to pay vendors.

ollege sweethearts Kristin and Isaiah met on the campus of Hampton University towards the end of their undergraduate degree program. Being apartment neighbors they were each other’s boy and girl next door. Their connection was instantaneous, quickly becoming close friends; talking long into the night, discovering new music together, sharing meals - almost always at each other's side. With a connection as close as theirs it seemed destined to blossom into love, and before long they were planning their f irst date. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC would come to hold a special signif icance to Kristin and Isaiah, not only being the location of their f irst date, but also the place in which their love was set on the path to happily ever after. Informing their family and friends about his intentions, Isaiah had them f lown in to celebrate the event. And, while enjoying the beauty of the art around them, Isaiah found his moment, presenting Kristin with a ring and asking her to spend the rest of her life with him as husband and wife. Their engagement was soon followed by a cookout surrounded by their loved ones. For Kristin, she knew Isaiah was the one because they “were able to build a solid foundation of friendship and had an understanding of one another that I never had with anyone else. We grew with each other over the years, and that consistency kept me intrigued and sure of him.”

Kristin and Isaiah’s beautiful ballroom wedding in historic Philadelphia was timeless in its elegance with a modern touch. Isaiah handsomely awaited his bride at the altar, while Kristin lit up the room in a spaghettistrap, mermaid-style gown with sheer paneling and hand-beading - complete with a cathedral veil. With the love and support of family and friends, they were joined together forever as husband and wife. Best Memories: Isaiah's best memory from our wedding was saying our vows in front of our friends and family who've prayed and supported us since the beginning. Kristin's favorite memory was the rehearsal dinner which was an all white affair, and having all of our loved ones share special stories of Isaiah and I. My father did an impromptu speech that was really special and made my weekend. Advice for Engaged Couples: Don't forget to focus on your relationship while you plan for the wedding. Your wedding will only last a day, but your marriage, prayerfully, will last a lifetime. Also, remember to do exactly what you want to do regarding your wedding. So many people will have thoughts and suggestions, but it's important to ensure your wedding day, and ultimate marriage, is a ref lection of your unique love story.

WEDDING IDEAS Inspired by the Toronto calligraphy artist, Sylvia Wong, featuring a unique intersection of marble and leather. Photographed by Felicity Moments

The inspiration... "This modern chic shoot was inspired by the international project created by Toronto calligraphy artist Sylvia Wong. In 2016 Sylvia created the Just Married Jacket for her own nuptials. Her jacket went viral and soon gained momentum as a coveted bridal piece across Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, New York, Los Angeles and many more cities. Accents of leather and marble were used for this shoot. The textures of the leather and marble are unconventional yet so eye catching. We opted for a simplistic yet edgy and fashion forward shoot with a focus on hair, makeup and wardrobe. The groom wore a European cut tuxedo with a textured pattern and a leather bomber to complement the leather bomber worn by the bride with Just Married written in calligraphy across the back (The original). The leather theme is carried out in the stationery as well featuring an invitation suite incorporating both leather and marble accents. A minimalistic tablescape is featured with greenery runner marble plates, marble accented flatware and marble place cards with calligraphy. A non-traditional marble swirl cake with gold accents is featured to tie in the theme as well. We had a blast collaborating to produce this shoot and we are ecstatic to share the outcome ."

The inspiration... "Our vision was to "picture a garden coming into the room" and be captured in time. We created a moody and organic yet somehow effortlessly-pristine, luxe feel. Perfectly imperfect and one of a kind similar to a blackberry. We took those fresh and floral inspirations, paired with gilded decor accents and brought them inside to the museum setting to be captured in time as classic and beautiful, forever."

The inspiration... "I had the vision of really wanting to celebrate the fall and winter season, and bring in those deep autumnal tones of browns and oranges, pairing them with softer pinks and beige, and pops of bright yellow here and there. I knew that the florals would be a major component in telling the story, since the venue was an open, urban warehouse space. The flowers told the seasonal narrative, and became the perfect backdrop to our couple’s ceremony. Crisp whites and soft greys allowed the couple to truly shine."

The inspiration... "The Tuscan countryside was backdrop to this beautiful styled shoot on the famed estate of the Villa Barberino. The villa's Italian gardens were the inspiration for many of the design elements chosen. We wanted to maintain the culture and ambiance of the area, utilizing authentic Italian made chargers. The rustic nature of Tuscany served as inspiration for the use of the wooden table and chairs. The key focus for bridal styling was the custom f loral jewelry created by All RelEvents using f loral elements pulled directly from the villa gardens. The necklace contains lush garden roses, succulents, lisianthus and SwarovskiÂŽ pearl crystals in rose peach. The custom jewelry set was completed with a wrist cuff and f loral ring to match. The rosy and peachy tones were chosen to complement the backdrop of the peach colored stucco walls of the Villa Barberino estate. " - Denise Kelly of All RelEvents
