received a Facebook reminder a couple of weeks ago of an update I posted in my story back in March of 2020. In the post, I was complaining that my childrens' school just announced they would be closing for 5 weeks in light of the oncoming pandemic. Seeing this flashback post to two years ago, I was still able to remember exactly how I felt at that moment...I was concerned about what would become of the pandemic, worried about how I would balance work and my children during the five week period, but also hopeful that five weeks would be more than enough time for us to get through it.

Looking back, I never would have expected the pandemic to continue for two years. No one did really. Yet, here we are still trying to navigate and get back to some sense of normalcy. Thankfully, COVID restrictions are being lifted and weddings are back in full effect. Speaking of weddings, 2022 is considered the year of the wedding boom. A record number of weddings - over 2.6 million - will take place this year alone. This is more than any year since 1984. This boom won't just stop in 2022, but will trickle into 2023. Although couples are anxious to celebrate in grand style, I do believe that smaller intimate weddings are here to stay. And small and intimate doesn't mean inexpensive! The prices of goods has risen and will continue to do so until we are truly clear of this pandemic. There will be an increased emphasis on destination weddings as well as destination engagement sessions. It's all about the experience. This issue, our first of 2022, is loaded from cover to cover with inspiration from real weddings and styled shoots of all sizes and budgets. As you continue on your planning journey, I hope you leave with new ideas and thoughts around how to make your wedding uniquely yours. Happy Planning!

Their values are engrained in every part of the brand, from sustainable practices to affordability, and inclusivity. McBride Sisters has grown into the largest Black-owned wine company in the US. edgy/alternative wedding style TEXT BY LINDA WALLENTINE

W

hen thinking about fall weddings, images of elegant gold, brown, and rust hues set against crisp autumn backdrops probably come to mind. However, not every couple shares the same vision. Maybe your ideal fall wedding includes a bit more drama than pumpkins, cornucopias, and delicate florals. Or, maybe you gravitate towards fall’s gothic energy more than traditional harvest vibes. Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong way to plan your fall nuptials. But for couple’s looking to break tradition, check out these alternative and edgy wedding ideas below!

Photographer: Manda Marie Kar from Imágemária | Boots: House of Elliot

Don Boots and Booties For brides and grooms, swap out your traditional wedding-day heels and loafers for an edgy pair of boots. Think chunky leather platforms, knee-high lace booties, combat boots, and moto-boots.

Accessorize with Leather

Leather is classy and bad-ass. And why not embrace both on your wedding day! For added style and warmth (especially for outdoor celebrations), add a classic leather jacket to your look. For an adorably punk photo opportunity, the bride and groom can even wear monogrammed Mr. & Mrs. jackets. The bridal party can join in, too.

WEDDING PLANNING

Skip the White Dress Instead of wearing a traditional white gown, consider a sultry black lace dress. A dip dye skirt can also add some unexpected drama. This special dying technique is perfect for brides looking to add a pop of color to their wedding attire. Explore moody shades of gray, black, and deep jewel tones for a unique take on typical fall colors..

Serve Savory, Not Sweet Desserts

For an unexpected take on dessert, serve your guests savory selections instead of sweet ones. Try a nectarine and sour cake, sweet potato, custard and sultana cake, or a salted caramel popcorn sundae.

Concoct Bold Cocktails Photo: Elysian Bloom Photography

Embrace Dark Decor

Most couple’s shy away from dark decor. But in this case, embrace it! Creating a gothic glam aesthetic is a great way to add a bit (or a lot) of spookiness while maintaining a sense of luxury. Victorian-era details, like chandeliers, and moody color palettes, such as deep burgundys and plums, alongside flickering antique candles can create an atmosphere that’s both elegant and fantastical.

Photo: Elysian Bloom Photography

If ghoulish details are part of your fall wedding dreams, cocktails can be a great way to incorporate a darker theme into your wedding. Think mysterious bubbling concoctions served from steaming cauldrons with clever names, like “Till death do us part,” “Poisoned Apple,” and “Witch’s Heart.”.

JUSTIN ALEXANDER SIGNATURE COLLECTION: STYLE - PHYLLID

Which Gown Silhouette is for You? TEXT BY ANGEL A CONNER

Are you team mermaid or team ball gown? Find the wedding dress silhouette that fits your personality.

JUSTIN ALEXANDER SIGNATURE COLLECTION: STYLE - ADABEL

sheath If you are concerned that trumpet and mermaid wedding dresses will be too constricting, consider a sheath dress. Sheath wedding dresses feature a narrow shape that flows from neckline to hem, accentuating curves while not hugging them too tightly. Shapewear may be a must, as sheath dresses do not have as much structure.

18

NO. 24 | SUMMER 2021

mermaid Mermaid wedding dresses are a slightly tighter take on a trumpet wedding dress. Built for brides who really want to show off their curves, mermaid dresses are fitted across the body and flare out right above the knee. Because of this, they are more constricting than a trumpet dress. However, they exude old Hollywood glamour and will definitely make heads turn at your wedding.

a-line If the volume of a ball gown is a concern for you, consider an A-line wedding gown. An A-line wedding gown features a fitted bodice through the waist and a thinner skit that flows to the ground in the shape of an A.

trumpet

JUSTIN ALEXANDER SIGNATURE COLLECTION: STYLE - GRANT

Like the name, trumpet wedding dresses are shaped like a trumpet. Also known as a fit and flare wedding dress, the trumpet wedding dress is fitted throughout the body and flairs out mid-thigh. This dress silhouette is perfect for brides who want to show off their figures.

ballgown Have a Cinderella moment in a stunning ball gown. Ball gowns have bodices that fitted down to the waist and very full skirts. While ball gowns look well on most body types, keep in mind that may have to be tailored to not look overwhelming on petite brides. Also due to the layers of fabric used to construct the full skit, ball gowns may be heavy and will definitely take up a lot of space.

SWAN HOUSE AT ATL ANTA HISTORY CENTER

WEDDING DATE: October 7, 2022

WEDDING LOCATION: Altos de Chavon, Dominican Republic OCCUPATIONS:

HR Professionals

H O W T H E Y M E T: Damian and Aisha met in 2014, our junior year while attending our Alma Mater, Morgan State University.

and commitment he shows our family is everlasting. Damian literally feels like home. That's how I know.

THE PROPOSAL: While on a date that I believed to be a celebration for Damian's recent job promotion, Damian took the opportunity to propose! Completely caught off guard, after talking about sweet everythings and walking to our destination Damian got down on one knee and asked to spend a lifetime with me. He had always listened to the hints I left for him and executed the magical night perfectly! It was perfect, just the two of us, one talented photographer and great food!

ENGAGEMENT SESSION THEME: For our engagement shoot, it was extremely important to us to have something that was timeless and elegant. We want our grandchildren to be able to look at our photos and say "Geez, our grandparents look amazing!"

HOW DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS "THE ONE"? When I realized that I truly feel like the best version of myself with Damian. I can be silly, serious, emotional, anxious, excited and all above. He accepts every part of me. Damian isn't just my soon to be husband, but my greatest and best friend. I miss him when he's gone, and love every moment spent with him. I love seeing him as a father. The sacrifice, love, compassion

FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? Our best times are spent traveling, trying new restaurants and exploring our semi new city, Atlanta. FIRST DATE? Our first official date was to the movies, then out for drinks and conversation. HOW HAS WEDDING PL ANNING BEEN? Planning a destination wedding has been more challenging than initially anticipated, still, we are making great progress and excited for the big day! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO? Our first look as I walk down the aisle, for sure!

Chloe+ Rashad L AKE COMO, ITALY PHOTOGRAPHED BY Matteo Cuzzola Photography

H OW DI D YOU MEET? I actually met Rashad while I was visiting an HBCU located in Fort Valley, Georgia named Fort Valley State University for homecoming back in 2012. Our mutual best friend, Chelsea Murray, was crowned Miss Fort Valley and asked me to join her for all the festivities that weekend. I had never been to Fort Valley and as Chelsea gave me the grand tour around campus she introduced me to a very charismatic, and polite young man named Rashad. At first, I am not going to lie I thought he was a little young to be in college but I soon found out that he was well into his junior year of college as a political science major. Upon our first encounter, I knew I “caught his eye” because when he went to greet me for the first time he held my hand a little longer than usual. I knew he was interested at that moment but I definitely thought he was way too young and didn’t pay him any mind for the rest of the trip. Fast forward 3 years later, my best friend Chelsea called me the summer prior to me beginning law school at Florida A&M University’s College of law and told me that her friend Rashad would also be starting there as a first-year law student just like me. Immediately, I felt like I could breathe a little easier because I would “kind of know” someone at orientation. She gave me his cell phone number and told me to give him a call. We stayed friends throughout our first year, mainly because we were so focused on our studies, however, it wasn’t until our second year of law school that I made the first move. My exact words were, “I like you and what are you going to do about it.” Rashad immediately told me he had to “call me back.” Later I found out that he needed some time to process everything because he had never had a woman bold enough to tell him that they liked him. Long story short we are 6 years strong into our relationship and getting married this September. I guess my boldness worked out for me in the long run. THE PROPOSAL: Well, Rashad is not the best at keeping secrets and during our 6-year relationship, he would always spoil surprises and tell me what he had planned. However, this time I was in town for his birthday celebrating him. On the day of the engagement, he attempted to take me to the mall and buy me new shoes for his birthday dinner. Immediately, I knew something was up because we were having a quiet dinner with family and typically we dressed pretty casual for these things. However, I went along with it but I still really did not have a clue what was happening. I am dressed and ready to go to dinner and I walk into a restaurant where I saw no one really seated. I asked Rashad, "where is everyone?” I knew we were not that early, but I proceeded to walk towards a private room in a restaurant and I was handed 4 dozen roses by the waitress and when I walked into the room I immediately saw some of my closest friends and found out that my parents had driven in earlier the day before. I was in utter shock that this fiance of mine was able to pull off having my closest friends and family in town, without me knowing. Rashad proceeded to take my hand, gave a beautiful speech about the love that he had for me, and asked me the most important questions he had ever asked, “will you marry me?” I was in utter shock all I could do was nod my head “yes.” I love Rashad so much and he made sure

some of my close friends and family were present to share this special moment with me. He is always thinking of me and always does his best to make sure my family and friends are involved. I wanted to showcase that all of our hard work and dedication to one another could be captured in the beauty of Lake Como’s mountainous landscape. I wanted to normalize black luxury and let others know that you can have it all; we can travel the world, be in love, and enjoy the good life if we choose it. The first location for the photoshoot took place at the beautiful Villa Del Balbianello, which is an 18th-century villa known for its beautiful garden and unique landscape; films like Star Wars and James Bond were captured there as well. Our photographer took us to the most picturesque spots on the Villas ground. From there, we had a vintage Italian boat pick us up from Villa Del Balbianello, and take us on a ride across the beautiful lake. Our captain took us in front of all of the notable locations around the lake to get the best photos. My mother, Jeanne Morile, and my aunt, Chantal Maurile, got to accompany me on this trip and served as creative directors and ‘hype women’ to help get our creative poses going. We had a great time and made lasting memories on the lake. FIRST DATE? For our first official date, we went mini-golfing and we had a great time.

even got to experience Iceland brief ly. It was only right that we decided on a destination wedding since we enjoy traveling the world together as a couple, and we wanted our loved ones to experience it as well. HOW HAS WEDDING PL ANNING BEEN? Initially, I thought wedding planning in Europe would be extremely difficult, but my wedding planner Brian Green is phenomenal. I tell him all that time that he is “worth every penny!” He is just that phenomenal. He goes out of his way to make things happen even when I am not sure that they can. When I told him about my dream to get married in Lake Como he did not hesitate, and he immediately said, “Let's do it!” He has kept me on track and I am so grateful for his guidance throughout this process. One of Rashad’s favorite hobbies is golfing, so mini-golfing was a great way to teach me a few of the things he has learned over the years. FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? Our favorite thing to do as a couple is travel. I have been traveling since I began college and it has always been a pastime we both enjoy. Rashad's first time in Europe was on our spring break during law school. We traveled to London, Spain, and

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ON YOUR WEDDING DAY? “I am looking forward to sharing my love for travel with my close friends and family. I am big on experiences and I love that my family and friends will have the opportunity to share this exciting time with me in another country.

Deborah+ Boluwatife PARIS, FRANCE

PHOTOGRAPHED BY Guillaume Gimenez Photographe WEDDING DATE: October, 2nd 2021 WEDDING LOCATION: France OCCUPATIONS: Pharmacists HOW THEY MET: We first met in 2011 when Deborah was visiting her aunt in the US for the first time. Her aunt was a family friend of Bolu’s mom and was living with them. So Deborah’s family ended up staying at Bolu's home for several weeks. At first glance, she was shy and a little intimidated because her Englishspeaking was limited but after a few days, we ended up talking and getting along well. At the end of her stay, we exchanged emails contacts and kept in touch as friends for several years. PROPOSAL STORY: It was during Christmas Holiday. Bolu came for a few days in France. Bolu knew this short trip of 7 days would be the one where he would propose. Since we already started planning the wedding, Bolu had to wait until the very last day in order to keep the surprise. He let Deborah’s family know that he would propose on that night. After dinner, Deborah prayed. At the end of the prayer and 50

before everyone opened their eyes, Deborah’s elder sister played one of our favorite songs. Bolu got on his knees and the rest is history ;). FIRST DATE? We actually never had a first date because we were started dating long distance. WHEN DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS “THE ONE”? As we were getting closer and closer over the years of being friends, we were getting more assurance that we were the one for each other. And God confirms it as we started our journey. THE THEME: It was such a wonderful experience. We never had shot together so it was really fun and Guillaume, our photographer, made this first time shooting an amazing experience. He knew how to guide us and what to tell us to make us comfortable. We didn’t have a theme but we wanted to showcase different outfits that represent us. FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE: Our favorite thing is to cook together. We love eating good food.

WE DDING IDE AS Set in the “Apple Capital of the World” this styled shoot is blooming with fairytale romance. PHOTOGRAPHED BY SVETL ANA SAUER PHOTOGRAPHY

60

NO. 25 | MARCH 2022

Inspiration behind the shoot by Svetlana Sauer Photography "Not far from the "Apple Capital of the World", is the small town of Manson. This quaint town is surrounded by acres of orchards, rolling hills, and beautiful Lake Chelan! Every spring, these orchards become filled with thousands of white blossoms, which inspired us to create a wedding vision based on this spring wonderland that is unique to North Central Washington! In collaboration with the Harmony Meadows wedding venue and a nearby private orchard, we were able to bring this vision to life! Everything from the invitations, to the florals, to the cake, to the wedding dress was based around the theme of "apple blossoms" and each vendor was asked to create something that would build on this vision in their own way. Katie, from Twisted Willow Floral, was even able to design a headpiece that coordinated perfectly with the bouquet and the protruding branches. To focus on the beauty of a blossoming apple orchard in full bloom, we actually set-up the ceremony site right in the center of the orchard. Cross-back vineyard chairs were provided by View Ridge Rentals to add an additional level of elegance and fairytale romance to the event! With the apple trees creating a natural arch, leading to the iron rod arbor, everything came together perfectly A dinner table was set-up in an adjacent orchard row with blush, velvet linens. Sometimes appearing heavy in the summer, these linens were perfect for this spring wedding inspiration! Salt & Honey Cooking provided charcuterie for the table, along with a custom cocktail, and a salad for the table. Bringing real food & drinks to a table setting helps create a realistic vision of what a spring wedding reception could really be like!"

NO. 25 | MARCH 2022

Inspiration behind the design by photographer/director Avonné Stalling of Avonné Photography "I’ve collected Vogue magazines since I was a child because I loved the elegant poses and stances that made these fashion designers so powerful and high-end. It was true art. The ’40s were a high fashion era, where women were very poised, elegant, and classy. That era inspired this shoot for me. I wanted to bring a touch of the 1940’s Vogue era into the modern-day wedding era. I looked online to gather inspiration for this shoot for the design aspect, and there were none, especially with African American people. So that fueled me all the more to really dig into a creative space and think of something no one has done before with elegant draping florals, and 40’s style hats and gloves, adding texture of the lace gloves to the silk of the dress and the velvety bow tie. It all worked together beautifully and become an art period piece of sorts, by showing African Americans in a different light, in a different era; While still, keeping up with the modern-day wedding.”

WE DDI NG I DE AS Putting a modern, artistic spin on a classic monochromatic design, this styled shoot integrates natural and industrial elements to create a unique expression of Black love. PHOTOGRAPHED BY ELL A MERRILL PHOTOGRAPHY

Inspiration behind the design by Lawrencia Bridal Couture With creamy whites and pearly natural highlights offset by charcoal and glassy black, the design was high-end, but not stifling. It complemented the art museum setting by acting as a blank canvas for the models and vendors to shine. Our florist and designer worked to weave natural elements, such as dried palm and pampas into the time-honored presence of white roses, airy baby’s breath, and light greenery present in the hanging structures, alternative arch, floral table runners, bud vases, and bridal bouquet.

64

NO. 25 | MARCH 2022

Utilizing the architecture of the art museum’s courtyard and entrance hall, we struck a balance of a cozy, intimate setting that still evoked the expansiveness and limitlessness we sought. The shoot was designed to bring Black love to life with elevated artistry, immaculate details, and distinctive textures. And with the twists and turns involved in the day’s planning, we experienced the enchantment and boundless joy of love and beauty being celebrated. Black love is like that - it’s elegant yet sassy, refined yet spontaneous. It lifts us all up.

WEDDING IDEAS

Inspiration behind the shoot by Creative Directors Élan House and Virginia and Co. The theme for the shoot was Lush Boho. When we began working through the styled shoot, we knew we wanted to do a boho-themed wedding. Often we see boho with neutral color palettes and traditional southwest designs. We wanted to take the Bohemian style and make it a maximalist. We wanted this to be the Afro-punk fest that marries Coachella with an explosion of color. Hence Lush Boho was born. The design's foundation was in the florals.

Inspiration behind the Shoot by Stylist and Photographer Ashley Noelle Edwards “A couples/engagement shoot inspired by the planet Saturn. We photographed this editorial at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles during the pandemic (so many of the areas were blocked off from access to us). Our goal was to be creative and design something we had never seen before! The gown has ribbon-wrapped detail that reminded me of Saturn's rings. Raven, our hair/makeup artist did glowing/sparkling makeup for our gorgeous Saturn bride model! We also had a bouquet made by Gold Dust Florals that includes galaxy anthurium and other celestial-inspired flowers. The ring borrowed from Trumpet & Horn matches the dress and is a very unique combination of shape and gemstone. I also included a jeweled bridal mask to add additional sparkle!

adelyn and Richard's love story began in a whirlwind of flirtatious chemistry and laughter with an undeniable connection.

By the end of their first dinner date in November 2019, the couple knew they had something special. So special, in fact, that Richard asked Nadelyn to be his girlfriend the same night! Over a year later in December 2020, Richard asked Nadelyn to marry him at the Rockefeller Center by the Christmas tree in New York City. Of course, she said yes! The couple celebrated their love with family and friends in a gorgeous wedding at the Chateau Grande Hotel in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Their timeless and romantic nuptials boasts beautiful florals, an extravagantly decorated venue, and so much love.

LAYAL + HUSSEIN ABUJA NIGERIA JUNE 25-26, 2021 P h o t o s b y B e d g e P i c t u re s Text by Angela Conner

S

ometimes a breakup provides the clarity you need to realize your partner really is the love of your life. Layal and Hussein started dating in 2015 and technically broke up twice, including ending their engagement in 2018. But fate had other plans. They realized they had a friendship and connection that they’ve never felt before, and Hussein was determined to give their relationship one more chance. Layal was in Tanzania vacationing with her mom, and to show his sincerity, Hussein flew to meet them at Addis Ababa airport. Tania shares, “It felt like we had never been separated, to begin with, and the whole roller coaster ride we took never existed. Everything happened so naturally and before you know It we tied the knot on June 25, 2021.” Their wedding was all about culture featuring four ceremonies! The first ceremony was the Fatiha/ Katb Kteb (directly translated from Arabic as “the Book Writing”), where a sheik married them in front of family and friends. The second ceremony was their Lebanese-themed wedding. Layal wore a gorgeous ball gown dress, and guests dined on Lebanese food and danced the night away to Arabic songs.

86

NO. 25 | MARCH 2022

The third ceremony was a Nigerian wedding. Layal shares, “So many people asked how come this specific theme was incorporated. Long story short, I was born and raised in Nigeria my whole life. I always said I was going to have a Nigerianthemed wedding even when I was back in school. Why did we go with Yoruba attire? Well, the lady I call my Nigerian mother is Yoruba, and wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.“ Finally, in their fourth ceremony, the couple had a destination ceremony where they flew to Zanzibar for their “white wedding”. Layal stunned again wearing two different dresses! With so many celebrations, it is hard for Layal to choose just one memorable moment, but her sister’s tribute stands out. “My sister sang at the Nigerian wedding,” Layal reminisces. “She literally rewrote her version of ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight,’ and I balled my eyes out at the wedding.”

First Dance Song: Lebanese wedding- “Nasseeni El Donya”- Ragheb Alama; Nigerian wedding was a mash-up of 3 songs - “When you tell me that you love me” & “Can’t help falling in love” Advice for brides: Enjoy the planning, take it easy, it all falls into place. But get a wedding planner! Before you know it, it takes months of planning and then the day itself goes by in just a few hours! Mushroom soup with truffle oil to burrata and ribeye steak down to the dessert and our amazing wedding cake. Each item was paired with the right wine to make it come together perfectly! And because it was a small wedding, we actually got to sit and eat with our guests and enjoy the amazing food. Favorite menu item: We both didn’t eat at any ceremony! We had food packed up for us to take home. Except for the shawarmas I snatched on my way out of the Lebanese ceremony (they were sooo good!)

ebecca and Theo’s wedding was truly a celebration of love and culture.

The college sweethearts got engaged in front of family and friends in the summer of 2018, almost 10 years after their first date! When they started wedding planning, they knew they had to find creative ways to honor their Haitian and Nigerian roots. Rebecca shares, “We were very intentional about the incorporation of culture in our wedding. Our outfits, as well as the outfits for our entire wedding party, spoke to the Nigerian cultural royalty. Also being of Haitian descent, we incorporated some elements from Haiti as well. Our favors were Kermes, a well-known Haitian liquor, traditionally given out at celebrations.” Their wedding decor mixed lush red roses with textured gold leaves and candelabras to create an ambiance of regal luxury. But most importantly, Rebecca and Theo’s wedding had an atmosphere of love and happiness. Rebecca reminisces, “The moment after our second entrance, right after changing into our second outfits, we felt an overwhelming amount of love as everyone came to the dancefloor to celebrate with us. The mix of music from both cultures played at the right time created this sense of joy and celebration that stayed with us long after the wedding.”

The bridesmaids had customized wine glasses with their names and titles, and custom mini wine bottles with labels asking them to be in our wedding. The groomsmen's gifts included custom cigars, custom shot glasses, and drinks. All the boxes also had picture collages of us with each of them. We also gifted them the fabric we purchased in Nigerian for their outfits. Ceremony entrance song: “You are the Reason” By Calum Scott First dance song: “True Love” By Yemi Alade

Alexis' remarkable testimony as to what occurred when her future husband walked by her left us breathless. While at a Nike store in college, she and Demetri crossed paths due to her persistent mother persuading her to go college shopping! The couple's full circle moment came when Demetri proposed in Las Vegas at a Nike store. The breathtaking location of their wedding would make any couple say yes to having a destination wedding. They were married on the picturesque Greek island of Santorini in the beautiful village of Megalochori, Greece. Immediately following their nuptials, family and friends joined the newlyweds and their children at a romantic candle-lit family-style dinner under a centuries-old windmill overlooking the Aegean Sea. While the entire day was memorable, Alexis shares, “Our first dance with the fireworks was one of my favorite moments. The fireworks added a wow factor to such an intimate moment.” On incorporating culture... "We included the Stefana Greek tradition. The Stefana are wedding crowns that are placed on both bride and groom and symbolize the beginning of a union." - Alexis Other details... "Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our original photographer could no longer make it. I hired Jao Photography about a month before our wedding. So thankful he was able to squeeze us into his busy schedule. Our entire wedding loved him. He has such a vibrant personality and is a pleasure to have captured our wedding day!" - Alexis MUNALUCHI BRIDE

o you believe in fate?

James knew Jara was “the one” when they first met while waiting for an elevator at a teen conference. Their spontaneous meeting sparked an undeniable connection; however, their love story didn’t quite start there. College and new jobs soon took them to different states and places around the globe. They left lines of communication open, messaging each other sporadically over the years, but they never seemed to be in the same place at the same time. Then, one day, fate intervened. Jara realized she’d be working in DC for a month at Howard University Hospital and she let James know she’d be in the area. Of course, he was thrilled to possibly see Jara again! In the fall of 2016, they finally reconnected - and the rest is history! As they celebrate their love today, James speaks lovingly of his wife, saying: “A life partner is exactly what you want because marriage is a partnership and you want your teammate to be the perfect match; one you can love, respect, and build with. Jara is exactly that, “My Queen”.

Best advice... One of my patients told me about the week before my wedding that many things may not go as planned, but nothing can go wrong. Wedding planning, especially during covid, can be incredibly stressful and full of unexpected challenges. Try to have patience with those on your team and try to be flexible when possible. You may fall in love with one design plan and then find you must change venues, or photographers, or even your wedding date. In the end, each change is part of a greater plan and every stressful moment pales in comparison to the joy of the day you say, “I do.”

amantha and Carl first met in 2012 when they were both coworkers, but their love story didn’t begin until after one of them left the company. During their time working together, a coworker of theirs suggested to Carl that he and Samantha would be great together. The couple shares, “Carl disagreed saying, ‘she’s too spoiled and bougie for me’. Samantha also disagreed simply saying ‘I’m not interested’.” Despite being seemingly disinterested, only a couple of days after leaving the company, Carl asked Samantha out to dinner and then for a second date, beginning their love story and journey to forever. The night before Carl proposed, Samantha and him got into an argument, which left Samantha not in the best of moods so Carl asked Samantha out to dinner to talk. Samantha, not expecting anything out of the ordinary, was taken by surprise when Carl got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She couldn’t have been happier, and of course she said “yes!”. Their luxurious and modern wedding in Houston, Texas featured caramel and nude tones along with red, peach, pink, and mauve flowers with pampas grass, adding to the romantic atmosphere of their magical evening. Samantha shares, “The energy was undeniable, it was so much positive energy and love.”

For Lamar and Simone, they used their last name, Boyd, to create the hashtag #BlackBoydJoy. He was consistent from the beginning. I knew he was the one for me when I couldn’t go a day without hearing his voice…”Tania Whew, Alix and Tania’s story reads like an intoxicating romance novel. The couple, who met in band camp when they were 13 years old, has a love built on lasting friendship and faith. Their spiritual connection drove their desire to get married, and their wedding has nothing short of spectacular. Think Purple Rain- lush purple decor and cascading violet orchids enveloped guests in their extravagant reception, which included a first dance featuring dazzling sparklers. To represent their Haitian culture, Tania shares, “We had Kremas (a Haitian drink), which is a staple at Haitian weddings and we had Haiti’s flag for all our guests to rep while we danced the night away.” It was the perfect reflection of their style and love.

hen the pandemic halted Laurie and Damon’s original plans to have an intimate wedding in Florida, they had to regroup. They knew they would have to have the wedding closer to home, but could they pull off having a wedding in their backyard in Chicago? After investing in some backyard renovations, the answer was absolutely yes! Laurie shares, “Damon created a beautiful waterfall as our ceremony backdrop along with a deck for elevation, and he also created a pergola lounge space to add to the vibe we wanted to present during the reception. I, myself designed the decor and branding and we basically worked together as one to create the wedding we both wanted.” Laurie’s sister acted as the coordinator, and the wedding went off without a hitch. Guests came wearing their best all-white attire and enjoyed a familystyle vegan soul food dinner. Laurie, who is a bridal gown designer, wore two looks- a high fashion black ballgown, and a fun and flirty white dress. Not to be outdone, Damon also made a statement in his floral print jacket. The night ended with dancing and fireworks! The Rusell’s wedding proves that with creativity and proper planning you can have the wedding of your dreams- even in your own backyard.

This eventually led to our first date and years later our marriage.” Darnell shocked Kori by proposing during their house warming game night in the presence of close friends. The sweet proposal rendered Kori speechless and is remembered as one of the best moments of her life. Featuring an abundance of red roses, candles, and gold accents, their modern, yet classic wedding overflowed with rich red romance. Kori put energy into every detail so that their wedding would perfectly reflect them and their love. Their loved one’s support and positivity made the night that much more special and memorable.

had & Jahira were one of four couples who won and participated in our "Romance Blooms in Brooklyn" Muna Serenade! They were first introduced through mutual friends and have since formed a loving relationship and now a beautiful marriage. Chad planned a creative and romantic proposal that was perfectly executed during a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. “I was born and raised in Brooklyn but have never walked over the bridge until that day, it was the perfect NYC engagement.” When they got to the other side, Chad further surprised Jahira by planning an engagement party with their family and friends. Jahira and Chad held their modern-chic wedding at The Queens Museum on Juneteenth of 2021. Bride Jahira shares, “We were intentional about picking that date because it is a reminder of the love, resilience, and endurance we’ll need to sustain our Black love.” They enjoyed celebrating their marriage and culture with loved ones as they crossed over another bridge together, this time as husband and wife.

Before Denise met her King, Alex, she was hesitant to be set-up by her friend and go on their first date due to negative past experiences. She eventually agreed, unaware that she’d be meeting her future hubby. Denise shares, “We had really good conversations and Alex had a very calm demeanor.” Alex proposed during the height of the pandemic during a day trip to the beach. Similarly with their first date, Denise wasn’t immediately interested in the idea of going, but eventually after some convincing, she agreed. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get the perfect proposal spot, Alex popped the question while they were sitting on the trunk of their car just before going home. “He stepped back and looked me in my eyes and said “no, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?” and pulled out the ring. I immediately started balling…” For their wedding, Denise and Alex celebrated with a charming outdoor garden-boho micro wedding, complete with a beautiful and delicious brunch! “I literally loved everything about our wedding. It was the most perfect day.”

any people are hesitant to try online dating. Lorenzo and Angela were also skeptical when their friends encouraged them to sign up for the dating app “Coffee Meets Bagel”, but sometimes friends know best. When they stumbled across each other’s profile, the physical attraction was instant, but Lorenzo was particularly captured by how down-to-earth yet confident Angela appeared in her profile introduction. They started chatting through the app and eventually exchanged numbers. Their chemistry was undeniable and within a week, Lorenzo was determined to meet Angela in person. Luckily, the connection they felt over the phone was confirmed on their first date. From there, “like” turned into “love” and a strong foundation was formed. A little over a year later, Lorenzo proposed during a celebration for Angela’s birthday. He made dinner reservations at the restaurant where he asked her to be his girlfriend. Lorenzo escorted her to the terrace to see this “new building” that had been built. When Angela struggled to find it, Lorenzo revealed the real reason they were there, got down on one knee, and asked her to be his wife. After dinner, Lorenzo led Angela upstairs. When she turned the corner, more than 50 friends and family members screamed, “surprise!” catching her completely off guard. Tears were flowing, hugs were given and smiles never left their faces. The couple was scheduled to have a big wedding in September of 2020, but they canceled because of the pandemic. Instead, they had a micro wedding at the National Mall in Washington DC on September 18, 2020. Then, they had a full wedding and reception with 350 of their family members and friends on their one-year anniversary, which was Saturday, September 18, 2021. It was fabulosity personified from Angela’s “Sex in the City” inspired wedding dress, to their regal white and blush florals, and royal blue and gold decor!

event in Houston, Texas. The bride’s glamorous dream dress featured a custom train and veil with all whitehued stones including pearls which coordinated with Jonathan's handmade formal white tuxedo with tails from suit designer Don Morphy.

Even though the bride and groom have two separate versions of how they initially met in college, they agree that they reconnected on Facebook and after a week said yes to each other by going out on their very first date.

Their ceremony and reception was a fantastic mix of the couple’s tastes which was topped off with a luxe 7 tiered sugar flower wedding cake. Veronica and Jonathan emphasized for other couples, “... figure out what’s important to you both and if something is a dealbreaker for your spouse but you don’t really care one way or the other, then let them choose that.”

Veronica’s other yes moment came when she chose her customized gown by designer Ese Azenabor who personally sketched the bride's gown at a popup dress

auren and Jon’s whirlwind romance started when they met on the dating app Bumble. Jon, proposed during a romantic trip to Paris, and two years later they were married in a breathtaking outdoor wedding in Texas. It was full of rustic, minimalist decor, stunning scenic views and gorgeous greenery. Lauren looked angelic in her two wedding dresses- a ballgown for the ceremony and a form fitting dress for the reception. However, the best part of the wedding according to Lauren was, “Getting to see my family and friends after not seeing anyone due to the pandemic.”

elissa and Guy’s wedding in 2006 was a bold and timeless morning affair. Now, 15 years later, they commemorated their beautiful union with a gorgeous photo shoot. Melissa reminisces, “I feel that 15 years is a small but big accomplishment at the same time. Small because I can't wait for our 25th, big because we were very young and by the grace of God are still standing.” Their stunning outdoor anniversary shoot gorgeously showcased Melissa and Guy's sophisticated and elegant style with their formal black and white attire. The couple, who both own a multimedia company in Florida and Haiti, believe in supporting and uplifting one another in a thriving marriage. “It is important to support each other's dreams and encourage each other. When did you get married and where? 6/24/2006 in Pompano Beach Florida

diva, Alyssa our quiet and studious 8-year-old and Guyelle our 5-year-old boss baby.

What was your wedding like? We had a sweet summer wedding with pretty shades of purple. Our guest count was at 232 so we opt out for a morning wedding in the hopes that we would receive less RSVPS. Morning weddings are not common in the Haitian culture. little did we know that everyone would still attend. It was beautiful day with our families, church friends and work colleagues.

When it comes to careers, what do both of you do and how do you make time for each other? We are both creatives. I'm an Event Planner and Designer. Together, we own Finest Planning and Decor Designing. He is a film producer and together we own a multimedia company in Florida and In Haiti. With our busy schedules, we create the time to be together. It's a lot of scheduling nowadays and rescheduling but we make sure to make it happen.

As you celebrate your anniversary, what do you remember most about your wedding day? Most memorable moment has to be seeing Guy down the aisle waiting on me with tears down his face. Was there anything you would have done differently for your wedding? I would have set a floral budget. I was oblivious to the overall cost of a wedding so setting a floral budget was far from being thought of. What are your favorite things to do as a couple? We love going out to dinner and trying different cuisine. Who cooks? I'm the cook but my husband makes the best eggs and oatmeal according to the kids Do you have any children or pets? We have 3 little ones: Emonie, our 10-year-old

What would you say are the most important elements for a successful marriage? A successful marriage can not be one side. Both parties have to be willing to make it work. I truly believe a marriage have to have a great foundation and for us that's God. Both people have to be willing to compromise on certain things. Mutual respect is very important. How do you keep the spark in your marriage? Cute little unexpected surprises and even through the hectic schedules just a quick meet at a Cafe for a quick bite together. Tell us about the shoot. What inspired it? I feel that 15 years is a small but big accomplishment at the same time. Small because I can't wait for our 25th, big because we were very young and by the grace of God are still standing. Our looks were designed to be bold and timeless which is a representation of our enduring life together.

essyca and Ahmad were originally planning to have 250 guests come to New Orleans

to celebrate their union in March of 2021, but of course, COVID-19 altered their plans. In order to keep their original wedding date, the couple decided to downsize their wedding to 10 guests and had a beautiful sunset ceremony at Jessycas' aunt's home overlooking the Bayou St. John. Everything was perfect, and the energy was moving and captivating. Jessyca shared “After the officiant officially announced us as husband and wife, we heard faint shouting from a distance. I couldn't believe they thought enough of us to watch our ceremony from afar, across the bayou. My heart was so full!” It may not have been what they imagined a year ago, but it was exactly what they needed.

vendors What were you initially planning for your wedding, and how did COVID-19 affect your wedding plans? We were initially planning to have 250 of our closest friends and family come celebrate our union in March 2021 but of course, COVID-19 changed all of that. We kept downsizing the list to be in compliance with the current/local COVID guidelines but it became too stressful. In early January 2021, we made the hard decision to postpone our bigger wedding celebration to the same time in 2022. More than anything, we still wanted to get married on our original date so we started planning our private, micro ceremony to solidify our commitment to each other. What is your best memory from your wedding? My aunt and uncle attended our wedding ceremony as surprise guests from across the bayou! We kept our guest list to a very small number to keep everyone safe but that didn't stop my family from finding creative ways to still be a part of our special day. We got married in our aunt's backyard which sits along Bayou St. John. After the officiant officially announced us as husband and wife, we heard faint shouting from a distance. I couldn't believe they thought enough of us to watch our ceremony from afar, across the bayou. My heart was so full! 132

ana & Kearn decided to promise their love in front of a small gathering of loved ones at

their intimate garden wedding. Dana shares, “We opted for a small, intimate garden ceremony due to COVID and travel restrictions. Our style was elegant, romantic, and warm.” The ceremony was a beautiful reflection of their multicultural union. Dana is Lebanese and Muslim and Kearn is from Trinidad and is Catholic. During their ceremony, the couple had their mothers read from the Bible and Quran in both English and Arabic. Dana reminisces “Our officiant incorporated both our cultures and families' beliefs into his readings, along with a symbolic ceremony. It was beautiful.” The intimate nature of their affair reminded the Matthews of what weddings are all about, “It's easy to get caught up in the wedding planning details and let that stress you out, but at the end of the day it's not what matters,” they shared. “Marriage is about the union between two souls who love one another. uan and Katrina got engaged in November of 2020 and decided within two days that they wanted a destination wedding in Mexico. With 36 guests attending, they exchanged vows in a gazebo, on a cliff overlooking the breathtaking Gulf of Mexico. The entire vibe of their wedding was enchanting from the private cocktail hour featuring a Spanish guitar player to the candlelit-inspired pool reception. Katrina shares, “The reception was so much fun. I hired my hometown DJ and some of my guests jumped in the pool with their clothes on. We had 36 guests in total in Mexico and it was such an intimate experience. Whether 300 people show up or 5 – the day will be amazing, and you will feel loved.”

Why was it important to have an intimate destination wedding? We were being thoughtful about keeping the pandemic at bay – minimizing the potential of those who could get sick. And we wanted our special moment to be sacred with the intentionality of sharing a once-ina-lifetime moment with our closest family and friends. The journey of getting married and traveling during a pandemic presented so many challenges so to be able to have a beautiful wedding on the originally planned date – was a magical experience.
