t’s time to remember the joy of coming together to support one another, and the power that comes when women unite and pool their skills, knowledge and resources together. So much good is brought to the world when we do.

For so long, we have been lost in a place of separation, competition and comparing with each other, where women would try and tear each other down. We can see how this has eroded not only our lives but also our society.

Women are the glue of this world, and it has been slowly falling apart due to women isolating themselves, fearing other

women, and fearing themselves.

We have a choice to unite, to come together with the same intention and purpose of creating a better life, business and world for our children, family, friends and ourselves.

We have the power to change the way we interact with one another, to learn to love other women as we re-learn to love ourselves.

I AM BEAUTIFULLY FLAWED. I CAN SAY THAT WITH CONFIDENCE NOW, BUT IT WASN’T EASY COMING TO THIS REALISATION.

B

eing able to truly embrace oneself in a society where acceptance is based around status, race, religion, culture, wealth, and so many other perceived factors, it was never going to be easy. I have learnt to hear, acknowledge, thank and ignore the inner voice that tells me “I’m not enough”. I am perfectly imperfect, and more than enough, just the way I am. Mentors and true friends support and lift me up so I can internally help lift myself, and this is likewise my passion for empowering others, especially women. Because when women unite, it’s magic, and when a community of women come together, the power of unity is created.

As a mum, I strive daily to be a role model for my children by living and teaching equality and equity. It is important to me that they have a good sense and acceptance of self and others around them. The big wide world awaits them, and I want them to be prepared with as many tools in their toolbelt as possible, and the greater understanding of love and support for one another.

While this is part of the home, my professional world as a life and business coach, sees similar struggles, just on a grander scale. I

work mainly with women who are challenged with low self-worth and belonging. I help them understand that they too are enough and to unify their understanding that regardless of how different they feel to others around them, that they also are worthy and have a special place in society.

What I’ve learnt along my journey is that I’ve caused trouble and conflict internally and externally, I have had moments where I have shut down and sacrificed my authentic voice, but in the end, ‘me being me’ is the only thing I am perfect at. And who

is society to shape me to believe I should be any different? I’ve never been one to stick by the rules or stay in my lane. I am often outspoken and passionate and will defend myself and my loved ones with gusto. And that is ok.

Like myself, I want my clients to know and accept their unique differences, and to honestly know they are like a magical power.

Inner self-confidence comes from likeminded and supportive people; people who will listen and hear your story and lean in to hear more; to accept you for being you and not try to squeeze the round ‘you’ into a square box.

While working as a Life and Business Coach allows me to help empower women, I began thinking of how many of my clients felt isolated before having someone help build them up. Not everyone has access to a great listening friend, non-judgemental colleague or professional such as myself and living in a rural country town this resonated with me.

Even though I work in the role that I do, I know what isolation and not fitting into the mould is. I looked around at the collectives in my region – groups for mums,

businesswomen, leaders, cake bakers, dancers and more. But what about those women that don’t fit into just one or any group at all? I knew there would be other women in my rural community that would want to steer from the curve of isolation and self-doubt. They were women, who were looking for something new, who likewise were wanting to embrace learning, growth, support, story sharing, leaning in to and on one another through similarities and differences.

Genevieve De Santis and I saw our vision of bringing a collective of women together from all walks of life, and any age or stage of life, come alive. This collective became the WiNE (Women in North East) Network - a community of women that Empowers, Inspires, Educations, Nurtures, and Connects women without the fear of judgement

and exclusion. The WiNE Network produces a variety of events that you can pick and choose whatever suits your wants and needs, whether you are a socialite, introvert, stay at home or a working mum, feel comfortable/ uncomfortable in a group, love/loathe being on-camera or speaking out loud, live with challenges or mental illness or more, everyone is welcome, included and supported.

My role as a mum, Life and Business Coach and one part of the WiNE Network is to keep helping women understand that they are more than enough just as they are, and to embrace the differences to unite women and make pure magic happen.

oney is the easiest thing in the world to get. You sell something somebody wants, in exchange for money. There is a virtually endless supply of it out there.

Here’s where it gets complicated - all our underlying beliefs about money.

The very first interaction you had with money was fear. Every toddler wants to eat coins, and then we get yelled out “Don’t put that in your mouth, money is DIRTY”.

Then we’re told, “money doesn’t grow on trees!” when we express desires. We’re told it’s better to give than receive. We’re shown that rich people are greedy, selfish, and wear impractical fancy clothes.

HOW TO BE #BREASTAWARE 1. CHECK: Know your body, check your breasts and the area around them regularly, ideally monthly from age 16. Breast changes might be seen or felt and can include (but are not limited to): • Lumps: in the breast tissue, in the arm pits or around the collar bones, may be tender, painfree, round, flat, irregular, rough, smooth, stuck in place or movable.

• Skin changes: redness, rash, heat, thickening, dimpling, puckering/pulling on movement, including skin around the breasts and in the arm pits.

• Nipple changes: crusting, bleeding or discharge from the nipple, finding the nipple is pulling inward (retracting) over time.

• Others: changes in breast size or shape, persistent pain in the breast or armpit, even without other changes.

2. DETECT: If you find a change, book in with a GP as early as possible to get a referral for imaging. Imaging is especially vital if you think the change might have been there for more than 4 weeks.

3. FOLLOW UP: If your imaging is clear, great! But make a plan with your doctor to follow up the change you presented with, and return earlier if you notice further changes.

4. FAMILY: Find out about your family history of breast and ovarian cancer.

Talk to your GP about when YOU should start breast screening based on this history, considering MRI and family cancer clinic care are options if you have increased risk.

o, when Amy Walker and Jaimie McMillan, two boss-babes on their small business journey in regional Queensland Australia, serendipitously connected, their spirits and vision aligned – and Creating Stories, a little workshop project, was born.

Can we create the community

DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN WOMEN WOULD GET TOGETHER, WHILST THE CHILDREN PLAYED AND “CHORES” STILL GOT DONE?

S

pecifically, those early days with a newborn, where the support of another mother who gets it - especially one with older children - was so

helpful to the mind, body and soul.

I am one of the lucky ones that do remember this, as I grew up in a culture where my grandmother, my aunts and others in our village were an integral part of my upbringing.

Sadly, when I became a mother, this was not my experience. I want to make it clear that it was no fault of anyone. It was a mixture of the system/society and the judgement that mothers can have for each other.

The Australian maternal care system tries hard to create this support through a mother’s group. I know this has been successful for some mums who years after their children have grown up, are still connected.

However, I know for many, this is not the case. For me, it personally brought a lot of shame and inferiority with it as I never fitted into the group I was allocated.

I don’t hide the fact that I went through an awful bout of post-natal anxiety and received judgement and criticism from the group. Most days, I was trying to survive to then only feel judgement for not having a child who played a certain way or slept through the night, which added to my feelings of inadequacy.

If we can recognise this divinity in women, we truly can make the world a better place for all humans. I know this to be possible because I have arrived at this place with my second child.

Whilst the village I dream of is yet to come into full manifestation of the vision I have, I am close to it. The little things each one of us can do to support one another can be as simple as helping a Mumma out in public whose hands are full with her baby and groceries. You can make a meal for another or just step in and give a mother time to herself whilst her child is being looked after. All done with no judgement but pure heart and understanding.

Sadly, the only criteria the maternal nurses need before they lump us with a bunch of other women is the fact that we all had a baby at similar times.

However, this may create further isolation because other than the factor of being a new mum, there are no other common grounds for these mothers to connect.

The pressures on mothers are endless - to be, feel and do things in certain ways and then judged by the expected milestones our children do or do not attain.

Imagine a space where women are encouraged to tap into their innate wisdom, knowledge and power to pass to

The Reform Of The

WE ARE AT A TIPPING POINT, CROSS-POLLINATION OF HOW WE SERVE AND RUN OUR BUSINESSES.

A

s a womxn in business, we are craving a serious reform because the traditional business model is not conducive to how we want to live and run our businesses.

The yearning for us to be a Mumpreneur is the fusion of our desire to raise our children and model to them that we can have it all. We can redefine societal conditioning of a working Mum in the 9 to 5. It required us to lean into our

entrepreneurial mindset whereby anything is possible.

Only it’s not always that easy.

Creating a business that works for us means sometimes working around the clock, trial and error, and a mix of passion and perseverance.

That can be exhausting, and it isn’t sustainable. We no longer have the conversations with friends in the lunchroom that banter and support with workmates. Sharing online about our vulnerabilities is hard because we need the level of professionalism, and we have to have our shit together.

Usually, we are still running the household, running around after our kids as well as doing everything in our business from serving to creating content, to marketing to the books.

The evolution of the Solopreneur and Mumpreneur is in dire need of reform!

Preempting The Arrival.

I purpose we start to celebrate and preempt this reform as we begin to imagine what this reform might look like?

Our indigenous doesn’t do a rain dance when the rain arrives; they dance to celebrate its arrival before it rains!

Right now there is a win-lose game for people’s attention (our potential clients) and our attention is finite.

Time is not our most precious commodity; our attention to it is.

The keyword there is Be, what if we celebrated this reform as soon as we create it in our mind’s eye and our journal’s?

This cross-pollination is about redefining how we show up in business and deepen our network… The keyword there is “deepen” and not expand. (Though we welcome that as well.)

When people can disagree (and do it well) that actually creates more unity.

rom the beginning of the year, we have had extreme events, one after another.

That, above all else, have created great divide and conflict between us, between friends, between loved ones, between families and between strangers.

There is the one thing that is extremely clear amongst all the chaos in the world; I wonder, can you see it or feel it too?

It has added even more stress, hardship and fear for our collective consciousness, our mental health and wellbeing.

When we can differ in our thoughts and perspectives, without ‘vilifying’ the other; without disrespecting, dishonouring, and demeaning another, then we will discover our unity and togetherness. And only then will we truly see ‘we are all in this together’.

If we feel we hold a right to belittle another human being for differing in point of view, then we are losing what makes us human; we are losing our sense of morality…Yes? The same morality that teaches our children to feel safe to have their voice heard in the classroom, that teaches them to build their self-confidence in allowing themselves to be who they are; unique, different, warts and all.

This teaches our children to accept themselves and inturn allow, respect and accept others. #AntiBulllying It’s the same morality that stands against violence against women and domestic violence.

It’s the morality that says, I am not at liberty to attack, abuse and control you for expressing yourself, for being you.

I am not at liberty to have power over you or silence you, with my words, my actions, my ‘superior intellect’ or my strength, simply because I don’t like what you are saying or doing.

That means “You deserve what you get - because you said or did this” (You spoke out of term.) Respect Is Respect. Call it out, call it out all the time!

Despite what differences we feel or think. We are all in this together, we are in life together, we are on this planet together, and we are all striving for the same thing.

International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month LOSING A CHILD DURING PREGNANCY OR INFANCY WOUNDS A PARENT TO THE CORE. WHETHER IT’S A MISCARRIAGE, STILLBIRTH, OR SIDS, THE LOSS OF SUCH A NEW LIFE IS DEVASTING.

ecause women can carry a child within their womb, their experience with such losses affects them in an entirely different way. This is not to discount the grief of husbands and fathers, but to acknowledge the unique challenges and emotions of a mother reeling from the loss.

October is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Month. More specifically, 15 October is World Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. At 7 pm local time, consider lighting a candle to participate in the International Wave of Light, to commemorate those young lives gone too soon.

The Star Legacy Foundation created the #NeverBeStill campaign to bring

awareness to infant and pregnancy loss. Too many women suffer silently. Perhaps the only thing worse than suffering such wounds is having to endure it alone. You are not alone.

Whether you yourself are a bereaved parent or you are looking to support those who are, let’s take a look at some of the ways we can stand in solidarity with those grieving families.

platforms, and ideas for contacting elected officials.

More than just raising awareness, #NeverBeStill aims to promote healthy pregnancies and births. As the foundation empathetically states, “every pregnancy deserves a happy ending!” There is still much to be learned about prenatal conditions and factors attributing to SIDS. It is only with research and education that we can combat such forces-and ultimately prevent them from happening.

If you have been impacted by pregnancy or infancy loss, know that you are not alone. October is the month to acknowledge your grief. Let your grief motivate you to support change. Women-- all across the world-- deserve only the best prenatal and postpartum care. Whether it’s raising awareness, funds, or both, it’s time to combine forces until we fully understand these potentially preventable conditions.

EMBRACING A DIFFERENT

LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS PAN OUT HOW YOU IMAGINED IT WOULD. WHEN OUR TWIN ‘SURPRISES’ WERE BORN AT 24 WEEKS PREGNANT, LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THIS WOULD BE THE START OF A JOURNEY THAT WOULD DESTROY MY ENTIRE BEING.

W

suffer from severe anxiety and PTSD, needing medication to lead a normal life, I threw everything into the business and being a mother that I forgot who I was.

It’s been almost five years since those events, and only four months ago that my life changed completely.

I saw a shining light in that neverending pit of darkness. Due to COVID-19, our three month trip around the world was cancelled, our business had been set up to run itself while we were away, we pulled Oskar out of daycare to self-quarantine due to his previous lung issues, and I thought, ‘maybe this means I have time to do something for me?’

My husband was excited to be a stay at home dad, so I wrote three children’s books for Oskar in a week.

I found an illustrator the following week, and the next month I found Ocean Reeve Publishing and here I am, in a completely different world. I am now a full-time author!

e sadly lost one of our little boys Oli 8 days later and spent a total of 133 days in the NICU getting Oskar well enough to come home.

When you lose a child, it breaks you.

I was never the same person again.

We tried for another baby, and after two miscarriages, we decided it just wasn’t meant to be. I still miss my little boy so much. I also miss the old me, so carefree, so happy, travelling the world in my dream job, it was an amazing life.

Sliding into the black hole of depression was easy. When the adrenaline of the hospital journey wore off, the grief of losing Oli, being home with a sick child on oxygen, as well as the fear of losing him too, it was just too much and to add on top of it all I was building a business from scratch which was our only source of income...

I plummeted deep into darkness.

I used to think depression was a joke, that people were faking it. I can assure you that I was wrong. I now MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

I am creating a legacy for Oskar and Oli through my love of writing and creative expression. The books are dedicated to the loving memory of Oli, and the proceeds will be used to raise awareness about infant loss, supporting bereaved families through the Precious Wings and RBWH (Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital) Foundations. I want to bring PTSD and infant loss to the surface, it’s a subject that just isn’t talked about and way too many families experience it. This is now my purpose.

Facing my demons has been very challenging, every day is a new emotion to navigate, but I am getting there slowly.

There is no time frame for finding the light. I want to tell you that there are people in that black hole with you, who love you, even though you can’t see them in the darkness. Be kind to yourself. Find your reason, your purpose, and use your experience to help others. The more you help others heal, the more you will heal.

Kelly Maree settled back in Brisbane, Australia with her husband after ten years of ravelling around the world, working as a diving instructor and photographer.

Life was turned upside down when one of their twins passed away after being born prematurely.

Now an author, Kelly Maree, has dedicated all of her books to the loving memory of Oli all the little angels that didn’t make it. A percentage of the book’s sales is donated to the RBWH and Precious Wings Foundations to help support bereaved families and premature babies, making this project personal for Kelly.

With her ever-growing love for her little boy, Kelly decided to create a legacy for Oskar and Oli, and Oskar’s Adventures was born. Her passion for writing and creating poetic adventures for children to enjoy is apparent from the first few pages of any of her three books.

The first three books of Oskar’s Adventures are Oskar and the Bear, Oskar and the Moon Rocks and Oskar and the Storm are due for release in November 2020.

espite 1 in 4 pregnancies ending in loss before 12 weeks [1], in 2015, there was no support specific to early pregnancy loss or miscarriage available in Australia.

Like the elephants who hold space to support a grieving mother, we understand the importance of creating safe spaces.

It started with the words, “I’m sorry there is no heartbeat” at

a routine scan in August 2015.

We had lost our baby.

“I’ve lost three much wanted and loved babies to miscarriage, each one has been a different type of loss but each one I have grieved and felt all of the feelings that come along with pregnancy loss. What really hurt me was the lack of support and even acknowledgment by others that I had lost a baby despite it being common people don’t know how to even talk about it, to me they are my babies I have lost. You don’t just get over it, and there is no at least it happened

After all, if 1 in 4 pregnancies ended in loss before 12 weeks, surely she couldn’t be the only one looking for support. It turns out she wasn’t;

thankfully Sam was abel to translate her vision and engage others to build The Pink Elephants. Collaboratively they began with research and developed an actionable strategy to bring to life this amazing community and advocacy network to be there for all of those impacted by early pregnancy loss.

Their achievements in the last five years are a testament to not just all of their hard work, drive, and determination but the clear need for such a support service as Pink Elephants. Women have been crying out for an advocacy network to champion the change necessary across communities and to RIGHT the story of early pregnancy loss, once and for all.

So much of the experience around early pregnancy loss is driven by outdated perceptions and mistruths — whether you’re directly affected by it, a friend unsure how to help, or a healthcare professional just trying to make a difference. y fiancé and I had just moved to a new city, a whole new area 6 hours away from our home town and 2 hours from the nearest relative. It was awesome! My birthday was the week before, and I was 21, little did I know that two weeks after moving we fell pregnant. I was over the moon, and so was my now Husband.

We did it even though I have endometriosis so was taken

by surprise, I was both excited and scary at the same time.

When we went for our scan, we found out it was TWINS! We ended up having two healthy babies seven and a half months later, as they were eight weeks and five days early when we welcomed Logan and Ali-Jane to the world.

A girl and boy, our family was complete in one go, so we thought. Unfortunately, our baby boy ended up with sepsis due to an infection, and this

was inoperable, it was the most challenging time of our lives. We were told we would have to turn his life support off as he wouldn’t be able to have a normal life. Deciding to keep one baby, and not the other was not how we wanted this to happen.

Our family came to be with us and were amazingly supportive. The nurses and doctors were also very helpful during this time; though, there wasn’t much support for us apart from our family and medical team. We couldn’t find support groups or people to talk to without feeling judged or pitied; we just wanted an open space to talk and express our feelings without making other people feel bad. Now we know there are resources around that can help parents like my partner and I, who I highly recommend reaching out to. However, even with the support, it was still hard.

behind and bring home another. We always felt triggered when we saw other babies and being terrified of anything happening to Ali and this became our everyday life.

Anxiety attacks, panic attacks and depression followed us around everywhere we went.

So I reached out to my doctor and got a mental health care plan. I also started EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress.

It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) to help process the memories of Logan, the good and bad that

kept coming back. I still miss him so much; we all do.

Two years on and our baby girl is healthy, has an attitude like her Mumma and Daddy, and she is the most precious thing on earth to us. I have shared my story and used that for motivation to start personal training and specialising in women’s physical and mental health. I use Logan to motivate me every day by reminding myself that he would be proud of me and what I am doing, I use Ali to remind me that I have something amazing and precious still here, so I need to keep going.

After going through what we did, I don’t want any parents to have to go through that

alone ever again. It only takes picking up a phone to get help if you need it.

How I found my

grace in grief,

and magic

in the tragic?

IT WAS 9 PM ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. MY BEST FRIEND MESSAGED ME (SHE WORKED AT MY OBSTETRICIANS OFFICE) “THE RESULTS ARE IN, SEE IF YOU CAN GET INTO A GP TONIGHT”.

I

was able to get into a late-night GP. As I sat in the waiting room, I repeated over and over to myself “Amelia Jade Mcleod Hansen”.

This was my baby girl’s name.

I had known about her for eight years when she first appeared to

me in a dream. I always knew she was coming in every part of my Soul. Since that dream, I had been gifted three beautiful boys and had 2 miscarriages. A couple of months earlier, Amelia had let me know that it was now her time to come. I told

my husband, and he knew to follow my intuition, the next cycle I fell pregnant.

Ten weeks later, after what felt like a year-long 20-minute wait, the doctor called me in to receive my NIPT blood test result. I sat nervously and told her how important this news was. I asked her to print the piece of paper and put it in an envelope, so I could take it home to share the news with my husband. I had packed a little box with a pink onesie saying “Daddy’s princess” in the car because I knew what the result would be. I also knew that I wouldn’t wait to open the envelope with him.

My hands were trembling as I pulled out the piece of paper, time stood still. Tears ran down my face as I read the words “female” and no detected abnormalities.

Fast forward six months, and we were finally on the way to the hospital, in very active labour, ready to meet this Soul we had waited so long for.

There was a stillness, an eerie sense of knowing that our world was about to change.

We pulled up and rushed into the Pregnancy Assessment Unit. As we were taken into the consult room, I was contracting with only 10-30 seconds break in between as the midwife tried to get the doppler on while I was standing. It was proving difficult, so she asked me to lay down.

I was fully focused on contractions and creating the most peaceful and calm birth, and not at all on the midwife trying to get a good heartbeat on the doppler.

After a few minutes, she called over her pager for a doctor to come in with an ultrasound. Minutes later, a registrar arrived. The scanner was facing away from me, towards the other faces in the room (my husband, the midwife and the doctor.) As they all stared poker-faced at the screen, I continued to breathe through contractions.

The doctor said, “I’m going to call a more senior doctor in to have a look”. Seconds later, another doctor appeared. It was only then, with four poker faces staring at the screen, I suddenly realised something wasn’t right. I demanded, “What is going on”.

This is the moment that changed my life forever. “I’m so sorry darling; she’s gone”. “WHAT. DO. YOU. MEAN? She’s right there. Look at my belly, she’s right there. Find her,” as if they were talking about something they had lost in the forest.

Now there was another doctor in the room. A man this time. Maybe he can find her, I thought. His words to me were soft, gentle and kind but very firm.

“I’m so sorry. I’m the most senior doctor in this hospital tonight; I am the third doctor to confirm your baby has no heartbeat. I’m so sorry; she is gone.” Gone. She can’t be GONE; I’m still pregnant.

You hear stories of primal screams when a mother loses her young in the wild. I have come to learn humans are no different. Even in the confines of the most pristine manmade settings, we are in essence - wild, free, animals. In those first moments, I made sounds I had never 36

heard come out of my mouth or body, or from any other human, and I hope I never hear them again.

Those raging, primitive noises, were followed by the most extraordinary experience of my life. A vibration entered my body; I now know it to be the highest vibration there is, Universal Source Energy, or God. It reverberated through every cell in my being. LOUD, it still echoes in my ear when I recall it saying “EVERYTHING IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE OK”. And somehow, I trusted it to be the truth.

And it was. I birthed the most beautiful angel baby girl that anyone in the birth suite that night had ever seen. She was absolutely and 100% perfect. She was grace, beauty and magic all rolled into one.

Every second, minute, hour and day of my life ever since has been the

reaction to the catalyst that altered the course of my life. I vow to live a life of grace, reverence and beauty in honour of my daughter. To teach and be the exemplar that there is magic in absolutely everything, even, and especially, in the tragic.

My trauma and grief recovery didn’t include a single antidepressant drug (even though I have used them in the past), and not one appointment with a counsellor or psychologist (even though I have previously been in therapy for OCD). I did the work on the inside. I found what I needed within me. I’m not saying my way is the way for others but for me, I knew that no counsellor or trauma expert could have met me in the depths I’d been to, so I knew I had to do the damn work myself. I used my intuition and my connection to Amelia and Universal Source/God/

To the gorgeous goddesses among us who flow with change like a dandelion floating on a gentle breeze, I salute you. I am not yet one of you. But I will be. My heart skips a beat when change presents, but no longer is my intense response equivalent to preparing for a NASA space shuttle launch. It has been 12 months of healing to get here, but every moment of bliss and distress has been worth it.

Twelve months ago, I was driving home from work one evening, when ‘it is time to quit’ popped into 38

my head. Say what?!! To resign would mean giving up what was comfortable and secure. But it was time for change. It was my time to go within and move from assisting people with their visible, outward journey to guiding their healing on the inside. You see, when the inside is firing on all cylinders, the home and workplace become magical places where production happens with ease, communication flows, relationships are positive, and learning and development are paramount.

Naturally, I was scared but pressing ‘Send’ on my resignation email was seriously the best decision. My life has changed dramatically, and there have been plenty of ‘oh heck’

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A TEAM? A TEAM THAT IS STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND ANY OPPOSITION, A TEAM THAT CAN BUILD, DEVELOP AND GROW, A TEAM THAT TO BE HONEST IS ALL ON THE SAME PAGE & TRUST EACH OTHER?

T

he teams I have played in [Polocrosse] have honestly never been the same, each time I have rolled out in the green and gold shirt for my country I have never had the same group of girls or guys to work with, trying to achieve the ultimate goal, winning.

What does it take to make a winning team? What kind of comradery needs to be achieved to create a cohesive and amicable team of players from all across the country to outperform the opposition? It isn’t an easy taskhowever, it is well worth the work and effort put into building the team and getting to know like and trust them. So, when you are thrown on a strange horse, galloping across the field flicking the ball to one anotheryou completely trust they have your back, just as you have theirs.

I feel the personalities, perceptions and unique ways we all have got to the top in our sport gives everyone’s opinions, outlooks and focuses credibility. There is always a member or two that are new to the task of representing their country, so are a little less confident and need a lot more attention on reassuring their confidence and attribution to the team. Yet, they are just as important as the older, more experienced players that have experienced all the pressure and adversity of playing their sport at a higher level.

Polocrosse is not the most common of sports, and for those of you that have never seen or heard of it, it is a cross between polo ( like prince Charles plays) netball and lacrosse. It is a team sport that requires not only hand-eye coordination with a racquet and ball, you must also direct and manoeuvre horses of which aren’t necessarily your own, especially when playing internationally.

The art of working on not only your fitness, mindset, and coordination is essential as is working on the team dynamics and getting the best out of each person, as it is vital for the success rate I have achieved in 30 games in representing Australia. Of these 30 occasions, I have not lost one game!

This success has not been handed to me, I will give you the tip! Through hard work, ambition, determination and commitment, I first represented Australia in 2007. Being the young pup of the team, and not having any idea of how the politics, dynamics and mental games among players and coaches worked was overwhelming to a new girl in a highlevel performing team.

Pure resilience and determination created a super strong-minded rookie that resulted in crowning me the best women’s player in the world. It was a tremendous accolade; however, the pedestal didn’t last long, as my strongminded personality without much

give, resulted in me being stripped of captaining the next World Cup team.

Please don’t for a second feel sorry for me- colossal blow, yes! It was something that happened for me, not too me. The lessons learnt from this and the number of teams I have played in since have built this realisation, that without the unity, without the team being open to accepting others feelings whether positive or negative or being ok to have a member not entirely fitting into the team, you won’t win! Whether that be someone who is too strong-minded, not amicable or adaptable means teams won’t get the prize, they honestly won’t achieve the winning results.

The glue that unites is just as important, if not more important then the individual champions in the team. Have you ever wondered why the underdogs that are enjoying the experience can quite often beat the top dog team? It isn’t a fluke; it is due to team camaraderie and the positive dynamics within.

COVID-19 has made me realise that other women in sport are looking for more, more to achieve in their sports success and performance. Having spent the last thirteen years at the top of my sports, I figured it is my time to share this knowledge and experience with those that want to improve not only their skills but also their teams.

My ambition now is to help as many women worldwide with all the other things that are just as important to achieving their best, whether it be mindset, confidence, goal setting, motivation, the list goes on!

Team unity; understanding different personalities and how to get the best out of other players in your team is something I am developing and will share more about in the future.

Suzette Thomas Suzette Thomas is a mother of 4 champions, a worldleading athlete as well as running several successful businesses. Suzette is renowned for being ambitious and determined, resulting in remarkable achievements.

Growing up on a small property south of Perth WA Suzette was always determined to understand the human mind after her father took his own life at age 4. She proceeded to use her psychology degree and sports focus together to maximise her high-level performance continuously.

Her only brother out of 3 sisters drowned at the age of 2, so between the two tragedies she has made it her life work to build an indoor learn to swim centre to save other children’s lives and create confidence in the kids while keeping their families whole. Her determination to achieve her best is no surprise as she has been undefeated in representing Australia 30 times in a sport called polocrosse.

Her current focus is to help other women, especially in their sports performance with overcoming mindset obstacles. Her knowledge and experience in overcoming adversity and still striving for better is admirable but also relatable.

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE; I HAVEN’T ALWAYS BEEN GOOD AT WORKING OR COLLABORATING WITH OTHER WOMEN.

F

or most of my life, I preferred male friends. I worked in a male-dominated industry for over ten years and had only a few close female relationships that would usually peter out or end due to some issue on either side. I found I preferred the sarcastic and impersonal way of men. I quickly learned to give as good as I got so to speak. I became very masculine in my dealings with other people; I wouldn’t get too involved or too deep, always keeping others at arm’s length.

I was disconnected from my femininity. I dressed mostly in jeans and shirts. I avoided other women other than a select few as I saw women as mostly backstabbing, gossiping drama queens (me included, especially when I was

around other women). I was very competitive, and so too where the women I became friends with, it was toxic for both parties.

Then I became a mum, and as they say, having kids changes everything, and they did, just not to start with.

The competing and comparing seemed to get worse as the pressure to be the perfect mum and have the perfect children now became the focal point. There was always the comparison of who’s baby walked first, cut their first tooth, who’s baby would sleep through the night, and the list goes on. The pressure built and it got too much. I never felt worthy or good enough. I was an unhappy woman, which affected how I showed up in my life and relationships.

In 2014, my youngest daughter was born and shook up my world as I knew it, which I will be forever grateful. Long story short, I experienced a break down after my youngest daughter experienced health complications, and through that, I experienced my break-through. I embarked on my personal, professional and spiritual development journey.

I came to realise after much soul searching that the reason I was so disconnected from women and myself is that I didn’t trust myself or other women.

Throughout my life, I had felt let

down numerous times. I had turned away from the one source that would enable my healing, connecting to my femininity, sensuality and sexuality.

As I healed and learned to love the woman that I was, something magical happened, I started loving the women around me more. As I started trusting myself more, I trusted other women more.

From having 1-2 women friends, I now have hundreds of women from all around the world that I adore, work and collaborate with. Every day I get to talk to the most incredible women who are making a difference.

This all happened because I chose to heal my inner world and by taking responsibility for my choices and actions.

By doing this, I was able to show up in the world in a much more grounded, open and vulnerable way allowing myself to connect with other women. I can now celebrate other women’s success without being jealous or comparing myself.

Don’t get me wrong on down days, I can fall into old habits, though the awareness and understanding kick in and I can see it for what it is and then work with it.

Becoming an empowered woman has been the most rewarding and challenging journey I have been on and continue to navigate it every day.

Here are some tips for you to create a strong foundation: Practice self-love and compassion with yourself every day. When we feel loved and loving of ourselves, we do not seek external fixes or the need to compare/ compete as we feel so good with who we are and where we are at in life.

Become self-aware. If you find yourself judging or criticising others, breathe and bring your awareness on what triggered this and why. Journalling about this or talking to someone who can support you to have your own realisations can be very healing.

Find other women who will give and receive equally; this is one thing when unbalanced creates the most friendship

and business break ups. If one of the women in the partnership over gives and the other takes too much, it can lead to feelings of resentment, anger and frustration. Also, if there isn’t open communication, then the relationship or collaboration can fall apart quickly. When collaborating make sure to get down on paper, who is to do what? What is to be given and received? By doing this, it keeps roles and responsibilities evident and also helps with clear communication of expectations on both parties.

Be ok with walking away and doing it with grace. If a relationship or collaboration breaks down and is no longer is right for you, it’s ok to let it go and to walk away. Don’t attack the other person for all of their perceived wrongs; instead, take responsibility for your part; see the lessons you have learned and grow from the situation. It will only reduce your energy and creditability if you go putting down others and creating drama. Share your feelings with a close friend, express all your feels and let yourself move on. Be the woman who sees it for what it is an experience to grow from.

It is important, however, to be mindful when nourishing your loved ones as eating has become a source of entertainment, that can often lead to bad eating habits. WFD not only brings awareness to the growing hunger in our world but mindfulness to what it is we are actually eating.

Nutrition events are held worldwide to encourage healthy eating habits.

Being mindful of what is being wasted is also of growing concern.

Wasted meals and thrown out produce contribute to our world’s hunger problem, leaving one in every nine people hungry.

IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT BRINGS FAMILIES TOGETHER, IT’S MEALTIME. THE BASIC NEED TO NOURISH OUR BODIES IS SHARED BY ALL. PREPARING SOMETHING TO EAT, AND SHARING IT WITH LOVED ONES, BRINGS A SENSE OF TOGETHERNESS LIKE NONE OTHER.

eing able to eat is not a privilege, but a right. This right is shared by every human being on this planet.

For this reason, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations created World Food Day. A day for people all over the world to come together, over our most basic human need.

Observed annually, World Food Day (WFD) takes place on October 16. First established in 1945, the day is now observed by more than 150 countries. Awareness is raised on serious issues, such as poverty and hunger. This day is set aside to bring attention to those in need.

The United States of America began celebrating in 1982, and has since collaborated with many organisations to hold feeding events nationwide. Asia, Africa and Europe participate in this global event as well. This worldwide event brings cultures together over an everyday basic need.

Beet Raspberry T WafFLes (Vegan & Gluten-Free) with Coconut Cream Topping Recipe

Filled with tasty tart fruitiness (and hidden veggies) these vibrant Red Beet and Raspberry Waffles are a delightful breakfast and brunch idea. Bonus - you can sneak some extra fiber and nutrition into your (and your kiddos’) diet!

Not only is this recipe a vegan and glutenfree option for breakfast, the ingredients include fresh nutritious raspberries and red beets. This means that waffle time includes AMAZING antioxidants and Vitamin C. Fresh raspberries offer a wonderful blend of sweet and tart flavors. Roasted beets and fresh raspberries blended with almond milk adds fabulous moisture to the gluten-free mix and provides the most STUNNING pink/red hue. Serve these waffles for a Valentine’s Day-themed breakfast, Easter or Mother’s Day brunch, or any

Wedding or Baby Shower. However, you don’t need a special reason to eat these waffles because the gorgeous color, delicious flavor, and incredible nutrients are perfect every day.

Top waffles with delicious vegan coconut cream topping, fresh berries, coconut shreds, maple syrup, almond butter, or applesauce.

For more fabulous breakfast beet recipes, try Beet Almond Pancakes (Gluten-Free) and Beet and Blueberry Almond Oatmeal Cobbler.

Ingredients: • 1-2 medium red beets, roasted • 1 cup fresh raspberries • 1 3/4 cups gluten-free all purpose flour • 3 tbsp ground flax seed • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder (ensure gluten-free if necessary) • 1/4 tsp salt • 1/4 cup sweetener of choice (honey, maple syrup, etc.)* • 1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk • 1 tsp white or apple cider vinegar • 2 tbsp coconut oil • 2 tsp vanilla • a few tbsp of coconut cream topping (optional) This recipe utilizes the natural sugars from red beets and raspberries, so the added sugar content is low. If you prefer a sweeter taste, add more sweetener of your choice.

Directions: 1. Roast beets for about 25-30 minutes. To roast beets, wrap beet in foil and cook until beets are tender when pierced with a sharp knife.

2. When beets are cool enough to handle, remove skins (skins are edible but add a chunky texture), chop into quarters, and add to high-powered blender with nondairy milk (or milk of choice) and fresh raspberries.

3. Blend until smooth and vibrantly pink! Depending on your blender, you may end up with chunky raspberry seeds. If you prefer a smoother texture, use a sieve or cheese cloth to drain or squeeze liquid, removing raspberry seeds.

4. In a large mixing bowl, mix remaining ingredients (starting with dry ingredients).

5. Add blended ingredients to the bowl and mix, making sure to smooth out clumps.

6. Preheat waffle maker, lightly sprayed with non-stick spray or rubbed with coconut oil.

7. Cook waffles according to your waffle maker’s instructions.

8. Serve waffles with fresh berries and delicious coconut cream topping (vegan).

These waffles are best eaten fresh! They can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days; however, because of the density of the waffles, they do become dry after a day or two. You can soften them with toppings, such as berries or applesauce.
