WELCOME, Over the past four decades, the list of Jefferson Award recipients is unparalleled. Among the hundreds of national figures—both public and private—are more than 62,000 unsung heroes, tens of thousands of employees and young people in communities across the country. These individuals are you. It is our mission to elevate you, to inspire, to train and to activate. It is our mission to multiply your good.

Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard, we are the largest multiplier of public service in America. Lately, it’s been hard to find a reason to celebrate, smile, and be hopeful, but for members of the Multiplying Good community, stories of kindness, generosity, and bravery have served as much needed reminders that service to others has the power to transform lives!

Through corporate partnerships, we recognize the service of outstanding employees, and help to build caring workplaces where everyone is committed to positive change.

Through media partnerships, we recognize grassroots unsung heroes and tell their stories to more than 100 million Americans each year. In middle and high schools nationwide, we are empowering tens of thousands of young people to realize their potential, develop core 21st century skills and deliver dramatic impact on the lives of those around them.

Our immersive training programs, activation opportunities, and prestigious awards platform help individuals and organizations create change and multiply their impact in the community.

This year, we have reimagined what celebrating service looks like. Although we are disappointed not to be together in person, we are honored to present this year’s Jefferson Awards on a virtual stage.

2020 NATIONAL RECIPIENTS KRISTEN BELL S. ROGER HORCHOW AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE BY A PRIVATE CITIZEN Kristen Bell is an actress, singer, producer, and philanthropist. She firmly believes giving back is both an obligation and a privilege. She has donated her time, money and enthusiasm to many organizations and causes over the years. She is on the advisory board for This Saves Lives, a for-profit company that sells healthy snack bars and donates part of the profits from each sale to fight malnutrition in children worldwide. Recently, she was named an Advocate for the United Nations’ Women’s Peace and Humanity Fund. She is a supporter of No Kid Hungry which works to make school breakfasts, summer meals and after school meals available to all kids who need them. She is part of The Alliance of Moms which supports pregnant and parenting teens in Los Angeles’ foster care system as well as Baby2Baby which provides low income families with children ages 0-12 with diapers, cribs, clothing and other basic necessities. Kristen was the driving force behind the No Kids Policy which pressured many media companies into changing their policies and no longer running unauthorized paparazzi photos of celebrities’ minor children. Over the years, she has also been involved with Do Something, Dress for Success, The Partnership for a Healthier America, Recycle Across America, People Assisting The Homeless, The Nature Conservancy, The ASPCA, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

PATRICK LAWLER OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE BENEFITING THE DISADVANTAGED Patrick Lawler is the CEO of Youth Villages, and when it comes to helping children with emotional and behavioral problems succeed he believes that doing whatever it takes is the only thing that works. That’s what led him to transform a small residential program into a national leader in children’s mental and behavioral health, committed to building strong families, delivering effective systems across the country. Youth Villages now helps more than 30,000 children, families and young people every year through a continuum of programs and services built around strengthening and restoring families. Through its LifeSet program model, the organization is leading the way to ensure that effective, comprehensive services are provided to the 20,000 young people who turn 18 in foster care every year without ever being reunited with their family or adopted. In 2009, the White House cited Youth Villages as an example of “effective, innovative nonprofits” that are “high-impact, result-oriented” organizations. In his free time, Lawler enjoys swimming, reading, biking and spending time with his family.

T OMS OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE BY A CORPORATION TOMS was established in 2006 with a promise to deliver a pair of free shoes to a child in need for every sale of their retail product. Over the course of 10 years, their Giving Team has developed relationships with over 200 Giving Partners, non-governmental and humanitarian organizations in 80 countries worldwide. By working hand-in-hand with these organizations, they understand the needs of the communities served and meet their needs by integrating TOMS resources into their existing programs. Beginning last year, TOMS expanded their giving portfolio to include impact grants, allowing them to support organizations working to address some of today’s most pressing issues including the promotion of physical safety, mental health, and equality of opportunity.

OWEN COLLEY OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE BY AN INDIVIDUAL 25 YEARS & UNDER

Owen Colley learned that so many animals had been hurt by the Australian bushfires, and was heart-broken and inspired to do something to help. So he came up with a plan — to ask family and friends for donations and, in turn, thank them with a handmade clay koala. After raising $1,000 and garnering local attention, Owen took his efforts to GoFundMe, this time with an ambitious $5,000 goal. He has since raised almost $300,000 AUD with all proceeds going to the Australian charity Wildlife Rescue South Coast. One of the most amazing results of Owen’s campaign has been seeing and hearing from people all over the world - while providing an avenue to help when situations feel helpless and serving as a reminder that, regardless of size, we can all do big things.

LARRY FITZGERALD OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Larry Fitzgerald established The Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund early in his career. The priorities of the Fund are closing the reading and technology gap especially in under-resourced schools, supporting healthy activities for kids and their families, as well as breast cancer research and support. Larry’s philanthropic work has included volunteering to visiting children at schools and hospitals, service trips abroad, raising funds, donating funds, and serving on boards and advisory committees. He has volunteered on service trips to support economic development projects in Senegal and Ethiopia, and has participated in numerous service trips to deliver hearing technology in several countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.

DAWN STALEY OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Coach Dawn Staley is the University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball Head Coach, the USA Women’s Basketball Head Coach, and former WNBA All-Star player. Dawn is being recognized for her service with the Dawn Staley Foundation, which sponsored after-school programs for middle school children living in Philadelphia from 2000-2008 and for her work with Innersole, which she co-founded. Innersole is a nonprofit dedicated to providing new sneakers to homeless children and children in need. Dawn’s motivation for Innersole came from her difficult childhood in Philadelphia, where basketball helped her focus on something she loved, and having access to good sneakers helped to make her feel like she could achieve her sports goals.

J.C. HALL OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE BENEFITING THE NEW YORK COMMUNITY J.C. Hall, LMSW, is a hip-hop artist and social worker who runs the Hip-Hop Therapy Studio program at Mott Haven Community High School, a “secondchance” transfer school in the South Bronx, which is both the birthplace of Hip-Hop culture and the poorest congressional district in the country. In 2013, starting in an old storage room, J.C. built a state-of-the-art recording studio to provide youth the opportunity to engage in the therapeutic process through writing, recording, and performing their own music. The significant effect program participation has had on students’ academic achievement and socio-emotional development has led to the studio more than doubling in size and investment. J.C. has also developed a website to honor his late mentor Dr. Edgar Tyson, the originator of Hip-Hop Therapy, in the hope of it serving as a resource for those interested in learning about the approach.

CDM, whose mission is to inspire creativity, curiosity and lifelong learning for all children, is one of the largest and most respected museums of its kind in the nation. As the mother of two boys, one with special needs, Jana is passionate about inspiring children to learn through exploration and inclusive education. Her belief in serving the community and mentoring future leaders about the importance of giving back has led her to serve as chair for Deloitte’s San Francisco Workplace Giving Campaign and as Inclusion leader, bringing the core tenets of diversity, equity and inclusion into everything she does.

Sam has been with Florida Blue since December 2013. Since 2018, Sam has volunteered with Crossroads Corral, helping them raise over $100,000 to support their mission to use horses to help victims of abuse and veterans suffering from PTSD recover and learn to trust again. Outside of fundraising efforts, Sam volunteers one day per week helping with the care and upkeep of the facility and horses used in providing therapy. From cleaning stalls, to feeding and facility repairs, Sam and the other volunteers allow Crossroads to provide therapy for over 200 people per year on an operating budget of less than $110,000 of which 100% goes to the care and feeding of the nine therapy horses.

After a terrifying childhood experience, Tracey Black overcame a fear of dogs by joining her local 4-H dog club. After completing 10 years in the program, she returned immediately as a volunteer leader. She is passionate about teaching youth participants how to train their dogs, as well as life skills such as compassion, negotiation, respect, responsibility, and teamwork. Tracey is an integral part of the program, as she also volunteers her time to complete paperwork, update the website, and answer emails. To honor her legacy, the club created an award for members who participate in volunteer work.

Anne has worked with foster youth at a group home for several years. As she has gotten to know these teens, Anne has been struck by the ways in which they go into every situation at a disadvantage: socially, vocationally and academically. Anne learns their passions and tries to enroll them in classes where they can excel, such as dance. In Anne’s research for healthy environments where foster youth can learn new skills and find motivation, she could not find any organization that nurtured the youth’s strengths.

So, Anne started Up3: Unlocking Passion, Potential & Purpose in foster youth. As a result of Jackie’s experience in preparing for and assisting with victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, she founded Worldwide Community First Responder (WCFR), a nonprofit that provides health education, first aid, and disaster-preparedness training.

She has presented locally, nationally and internationally at nursing conferences about WCFR and its collaboration with other nonprofit organizations to improve global health outcomes. In addition, she has presented at International Research Congress Conferences in China, South Africa, and Ireland regarding health education and disaster preparedness projects that she initiated through WCFR in the United States and Haiti.

To date, her organization has educated and trained more than 350,000 community members in critical life-saving skills.

Beginning at age 16, Grace Dehel found an unusual way to volunteer that combined her love of children, Christmas, and service in a holiday giftwrapping stand at a local mall benefiting UNICEF. Over the years, her commitment has grown from a few 4-hour shifts into a family commitment that encompasses the entire Christmas season, as Grace, her mother, and sister took over the operation in 2007. With Grace’s continued leadership, the project continues to raise approximately $10,000 annually to benefit UNICEF. She mobilizes hundreds of volunteers from local student and adult groups, local employers, and her own family to cover roughly 250 giftwrapping shifts. Her service leads to long nights and weekends in addition to her regular job, but Grace loves the work and says “without this stand, it just wouldn’t feel like Christmas for me.”

Donnie Gravley has championed all giving and volunteer efforts within Shellpoint Mortgage Servicing (part of the NewRez Family of Companies), since he came on board eight years ago. He led all efforts through the company’s Humanitarian Council in Houston, TX, Tempe, AZ, and in his home office of Greenville, SC. Through Donnie’s leadership, the company has donated significantly to the March of Dimes, United Way, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Susan G. Komen, Wounded Warrior Project, as well as local schools, educational programs, and women’s centers. While Donnie has been at the forefront of his organization’s philanthropic efforts, he also spends a great deal of his own personal time volunteering with these organizations throughout the year.

As an active leader for the Deloitte Indianapolis office Annual United Way fundraising campaign, Sarah helped to increase campaign donations to over $245,000 (15% increase) and 74% participation. Sarah is on the United Way of Central Indiana’s (UWCI) LINC and UWCI’s ELEVATE Planning Committee. Sarah and UWCI LINC organized LINC/Deloitte Trunk-or-Treat event to support Fathers and Families in Indianapolis which gave kids in Indianapolis a safe place to Trick-or-Treat. UWCI’s ELEVATE raised more than $85,000 toward the United Way Basic Needs Fund to ensure Indianapolis neighbors have access to safe and affordable housing. Sarah has also helped coordinate Deloitte’s Impact Day by partnering with UWCI. The entire Deloitte Indianapolis office spent the day helping five Indianapolis organizations.

Christopher served in AmeriCorps and since 2012, has been an active member of the United Way PRIDE Council, advocating for the creation and sustainment of GayStraight Alliances (GSAs) in public middle and high schools across Delaware.

Christopher volunteers with The Village, a community of LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and their allies, dedicated to empowering and supporting members of all ages, serving on the Village Task Force which is planning a community center for LGBTQ+ youth and adults. Christopher was fortunate enough to be supported by family, friends and teachers when he came out as a teenager and has paid this forward, by encouraging others to live authentically.

Kely Páez-Urbano is a native Colombian who has worked as a Lecturer of Spanish in the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University for almost fifteen years.

Coordinator for Intermediate Spanish and director of the Service Learning Program “Ayuday Aprende,” she values Spanish as a tool for supporting community organizations and building lasting relationships. Seeing her students teach Spanish to adult learners, tutor exchange students, and express appreciation for other cultures brings her joy. In Spring 2020, Kely Páez-Urbano received funding from the office of the Vice Provost for Engagement for two Spanish Service-Learning Projects to continue this service work.

Jenny White has a passion for helping others, especially those living in poverty. Since 2013, Jenny has been an active volunteer and supporter of Compassion International, a child-advocacy ministry. Compassion works in 25 countries to release children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty through child sponsorship. Jenny serves as both a sponsor and an advocate. She regularly speaks on behalf of the organization, sharing information about at-risk children in need of sponsorship. She and her family sponsor three children in Uganda and Jenny has personally traveled to Uganda five times to volunteer for the program. She is continually promoting the cause and working to raise money and awareness for the families in poverty in Uganda.

84-year-old Nancy Abraham has fought the stigma of mental illness for decades. When her son Dylan was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1974, Nancy reached out to other Madison mothers forming the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Dane County. In just two years, they held a national conference in Madison with 280 attendees. This alliance is now known as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) with the mission to provide education, support, advocacy, and awareness for individuals impacted by mental illness. Nancy and Dylan have traveled across the world for the past four decades.

Today there are nearly one thousand NAMI affiliates across the U.S. reaching millions of people. They provide support programs, community education, and advocate for increased funding and better access to quality mental health services, shaping public policy. Nancy Abraham changed the course of history for the mentally ill, a beautiful example of the power of a mother’s love.

Seaford, Delaware businessman Jeffrey Benson takes time out every Wednesday to teach a group of young men life lessons. He recruited friends and colleagues in his Sussex County community for a group he calls The Gentlemen’s Club. The club is about leadership for young males, giving them a sense of purpose and allowing them to know they do have individuals who care. The Air Force Veteran also launched a youth shareholder initiative with WSFS Bank, giving each student five shares of stock and planting the seeds to grow generational wealth. He serves on the Seaford School Board, local and state boards, participates in toy drives, and holds forums for the community to have their voice heard.

Throughout her childhood and career as a nurse, Marie Blanchard saw the disparity between the haves and the have-nots in her small community. In 2002, she solicited the help of nursing students to conduct neighborhood surveys to establish the need for a free clinic to provide basic health care services to families in that Boise area. From here, The Friendship Clinic was founded in 2003 and has grown to include physical and occupational therapy, mental health counseling, social work services, and health education and nutritional counseling. Marie retired as Executive Director in 2016 at age 91. In the Fall of 2016, the Board of Directors of the clinic renamed the clinic The Marie Blanchard Friendship Clinic. Since her retirement from participation in running day-to-day activities of the clinic, Marie remains a voting member of the Board of Directors.

As founder of Salvation and Social Justice (SandSJ) and Pastor of Bethel AME Church, Reverend Dr. Charles F. Boyer connects Black faith-based organizations to fight institutional racism.

Reverend Dr. Boyer founded The United Black Agenda, connecting major black organizations to ensure that black and brown people have equitable access to resources. Only a few years after founding SandSJ, Reverend Dr. Boyer closed two youth prisons in NJ; demanded justice legislation for cannabis decriminalization and expungement; and put a spotlight on police brutality, resulting in Governor Murphy’s signing of S1036 into a law -- which states that the Attorney General handles the investigation and prosecution of a person’s death if it occurs during an encounter with a police officer.

Katie’s daughter Olivia passed away after battling her cancer for 16 months shortly before her second birthday. Katie, turned her experience into a force for good in treating childhood cancers. Katie and her then husband started the Olivia Caldwell Foundation which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars towards research into the area of pediatric brain tumors. What sets Katie apart, is the fact that she is willing to confront every day the thing that took her daughter from her and turn it into something positive.

Parents who benefit from the Olivia Caldwell Foundation may never meet Katie, but they owe Katie a debt that can never be repaid. What drives Katie forward is to spare other children and parents what Olivia went through.

Damon has been an active leader in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Boy Scouts of America organization for more than 13 years. Not surprisingly, the parents provide a glowing report of this man who has challenged their children to become responsible members of the greater community, encouraging them in every endeavor, and sacrificing time with his own family to meet the needs of his scouts. Parents appreciate how he gets the boys involved in events like a flag retirement ceremony, volunteer at different lodges in the area to support veterans, in addition to the expected Scouting for Food and normal camping activities. He uses these activities to help the scouts mature into young men.

His scouts appreciate the way that he relates to them on their level to problem solve and get the most out of their experience.

Dale Childress was diagnosed with prostate cancer 14 years ago; however, he doesn’t let the disease define him. Many doctors have told him he would not survive another day, yet, every day at 6 a.m. for the past 8 years, he comes into his son’s business, Woodstock Bake Shop, and hand writes inspiring quotes on to-go boxes for customers. Many people do not know the messages are written by him, yet they feel each message was personally meant for them. He also co-founded “Livin’ A Dream” Foundation which raises money for cancer patients. He continues to battle the disease today and says “behind many smiling faces are wounded souls.” He stays optimistic each day to inspire more than 3,000 of his followers on Facebook.

Pam was nominated for all the work she does for our local animal shelter. Pam devotes countless hours volunteering at the shelter, driving animals to and from their vet appointments, and even opening up her home to animals that need fostering. She helps with fundraising and office work. She has fostered over 160 kittens in the last 5 years and helps train and mentor other fosters. Pam is truly never off the clock when it comes to helping animals! She does so much for so many animals in need and is so selfless with her time and energy.

Joe started a local nonprofit, Hope in a Box, in 2017 to fight bullying against LGBT kids in rural schools. The cause was personal: when Joe was growing up in rural Galway, he said he often felt isolated and insecure. He rarely saw LGBT people represented in a positive light, and homophobic insults were a daily reality at school. Joe believes educators can dispel stereotypes and build empathy by weaving LGBT history and literature into their classrooms. His nonprofit donates literature featuring LGBT protagonists, writes empathy-building curricula around these materials, and coaches educators on LGBT terminology. Joe has built a team of 10 volunteers and since starting with six rural schools in the Capital Region, they expanded to over 100 schools across the country impacting over 12,000 students.

As a 28year veteran of the Milledgeville Police Department, she has experienced firsthand how important it is to help children succeed. With a little help from the Chief of Police, Gray founded the Junior Police Academy, a summer camp directed at teaching children about avoiding drugs, gangs, peer pressure, and the importance of making good life choices. Junior Police Academy was founded in 1999 and since then has grown from about 25 students to almost 150 students per year. When asked why these kids mean so much to her, “I feel it is my personal mission to make sure that no kid goes without.” Since then, Major Gray has been instrumental in getting programs in the force that help the community -- like the Specialized Patrol unit that help guides the community.

Twelve years ago, the Fund for Women was just an idea that needed guidance during it’s critical startup phase. Penny Gregg saw a need to establish an organization whose purpose would be to help girls and women realize life goals and achieve economic self-sufficiency in the Southern Tier of New York. Years later the Fund for Women has supported hundreds of girls and women, granting over a quarter of a million dollars to individuals and organizations. These funds have been used to provide “tools” for young girls and women to take control of life’s paths. Twins Amy and Amber Haskill were separated when they were just 6 years old. For 4 years, Amy moved from home to home 4 times and Amber moved 11 times. As foster children, the twins had nothing – not each other and not even their own clothes. When they were 11, the Haskills adopted Amy and Amber. Together, the twins came up with an idea – to start a clothing drive at their junior high to help foster children who needed clothes, shoes, socks, and more. Expecting to get 200 items, their first drive received 2,000 items and turned into a nonprofit called Closet2Closet. Foster children can come in and shop for free items themselves and if they are unable, the twins pick out items from a referral form and deliver the care package. From serving 55 kids five years ago, Amy and Amber helped 1,200 foster care youth in 2019.

When the COVID-19 crisis hit, Jada knew she wanted to help others in her community.

She started the Greater Lafayette Sewing Masks Facebook group to make masks free of charge for her friends who are nurses. Within the first day 10 people had already joined.

They quickly grew to about 980 people. On any given day between 50 and 100 volunteers are sewing masks that are donated throughout greater Lafayette. The masks are donated to hospitals, local businesses, schools or individuals. Anyone that puts in a request gets one. Jada, who has an auto-immune disorder, is passionate about helping others and keeping the community safer from COVID-19.

Shannon Henry is the President of SASS Go, Surviving Assault Standing Strong, a self-defense program empowering women with the skills to protect themselves and escape/fight against assault. As a teenager, Shannon was raped at knifepoint by someone she knew and trusted. Years later, after numerous attempts at recovery, she still had nightmares and feared for her own daughters. Enter SASS; after taking one class, Shannon felt more powerful than ever in her life. Since Henry took the reins of SASS in 2014, it has grown to fill classes to capacity every semester at University of SC, workshops across the state, courses at churches/YMCAs, and trainings for women in law enforcement.

Jerry started the Haunted Sawmill in 2010. He was the treasurer for a local Boy Scout Troop and didn’t have enough money to cover the scouts summer camp fees. He wanted to start a fundraiser that would enable Scouts to do scouting activities and not worry about how to fund them. He created a committee and they got started planning. The Haunted Sawmill has grown each and every year. Jerry created the Friends of Vincent Foundation that now oversees the Haunted Sawmill and provides monetary support to youth in Merrill area. Jerry has been the chair of this event since the very beginning and has been the driving force and creative mastermind for this incredible fundraiser. Jerry oversees 60-100 volunteers each show night during October and most recently raised $24,000 to support area youth.

Angie volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) where she advocates for the best interest of abused, neglected, and dependent children to the courts. Aside from on-going intensive training, Angie volunteers as guardian for three individuals who have developmental disabilities. She volunteers at Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center to provide music therapy and she goes to nursing homes to work with patients who are receiving hospice care. Angie volunteers at her church, Lima Exchange Club, the Samaritan House, and St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. Angie is a charter member of the Marimor Legacy Foundation, created to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

The challenges facing teens in foster care can be tremendous and that’s what drove Mike and Lisa Irvin to start their Flint Hills Foster Teen Camps. Eleven years later, and over 500 youth served, the camp continues to grow. Held on the Irvin’s sprawling ranch in rural Kansas, the camps are completely free to the kids thanks to their relentless fundraising and grant efforts. Vulnerable foster teens who are about to age-out learn how to balance budgets, cook meals, and develop other life and social skills necessary for them to survive on their own. The camp’s challenge course includes obstacles like the 12-foot climbing wall and a blindfolded walk on a balance beam. The Irvins say that it’s during the challenge courses that you can see the teens slowly coming out of their shells, opening up about issues they’re battling after long stays in the foster system.

LaDaye Johnson knows that in order to do well, sometimes people need a little help.

For the last decade, the Wilmington, Delaware, native has not only helped, but inspired others to help those around them. Having grown up in Wilmington, Johnson now uses his experiences going through many rough patches to help relate to kids facing similar issues. Shot at 14, Johnson credits the older men in the neighborhood who pushed him to do better and become a better man. Now, he is trying to be one of those figures in the community and holds giveaways in Wilmington. This past year, he gave out about 800 backpacks to kids, between 20 and 30 laptops, almost 900 turkeys for Thanksgiving, and 15,000 toys.

Helping and serving others is what Marsha was put here to do. A transplant to Caldwell, Marsha has committed herself to finding solutions to the needs of the community. “I feel there’s a need and I want to be part of the solution to the problem and I hope that in doing that, I can make the world a better place for my kids to grow up in.” says Marsha.

She hopes to lead by example for future generations. In addition to the ten community organizations she is involved with, Marsh started the Caldwell Education and Leadership Foundation, which in two years provided $60,000 to teachers to improve their classrooms.

Connie has made a career out of shattering the glass ceiling. As a member of the Lions Club for nearly 20 years, she was the first woman to hold a number of positions at the organization. LeCleir-Meyer was the first female Altoona Club president, zone chair, region chair and district governor and just the second woman from Wisconsin to serve as an international director. Growing up Connie was taught a lot about service from her father, a career military man. However, her career in service was surprisingly started by a fight with her father. “He tried to talk me out of it because at the time the club was for men only, and I didn’t really like that, so I asked mom to help me,” LeCleir-Meyer said. “So, she convinced dad it was important for us to be in the club, so I became the first woman in that club.” She first became a Lion as a way to network with those in her community, but it didn’t take long before she was hooked. Now, she mentors other women who are carving out their own path in the club. “I went in thinking if I can learn it, it won’t be so hard for other women,” she said.

Wheelchair-bound and unable to speak, Doug McNeil refuses to let ALS dim his passion: bringing light to young people worldwide with no electricity. Since Doug co-founded Lighting for Literacy in 2012, students have assembled 1,100 free solar lighting systems that the nonprofit has shipped to serve 20,000 impoverished people in 40 communities around the world. Despite needing 24-hour care for Lou Gehrig’s disease since 2018, Doug inspires as he leads and expands the nonprofit’s reach, communicating through his eyes. Doug not only helped invent the compact, renewable light source, he also provided STEM education to more than 3,600 Silicon Valley students aged 9-18 as they assemble the battery, solar panel, circuit control and LED strip. The result: the equivalent of a 60-watt bulb that gives four hours of light to people living off the power grid, so underserved youth can read, do homework and ultimately, combat poverty through education.

When Julie’s fifth grade daughter was the victim of bullying, Julie knew she had to take a stand and do something more. She decided it was time to take the lesson of kindness and teach it to all students at Spring Grove Elementary and in January 2014, the “Kindness Club” was formed. What started off as a simple classroom lesson about being kind, has since transformed into a worldwide initiative to spread kindness. As a local law enforcement officer Percy Powell is going above and beyond to help make positive connections between the community, students and law enforcement. With security his first-hand task, the York school officer’s rapport with the students, teachers and parents goes way beyond law enforcement. He’s not just the classroom cop to these kids.

He’s “Mr. Powell”: a leader, friend and protector. Louis “Big Lou” Ramirez wanted to make positive change in his own life. He started “I (Heart) Love Laredo” a loosely organized group dedicated to making positive strides in life and their hometown of Laredo, Texas. The group has logged approximately 288 volunteer hours with $7323.84 in kind value towards overall litter prevention goals. At Andover High School, our SIA team is made up of 61 members and 8 student officers who lead our team in all club activities. After surveying our members we decided to focus on a single issue that affects millions of people across the world: climate change. For our impact project, our team planned an environmental sustainability project for February 2020. Each week of our sustainability month would have a different theme full of activities for our student body to participate in.

The four weeks of our environmental sustainability month were education, waste reduction, daily challenges, and fundraising. In just four weeks we raised $1,575 and distributed 90 compost bins, 20 reusable water bottles, 80 silicon straws, and 500 environmental stickers. Throughout our project, our team developed a variety of skills including teamwork, communication, and project management skills, just to name a few.

Our team focused our efforts on two main passions: the environment and immigration. To make Christel House a greener place, we tackled issues of waste.

We sought to eliminate our reliance on styrofoam trays that take 500 years to degrade and advocated for more eco-friendly options. Our academy’s demographics lean towards Hispanic/Latino and many of us have firsthand experience on what it means to be an immigrant or first-generation U.S. citizen. We held a canned food drive specifically for immigrants and refugees and collaborated with community organizations to provide an outlet for people to express their culture and experiences through a cohesive art piece. This allows our community to bond over our diversity in times where there is apparent alienation.

Our Students in Action team started in 2015, a year when our small school lost three parents to heart trauma. A student said, “we need to do something” and our team formed, trained our school in CPR, and helped pass a bill requiring hands-only CPR training across South Carolina high schools. Each year since then, we’ve focused on a community problem and worked to make a difference. This year’s theme grew out of the mental health struggle all around us, coupled with the loss of a recent grad. Our 15 students trained in QPR, the national program to better listen to peers, and submitted a state bill for an excused mental health day from school. We hosted a teen conference called Treat Yourself 2020 which brought together students from across our area, giving them an opportunity to share their struggle and learn from area professionals how to better cope with mental illness. This year our service was personal. #StopTheStigma

Our SIA team is made up of 40 students and six officers. This year we worked to make an impact on child poverty by hosting food drives and winter wear drives.

Our main project was a book donation to Stubbs Early Education Center. We chose this school due to the lack of literary resources. Our team’s goal was to collect 200 books by winter break in a K-12 drive at our school, but we ultimately fell short.

So we modified the project to include businesses in the area. During this process, our SIA team came together and learned resilience as we uplifted each other and found new ways to make this project more successful than expected. By the new year, our Newark Charter SIA team collected over 350 books for the Stubbs library, classrooms, and their Dual Generation Center which impacted not only Stubbs students and families, but also community members that attend the Center.

The Hopeful Hands team of fifteen 7-12th grade homeschoolers conducted in-depth research on the needs of foster youth and learned the majority are not equipped to successfully transition to independence. The team planned and implemented a comprehensive set of projects that provided emotional and educational support to foster youth. They designed and provided monthly HOPE classes at Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services. Then, recruited professional volunteers to teach the art, journaling, and career classes. They partnered with the Thrive in Joy Nick Fagnano Foundation for a character-building class. After raising $8,600, they provided laptops to each of the seven Optimist graduates, delivered 300 Totes of Hope bags and supported local foster youth programs. Multiplying Good’s Student in Action program encouraged each team member to grow as community leaders and inspired them to shine a light of hope in the foster community.
