Outstanding Student-Led Service Project - LEAD360 Dover: Mayor Robin Christiensen Enzo Vincent In his 4th year engaging his community to collect new pajamas, Enzo impacted over 3,500 Delaware Children in need. This year, he expanded Enzo’s Mission to Spread Hope Foundation by raising funds to donate 9 beds to children who were previously sleeping on floors. Working with school crisis counselors, he was able to give these children a mattress, protective cover, new sheets, comforters, pillows, and new pajamas. Georgetown: Mayor Bill West Clover Knights 4-H Club The Clover Knights 4-H Club believes in the importance of giving back within their community and engages in community service each month. Some of their projects include Adopt-A-Highway, Coastal Clean-up, Easter baskets for veterans, Ronald McDonald House Wishlist, canned good drives, Rock Your Socks, Stockings for Soldiers, Hats & Mittens for the homeless, and Christmas caroling. However, their featured project this year was fulfilling the Christmas Gift Wishes with Harrison House, where they were able to benefit over 150 people and all 131 residents of Harrison House this past holidays season- including interviewing each resident to hear their wish, shopping, and delivering the presents back to Harrison House along with cards and caroling. Lewes: Mayor Ted Becker Cape Henlopen High School Latin American Student Organization With about 75 members, and another 25 graduates who continue to support the club, Cape High’s Latin American Student Organization (LASO) provides assistance welcoming the school’s newest Latino students. About 16% of Cape Henlopen High School students are Latino and LASO members help new Latin American students integrate into the school community. LASO helps with translating, afterschool tutoring, helping with college and student-aid applications, as well as providing acceptance and understanding for new students. In addition, LASO helps in the community and holds fundraisers for important causes. Milford: Mayor Archie Campbell Create 2Learn & 2Lead 4-H Club Throughout the year, Create 2Learn & 2Lead 4-H Club serves the community through a variety of events, including Go Bags for Code Purple and donations to the Milford Food Pantry. Over the holiday season, the club participates in Trim-a-Tree, Operation Christmas Child, Holiday Meal Blessing boxes, Fur-baby blessing boxes, Christmas Sacks for Code Purple, and holiday cards for Delaware veterans. While helping their neighbors, the 4-Hers learned valuable life skills and experience the importance of giving time to their community.

Newark: Mayor Jerry Clifton Sabin Lowe Sabin has completed multiple service projects with a common theme benefiting the environment and raising his community’s awareness of threats to the environment. Sabin’s projects include bi-monthly stream and coastal clean-up, school straw letter writing campaign, Sierra Club and River Protector volunteer, creating a petition to prevent fracking (getting 100,000 signatures), speaking at the Delaware youth Climate Summit, Main Street & plastic-Free Delaware, and teaching English in Spain. Seaford: Mayor David Genshaw Seaford Middle School Builder’s Club Students completed a variety of projects to benefit the Seaford community. They mismatched over 4,000 socks to support World Down Syndrome Down Day, made crafts and wreaths with the residents of Lofland Nursing home at Christmas and Easter, and adopted a family to provide Christmas presents for 4 local children. The Builder’s Club also participated in Operation Support our Troops for recently deployed Delaware Army National Guard troops. They collected hygiene items, food, and fun activities to send each month including letters and cards. Wilmington: Mayor Mike Purzyicki Delaware Youth Leadership Network Nineteen students from the Delaware Youth Leadership Network (DYLN) Class of 2019 and six peer mentors designed, planned, and executed the Diamond Challenge local pitch event in Wilmington in February 2019. Organizing themselves into 6 teams, the DYLN students volunteered over 700 hours organized all aspects of the event including recruiting judges, planning events, securing sponsorships, communication, and logistics serving over 150 attendees.
LEAD360 Activation Awards Bank of America Bank of America employees and their families donated items and packed Manna Bags as part of the company’s Family Volunteer Day at the Deerfield Campus. Through this event, Bank of America donated 230 Manna Bags to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, Friendship House, and Ministry of caring. Delaware 4-H Delaware 4-Hers collected items and packed 147 Manna Bags at several 4-H events throughout the state over the holiday season. Individual 4-H clubs and the statewide 4-H Junior Council joined forces to benefit their neighbors who were experiencing homelessness. Early College High School Early College High School @ DSU serves high school students throughout Delaware and chose to donate the 103 Manna Bags that they packed throughout the state as well. Led by the Hornets in Action service club, Early College High worked as a school to collect items, pack bags, and distribute to several agencies. MULTIPLYING GOOD
Outstanding Service by Employees in the Workplace Grace Dehel- New Castle County Government Beginning at age 16, Grace Dehel found an unusual way to volunteer that combined her love of children, Christmas, and service in a holiday giftwrapping stand at a local mall benefiting UNICEF. Over the years, her commitment has grown from a few 4-hour shifts into a family commitment that encompasses the entire Christmas season, as Grace, her mother, and sister took over the operation in 2007. With Grace’s continued leadership, the project continues to raise approximately $10,000 annually to benefit UNICEF. She mobilizes hundreds of volunteers from local student and adult groups, local employers, and her own family to cover roughly 250 giftwrapping shifts. Her service leads to long nights and weekends in addition to her regular job, but Grace loves the work and says “without this stand, it just wouldn’t feel like Christmas for me.” Christopher Moore- ChristianaCare Christopher served in AmeriCorps and since 2012, has been an active member of the United Way PRIDE Council, advocating for the creation and sustainment of Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) in public middle and high schools across Delaware. Christopher volunteers with The Village, a community of LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and their allies, dedicated to empowering and supporting members of all ages, serving on the Village Task Force which is planning a community center for LGBTQ+ youth and adults. Christopher was fortunate enough to be supported by family, friends and teachers when he came out as a teenager and has paid this forward, by encouraging others to live authentically.
Outstanding Service Benefitting Local CommunitiesDelawareOnline/The News Journal LaDaye “Cooley” Johnson LaDaye Johnson, a child of a single mom, credits his neighborhood on the East Side of Wilmington for steering him in the right direction. They saw something in him that at a young age he did not see in himself. By the time he got to college he knew he had to give back to those who helped him get there. In an effort to help kids throughout Wilmington LaDaye started Cool Shoes Inc., a organization that hosts summer camps, runs fundraisers and drives for the local community. From Easter egg hunts in April, to backpack drives in August, to turkey give aways in November to Christmas toy drives in December, Johnson enlists his family, friends and local businesses to help. Johnson has become a vital member of the community with his love for wanting to give back to the kids at the forefront of all his efforts. At his last toy drive more than 10,000 toys were collected and he provided Christmas for roughly 3,000 youth in the City of Wilmington.

UnitedHealthcare congratulates the
2020 Jefferson Awards recipients for their outstanding contributions helping the community.
Chase Marvil Chase Marvil was just 15 years old in 2013 when he created The Inspiring Project aimed to eliminate bullying and suicidal thoughts in people. His global movement is now 400,000 strong because of the need for positvity in schools and on social media. In addition to his inspiring and postive social posts, Chase makes presentations to schools, speaks at conferences and hosts his own Impact Night at his local library. Chase has raised over $5,000 through his organization and has donated to different charities such as The Boys and Girls Club and Delmarva Teen Challenge.In 2018 he wanted to do more to help youth all across the State of Delaware who want to change their future and obtain their college degree. His Inspiring Project Scholarship fund gives out 2 scholarships each year. One for a deserving senior at his alma mater, Woodbridge High School, and the other for any Delaware, Maryland or Virginia high school senior or college student. Bob Reese Inspired by his parents’ generosity around the holidays, retired Air Force Master Sgt. Robert Reese, along with a whole host of volunteers, cook, set up, and serve a traditional holiday meal for the servicemen, servicewomen, and their families on the Dover Air Force Base. He has been doing this every December for the past 15 years. Operation Feed the Troops started out with four friends back in 2004 when Bob and his team fed about 300 people. Each year the event continues to grow with many others joining the team which now includes over 100 volunteers. Last year the team fed close to 800 people during the two shifts, one at 11AM and one at 6PM, in a large hanger on the base.The volunteers include local businesses, non-profits, churches and other military organizations. Reese says there is no greater joy to him than helping take care of those men and women in uniform. Zaria and Hailey Willard Sisters Zaria and Hailey Willard love to read and are using their voices to encourage children to read more by reading live at 8PM using their social media sites, Facebook and Instagram. Before they go live the sisters go to the Dover Library and pick out books- some they have read and some they haven’t. They pick books with characters that look like them because a lot of kids don’t see characters that look like them. Before going on vacations, they have even made videos in advance and then post them since their followers look forward to seeing them each night. Their Mom did not want them using or being on social media, but she agreed being on it in a positive way would help light the world. They say the feedback of their little project has been great. The sisters plan to host read-aloud sessions at the Dover Library and are in the process of writing a children’s book series. Ultimately, they hope that their efforts will encourage children to read more and help raise the reading statistics in Delaware.

Outstanding Service Benefiting Local Communities- WBOC Jeffrey T. Benson, Jr. Seaford, Delaware businessman Jeffrey T. Benson, Jr. takes time out every Wednesday to teach a group of young men life lessons. He recruited friends and colleagues in his Sussex County community for a group he calls The Gentlemen’s Club. The club is about leadership for young males, giving them a sense of purpose and allowing them to know they do have individuals who care. The Air Force Veteran also launched a youth shareholder initiative with WSFS Bank, giving each student five shares of stock and planting the seeds to grow generational wealth. He serves on the Seaford School Board, local and state boards, participates in toy drives, and holds forums for the community to have their voice heard.
Outstanding Service by a Company or Organization Cameron D. Hamlin Foundation In September of 2015 after years of grieving, fighting laws, and speaking out about the 2006 murder of Cameron D. Hamlin, the Hamlin family found their joy by uplifting the community while keeping their loved one’s spirit alive and started the Cameron D. Hamlin Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to decrease gun violence and to increase humanity by touching the mind and hearts of the youth and adults of Wilmington by lending the parents a hand and keeping the children active. With the generous support of donors, they have helped many other grieving families to meet essential daily needs and work towards a brighter future by promoting education and community support. To date the foundation has provided over 300 winter coats through their annual coat drive, donated 3,000 book bags, hosted Christmas Toy Drives and clothing drives. In addition to their annual community drives, the foundation awards a $500 scholarship each year to a selected teen volunteer to help with the college education. In 2007, the family successfully lobbied for a bill that would enforce stricter sanctions on the use of a firearm by a convicted felon. The law is now known as “Cameron’s Law.” Gals That Give Gals That Give was founded in September of 2013 by Catrina Jefferson, Stephanie Preece and Kim Wilson. Their mission is to provide the opportunity for all women to be engaged philanthropically in real and meaningful ways that impact the community. The “Gals” host dinner events 8 times a year and all proceeds from the evening benefit a Kent County non-profit organization who also attends and makes a presentation about their work during the evening. They average 250 people at their events and raise between $5,000-$10,000 for the charity through tickets sales and an auction of 25-60 items donated by local people or organizations in the community. Some of the beneficiaries have included Make-A-Wish Delaware, Code Purple Kent County and The Beau Biden Foundation to name a few. They have raised over $317,000 since their inception. NerdiT Foundation NerdiT Foundation was established by Markevis Gideon, as the philanthropic arm of his company NerdiT Now. The foundation believes in empowering underserved communities and that donating computers is a step towards gaining the tools necessary to study in school, apply to a job/college, or simply connect with long lost relatives. In middle school a teacher allowed Markevis to take an old computer home so he could experiment with the repairs. That day changed his life forever. For every $100 raised they donate one basic computer to a family in need. For every $225 raised they donate an average speed computer to a family in need and for every $325 raised a computer with great specs is donated to a family in need, a community center or to a student getting ready for college. To date they have 112 volunteers and donors and have donated over 400 computers in 9 cities and 4 countries.
Outstanding Service by a Young American Maggie Boyd Maggie Boyd founded Recycled Roses after seeing how many flowers are wasted after weddings, funerals, corporate events, proms and school events. She realized that the discarded flowers could make a big difference for a local senior in a nursing facility. Inspired by her visits to her grandmother, who also resides in a local nursing home, she decided to take action to extend the life of the flowers while impacting her community and reducing waste. Maggie created business cards and excitement on social media for her project. Then, with the help of friends and family began collecting and redistributing arrangements to nursing homes. She makes most of her deliveries after school, on weekends and around her academic and athletic schedule. Since the inception of her organization Maggie has provided dozens of recycled arrangements to facilities all over New Castle County and has logged more than 100 volunteer hours. Megan Chen As a high school freshman, Megan Chen began to learn about the food problems in her community directly from community members that live there. It is through that work, and her work as a volunteer at a city-wide community garden, that furthered her interest in gardening, environmental science and inspired her to start her own non-profit, The Urban Garden Initiative. Her organization aims to empower and inspire youth to achieve urban sustainability through a gardening-based program. She has hosted a series of workshops and programs at 10 different schools and community centers that were centered around the environment, sustainability education, and the creation of container vegetable gardens. Megan has partnered with many local organizations and is additionally working on other urban ag projects. One of those is working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and Newark Natural Foods in designing several 6-week programs that will make gardening and environmental education accessible to more students. Aman Singh At a young age Aman realized that hygiene can impact a person’s ability to secure a job as well as affect their self-esteem. As the President of Global Youth H.E.L.P.’s (GYH) High School chapter, a non-profit in Newark that aims to improve lives by training young people to take action and become leaders in their communities, he and some friends decided to take action. Through GYH, Aman organized and implemented a hygiene product donation drive and they created more than 300 hygiene packages and donated them to local homeless shelters over the holidays. He also launched a backpack drive for young people in his community and was able to fill more that 500 bags with supplies for those in need. Aman is extremely dedicated to his work as a health care advocate and no surprise he plans to pursue a degree in healthcare.
Outstanding Service by a High School Newark Charter School Newark Charter’s SIA team is made up of 40 students and six officers. This year they worked to make an impact on child poverty by hosting food drives and winter wear drives. Their main project was a book donation to Stubbs Early Education Center. They chose this school due to the lack of literary resources. The team’s goal was to collect 200 books by winter break in a K-12 drive at Newark Charter, but they ultimately fell short. So the team modified the project to include businesses in their area. During this process, the SIA team came together and learned resilience as they uplifted each other and found new ways to make this project more successful than expected. By the new year, the Newark Charter SIA team collected over 350 books for the Stubbs library, classrooms, and their Dual Generation Center which impacted not only Stubbs students and families, but also community members that attend the dual generation center.
