LEEZA GIBBONS Leeza Gibbons is an Emmy award-winning American television host, NYT Best Selling Author, and philanthropist. Using her experiences hosting, producing, and reporting for shows such as Entertainment Tonight, The PBS show My Generation, and her own talk show, LEEZA, she became an instrumental advocate for healthcare, wellness and empowerment, always encouraging audiences to show up for their lives and participate in change.

That is exactly what she did when she founded her nonprofit “Leeza’s Care Connection” in 2002 in honor of her mother, Jean, who battled Alzheimer’s disease. This was a fulfillment of a promise that Leeza made to her mom when her mother asked her to simply, “tell the story and make it count” and for over 25 years, she has been doing just that. Leeza’s Care Connection embodies what Leeza wished her family had during their own caregiving journey – a place of support, a hub for questions, a resource center, and a connection point for caregivers. Leeza’s Care Connection offers crucial support and resources to caregivers and individuals facing Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic illnesses, impacting countless families.

Recently, in partnership with Public Health Americorps, Leeza has launched an innovative program to address compassion fatigue and other mental health challenges that come with caring, called HUGS, Helping U Grow Strong. It’s a peer-topeer mentoring program she created to empower carepartners to “ hold onto themselves even while letting go of someone they love”. She was also appointed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as a patient advocate on the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and has an impressive service record of support for everything from The Red Cross to AARP!

SHANE BATTIER

PAUL DRESCHNACK, MD

Shane Battier is a former American professional basketball player, sports analyst, and philanthropist who is known for his work with his Take Charge Foundation. Co-founded with his wife, Heidi Ufer Battier, Shane has empowered underprivileged youth by offering scholarships, mentorship programs, and educational resources through their foundation. This organization has enabled countless individuals to access higher education and achieve their dreams. He also extends his generosity to youth sports, health, and wellness initiatives.

Battier’s commitment to community service sets an inspiring example for athletes and philanthropists alike. Beyond his basketball career, his legacy is defined by his dedication to making a positive and lasting impact on society through meaningful philanthropic endeavors.

Paul Dreschnack, MD is a prominent figure in the medical field, renowned not only for his medical expertise but also for his commitment to philanthropy. Dr. Dreschnack has worked in the poorest regions of India, giving new hope and life to children who had none. Along with 11 other Plastic Surgeons in the New York area, they operated on about 300,000 children free of charge.

Children with birth defects in India suffer from the deformities themselves, but there is also social exclusion, unemployment, and limited marriage possibilities. Estimates are as high as 10,000,000 lives were impacted by free surgery for these children. His dedication to philanthropy has played a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare access and quality, ultimately benefiting patients and medical professionals alike.

Each year, our Media Partners give out more than 1,000 Jefferson Awards. They choose one recipient to represent the very best of their community, who is then nominated to receive one of the five national Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis Jefferson Awards for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Local Communities.

JOE ARCINIEGA • LAREDO MORNING TIMES

Joe Arciniega turned his pain from losing his father to Alzheimer’s disease in 2015 into purpose and leads with a sense of urgency. Since 2017, Joe has been committed to fighting for the end of Alzheimer’s and has had the opportunity to work with several local community Alzheimer’s organizations. Through his work, that led to Joe being named as the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) Advocacy Forum Chair in 2023. The AIM Advocacy Forum is the nation’s premier Alzheimer’s disease advocacy event. He has been a guest speaker and panelist for the Hispanic and Black Congressional Caucuses in Washington D.C. and has presented before government officials in Japan, China, Germany, and the UK, as well as for the Chicago United Leadership Forum, and much more.

JAY ALLEY • WACH

Born and raised on the banks of the Saluda River, John Alley began canoeing at a young age. The son of a pastor and a special education teacher, Alley always had a natural affinity for all things water and helping others and after spending years running his own construction business, Jay wanted more out of life. He wanted to do something for others and more specifically around boating and nature. That is where he came up with the idea of Canoeing For Kids. What began in 1994 as a small nonprofit set out to help disadvantaged kids learn about water safety, how to boat with canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and rafts, has since gone from helping 200 youth in the first year to over 20,000 kids over the last 20 years.

DON BREDLE • WQOW

Even in retirement, Don Bredle doesn’t slow down. He has made it his mission to help care for his community and treats his volunteer service like a full-time job. Through delivering meals to those in need and using his carpentry skills to help local churches and charities rebuild and remodel local homes free of charge to maintaining the grounds at his church, Don lends a hand whenever he can. He has also volunteered his time with We Care au Claire which focuses on giving free school supplies to children, and Beacon House which addresses the issue of family homelessness. He has spent time delivering Meals on Wheels for over 6 years, worked with Habitat for Humanity for over 35 years, and is currently learning to speak Ukrainian with hopes of traveling there to help them rebuild after the war ends.

MARIAH CALAGIONE • DELAWARE TODAY/DELAWARE BUSINESS TIMES

As co-founder of Dogfish Head Brewery, Mariah Calagione wanted to use her success to lean in to help her neighbors. Through her fundraising efforts and her involvement with various organizations throughout Delaware, Mariah has made a tremendous impact for people across her state. Not only does she serve on local school boards and volunteer with a variety of local organizations, but she serves as a producer for the nonprofit Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival that supports the arts in her community. Most recently, she founded the Red Wagon Calagione Family Foundation, which has granted over $3.7 million dollars to organizations and people in the community.

LEO CHAPUT • WXOW

The Riverside Park Rotary Lights Display has been a holiday tradition in La Crosse, WI for almost 30 years thanks in large part to the efforts of Leo Chaput. The now-retired boilermaker has designed, welded, and fixed the displays, putting in an estimated 9,000 volunteer hours since he began his involvement more than two decades ago. Seeing the joy it brings to the community inspires Leo to give back and he knows that through his help and expertise, he makes a difference across the town. It’s safe to say every display has been either created or fixed by Leo at one time or another. Thanks to his work and the efforts of many volunteers willing to help, Rotary Lights is the highlight of the holiday season for the community.

ANDRE COLLINS, SR. • WBOC

After playing professional basketball in Europe, Andre Collins, Sr. wanted to give back to his community.

He saw a need to invest in the youth and set them on a path forward and from there he began refurbishing the basketball courts in the underprivileged community where he grew up. He also started training young athletes at his gym and hosts several basketball camps, giving scholarships to those unable to afford to attend. Most recently he founded Project Xposure which empowers the youth through mentorship, athletics, and trade. His biggest event is the annual Dre Day, which promotes awareness to bullying, gun violence and drugs, and includes a celebrity basketball game with NBA stars.

DR. MIKE COMLY • KCWY

Retirement looks a little different than how Dr. Mike Comly envisioned for himself. After retiring from his private practice, he now spends his days volunteering at the Downtown Clinic in Laramie, WY. He admits it was not his original intention, however after making a promise to a fellow colleague, Dr. Dan Cline, just before Cline passed away, Mike agreed to take over his spot at the Downtown Clinic. 20 years later, he is still going strong and continues to volunteer for those who can’t afford medical care. With his kind-hearted approach to medical care, Mike has made an impact on his entire community ensuring a better tomorrow.

MARTY CORMACK • KXLT

While affordable housing remains elusive to many, Marty Cormack is driven to make a difference.

Through his work through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul he has been able to help those in his community in need of a place to live no matter the cost. Under his leadership, the Society has given out more than $1 million in housing assistance over the last four years to those in need in Rochester, MN. The goal is to help all who ask for it and provide guidance and support for those in need. Along with leading the group, Marty advocates for those less fortunate at ongoing city council meetings and community gatherings to increase access to housing.

RON DUMAS • ROTARY CLUB OF CINCINNATI

While working inside the juvenile court system, Ron Dumas saw a need to mentor youth, and started “Reaching Out For Kids” in 1997. For more than a quarter of a century, he has been helping at-risk youth build stronger futures through golfing. The program focuses on character, respect, integrity, good sportsmanship, and a commitment to personal growth and achievement. It serves more than 350 kids annually and has served more than 5,000 children over the years. Ron has also helped more than 200 youth obtain college scholarships to continue their education and help them reach their full potential.

REV ROLAND GORDON • KPIX-TV / KCBS AM RADIO

Over 43 years ago at Ingleside Presbyterian Church, Reverend Roland Gordon first posted a picture of Muhammad Ali on the wall of the church’s gym to serve as a reminder that he too could make a difference in the world despite racial challenges. Through the years, he just kept adding pictures and eventually covered the entire church and this collage became the largest black historical mural of its kind in the nation. He also started “Ingleside Community Center,” an afterschool nonprofit at the church in 1986 where Kindergarteners up through eighth graders could come to the center for basketball, tutoring, and technology programs. He also established a food bank, which for 16 years has been feeding a hundred people a month with grocery donations from local stores.

KAREN HILLARY-IGLESIA • WHEC

Together with her husband, Karen Hillary-Iglesia founded PrimeTime585 with the belief that teenage years are the prime time to promote compassion, tolerance, and cultural sensitivity. Her nonprofit showcases the talent of a diverse population of local athletes and theater students, which builds their confidence and promotes the kids’ talents to others in the community. It also encourages them to volunteer and engage in community service, while bringing them together to provide necessities to those in need through food, toys, and coat drives. The organization also provides a bridge between youth and law enforcement by connecting them through the sports camps that PrimeTime585 runs.

LUEKINNA HODGES • WQAD

After a traumatizing childhood, Luekinna Hodges, known as Kinna, was determined to change her future and follow her calling to help others. Four years ago, she founded Kinna’s House of Love, which offers support to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse. She works to create community and hosts family-friendly events throughout the year to help bring women and children together. Families find her space, also known as Kinna’s Corner, as a safe haven, and she is known as “another mother” to the women and children she helps. Currently, she is advocating for change at the state level, pushing a petition to strengthen security measures at childcare facilities in Iowa.

BRENT KING • WDTV

Brent King wanted to give at-risk youth in Marion County, West Virginia a second chance, a new start, and a better future. To accomplish this, he was instrumental in the creation of the Marion County Teen Court Board. The program offers a second chance for youth between ages 11 and 18 who are alleged to have committed an act of delinquency. Youth who come before the Teen Court Board appear before a teen jury.

The prosecutor and defense attorneys are also teenagers. After opening statements and deliberation, the teen court determines a sentence that includes mandatory community service and participation in future Teen Courts. Charges against the defendant are dismissed upon successful completion of the program.

BRANDT KINGSLEY • WPMT

Brandt Kingsley had the opportunity to turn his love of bicycling into a vehicle for breaking down barriers of urban relations and help combat violence across his community. In 2017, he started Pedal 4 Peace, offering a safe space in downtown York City, Pennsylvania for people to unite around cycling while inspiring development. In just a few short years, he went from seeing a few kids a day to over 100 youth daily and provides offerings such as a junior mechanics program that allow the kids to go on field trips, attend camps, and even participate in BMX competitions. Brandt has not only helped those in his community, but the nonprofit has since reached and improved the lives of youth across 19 states and three continents.

ED MONFORT • THE LIMA NEWS/WLIO/UNITED WAY OF LIMA

Ed Monfort has served his community as a Police Officer, a Minister, and a Counselor, and for over 50 years, he has gone well beyond those roles to make a difference in his community. He developed and leads a 12-step program, the Celebrate Recovery Inside (CRI) Program, to the Lima Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution. He also worked with the community to create the first soccer program in the city and Roller Hockey Outdoor Rink. For individuals who struggle with transportation, Ed established the Wheelhouse Project which matches these individuals with a bicycle. Ed has been a mentor, sponsor, accountability partner and coach to many who have struggled with addiction, poverty, trauma, violence, and other adversities.

DR. BETH NEWTON • WJBF

After her son was killed in a home invasion in 2016, Dr. Beth Newton started the nonprofit “Something for Alex” as a way to honor his life and find purpose following his death. The organization’s mission is to change the world one random act of kindness at a time. They work with the community to hold their annual 5K trail run and 1-mile fun run that provides local scholarships, partner with the local children’s hospital and homeless shelters by holding toy and clothing drives, as well as their work raising money for pediatric cancer and other causes. They recently started a farmer’s market that provides the community with local healthy food and allows those with SNAP benefits to double their purchasing power.

PHILIP PALMER • WCIV

Phillip Palmer served in the United States Marines and was wounded during a mission in Iraq. After returning home and working through his own recovery, Phillip saw how transformational his own fitness programs were to help ease the pains of post-traumatic stress disorder. The struggles of his recovery and his commitment to help fellow veterans with PTSD led him to found “WarriorWOD.” The organization provides veterans with a gym and nutrition coach in their area at no cost. It aims to give veterans a path to healing and prevent suicide and substance abuse deaths. The program has demonstrated significant improvements in Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms for Veterans.

KRISTI SCHILLER • KBTX

Growing up, Kristi Schiller learned that giving back should be a way of life and that it was as much about donating money as it was time, ideas, and rolling up your sleeves and doing the work. That idea has stuck with her and over the years she has championed dozens of causes that focus on children, mental health, the arts, law enforcement, and academia. She is most known for founding K9s4COPSs after she witnessed the barriers and roadblocks citizens faced in donating K9s to their local law enforcement. Since 2011, Schiller’s organization has arranged for the addition of 281 K9 officers that have assisted in the removal of billions of dollars of contraband from the community, school security, and public safety.

Jenna Shaffer started 91 Place, a transitional home for unhoused youth ages 18-24, as not just a place for those without shelter, but a place for them to establish or reestablish healthy connections with others. Through transitional housing, life-skills training, mentorship, and workforce-development programs, paired with mental-health services and trauma-responsive care, 91 Place residents receive wraparound services to provide a comprehensive response to housing insecurity. Youth are welcomed into a caring family and invited on a healing journey to empower them to become independent, contributing members of society, so that they can turn away from unhealthy coping mechanisms and break the cycle of poverty.

LUKE SHARP • WPDE

After a friend and fellow surfer was tragically injured in an accident that left him a quadriplegic, Luke Sharp was inspired by his friend’s ability to learn a new way of surfing and created the Adaptive Surf Project in Horry County, SC. Since 2013, Luke has organized events which have allowed people with a range of disabilities to surf on specially built surfboards and reconnect with the ocean or experience the thrill of surfing. This includes designing specialty surfboards, installing beach matting, and even training adaptive surf teams. In addition, Luke now serves on the board of Coastal Adaptive Sports, which facilitates nearly 100 similar events a year including adaptive surfing, adaptive biking, wheelchair basketball, track and field events, and many more social events.

Jenny Sparano is a member of the all-volunteer board of Kelly’s Angels, a charity that provides fun grants to children who have lost a parent to cancer or other illnesses and helps families struggling through the cancer treatment process. Distributing approximately $65,000 a year to local children and families, Jenny’s work as vice president is instrumental to the organization and her behind the scenes work helps makes the organization’s work possible. Jenny is involved in every aspect of the organization including awarding scholarships to local graduating high school seniors who have faced adversity. Most recently, she conceived of Hugs for Ukraine, a Kelly’s Angels effort to provide “Angel Hug” grants to Ukrainian children who have relocated to the Capital Region.

After his 30+ year career at Corning Incorporated, Dr. Stephen Tong has dedicated his retirement years to educating and showing youth that science is not just important, but is exciting, interesting, and fun.

Stephen has organized tours at Corning’s Sullivan Park as part of the Summer Science Experience, helped students participate in Science Fairs, recruited fellow scientists to go into classrooms, and has developed entire science programs for the youth in and around the Corning School district. Dr. Tong’s work has impacted more than 2,000 students across all six of his programs.

Inspired by her own struggles earlier in her life, Dental Hygienist Michelle Vacha left her private practice and started Senior Mobile Dental in 2006. Providing heavily discounted dental services to nursing homes and seniors, Michelle wanted to ensure that they would be able to access affordable dental care through her nonprofit. Since then, Michelle saw a greater need for all individuals of all ages in need of similar care. She worked to establish two additional dental offices called Community Dental Health and now her offices are fully equipped with dentists, oral surgeons, denture technicians, dental hygienists, and supporting staff that provide a wide range of dental services to low-income individuals while still providing high-quality care.

After personally being touched by cancer, Arnold Swanson, Julie Waldvogel, and Denise Behm made it their personal mission to give back and help others going through similar circumstances. Using their knowledge and life experiences when it comes to facing catastrophic illness, they have dedicated themselves to serving as officers of a local nonprofit, Swanson Fundraising. The organization’s mission is to raise money for adults and children battling cancer and help with medical costs and other needs. Whether it is their annual dinner and raffle at Chet and Emil’s or supporting a cookout--the fundraising group is always looking for ways to lend a helping hand. Their nonprofit has donated $250,000 to families in Central Wisconsin.

RITA & KEN WOLF • KCRG

No strangers to hard work and giving back, Ken and Rita Wolf have spent the last five years volunteering for Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS) through their RV Volunteer program. As true snowbirds, each year they spend October through April in various Southern states and have chosen to help others even during their retirement years, specifically those who have been affected by natural disasters. The bulk of their service work has been in partnership with Camp Courageous in Monticello. This year-round campground provides recreational and respite care opportunities for individuals with special needs and their families. The Wolfs have donated thousands of hours to the camp, from weeding the nearly 400 acres of land and cutting trees for campfires, to assisting at community events.

2023 RECOGNITION CHAMPIONS RECIPIENTS: TAYA DIANNA - NEW CASTLE COUNTY GOVERNMENT

After moving to Delaware in 2001, Taya Dianna wanted to create a community for herself and decided to push herself to try something new. She learned about her local area’s adult tennis lessons and set out to make a few new friends, learn a new skill, and enjoy the outside. 20 years later, Taya has made a great impact on tennis in her local community and has since gone on to become the captain of the recreational leagues, leads the Impact TeamTennis, has hosted a US Open bus trip for over 17 years, and volunteers with Tennis in the Streets that has enabled inner-city youth to learn a new sport and work and mentor others to keep them on the path to success. She runs the Delaware Tennis Facebook page with over 1,600 followers to bring together her favorite sport and community.

MARA FIORIO – MOLINA HEALTHCARE

During a summer internship with the Family Nutrition Program in Northern Virginia, Mara had the opportunity to work with juveniles at a nearby detention center, educating them about nutrition and using hands-on demonstrations to educate the importance of proper eating. Through that internship, Mara saw the lack of knowledge surrounding proper nutrition and began her career in educating others on ways to improve their lives with healthy foods. In 2017, she completed a dietetic internship at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan and was able to bring her stateside experience to this island population.

Currently, she is working in the outpatient setting providing nutrition + diabetes education counseling.

DR. TRESMAINE GRIMES – PACE UNIVERSITY

Serving as a Departmental Dean at Pace University, Dr. Tresmaine Grimes has dedicated her career to improving the lives and mental health of others. In 2004, she had the opportunity to join a delegation of American mental health professionals who traveled to South Africa to study the impact on mental health of the South African population as it relates to apartheid-related trauma, sexual assault, and HIV/AIDS. The impact on her was astounding and continued to make great strides in her work at the university. In 2012, she established a nonprofit organization focused on supporting local groups that assist women recovering from domestic abuse while providing ministry work to women and men that allows them to grow spiritually and set them on the best path forward.

RHONDA HARPER - CITIZENS ENERGY GROUP

Serving those who struggle to make ends meet is something that Rhonda Harper believes passionately in. On top of her 35-year career with Citizen’s Energy, Rhonda has been a tireless advocate for people struggling to pay utility bills, obtain food for themselves and their families, and ensure many other basic living necessities. Rhonda is an active member of the Board of Directors for Child Advocates, the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition, Citizens Warm Heart Warm Home Foundation™, Southeast Neighborhood Development Corp. and Connect2Help 211. In addition, Rhonda has been a leader of Indianapolis community redevelopment efforts through Citizens’ Investment Collaboration on Neighborhoods (ICON).

DR. KAREN HUDMON - PURDUE UNIVERSITY

Losing a mother is unimaginable and for Karen Hudmon, this became her reality after her mother passed from a hard-fought battle with lung cancer. Dr. Hudmon realized during this time that early interventions in treatment with those associated with tobacco use were more likely to reduce negative outcomes such as the one her mother faced. Through her research, she identified a need to address the gaps in care, especially for individuals from under-resourced communities disproportionately affected by tobacco use.

Since then, Dr. Hudmon has spent the last two decades working to create treatments that are sustainable and have significant societal impact.

NORAH NICHOLLS – DELOITTE

As a former Junior Achievement student, Norah Nicholls remembers the a-ha moment when exposure to their financial literacy and other programs sparked her interest in business. Because of that experience, Norah understands the positive impact Junior Achievement’s programs can have on youth, particularly women and those from underserved communities. She is passionate about making this pathway to education available for all young people. Now, as a longtime member of Junior Achievement Northern California’s Board and Executive Committee, Norah helps to ensure their work can continue to inspire and prepare young people for success. Norah has also co-chaired Deloitte’s Bay Area Workplace Giving Campaign that raises over $1 million for local nonprofits each year and demonstrates the importance of giving back to our communities.

DALE SHEDD – DONEGAL INSURANCE

As a Marine Corps veteran and former police officer, Dale Shedd delivers daily on his promise of being there when it matters most for Donegal’s policyholders. Dale is a beacon within his community and provides his energetic support through his work as the volunteer announcer for Prince Avenue Christian School’s Wolverines varsity sports, and as a volunteer within his church. He finds importance in serving as a role model for youth, specifically those who are young athletes and work to help set them on the path to greatness. Those around him have shared that his kind heart and willingness to go the extra mile leave anyone who meets him with a smile.

SHARNAE SMITH – BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTON

As someone living with Lupus, Sharnae Smith knows all too well the impact this incurable and debilitating disease can have on those living with the same diagnosis. Sharnae chose to turn her pain into purpose and began advocating for those facing hardships related to their Lupus diagnosis. From medical debt and access to vital medications to resources needed for minorities to participate in critical clinical trials, she set out to dedicate her life to advocating and fundraising for better options for her Lupus community.

Most recently, Sharnae’s recent lobbying in Congress provided the Lupus Foundation of America and the University of Alabama an opportunity to conduct a clinical trial for African American Lupus patients in Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, and Kentucky to better understand the effects that medications have on Lupus patients.

Ashley Ridge High School SIA Team in South Carolina received the Gold Award in recognition of their work and collaboration with local elementary schools to host a mentoring event for fifth graders. Their event reached over 400 students via lessons on friendships, conflict-resolution, growth mindset, and success in school. By interacting with high school students, answering their questions, and engaging in activities, the fifth graders were able to ease their worries heading into the difficult transition to middle school. During the school year, their team engaged in 1,300 hours of service and impacted a total of 1,482 individuals through various projects and fundraisers.
