Infection and sepsis in the Dutch acute care chain: opportunities for optimisation of care

Gelukkig gaan infecties meestal vanzelf over. Echter, soms wordt een infectie ernstiger en wanneer organen daardoor niet meer goed functioneren noemen we dat sepsis. In dit proefschrift werd het traject van patiënten met een ernstige infectie door de Nederlandse acute zorgketen heen onderzocht en werd specifiek aandacht besteed aan waar dit - wereldwijd geroemde - zorgsysteem nog verder verbeterd kan worden.

De studies lieten zien dat dat patiënten met ernstige infecties aanwezig zijn in de gehele acute zorgketen en dat huisartsen een belangrijke rol vervullen. Verschillende parameters worden gebruikt bij het besluit om al dan niet naar het ziekenhuis te verwijzen, waaronder de medische voorgeschiedenis van patiënten, vitale waarden (zoals de bloeddruk en ademfrequentie) en het pluis-/niet pluisgevoel. Helaas worden vitale waarden niet consistent gemeten en is ook de documentatie van sepsis en ernst van de ziekte nog te verbeteren. Om de zorg in de toekomst te kunnen blijven verbeteren, verdienen deze items aandacht van alle betrokken zorgprofessionals.
