Two surveys across 45 countries with teachers who participated in the campaign between 2016-2017.

This fantastic global campaign celebrates and inspires outdoor learning and play. The next Outdoor Classroom Days are November 1, 2018 and May 23, 2019 when thousands of schools and millions of children from around the world will take lessons outside and share their experience. Why should you?

Because we must make outdoor play and learning an essential part of every day: at school and at home. The good news is that there are a growing number of schools worldwide that recognise how outdoor learning and play is critical to helping children reach their full potential.

Furthermore, outdoor learning improves children’s physical and mental health and leads to a lifelong connection with nature.

Project Dirt asked teachers who have taken part in previous Outdoor Classroom Days about the impact of taking children outdoors.

Engage with students about the planned trip, activity or excursion to get them excited and prepared. Tell them how it’s relevant to their learning; what skills they’ll get to practice and what opportunities they’ll have for fun.

If students will be travelling somewhere new or strenuous physical activity will be involved, prepare them with in-class or homework activities they can do make them feel comfortable and build reasonable expectations.

Remember that changes to the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014, and health and safety regulations mean some things may require more processing time.

Notify parents about fees, volunteer requests and permission slips.

Incentivise form returns or any other housekeeping required from parents or students. Stickers, awards, ‘first dibs’ on rooms, or seats, etc., may help your cause!

Create a ‘bad weather’ plan, including alternative transport or activities. Choose your date carefully and let families know as soon as possible of any itinerary changes.

Specify special dietary requirements and health concerns.

88 percent of teachers globally said that children are happier after playing outdoors, and 89 percent said the same when they learn outdoors.

Whether you’ve signed your school up or not, there’s always a reason to take students outside and celebrate the environment and learning.

There are 47 Kiwi schools that have decided to head outdoors on this particular day, but most of those are in Auckland and the North.

We should encourage all schools to embrace their inner adventure and set out to spend an entire school day learning and playing outdoors.

Even if your school is already able to take your students outdoors regularly, why not use the day to celebrate what you are doing and inspire others.

Check out Outdoor Classroom Day online: there’s a free resource with ideas and encouragement for schools to share what they do outside of the classroom, along with two million other kids around the world on the same day.

This concept has lots of fantastic lesson and topic ideas from a broad range of experts and organisations around the world.

JUMP Indoor Trampoline Park’s aim is to motivate and enable young people in our community to make positive health related choices that contribute to healthy living.

JUMP believes that communities, schools and parents need to work together to help develop the attitudes and skills of our younger generation.

We believe that it is extremely important for our students to develop a critical mind which will enable them to make consistent health related choices.

Here at JUMP we are constantly developing new and innovative ways to provide a safe, inclusive and engaging platform for students to learn in, through and about movement. In saying this, JUMP has designed an adaptable unit of work which is specifically aimed at providing young students with further opportunity to explore what being healthy means to themselves, of other

people and society.

Throughout this unit students will have the opportunity to investigate their communities’ products and programmes which promote health and nutrition.

They will engage physically with the community through participating and examining JUMP New Zealand’s first trampoline park. Students will experience a range of different opinions and messages around health-related choices. Through these different messages students will develop a fresh perspective and an open mind.

This unit will help students to look towards the future and establish sustainable futurefocused minds that could potentially contribute to a significant positive shift in how they view and contribute to self, others and society.

Let’s go fly a kite...

Be a Mary Poppins and propel your learners far beyond the classroom. To do this now is more important than ever before. With horrific stats like one-in-eight primary school children getting less than 30 minutes of outdoor playtime each day, the effort it takes to plan outdoor activities

is well worth it. Think big and small: what can you do on school grounds? What can you do in your neighbourhood? What can you do in your wider community?

What can you do in your region?

Island? Country? World? There’s an infinite possibility when it comes to travel and active learning, but there’s no such thing as an infinite budget and planning, of course, takes time.

Budget for the big things but don’t forget the little ways you can integrate outdoor learning in your classroom and school.

There are also plenty of suppliers,

services and organisations that will assist schools in the planning stage and with budgeting. Would you like to plan a trip or an activity that’s community-driven, experience-driven, subjectdriven, or a combination of all three?

Why is venturing outside such an important thing to do?

It’s one curiosity that school has historically stifled. The ‘sit still and shut up’ philosophy of Victorian society very much bled through the generations, and it’s

only very recently that education has decided to make a huge shift.

Perhaps it’s the realisation that children are now spending more time inside than any generation previous, or perhaps it’s the rebellious spirit of this generation of teachers who’ve decided to rethink what school can look like…

Outdoor learning is not only being eroded by our children’s’ reliance on hand held technology but also because of the pressures of standardised testing and academic rigour.
