AN ODE TO SISTERHOOD:

Finding Peace, Love, Authenticity

by Jackie Scully M.Ed. | History & Psychology Teacher, Podcast Host, Author In college I joined a sorority and that would put me on a trajectory of duality until I was 40 years old.

There were many wonderful areas of growth that came out of joining a sorority, but this is when I started to look at myself in a very different way and I did not handle it well. Just like the education system, I am not singling out the one sorority I joined, but would acknowledge the social system of Greek life as a place that can be very beneficial in certain aspects, but also be a system that focuses on conformity and comparison, and for me that really put me on a path of hiding the real Jackie for a very long time.

As soon as I joined I started to compare myself to many other women. I started to see there was potential to be “popular”and I slowly noticed I wanted to change myself to fit in and also stand out. I don’t know the singular moment that led to this decision but I wanted to get skinny and I wanted to be sexy. I started to not eat every meal and then I wanted to restrict if I did eat full meals so I was developing anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa at the same time. I never got treatment for this, but there was a point where I was 100 pounds and very unhealthy to the point that I could have been hospitalized just for this eating disorder. I am not saying the sorority or my particular sorority per se caused this, but it was the first time I noticed myself as different and I wanted to control something and I wanted to try to be the one that was the most attractive. even with others but with myself. Once I got to a desired weight and look I then noticed I got a lot of attention in good and bad ways. It was feeding my eating disorder. I struggled with that for the rest of college and even after college.

I have not fully accepted my body until recently. It took me doing a lot of inner work and health and wellness regiments to finally get to a point where I just want to feel good in my body. I don’t care what I look like. Aging can make body image worse for some people, but for me it allows me to have grace with myself and just be. Now in my forties, I really have accepted all of me. But that mask I put on in college was something that became part of my identity for almost twenty years and it is not until right now that I am fully admitting that.

What I gained though from my time in a sorority was some real friendships I still have today, and some that faded away. I gained my voice and leadership skills. I did come out of my shell and gained confidence in speaking up about issues that were important to me. In that time I helped to organize a group of college students to a Women’s March in Washington D.C. I was Vice President of Recruitment and I enjoyed helping the sorority grow and move in a new direction. These areas of my growth were truly part of my evolution. There was light and shadow in my college experience. I just carried a lot of shadow for a long time and once the pandemic hit that is when I needed to face that shadow head on.

You can carry so much shadow with you in your life since it becomes part of your subconscious and identity. It takes a lot of inner work and doing difficult emotional healing to reveal those shadow aspects and then work on them. I am still on that healing journey. I think we all are on that journey our whole lives if we decide we want to do that work.

I never had biological sisters. I always wanted a connection to a community of females. There is something about the sisterly bond that I desired.

I went through many shallow friendships and all I really wanted was a pack of women who were like soul sisters. I did not fully get that from the sorority, but there was an essence of it. I did have a group of women that empowered themselves and taught me to love me and share my voice. I was still behind a mask. I did not fully show myself at that time and for many years to come.

When I turned forty years old and stepped into my authenticity I started to attract real sisters. Today I can say I am starting to build a network of soul sisters. Women of all ages, some younger and some older. Age doesn’t matter; our souls connect. We genuinely support one another and see each other for who we truly are in our own skin that we honor.

I now love all of me, all my shadow and light, and these women do too. I am fortunate to be part of many communities where I feel that sense of sisterhood, and one such community is More Joy that Cindi Cohn created based on her More Joy book.

We have built a beautiful web of sisterhood together. My heart is full. My cup is overflowing. I am now able to give so much more love and service to others. I still honor the sorority I was in for what it was in college. I took away a lot of beauty from that time and those bonds. The friendships I kept from that time are very much real. I was just not ready at that time to fully accept myself. I had a lot of growing up and self work to do.

Today I could fully embrace being in that sisterhood and accept myself in that network, and not compare myself to others and put myself into a box. For

the women out there looking for your sisters…we are here! Let us keep supporting each other and standing up for one another. Women who support each other in community is empowerment.

The Anyway Way

by Christa Haberstock | Speaker Agent, Manager and Therapist behind the bar, and with money he raised holding events in local venues, he traveled to Darfur, Sudan. There, he began installing water systems for victims of government-supported genocide.

Doc had no intention of going to far-flung war-torn countries as a humanitarian. He knew how to fix motorcycles, not wells.

He went to Darfur anyway.

Since then, Hendley and his organization Wine To Water have radically transformed the process of bringing clean water to people in need anywhere in the world. To date, Wine To Water has dug, repaired, and sanitized drinking wells for nearly 2 million people in 53 countries.

In 2004, Doc Hendley did not dream of dedicating his life to humanitarian efforts in developing countries. Far from it, in fact. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a communications degree that he wasn’t sure how to use.

While bartending to pay the bills, he noticed the men and women sitting on the stools seemed to want to be part of something bigger. The 25-year-old Hendley got inspired

As a tattooed Harley-riding bartender with a communications degree and a tip jar, Doc had no idea what lay ahead for him. Doc answered the call anyway.

During her summer vacation of 2012, while relaxing in a hotel room with close friends, Benveet “Bean” Gill felt a sudden, stabbing pain in her spine. Moments later, she went numb from the waist down.

Bean began to rebuild her life and regain her strength. In 2014, she co-founded ReYu Paralysis Recovery Centre, a growing non-profit organization that reconnects the brain to the body, retrains the nervous system, and redefines what is possible for people with Spinal Cord Injuries and associated conditions.

Bean Gill had no warning, no preparation, and no knowledge of how to regain mobility after paralysis, never mind helping others to do the same.

She pushed forward anyway.

“The pain lasted only a few minutes, and then I couldn’t move my right leg,” Bean recalls. “I was paralyzed within 10 minutes.”

Unable to roll over, sit up, or get out of bed without help, she felt betrayed by her own body.

Gill faced two choices: Give up or keep going.

While she grieved the loss of the life that she had, Bean faced the sudden reality of life in a wheelchair.

Weeks, months, and years passed. Many times, she was tempted to succumb to despair and give up.

She pushed ahead anyway.

At the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece, Carly Patterson became only the second American woman to win an Olympic allaround gold medal. It was the first of its kind in a non-boycotted Olympic Games.

At 16, Carly was the first American woman to win the title in 20 years, taking home silver medals for the balance beam and the Women’s team competition.

After graduating high school and college, she began to look for her “what’s next.” Never one to shy away from a challenge, Carly aggressively pursued a singing career.

“I figured I had already won Gold at the Olympics,” she mused. “How hard could a Grammy be? Turns out pretty hard.”

She went for Grammy gold anyway. It wasn’t meant to be.

ing clean water, hundreds have regained mobility after paralysis, and thousands have been inspired to go from their “best to better.”

The dangerous lie these stories can whisper to us is that the main characters are just “built different.”

They would, however, disagree, and I know this because they are my clients.

My career is in a niche of the events industry that books, manages, and represents professional corporate speakers and entertainers.

Day One of my new, niche, hard-to-describe job introduced me to the Built Different crowd. portunities she pursued after retiring gave Carly a unique perspective on embracing true success, finding lasting fulfillment, and addressing the question: What do you do when your most significant accomplishment is behind you?

Like many of us, Doc Hendley, Bean Gill, and Carly Patterson faced insurmountable obstacles. They feared failure, faced discouragement, and fought the temptation to quit.

When offered the choice to give up or keep going, they chose to move forward anyway, in any way necessary.

This is the spirit of The Anyway Way. It is the core principle of progress.

Your Life Is Worth Climbing For Kelley Tyan | Keynote speaker, Author, Podcast Host, Christian Coach Do you believe your life is really worth climbing for? Or are you just trying to get by, day after day?

in pain, but never showed it on the outside.

She wore her smile and had the most incredible outlook on life.

I’ve had some real tramatic seasons in my life where I didn’t want to climb at all. I was stuck in the pity party of breast cancer, losing my mother, learning my dad had a rare blood cancer, and the list goes on.

My mother had faith like no one else I’ve ever seen. She always carried her Bible with her and she always started her mornings in prayer.

These moments in life can become shaky, even isolating because of the pain, and often fearful for the future.

I am here to share with you, that, no matter what you are going through in your life right now, or what you have been through, there is hope.

I grew up as an only child, with two of the most amazing parents in the world. I was a happy kid, and I loved people, always wanted them to be happy in my presence.

This was how it was inside my home, a very happy place.

However, my precious mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was born so throughout my life, she was always 20 EveryDayLifeMagazine.com

I knew she was different right from the start.

As I grew up and entered adulthood, life became challenging, as we all know it, and sometimes it does not go the way we have planned.

When I found out I had breast cancer it was two months before I opened the doors to my fitness business, called Kelley’s Bootcamp for Women. I had been planning this business for a long time, and I was super excited to lead women to become healthier in their bodies, as well as in their minds.

However, being diagnosed with breast cancer was a battle I had to face.

After my “cry” and pity party, I decided to focus forward on my plan which was to

show up for the women I dreamed of leading.

At that point in my life, I always had faith, as I grew up knowing God, so leaning into Him fully was exactly what I did.

This was a choice.

I told myself over and over that if my mother could get through life and the constant pain she was in, I could too.

I began to face my giant and climb one step upward every single day.

Breast cancer tried to make me feel unworthy, shameful, ugly, and defeated.

There were even moments I was terrified because of all the unknowns ahead of me. Not knowing if it would come back, not knowing if it would get worse.

This was definitely not an easy journey and some days were really hard and challenging.

I would wake up in the middle of the night and evil thoughts would try to penetrate my mind, but that is when we all have to choose whether we let those thoughts take us down or, we keep climbing and fight back with a big bold faith.

When you take on a God focused mindset, you can get through anything.

I say this with boldness because I realized that when my mind becomes “me focused” that’s when I tend to spiral out in a negative way.

I knew that in order to stay above water, and

not feel like I was drowning, I had to make a faith shift and believe bigger that I would be healed.

So everyday, I focused my thoughts on God and His supernatural healing power.

choose to rise above adversity, guided by the conviction that every uphill battle is an opportunity for growth, and every trial is a testament of the trial of faith over despair.

I began to show up differently.

Showing up for yourself, in the midst of trials, is one way to feel empowered.

The more I showed up instead of sinking in sorrow, the more courage I had to keep going.

Every single day I prayed for strength to keep my head up and to focus on Godly thoughts, not my own.

I believed my life was worth climbing for, and I believe yours is too. God created you on purpose, for a purpose, and giving up or throwing the towel in, is not an option, if you believe this.

Faith became my anchor, and developing an unwavering strength which only came from God.

The Bicycle: A Christmas Story Sonny Melendrez | Author, Motivational Speaker

In 5th grade at St. Michael’s School, a stone’s throw from downtown San Antonio, my daily routine involved gathering my books as the 3 o’clock bell chimed, followed by a stroll through town, taking in the window displays, and eventually hopping onto the Nolan Street bus for the ride home.

It was an ordinary school day afternoon in late October when the magic happened.

As I walked past the department store on the corner of Alamo and Commerce Streets in Alamo Plaza, I couldn’t believe my eyes. In the store’s main window stood the most beautiful bicycle I’d ever seen. A jet-black frame and fenders contrasted elegantly with the rich red leather-like seat, matching rubber handle grips adorned with plastic streamers, and the dazzling white headlight completed the package.

“Custom Deluxe” was emblazoned on the chain guard. It was a sight to behold, but it came with a hefty price tag: $24.95 – a small fortune in those days.

I could do nothing but daydream, picturing

myself cruising through the neighborhood while passersby showered me with compliments, my little brother Ricky perched on the rear passenger seat, clinging to my waist.

When I got home, I enthusiastically shared the encounter with my mom, who, as she often did, listened with a smile. However, she gently explained that this extravagant bicycle was beyond our current means.

It was true.

As she always would offer a bit of hope, no matter the situation, she said, “One day, son. One day.”

Week after week, I returned to the store window, gazing longingly at the bicycle.

Then, on Christmas morning, there it was!

I can still see it parked in front the refrigerator in our tiny kitchen.

I stood speechless, my mouth wide open.

Was this a dream? Would I really ride this new chariot through the neighborhood,

basking in the compliments I had envisioned?

After heartfelt thanks and hugs to my parents, I turned to Ricky and showed him where he would sit. He simply shook his head from side to side.

Unbeknownst to me, the day after I had excitedly described the bicycle to my mother, she had visited the store and put it on layaway with just a dollar.

My dream had become her dream.

For a 10-year-old, owning a new bicycle is akin to the excitement of getting your first car. And, for parents who go to great lengths to transform these youthful dreams

into reality, the resulting memories are not just priceless; they become enduring symbols of love and the unwavering power of dreams fulfilled, lighting the way for generations to come.
