Message from the Head of School, John Wray Dear Students, Parents, Staff and members of the Mulgrave community, I sometimes question how it is possible for me to write in every annual report that ‘this has been yet another outstanding year for Mulgrave’. Yet despite rigorously challenging my own perceptions and looking at the evidence available, I can think of no other phrase that once again better describes our achievements. In this annual report, you will get a high-level snapshot of some of the main achievements from this year, but while this is important, we need to understand that an outstanding year should be based on the outstanding experiences and successes of every one of our students. While I cannot guarantee that every single person has had a completely outstanding year, I know from our students, teachers, school leaders and parents that we are coming pretty close. That is impressive.

How is this year-on-year excellence possible I ask myself? The recipe is, I think, straightforward.

We have talented students who are committed to achieving their very best in all areas of school life; we have incredibly supportive parents who not only actively support their children’s learning, John Wray

but support education generally and their child’s school in a multitude of ways; and we have teachers and staff who care deeply about the children they teach, are highly skilled and go almost beyond the extra mile to ensure excellence. Add to the mix some outstanding leaders at all levels in our community, a resource-rich environment and a little Mulgrave stardust, it is not surprising that I can write ‘outstanding’ every year. We should be one of the best schools in the world.

However we must not be complacent. Voltaire and latterly Jim Collins wrote that ‘good is the enemy of great’ and if we add to this the context that the world is changing very rapidly then it is critical that a Mulgrave education continues to evolve and develop so that our students can be well prepared for the increasingly complex international world of the mid-21st century.

Mulgrave has a reputation for being forward-looking and innovative, and it is imperative that we continue to embrace these qualities going forward.

Congratulations to us all. Thank you for your commitment to our school and for contributing to the outstanding education that we provide.

Message from the Chair of the Board, Harry Wierenga Let me start by adding to John Wray’s words by thanking all of you, students, parents, staff and other members of the community for your support in making the past year such a successful one.

We have again seen our students achieve remarkable things in many areas of school life, including academically where our graduating class yet again achieved at a very high level in their final exams, allowing them to gain access to a very wide range of courses and universities across North America and beyond. While good academics sit at the heart of a good education, I am equally impressed with our students’ achievements in athletics, performing arts, service, outdoor education and other areas of school life.

For the Board, the main feature of the past year has been the completion of Phase I of the campus plan: the completion of the new Senior School project, the turf field and other facility renovations.

It is hard to believe just how quickly we have managed to make this project happen, and I would like to thank all those people who have worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition. Perhaps even more impressive than the beautiful facility we now have and the speed of construction has been the Harry Wierenga

outstanding way that the community has come together to raise the necessary funds. Our $31m goal has been achieved in rapid time and with a voluntary participation rate that is unheard of in fundraising circles. We are very fortunate that our families support our school so actively and in so many ways.

Given Mulgrave’s success, it is not surprising that we are full and oversubscribed and that our

attrition rate is at very low level. Although we have new facilities and demand for places from across the world is high, we do not have any plans to grow beyond our three class per grade model.

We have a strong sense of community and we wish to stay that way - an outstanding internationally focussed school serving families from across the world who live in this part of Vancouver.

I do want to use this opportunity to thank all those people who play leading roles in our school.

From class and grade parents, student leaders and staff curriculum leaders to the Board and members of the leadership team, we are grateful for your commitment, your example and your vision in continuing to provide our children with the best possible educational opportunities.

Mission, Values and Vision MEETING OUR MISSION The Mulgrave report to the community celebrates our achievements and demonstrates how we meet our mission as an educational institution. This annual publication is distributed to current parents, alumni, alumni families and staff. The 2014 – 2015 report covers the school year starting in September, 2014 and ending October, 2015. This report contains only a small selection of our collective achievements. We hope you enjoy reading it and welcome your feedback.

OUR MISSION AND VISION Inspiring Excellence in Education and Life By inspiring excellence – the continuous pursuit of personal best – in education and life, Mulgrave strives to equip lifelong learners to thrive in a culturally diverse and interdependent world and to embrace, with passion and confidence, their responsibility always to do their best to support others and to make a difference by serving their communities, both locally and in the world at large.

Who We Are • Mulgrave is a co-ed, non-denominational International Baccalaureate (IB) World School predominantly serving the North Shore of Vancouver.

• As an independent day school with a reputation for academic excellence, we offer the IB curriculum in Pre-K through to Grade 12 in a spectacular West Vancouver setting: - Primary Years Programme (Pre-K to Grade 5) - Middle Years Programme (Grade 6 to 10) - Diploma Programme (Grade 11 and 12) • Academic, athletic, artistic, and service opportunities comprise the four strands of a Mulgrave education, and they are enriched by a robust outdoor education programme that strengthens our students’ connection to and respect for our natural world.

Mulgrave 2020 Strategic Plan We are now entering the final phase of the existing strategic plan. A new strategic planning process is underway that will see a new plan being created by the end of 2016. We hope that all stakeholders will take the opportunity to contribute to this process later in the fall.

These are the main developments in the last 12-month period:

STRATEGIC GOAL #1 Personalisation of Learning, Support and Curriculum • Personalisation of Learning - Further improvement in the use of feedback to improve learning – Further use of standardised test and assessment data to improve learning – Further development of technology-enhanced learning, including the more widespread use of Google applications and the systematic development of digital literacy skills – Introduction of the new school year calendar to pace learning across a longer time frame with additional breaks • Personalisation of Curriculum – Further work on the systematic teaching of 21st century skills, especially research skills, social and emotional learning and digital literacy – The introduction of the MYP curriculum into Grade 6 – Introducing Music at Diploma level and ensuring further separation of higher and standard level courses • Personalisation of Support – Extension of the associate teacher scheme into Grades 3-6 – Enhancement of learning support and library staffing in the Junior School – Introduction and/or increase of specialist support in university counselling, art, languages, science and the library to support student learning

We are incredibly grateful for how much they do to make our community what it is today.

The Mulgrave Volunteer Parents Association (MVP) helps coordinate all parent volunteer, social and fundraising activities with the school. Working together with staff and parents, the MVP’s primary goal is to sustain Mulgrave’s sense of community and foster a broad-based spirit of participation. We are incredibly grateful to them for their generous donation of time and energy year upon year. Their involvement in so many aspects of school life strengthens the ties that make our community so strong.

IB DP RESULTS Mulgrave’s IB Diploma examination results were the best in school history and continue the trend of improved results year-on-year.

Fifty-five students presented as Diploma candidates and wrote the full range of IB examinations in May 2015. Ninety-six percent (96%) of our diploma candidates achieved the full IB Diploma.

Mulgrave School Alumni Association Our alumni are an integral part of the Mulgrave story and are influential in every chapter – past, present and future. The aim of the Alumni Relations programme is to foster lifelong connections and to celebrate the role our alumni have played, and continue to play, in shaping the active and vibrant Mulgrave School community. Guided by a steering committee made up of class representatives, the Alumni Association works to reconnect and strengthen the bonds between former students, families and teachers with the Mulgrave family.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE • Mulgrave’s first 10-year reunion with the Class of 2004 • Mulgrave’s second 10-year reunion with the Class of 2005, held at Mulgrave

Athletics Mulgrave offers a rich variety of athletic opportunities that enable our student-athletes in G3-12 to flourish in a number of individual and team sports. Through competition in the North Shore Secondary School Athletics Association (NSSSAA), Independent Schools Athletic Association (ISAA), and the Independent Schools Elementary Association (ISEA), our coaches support our student-athletes as they strive for athletic excellence and personal best. Strong emphasis is also placed on sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, character development, and respect for others.

Outdoor Education Mulgrave offers a vibrant Outdoor Education programme that engages all K-12 students in experiences outside of the classroom. We value the opportunity for students to make links between outdoor education and their classroom learning experiences. For this reason, we offer activities throughout the year for students to engage in these ‘experiential’ learning opportunities.

Through multi-sensory learning in nature-based contexts, Mulgrave’s Outdoor Education programme builds resilience in its students, along with an appreciation for our natural surroundings and the skills to actively participate in, and advocate for, our remarkable local region.

FALL CAMPS Starting with an overnight ‘camp’ at the school for Grade 3, the programme is designed to take students through a progression of physical and mental challenges that are authentic and age appropriate. The ability to face and overcome such challenges helps build self-esteem by demonstrating to participants that they can thrive in a variety of physical and social environments.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

This elective programme strives to provide students with the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of outdoor skills and knowledge. Through a two-year progression, students will advance from basic skills and experiences through to the application of more advanced skills and knowledge to the expedition environment in a safe and competent manner.

Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, this worldwide programme of distinction allows youths to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and to their community. At Mulgrave, students actively participate in adventurous journeys at all three award levels. These trips are planned, organised and implemented by the students.

Student Life: Service & Leadership CAS: CREATIVITY ACTIVITY SERVICE At the heart of Mulgrave’s service and leadership initiatives is the CAS programme, an integral part of the curriculum that inspires students to become engaged in local and global creative pursuits, citizenship and student voice, athletics and physical activities, and service learning and volunteerism.

As students fulfill their CAS portfolio requirements, they participate in service as leaders who actively build community by connecting with others and striving to become compassionate, altruistic global citizens.

A familiar adage states: “Leadership is about action, not position.” At Mulgrave, leadership is not a title or exclusive.

Our goal is to open doors and get students involved in ‘learning to lead’ from different places and spaces of interest. Leadership encompasses a broad spectrum of student engagement across the strands in arts, athletics, student voice, service, outdoor education, school clubs, community volunteerism and other school partnerships.

This year, we focused on developing community engagement through enhancing student voice, building a more distributed leadership model for youth, and developing community connections through stronger commitments to local service and volunteerism.

GEO: “BE THE CHANGE, AND BE CHANGED” Mulgrave’s Global Education and Outreach (GEO) programme is more than just international trips. It is a global citizenship programme that makes the world our classroom, engaging youth in experiential service learning in sustainable community development around the globe. Students work on community and/or environmental service projects, connect with learners and leaders from different cultures, explore leadership training and action planning, and have a real impact on the lives of others and each other. When students return home, they are ready to put their learning into practice as true world citizens. Mulgrave’s programming is supported through partnerships with service providers such as Me to We and Stratosphere International.

In 2015, students in Grades 7-10 had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica and Ecuador.

FOUNDATION BOARD

In October, 2015, we announced the success of Imagine Mulgrave, the campaign to build a new Senior School. With over $31 million dollars raised through a record-breaking 75% community participation, we have completed a magnificent new development and profoundly impacted the quality of teaching and learning at Mulgrave without having to raise long term debt or tuition fees. This is a phenomenal achievement for our community and speaks loudly to the intrepid spirit of our extended Mulgrave Family in banding together to ‘make it happen’. These pages are a tribute to the many hundreds of families who have contributed to the betterment of our school in the past year. In every sense, Mulgrave continues to ‘build on its habit of excellence’ and to reach for new horizons of success and achievement in education. The journey continues! Thank you for your support. Looking to the Future The new strategic plan to be produced by the end of 2016 will set out our priorities for educational improvement in the in the next 3-4 year period. We hope that all stakeholders will participate in this process. Here are some of the big questions that we hope to address: • Should we remain committed to a broad curriculum model at all stages in a student’s education?

• How can we ensure continued and increased personalisation of learning, curriculum and support within a broad curriculum model?

• How can we further enrich our curriculum to ensure that all students systematically develop the modern 21st century skills that will ensure they can lead happy, fulfilled and successful lives?

• How can we make our education even more applied to the real world and in a real world context using external partnerships?

• How can we further enrich our co-curricular opportunities?

• Should we further review our core and enriched educational provision across the school year, school week and school day to ensure students benefit from planned improvements, are less pressured and have more opportunities?

• How do we need to further improve our educational facilities and staffing to achieve our educational goals?
