MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD, SHARON GLOVER During the period of this report, I am struck by the accomplishments of our students and the incredible level of support from our community. Thank you to all of you, parents, teachers and students alike, for your hard work, dedication and wonderful sense of community spirit.

I would like to thank all Board members who have served during this period. All our Board members are parent volunteers and during the last year, have made a significant commitment to our school in terms of their time to begin detailed planning on various aspects of our strategic plan. Indeed, this past year has seen the implementation of several key issues related to our strategic plan. The Middle School’s LEAP elective programme as well as other initiatives related to personalised learning throughout each division are now being implemented. The Board has also made significant progress on developing plans for the new Senior School, and we look forward to bringing these plans to fruition over the next few years.

It has been my pleasure to hold the position as Chair of the Mulgrave Board of Directors. I have been a Board member since 2007 and both my children have enjoyed a wonderful education at Mulgrave. As many of you know, I have decided to step down from this position. It has been an honour serving as Sharon Glover

Chair and my plan is to remain on the Board as a Director. Many thanks to you all for supporting me in this role.

The success of Mulgrave today is built on outstanding students, the remarkable commitment of parents and incredibly skilled educators. I hope everyone involved in our school in the years to come will

continue to build on that legacy.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL, JOHN WRAY The period October 2011 – October 2012 has been an important one as we begin to see the initial impact and continued planning of a number of key initiatives that will create the foundations for our ‘Good to Great’ journey. While a Mulgrave education has and will always be about a well-rounded holistic education based on the four strands of education, we have taken a number of steps to strengthen the academic IBO programmes that sit at the heart of our provision.

In the Senior School we have seen a record set of Diploma results for our graduating class and students once again, accessing an impressive range of university options. Further improvements in the quality of teaching, an increased selection of Diploma electives, the diagnostic use of attainment data and increasingly personalised support and personalised learning should see further gains in the achievements of our graduating classes.

In the Middle School we have spent the last year consulting about and planning the re-structured curriculum.

September 2102 saw the introduction of a reinforced MYP core academic curriculum plus a wide range of afternoon academic and non-academic elective programmes to allow students to pursue their own interests and passions.

In the Junior School we have continued to develop the PYP curriculum, but have begun to take a much more focused look at the core strands of Math, Reading and Writing with a view to strengthening these basics skills even further. In September all our K and 1 classes were given a full time teaching assistant to help support personalised learning.

In the Early Learning Centre we have continued to move to the full implementation of the early years

PYP and the use of play and experiential learning within this framework.

Further work has been undertaken in planning the systematic and progressive development of key 21st century skills, and while it will take several years to complete this work thoroughly, we have made big strides forward in the use and application of IT skills particularly in the Junior School with the introduction of the Grade 3–6 iPad programme.

Our programmes in Athletics, the Arts, Service and Outdoor Education have all seen significant development and increased levels of student achievement in the last 12 months. It has been very rewarding to see our students so enthusiastically balance their academic studies along with their strong commitment in these areas.

Overall it has been another very good year for Mulgrave and a key year for taking our educational quality to the next level. Thank you to everyone in our community who has played their part in this success.

This annual publication is distributed to current parents, alumni and staff. The 2011–2012 Report covers the school year starting in September, 2011 and ending October, 2012. Parents play an integral role in our community – key partners in the shared care and success of our students. With their invaluable support and input, we strive collaboratively to help our students reach their true potential. Whether involved in social events, volunteering in the library, or cheering on our teams, our parents share the Mulgrave vision of inspiring excellence in education and life. We are incredibly grateful for how much they do to make our community what it is today.

The Mulgrave Volunteer Parents Association (MVP) helps coordinate all parent volunteer, social and fundraising activities with the school.

Working together with staff and parents, the MVP’s primary goal is to sustain Mulgrave’s sense of community and foster a broad-based spirit of participation. The range of talent and volunteer spirit knows no bounds when it comes to the MVP. We cannot thank them enough for the amazing work and countless volunteer hours they generously give year upon year.

The Board of Directors is entrusted to operate and run the school on behalf of the Mulgrave Independent School Society. There are twelve members of the Board and each Director is elected for a three year term. The Mulgrave Board as of September 1, 2012:

Graduates of Mulgrave School have flourished and gone on to many different parts of the world to work and study. It is always wonderful to hear of all their news and superb achievements. Each December, we look forward to welcoming them back to the school for an alumni event. It is our goal to further develop and engage alumni in more school hosted events in the coming years.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Mulgrave offers the International Baccalaureate programme to all students. We believe the IB is the best education available today to help prepare our students for tomorrow.

It is through an IB education that we can equip our students to become true global citizens, and develop the skills and qualities they need to thrive in their future lives.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS Our results for 2011/2012 are strong overall and continue to show improvement in key areas.

GRADE 4 & 7 FOUNDATION SKILLS ASSESSMENT Although a very narrow measure, the percentage of students exceeding FSA expectations remains at a high level. Our five year average places Mulgrave as a top ranked provincial school.

IB DP RESULTS Mulgrave’s IB Diploma 2012 examination results continued a trend of improvement. Sixty students presented as Diploma candidates and wrote the full range of IB examinations.

Approximately 87% of our Diploma candidates achieved the full IB Diploma, with almost 60% of students receiving a score of 30 points or more.

UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT The Class of 2012 was awarded over $300,000 in scholarships and students are attending universities across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. ATHLETICS Mulgrave offers a rich variety of athletic opportunities.

Our teams play in leagues with both local and other independent schools, and belong to a number of different organisations including BC School Sports, the Independent Schools Athletic Association (ISAA) and the Independent Schools Elementary Association (ISEA). Our coaches support students as they strive for individual excellence. Great emphasis is also placed on sportsmanship, leadership, team play and respect for others.

Through multi-sensory learning in nature-based contexts, Mulgrave’s Outdoor Education programme builds resilience in its students, along with an appreciation for our world class natural surroundings and the skills to actively participate in, and advocate for, our remarkable local region. Mulgrave’s Global Outreach programme is more than just international trips. We embrace the 21st century ideal of “global citizenshift” — the need for greater mindful, active and compassionate engagement in social and environmental responsibility as true world citizens. DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, this worldwide programme of distinction allows youths to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and to their community.

At Mulgrave, students actively participate in adventurous journeys at all three award levels. These trips are planned, organised and implemented by the students.

STUDENT LIFE Listening to the voices of our students on how to best improve the quality of education at our school is an important part of who we are. Senior School students as Prefects and House Captains hold positions of considerable influence in the school. This past year, we have endeavoured to build upon a structured approach to student voice to ensure we engage students dynamically in dialogue about all facets of school life. This will continue to be a focus for 2012-2013.

A TRIBUTE TO MULGRAVE PARENTS There are many good schools in the world but – by contrast – very few that can be described as ‘great’. Just what is it that defines a ‘great’ school? Arguably, one of the key indicators is the strength of the teacher-student-parent triangle: excellent teachers inspiring talented students supported by committed parents. The impact of the learning triangle reaches far beyond the classroom: it changes students, it changes families, it changes communities and it changes the world. Such are the great schools of the world: they are change-makers. We recognise and thank the many Mulgrave families who strengthen learning at Mulgrave.
