NEED TO KNOW Volunteers wanted for Children’s Literature Festival

Theatre department to perform ‘Our Town’

Library Services is looking for volunteers to help with the 50th annual Children’s Literature Festival March 19 and 20. The Children’s Literature Festival hosts authors and illustrators of popular children’s books and allows children to meet some of their favorite authors.

Volunteers will be responsible for introducing the assigned author to attendees, serving as a gofer, keeping track of school groups and assisting with directing teachers and children into rooms, according to the CLF website.

Volunteers will be fed throughout the day and also receive a 20 percent discount on books at the festival.

UCM Department of Theatre and Dance is set to perform Thornton Wilder’s 20th century classic “Our Town” at 7:30 p.m. March 7 - 10, and a matinee at 2 p.m. March 11 in the Highlander Theatre.

The production is the last directoral by theater professor, Richard Herman before his retirement after 31 years of service. The classic play depicts the lives of two individuals, George and Emily, as they begin to fall in love and grow together. The play was written to urge people to celebrate even simple moments in life, according to the news release.

The box office will be open 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. beginning Wednesday for season ticket holders, and March 1 for the general public. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for UCM faculty, staff and senior citizens and $7 for students. Children under 5

years old will not be admitted.

University Union to host 'Coco' film event The Elliott Student Union, in conjunction with the Student Organization of Latinos, is hosting an event to complement the viewing of “Coco” March 1 from 5-7 p.m in Union 235.

Officials will talk about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and its cultural impact in Central American countries.

Students at the event can make their own sugar skull art, enjoy food and drinks and learn about the history of the holiday, which is followed by a screening of "Coco", according to a news release.

Career Services to host Education Career Expo Over 100 school districts are expected at the annual Education Career Expo March 14 from 9 -11 a.m. in the Multipurpose Building. The event provides students the opportunity to network with school districts recruiting full-time positions for the 2018-19 school year, gather employer information and follow up on job leads and contacts, according to the news release.

Career Services suggests dressing professional and bringing multiple copies of résumés to the event, as well as being prepared to network and talk to hiring officials from various school districts.

United Way intends to bring resources together in Johnson County

A Johnson County organization is taking a leap that is said to improve the lives of the county while also creating visibility for itself.

Johnson County United Way is working on a 10-year project that involves buying a building to bring the volunteer services of the county to one area.

Jennifer English, Johnson County United Way executive director, is leading the charge for the program.

“We want to provide a volunteer center where everyone in the community can come in and help, volunteer, train people, and the people getting services can volunteer,” she said. “It’s a community development project that we really want to do, not just providing services, but helping people.”

United Way has received commitments from three agencies it works with including Johnson County Food Center, Early Childhood Hunger Operation and Manna Harvest.

“Each of those agencies will be run by their own board, so they will be governed by their boards and have their own way of doing things, but in the facility, we will also have policies about the data that we need to collect,” English said. “We are all going to have to work together.”

Mary Beth Harper, vice president of the United Way board, said United Way is helping to strengthen relationships and make a sustainable change for the people of Johnson County.

“We saw that transportation was a huge problem in our county, and having a one stop shop would help those in need be able to get services in a centralized location,”

Harper said.

She also said she believes this project will bring the agencies of Johnson County together with a common goal to have less community members in need of assistance.

“We want to be the one to unite our community to become one together, and it all starts with a facility that we are able to effectively serve and can begin to collect data on those that are being served,” Harper said.

United Way is currently in negotiations for a building in Warrensburg.

“Real estate negotiations aren’t actually final until you sign on that dotted line on the closing date,” English said. “We have a tentative closing in June. If all of that turns out okay and we’re able to get that then we are going to start the remodeling part as soon as possible and get basic assistance services within five to six months.”

English said the goal of this project is to focus on the specific needs of individuals who are using the facilities.

“Is it job skills that you need?

If it is, we’re going to have a volunteer center where we can help connect you with some businesses in the area you can volunteer with and get some job skills that can translate into getting a job and then getting off of needing the services,” she said. “Is it a transportation issue? Let’s figure out how you can get a transportation solution so you can help your family then you can keep your job.”

English said it’s important to break the cycle that’s easy to get into when individuals fall on hard times.

“Some people use the services long term, so we want to be able to identify that and help them fig-

ure out what it is they need to get them out of that cycle,” she said.

English said the project will also be beneficial to the students of the University of Central Missouri.

“There will be a lot of different volunteer opportunities for campus organizations to get involved,” she said. “Long term, I can see where we can maybe have a clinic where nursing students can come and do blood pressure checks and stuff like that. Maybe we’ll have a kitchen where dietetic students can come and train people and teach cooking classes.”

She said this will be a way to give students experience for their future careers while also making life better for those struggling in Johnson County.

“Almost every college on the campus can probably use some sort of learning service through this, including tax assistance or budgeting for the kids in the business college,” English said.

“There’s just all kinds of opportunities.”

English said the plan is an expensive one that will require hard work to generate revenue. She said one possibility for this is to open a thrift store.

“We’ll need two pots of money – one to finance the project and one to run Johnson County United Way,” she said. “In order to build up this project, were going to have to be really strong financially.”

English said the project is going to empower those who need assistance in the community.

“We don’t want it to be a stigma if you need assistance,” she said.

“We want it to be a transition time where we can help empower you to do what you need to for your family.”

United Way's impact on the community Johnson County United Way is working on projects that are aimed toward bettering the quality of life in Johnson County, but according to the executive director, not many people in the area know what the organization does.

What is United Way? The United Way is a worldwide non-profit organization that uses its resources to connect agencies like the American Red Cross and ECHO together in a way that helps communities and people in those communities. The goal of the organization is to connect everyone and help them work together in the most efficient way possible.

Johnson County United Way is a member of the worldwide network. It benefits from the worldwide network with marketing materials, legal expertise, resource development strategies and other things that help the organization thrive.

Who does United Way help?

The United Way doesn’t help individuals directly – it helps agencies connect and work together as a way to unite resources of donors, volunteers and agencies. These resources are used to help Johnson County individuals in need. The organization has brought donated shoes to local students; it has also helped a family going through a medical crisis by reaching out to non-profit organizations in the area to secure comfortability for the family during hard times.

What agencies does United Way work with?

Agencies apply to be serviced by United Way and then the organization reviews the agency to see how it helps people.

After that, United Way communicates with the agency to ensure the community is benefiting as much as possible from the services the agency can offer. Johnson County United Way works with agencies like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Johnson County Senior Services, the Salvation Army, Johnson County 4-H and the Hope Coalition.

Who is in charge of running United Way? The face of Johnson County United Way is executive director Jennifer English. She runs the day-to-day operations of the organization and answers to a board that consists of 15 people. English was a member on the board before she obtained the position of executive director about a year ago. She works closely with the boards of agencies United Way provides services to in order to maintain efficiency.

What impact does the United Way in the county?

English said the community depends on Servant’s Open Door, one of the organization’s programs that distributes furniture, linens, clothing, cleaning supplies and household items to clients of the agencies United Way works with. She said over 2,700 people received supplies through the program in just the fourth quarter last year. She also said that without United Way helping the agencies work together, the resources wouldn’t be used in an efficient way.

Student governor, campus leaders planning summit

Student leaders are organizing a summit filled with art and information displays covering topics from how to make student fees more equitable to connecting students to campus resources.

UCM Student Governor Mathew Martinez and various student leaders, are planning the Selmo Sustainability Summit or S3, tentatively set for April 26-28 at Selmo Park, located along Holden street across from the Elliot Student Union.

Martinez said the Selmo Sustainability Summit is a three-day, two-night event to educate students about UCM resources through art and performances. He said they have performers from UCM, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, and Lawrence, Kansas.

Martinez said he hopes to get students to camp out overnight for the two nights in tents.

“In a larger sense, I think that we will be able to show a model to the rest of the nation that this is participatory activism,” Martinez said. “That there are potentially much more effective ways to organize and to see change than by just organizing in a space, waiting for an administrator to do something.”

Mike Godard, Provost/Chief learning officer, said in an email that he and the university's Senior Leadership Team preferred not to comment on this event since it is not a university sponsored event or registered with Student Activities.

Martinez said they are addressing high-level issues, and that’s why they decided to call it a summit. The summit’s main objectives are “students helping students help themselves,” “education

through art” and “leaving UCM better than we found it.”

He said one of their goals during the summit is to plant trees in Selmo park, possibly a small, community garden. He said this way, they can leave the park better than they found it.

Martinez said Facilities Planning and Operations approved planting in Selmo Park however, he is still working on securing a location for the plantings.

The committee plans to fund the planting by applying for the President’s Commission on Inclusivity grant.

Martinez said the idea is to talk about how students can learn from one another, provide students the resources they need to graduate and prioritize mental health and sexual assault resources.

“So, at the end of the day, that’s why we’re doing it,” he said. “We want to educate through art, allow students to help

students so they can help themselves.”

He said UCM’s Green Dot is supporting the summit by bringing students to participate.

“Educating students and giving people a comfortable space to be themselves is kind of a few priorities of the organizing committee,” Martinez said. “We want to educate as many students as possible on the resources that exist and their own personal resources to address mental health issues, where to get resources, if they’re victims of partner violence or sexual assault and start asking questions.”

Rachel Gitau, the summit’s education chair and a junior international studies major, said she joined the event because she supports its goals and wants to be a part of the people who help reach them.

Computer science students to compete in upcoming programming competition

The University of Central Missouri computer science program will send nine students to an upcoming computer programming competition hosted by Northwest Missouri State University April 7.

The competition will showcase Kansas City area students and test their knowledge by completing an array of problems.

The all-day event is meant to create challenges for students that are not normally seen in a classroom, said Jason James, faculty advisor for the UCM teams.

Ryan Evans, senior computer science major with a focus on software development, will compete in the upcoming event.

“I went to a programming competition last semester where we worked on solving different sets of problems,” Evans said. “Competing in these kinds of competitions gives me real-world experience

that I can use.”

Evans is also the president of the Association for Computer Machinery at UCM and has used his education and experience at similar competitions to land a position with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

UCM will also be sending Peter Copus, a junior computer science and cyber security major, to the competition. Copus, also a returning veteran from last semester’s event, said he is using this experience to help prepare for his future.

“I want to use this competition to gather real-world experience, improve my communication skills and help improve my teamwork skills,” Copus said. “With each team only having one computer to work on, we must use our communication skills well in order to complete the assigned problems.”

Competing in an event like this is no easy feat. Evans and Copus said they both prepared well for any challenge that may come in April.

“I started programming back when I was in high school,” Evans said. “That is what led me here to UCM.” Evans is not the only programmer who had an early start in computer science.

Copus was also introduced to programming at an early age.

“I have been programming since I was 12,” Copus said. “Both my mom and dad work in the computer science department at UCM, so that helped me a lot.”

James, also a computer science professor in the department said preparing for this type of event is crucial. Without the proper preparation beforehand, the time spent competing may be all for nothing.

He said he gauges student interest in the event and divides students up accordingly into teams.

“I am a coach per se, but I allow the students to organize their own practices,” James said. “I help recommend to the students several example problems to prepare for the competition.”

The competition itself is point-based

and rewards teams according to completion order.

“Whichever team completes their assigned problems first receives the highest amount of points,” Copus said. “The next team receives fewer points and so on.”

James said receiving these points do not come easy.

“The problems at the competition will range from easy, medium and extremely difficult,” James said. “The extremely difficult problems are designed to give competitors a tough time and are usually unsolvable at this level.”

Competitions like these bring out the best in students who are willing to accept the challenge.

“In the last competition our teams placed first and second,” Evans said. “I am eager to see how we do this time.”

Copus said he is also ready to see what is to come at this competition.

“I am very excited for the competition and can’t wait to see how well me and my team can do,” Copus said.

Davontae Hare, the operations safety lead of the summit and a sophomore public relations major, said this event is important for UCM organizations to main-

tain sustainability.

“Sustainability is a conversation we should have sooner rather than later and this event is the perfect outlet for all campus organizations to come support and learn,” he said. “Sustainability is important because as we continue to have organizations grow on campus we want our campus to be healthy environment-wise and culture-wise.”

Martinez said that since UCM is com-

prised of 63 percent low-income, under-represented Pell-Grant eligible students, it is important to provide resources for completion or at least more efficient information on the cost of college.

Martinez said more student groups should be funded better by student fees and hopes that this summit could help inspire those financial changes.

He said this summit will also look at UCM financial literacy and show students

how fees work.

Martinez said that it’s unsustainable to ask low-income students to come to UCM and not get degrees and will address retention rates at the event.

He said, “If we are to survive as an institution we must examine the true costs borne by students, especially those from the inner city and rural Missouri.”

Kander, former secretary of state, chosen for Student Government Association award

Former Missouri secretary of state Jason Kander is the 2018 recipient of the Excellence in Governance Award from the Student Government Association.

SGA created the Excellence in Governance Award in 1985 to honor the public service of James C. Kirkpatrick, who served as Missouri’s secretary of state for 20 years.

“I am honored to receive it, particularly from a group of young people who aspire to be a part of making our communities better, because I feel like a big part of my role and my usefulness is in inspiring the next generation to step up and do great things,” Kander said.

Zachary Walker, Internal Issues committee chair of SGA, said they chose Kander because he has done things at the state and national level that go beyond the Warrensburg community.

“One of the reasons we chose Kander was the prestigious honor, again, for his dedication as the secretary of state of Missouri. Also, part of the Army National Guard,” he said. “There have been policy decisions that he has voted for because people here at UCM advocated for it and I know he doesn’t support the budget cuts

that Greitens is doing,” Walker said.

Recently, Missouri colleges could see higher education funding cut by about $70 million under Greiten’s new budget proposal.

Walker said one example of Kander’s excellence in government is his work with voters. He has an organization called Let America Vote, which fights voter suppression. This organization battles politicians who try to make it harder for people to vote in elections.

“I’ve been in 34 states in the past year talking to audiences about voting rights and I’ve also been invited often to talk about how Democrats stand up for what we believe in,” Kander said. “And I think at the end of the day, the most important thing for any politician is to say what you truly believe because even if voters don’t agree with everything that you say, they will always give you credit if they notice you truly believe what you’re saying and that you believe it because you care about them.”

Beth Rutt, director of Student Activities and adviser to SGA, received the award last year, and said she was humbled and even concerned that SGA should reconsider.

“I just felt rather inadequate to receive such an honor,” Rutt said. “When you

look at all the others before me and those since then, I feel very blessed but still a little out of place.”

Rutt said she would like the community to come to Kander’s ceremony and support SGA as they recognize him and remember James C. Kirkpatrick.

“Public service is very important to me,” she said. “Today we can become very discouraged when we look around at the circumstances in our world and listen to the news. But Jimmie Kirkpatrick wasn't a person who I ever saw swayed by the ways of the world. He remained

engaged, happy and always wanting to be a part of the change to make life better…

Jimmie Kirkpatrick had an enthusiasm for life and community service. That's what the folks that have been awarded the Excellence in Governance Award have been recognized for.”

Kander said his main advice for anyone going into office is to focus on making change and not “being somebody.”

“Rather than try to be something, focus on doing something,” He said. “Focus on the change that you want to see and if there’s an office between you and that change, then you run for that office. But, if you start with trying to change something rather than just trying to be something yourself, you’ll be a lot happier.”

Rutt said Kander’s award ceremony will be the first one that Doris Kirkpatrick has not attended. Doris Kirkpatrick died this past weekend, Feb. 24.

Doris Kirkpatrick was the wife of the late James C. Kirkpatrick.

“It will definitely be different without Doris,” Rutt said. “She, in her own right, was a woman of dedication to her community, family and the university.”

The award ceremony for Kander is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 19 at the JCKL Atrium. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

GAMESHOW PROVIDES FILM STUDENTS REAL-WORLD APPLICATION

Digital media production students in an advanced multicam production course are filming UCM’s first ever in-studio game show this semester.

The show, Game Central, aired its first episode Thursday on the UCM Media Network. Teams comprised of members from UCM’s Filmmakers and Actors Coalition and UCM Jennies volleyball competed in the debut.

“It’s a charade’s style, kind of like Heads Up,” said Allyson Cook, a graduate student producer for Game Central.

“So the words are behind them and their teammates have to tell them clues about whatever the word is and they have to guess it.”

Cook said the show will feature seven different organizations from around campus each week in a round-robin style competition until they become seeded for an elimination bracket. The overall champions will then receive a prize pack.

The other five organizations participating this semester include: The Broadcast Educators Association, Public Relations Student Society of America, United Student Housing Association, Delta Chi and Jennies basketball. When the teams aren’t competing, they act as a live studio audience in the Patton Broadcast Center studio to add another layer of experience for the students Shannon Johnson, instructor of communication and faculty advisor of the course, said nine students work on set creating graphics, controlling the cameras and writing the script for the game show.

“There are certain roles that exist from week to week,” Johnson said. “That way you can get feedback, build and develop those skills. Then some of the other ones that have already been covered in other courses we rotate through those for the whole class, so everybody will run a cam-

era and everybody will do audio and everybody will do graphics.”

He said the purpose of the class is for students to learn how to direct a show with effective time management and develop in roles to which they are already familiar.

Johnson said they spent several class periods developing the format, deciding on the rules and the game play. The show consists of two graduate student producers, two faculty producers, a host and four other students who work on writing, audio, graphics and camera operations. The three graduate students in the class will each eventually produce four entire episodes.

Unruh said she went into the first episode a little nervous “I was like ‘Oh man, I hope I can pull it together for this,’ but when they called ‘Cut’ at the end of the first episode and everyone clapped…all the DMP majors came out and they were like ‘Hannah you did such a great job. That went so smoothly,’” Unruh said. “I’m just going to keep growing from this and learning how to be able to be on camera and host. It’s already off to such a good start.”

Cook said she thinks the show is cool and different.

“We’ve done a lot of news-formatted shows, sports shows (and) talk shows like SideTracked, but I think we definitely are bringing something different to Central TV,” Cook said. “I think it’d be cool if it continues on after this semester because you could get other organizations involved, and I think it brings awareness to our program and what we do.”

Johnson said he thinks the episodes are going to get better and better.

“I think we’re going to get the snowball rolling…we have some very competitive individuals and they’re not just on sports teams, and I think they’re going to go all out,” Johnson said. “They have a taste for what this is now and I think they’re going to be animated, I think they’re going to be dynamic to watch. It’s going to be fun. I think they’re going to put all those energies into it and we’re going to have some outstanding productions.”

" " Animation that exceeds expectation

Pixar has a reputation for creating great animated films and “Coco” is no exception. It has received massive critical claim, joining its place alongside other recent additions like “Ratatouille,” “Inside Out” or “Up.” Now if only Pixar can keep the magic going for “Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4.”

The film follows Miguel, a young boy who longs to be a musician, despite his family’s hatred of music. After an accident, during the Day of the Dead celebration, he becomes stuck in the actual Land of the Dead, the realm where everyone goes when they die. There, the Dead live in a giant city filled with its sections and rules. Now Miguel must find his way back to the Land of the Living, all the while dealing with his family, both past and present.

I’ll begin by saying “Coco” is amazing.

The animation is beautiful, and I mean that. It can almost be breathtaking at times.

I don’t know much about animation, but the “Coco” artists did an amazing job. The detail and use of color is really something to marvel. They designed the Land of the Dead as such a gorgeous and

creative place. It looks like a wonderful spot to spend the afterlife.

The animation isn’t the only good thing about “Coco,” either. The story is good, the writing is good, the characters are good, I didn’t even become annoyed by the standard cute, animal sidekick.

I regret not seeing “Coco” in theaters because it’s one of the best movies to come out last year. Although, I’m not sure if I would’ve appreciated watching an almost half hour Olaf short. I think I would’ve just came to the screening late, like everyone online said they did.

Now, like all good Pixar films, there is plenty of emotional scenes in “Coco.”

These are parts that either can make you really happy or really sad. There are moments that might make you feel a little teary-eyed. Granted, I didn’t cry, though my heart did ache at times.

You would think death would be a taboo topic in a kids’ movie. Death plays a big role in “Coco,” the setting is in the Land of the Dead after all. Surprisingly, the film handles this potentially dark subject matter in a very effective way, that is also child friendly. The film teaches that having loved ones who have passed on isn’t bad, which is a great message for children.

In truth, “Coco” is a good educational movie for younger audiences. To be honest, I didn’t know that much about the Day of the Dead before I watched this film. It does a great job of representing Mexican culture, or at least from my perception anyway. Either way, it’s a great way for

kids to learn. Because unlike watching educational videos in class, “Coco” isn’t boring.

This is a great animated film, however, since I am a critic, I’m going to bring up some flaws. If you’re looking for a funny movie, this may not be it. While there’s comedy featured throughout, most of it is in the beginning. In classic Pixar fashion, they begin the story with a warm upbeat feeling, so they can catch you off guard with emotional drama later on. With that being said, the emotional scenes in “Coco” are very well done.

There are a few plot twists and I did see one of them coming. Still, it didn’t distract me from enjoying the film.

The villain of this movie is heartless. If you thought Scar from “The Lion King” was cold-blooded, prepare for someone who could give him a run for his money.

I can’t go into more because it’s a spoiler, just know the villain is a terrible person.

Overall, I felt emotionally satisfied after watching “Coco.” It had great animation and a great message for children. The characters had meaningful story arcs, the world they created is wonderful and it’s one the best animated movies to come out in a while. I recommend seeing it. I won’t overhype it anymore because everyone else says it’s amazing too.

Who says kids movies are dumb? Kids movies can be just as good as regular films, if not better. If anything, good kids movies can show just how generic regular movies really are. “Coco” certainly does – it’s worth watching.

Some 450 faculty and staff attended a much-anticipated general faculty meeting Wednesday where President Chuck Ambrose outlined $10.7 million in budget cuts and a possible reorganization of the four colleges on campus to three.

Due to deeper cuts in state appropriations for fiscal year 2019, which would be $5.6 million based on Gov. Eric Greiten’s budget proposal and the significant decline in enrollment in international graduate students, UCM is again facing the arduous task of providing educational services to students with a considerable and sudden reduction in resources.

“It’s difficult for us to once again talk about that next reset button, reshaping higher education, and saying that we’re doing anything wrong,” Ambrose said at the meeting. “We’re doing a whole lot of things right.

But then, of course, the world throws some things at you that you can’t necessarily control and then you have to think, ‘What does that mean for us and how do we move forward?’”

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Roger Best said UCM is projected to receive $49 million in state appropriations, lower than the approximately $60 million it received in fiscal year 2001.

However, when adjusted for inflation, the $60 million in 2001 would be about $87 million in 2019. In actual value, the university is down about $38 million.

Ambrose said the university’s focuses moving forward, particularly in the next three years, will be sustainability, academic performance and student success.

The biggest focus will be in increasing the university’s retention rate. Ambrose said that every 1 percent increase in retention amounts to $800,000 in new revenue. Currently, UCM’s retention rate is just under 72 percent. Ambrose said the goal is to increase that to 80 percent.

In a Muleskinner interview prior to the faculty meeting, Provost and Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard said the university will shift from an equality model of education, whereby the same standards and benefits are applied to every student, to an equity model of education, where more focus will be given to students most at risk for not finishing their degree. He said that shift should help increase the retention rate.

A total of 150 positions may be affected by the budget cuts. However, 98 of those positions are already vacant – 29 faculty positions and 67 staff positions – because of the Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive offered to and accepted by employees in this year.

The plan is simply to eliminate those positions at a savings of about $6.6 million. There are between 30 and 50 positions that are currently filled that will be eliminated.

However, Godard said the university will preserve the faculty tenure and rank process. Ambrose said promotions are critical for the quality of the education provided to students.

“We, in the best of times and the worst of times, have committed ourselves to promotion and rank decisions,” Ambrose said. “That is absolutely critical if we maintain quality in a faculty. And that’s our primary driver of output, the quality of the experience.”

Additional strategies for fiscal year 2019 include a $1 million athletic budget reduction, a $500,000

maintenance and repair reduction, a $1.6 million reduction to the operating budget and $1 million in contributions from auxiliary enterprises such as the University Book Store.

Another proposal that will be presented to the board of governors in two weeks is reducing the number of academic colleges from four to three. The interim dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Michael Sekelsky, is retiring, and the consolidation of colleges wouldn’t mean the removal of a dean. However, it may affect other positions within the college.

Godard said while the cuts in state appropriations are factoring into the administrative decisions, many decisions are made every year and are not necessarily made because of the budget.

“We are looking at restructuring academic colleges in terms of how we can be more efficient,” he said.

“Not necessarily looking at individual programs in terms of eliminating those; we already have a process through the state, through the Missouri Department of Higher Education on how we look at the viability of academic programs. That’s been there, it is there, and it will continue to be there. That’s nothing new. When we look at restructuring colleges, it’s really to look for increased efficiencies.”

Those students that fall into one of those three groups retain at about 66 percent.

Warrensburg Middle School experienced a phone outage Feb. 9. The system was down for about a week, which seemed like a long period of time. As this was unfolding in our community, families in Florida were dealing with a school shooting.

Our readership includes faculty and staff who have children that attend the school district, so on of our reporters looked into the progress of the phone system’s restoration.

The R-6 administration’s response was far less than acceptable.

Garrett, This surely doesn’t sound very newsworthy for your audience to me. Does the Muleskinner plan to report on every power outage, phone outage or network outage across Warrensburg?

A better story if you are supposed to be covering the school district, would be the positive impact that PBIS is having at Warrensburg Middle School and Sterling Elementary or the Exemplary Professional Learning Community awards received

by Sterling Elementary and Ridge View Elementary or the selection of Dr. Lorna Cassell, Martin Warren Principal, by her West Central peers as their Distinguished Elementary Principal to represent them at the State-level and possibly compete for the National award.

About the only thing I agree with Donald Trump on is his belief that our press is out of control and irresponsible. The Press has a duty to report news....the GOOD news as well as the bad, but since the bad news sells....The Press disproportionately investigates and shares the bad new even to the point of searching for a story where one doesn’t even exist. Thus allowing legitimacy to a ridiculous term such as “fake-news.” This in turn feeds and shapes the opinions and perceptions of our society, conditioning them to search for the negative in people and institutions. I hope you are having these

type of discussions in your classes in light of a nation turning away from traditional news sources.

I will give you information on a negative story concerning the school district only if you print two positive stories first.

Learn to look for the GOOD in people and institutions FIRST. If you still think a landline phone outage in cell phone world is worthy of your time and effort, I would suggest calling the source, Mr. Elliott.

Thanks Andy Kohl Andy Kohl is the R-6 assistant superintendent for support services. There are several things that should be addressed in his response.

As I previously established, the newsworthiness of the story is quite relevant to our audience. Also, the Muleskinner is a paper of record, not a quid per quo, ethically compromised tabloid. We uphold journalistic integrity to publish content that holds society accountable. It's our responsibility to record history in the most accurate way that serves our readership.

Although Kohl replied to our request, he didn’t answer our questions. So, we submitted a Sunshine Law request for documents, work orders, contracts and emails related to the phone outage. The school district’s response showed no record of work orders for the outage or communication between Kohl and the superintendent about the issue. It appears the repair work was built into an existing contract. That’s fine. That’s what we were wondering.

Kohl’s demand for positive coverage in exchange for “information on a negative story” creates distrust. There are still professional journalists working in the public's best interest and to do that you don’t make deals in the dark for information.

We’ll maintain our social responsibility as the press to act not only as a watchdog but also as a paper of record.

This means we record both the good and bad things that happen when requesting information in order to understand a

situation better – whether it’s newsworthy or not – we can’t know unless we understand.

The Muleskinner isn’t going to cover every small outage that happens, to answer Kohl’s question. We cover the ones that matter.

And to address the misconception that bad news is fake news. Fake news is literally inaccurate information intended to be perceived as valid information. Just because you don’t like or agree with it does not mean its not real (this is where you’d cue climate change deniers.)

Kohl clarified his intentions for the email in a phone interview Wednesday.

He said our reporting process lacked a traditional approach because we started with an email inquiry. He said he felt obligated to help guide young journalists in their learning efforts but is difficult to express in an email that lacks tone.

He said he believes transparency is inherent in his line of work, and the media should take advantage of resources like the Sunshine Law. Kohl said journalists, in their quest for information, should look beyond the bad and seek the good to better the relationship between a news outlet and the community it serves.

As a paper of record, we don’t seek to deceive the public with fake news or inaccurate information. We only seek to record what is happening, both good and bad. To be completely honest, our track record speaks for itself as far as covering positive stories in the community goes.

Our outlet will continue to document the workings of the university, Warrensburg and the surrounding communities.

It’s also our responsibility to hold those in the community accountable.

So, when a public official answers one of our requests for information by telling us to write about something else, we will not apologize and go away.

Our country’s administration has made it clear it’s not really acceptable to not meet the public’s expectations and although I hate to admit it – they’re right.

We should exceed the societal expectation, we owe it to each other.

A shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Valentine’s day. This shooting ended with 17 dead and the shooter in custody. In its wake, the focus has shifted from the shooting itself to discussing how to preventing them from happening.

Students, parents and politicians have been giving their opinions on how to stop these shootings. While everyone is giving their opinion on how to stop the violence, those same people are also marginalizing the people on the other side of the aisle within the same breath. That is where the problem lies. People have become so tribal in their ideas that no discussion can occur without the conversation filling up with vitriol and hate. There needs to be an understanding of what someone is truly arguing for without the other side misconstruing it as something else. For this, there needs to be a breakdown of both sides, starting off with pro-gun reform.

When someone says they are pro-gun reform, the topic of banning ArmaLight rifles or semi-automatic assault weapons is usually what comes next. While a gun reform advocate is chanting this, it is striking fear into those who support the Second Amendment. Saying a blanket term like that goes against what the Supreme Court has ruled in Heller v. D.C. that makes gun-owning Americans scared of losing their right to bear arms.

For context, the Heller v. D.C. answered the question whether the right “keep and bear arms” applied to individuals not in a well-regulated militia. In regards to this case the Supreme Court sided with Heller, concluding an individual has the right to keep and bear arms. In the explanation of the ruling, the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia wrote, “Thus, the most natural reading of “keep Arms” in the Second Amendment is to “have weapons.” GUNS, continued on page 11

"Black panther"

“Black Panther” has made over $700 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.

“Black Panther” is the Marvel Cinematic Universe most-recent release with a star-studded cast, including Chadwick Boseman as one of the first black superheroes. The film is receiving massive critical successes and as you can tell from this title, I thought it was awesome too. It proves itself to be more than just another MCU movie killing time before the next Avengers movie arrives.

It takes place right after the events from “Captain America: Civil War,” Prince T’Challa, must deal with his father’s death and replace him both as King and as the Black Panther of Wakunda, a fictional African nation. As king, T’Challa is faced with problems and dilemmas of being a ruler, while another character tries to replace him on the throne.

There’s so much to say about this movie. For starters, the directing, set-pieces, and worldbuilding are all very well done, which is made even better by a good story and a good cast. In addition, the film balances comedy, drama and action.

What truly makes “Black Panther” so great is that it feels original. Many of other Marvel films feel

similar to one another. In “Black Panther,” there is no old music, there’s no beam in the sky – there aren’t even that many characters with superpowers.

Wakunda itself was crafted with a lot of creativity, especially with its different tribes, cities and technologies. How it’s all explained in the beginning is just as engaging. Despite being set in a fictional country, the language spoken in Wakunda is a real African dialect called Xhosa. I really appreciate that the filmmakers were willing to go the extra mile and make modern audiences read subtitles.

MCU films receive constant criticism for having forgettable villains, I’m pleased to say that “Black Panther” is an exception to that rule. Eric Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, also known for “Creed,” is a compelling villain. He was ruthless and sympathetic, making up for Jordon’s last appearance in a superhero film, which would be “Fan4stic.” I also enjoyed Andy Serkis as Klaw who played the crazy psychopath very well. Though I will admit, both villains did feel a little cartoonish at times.

There are of course some other flaws in the movie. But then again, so does every movie. I do mean every movie. The actions scenes are great, but they’re not many. The movie wasn’t boring at all, it’s just if you’re looking for nonstop fighting, you might be a little disappointed. There were moments that did feel a little predictable. Also, the timeline is a little confusing. “Black Panther” takes place directly after “Civil War,” but that movie came out two years ago…

My only other nitpick would be that there was a “what are those” joke made. I hated that joke back when it was popular.

The side characters are great help make up for the shortfalls. I could practically spend paragraphs describing this actor who played this person, even if for a short while. But Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, is probably the best example. Her chemistry with her brother felt believable. They acted a lot like real siblings. To be honest the best example would be the “what are those” joke she made.

Other side-characters don’t feel like they overstay their welcome either. In most Hollywood movies, Martin Freeman’s role as Everett Ross, the only American in “Black Panther,” would have been one of the main characters, but he’s not. The main characters are T’Challa, his family, his allies and other people that should be the main characters – it’s about their fictional country, after all.

With all that said, “Black Panther” is a great superhero film. You could make a very good case that it’s the best in the MCU, at least for now.

After clinching the MIAA regular season title outright against Missouri Southern with a game to spare, Jennies basketball took care of business in their season finale at Pittsburg State winning 60-56.

The Jennies will now turn their attention to the MIAA tournament this weekend March 1-4 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. Winning it all will give the Jens a chance to overtake the top spot of the central region in the NCAA’s regional rankings where they are currently second. Taking the top spot in their region gives the Jennies home-court advantage through the regional games of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Dave Slifer said the goal is to keep winning and hopefully host NCAA Tournament games on the UCM campus “We want to host a regional and for that to happen, we have to keep winning,” Slifer said after earning the title last Thursday.

Slifer said he was full of excitement when he finished cutting down the nets against Missouri Southern, and is looking forward to an exciting conference tournament.

“Anytime you have a net in your hands, it’s a good feeling,” Slifer said. “We now know we play Thursday 6 p.m. at Municipal and we’d love to see a big crowd out there. It’s the best conference tour-

nament in Division II and I’d love to get a good crowd.”

All five Jennies starters were named to the All-MIAA team.

Guard Paige Redmond was named conference Player of the Year and First Team All-MIAA. Forward Kayonna Lee was chosen as Defensive Player of the Year and All-Defensive Team. Guard Morgan Fleming made the Second Team in her sophomore season.

Guard Kelsey Williams and forward Megan Skaggs were honorable mentions.

During the Pitt State game, Skaggs went for a game-high 16 and put on a clinic from long range going 4-6. Redmond scored 13 while adding six rebounds and five assists, she has scored in double figures for 18 consecutive games.

Clinching the conference championship also gave the Jennies the number one seed and a first-round bye in the MIAA tournament. The Jens will play their first game Thursday against the Lindenwood Lions, who won their first tournament game over Missouri Southern Monday night. The game will be played at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

A recent scholarship winner in the kinesiology program is weighing her options in a department that sees 100 percent of its students land careers.

UCM senior Winnie Wilson is among three students in the program to win a scholarship this year. She was awarded the $1,500 Paul DeMartinis scholarship by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society earlier this semester. The scholarship is in memory of DeMartinis, a sports medicine salesman who died in 2015.

“I didn’t know much about athletic training before college, but decided I wanted to go into the field pretty quick after I arrived,” Wilson said.

Wilson has been in the athletic training program at UCM for two years since transferring from Park University and is originally from Kansas City, Missouri. Program Director Brian Hughes has worked with Wilson since she started in the program and said her level of professional engagement led to winning this scholarship.

“She’s a very determined and driven young lady that works incredibly hard,” Hughes said. “She will be at every activity and meeting she can.”

The athletic training program currently boasts a 100 percent job placement for their graduates. Hughes attributes this to the experience students receive while working toward their degree.

“Our students work with the athletic teams on campus throughout their seasons,” Hughes said. “They perform physicals, input medical records and work with athletes during practices and games.

Senior athletic training student Winnie Wilson was awarded the Paul DeMartinis National Scholarship for the spring 2018.

They’re completely immersed in the world of athletic training.”

Wilson said she has plenty of options following her graduation later this year.

She said the athletic training department could hire her as a graduate assistant or she could pursue an opportunity working in a new environment.

Hughes said he and Wilson have talked about some options.

“She’s kicked around the idea of going straight into the workforce and has also considered working here as a graduate assistant,” Hughes said. “I would definitely take her as a grad assistant, but we like to kick our graduates out of the nest so they can experience the real world.”

Wilson will be able to put this scholarship on her resume, which Hughes said carries a lot of weight.

“It’s a big deal and it carries a lot of weight for the students who earn these scholarships,” Hughes said. “Being awarded a scholarship named after a prominent person in our field goes a long way with potential employers,” Hughes said. “They’ll recognize that.”

Wilson will walk at graduation in May but will have to come back and take one class over the summer to complete her degree. After that, she has plenty of options.

“I don’t know exactly what my future holds, but I don’t think it will matter where I end up as long as I’m working in athletic training,” Wilson said.

Mules roll past Cardinals in Rematch Central Missouri Mules baseball needed just seven innings to defeat the William Jewell Cardinals 14-2 Tuesday.

This is the Mules second game against William Jewell.

In their first game, the Cardinals beat Central Missouri 5-0. The Mules have won nine straight and have improved to 10-2 overall record on the season.

UCM had a slightly slow start to the game. Eventually,

the Mules had gained an advantage of the Cardinals after the first inning of scoring seven runs. It was a domination over that, as the Mules offense never let go of the lead after putting up four more runs in the second inning to put them up by more than 10 points.

hit games. Eight of the nine Mules starters picked up at least one hit and seven scored a run. This win ties the Mules longest winning streak from last year with nine.

The Mules continue to play in MIAA play on the road Friday, March 3, at 3 p.m. for a three game set against Washburn in Topeka, Kansas.

Fourteen from UCM track and field chosen for national meet A total of 14 athletes from Central Missouri track and field were selected to compete in 11 events at the upcoming NCAA National Indoor Championship.

The list of the accepted entries was announced by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon.

The Mules will be sending seven athletes to compete in eight events. Jesse Miller is the only Mule out of seven to compete in multiple events. He was accepted for

both high jump and triple jump. He has also earned an All-American recognition for triple jump.

Three Mules throwers and two pole vaulters were chosen to get the chance to compete. Nathan Cumming, an outdoor All-American in the shot put last year, will look to earn his second award in two weeks.

The Jennies are sending two to compete in individual events, and Hannah VanBuskirk is the only one to do so

in multiple events. She set new personal records this year in the pentathlon and the high jump.

Alliah McClendon is the other individual. She qualified in the 60m hurdles after finishing second and running an 8.63 in the MIAA Championship.

The track and field National Championship will be held from Friday to Saturday, March 9-10 in Topeka, Kansas.

Central Missouri Athletics to Hold Fan Gathering for MIAA Basketball Central Missouri basketball is back in Kansas City for the MIAA Championships.

Before both the Mules and Jennies quarter final round game, UCM will host a pregame fan gathering at Johnny’s Tavern in the Power and Light District, There will be refreshments and other giveaways.

Johnny’s Tavern is located at 1310 Grand Blvd. in

Kansas City, Missouri.

The reception prior to the Jennies game will take place Thursday, March 1, beginning at 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tipoff for the Jennies at against Lindenwood is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Friday, Mar. 2, will see the Mules in action. The pregame reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. before the Mules

tip off at 8:15 p.m.

Should either team advance to the semifinal round Saturday, March 3, the reception, also at Johnny’s, will start around 4:30 p.m. This would be in between the women’s session in the early afternoon and before the men’s session in the evening.

Central President Dr. Lovinger at the Commissioning Ceremony with Lt. Col. Warlick.

Lieutenant Colonel William F. Warlick, a professor of Military Science at Central, was named Commanding Officer for the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps detachment that began operation on campus later that fall. Lt. Col. Warlick headed a staff of officers and non-commissioned officers assigned to the ROTC detachment. ROTC instruction began officially at Central in September 1968.

Vernon Kennedy, a former student, trisport athlete and MIAA Champion, died at 85.

Kennedy was a first-team AllMIAA tackle, reaping honors PHOTO: 1928 RHETOR in 1926, 1927 Vernon Kennedy and 1928. He was a four-time All-MAAA track selection and in 1927 MIAA Championships, won the shot put, javelin, pole vault and discus events and tied for first in the high jump.

In 1927, he won the decathlon at the prestigious Penn Relays. Kennedy was active in the Missouri State Show-Me Games and the Senior Olympics in St. Louis, where he competed annually and was a consistent gold medalist in several events. In September 1954, Central’s football and outdoor track and field facility was formally dedicated to him.
