Fourth consecutive alumni chosen to keynote Freedom Scholarship Dinner Jason Brown Managing Editor

A UCM alumnus who has led multiple national efforts in diversity and multiculturalism will be the keynote speaker for the Freedom Scholarship Dinner.

Robert N. Page Jr. marks the fourth consecutive alumni member to be selected by the MLK Committee as the featured speaker of the dinner which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom.

The title of Page’s speech is “Living and Leaving a Legacy” and addresses King’s values of education, being a strong member of society and how King’s message inspired him.

“I’ll be talking about Dr. King’s commitment to education and how that inspired me to navigate through a bachelor’s and master’s degree at UCM,” Page said. “Trying to be a productive citizen, we all have things we need to work on, but I think my successes have come because of inspiration, motivation and the perspective on education that Dr. King had.”

Page’s path to being named the dinner’s keynote speaker began at a conference where he expressed interest in being considered.

“I attended a conference that Dr. Love was at and she asked if I knew of any keynote speakers,” Page said. “So I told her I would be interested as a former alum. I submitted my proposal in October and found out I was chosen in late November.”

Page had attended the dinner on multiple occasions in the past through his friendship with Chuck Ambrose, former university president. He said this is a great way to make a difference.

“It is an opportunity for me to give back,” he said. “Part of the agreement we have is that any honorarium proceeds would go back to the Freedom Scholarship. It’s just a

way for me to contribute to my knowledge of Martin Luther King and what his legacy has meant to me as a UCM alum.”

Page attended UCM in the 1980s, earning both his bachelor’s in communication and master’s in counseling. Since graduating from UCM, Page has worked in postsecondary education for more than 30 years, making stops at Arizona State University, the University of Kansas and Metropolitan Community College - Kansas City.

While at UCM, Page said there were few programs or initiatives promoting inclusivity, so he found inspiration through individuals like Greg Roberts, former dean of students.

“At the time, navigating UCM as a young multiracial student was challenging and he (Roberts) was kind of like a Dr. King figure in many ways,” Page said.

“He supported me intrinsically to do better and motivated me, which helped because I wasn’t challenged as much academically as much as personally, being a city kid out of St. Louis.”

In addition to Page’s work in postsecondary education, he has been involved in many national projects to promote inclusivity and diversity. His most notable work is in the creation of the Tunnel of Oppression, a demonstration that shines light on the inequality that still exists in society.

The tunnel is demonstrated on the UCM campus during Unity Week as well as on numerous other campuses across the country.

Page said his work at KU and MCC focuses on equity and inclusion.

“Dr. King, in a very early part of my life, helped set that pathway for me to look at what I can do to make the world a more inclusive place,” Page said. “Diversity is the mantra of everything I do and it’s in large

More specifically, Page’s work at MCC as the regional leader for inclusivity initiatives entailed creating work environments that are inclusive and support students’ academic success.

“Any person doing work in diversity should be working to foster an environment or climate that promotes academic success and a community of appreciation, understanding, respect and stability,” Page said.

Ed Wirthwein, chair of the MLK Committee, said the selection process entails gathering a list of keynote recommenda-

tions, followed by a final vote to decide who will be the speaker.

“We have a committee of 12 UCM faculty, staff and students as well as two community members,” he said. “We start our meetings when we return to campus in the fall. We brainstorm alumni who we feel would be good speakers for this event.

We get four to five names and we vote as a committee. The ones who are not selected we keep for future years.”

Page lives in Olathe, Kansas, and has recently began working on his doctoral program in education, leadership and policy at KU.

Worship service remembers Martin Luther King Jr. Kaitlin Brothers News Editor

The UCM Alumni Memorial Chapel will fill with song and praise next week to remember Martin Luther King Jr. The Warrensburg MLK Committee will host the church service at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Chapel. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

Ed Wirthwein, chair of the MLK committee, said the service usually has 100 to 150 people attend. He said during the service, many community and student groups will perform musical acts to reflect on King’s past.

“It gives a chance to showcase their talents,” Wirthwein said. “It also gives a highlight to Dr. King’s work...Even though he’s been gone for a while now, it’s still important to remember the work he did to bring our nation together.”

Erica Collins, a member of the MLK Committee, said the service is free and open to the public.

“It is an evening where members of our community can come together and worship ecumenically,” Collins said.

Collins said pre-service music starts at 6

p.m. Once the service starts, there will be selections from worship teams from different churches around the community.

Pastor Patrick Edwards from First Baptist Church will host the service. There will be an inspirational message given by Arthur Kemp, UCM professor of psychological science.

Collins said there will also be a scholarship announcement of $500 hosted by the Warrensburg Ministerial Association, and the recipient of last year’s scholarship will speak about the scholarship.

Collins said it’s important for the community to gather and remember King’s message of acceptance. She said when she

traveled to Jamaica for a mission trip, it reminded her of his message.

“It’s an encompassing environment where everybody is included and accepted,” she said. “And I think that most people walk away feeling very inspired...What I’ve learned by traveling all over is that no matter what color someone is, or their ethnic background or religion, we are all one in the same.”

The church service is one of many other events being put on by the Warrensburg MLK Committee for the Martin Luther King Jr. 2019 Celebration around the theme of “One Dream, One Nation: Moving Forward Together.”

Volunteer Fair connects students with community partners Erin Wides Features Editor

From walking dogs to helping kids, the campus community can find a variety of groups to get involved with at the upcoming Volunteer Fair.

The fair is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Elliott Student Union Atrium.

As of Tuesday, 18 community partners will be in attendance to advertise and promote their organizations to potential volunteers.

“The Volunteer Fair is held each semester to give our students, faculty and staff an opportunity to connect with our local and surrounding community partners to find volunteer events/opportunities,” said Kristie Brinkley, assistant director of Student Activities with Volunteer Services.

The timing of the spring Volunteer Fair happened to overlap with the Martin Luther King Jr. events on campus.

“Martin Luther King was all about service so it just falls naturally and works well together,” Brinkley said.

Students will be able to walk around the atrium and talk to different groups to get educated on how they can help.

Brinkley said there will be lots of information at the tables, from flyers to brochures and people to talk to about the different organizations.

“They’ll have a sign-up sheet where students can sign up individually or as a group and then that agency can get back in touch with them to help with their volunteer opportunities,” Brinkley said.

The Volunteer Fair has taken place at UCM for over 20 years.

“I think it’s very important for people to get involved because it enhances their journey as a person and/or student, etc.,” she said. “It makes a person well-rounded and helps them to explore the world around them.”

Megan Eagan, junior pre-medical student, said she attended the fair when she was a freshman.

“I remembered being overwhelmed with

the possibilities of making a difference and getting involved,” Eagan said.

A good way for people to network and make friends is by going to the fair.

Eagan said she has made a lot of her friends from college through volunteer work. She has also practiced better time management.

“Being involved, for whatever reason, makes me manage my time better and enjoy school that much more,” Eagan said.

“It makes me enjoy school because it puts in perspective how much education truly is a privilege, and there are a lot of people that don’t get an opportunity to get a higher education.”

Brinkley said volunteering is a holistic experience.

“Volunteering helps a person by giving back, gaining leadership skills, feeling a sense of accomplishment and cultivates a commitment to service that will be with you always,” Brinkley said.

The fair is meant to focus on helping those who live around us.

“We are all humans and we all need help at one point or another in our lifetime, so I hope I’ve made a difference in someone’s

life who was in need of some help,” Eagan said.

Numerous organizations will be at the fair in need of volunteers.

Powell Gardens, nursing centers, Knob Noster State Park, Paws-4-Autism and the Warrensburg Parks & Recreation Department are just a few of the groups scheduled to be in attendance.

The Center brings students together Garrett Fuller

Assistant Design Editor The University of Central Missouri is home to more than 12,000 students who come from a variety of backgrounds. The diversity on campus spans cultural and ethnic differences, different religious beliefs and a wide array of sexual orientations.

The Multicultural and Inclusivity Center, often called “The Center,” offers support for students of all backgrounds on campus. The Center also offers a space for students to connect and unwind, as well as host discussions and meetings.

Lover Chancler, assumed the role of director of The Center in August 2018. Chancler has also served as an assistant professor in child and family development for the past five years. Chancler was involved in the initial launch of The Center in fall 2016, when she suggested a retreat for all student groups to connect and collaborate during her time as advisor for Sisters of Ujima.

Chancler said The Center serves as a support system for nearly 20 student groups, such as the Association of Black Collegiates, Student Organization of Latinos and PRISM, a student group supporting LGBT students. In addition to supporting student groups, The Center supports some of the Divine Nine Greek chapters, which are traditionally African American Greek chapters.

“They (student groups) will have meetings over here and we can help partner with them for programming and things like that,” she said.

Chancler said programs The Center contributed to include the Martin Luther King Jr. “Let’s Talk” event, Martin Luther King Jr. week festivities and PRISM’s “Gaypril” and lavender graduation ceremonies.

In addition, Chancler said The Center is planning an open forum for Black History Month in Februrary.

Chancler said one of her goals was to provide a way for students to succeed by connecting with other students.

“Ultimately, I want all students to feel included. I think oftentimes when you are at a university where you’re not the majority, oftentimes you have difficulty finding your niche (a place to fit in),” Chancler said.

“What we want to do is provide a niche for those students, so that way they stay connected. We know the more connected students are socially to their environment, the better they’re going to perform and the more likely they’re going to want to stay.”

In order to fulfill the goal, The Center has grown to become a place for students to unwind and connect with each other. Jay Todd, a graduate assistant for The Center studying college student personnel administration, has been instrumental in making the change.

“With the help of my graduate assistant, there are a lot of times where we play video games up here between classes or after classes,” Chancler said. “We have a lot of students who don’t go home for the weekends, so he’ll open up The Center over the weekend and they’ll come over and play some games and hang out with one another and talk and connect — be that support system away from home for a lot of our smaller student groups who are minority students here on campus.”

Todd hosts weekly discussions dubbed “Todd Talks” on topics including scholarships, financial aid and relationships.

“We try to do as much as we can to help some of those new things that they’re experiencing or old things they’re experiencing while they’re here on campus,” Chancler said.

UCM’s ‘Step Forward’ set to be performed at Region V. Kennedy Center American Festival Erin Wides Features Editor

The University of Central Missouri’s Theatre and Dance production “Step Forward” has been selected as one of five productions to be performed at the Region V Kennedy Center American Festival.

The department has performed at the festival before, most recently in 2013 for “Blue Window.” This year’s festival starts on Sunday and goes through Saturday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In order to keep out-of-pocket travel expenses as low as possible, the department is hosting a benefit performance of “Step Forward” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Highlander Theater.

The show was originally produced in spring 2018.

“Step Forward” was written by the student cast under co-direction of UCM professors Ashley Miller-Scully and Julie Rae Mollenkamp, according to a news release.

Miller-Scully said the show was inspired by an internet meme she found with social justice phrases on it including, “Immigrants make America great, Love is Love and Black Lives Matter.”

She and Mollenkamp presented the idea to the students who then began the writing process.

Miller-Scully said they are one of two devised works, out of the 50 enterants, which means the entire production is original work.

“It combines dance, acting, dialogue, music and poetry,” according to the press release.

John Wilson, theatre department chair and professor, said it’s more of a movement piece than a traditional dance piece.

“It has original music and it was staged in the round and it has some spoken word

in it and a lot of projections. We have like three different video screens,” Wilson said.

Staged in the round means that the audience surrounds the stage, so the chairs are placed in a circle around the central staged area. “‘Step Forward’ will perform for nearly 1,500 students/professors and professionals at the festival,” Miller-Scully said.

The department’s professors said they are excited for the opportunity and proud of the students’ hard work.

“We are honored and overjoyed to be one of only five productions selected to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Region V Festival,” Mollenkamp said via the press release. “The combination of dance, singing, spoken word and images connects our humanitarianism with

our patriotism and promotes the notion of radical empathy, love in the face of hate.

The faculty are so proud and inspired by our students.”

Ashton Bennett, sophomore musical theatre major and choreographer/performer in the show, said it’s an honor to be chosen to perform at the festival.

“We have very strong work to show this region and our peers,” Bennett said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so excited to be a part of it.”

Freedom Scholarship founder recalls creating first UCM African-American scholarship Colby Crowder For the Muleskinner

The Freedom Scholarship is awarded every year at the University of Central Missouri in conjunction with the university and its alumni foundation. The scholarships are awarded at the Freedom Scholarship Dinner, an event hosted by the university where proceeds are used to fund the scholarships. Arthur D. Kemp, associate professor of psychological science at UCM, helped create the scholarship.

Colby Crowder: When was the Freedom Scholarship Fund founded?

Arthur Kemp: It was the fall semester of 1994 that I found out during a faculty meeting that there were no scholarships for African American students at this university and that the university had no plans to initiate one. That concerned me in the light of the fact that there were other universities in the state that had scholarships for black students, including MU (University of Missouri).

CC: How was funding originally provided for the award?

AK: I was president of the Association of African American Faculty and Staff, which was something that I started. I brought the information (about the scholarship) to the association and as a result I asked if anyone wanted to stand with me to start a scholarship fund for African American college students here at the university and they did.

We raised $40 that day and established the Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship.

CC: How did you and your organization grow the funding for the scholarship?

AK: We had to come up with a way to generate funds for the scholarship, so Dr. Zinna Bland came up with the idea of a dinner. Then the first dinner to raise money for the scholarship was in January 1996.

Shirley Briscoe came up with the idea of the gospel program, so we had the program and the scholarship dinner. Two separate

programs and they are still to this day two separate events.

CC: How has the event grown since the initial planning?

AK: The university president would host a luncheon on that day (when the Freedom Scholarship was awarded) for faculty and invited faculty and guests to that luncheon.

The president, Ed Elliott, came to our first dinner and he donated the first check. He was the first donor for the scholarship outside of the members of the Association of African American Faculty and Staff. He gave me a check and that is how it started.

CC: What was the initial award for the scholarship?

AK: The first year that we gave the scholarship was 1997. We gave $100 to three undergraduate African American students. Three or four years after that, we (the Association of African American Faculty and Staff) disbanded and Dr. Elliott gave the approval for the university to take over generating funds for the scholarship.

That’s when the university administration started running it and getting in larger corporations. By 2000, they started bringing in corporations as donors.

CC: Who typically speaks at the scholarship dinner?

AK: One year, we got Sodexo and a major owner in Sodexo. Magic Johnson came here courtesy of Sodexo and he was our speaker. Recently, like over the past four years, the university has gotten away from bringing in outside speakers and turned to inviting graduates of UCM. These were people who graduated from UCM, normally who were African Americans, not necessarily people who received the scholarship, but people who are African American who are out there being successful.

A member of the community and a Warrensburg High School senior received community service awards Wednesday for helping the community in various ways.

The awards were given to Kaylee Henry, a WHS senior, and Shirley Briscoe, a volunteer coordinator for Manna Harvest at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, during the MLK Community Service Awards Luncheon at Fitt-Kickers Pub. The event was hosted by the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce and the UCM Student Experience and Engagement Office.

Henry was nominated for the award by her English teacher, Jennifer Fowler, for the humanitarianism she has shown in her high school class.

“It made me really grateful for my community...and I felt really honored, too,” Henry said during a Muleskinner interview.

“I feel like we live in a very progressive community already but I feel like there are more changes to be made and if I can help them myself, then why wouldn’t I?” THE CENTER, continued from Page 4 Todd said The Center holds an important role on campus.

“It gives a place for any student of any cultural background, ethnic background, any orientation of whatever sort to come up here and be themselves,” Todd said. “You have a space. It’s a safe space. It’s a free space. It’s a place where you can come do your homework, you can hang out with your friends.”

Todd said feedback regarding The Center has been great.

“Students love it,” Todd said. “The direction we’ve been heading in has been more student-based than anything.

Students love coming up here… As far as feedback that we have got from people on campus, it’s been changing the climate of how this campus used to be.”

Henry spoke at the Lafayette County Juneteenth festival on June 22 in Higginsville, Missouri, to celebrate the abolishment of slavery and acknowledge local African-American citizen accomplishments.

She was invited to speak by the chairman of the NAACP. On their way back from the festival, they got into a car accident that resulted in her spending three months in the hospital on life support. She had to have emergency surgery, and she had to learn how to walk, talk, eat and breathe right again.

“I didn’t take it as a misfortune, though,” she said. “It just made me realize how grateful I am and how blessed I am to have my family, my friends, my community and all the people around me. It just made me want to do even more in my community.”

Henry said it is important for everyone to remember MLK to inspire people to make changes in their towns.

“MLK: a great man who started a change that we all needed to see,” she said. “He’s also an inspiration to anyone who wants to make a change in our world. I feel like that’s why it’s important for us to remember him on this day and all the rest of our lives...He’s a great man to be remembered.”

As volunteer coordinator for Manna Harvest, Briscoe helps feed people through the Nehemia Feeding Program five nights a week at the Shilo Missionary Baptist Church.

Tiscle worked at UCM for 30 years as a laboratory technician at the UCM Health Center. Her past co-worker, Ginny Mctighe, is the one who nominated her for this award due to the services that Briscoe provides for the community.

Briscoe has reached out for volunteers from the UCM community, such as fraternities and sororities, to serve food at the church, along with many other church members around the area and senior citizens.

“We serve them restaurant style and we treat them just like going out to a restaurant,” Briscoe said. “We treat them and we talk to them and we wait on them. It’s not just the homeless that we feed. It’s peo-

On the first and third Saturdays of the month, Tiscle said Manna Harvest does senior commodities and food giveaways.

She said people line up at 6:30 a.m. from the corner of Main Street all the way down to Market Street. They don’t get out of the cars as the volunteers hand people the packages.

“I feel blessed and fortunate. I feel like I have a connection,” she said. “It makes me feel good that I can reach out and help...

That was instilled to me by my mom, about giving. I always gave and I look for nothing in return.”

Briscoe said she wants to bring a homeless shelter back to Warrensburg. The town had a shelter called the Destiny House that closed down about three months ago. She said it was sold and will now be used as a drug rehab facility. She said she is worried about the homeless sleeping in the woods around town during the cold months.

“We don’t have a shelter anymore. They have nothing. Nowhere to go,” she said. “I just wish we could get together and find some land and build something...I just wish

we could find somewhere and get them off the street...it would make a big difference.”

Casey Lund, mayor pro tem and the guest speaker, said the community service awards are important becuase they inspire others to volunteer in their communities.

“It’s paying homage to those folks that put in so much work and so much effort.

It’s great to acknowledge their efforts and encourage them to keep doing them, and also to let others know and be inspired by what they do,” Lund said. “If they see that here today they are able to have the huge impact that they do, then maybe it will make them think twice about making their own contribution or impact in our community.”

Lund said people need to remember Martin Luther King’s message more than once a year.

“It would be great if we learned his teaching and principles more often, but at a minimum we are able to do it every year at this event,” he said. “We are able to see some of the changes and effects that other people like Shirley and Kaylee have done in the community.”

Assistant Design Editor Three students who were expelled nearly 50 years ago were honored with honorary doctorate degrees during the fall 2018 commencement ceremony.

The students, Sentwali Aiyetoro (formerly David Walter Brown,) Kenneth Kamau King and Burnele Venable Powell, were expelled in spring 1969 after bringing members of the Black Panther Party to the Student Union.

Jeff Murphy, assistant director of Integrated Marketing and Communications, said former President Chuck Ambrose

proposed awarding the honorary degrees to the three students. The Board of Governors approved the request to honor the three former students at the fall 2018 commencement.

“As members of the education community, they challenged the status quo by standing up for justice and racial equality, qualities they carried into their respective professional lives,” President Roger Best said during the commencement ceremony.

“Their persistence in seeking justice for individuals and the pursuit of opportunities to improve other people’s lives eventually led them into careers in law and service activities that benefit people in the United States and across the globe.”

Nearly 50 years ago, Aiyetoro, King and Powell led different lives. Aiyetoro and King both co-founded the Association of Black Collegians and were members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Their lives would change Feb. 20, 1969, after a peaceful meeting went awry.

According to a chronological recount of the meeting found in the McClure Archives, the peaceful meeting with the Black Panther Party turned chaotic when Tom Edmunds, former dean of students, ordered the Student Union to be vacated within five minutes. While many students left, Aiyetoro, King and Powell remained after seeing students refusing to leave.

“I walked out and there was still bowling

going on, still pool being played, cards being played,” King said in an archival video produced by KMOS-TV in conjunction with Integrated Marketing and Communications. “There were activities going on in the Union. So I go back in and say, ‘The Union is not closed. Everybody else is out there.’”

After finally being forced to leave, King recalled having to walk among a thick line of law enforcement officials, including his own deputized law enforcement classmates.

“To walk through that was like an eye-opener for me,” King said.

Roadblocks were also established at the fringes of Warrensburg.

Many Central Missouri State College students questioned the actions of administrators and held meetings throughout the following week to gather answers.

In the end, Aiyetoro, King and Powell were among a group of students expelled from the university. Additionally, a purge was conducted to remove faculty who participated in the incident. Ray Peterson, an English professor, was notified his contract would not be renewed for 1969-70 after being present at the Student Union incident and accompanying Aiyetoro to Edmund’s office.

“After they expelled us, there was a purge amongst the faculty also,” King said.

“Those people who supported the Association of Black Collegians at the time, I think, they also came under fire.”

After the three students were expelled from CMSC in March 1969, they all pursued an education in the legal field.

According to the commencement program, Brown, who changed his name to Sentwali Aiyetoro in the mid-1970s, received a four-year degree from CMSC due to having enough credit hours to receive the degree. He continued his education, receiving a Juris Doctor degree in 1972 from the University of Kansas School of Law. While at the University of Kansas, Aiyetoro helped found the Black Law Students Association, a group supporting the needs of black law students.

After receiving his doctorate, Aiyetoro

embarked on a career of serving others.

He then moved to Texas, where he assisted people who did not have the financial means to pay for legal assistance. Aiyetoro continued to work for organizations such as the Legal Services of North Carolina and the Development Training Institute.

In 1994, Aiyetoro was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. After leading a physically active lifestyle and devoting a career to serving the public, Aiyetoro died Feb. 22, 2017. His daughter, Tracy Ramos, received the posthumous honorary degree on his behalf.

King finished his degree at the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1970 before pursuing a law degree at Howard University School of Law. He graduated from Howard University in 1973, where he later was named “Alumnus of the Year” in 2006.

Powell also continued his education, earning a Master of Law from Harvard Law School in 1979. Powell became a member of the Wisconsin and Massachusett state bars, contributed to several prominent academic legal journals and dedicated 10 years to teaching at the University of South Carolina School of Law. “They had wonderful careers,” Murphy said. “They’ve always stood up for what they believed in, and they devoted their lives seeking justice for others. And they certainly set a good example for our students to emulate.”

When I hear the word “dream” I think, big, bold, daring. I think, support and hard work. I know it takes a strong person to follow their dreams. It takes someone who knows they have a burning desire in them and an idea worth sharing with others.

To speak those dreams into the universe is just the start to making them happen.

Finding people to support you along your journey is the next step.

“I have a dream…”

Martin Luther King Jr. shared these words, and many others, with more than 250,000 people in August 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington.

Since then they have been shared with so many more people and offer hope and inspiration.

I think this speech is one of the most powerful in our nation’s history. It shows that someone, like Dr. King, had the burning desire to share his voice, advocate for others and be a catalyst for change.

Some people didn’t support him in any way, and that will happen. But more importantly, he got people on his side to help follow through with his dreams.

One of his lines, “...even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.” This to me feels like something I need to remind myself of dai-

W

hile the campus and wider community will celebrate the upcoming MLK holiday, students in the Africana Studies program do not only celebrate this day, but “the man and his message” every day. The Center for Africana Studies in Wood 110 is an incubator for resources and opportunities to explore race, citizenship and equality, treasured ideals of the late Dr. King. One of Dr. King’s famous quotes sums up beautifully the heart and soul of Africana Studies: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The campus community can enroll in courses, attend lectures and symposia, participate in the award-winning student organization, the Africana Studies Leadership Council (ASLC), or study abroad for a global perspective. Don’t forget Dr. King was a 1964 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in civil rights and social justice.

I think with the New Year being here and a lot of people making resolutions (also, here is your check-in...are you keeping to them?) we want to make changes.

Whether it be changes in our own lives or to help better those around us. We want to have a “fresh slate,” a new start to the new year.

I’m sure you’ve seen these phrases everywhere about “Do we really stick to our resolutions?” “Tips and tricks for becoming the best you in 2019.” Well, you’re in luck (for real this time) because I am here to challenge you.

Unless you have religiously been sticking to resolutions, big congratulations, let’s start fresh now.

In 2019, I challenge you to come up with

a dream or two.

Let’s be clear that one way “dream” is defined, by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “a strongly desired goal or purpose.”

One of the definitions for “resolution” is, “Something that is resolved.”

Dream just sounds more empowering.

So, please, do me a favor and, in the end, yourself a favor and pick a dream. Make a plan as to how you will work to accomplish it each day. If you want, write to us at the muleskinner@ucmo.edu let us know your dream. We can feature them, maybe have an accountability aspect.

Holding yourself accountable or having a buddy or team can make all the difference.

view. This location is where on Jan. 20, 1486, Christopher Columbus first met with Queen Isabella to seek funding for his explorations. Columbus is a complicated historical figure revered in some circles and detested in others.While the new world exploration brought wealth, glory and fame to many European nations, it brought devastation to indigenous populations and opened the floodgates of what would become chattel slavery with the displacement or death of nearly 30 million people from the African continent. In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas essentially divided the new world between Portugal and Spain and “asiento de negros” or permission soon followed that gave license to trade enslaved Africans. Students are analyzing primary historical documents and are debating the pros and cons of Columbus Day versus Indigenous People’s Day. Based on Dr. King’s message and teachings, I think he would argue for an Indigenous People’s Day. Therefore, in celebrating Dr. King, we also have to remember that Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain and the United States were the largest beneficiaries of the transatlantic slave trade.

Whole economies flourished because of it.

To that end, UCM students will be participating in the African Lisbon Walking Tour that teaches students about Portugal’s dominance in trading nearly 5 million Africans

to modern day Brazil. Yet, in Lisbon and Porto you might never know any of this happened without reading a history book.

It also helps students better understand African immigration issues in Europe, as well as modern day slavery and human trafficking. All issues, that if Dr. King were alive, he would protest vehemently.

While this column cannot do justice to any of the issues raised, I invite you to make the Center of Africana Studies a place where you can talk, debate and learn in the best traditions of Dr. King as we celebrate what would have been his 90th birthday. The Africana Studies Leadership Council meets every Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Freedom Scholarship dinner brings community together Anaiyeh Smith

Social Media Coordinator The university is scheduled to host the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Scholarship dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom.

The keynote speaker is UCM alumnus Robert N. Page, former executive director for equity and inclusion at Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City.

The dinner is a part of an annual celebration in collaboration with the Warrensburg community members and is an opportunity to reflect on the work and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., according to a news release.

The winners of the 2019 Freedom Scholarship, Arlanda Brown, K’Ron Richardson and Mariah Woodson, will also be honored during the event.

Arlanda Brown is a 22-year-old senior from St. Louis, majoring in sociology with a minor in Africana Studies.

Brown said she filled out an application using MoCents and the site paired her with over 30 scholarships.

“That was it, everything was already applied for me,” Brown said. “I really didn’t have to do anything after that, and thank God”

Brown said everyone should apply for scholarships available to them.

“I try to get my education as close to free as possible,” she said. “I would definitely tell people to apply for scholarships, even scholarships that you don’t think that you would qualify for. Just apply to everything because even some of the things that you think you’d never be able to get, you do.”

Brown said she knows the other winners, Woodson and Richardson, from class and is excited for the banquet because she never knew there was a banquet to honor the winners of the scholarship. Woodson and Richardson were unable to be reached for comment.

Ed Wirthwein, director of mentoring advocacy and peer support, said Freedom Scholarship winners are chosen by a vote of UCM Alumni Foundation scholarship committee.

Tickets for the Freedom Scholarship Dinner are available for purchase at the UCM Student Experience and Engagement Office in Room 214 of the Administration Building or through the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce at 100 S. Holden St. Proceeds from tickets purchased are used to continue funding of the Freedom Scholarship.

Mules look to gain momentum behind return of Lowrance Jason Brown Managing Editor

It has been a season of streaks for Mules basketball, which has lost two straight contests after picking up four consecutive victories over the holiday break.

Prior to the four-game winning streak that started with a 76-75 triumph over NAIA opponent MidAmerica Nazarene, the Mules had lost three games in a row and appeared to be reeling without the presence of senior forward Jakob Lowrance, who was lost to a leg injury back in November. Lowrance missed seven games but made his return in a Jan. 3 win over Fort Hays State. The Mules went 3-4 in his absence.

“They thought it was a torn ACL, but luckily it wasn’t,” Lowrance said. “Now it’s about working on it and getting it as close to 100 percent as we can.”

Lowrance said he was able to see the game differently and gain perspective in his seven games on the end of the bench.

“It taught me a lot and showed me some things that I don’t notice while I’m playing,” he said. “I was able to see a lot of things and could help our guys with what I saw from the bench. Almost like taking it from the perspective of being a coach and a leader.”

Since returning to the lineup, Lowrance has averaged 15 points per game in four contests where the Mules went 2-2.

“I would like shoot it a little bit better,” Lowrance said. “I’m still trying to get my wind back, get in shape and in the flow of things. A lot of that is just seeing things from the bench and realizing I need to take my time more. I feel like I’ve been more patient with my back to the basket and seeing different things in the defense, knowing where the double team’s coming from and thinking about where the next guy is going to be.”

Lowrance said no one is hanging their head on the record and that the focus is on improvement.

“We have to get better,” he said. “Ev-

erybody realizes we’re not where we want to be right now. We have to come together and play better team ball, make shots as individuals and finish out games because we’ve lost some close winnable games.”

Despite losing on the road to Pittsburg State Saturday, Lowrance became the 21st Mule to join the 1,000-point club. Lowrance said he didn’t know how close he was until the week before when his dad told him.

“My dad called me and told me he was trying to make it out to these games,” he said. “I knew he wanted to come to as many games as he could since it’s my last year, but he usually doesn’t come by himself. So he told me he was going to try and fly my mom out to Pitt. I asked him why, but he wanted to keep it a secret. At some point they ended up telling me I was close to hitting 1,000.”

Lowrance said hitting the milestone wasn’t on his mind during the game.

“It was in the back of my head, but honestly, going into Pitt, I didn’t think about it at all,” he said. “I had totally forgotten about it until coach (Chris) Richardson shouted me out in our post-game talk. It was super bittersweet because I was frustrated about the game.”

Lowrance is the first four-year player in head coach Doug Karleskint’s tenure at UCM and expected himself be a player who could achieve 1,000 points since he arrived.

“When it happens, even in a loss, it’s still pretty surreal,” Lowrance said. “You think about all of those points and all of the time you put in, being here for four years, it has been great.”

Jennies work to adapt in top-heavy conference Jason Brown Managing Editor

Jennies basketball lost just one MIAA game in the 2017-2018 regular season when they won the National Championship. The Jennies have dropped three games in the first six contests of the conference slate this season, setting up a more difficult road to the postseason.

At 10-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, the Jennies are in fifth place in the MIAA. Their in-conference losses came to Fort Hays State, Washburn and most recently Pittsburg State on Saturday. Each of those teams sits above the Jennies in the conference standings — both Fort Hays and Washburn are undefeated.

“I think we’ve got probably four teams that are really good right now,” said Jennies head coach Dave Slifer in a phone interview. “You’ll see one of those teams Saturday in Lindenwood. They only have one loss, but they have a point guard and a post that are all conference type kids.

In the three losses, the Jennies have struggled to get more than two or three of their starters going in the point column with the majority of the scoring coming from senior guard Paige Redmond and junior forwards Megan Skaggs and Morgan Fleming.

Slifer said the Jennies struggled to spread the offense out and score in their loss Saturday to the Gorillas and had to adjust accordingly.

“We got into an issue with Pitt (on Saturday) where we had all kinds of trouble scoring,” Slifer said. “We went ahead and let Paige (Redmond) catch a bunch of ball screens and try to make plays. It got us back in the game but it certainly wasn’t winning us the game. We don’t particularly like playing that way because we had four assists in the game and you’re not going to beat a lot of teams that way.”

Redmond is averaging 17 points while Fleming and Skaggs average 13 points per game.

“We kind of call them the ‘Big 3,’ and

they are,” Slifer said. “They have been through the rigors of the MIAA and understand that it’s not easy.”

The Jennies had only one loss on their record at this point last season and having four in January has created new challenges for the team.

“I think it has been tough on everybody.

You kind of start doubting yourself,” Slifer said. “Right now we have the second highest strength-of-schedule in the country and so we haven’t given ourselves any easy games to feel good about ourselves.”

Slifer said the weight of defending a national championship has been felt by everyone, but they knew it would be something that hangs around.

“A lot of teams we talked to that have won national titles told us that it (defending the national championship) is a grind,” he said. “You have to reinvent what you’re doing because you probably don’t have the same personnel. Even if you do, it’s different the next year. It has certainly been different this year.”

Junior forward Kim Crown joined the Jennies as a transfer in the offseason and was tabbed by Slifer as a player who could improve the team’s size, rebounding and post play.

“Kim has fit in so well with this club,” Slifer said. “She has been outstanding some games and others, she’s just trying to be more consistent. I thought against Southern (17 points and eight rebounds), she was super strong in the post and did a lot of great things. The more she plays, the better she will become.”

Crown said joining the Jennies was an easy adjustment despite having to help fill a large gap in the roster.

“It’s really hard coming into this with the history they have,” she said. “It’s big shoes to fill, but this team has made it super easy for me and they make sure I can take care of business.”

Crown said the bond the Jennies have as a team is unlike anything she’s experienced before.

“I’ve never been on a team that’s this close,” she said. “I feel like no one has

The Jennies will have their hands full over the weekend as No. 24 Lindenwood will come to town. The Lions are 11-1 overall and 5-0 in MIAA under new head coach Katie Falco.

“They’ve got a new coach and their of-

fense is wide open right now,” Slifer said.

“I like their approach and the way they play. They’ve been able to string together seven wins in a row, so they’re good.”

Sports Updates Mules ranked sixth in coaches poll Mules wrestling took sixth out of six teams in the MIAA’s wrestling coaches poll after opening conference competition 0-2.

The Mules have performed well individually with grapplers placing in the top-3 of their respective weight classes on two occasions.

The next and also last nonduel competition on the Mules schedule is the annual Roger Denker Open. The action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Multipurpose Building.

Sophomore Paytynn Kuhns earned a top-20 individual finish and was the Jennies individual pin leader with 978. Freshman Stephanie Richards was the Jennies other top-50 finisher in 46th with 902 pins.

The Jennies will take a week off before heading to St. Louis for the Maryville Saints Invitational. The three-day event spans Jan. 25-27.

Volunteer services teams with Community Blood Center for MLK blood drive Madison Preston For the Muleskinner

The University of Central Missouri Volunteer Services is partnering with the Community Blood Center of Kansas City to host a blood drive. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan 30-31 in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom in conjunction with campuswide Martin Luther King Jr. events, which is centered around service.

“Dr. King was a services oriented person and in his honor, it’s a chance to ‘Help Others,’” said Kristie Brinkley, assistant director of student activities with volunteer services.

According to the Community Blood Center, one pint of donated blood can help save as many as three people’s lives. This event is one of six blood drives the univer-

sity hosts each year. Blood collected at this event will help hospital patients in the Warrensburg area.

Donors must be 16 years of age or older, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and provide photo identification or non-photo identification with first name, last name and signature.

One pint of blood can be expected to be donated and snacks will be provided afterward to avoid a drop in blood pressure. Organizers hope to collect between 100 and 150 units each day of the drive.

The blood drive is open to all students, faculty, staff and community members.

The class of 2019 will consist of: Steve Huff (football, 1982-85), Erin Alewine (Jennies track and field, 2010-14), Keuna Flax (Jennies basketball, 2012-14), Caitlin (Pankratz) Peterson (volleyball, 2005-09), Kayla Shain (soccer, 2009-12), Chance Tuttle (baseball, 2009-10) and Brent Vogel (Mules track and field, 2009-13). Coaches Kim Anderson (Mules basketball, 200214) and Tom Myers (baseball, 2008-14) as well as the 2013-14 National Champion Mules basketball team.

As a part of Hall of Fame Saturday, Mules and Jennies basketball will host a doubleheader against Missouri Western for Senior Day. The 2019 inductees will also be recognized during the afternoon at the doubleheader.

Mules, Jennies picked second in indoor track and field polls The MIAA released its indoor track and field preseason poll and both the Mules and Jennies were picked to finish second in their respective polls.

Central Missouri received 123 points in the women’s poll and 106 in the men’s.

Each team received one first-place vote.

Pittsburg State got all but one first-place vote in both polls after winning the MIAA Championship last season.

Central Missouri opened the indoor season at the Crimson and Gold Invitational in December and earned six NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

The Mules and Jennies first meet of 2019 will be at home as they host the UCM Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Building.
