NEED TO KNOW ROTC to host 5K Run/Walk The UCM Fighting Mules Battalion is hosting the second annual Patriot 5K Run and Walk in conjunction with the Student Government Association at 7 a.m. April 14 at the Audrey J. Walton Stadium.

The race is scheduled to start at 8 a.m., with registration and check-in beginning at 7 a.m. The registration fee is $30 for individuals, $50 for two-person teams and $60 for teams of three to five.

Event co-director Cris Melgar said the proceeds from the event will go toward the Warrensburg Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter and future Fighting Mules Battalion events.

Warrensburg to host food truck festival

TKE to reward FPO for hard work

The food truck scene is coming to town as UCM and the City of Warrensburg team up to host the first-ever food truck festival in Warrensburg.

The event is scheduled to take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday along Missouri Street in front of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library. In case of rain, the event will be postponed to 4-7:30 p.m.

Wednesday.

In addition to the wide variety of culinary treats from the vendors, the JCK Library will be hosting lawn games and seating for attendees, according to the event release.

Tau Kappa Epsilon is hosting a barbeque for Facilities, Planning and Operations employees from noon to 2 p.m.

“FPO employees do not get enough credit and recognition for what they do.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITIONS NOW REQUIRE JUSTIFICATION

Graduate assistantship positions at UCM now have to go through a justification process if they don’t generate revenue.

The department chairs and faculty have to fill out a justification form that gets sent to the office of Mike Godard, interim provost-chief learning officer.

Teaching assistants or auxiliary positions generate revenue, so they don’t need justification. An auxiliary position means any that students pay for, such as housing.

Any other GA position must be justified; it risks becoming an undergraduate position or a GA position that is paid hourly with no stipend or tuition waiver.

“There is a big cost difference between the two, because paying someone an hourly wage to do a specific task for a job as compared to a GA position, which pays a stipend to an individual, but in addition to that it covers tuition as well,” Godard said.

Godard said he’s approved all of the positions he’s gotten sent to his office so far. He said he’s been getting the forms daily.

“I've approved some. I’m not saying it’s not going to happen, OK so don’t get me wrong on this but as of yet, the ones that I’ve received, iv’e not denied any of them,” Godard said.

Godard predicts that 30 to 50 GA positions might be converted to an undergraduate position or a GA hourly worker position.

He said the GA hourly worker positions could range from $10 to $15 per hour, depending on the position.

“I've had several roll in this week,” he said. “As long as there’s a justification and it’s there in which it’s going to help serve our students in one way, shape or form.”

Stephen Jackson, a graduate assistant for the communication department, teaches two courses and is the primary instructor.

His position generates revenue, but he said

these considerations are a bad idea.

“I think anything that removes potential grad students’ funding is not helpful in the current environment...That poses the question of, ‘OK, now do we make that person maybe try to get them helping a professor with grading so that they are attached to revenue on top of all their duties already, so they can save the position?’”

Jackson said because of the proposed reorganization of the universitie's colleges from four to three, the communication department might not bring back as many teaching assistants regardless of the decisions.

“With that going on, on top of everything else, I would say there’s a lot of people that should be very, very nervous about whether they're going to get their position,” he said.

“It may be that they only fill so many of us back after. They may only be allowed to have...five of us up here now, they may only bring back four. I don’t know what their plan is for any of that.”

Brenton Mitchell, a graduate student in the communication department, is also a teaching assistant.

“I think regardless any way you look at it, if you’re getting rid of those positions, less people are going to actually attend graduate school at UCM,” Mitchell said. “Which therefore means that education suffers because people aren’t able to further their education.”

Dustin Davis, a graduate teaching assistant in the department of nutrition and kinesiology, said he feels that graduate positions are viewed as dispensable.

“This is saddening because these positions are critical opportunities to help students bridge the gap between undergraduate study and engagement in Master’s coursework,” he said. “For many students, grad-

uate education is otherwise unaffordable without assistance.”

Davis said as a body, it’s important that GAs communicate their concerns and responsibilities with upper level administrators.

“GA’s must make faculty and administrators aware of their importance at the department and campus level,” he said.

“Furthermore, it is critically important that graduate assistants make genuine attempts to fulfill each of their assigned duties. GA positions should not be viewed as a free education. We have work to do.”

Godard said if there are graduate students who are in their first year of graduate studies and came to UCM with the expectation they were going to have a graduate assistantship, they still have that position.

“Any student who currently has a GA position, we are committed to ensuring that those continue,” he said. “These would just be for new potential student GAs starting in the fall of 2018.”

Fake money is nearly as old as money itself, with many famous counterfeiters trying to make it rich from all across the world. However, counterfeit bills have been hitting close to home, with over $700 in fraudulent bills being located in Warrensburg.

Since January, 34 counterfeit bills in varying denominations have been found at various locations throughout Warrensburg including stores and on the street.

Counterfeit bills have been discovered at multiple local businesses. The largest amounts were recovered at Home Rentals on Feb. 2 with $200, and Central Bank of Warrensburg on March 12 with

$170. Individuals have also discovered counterfeit bills dropped at various locations.

Rich Lockhart, chief of the Warrensburg Police Department, said they are currently working with the United States Secret Service to investigate the trend, according to Warrensburg police chief Rich Lockhart. The Secret Service was unable to comment on the case progress.

No progress has currently been made on solving the case, other than possibilities of obtaining video surveillance.

Lockhart also said that the trend hasn’t been the only counterfeit money use in the area.

“It comes and goes in waves,” said Lockhart.

He said that one former trend of counterfeit money made use of Monson Mon-

ey – or movie money, which are special bills printed to imitate the look of real bills but are printed for movie prop use only.

Another former trend consisted of fake bills spread around Warrensburg and Sedalia, which was traced back to a group in Kansas City who printed the bills on a home inkjet printer.

Determining authenticity While counterfeit bills are currently rampant in the area, there are many easy methods in determining the authenticity of a bill.

The most common and easiest sign is a hidden strip which bills $5 and above contain. The location of the vertical strip varies in different denominations, and

can typically only be spotted if the bill is held in front of a light source. Under a blacklight, this strip glows different colors depending on denomination.

Less common signs include color-changing ink found on $20 and above bills, other hidden watermarks, and the print quality.

For uncertainties, consumers are advised to visit their local bank or police department to get a second opinion on whether the bill is authentic or a fake.

Beverly McKenna, branch manager for Central Bank of Warrensburg, said all tellers are trained on determining the authenticity of bills.

Not an easy read, but an important one: California professor shares her sexual abuse experience

A California professor is sharing her experiences involving the #MeToo movement through her first memoir.

J.K. Stein, a victim of sexual abuse, wrote “The Director: A Memoir” using raw journal entries she kept while experiencing abuse from an unnamed, but popular movie director who said he would feature her in a film.

“It is a series of journal entries that I wrote basically from the time that I met him up to my very last meeting with him which was in 2013,” Stein said. “They're raw – I did not edit them.”

She said she knows the subject is sensitive and can be uncomfortable, but it was important for her to write the book and important for others to read about experiences like hers.

“It's not easy to read, but I hope people push through that difficulty because even though these things aren't comfortable,

they are still important,” Stein said.

The book has a foreword that explains why Stein decided to write the book, continues with the journal entries and ends with an epilogue that updates readers on where she is today, mentally and emotionally.

“I let the reader just kind of sit with the raw journal entries,” she said. “I save my opinion until the end. There is something interesting about taking the journey with me.”

Stein said she knew after her first interaction with The Director that she had to keep track of what was happening because she wanted it to be part of her life story one day.

“The very first date that The Director and I went on was so bizarre, and if you read the book, the first and second chapters outline that,” she said. “I left the date to go home feeling like I needed to write all of this down, but I didn't know why.”

The first chapter of Stein’s book says The Director continuously brought up sex while also popping white pills in his

mouth throughout the conversations. “‘This is beautiful. This is absolutely perfect. I mean you, you are beautiful.

Ravishing. Intelligent. Sexual. Overwhelmingly sexual…’ He gazed longingly into my eyes. This terrified me. There was nothing behind his. Maybe madness.

Maybe a deep abyss. Maybe just a wall.

Whether it was from lack of sleep or pure delusion, his eyes appeared frozen, glasslike,” Stein says in chapter one – her first meeting with The Director.

She started writing an article-length piece, and in the process of writing it, realized there was enough information for a whole book.

“I decided to find the journals I kept during this time, and I reread them; I hadn't reread them before,” she said. “It was my first time opening them. It was painful to read what I had went through, and I realized that this was what I needed to do for me at this point in my life. It was also an important story to share in its raw form and to not sugarcoat it.”

Stein said this book goes further than a

victim-abuser story.

“It's not just about sexual abuse,” she said. “It’s about where my head was at the time and certain things I struggled with and why I made the decisions I did. It's important for people to see that it's not just about an abuser and a victim, it’s a much more complicated scenario.”

Stein said she thinks the most important thing a victim of sexual abuse can do to help heal is to not keep things to themselves and recognize that they aren’t alone.

“One can feel very alone and reading this might feel like a sort of hand holding in a way, like you're not alone, other people have been there too and it's okay to share these experiences,” she said. “Speak up, speak out and know what your boundaries are.”

Seniors start reaching for the stars with the semester winding down

Some are calm, some are excited and some are panicking. It sounds like a typical April at a university for seniors.

Commencement is creeping up on the University of Central Missouri, so some seniors have been using their knowledge and connections to land jobs and internships.

Kameren Huffman, a criminal justice major, plans on starting his career in law enforcement. He is currently in the hiring process with multiple police departments in the area.

Huffman said he came to UCM as a psychology major at first, but then switched over to criminal justice when he decided psychology just wasn’t for him.

“I have greatly enjoyed all of my criminal justice courses. Professor Gasaway (Tony Gasaway, assistant professor in criminal justice) has been a huge influence during my time here,” Huffman said.

“He is always willing to help a student that needs it and takes feedback really well when it comes to his classes.”

Huffman said he hopes to have settled with a police department and have reached the sergeant level within 10 years. Huffman said he wants to continue to work the road, but he also wants to help lead other officers.

He said it’s important for students to get involved and take every opportunity they are given.

“Sign up for the study abroad programs, get involved with organizations and develop a good working relationship with your professors,” he said. “But most of all, ask for help - there are no reasons for every student not to be successful.”

Bryan Dotson, a design and drafting technology major, is also on track to start working after graduation, but has big plans for his personal life as well.

“My plans after graduating are to start working at Burns & McDonnell, buy a

house and get married to my best friend, Melody Dixon. This is a busy year for me,” he said.

He said he hopes to be working toward a management position and have a couple of kids in 10 years.

Dotson said he had one professor in particular, Jane Minihan, who truly encouraged him during his time at UCM. “She taught most of the product design courses for the CADD (computer aided design and drafting) department as well as a few others,” he said. “Her high standards for learning and detail are some of the things that helped me see what it would take to be a designer.”

He said he thinks it’s necessary for students to find something that drives them and propels them forward in life.

“My advice for underclassmen in the drafting program is to find something they are excited about and go after it,” Dotson said. “The people who succeed are those who pursue their passions and use them to positively impact others.”

Dotson said his time at UCM taught him about himself just as much as it taught him curriculum.

“As a freshman, I only really had two post-grad goals, and they were to graduate and get a job,” he said. “Since then, I have learned more about myself and the person that I want to be, which helped me drive myself to do things that I never expected doing.”

Dakota Persinger, a criminal justice major, used his time at UCM to stay busy and get involved. He was involved in the American Criminal Justice Association Lambda Alpha Epsilon Gamma Epsilon Delta, a criminal justice fraternity; Alpha Phi Sigma, a criminal justice honors fraternity; and Pre-Law Students Association.

Persinger plans on attending law school at either Washburn University or the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

He said that his classwork alone didn’t push him to reach his goals at UCM. “All of my success is owed to the pro-

fessors of the criminal justice department, especially Dr. Ashley Wellman, Professor Tony Gasaway, Professor Benecia Carmack and Dr. Lynn Urban,” Persinger said. “Those four people have made such an impact on me professionally and personally; I will forever be in their debt.”

He said he wants underclassmen to know they can take chances to further themselves and the words of their peers shouldn’t discourage them – they should fuel them.

Tristan Wendel, an automotive technology and design major, came to UCM make connections and land a job – he’s done just that. Tristan will be interning at Cocentrix, a health and human services software company, this June.

Wendel said he owes the inspiration he has for his field to Alex Richards, an assistant professor in the UCM School of

Technology.

“He has been a great support of my college career and has taught me so much,” Wendel said.

He hopes to head to Michigan soon to start a career with Fiat Chrysler Automotive.

Wendel said his advice to underclassmen is to stick to the recommended course guidelines when signing up for general education classes.

“I took most of my automotive class the first couple of years, and now at the end, I'm taking a few freshman gen-eds that I skipped that I now need to finish my degree,” he said.

Steven Spielberg: A Great Filmmaker

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation and possibly even of all time. Even those not familiar with the film industry have heard his name, or at least the names of the movies he’s worked on.

Whether he’s worked as director or producer, he has been a part of some memorable movies. To list out every single one would be a long list. A few examples would be “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park” and many more I’ll mention later.

Before I go on, I would like to emphasize that films are a collaborative effort, meaning there are countless people that work on each and every movie. So, giving full credit to Spielberg for the films mentioned in this article would be unfair. Also, it should be noted that not every film Spielberg made has been great. Some are mediocre and some are actually bad – every filmmaker has made at least one flop.

Now how do I write a brief article about probably the best filmmaker working in Hollywood today?

After all, many before me have written about his work and tried to analyze it. Well, I guess I should explain why I like him.

What I truly admire about Spielberg is his ability to defy expectations both for his films and for himself as a filmmaker. “Jaws” is considered to be a great film, but it has a B-movie plot. A monster shark is on the loose, attacking a beachside community during summer break; that sounds like a B-movie, doesn’t it? On top of that, the movie was a nightmare to film because they couldn’t get the stupid, mechanical shark to work. And yet, “Jaws” is fantastic. It’s suspenseful, well-acted and filled with memorable characters. In addition, “Jaws” is also thought of as one of the few movies that is actually better than the book – yes, “Jaws” was adapted from a book of the same name. To be honest, I didn’t know that before this article either.

But “Jaws” wasn’t Spielberg’s first film. Like any other filmmaker, he began from the ground up. One of his first times as director was for a made-for-TVmovie called “Duel.” It was a thriller about a motor-

ist on a remote highway being pursued by a menacing tractor trailer driven by an unseen truck driver.

The made-for-TV-movie was so good it was given a limited release to theaters in the states and abroad.

To this day, the movie is considered a master thriller, especially because it made a truck seem just as scary as a great white shark.

When coming up with the idea of “Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark,” both Spielberg and his good friend George Lucas took inspiration from pulp adventure comics that they read while growing up.

One may think of that as an almost ‘childish’ place for inspiration, until realizing how great the movie is. “Indiana Jones” is probably the best adventure franchise of all time – especially if you exclude the fourth film.

Despite being known for his more ‘family friendly’ work, Spielberg has made movies that were mature and even brutal. “Munich” followed the true story of the Israeli government trying to punish terrorists that were involved in the Munich Massacre of 1972.

Spielberg took creative care when directing “Schindler’s List,” a hard-to-watch movie that depicts the horrors of the Holocaust, which was responsible for the deaths of several of Spielberg’s own distant relatives.

Spielberg was also very passionate about making “Saving Private Ryan.” In the past and even still today, World War II has been highly misrepresented in Hollywood. Movies about it are usually action blockbusters portraying the war as heroic and glorious. Spielberg wanted to create a better representation of the war that defined his generation.

In 1998, Roger Ebert interviewed him about the film. “This is me being 51 years old and my dad being 81, and he fought in Burma,” he said. “And my wanting to acquit his war with honor, as opposed to just using his war as the backdrop for a big action adventure picture." While “Saving Private Ryan” may be overly patriotic, it still portrays one of the most authentic depictions of WWII. Its opening sequence of the D-Day landing is one the most brutally realistic battle scenes ever filmed.

er executively producing the miniseries “Band of Brothers” and its spinoff “The Pacific” – and yes, I also think it’s ironic for me to be writing about “Saving Private Ryan.”

Spielberg has had several connections with people within the film industry throughout his career, and still does. As mentioned before, he’s a friend of George Lucas, but it may be less known about his friendship with Stanley Kubrick. Like Spielberg, Kubrick is also considered to be one of the great directors – he made classics such as “Dr. Strangelove,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining.”

Although their styles of films were nothing alike, the two were friends and admired one another’s works. “Spielberg often longed to be the art house risk-taker that Kubrick was and Kubrick often longed to be the audience-pleasing sentimentalist that Spielberg was,” according to Channel Awesome’s Nostalgia Critic.

They planned to collaborate on a movie called “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” which was Kubrick’s attempt at making fairytale. Sadly, Kubrick passed away before the project could officially begin. In his honor, Spielberg decided to finish “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” himself. The movie received mixed reviews, but Spielberg did stay close to his friend’s original vision.

While much of Spielberg’s work may be on films meant as entertainment or as crowd-pleasers – I wish he made less of those – that doesn’t mean his movies are generic. After all, Mark Twain once said, “My books are like water; those of the great genius are wine. (Fortunately) everybody drinks water.” Many of Spielberg’s movies have pleased both audience members and critics, which is hard to do.

Spielberg has created movies that I’ve really enjoyed, some of which are my favorites: such as “Jaws” and “Indiana Jones” – “Raiders” or “The Last Crusade.” I’d also recommend watching “The Adventures of Tintin” – a great animated movie. He has inspired a generation to take an interest in cinema, myself included.

I was one of the 250 or so students who attended the student budget forum April 3. It took only about 45 minutes for me to start sinking into disappointment and shocked disillusionment as though I were standing in quicksand – and there were about two hours left.

President Chuck Ambrose, Interim Provost/Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard and Interim Executive Vice President and COO Roger Best were presenting the financial situation of the university and the proposed strategies for meeting financial constraints imposed by cuts in state appropriations, and what they would mean to students.

The plan was to open the floor to those in attendance to ask Ambrose, Godard and Best questions, raise concerns, or clarify anything that needed to be clarified.

For one person in attendance, the wait became intolerable. She raised her hand. Ambrose, midsentence, called on her.

“Are we going to have time to ask questions?” she said.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I’m sorry, maybe too much information and not enough dialogue.”

There were several questions about the restructuring of the colleges, the names of the colleges and how the colleges would be represented and what the value of degrees would be when the colleges had new names and structures.

Coincidentally, when the presentation was interrupted, the slide on the screen behind Ambrose had some key talking points about the restructuring and reorganization. Had we held out just a few more minutes and listened to the administrators, those questions would have been answered. The questions that remained could have been more informed and more specific and less about hurling vitriol at administrators under no obligation to divulge any of this information to us in the first place.

It bothers me that there is so much responsibility placed on administrators to come to us with information about every single nuance of their day-today decisions for two reasons. First, many of those decisions, to quote a person at the forum, go over most of our heads.

Second, and I think most importantly, they make themselves available to us. I have had hours of conversations with Ambrose, Godard and Best. Ambrose talked to me for 30 minutes while he was in the airport over the Easter weekend. The first conversation I had with Godard was over 90 minutes, and I’ve lost track of the number of emails he’s responded to that I’ve sent him requesting information, some as late as midnight. I’ve not had a conversation with Best that was shorter than an hour – one of them was over spring break.

I like to joke with people that I’m important enough to have Ambrose’s cell phone number.

You know where I got it? It’s included in his email signature. And I know that because he always emails me back.

As the forum progressed, it was evident there were many who showed up with little faith in the administration and little understanding of the situation.

The most unfortunate thing is that there were many who left with the same amount of both.

How much did we actually accomplish?

READY PLAYER ONE:

POP CULTURE ON OVERDRIVE

In 2011, Ernest Cline wrote his debut novel “Ready Player One.” After spending years in development – it takes a while in Hollywood sometimes – the film adaptation was finally released to theaters on March 29, with Cline as a co-writer for the screenplay and film icon Steven Spielberg as director/producer.

The movie takes place in the year 2044, a miserable future filled with hardship. To escape their problems, people use vital reality technology to travel to the virtual world of OASIS. There, anything is possible; you can do anything and be anyone.

The creator of this digital world, having recently passed away, has placed an Easter egg somewhere in the game; whoever finds it will inherit control of the OASIS. The film follows a young gamer named Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheridan, who goes by his gamer tag Parzival. Together with a group of fellow gamers, he tries to find the Easter egg in order to escape his life of poverty. But his quest becomes dangerous as a ruthless corporation wants the same thing.

The idea of the OASIS is creative and amazing, but the story itself is kind of predictable. If you’ve seen any other movie about rebel teenagers fighting against the system, then you have a good idea of what’s going to happen. That’s not to say that “Ready Player One” is of the same generic quality as other young adult film series. The movie does have clichés, but what movie doesn’t?

I don’t know much about computer generated images, but I thought it looked awesome in this movie. And it had to be, otherwise this movie wouldn’t have worked. During one sequence, a few scenes from “The Shining” are recreated and it looked pretty close to the original film. The world of OASIS is massive and

interesting. The worldbuilding for OASIS is done well, but more information could’ve been provided for the real world, especially about how their society works.

Very similar to “Stranger Things,” “Ready Player One” is a love letter to classic pop culture, especially from the 1980s. Gamers in the OASIS can create whatever avatars they wish: there are video game characters, movie characters and TV characters all based on classic pop culture, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This use of nostalgia sounds true to form for Ernest Cline, as he was also a co-writer for the film “Fanboys,” which was a love letter to “Star Wars” and nerd culture.

The movie, just like the book, is filled to the brim with intellectual properties, like “Halo,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Alien” and so many others. This posed a problem for the movie, as many of the rights to these properties are owned by different companies. But because Spielberg was attached to the project, the film was able to navigate through that potential minefield.

“Ready Player One” producer Donald De Line said, “Having Steven Spielberg as your director opens a jillion doors that would have been locked before,” according GIZMODO.com. Through his personal connections, and being Steven Spielberg, owners of these intellectual properties were much more willing to allow the film to use them.

It’s interesting that Spielberg was the director of this film, as some of the pop culture comes from projects he’d been a part of in the past – “Back to the Future” as one example.

My main critique of “Ready Player One” is the pop culture references can get annoying. To be fair, it is really cool to see an army of pop culture icons fighting

in a gigantic battle. However, sometimes the characters just make references nonstop about this piece of pop culture and that piece of pop culture. Some moments it feels like the movie is beating you over the head with trivia. It can be almost painful.

Although, as a fan of Quentin Tarantino films, it would be very hypocritical for me to criticize the overuse of pop culture references any further. If you know anything about his movies, all his characters ever seem to talk about is pop culture. I’ll admit, if you’ve seen my other reviews, I make plenty of pop culture references myself. I do actually enjoy listening to characters talk about pop culture, but when it’s in moderation and with more subtlety. I also feel Tarantino goes overboard sometimes with his movies, too.

Now I try to take films seriously and have educated opinions on them, but I’ll admit, there were scenes in “Ready Player One” that made my inner twelve year old very happy. There were two great action scenes that were just epic to watch, the last one made me smile with delight. My only complaint would be there weren’t more of them.

Despite my criticism, this is overall a good movie. By no means is it as great as some of Spielberg’s other films, but it’s still worth watching. It’s well acted, paced and, of course, directed. Spielberg is considered one of the all-time great directors for a reason – though he did

make “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

If OASIS was real, I would definitely buy a console and start playing – like the characters in this movie, I’d probably make it my life. This movie has some good commentary on the nature of video games. I’m not sure if “Ready Player One” is technically a video game movie, but it might as well be. After all, there are not that many good movies about video games. Whether or not you’re a gamer, this is an enjoyable film. If you’re looking for a fun movie, I do recommend “Ready Player One.” Now if you’re looking for a movie with some deeper meaning, you may or may not like this movie. There are some predictable moments and it does have other flaws. But I will say, I had a good time watching it.

What I hope for in the new SGA president

The Student Government Association sees a change in Presidents for the first time in two years.

Courtney Abt, a graduate student studying criminal justice, recently won the SGA presidency by just 11 votes above DaVonte Hair.

There’s a couple things I want her to know. I want her to know what I’m looking for when it comes to transparency, organization and their relationship with student media.

As a student journalist, we are assigned a beat. A beat is one area or topic that a journalist will cover like crime, school, businesses or government. Student journalists cover different groups or organizations on campus, such as SGA. This helps us prepare for our career and give us the skill to work our beats and write stories.

For the semester, my beat was SGA. I had the responsibility to go to their meetings to take notes on what they were up to that week, then create a couple stories out of that. I had to talk to all the SGA members, including the president.

As soon as I talked to the SGA president, I felt like a burden. Not to say that was intentional, but it was a pretty strong feeling. Our first meeting we had was right after the weekly SGA meeting one Wednesday evening. Me, him and the vice president talked about how SGA works, their budget and new legislations coming up.

They seemed prepared for me, but it felt very rushed. The attitude seemed to be, “OK, let’s show her these papers and head out.” This feeling continued throughout the entirety of my beat.

I wondered, "Could this reflect how they speak to other students who are asking them questions?" I think we deserve a president who will listen to us and give respectable attention since they represent us.

Most of the time, the SGA president didn’t want to meet in person and never talked on the phone.

Sometimes I couldn’t make their meetings to catch him after, so I would need to see him outside of those meetings. He couldn’t do that often.

There was, however, a day I was able to catch him after a weekly meeting for the second time. He and another SGA member, who happened to be Abt, agreed to give me an interview. We all sat down and I explained I needed to speak with him first, then I would ask her questions.

When I asked him the first question, which was a very basic one, he turned to Abt and said, “You wanna get this one?” Which to me, seemed like he just felt like the interview was not worth his time. I had to explain again that I needed him to answer the questions first, otherwise I couldn’t use him as a much-needed source.

Like I said, most of the time we couldn’t meet in person. Which I understand, as I’m busy too. But I prefer a phone interview at that point instead of an email interview. Phone interviews are better to do as a journalist, and email is usually a last resort.

What he had me do is type my questions on a Google Doc form and he answered them that way. This happened multiple times. No, I shouldn’t have agreed to it but at that point I felt like such a burden; I didn’t want to feel worse or get a bad grade.

Another issue was the organization. I met with one of their advisers who made it clear to me that they needed to fix the way they store documents, especially meeting minutes.

It took the adviser about 30 minutes to find what I was asking for and even then, it seemed very hard to find and not efficient.

Executive members of SGA, like the president, are paid positions. The president is there to represent the students.

They are there to listen to the students and help them out. They implement new legislation that benefits students in many ways.

What I hope for Abt and many SGA presidents to come, is better transparency, more openess with the press and improved organization.

Giacone shines in relief as Jennies continue hot streak

Nearly a month ago, Jennies softball made their home debut on the heels of a 6-12 start to the season.

The first month of the season wasn’t kind to the Jennies: As they would finally return for a home-opener against Rockhurst having lost eight of their last 10 games. It's hard to pinpoint one issue that was responsible for their shortcomings, some nights they needed more offense and others they needed better pitching.

Two one-run victories in the home-opening doubleheader marked the beginning of an 18-4 stretch that has propelled the Jens to a 24-16 record. Since opening the home portion of their schedule, the Jennies have gone 11-1 at the South Recreational Complex. The one loss came from Northwest Missouri State by one run after the Jens fell short of a seventh-inning comeback.

“Initially we lacked the confidence, and everyone was playing to keep a spot,” Jennies pitcher Katie Giacone said. “Now we’re playing to win and expect to win.”

Giacone exemplifies the Jens midseason turnaround with her transition to a relief pitching role. Prior to moving to the bullpen, Giacone owned a 4.99 ERA. After a month of pitching in relief, it's down

to 2.95. Giacone last allowed more than two runs in a game March 8 when she allowed four. Over 14 appearances, she has allowed eight runs including seven straight games without a run scoring.

Giacone was named MIAA Athlete of the Week Wednesday after she appeared four of the Jens five wins, earning the win in three of those games allowing no runs and striking out 10.

“It feels really good, I worked really hard for it so it's nice to see that paying off,” Giacone said.

The rest of the pitching staff has stepped up their game, Alexa Bradley has chipped her ERA down to 3.25 from 5.25. In her last outing against Northeastern State, she threw five innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts.

“Now we have more of a pitching staff, so we can use everyone’s strengths as a benefit to the team,” Giacone said. “We can throw with confidence knowing that if it doesn’t work, then we can back each other up.”

The offense has consistently scored runs managing at least four in all but over this three-game stretch. Corner outfielders Taylor Dames and Lauryn Deer highlight this rejuvenated Jennies offense. Dames is enjoying a nine-game hitting streak while Deer is hitting .406 and has seven games with three hits.

The Jens will travel to Topeka, Kansas,

Friday to take on Washburn in a doubleheader. The Ichabods lead the MIAA with a 15-1 record and 31-8 record overall.

Game one is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with game two following at 4 p.m.

Basketball guard defends career after back-to-back injuries

Jennies senior guard Kelsey Williams put her college basketball career to rest the way every player dreams, but it wouldn’t have happened without a career defining injury.

Before Williams suffered an ankle injury that sidelined her second season, her playing career was set to expire after the 2016-2017 season, but the injury gave her another year. She made the most of it becoming a national champion and cementing her name as one of the best to play basketball at the University of Central Missouri.

Williams started her career at Moberly Community College before transferring to MIAA foe Lincoln. When she arrived at Lincoln, she suffered a bulging disk in her back that caused her to sit out a season and use a medical redshirt. Williams would play the next season but suffered the ankle injury – forcing her to sit out again.

“I was scrimmaging with our team at Lincoln and I kept having this sensation in my foot where it would hinge, and I would almost fall,” Williams said. “I finally went to the doctor and they did an MRI and found that I had a hole in my talus bone that required surgery.”

The NCAA allows athletes who have graduated to remain eligible for another season so long as they transfer and pursue post-graduate coursework. Williams looked to continue her college playing career and possessed two years of eligibility through her medical redshirt and impending graduate transfer.

Jennies head coach Dave Slifer said UCM hadn’t shown much interest in bringing Williams in prior to her transferring from Lincoln.

“We didn’t recruit her out of high school or Moberly, but she beat us at Lincoln and

we knew then that she was a special player,” Slifer said.

When it came time for Williams to decide where she’d spend the final two seasons of her college career, she was split between Central Missouri and Pittsburg State.

“After I graduated from Lincoln, my coach was a former player and graduate assistant for coach Slifer and she told me this was a great opportunity,” Williams said. “I wanted to come somewhere that I knew the coach, and I trusted her judgment.”

When Williams arrived, she knew that she would need to take on a leadership role being the oldest member on the team.

“When I was talking to coach before I decided to come here, he told me they needed a leader, and I knew they need it too,” Williams said. “I knew I just needed

to come in and play my role, be a leader and help this team out.”

Nearly two years later, the Jennies were headed to Sioux Falls for the central regional of the NCAA Tournament after a disappointing loss in the first round of the conference tournament.

“It was very disappointing to lose in the conference tournament, but I think we needed it and it was an eye opener,” Williams said. “It was a hard loss for a young group of girls, but we came back with fire.”

Williams said she knew the Jennies could make the run to the national championship during their first game of the regional tournament.

“I walked out during halftime and Paige looked at me and said this is just so fun and I said what do you mean,” Williams said. “She said this is just so fun because everyone’s involved, everyone’s scoring and everyone is so together. From that point on I knew we would be one group and could beat those teams.”

After running regional host Augustana out of their own gym, Williams and the Jennies defeated both of their opponents in the Elite Eight by double digits to set up a match against top-ranked Ashland for the national championship.

Williams carried the ball up court nearly every possession forced to navigate Ashland’s suffocating press that forced an average of 20 turnovers a game.

“In reality it was super calm. If I turned it over, then I turned it over,” Williams said. “I was a little irritated when I came to the bench during a timeout after turning it over a couple times and coach told me not to worry about it and to keep moving

She would do just that as the Jennies snapped Ashland’s historic streak to become national champions. Williams’ performance earned her first team All-Tournament honors in her final game as a Jennie.

“I’m still on cloud nine, and it’s kind of unbelievable that I won’t be coming back,” Williams said. “I got a message that the girls were starting workouts soon and I felt a little left out.”

Williams will graduate from UCM with a master’s degree in sports management in May and has accepted an internship to work at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She hopes to eventually get into coaching.

“I’ll be working with their women’s basketball coaching staff, running their camps this summer. Hopefully after that I can find a job as an assistant coach and

Mules rack up 12 runs in win Mules baseball bounced back from a one-run loss to Missouri S&T Tuesday with a 12-8 win over Southwest Baptist University Wednesday.

The Mules got the bats going early, putting up three runs in the first inning

and added six more by the middle of the fourth inning to lead 9-1. The Bearcats would eventually tap into their offense, but it wasn’t enough as right fielder Erik Webb put the game away with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Leftfielder Travis Able got on base five out of six plate appearances – three hits and two walks. Webb and first baseman Collin Nevil also collected three hits for the Mules.

The Mules overall record moves to 27-

10 with the win, with their conference record at 18-7. The Mules will have the weekend off and be back in action Tuesday, April 17 at Lindenwood. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

Throwers enjoy success at MIAA vs NSIC Showdown The Mules and Jennies track and field teams competed in the MIAA vs. NSIC Showdown over the weekend. The majority of athletes sent to the competition from UCM were throwers.

Both teams earned a first-place finish

in the hammer throw, and Amy Dorge led the way for the Jens earning first place on a throw that beat the rest of the field by 26 feet. Mules throwers Nathan Liby, Jace Kaleikau and John Berry dominated, sweeping the top-3 positions of the event.

Nathan Cummings took home first in the shotput with a throw of 56-10.25.

Eric Nehlsen and Logan Mehaffy took second and third in the javelin throw event.

Next up for the Mules and Jennies is

the outdoor edition of the Gorilla Classic hosted by Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas. The event is scheduled for 12 p.m., Saturday, April 14.

MIAA to induct 2014 Mules into Hall of Fame The MIAA’s 2018 Hall of Fame class will include the 2014 National Champion Mules basketball team.

The 2014 team will join former Mules baseball student-athlete Shawn Callahan,

former Mules track and field student-athlete Drew Frizzell and former Jennies volleyball student-athlete Katie Tarka in the 2019 class.

The Mules team will be honored at the

MIAA conference tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri in 2019. The individual honors will be presented Monday, June 4, in the Truman Forum Auditorium at the Kansas

City Public Library, Plaza Branch at 4801 Main Street in Kansas City.

Reservations for the individual ceremony can be obtained by filling out this form and will be given out in order.

17 CAMPUS CRIME A Mazda car was reported to be damaged at 5:45 p.m. March 25 in Lot 45 by an unknown vehicle. The rear passenger side bumper was damaged.

The locking mechanism on the cave door at Pertle Springs was reported to have been damaged at 12:04 p.m. March 24. The door was damaged by unknown person(s). The door was unable to be secured by the officer, and a work order was submitted.

A Facilities, Planning and Operations van was reported damaged at 9:27 a.m.

March 27 in Lot 24 after the driver backed into a dumpster. The van received damage to the passenger rear corner, bumper, tail light and rear window. The dumpster was not damaged.

A silver Ford F-150 was towed at 10:41 a.m. March 27 from Lot 11 due to excessive parking tickets.

Marijuana was reported to be in plain view inside of a car at 6:51 p.m. March 27 in the 600 block of South Washington Street outside of Bradshaw Hall. The owner returned to the vehicle, where a search was conducted and the marijuana destroyed. The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 1:16 a.m. March 29 in South Yeater. The officer could see smoke coming from a fourth-floor bathroom, but was unable to determine the room which the odor was coming from.

Brittany Borke, 20, Jordyn Miller, 19, and Rachel Pickert, 19, were arrested at 11:47 p.m. March 29 in the 400 block of West South Street on suspicion of being minors in possession of alcohol. The females were released on signature bond after being processed.

Kaili Montgomery, 19, was arrested at 2:44 p.m. March 30 on the fourth floor of Bradshaw Hall on suspicion of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. Montgomery was released on signature bond after being processed.

A verbal disturbance was reported at 6:03 p.m. March 30 at the Earl K. Keith Memorial Golf Course. The individual

got into an argument about an alcoholic drink he had purchased and was upset about being removed from the premises by management. Management personnel did not wish to pursue criminal charges.

The individual was left in the care of a sober driver and advised to not return to university property or he would be charged with trespassing.

Jake King, 18, was arrested at 11:08 p.m. March 30 in Lot 1 on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol and open container.

Makayla Black, 19, and Deaja Wesley, 18, were both arrested at 12:35 a.m.

March 31 on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Black and Wesley were both issued a summons to appear in court and were released on signature bond after being processed.

An incident of domestic assault was reported at 11:56 a.m. April 2 at Greenwood Apartments after a female guest assaulted her boyfriend. No criminal charges are being pursued, although the guest is being referred for disciplinary referral and has been banned from the residence.

An odor of marijuana was reported at 11:33 p.m. April 3 in the east stairwell of South Yeater. The officer was unable to locate the source of the odor.

A banned person was reported to have been located at 5:40 p.m. April 4 in South Yeater. The person could not be located when officers arrived.

A window was reported broken at 9:54 p.m. April 4 on the second floor of North Ellis after someone threw an apple at a window, breaking it. The window has been boarded up and the glass cleaned up.

Taelyn Entriken, 22, was arrested at 12:27 a.m. April 6 in the 500 block of McGoodwin Street on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Entriken was released with a summons to appear in municipal court.

April 12 - April 25 | The Muleskinner A crosswalk sign was reported being damaged at 9:44 p.m. April 6 at Clark and Holden streets. The sign was replaced.

An odor of marijuana was reported at 10:27 p.m. April 6 on the ground floor of South Yeater. The officer detected the odor but was unable to locate the source.

Christian Klein, 19, Ethan Chapman, 19, and Tre Johnson, 18, were arrested at 11:10 p.m. April 7 on the east side of the Public Safety building on suspicion of being minors in possession of alcohol. The three were found intoxicated walking on the east side of the Public Safety building and were processed and released on signature bond.

A Pontiac G6 was reported at 6:18 April 8 to have been damaged on the rear driver's side door in Lot 41 by an unknown person between 1:30 and 8:50 a.m.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 7:56 p.m. April 8 on the third floor of East Ellis. The occupants of the room were contacted and the room searched. No contraband was found, and the residents were referred for discipline.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 11:34 p.m. April 8 on the second floor of The Crossing – South at Holden.

The officer detected the odor on arrival and located the source. Officers knocked on the room where the odor was emitting from, but nobody answered. The incident will be referred for discipline.

Allyson Fields, 19, was arrested at 2:07 a.m. April 9 in Lot 41 on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Fields was released on a signature bond after being processed.

A window was reported to have been broken at 8:48 a.m. April 9 in Martin near the Speech and Hearing Clinic. A rock was reported to have been possibly thrown at the window.

A fire extinguisher was reported to have been stolen at 9:01 a.m. April 9 on the second floor of Fitzgerald.

Carl Jones, 21, was arrested at 2:20 p.m. April 9 on suspicion of trespassing

and active warrants for failure to appear in court on a traffic offense. Jones was released after posting bond.

POLICE BEAT A domestic disturbance was reported at 7:47 p.m. March 17 in the 400 block of Chapel Road. Upon arrival, a female subject reported she was in an altercation with her ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend assaulted the female subject and stole a firearm before fleeing on foot prior to the officer’s arrival. The suspect was found and the prosecuting attorney is taking actions.

An incident of stealing was reported at 8:57 a.m. March 21 in the 400 block of Franklin Street after a roommate moved out overnight, taking his roommates property with him. Items reported stolen include three televisions (one returned), military metals, a Nintendo 3DS, two tablets, two Xbox 360 consoles with three controllers and games, movies, tools and more.

Walter Ford, 32, was arrested on active warrants at 8:53 a.m. March 22 in the 300 block of East Young Street at Dollar General after being caught shoplifting at the store. While Ford was arrested on active warrants, the store did not press charges for shoplifting.

A purse was reported stolen at 10:19 a.m. March 22 at the Warrensburg police station. The reporting party claimed her purse was stolen while she was incarcerated and her EBT card used without her consent. A suspect has been identified, but the case is still under investigation.

An unknown party was reported to have used a stolen debit card at 1:31 a.m.

March 23 in the 100 block of West Pine Street. The party has not been located yet.

A fraudulent use of credit or debit card was reported at 8:07 p.m. March 23 in the 1000 block of South Maguire Street.

The reporting party claimed he could not find his wallet and found several transac-

A home was reported to have been burglarized at 1:22 a.m. March 24 in the 100 block of West Oak Street. Gaming consoles and controllers, games, a comforter, a Chiefs blanket and two TVs were reported stolen. The back door was found open, but the reporting party said they believe they locked the door. The incident is still under investigation.

A possible burglary suspect was located at 3:45 a.m. March 24 in the 1100 block of North Simpson Drive after a traffic stop was made. Stolen items were located in his vehicle.

A hit and run accident involving two vehicles was reported at 7:27 p.m. March 24 in the 400 block of Grover Street. The incident is still under investigation. No injuries were reported.

An assault was reported at 12:58 a.m.

March 25 in the 100 block of East Pine Street.

A person reported to have been assaulted at 1:41 a.m. March 25 on West Pine Street in front of The District. The reporting party also claimed that her iPhone was stolen by the other party. The case is still under investigation.

An incident of child abuse was reported at 11:35 a.m. March 25 in the 1000 block of South Maguire Street. A white male subject was reported to have been hitting and kicking a small child in the parking lot of a business. The case was suspended for a lack of evidence.

A window was reported damaged at 3:19 p.m. March 25 in the 700 block of South Holden Street.

Items were reported taken from a car at 7:41 p.m. March 26 at the Warrensburg police station. The reporting party claimed that controlled prescriptions were taken from her car while she was shopping.

Ryan Pittman, 26, was arrested at 9:22 p.m. March 26 at Hillcrest Drive and Johnson Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A vehicle was reported stolen at 5:36 p.m. March 28 on Hawthorne Boulevard. The vehicle was located by Johnson County deputies and returned.

Items were reported stolen from an apartment at 10:40 p.m. March 28 on Ming Street. A car battery charger, two cell phones, a laptop and jewelry were reported stolen. The reporting party claimed that they had left the door unlocked. The incident is still under investigation.

An incident of harassment was reported at 10:44 p.m. March 28 in the Warrensburg police station. A female subject and her children reported that someone had threatened them.

Kayla Penfield, 27, was arrested at 2:17 a.m. March 29 in the 900 block of Deer Run on suspicion of possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and active warrants.

Items were reported stolen from a front patio at 8:40 a.m. March 29 in the 100 block of Emerson Street. The reporting party stated that a weed-eater, two lawn mowers, an air conditioning unit and a gas grill were all taken.

Andrew Coleman-Hooker, 25, was arrested at 7:37 p.m. March 29 in the 300 block of East Cooper Boulevard on suspicion of trespassing.

An incident of forgery was reported at 10:14 a.m. March 30 at the Warrensburg police station. The reporting party claimed that she ordered personal checks but did not receive them. She later heard from a collection agency stating that someone had used the checks which she had thought were lost.

Marijuana usage and a possible sale of marijuana was reported at 1:56 p.m.

19 POLICE BEAT Matthew Gully, 22, was arrested at 1:12 a.m. March 31 in the 400 block of North Maguire Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana after he was spotted driving at night without any headlights on.

p.m. April 3 in the 500 block of Edgewood Drive on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and improper lane use.

Tristan Rardon, 21, was arrested at 4:04 a.m. March 31 in the 600 block of South Washington Street on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

A handgun was reported stolen at 1:25 a.m. April 4 on West Pine Street after a subject was held for alcohol consumption.

According to the subject, someone stole the loaded gun from his holster.

Evan Lanigan, 23, and Lanae Goth, 21, were arrested at 10:03 p.m. March 31 in the 400 block of Jackson Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lanigan was also arrested for active warrants.

Ethan Zeikle, 18, was arrested at 4:03 p.m. April 4 in the 300 block of West Market Street on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol and driving without a valid license. Zeikle was also issued citations for parking violations and operating a vehicle without proper registration.

Melissa Meineke, 37, was arrested at 11:03 p.m. April 1 at College and Culton streets on suspicion of driving with a revoked license.

A female subject reported that her boyfriend assaulted her at 5:05 p.m. April 4 on South Main Street. The boyfriend was gone by the time authorities arrived.

Harassing messages were reported at 1:20 a.m. April 2 in the 1700 block of Sunrise Drive.

An officer was requested at 10:02 a.m.

April 5 in the 700 block of Broad Street to collect a dog that had been adopted earlier that week. The dog attacked a cat, another dog and one of the adopter’s friends, who sustained puncture wounds to the face and forearm.

Chin Sango, 24, was arrested at 6:38 a.m. April 2 in the 900 block of Vest Drive on suspicion of domestic assault.

A homeowner requested officers at 9:12 a.m. April 2 in the 300 block of Jones Avenue to remove people who the homeowner no longer wanted there.

A subject reported a fraud at 11:22 a.m.

April 2 at the Warrensburg police station involving her computer. The reporting party claimed she fell for the scam and lost funds during the interaction.

An incident of harassment was reported at 7:25 p.m. April 2 in the 800 block of South Maguire Street after the reporting party stated that an unknown person was harassing her through the “Hang Out” app.

Cassius Neal, 24, was arrested at 3:36 p.m. April 3 in the 100 block of South Holden Street on suspicion of stealing and the fraudulent use of a credit or debit device.

Melissa Peterson, 30, was charged at 11:20 a.m. April 5 at the Johnson County Detention Center in Centerview on suspicion of stealing by deceit. Peterson had previously turned herself in on a warrant, according to the Warrensburg Police Department. An incident of fraud was originally reported March 30 in the 300 block of East Cooper Boulevard. The store manager advised that Peterson came in with a found receipt on which she had selected items within the store to take to the service counter for a refund.

A Briggs and Stratton generator was reported stolen at 1:07 p.m. April 5 on PCA Road.

An extension ladder was reported stolen at 3:48 p.m. April 5 in the 400 block of West Gay Street.

Anthony Duddridge, 24, was arrested at 10:43 p.m. April 5 at Washington and Young streets on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

April 12 - April 25 | The Muleskinner

A power line was reported to have been knocked over around 1:29 a.m. Friday at Drummond and South Maguire streets.

The pole was blocking Drummond Street.

A witness stated that an unknown vehicle hit the pole. KCP&L was contacted to replace the pole.

An incident of theft was reported at 2:39 p.m. Friday in the 300 block of West South Street. A piece of mail containing prescriptions was reported stolen.

Clark Street on suspicion of resisting arrest and active warrants.

Justin Dubreuil, 29, was arrested at 2:44 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of West Young Street on suspicion of domestic assault.

Joel Parsons, 37, was arrested at 11:40 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of West Clark Street on suspicion of domestic assault.

Ciaran Veal, 22, was arrested at 12:52 a.m. Sunday at Young Street and PCA Road on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Daryl Clinton, 28, was arrested at 1:56 a.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of South Holden Street on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and active warrants.
