NEED TO KNOW Student forum planned to discuss budget issues

Annual 5K to remember UCM alumnus

A student forum scheduled for 7 p.m.

April 3 in Elliott Student Union Room 238 will be hosted by UCM administrators to discuss potential changes to the 2019 budget.

The presentation will provide updated information regarding progress on the budget planning by those actively involved in the process, according to an email by President Chuck Ambrose. He added that the purpose is to address incorrect information about the issue.

The forum was announced after faculty held multiple forums and meetings to discuss the 2019 budget while continuing to meet academic goals and achieve financial sustainability under Gov. Eric Greitens’ proposed budget cuts to higher education.

For those who can’t attend, the forum will be streamed live at ucmo.edu/budgetresponse/.

The sixth annual “Go Big or Go Home” 5K race and walk is scheduled at 9 a.m. April 7 in downtown Warrensburg, starting on West Pine Street, to remember the life of a UCM alumnus, Blaine Whitworth. The registration fee is $30 per individual until April 5 and $35 on race day. The relay team registration fee is $25 per member until April 5 and $35 per member on race day.

The 5K will be proceeded with a pancake breakfast and followed with refreshments. A free kids fun run will take place after the main race, along with a silent auction and raffle from 7-11 a.m.

After the course is clear at approximately 10:15 a.m., an awards ceremony will start. The Warrensburg High School Jazz Band and Center Stage Academy is scheduled to perform at the event, according to a news release.

Whitworth graduated from UCM

in Safety Management in 2009. After leading a successful life while working on an oil rig, Whitworth purchased two bars on Pine Street. He opened Bodie’s in September 2011 and established Molly’s in February 2012. Whitworth’s life was taken Sept. 1, 2012 at his home, according to the Blaine Whitworth Foundation website.

Ambrose takes over Snapchat and answers the important questions UCM’s Snapchat, ucentralmo, was full of answers to crucial questions lingering in students’ minds Monday.

had sent in through their own accounts. The questions varied in topics ranging from vacation destinations to tuition increases and reached over 1000 views between Facebook and Snapchat.

Is it true that there are underground tunnels around campus?

There are colleges such as State University of New York in Albany and Wright State University that have heated underground tunnels that help students get to class when the weather is bad. It seems that UCM doesn’t have any of these tunnels. Well, none that President Ambrose

knows about anyways.

“If we do, no one has told the president, which is kind of a little disheartening to me,” Ambrose said. “If we did, that would be pretty cool. If I find out that we have them and no one has told me, it could be a bad day.”

Who controls when school is canceled because of weather?

Ambrose told the viewers on Snapchat there is a committee that works from Lee’s Summit and the Warrensburg campus to make the decisions before 5 a.m. on mornings that have questionable weather.

“They’re hard decisions, but it’ll start usually in Lee’s summit because weather comes from west to east, and between

the provost, public safety, FPO and Lee's Summit, we come together and make the best decision we can,” he said.

Ambrose also said the committee’s decisions aren’t based on what public schools do because there are different factors to consider and it’s a different dynamic.

I’m graduating this year. What’s your advice?

Commencement is less than 40 days away, and it’s time for students to start thinking about what is next for them.

Ambrose said commencement day is his favorite day on campus because it’s a celebration like no other.

“Always remember UCM as home, and then you can come back for help and assistance to connectivity,” he said. “Take what you’ve been given here and use it for the betterment of others, and you’ll make a difference in other people's lives.”

Ambrose said public safety is the number one priority for campuses because there is a duty to keep a safe environment for all students.

es, working with local law enforcement – campus security becomes a responsibility that we all share,” he said. “If you see something, say something, and we are going to continue to put resources, time and effort into making sure that we are equipped and prepared to keep campus safe.”

I heard that some programs are going to be cut from the university next year. What’s up with that?

The university has been facing budgetary problems in the past year – that’s no secret. Ambrose said this question was very important and that the state’s fiscal challenges are having an impact on the university.

“One of our objectives is to preserve student experience and really protect academic programs and our faculty as much as we possibly can,” he said. “We may have some structural changes to administrative efficiencies, but the most important element is some really big changes coming to impact student success and investment to help you have a better experience while maintaining your cost.”

CAMPUS INNOVATION IS WORKING TO ALLEVIATE FINANCIAL BURDEN

The early returns on the Exclusive Provider Option, the new health-coverage product available to UCM employees, have been encouraging, especially in the current financial climate of the university.

Ranea Taylor, associate vice president of human resources, said in the plan’s first month, from Jan. 1 to Jan. 31, the premiums for the university are 6 percent lower than from the same time last year, or about $60,000. She said that number will fluctuate throughout the year, but the early indications are promising.

On an episode of the podcast “America’s Health Care Advocate – Cary Hall,” Ron Rowe, vice president of sales for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, said because of the financial projections and the confidence in the plan’s success, BCBS has guaranteed that UCM will not have an increase in premiums for three years, something he said his company has never done. Taylor said premium increases for UCM can be about $1 million annually.

On the program, Rowe said UCM President Chuck Ambrose approached BCBS about a primary medical home for employees of the university two years ago, before the university’s budget had been cut by the state.

Ambrose said healthcare costs have been increasing for years, and something needed to change to allow the university to maintain itself and its employees, especially now that it is forced to operate with less money.

“UCM has been under a tuition cap linked to inflation for ten years,” he said.

“And yet we’re being funded by state dollars in an amount lower than what we received in 2001… So, we’re having to budget, simply for our employees, retirement costs and healthcare increases well

beyond what we could charge students in increased tuition and/or will get in support. So just those two costs alone wipe out any dollars to improve things, give raises, move people forward. And that’s just not a good model.”

Ambrose worked on developing a partnership among UCM, BCBS, WMMC and Saint Luke’s Health System to develop a plan available to employees that would not only save the university money but also the faculty and staff who participate, and the four institutions entered into an agreement in November 2017.

Taylor said Ambrose’s idea became the model for the new Exclusive Provider Option. Two goals of the EPO were to streamline the transfer of medical data between providers and to promote healthier lifestyles, both of which would lower premiums for both the university and its employees.

She said partnering with Saint Luke’s and WMMC made sense because of the already high rate – 96 percent – of insurance claims coming from those two organizations.

“We have about 1,200 employees,” she said. “If you take 96 percent of the claims amongst those benefit-eligible employees and/or dependents, and they came from two major groupings, it makes sense to partner with those two major groupings, so that’s what we did.”

In the first week of February WMMC closed one of its clinics and eliminated 41 positions, many of which were filled, in a cost-cutting measure.

Taylor said the hospital cuts won’t impact the relationship between UCM and WMMC or the EPO offered to university employees.

“Any time you have the closure of an

organization that is a hospital or a care facility, there’s going to be an impact to the patients of that facility, no doubt,” she said. “Does that impact how our plan operates? No, because our plan still has the structure. The providers that are still there, the operations that are still going on would still bill Blue Cross, [and Blue Cross] would still get the billable dollars.

All of the pieces that UCM, from a business perspective, is connected with will continue to move forward.”

Ambrose said the financial burdens experienced by WMMC are part of the business and said he has confidence in the leadership of the hospital.

“The pressures on rural and smaller hospitals are just really intense,” he said.

“It’s not easy on smaller hospitals. The federal mandates and the lack of Medicaid reimbursements in the state of Missouri, and a lot of other things, make it a really hard business. That reality will probably never go away… We have a really good working partnership with the senior team [of WMMC]. [WMMC CEO] Derinda Reberry is a very forward-looking administrator and has done a lot of good things, not just for this partnership but for the community.”

Taylor said she understands the level of concern that some participants might have. She said the personal nature of health care, from a patient’s point of view, could make the removal of a particular provider through company downsizing alarming. However, she said there are many reasons WMMC may have chosen to close a clinic that would not necessarily be cause for alarm from a business standpoint.

She said participants in the EPO no longer have copays when visiting their

primary care physician and have reduced copays for specialists and reduced costs at pharmacies.

Preventative care is a key part of the plan, Taylor said. The plan includes regular monitoring of certain metrics related to each individual’s health and can be tracked by health care providers. The metrics by which success will be measured are still being defined, but the idea is that if certain metrics are hit and are sustained, the costs of the benefits will go down, both for individuals and for the university.

She said of the five top categories under which most of the UCM employee claims fell, three related to lifestyle choices that increase risks of health issues: cardiovascular, muscular-skeletal and diabetes.

“We can do things with diet and exercise that can significantly impact how many claims we get and how successful people are on the tail end of those types of treatments,” she said.

She said the EPO is about promoting a healthier lifestyle for UCM employees.

“What we have to do as an institution is continue to promote and push the tenets of the program,” she said. “It’s about wellness. It’s about building those relationships with providers. It’s about getting the care, making sure you’re going in and you’re not waiting until you have something like bronchitis… The more you’re getting that care, the more likely you are to not have some of those… really high dollar claims or extended hospital stays. At the same time, you’re developing that relationship with that caregiver, so they’re able to be preventative and proactive, which is really where the cost savings comes from on both sides.”

MEET YOUR SGA PRESIDENT CANDIDATES

Candidates are now running for president and vice president of the Student Government Association after Luke Hawley and Orie Hemme have ran unopposed over the past two years.

There are three candidates running for president: DaVonte Hair, Courtney Abt and Nicholas Hutsell.

The two candidates for vice president are: Timothy Peterson, running with Hair, and Cole Fine, running with Abt. All of the candidates presented their platforms in a debate hosted by SGA on Tuesday evening in the Elliott Student Union.

Abt is a graduate student getting her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. She joined SGA her freshman year and has been on the University Issues committee since. Two

years ago, she was nominated as the chair of the committee and is still standing as that role today.

Hair is a sophomore public relations major with a minor in military science. Hair said he was involved with SGA his freshman year of college. He is an ROTC cadet and wants to go active duty after college, then get into politics and try to become president of the United States.

Hutsell is a junior history major minoring in English and political science. He was a sophomore senator in SGA and was involved in the SGA committees.

Voting days are April 3 and 4 at tables in the Elliott Student Union and James K. Kirkpatrick Library 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Or vote on the UCM website 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE FESTIVAL BRINGS AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS TO THE YOUTH COMMUNITY

More than 30 authors and illustrators and some 4,300 children and teachers converged on campus over spring break during the 50th Children's Literature Festival.

“The program started pretty small back in 1969,” said Maya Kucij, special collections librarian in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library and director of this year’s Children’s Literature Festival.

History of this event begins with Philip Sadler, professor of children’s literature, and Ophelia Gilbert, laboratory school librarian, who invited five authors to come to the Central Missouri State University campus back in ‘69.

All of the authors were from Missouri, one author ¬– Cena Christopher Draper – lived right here in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Children from the laboratory school were able to listen to authors speak about their experiences and have their books autographed.

The family-oriented event has evolved over the years from a local festival to children attending from all over Missouri and

Kanas to see what new books where being sold and read by the authors each year.

“We consider this to be, as far as I know, the longest running literature festival geared towards children in the country,” Kucij said.

There is no other literature festival for children that has been operating as long as the Children’s Literature Festival in Warrensburg.

The festival kicked off Sunday with a visitor’s luncheon with guest speaker and award-winning author, Jack Gantos, whose works have received a Newbery Award, Scott O’Dell Award, Newbery Honor, Printz Honor, Sibert Honor, and National Book Award Finalist nomination.

Sunday’s luncheon was followed with a book signing by authors and illustrators.

The lunch was provided for members who registered while ticket sales went to support the festival.

“We are completely self-supported through our book sales and registration costs and that’s the way it’s been operating for 50 years,” Kucij said.

The campus-wide event included stations set up from the art gallery, to the Elliot Student union, to the James C. Kirk-

patrick Library.

The art gallery “50 Years of Illustrators” exhibit showcased talents of former illustrators and how children’s book illustrations have evolved over the years.

Monday and Tuesday children began to arrive with teachers to meet authors and buy books at the fair located in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom. At various campus locations authors were available to sign books after their presentations about their books.

Hundreds of books were available for

children and parents to purchase. Children could be seen lining up down the hall to grab a treat at the snack booth provided with candy, popcorn, and drinks before they rushed to grab the last copies of their favorite books.

“It’s really a magical thing when you see the kids meet an author or illustrator that they really admire... I think they find it really fascinating.” Kucij said.

Lacee Stanley wants to make an impact in somebody’s life. After taking American Sign Language classes at UCM, she realized teaching deaf children was how she was going to do it.

“I just want to help deaf kids really bad,” Stanley said. “I thought if I could help kids express themselves that it would be important because If you can imagine having a speech disorder and not being able to tell someone that you’re hungry or that you’re in pain or that you’re upset – to not be able to express yourself and to tell somebody what you need – I think that is what my ultimate goal for people would be.”

Stanley is a senior studying speech pathology. She said it wasn’t until she took ASL classes that she realized where her heart really was and why she wanted to teach.

“I just want to advocate for anybody with a disability,” Stanley said. “I really have this soft spot for deafness in my heart, I just think the language is really expressive and beautiful.”

Stanley is an advocate for deaf culture awareness and participated in Spotlight’s Deaf Culture event in February, where she taught participants a few words or phrases in sign language.

“I just think it’s important to advocate for things that you really, really care about,” Stanley said. “I think not enough people know the impact that deafness can have on somebody’s learning. I don’t really think people understand that if you‘re born without hearing, you’re already behind.

aren’t provided proper services in school.

“I met a lady today. Her son is nine.

They’re discontinuing services for him because he’s nine which is like aging out of his services,” Stanley said. “That means his services shouldn’t stop until his hearing loss stops but they stop it at a certain age or they stop services if you have a certain IQ and they don’t really recognize that kids need help in certain deficits, especially language, (language) is the foundation for every other subject.”

Stanley believes there should be teachers for every type of child.

“We need to individualize more things and we just need to pay attention to the problem and not focus on money when it comes to schools,” she said.

Stanley said by the age of 1, a child should know 50 words. She said if a child is deaf, they won’t know any words because they can’t even hear their own voice sometimes.

“So that’s why most (deaf) kids graduate at like a fourth grade reading level because they don’t get English taught to them. At a deaf school, they usually push signing – that is their main form of communication,” Stanley said. “When a deaf person reads, there’s words that they don’t know because they’ve never heard them.

They don’t know the rules of English, and they’re rarely taught the rules of English sometimes, it just depends on the teacher and they’ve been behind since birth so catching up takes a really, really long time.”

Stanley gets to work with a different client each semester during clinicals for her degree program.

“Right now I have a client with dyslexia,” Stanley said. “So with my clients’ needs, I make an individual plan of how we’re going to treat it and activities we’re going to do every week, and then I set up a goal.”

She said she teaches clients with dyslexia sight words – words that can’t be explained using phonetics, like the word ‘blue’ or ‘where.’

“So we teach them how to segment the word, how to memorize it, how to visualize it and get it in their brain,” Stanley said.

She said she’s been working with her current client to learn about 20 sight words.

“By the end of the semester, I hope when we retest him that when he goes through the same spelling list he gets 80 percent of them right verses missing over half of them the first time,” Stanley said.

She said she thinks teaching people about early identification of disabilities is important.

“My child is finally getting services in eighth grade,” she said about her client.

“So he didn’t have those eight years to get helped…he might have not even needed therapy at this point.”

Molly White, Stanley’s friend and roommate, said Stanley found her niche in ASL.

“She came in as speech pathology, and so I think she had a lot of interest in it, but once she took an ASL class she was like, ‘That’s what I love doing,’” White said.

She thinks Stanley’s going to be a great teacher for deaf students because of her passion.

“One of the things that she always tells me is that she just really loves talking with people that may feel underrepresented, so including deaf culture people with disabilities, learning disabilities – whatever it is,” White said. “It’s really cool, she just loves getting to know people. I adore it.”

After graduation in May, Stanley plans to apply for a graduate degree in deaf education.

“There are not many in-person deaf education classes, which is why sometimes schools don’t even have a teacher for the deaf or teacher for the blind kids who are disabled because there’s not really a lot of programs available,” Stanley said.

“I think the education system as a whole needs to do a better job of helping kids with learning disabilities, helping kids with regular handicaps or helping children get the best education that they can.”

Political stagnation, learning from rats

After the last political cycle, it is very apparent to anyone that isn’t hiding under a rock that the political atmosphere has stagnated due to polarization. A 2015 study from the University of San Diego found 46 percent of Americans identify themselves as “strongly Republican” or “strongly Democrat.” In 1989, only about 30 percent of Americans identify strongly to their political beliefs. Meaning, over the years, politics in America has moved further away from the middle aisle.

With an increase in polarization, it seems that civil discussion has vanished and left only uncivil discourse in its wake. What can be done to fix or revive civil public discussion? How can an average person have a political debate that produces meaningful change? Those questions will be answered, but first one must know why civil discussion died off in the first place.

The death of civil discussion is straightforward to understand. Its death can be

attributed to social media expansion and by people being aggressive when arguing their ideas. Social media and its increase in use over the years has let Americans argue their beliefs anytime, anywhere.

However, that doesn’t mean the arguments are helpful. This is because online comments “are extraordinarily aggressive, without resolving anything” said Art Markman, professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. Social media tends to make the debate turn south rather quickly. When that happens, most people are rightfully turned off from the topic at hand. A research team at Harvard University found this to be true.

The study examined the bias of people and what happens when their ideas are attacked. The research team found that when a person’s opinion is aggressively challenged that person’s opinion becomes more radical. The study concluded that how someone is arguing is more crucial than the argument itself.

So, how does one change someone’s mind but not alienate the opponent’s idea and shutting down the debate? Clinical

psychologist Jordan Peterson believes he has found the answer.

In his recent book “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos,” Peterson points out that people’s desire to win an argument and not change someone’s mind is the problem. He explains this desire to win creates a social atmosphere in which people are not willing to debate and change their stance. People don’t want to risk being wrong; they don’t want to lose.

He came to this conclusion by comparing this issue to a behavioral study on rats.

The study he is referencing examined the dynamics of rats play fighting when one rat is bigger and the other smaller.

The small rat starts playing with the big rat. Because one rat is bigger, it is easier for it to win. However, while the big rat can win every time it plays with the smaller one, it doesn’t. Why is that?

Peterson explains that if the big rat didn’t let the small rat win at least 30 percent of the time, the small rat would no longer play with the bigger rat. Peterson concludes the processes of rats can be applied similarly to humans. He believes

that since people refuse to let their opponent be right or “win” some of the time, intellectual “play” has stopped.

Keeping both studies in mind, a solution to political stagnation can be found.

A person who wants a quality discussion must let their opponent win from time to time. Meaning when debating an idea, a person must not be overly aggressive and concede to their opponents’ points when they make sense. Doing both of those things will create an atmosphere that is challenging for both people and offers quality political civil discussion.

For political stagnation to disappear, people need to change their ways of discussing discussion. Understanding that aggressive behavior does nothing for a conversation is an essential virtue in debate. Also, learning from rats is vital if society has a desire to ensure there is an ongoing discussion. While all ideas are not of equal value, all ideas must be dealt with carefully and respectfully if a civil discussion is to return to the states.

Because remember, we are all American after all.

If the Governor’s budget proposal were to be implemented, which calls for $5.4 million in less support for our campus, it would place this university in a position where they must continue cutting essential faculty, staff and crucial programs that benefit our state. With this budget proposal, Governor Greitens is sacrificing the future and quality of higher education at the University of Central Missouri, to the detriment of all Missourians.

Budget reductions of this magnitude would undoubtedly cause the rising cost of college to be placed squarely on the backs of students in the form of increased tuition and fees. Even though this Univer-

sity is one of the most affordable opportunities in higher education in the state of Missouri, this price tag is increasingly becoming one which we as students cannot financially justify. Not only is this an unfavorable outcome for the thousands of college students in this community, but it will leave a scar in the fabric of Missouri for years to come.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, President Charles Ambrose will host an open forum to “assist in the information sharing process” and give students an update on “ progress being made with regard to budget planning by those actively involved in this process.”

It is imperative that every student at UCM attend this open forum and reject the premise that students should not be actively involved in budget process. As the state continues to cut our budget, we must consider students the primary shareholders of the University of Central Missouri. If we find that our inputs into this higher education system return only broken guarantees and great burdens of student debt with no such democratic representation in the halls of our institution; it is our duty to reject the premise of those halls and demand and forge a system that works for all. To demand and forge a system that refuses to sacrifice the well-be-

ing and economic opportunity of one student for the advancement of another. To demand and forge civic and community leadership from all who enter this higher education institution to share a sense of duty not only to our communities but for all those who believe in a forum for academic expression, and the pursuit of liberty for all. We owe it to all students, teachers, and community members at UCM to demand a better future, and craft an equitable system that is accessible to all regardless of color, class, or creed, and return the possibility of upward mobility and dignity back to the citizens of Missouri.

Jennies basketball captured the NCAA National Championship for the first time since 1984 over top-ranked Ashland Eagles Friday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In a shocking 66-52 victory, the Jens stymied Ashland’s high powered offense that averaged nearly 100 points a game. The Eagles came into the game having won 73 straight contests dating back to 2016 and were favorites to win their second straight championship. Ashland scores most of their points in transition and fuels their offense by forcing an average of 27 turnovers per game with their overwhelming full-court press.

The strengths of the Eagles were on full display in the opening minutes as they smothered the Jens to take a 16-6 lead on perfect 7-7 shooting. It appeared everything that could go wrong was going wrong and it would take a strong effort to turn the tables.

The third quarter was tightly contested, and Ashland pulled within two points with two minutes left on a pair of free throws.

Redmond would nail another three to give the Jens a 49-44 lead going into the fourth.

The fourth was all about defense for the Jennies, Ashland was unable to score for over three minutes after the quarter began. The Eagles refused to go away pulling to within three points on multiple occasions.

Nearing the two-minute mark, the Eagles made it a one-possession game. Skaggs responded by rolling off seven straight points to put the Ashland away. The Jennies snapped a streak of historic proportions and held a team that averaged 100 points a game to nearly half of that.

Senior guard Kelsey Williams was instrumental in breaking Ashland’s full-court pressure acting as the primary ball handler.

“Our goal was to control the pace of play and Kelsey did a wonderful job of making sure there was low possessions,” Slifer said. “Defensively, I thought we were just outstanding.”

Williams played all 40 minutes and scored 11 points with five assists. Her performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team in her final game with the Jennies.

“It’s something incredible. I feel like I left it all out there,” Williams said. “These last two years with these girls have been nothing but everything that I have ever dreamed of. Life couldn’t be better right now.”

Redmond finished with 22 points and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

Redmond said the Jennies overcame adversity to claim the second national title and first 30-win season. The early exit in the conference tournament crushed their hopes of bringing the NCAA Tournament to Warrensburg. Instead of hanging their heads on the loss, they came back better than ever knowing they could run the table.

“After our first game of regionals is when I knew we were all in. We lost the first round of the conference tournament. I think we needed to,” Redmond said. “So that’s the best thing that happened to us all season.”

'THE ROOM:'

If you haven’t heard of “The Room,” it’s pretty much considered to be one of the worst movies in film history, and that’s saying a lot. It’s filled with bad everything: acting, writing, camerawork, directing, you name it, it’s terrible.

Despite being hailed as being unbelievably awful, “The Room” has become very popular. After its premier in 2003, it created a cult-following and led to late night movie screenings, causing the most interesting fan base since “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Fans can quote this entire film, “Anyway, how’s your sex life?” for example.

Why are people such big fans of possibly the worst movie ever created? You see, “The Room” is so badly executed, it’s actually really funny and enjoyable to watch. It’s one of the greatest unintentional comedies, joining the ranks of so bad it’s good movies such as “Troll 2” and “Plan 9 from Outer Space.”

“The Room” is so iconic, a book was released about the making of it called, “The Disaster Artist,” written by Tom Bissell and actual cast-member Greg Sestero – he plays “Oh, hi, Mark.” Last year, the book was adapted into a film directed

by James Franco.

Ironically, the film about “The Room” has received a lot of critical acclaim. Having seen the film, I can confirm that it’s a really good movie. This makes “The Disaster Artist” one of the best movies about making bad ones, along with “Ed Wood”

by Tim Burton.

Before going further, I would like to mention that “The Room” was written, produced, starred and directed by a single person: Tommy Wiseau. Some filmmakers can blame their bad movies on other people. Wiseau can’t.

Now how can I truly describe this movie... it’s difficult. Honestly, the best way is to see “The Room” for yourself. It’s almost impossible to explain. How can a film really be that bad? Why are they playing football while wearing tuxedos?

Why is Wiseau always laughing? And why are there pictures of spoons in the background? All these questions and so many more will not be answered. And that’s what makes this movie so bizarre and so great.

The plot focuses on a simple love triangle between Johnny, played by Wiseau of course, his “future wife” Lisa and his “best friend” Mark. The reason I am putting quotes around their roles is because the movie reminds viewers who they are every five minutes, as if you forgot.

There are many scenes in “The Room” that can only be described as pointless.

They have nothing to do with the rest of the story. Lisa’s mother causally mentions she has breast cancer and it’s never brought up again. Everyone decides to play football every now and then – there’s a lot of football in this movie. Johnny’s friend, Denny, gets into a drug-deal-gonewrong situation and like Lisa’s mother’s health condition, it’s never addressed again.

By the way, Denny is my favorite character. He acts so creepy around Johnny and Lisa, especially when they’re about to have sex. Denny is either a complete pervert or a potential serial killer, or both.

Fair warning, if you don’t like unnecessary sex scenes, then you will not enjoy “The Room.” Not only are there a few, but they are done so poorly, it’s uncomfortable to watch, but it’s also kind of funny.

My only critique for the worst movie ever is that it’s a little dull at times, but if you’re willing to put up with it you’ll be rewarded by some A-quality comedy.

thought of it as a masterpiece. He wanted to create a “great drama,” like a Tennessee Williams’ play or a James Dean movie. After seeing the final product, most directors would’ve changed their names in the closing credits to Alan Smithee, but not him. After its release, with viewers finding it very funny, he has since claimed it was suppose to be a comedy instead.

Wiseau is known to be very touchy about his movie, he’s accepted all the money that it’s made, but he’s gone after people he feels have “criticized” him. Wiseau filed an injunction last year against a Canadian documentary about his film “Room Full of Spoons.”

“Ontario Superior Court Judge Markus Koehnen dismissed all claims,” according to the Toronto Star.

A few years ago, he went after YouTuber Doug Walker, known for reviewing bad movies as the character Nostalgia Critic, for making a review of “The Room.”

This prompted Walker to parody Tommy Wiseau in a video “NC: Tommy Wiseau Show,” followed by more videos and even an interview. Well, I hope Wiseau doesn’t have a problem with this article.

To be clear, this movie was intended to be taken ser i o u s l y.

That might be the funniest thing about “The Room.” It acts so dramatic. The film feels like it was supposed to be very intense, making it even more hilarious.

In one scene, Johnny is so “tormented” by his girlfriend, causing him to yell, “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!!” It was supposed to be an emotional moment, paying homage from the famous quote “you’re tearing me apart,” from the movie “Rebel Without a Cause.” But in that movie, James Dean delivers the line with a powerful performance. In “The Room,” the line is so badly delivered, it makes me burst into laughter.

'The Disaster Artist:' I feel that everyone going into to filmmaking should watch “The Room” for training purposes, it’s a textbook example of everything you shouldn’t do when making a film.

If you want to see a movie that is so bad it’ll make you laugh, please give this film a watch. If you’re a fan of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” then you will especially like “The Room.” Honestly, it deserves its title as the “Citizen Kane of bad movies,” and I had a fun time watching it.

I usually get annoyed when I see bad films, but for “The Room,” I’ll gladly make an exception.

A Great Remake of a Terrible Movie

In 1994, Tim Burton directed a movie called “Ed Wood” about a director behind some of the worst movies of all time. The film received widespread critical acclaim.

In 2017, another good movie about the making of a terrible one was released, “The Disaster Artist.”

The film was adapted from the nonfiction book of the same name, which provided a look of “The Room” from behind the scenes. The film follows the making of cult-internet favorite “The Room,” a movie so bad, it’s great.

It’s directed by James Franco, who stars also as Tommy Wiseau, the director of “The Room.”

“The Disaster Artist” mainly focuses on Greg Sestero, played by Dave Franco, who is James’ younger brother. Greg Sestero actually co-wrote the book; both it and the film are from his perspective. As a struggling actor, Sestero comes across Wiseau, who has the same dream.

Together they take off for Hollywood to try to become famous, but after be unable to find success. Wiseau has the idea of the two of them making their own movie. From then on, Sestero follows Wiseau along as he makes “The Room,” showing the madness that occurred behind the scenes.

It’s worth noting that being siblings doesn’t affect the Franco brothers’ acting.

Their relationship as friends on screen is completely believable.

Now before I go any further, I need to be honest, I haven’t read the book, so I have no idea how closely the movie followed it. All I really know is what I looked up online.

“No adaptation of a book is ever totally complete, of course, and while Franco and the screenwriters left some big things

out, their movie is certainly faithful to the spirit of ‘The Disaster Artist’,” according to Screenrant.com.

It’s ironic that James Franco, who is the director and plays one of the main characters of “The Disaster Artist,” portrays Tommy Wiseau, who was the director and played one of the main characters of “The Room.” Granted, it might be fitting instead, because unlike Wiseau, James Franco made it work.

He is almost unrecognizable as Tommy Wiseau. While he may not physically look like him, he completely talks and acts like him. The film also portrays Wiseau as ambiguous. He’s shown to be selfish, manipulative and even cruel, but also as sympathetic and naive. I’ll go into more detail about Wiseau’s portrayal later on.

In addition, the film brings up real questions about Tommy Wiseau that to this day haven’t been answered.

Where’s he from? he claims he’s from New Orleans, but he has a European accent? How old is he? He won’t give a straight answer. Where did he get his massive fortune? He paid for the film himself, and it cost millions to make.

The beginning is a little slow, but once Wiseau and Sestero start working on “The Room,” it gets interesting. Some of the deviations from the book to film are a little puzzling though.

Again from screenrant.com, “The movie somewhat soft-pedals just how tyrannical, bordering on abusive, Tommy Wiseau was, both on set and in his everyday dealings with Sestero.”

“The Disaster Artist” doesn’t completely make a parody of “The Room.” Much like “Ed Wood,” it instead shows a heartfelt story about artists trying to pursue their Hollywood dreams. While there’s

plenty of comedy, most of the film could be described as a drama.

Because it’s a movie about Hollywood, you can be sure there are plenty of celebrity cameos. Some playing minor roles included Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Josh Hutcherson. Others play a character that may appear only once, like Bob Odenkirk, and some celebrities, of course, played themselves such as Judd Apatow and Bryan Cranston. These cameos make the movie a fun game of “Hey, I know that person.”

The crew did a great job of recreating “The Room” almost shot-for-shot. During the end credits, a montage is shown that compares the original footage of the film to the recreated material – they came really close. Some of the acting is also spoton to “The Room.” The actors did a great job of giving believably bad performances.

Do you need to watch “The Room” before watching “The Disaster Artist?” Not really. In fact, you might be more baffled by the making of this unbelievably bad movie if you know nothing about it.

Watching “The Room” first and then “The Disaster Artist” was a very enjoyable experience for me, but I wonder what it would be like to watch “The Disaster Artist” then “The Room” instead.

Oddly enough, if I was given the option between re-watching one of the two, I’d actually choose “The Room.” Despite it probably being the worst movie ever made and “The Disaster Artist” being a thousand times better, “The Room” is such a fun film to watch. “The Disaster Artist,” is still a really good film. Its very well-acted, well-directed and tells a satisfying story about history that is so strange, you couldn’t make it up.

Mules baseball faces Nebraska-Kearney in upcoming three-game series

Central Missouri Mules baseball looks to bounce back in their next home game after struggling in a 6-1 loss against Southwest Baptist Bearcats on Tuesday night.

This is the second straight loss for the Mules which puts them at 21-7 on the season and 12-5 in MIAA conference play.

UCM has lost back-to-back games for just the second time this season and the first time since the season opening weekend.

The Mules look to regroup as they remain at home for a three-game series against Nebraska-Kearney Lopers this week Thursday through Saturday.

Against Nebraska-Kearney, UCM is just 11-5 in 16 games played all-time between the schools. While under Head Coach Kyle Crookes, the Mules are 6-2 against the Lopers.

The Mules look to continue their great play at home as they are 11-2 at home this season and are winners of five of their last seven home contests.

UCM baseball also remains in the national rankings at the number 11 spot in the latest poll after going 2-2 last week.

Central Missouri has been ranked in the last four national ranking polls after starting the season unranked.

The Lopers are 17-11 overall on the season with a 5-6 record away from home. The Lopers are now on a current two-game win streak after defeating Lindenwood in their final match of a threegame series, 10-3, and Fort Hays State in which they managed to pull off a shutout game, 7-0.

Last time Central Missouri and Nebraska-Kearney met, the Mules won the three-game series in Kearney, Nebraska 2-1. It was evenly split through the first two games as the Mules managed to pull off the win in game one, 12-2, but the Lopers regrouped and took a win in a close match in game two, 11-10. UCM was able to outlast Nebraska-Kearney in their last match to take the series with a commanding shutout game, 11-0.

Jennies bowling takes second at MIAA Championship The Jens were in Wheaton, Illinois, last week for the MIAA Championships looking for a second straight conference crown.

Despite going 2-1 on the second day of the tournament, the Jennies were unable to overcome eventual champions McKendree Bearcats in the championship match.

The Jennies opened the second day of play with 4-0 sweep of the Maryville Saints to advance to the championship.

To win the championship, the Jens needed to defeat McKendree twice in a row because of their loss to the Bearcats on the first day of the tournament. The Jens persevered and took the first series 4-2 to

force the best-of-seven Baker series for the championship.

The Jennies grabbed the first match of the winner take all series, but the Bearcats turned around and won the next three matches. With the title on the line, the Jens took the fifth match of the series to bring the series to 3-2. The Bearcats

once again answered with a series clinching victory in the sixth match to take the MIAA Championship.

The Jennies now await the reveal of the teams competing in the NCAA Bowling Championship in St. Louis, April 12-14.

Reaves and Lowrance named Academic All-Americans Mules golf opened their 2018 season at the Division II National Preview in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, at the Fighting Joes Golf Club. The Mules finished tied for eighth out of 18 teams and four golfers placed in the top-50 individually.

The Mules began the season ranked 22nd in the Division II Coaches Poll after finishing in the top-5 of all but one tournament during their fall season.

Freshman Sam Parrott led the way for the Mules shooting +9 and 225 overall to

finish tied for 21st. Junior Cole Dillon finished two strokes behind Parrott tied for 28th place. Junior John Bonaobra and senior Shayne Allan each tied for 42nd and shot +14, 230.

The Mules will be back in action April 2 and 3 at the Dallas Baptist Classic in Los Colinas, Texas, at the Hackberry Country Club.

Bowling stops at Vanderbilt before post-season Jennies bowling will head to Smyrna, Tennessee, for the Vanderbilt Music City Classic March 16-18. The competition will be the final of the regular season for

the Jens before the MIAA Championships in Wheaton, Illinois, and the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

with impressive finishes over their last couple of matches. A second-place finish at the UCM/Lincoln Women’s Invitational and fourth place at the Nebraska Big

Red Invitational has the Jennies in a good position heading toward the postseason.

Jens scored eight runs on seven hits and shut out the Bearcats 8-0 in the second game. The Jennies' overall record is 7-13 and 1-1 in MIAA play.

The Jennies will head to St. Joseph for the Missouri Western Regional Crossover held March 16-18 where they will play six games over three days. Their first matchup

will be with the Augustana Vikings, the game is scheduled to be played Friday at noon.

March 29 - April 11 | The Muleskinner An incident of potential rape was reported March 4 on East Culton Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a female subject and transported her to WMMC for treatment and investigation. No additional details are currently available.

Fraud was reported at 2:29 p.m. March 8 on East Cooper Boulevard after an individual sent money to a female subject in Mississippi who was selling a car, to learn that it was a scam afterward.

Derrick Roar, 37, was arrested at 4:41 p.m. March 14 in the 800 block of PCA Road on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, assaulting a police officer, property damage and resisting arrest.

Garry Walker, 30, was arrested at 10:45 a.m. March 9 in the 100 block of South Holden Street on suspicion of stealing and forgery.

Officers responded to a theft call at 8:35 p.m. March 14 in the 300 block of East Culton Street after a license plate was stolen from a vehicle.

Property damage was reported at 9:13 a.m. March 12 in the 100 block of North Maguire Street.

An individual was reported abused at 1:06 p.m. March 15 in the 1100 block of Montserrat Park Boulevard.

A past incident of rape was reported at 2:24 p.m. March 12 in the 400 block of Franklin Street.

Richard Syler, 74, was arrested at 2 p.m. March 15 in the 100 block of South Holden Street on suspicion of child molestation.

Lost counterfeit money was turned into Warrensburg Police at 4:12 p.m. March 12.

A white 1997 GMC Sonoma was reported stolen March 12 in the 200 block of Ming Street. The case is still under investigation.

An individual found a counterfeit $100 bill on March 12 in the 400 block of North Maguire Street.

James Kirchner, 37, was arrested at 2:38 p.m. March 13 at Young and Holden streets on suspicion of driving with a revoked license.

Manpreet Singh, 46, was arrested at 3:30 p.m. March 13 in the 100 block of South Holden Street on suspicion of promoting the sale of drug paraphernalia or an imitation controlled substance.

William Wells, 34, was arrested at 9:52 p.m. March 13 in the 400 block of Jefferson Street on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

Property damage was reported at 2:47 p.m. March 15 in the 200 block of East Oak Street after windows were reported damaged.

A domestic dispute was reported at 6:15 p.m. March 15 in the 1700 block of Sunset Drive. The spouses were separated for the evening.

An individual reported being harassed by a former coworker at 7:37 p.m. March 15 on Broad Street.

Two signs were reported stolen at 11:48 a.m. March 15 in the 100 block of Vamo Road.

A cash box was reported broken into after 7 a.m. March 15 in the 300 block of Franklin Street. The box and money had been taken.

An Apple watch was reported stolen from a vehicle at 7:57 a.m. March 16 on East North Street.

An air compressor was reported stolen from a trailer at 9:38 a.m. March 16 on East Young Street.

POLICE BEAT 17 Multiple items were reported taken from a vehicle after 8 p.m. March 16 on Burlington Road. Items taken include headphones, a paint ball gun, a paint ball gun oxygen tank, a lanyard, baseballs and a baseball hat.

Jordon Grundy, 22, was arrested at 1:01 a.m. March 17 at South Holden and Union streets on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

Multiple cars were reported damaged March 17 in the vicinity of Anderson Street and Broad Street. Each car had received damage to their side mirrors, windows, windshields and taillights during the early morning hours. The incident is still under investigation.

A car was reported damaged at 10:27 a.m. March 17 in the 200 block of West Market Street.

Levi Strong, 19, Anthony Carver, 19, and Brandon Marr, 18, were arrested at 10:25 p.m. March 17 in the 300 block of West Young Street on suspicion of being minors in possession of alcohol. Kayla Conrad, 22, and Marr were also arrested on suspicion of supplying liquor to minors.

An individual reported that someone had stolen his backpack containing a Knob Noster school laptop from his car at 6:59 a.m. March 17 on Manor Drive.

It was reported that business cards were removed from an unlocked truck at 10:55 a.m. March 17 in the 700 block of Iron Horse Drive. Nothing else was reported missing from the truck, and the cards were recovered nearby.

Tristan Ervin, 22, was arrested at 6:05 p.m. March 18 in the 400 block of Chapel Road on suspicion of domestic assault.

A mailbox was reported damaged at 11:22 a.m. March 19 on West Gay Street.

Sean Dotson, 21, was arrested at 11:57 a.m. March 19 in the 600 block of West Clark Street on suspicion of being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Barton Gibson, 49, was arrested at 1:45 p.m. March 19 in the 500 block of West Clark Street on suspicion of trespassing.

Four wheels and tires were reported stolen from a pickup truck at 9:24 a.m.

March 19 in the 300 block of East Young Street.

A prior theft was reported at 9:02 a.m.

March 21 in the 1200 block of Basswood Street. A utility trailer, Caterpillar pallet fork, and Caterpillar Gratple rake were reported taken.

A fabric KC Royal wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle March 21 in the 600 block of Lakeview Drive. The reporting party stated the wallet was taken between 11 p.m. March 20 and 7:30 a.m. March 21.

Dillon Clark, 23, Brandon Clark, 21, and Kiontae Williams, 20, were arrested at 3:35 p.m. March 21 in the 200 block of East Culton Street on suspicion of possessing synthetic cannabinoid and possessing drug paraphernalia. Dillon Clark was also arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana and delivering controlled substances. Brandon Clark was also arrested on suspicion of manufacturing controlled substances.

Carol Mitchell, 32, was arrested at 11:29 p.m. March 22 at U.S. Highway 50 and Devashier Road on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

Medication was reported stolen at 7:13 p.m. March 22 in the 500 block of Southwest Drive. The reporting party stated that a male subject took the medication three days prior to reporting. The incident is still under investigation.

Carol Barton, 59, was arrested at 9:15 a.m. March 23 on East Cooper Boulevard on suspicion of stealing.

18 CAMPUS CRIME Alicia Isaacks, 20, was arrested at 1:12 a.m. March 9 in the 100 block of South Washington Street on suspicion of possession of alcohol by consumption and false identification. Isaacks was later released on signature bond after processing.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 2:43 p.m. March 9 on the second floor of The Crossing - South at Holden.

The scent of marijuana was detected upon arrival, and officers contacted the occupant of the room where the odor originated. The incident will be forwarded to housing for discipline.

Ally Offerdahl, 19, Paige Menke, 18, and Paul Lanigan, 18, were arrested at 9:13 p.m. March 9 in Lot 5 on suspicion of being minors in possession of alcohol.

All subjects were processed and released on signature bond.

An officer on foot patrol detected a strong odor of marijuana at 11:31 p.m.

March 9 on the ground floor of South Yeater. The officer was unable to determine the source of the odor.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 4:51 p.m. March 10 on the ground floor of The Crossing - South at Holden. The officer was unable to locate the source of the odor.

A verbal disturbance involving four male students was reported at 6:04 p.m.

March 10 in Hosey Hall. After an investigation, the students were warned to not contact each other and one student was banned from Hosey. The incident will be referred for discipline.

Erin Beauchamp, 19, was arrested at 10:43 p.m. March 11 in Lot 41 on suspicion of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The officer reported finding Beauchamp in her car appearing to be unconscious. The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana and noticed that Beauchamp’s eyes were bloodshot and glossy. Beauchamp was fingerprinted and photographed before being released on a signature bond and a summons to appear in court.

Christian Fausel, 19, was arrested at 2:08 a.m. March 12 in Lot 49 on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The officer reported noticing a car parked in a strange manner and discovered Fausel appearing to be unconscious. Upon opening the window, the officer detected a strong marijuana odor coming from Fausel’s car, and noticed his eyes were glossy, pupils dilated and said he seemed confused. After asking if he had been smoking marijuana, Fausel showed the officer a glass ashtray. Fausel was fingerprinted and photographed before being released on a signature bond and with a summons to appear in court.

An officer was requested to investigate a noise complaint at 1:29 a.m. March 13 on the fourth floor of South Yeater.

The officer detected an odor of marijuana from inside the room while speaking with the parties. The parties admitted they were around marijuana earlier that evening. The incident will be forwarded for discipline.

Trey Pettit, 19, was arrested at 9:45 p.m.

March 13 in South Yeater on suspicion of delivering a controlled substance. Two other students were referred for University discipline. Pettit was released pending the filing of formal charges through the Johnson County Circuit Court.

Bryce Baldwin, 20, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. March 13 in South Yeater on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Baldwin was released on signature bond after being processed. An additional student was referred for University discipline.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 10:03 p.m. March 14 on the first floor of Todd Hall. The individuals inside the source room stated four males were previously in the room who smelled like marijuana, but refused to provide any more details. The incident will be forwarded for discipline.

Christian Fausel, 19, was arrested at 11:59 p.m. March 14 in the Yeater courtyard on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance after an officer responded to Fausel parking in a no parking zone.

March 29 - April 11 | The Muleskinner Fausel was released after processing with pending formal charges through the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 12:07 p.m. March 15 in Hosey Hall. The reporting party advised that their shared suite bathroom smelled like marijuana. The officers contacted the parties in the other room, who admitted to attending a gathering in Lot 34 where marijuana was present. The incident will be referred for discipline.

A Facilities, Planning and Operations truck was reported to be damaged at 1:48 p.m. March 15 at the Southeast Complex when the truck made a sharp turn, causing a steel post on a dumpster to tear a gash into the side of the truck. The dumpster was not damaged.

A Facilities, Planning and Operations custodial van was reported to have been struck by an unknown vehicle at 1:59 p.m. March 15 in Lot 52. The white Dodge Grand Caravan received damage to the front driver’s side corner.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 12:28 a.m. March 16 on the first floor of Bradshaw Hall. The officer detected a marijuana odor, but was unable to locate the origin.

Daesean Jones, 20, was arrested at 1:11 a.m. March 16 in Lot 10 on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia after the officer detected a strong marijuana odor coming from within Jones’ vehicle. Jones was processed and released on signature bond with a summons to appear in court.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 5:38 a.m. March 16 on the first floor of South Yeater. The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana but could not locate the source.

A student worker reported to have seen an individual who was banned from all University residence halls at 11:35 a.m.

March 16. The individual could not be located, but matched the description of the banned student. A written report was completed by the reporting party.

A group of individuals were reported to have been standing in the middle of the street at 11:21 p.m. March 17 in the 100 block of Houx Street. After an investigation, a male and female had been in an argument earlier that evening. The male and female were separated for the remainder of the evening.

Tyler Darr, 18, was arrested at 1:53 a.m.

March 18 on suspicion of careless driving and possession of alcohol by a minor.

Darr was processed and released on signature bond with a summons to appear in court.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 9:58 p.m. March 22 on the ground floor of The Crossing - South at Holden. Upon arrival, officers detected the odor and located a burnt marijuana cigarette on the ledge of the stairwell. The cigarette was seized and the suspect was later identified when he attempted to retrieve the cigarette. The individual will be referred for University discipline.

Noah Sipkin, 26, was arrested at 1:27 a.m. March 23 at Pine and Washington streets on suspicion of urinating in public and resisting arrest. Sipkin was released on a summons to appear in court.

Dennis Delapp, 45, and Catherine Klebba, 25, were arrested at 7:06 a.m. March 22 on suspicion of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Dennis Delapp was also arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana or a synthetic cannabinoid, unlawful possession of a weapon and delivering marijuana or a synthetic cannabinoid.

An incident of assault was reported at 7:39 a.m. March 25 in the 700 block of Anderson Street after a roommate hit the reporting party in the eye. The incident is still under investigation.

Illegal dumping was reported at 12:15 p.m. March 25 in the 1400 block of East Hale Lake Road.
