Burg Fest starts Friday

A two-day outdoor festival will take place this weekend in downtown Warrensburg. Burg Fest, Warrensburg’s fifth annual festival with live music, a classic car show, an outdoor movie, a wing eating contest and a 5K Glow Run will kick off at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22. The opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Judicial Center, followed by live music from Random Access and The Nace Brothers on the main stage in the beer garden. Saturday, Sept.

McNair Scholars program seeking scholars The McNair Scholars program is

currently searching for the next group of McNair Scholars. An open house will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in Humphreys 116 for students who are interested. The McNair Scholars program prepares undergraduates for future studies toward a Ph.D. As many as half the students at UCM are eligible to participate in the program. Students must meet with Kari Azevedo prior to receiving an application.

Center for Global Education hosts grand opening UCM’s Center for Global Education is hosting its grand opening from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 in Union 301. The Center for Global Education is formerly known as the International Center. The center has been restructured to provide more services for students, faculty and staff.

Advantage Program benefits special education major

The UCM Advantage program gave one special education major the kick in the butt she needed.

Leigha Zank, a 19-year-old sophomore from Independence, said she didn’t even realize she would receive the scholarship.

“I had terrible grades in high school, so I just figured that was all I was capable of. I ended my first year at UCM with A’s and B’s, and receiving this scholarship made me want to work even harder,” she said.

Zank was part of the first class to be awarded this competitive $250 scholarship and said the UCM Advantage Program helped improve her study habits.

Carmen Binder, learning specialist with Academic Enrichment, said the university introduced the UCM Advantage

program in fall 2016. She said the program is for selected incoming freshmen who fall just shy of admission criteria but demonstrate promise and are motivated to pursue a college career.

“The scholarship was designed to reward the students for their hard work and determination,” Binder said. The program has two academic specialists on staff who make it a priority to help the students with what they need and make sure they meet program goals. The goals include reaching a 2.5 GPA, attending 85 percent of class and checking in with their support coach regularly for two semesters in order to be eligible for the scholarship Binder said.

She said the first semester of the program had 163 freshman students, and there are currently 244 freshmen.

This program offers support, tutoring, and activities that help students get to know each other. After improving their

grades and study habits, students receive a $250 scholarship as a cash reward incentive.

Zank was one of those students.

She said that she was invited to join the UCM Advantage Program via a letter in the mail before the start of her freshman year and signed up. She said she didn't know about the scholarship but joined to improve her study habits.

She said she had low motivation and low expectations for herself and her college career.

Zank said she set the bar low because she had average grades and tests scores.

During several meetings and discussions on goal setting with Carmen Binder, Zank said she was motivated to do better.

“Carmen Binder really helped me and opened up a lot of opportunities for me,” she said.

Zank said she recommends the pro-

gram for freshmen like her. She was able to put her scholarship toward her tuition for her next semester at UCM. Binder said she is proud of Zank and her accomplishments and helps her as much as possible.

“No one is turned away,” Binder said.

“These services are for everyone.”

Binder said this program is a great support system for many students and she invites anyone to join and use the resources that are available.

She said this program encourages students to go to a four-year university and complete the full experience as opposed to attending a community college or not finishing school.

“We know they can be successful here,” Binder said.

Anyone is welcome to apply for the program or sign up for tutoring online or in the Academic Enrichment office located on the third floor of the library.

KMOS wins emmy for 'Missouri Life' episode

KMOS, the local PBS station, won its first Emmy in the magazine category for an episode of “Missouri Life” featuring the community of Silver Dollar City.

Roy Millen, producer at KMOS, said the staff received the Emmy from the Mid-America chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Saturday, Sept. 9, during a black-tie dinner at the Chase Park Plaza hotel in St. Louis.

“I could hardly believe it,” Millen said.

Roy Millen, Eric Boedeker and Christy Millen created the episode with Tom Phillips, the production manager, who left KMOS last year. Meredith Hoenes, a TV personality who has worked at stations in Columbia and Kansas City hosted the episode, which was called “Missouri Life Special Presentation: Silver Dollar City.”

Roy Millen said the production crew spent four days in Branson last September to show what Silver Dollar City had to offer, such as the famous Marvel Cave, the food, the history, the people and the community.

“Missouri Life” is a series on KMOS that features communities in Missouri and has segments like “Pride and Place,” which tells the history of a community; “Remarkable Missourian,” which tells the story of someone doing incredible things in the state; “Missouri Flavour,” featuring restaurants; “Made in Missouri,” which tells about the communities businesses in a community, and “Cameo,” which showcases artists, such as musicians, painters, performers; and a beauty segment to show off Missouri’s landscapes.

with the Missouri Life magazine, published by Greg Wood, to create the series.

Missouri Life magazine is a travel guide to Missouri which Millen said show brings to life.

Boedeker said the magazine originally tried to make its own series, before partnering with KMOS. Roy Millen said the magazine made a pilot episode that was never completed, and then realized it was a lot of work that required a professional crew.

“They only had one guy doing it,” Millen said. “That’s when they contacted us.”

He said KMOS wanted to do a series like “Missouri Life” for a long time. He said KMOS used to have a show called “Central Missouri Focus,” and the station wanted to bring it back. When the magazine asked to partner with them, KMOS took the opportunity.

Millen said the magazine provides a list of suggestions of communities to film for episodes, and KMOS picks the one they see as the best fit for the show. He said this particular episode was a special one in the series because usually the show does not include theme parks. He said Silver Dollar City is basically a community on its own.

“It’s like a town within a town,” Millen said. “I remember going there as a kid...it made an impression on me.”

Christy Millen said she had not been to Silver Dollar City in 15 years before filming the episode, while Roy Millen had not visited there in 30 years.

“It’s fun to see how it had changed and how it had stayed the same,” she said.

Roy Millen said KMOS does not enter

the Emmys often, usually once a year. This year they had sent in two episodes of “Missouri Life” to compete with each other. “‘Missouri Life’ was something we are very proud of that we wanted to share,” he said.

Boedeker said KMOS was nominated last year for an Emmy, and the staff was disappointed when they didn’t receive the award.

“I remember telling Christy in the parking lot, ‘We are not going to another one of those and not coming home with anything,’” Boedeker said.

Boedeker said it was exciting to win the Emmy so soon in his career in television.

He said this is his third year out of college, and that is was amazing to be on the same stage as other professional broadcasters.

“We worked really hard last season,” Boedeker said. “It was a lot of hard days.”

Christy Millen said winning the award made her feel good about her career at KMOS. “For me it kind of served as validation that, ‘Hey I can do this,’” she said. “I picked the right job.”

When they announced KMOS won the Emmy, Christy Millen said she was so happy that she could not contain her emotions.

“I could hardly believe it,” Christy Miller said. “I completely lost it. I was so overcome with emotion.”

Roy Millen said KMOS plans on winning more Emmys. He said winning these awards helps promote their station, gain viewership and inspire more projects.

“It’s great to be rewarded,” he said.

UCM Night Ryder program continues to ride

Although the budget cuts have been affecting departments left and right, one thing that wasn’t put into jeopardy was student safety.

The Night Ryder is a free service the school provides for students who do not have a stable source of transportation to get around Warrensburg, and it takes you to many locations on and off-campus.

Beth Rutt, director of student activities, said the budget for this student transportation service was in jeopardy but was preserved.

“We did look at perhaps having to cut back some of the hours of operation, but

when we discussed student safety we decided to not make any cuts,” she said.

Arlanda Brown, junior sociology major, said her previous school didn’t have transportation services like Night Ryder.

“I started using the Night Ryder my first semester here, which was spring of 2017 when I lived in the Greenwood apartments,” Brown said.

“I don’t have to pay as much money for a cab, and it’s more convenient,” she said. “It takes you to Walmart, the Dollar Store, Foster Knox, the baseball field and the campus apartments as far as I know.”

Dierra Austin, sophomore social work major, also noted the programs convenience.

“It is very helpful for college students who don’t have vehicles,” Austin said.

If you do have a car on or off-campus, the Night Ryder is still always there to take you where you need to be, just as long as you are within walking distance of a pick-up spot.

“I stay behind Ellis, so I just walk down the street to the pick-up spot at the Ellis parking lot,” Brown said.

Austin said having to ask for rides can be inconvenient.

“My friend and I started using it our first semester of freshman year, but for the first couple weeks we didn’t know where the stops were at and the time,” she said.

“It even took me to get my nails done.”

Ama Adams, junior social work major, said she didn’t know what the Night Ryder service was until late freshman year.

Adams wasn’t familiar with the trans-

portation service until a friend explained it to her.

“It picked us up from the library and took us to Nattinger/Bradshaw Hall, but the bus was empty except for my friends and I,” Adams said.

The Night Ryder is available from 5 to 10 p.m, Wednesday through Saturday, with pickup spots at the library, Union, Fitzgerald Hall, Greenwood Village, Central Village, Walmart, Ellis complex, Foster Knox, Houts/Hosey Halls, The Crossing and the UCM baseball field.

UCM Art Gallery opens three new exhibits

The University of Central Missouri Gallery of Art and Design is a busy place during the fall and spring semesters.

Three new exhibits will open Sept.

25 with a reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26. They will include a selection of lithographs from the Lawrence Lithography Workshop in the outer gallery, an exhibition of photography during protests in the main gallery and a science fiction illustration in Gallery 115.

Christian Cutler, the gallery director said the gallery contains three spaces for art.

“Essentially there are three spaces that make up the Galley of Art and Design. The outer gallery is the space you walk into right out of the atrium of the Art Center,” Cutler said. “The larger main gallery (is) in the back and then down and across the hall is Gallery 115, which is a more experimental space.”

The main gallery will feature an exhibit called the “Poetry of Protest.” The gallery is collaborating with the American Democracy Project at UCM for Constitution Week. Photos in this room will be from protests that professor of music, Michael Bersin and professor Emeritus Jerry Schmidt have photographed in the region and outside of the Midwest.

In Gallery 115, the department is

bringing back former adjunct professor Jeff Porter to display the drawings he completed for a science fiction card game. "The Art of Xenofera" will feature more than 50 of his illustrations.

The gallery starts the school year off with the faculty exhibition every year.

This showcases the Department of Art and Design studio artists, art educators, designers, illustrators, animation -everything that is taught in the department is in the exhibit.

“The faculty show is a great way to find out what your professors of art and design have been doing for the last year,” he said.

The exhibition opened Aug. 17 and closed Sept. 16.

Some of the faculty art speaks to professor’s lives outside of school.

For example, Cutler said professor of graphic design and illustration Allison Kerek, who recently became engaged, displayed her animated illustration consisting of a woman spinning in different wedding dress designs, and each time the woman turned the dress changed.

“It’s really neat to see artwork that is created that has a lot to do with exactly what the artist is doing, thinking, feeling, et cetera,” Cutler said.

During the faculty show, one of the first noticeable pieces was a pile of insulin pumps created by professor Mick Luehrman.

“Those are collected from his son needing insulin and being diabetic,” Cutler said. “It just makes for a really interesting, beautiful object when all piled together.”

Austin Guyett, a freshman studio art in sculpting major, said professor Matthew Zupnick’s sculpture, titled “Simply,” was his favorite because it was made out of screws, and felt it was a unique piece.

At the end of each semester, the gallery hosts the senior show. Andrea Simon, senior studio art major with an emphasis in painting, is scheduled to have her show in spring 2018.

“My preparation for senior show has been not only all of my time here at UCM, but really my entire life -past, present and future -up until the work that will be installed,” Simon said.

She said her ideas begin as concepts then develop into images and materials that communicate an idea.

“A looming deadline always creates pressure, which for me makes a lot of great things happen in the studio,” Simon said.

She said Professor Cutler is great to work with.

“He is very flexible and allows young artists the chance to experience professional situations,” she said.

The art gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

When Kyle Samford isn’t fueling airplanes at Skyhaven Airport, practicing aircraft recognition for Flight Team, or attending conferences for the Missouri Airport Managers Association, he likes to spend his time off the ground.

Samford is a senior aviation management major who received his private pilot license in 2015 with 50 hours of flight time. As the average pilot typically receives their private license between 60 and 70, Samford was a fast learner and excelled with his lessons.

Samford has now spent 80 hours in the sky.

“I would say the views are my favorite thing about flying, you get to see things from a different perspective,” Samford said. “It is something that you realize that not everybody gets to do.”

Not only is Samford a pilot, but he is also vice president of MAMA and AAAE. “Both organizations are similar, but

they are not the same,” Samford said.

“MAMA is within Missouri, and AAAE is within the United States. Both deal with aviation management, our main goal is to build connections and possibly get future employment.”

MAMA and AAAE host multiple conferences each year.

“There is a national conference for AAAE and this previous year, it was held in Long Beach, California,” Samford said. “A group of eight of us went to California and we learned more about aviation in general, especially with airports, that’s one of the emphasis’ of AAAE and MAMA.” Samford is involved with Flight Team also, an organization where pilots can practice and sharpen their aeronautical skills.

Samford competes in an aircraft recognition competition and power-on landings competition for Flight Team.

“For aircraft recognition, you have to say the make of the plane, model, and a nickname if there is one,” Samford said.

“For landing competitions, there is a chalked box on the runway and the mid-

dle line in the box is your aiming point.

It’s like golf, you want to get the least amount of points and landing on it gets you the least.”

He said not only does landing matter, but also your traffic pattern, how you fly it, and what exactly you do during the flight.

Samford has worked at AirVenture for the past two summers as a camp counsel-

or for the Air Academy. It is held at the Wittman Regional Airport at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is an annual event for people with a passion for aviation.

“The campers were from 12 to 18 years old. I taught air compress rockets, space history, metal sheet working and engines.” Samford said.

UCM ADMINISTRATIO UPDATES HEALTHCAR FACULTY RESPONDS

The University of Central Missouri administration updated the employee healthcare plan at the beginning of September. Employees now have the opportunity to choose between three options.

The new addition is the Exclusive Provider Organization plan, and UCM President Chuck ambrose described it as “groundbreaking in higher education” in a memo sent out to employees Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The EPO is designed to provide high level benefits while still limiting cost increases for employees and the university.

The EPO guarantees premiums for the next three years.

“UCM is pleased to have different options for health care coverage for 2018, and we are grateful for everyone who is committed to making a difference in this important area,” Ambrose said in the memo.

He said the university started developing this new plan with Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Kansas City two years ago, long before UCM was taking on state budget cut reductions.

“We realized that as an institution we have choices. We can stay where we are

and make no changes in our health insurance coverage, which will result in employees paying more for insurance, or we can seek new opportunities to make our medical insurance program more financially stable, which ultimately benefits employees,” Ambrose said in the memo.

The healthcare updates were a hot topic at the Faculty Senate meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13. Many faculty senators and even a voice from the gallery expressed opinions on the updates and their concern on the lack of the faculty involvement.

Mike Bersin, a music professor at UCM, initiated a motion for the Faculty Senate Salary and Fringe Benefits committee to bring a motion to express their concern about the faculty involvement in the administration's decision about the health care updates.

This motion was seconded and senators voted in favor of it.

Dan Crews, a history professor, said he didn’t understand why the faculty hadn’t been aware of the updates sooner.

“The chart says we should be involved.

They don’t have to listen to us, but the chart says we should be involved. The president’s memo said that this had been

in discussion for two or three years, so I just don’t understand,” Crews said.

Steve Price, an associate professor in the communication department and the Faculty Senate vice president, spoke for Ambrose and said the thought process behind the decision is that the previous plans are still in place and the EPO is just an additional option for faculty.

“He’s (Ambrose) also not seeing this as a blowup change to our health care benefits, whether it is or not,” Price said.

Two options are continuations of existing plans. Those plans are the Preferred Provider Organization and the Qualified High Deductible Plan. Both of these plans are facing design changes that are unknown at the time.

According to the university healthcare benefits package from the Office of Human Resources, the university offers comprehensive health and welfare benefits plans including the PPO health plan, vision, dental and life insurance for employees and their families.

The packet also says that health savings accounts for employees who choose the QHDP and Health Savings Account health insurance option will be adminis-

tered through UMB Bank and the university contributes $720 to the HSA and the employee is given a UMB debit card.The funds are deposited at $30 per day starting Jan. 15 and the funds are to be used for qualified medical expenses.

James Loch, a professor in the School of Environmental, Physical and Applied Science, voiced his opinion on the inclusion of faculty in administrative decisions by mentioning other problems for faculty within the university.

“I understand the strategy of trying to save the university money as a whole, especially with the budget crisis, but how much longer are we going to take no raise, watch inflation increase our costs and take a bite as they resolve to increase the cost of our health care?” Loch said.

The Office of Human Resources plans on communicating information in coverage soon to ensure that faculty is informed about the opportunities within the healthcare plan. There will be informational meetings regarding the plans. To find out more information on these, keep up with UCM Daily.

LITTER… HAS LAYERS

I’m frustrated about what I perceive as an issue with litter and trash in Warrensburg. I’ve explained what I’ve seen, how much I’ve seen, and I don’t think I’m without a case.

Until last week, that’s all I had: my own observations and the statistics I was able to obtain just by being a citizen of Warrensburg.

As it turns out, after getting in touch with Mayor Bryan Jacobs, City Manager Harold Stewart, and code enforcement inspector Ray Almaguer, there are many things to consider regarding litter.

I reported there were no citations issued for littering through Aug. 30. Although true, it reveals very little.

What that number doesn’t show is that our police department has been understaffed for a while.

Since Aug. 30, I have been trying to get in touch with someone from the Warrens-

burg Police Department, but apart from a voicemail I received from Chief Rich Lockhart on Tuesday, Sept. 5, while I was in class, I have not been able to.

Stewart said understaffing forces the police department to further prioritize the calls they receive and the issues to which they respond.

He also said the lack of citations doesn’t show the number of times police may have simply issued an offender a warning and tried to work with them instead.

Stewart pointed out that there is a focus on garnering a positive relationship between the police department and the community.

“Every time someone is written a ticket, it can demean good public relations,” he said.

Is it worth creating that rift – or widening it – over a candy bar wrapper?

Along those lines, Jacobs asked me what turned out to be a deceptively complex question: “Do you want police stopping people for dropping a bottle on the ground?”

My initial answer was yes. Easy.

But then I thought about it.

What if the officer is driving? Do they stop, get out, and ticket that person? It seems a little much, but I guess it’d be OK if the officer wasn’t otherwise occupied.

What if they were driving in the other direction? Do they turn around? Do they perform an action-movie style U-turn in the middle of the street? What if the person runs? Does the officer give chase?

Over a bottle?

Beyond the police, there is Almaguer, the only code enforcement inspector for the city. He responds to ordinance infractions.

When a nuisance is reported, Almaguer sends a notice. Everyone responds differently, but he said the notice can be all that’s needed.

“Normally, they’ll clean up their area,” he said.

If they don’t, they are given an official 10-day warning, which gives them 10 days to resolve the issue.

If they still don’t, they get turned over

to the prosecuting attorney and the case goes to court. That is time-consuming and expensive.

“You have to pay the prosecutor, the municipal judge, court staff,” Stewart said. “There’s officers providing security, and they may testify. You have to pay staff to do initial investigations and testify.”

Another consideration is the rights of citizens. They must be given time to comply with the warnings issued, and they are protected by due process, which means it can be a while between the time the initial warning is issued and the time a resolution is reached.

“It can take months,” Stewart said.

“Sometimes, it can take a year to 18 months.”

For just one case, the city is paying people the whole time for several months.

I asked why Almaguer was the only code enforcement inspector in a city with a population of more than 18,000.

More than bottles and cans: A collection of junk I find in Warrensburg

Until recently, there was a bra in a tree on Clark Street. I didn’t pick it up because I didn’t want to go into that person’s yard and take underwear out of their tree, just in case it was important to them. But I want you to know there was a yellow bra in a tree on Clark Street. For a while.

There have been a lot of clothes. I’m not certain how this is a thing; you leave your house with a shirt and pants, and then you return with just pants… Does

that happen?

I’m impressed at how much lip balm is out there. Several different flavors of ChapStick, a couple of tubes of Carmex and one tube of Herpecin L. There are potentially a lot of people with chapped lips walking around town, and one with an untreated cold sore.

I’ve found multiple tampon applicators. With the first one I found, I assumed something had happened to someone’s trash and it got lose. It happens. But I keep finding them. I’m not terrified of tampons in the way that is an easily imaginable cliché thing for a guy to be terrified

of. However, I know how they’re used, and that makes the frequency with which I’m finding them out and about a little… strange.

Similarly, I’ve found two pregnancy tests. I couldn’t tell what the results were, but that isn’t what’s important here.

Recently, I picked up a couple of napkins from QuikTrip, a cup from Dunkin Donuts (an actual Dunkin Donuts retail location, not something available from a grocery store), a receipt from the Mid-Continent Public Library, and a receipt from a toll plaza from the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. What do all of these

things have in common?

None of them are from Warrensburg.

We’re importing trash from other places.

That’s annoying.

When properly disposed of, trash doesn’t raise questions. Some junk I’ve found amongst the litter in our city does raise a few though.

I suppose I get why empty food and drink containers end up as litter. Someone had them, emptied them, and then didn’t want to carry them anymore. I don’t support it, but I get it.

But doesn’t seem to be the case in Warresnburg.

It isn’t as simple as hiring a few more code enforcement inspectors. If there isn’t money in the budget, it doesn’t matter if it’s a perceived need or not – it can’t happen.

The city has adapted.

“We’ve trained staff to look out for these things and alert Ray,” Stewart said. “He’s not the only one.”

In lieu of city officials or police officers, wouldn’t signs discouraging littering help?

Maybe not.

“First, signs are really expensive,” Stewart said. “They also have a history in this area of disappearing or being damaged. Second, signs can be ignored. There are signs up around Lions Lake that say not to feed the ducks and the geese; there are people that go there specifically to do that. Third, enforcement still requires an officer to be there to enforce it.”

He said that with other projects that aren’t being completed because of a lack of funding, tracking down funding for such signage isn’t something the city is willing to do right now.

That’s fair.

Especially now that I know.

I also know that Almaguer voluntarily organizes city clean-ups during his off hours, simply because it helps. And after my initial frustration with not being able to contact anyone, Jacobs met with me for over an hour on a Friday night, and Stewart and Almaguer met with me for over an hour on the following Tuesday, giving me enough information for this and future stories.

It isn’t apathy on the city’s part that is causing this issue.

Even so, the city’s ability to control this issue is limited by the same two things that limit everything: time and money. Without the willingness to change our own behaviors, this problem can get worse. Quickly.

At the end of every day, whether there are signs or not, whether there is police action or not, whether there are 100 code enforcement officers or just one, the responsibility of keeping our community clean falls on us as citizens.

The litter that accumulates on our streets and our sidewalks – every bottle, can, fast-food bag and obscure item that defies comprehension – is a result of a general carelessness and disregard for the effects of our actions over things that we were content to carry when they were full but inexplicably find too cumbersome to tote around when they were empty.

There can’t be too much blame cast upon the city for this. Perhaps they can do more; but, really, they shouldn’t have to do anything at all.

The actual cost of littering will be the next subject I’ll shine light on.

Mules put the 'W' in Family Weekend

The University of Central Missouri Mules defeated the Missouri Western Griffons 66-44 at Walton Stadium Saturday during UCM’s Family Weekend.

Both teams came into the game with an even 1-1 record. The Mules received the opening kickoff but started the game with a quick three-and-out.

After Missouri Western wasn’t able to get any offense of their own going, the punt team took the field. A high snap gave the ball to UCM in the red zone. A few plays into the possession, freshman running back Devante Turner ran seven yards for a touchdown. After an unsuccessful PAT attempt, the Mules led 6-0.

The Griffons proceeded to drive, but a sack from Austin Miller forced them to settle for a 46-yard field goal attempt, which was knocked in to cut the UCM lead in half. Neither offense could muster any points over the next couple of possessions. Then a fumble by Turner was recovered by Missouri Western which opened the door for Josh Caldwell to run the Griffons into the end zone for a 10-6 lead.

The Mules quickly retaliated with a drive and the end of the opening quarter. Brooke Bolles thrived and ended the drive by hitting Kyrion Parker for a twenty-one-yard touchdown to reclaim the lead, 10-13. The Mules defense picked up where the offense left off, forcing a short possession for the Griffons.

The Mules were met with a fourth down situation early on in the drive, but Turner rushed to pick up the first. Bolles polished off the drive with another impressive touchdown pass, this one to Kyle Echols. This was Bolles second of four touchdown passes of the afternoon.

Missouri Western looked to cut into the 20-10 deficit they faced, but on thirdand-12, a host of Mules defenders sacked quarterback Dom Marino in the backfield.

Central Missouri’s offense looked to pile on to their lead, but Bolles was intercepted.

The Griffons couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, going three and out. UCM’s next drive looked promising with Koby Wilkerson running for a first down, but another Bolles pass was tipped and intercepted. Missouri Western didn’t squander their chance, with running back Derek Gray Jr. effectively moving the chains on the ground. He finished the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run, narrowing the UCM lead to three points.

After a short UCM drive with no results, Missouri Western kept the momentum going, booting in a 46-yard field goal to end the first half. The game moved into the second half with a 20-20 tie, with the Griffons getting the first chance to break it.

Break it they did, capping off a solid opening drive with a 42-yard field goal for a three-point advantage. Brooke Bolles followed by leading the Mules on a key drive that was assisted by simultaneous roughing the passer and personal foul calls on the Griffons; moving the ball thirty yards for Central Missouri. Koby Wilkerson closed out the drive with an eleven-yard touchdown run.

The Mules defense then recovered a fumble on second-and-1, but quickly turned the ball back over to Missouri Western. The Griffons wasted little time, running for a touchdown and 30-27 lead.

Devante Turner payed it back with a tremendous drive for UCM, capped off with a five-yard scoring run. After a blocked extra point, UCM led 33-30.

Central Missouri took over again after their defense stifled the Griffon offense.

Brooke Bolles found Jovante Siglar for an 48-yard touchdown. This gave the Mules a 40-30 lead with the third quarter winding down. The riches continued for UCM as a bad decision by the Missouri Western kick returner ended in a safety. This gave Football, see page 14

Are Koby Wilkerson and Devante Turner the future of the Mules backfield?

At the beginning of the 2017 season, there was not a clear answer as to who would lead the Mules backfield.

Gabe Vandiver graduated, Marquel McNac was no longer on the team, and Xavier Washpun remained out due to injury. The absence of these three running backs created a need for a fresh set of faces in the backfield. Devante Turner and Koby Wilkerson made a compelling argument for the job in the Mules 66-44 victory over Missouri Western at Walton Stadium Kennedy field on Saturday.

Wilkerson totaled 122 rushing yards and Turner ran for 64 yards and a touchdown two weeks ago in the season opener against the Pittsburg State Gorillas. The duo’s first outing, however, was followed by a trip to Fort Hays during which they ran for a combined 31 yards. The vast difference between their week one and week two production raised the concern: will the pair of redshirt freshmen be reliable moving forward?

Mules fans didn’t have to wait long to find out.

Just over three minutes into the game the Mules defense recovered a fumbled Missouri Western’s 15-yard line. Two plays later, Turner ran seven yards into the end zone to put up the Mules’ first points of the contest.

The other half of the freshmen duo made his presence felt early in the third quarter. The Mules trailed the Griffons 23-20 shortly after halftime, but Wilkerson regained the lead with an 11-yard touchdown run.

Later that quarter Turner out-ran the Griffons defense for a 40yard gain. He put the exclamation point on the drive with a fiveyard touchdown.

Turner led the Mules with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Wilkerson finished the day with 80 yards and touchdown.

The freshmen’s combined rushing yards against Missouri Western nearly doubled what they accomplished in their week-one breakout performances. This suggests that their production against Pittsburg State better reflects their abilities than did their production in their week two game against the Fort Hays State.

While the game against the Griffons points towards a positive trend for Turner and Wilkerson, only time will tell if they can retain a prominent role in the Mules offense.

Competition on the depth chart could increase if Xavier Washpun is trusted with more carries. The senior running back rushed for 12 yards on three carries against the Griffons. The Missouri Western game marked Washpun’s first action since his injury.

The Mules backfield will look to build off their momentum as the team takes on Emporia State at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in Emporia, Kansas.

LADY TIGERS EDGE ST. MICHAEL IN CLOSE CONTEST

Warrensburg volleyball was back in action Thursday against St. Michael the Archangel (Lee’s Summit), winning a close contest in three sets. The Lady Tigers dropped the first set 25-23, but claimed the final two sets 25-19 and 26-24.

The Lady Tigers accumulated a sizable winning streak earlier in the season, which included a win at the Higginsville Spikefest Tournament before falling to St. Pius in three straight sets to end the streak at 10 games. The Lady Tigers were looking to get back on track against a familiar foe in St. Michael, a team they defeated earlier in the season in three sets.

The first set remained close the entire way, with the two teams being tied at 10-10, 16-16, and 23-23 at respective points in the contest before the Guardians managed to pull away for a 23-25 victory.

Losing the first seemed like a manifestation of previous issues for the Lady Tigers. Coach Trudy Fleeman attributed slow starts as a problem in the loss to St. Pius as well as other games throughout the season.

Despite these issues, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 9-3 lead to begin the second set, forcing the Guardians to call a timeout. The timeout proved beneficial, as the Guardians managed to tie the set at 15-15, but the Lady Tigers managed to take control, outscoring the Guardians 10-4 to close the set, giving them the 25-19 win.

The final set played out much like the first, with neither team able to gain a sizable advantage. The Guardians lead early at 6-8 before the Lady Tigers took the lead back by a score of 16-14. The Guardians managed to tie the set at 22-22, but the Lady Tigers buckled down to take the set 26-24.

Coach Fleeman said a strong mental attitude was the key to pulling out the win, and the team is taking steps to meet their goals.

The Lady Tigers improve to 12-2 on the season.

They return to action at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at home against conference rival Smith Cotton.

SPORTS SPORTS UPDATES: UPDATES: Three-peat for Dilkes Ana Dilkes earned MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week for the third week in a row following another pair of shut-out victories Friday and Sunday.

Dilkes held Lindenwood scoreless Friday during the Jennies 7-0 victory and shut-out the Northwest Bearcats 4-0 Sunday. She totaled six saves against Lindenwood and two against Northwest. She ranks first in the MIAA with 29 saves so far this season.

The senior goalkeeper has yet to give up a goal through the Jennies’ first six games of the season and currently leads the MIAA with six shut-outs. Her shut-out against Northwest brought her career total to 49, the most in MIAA history and the second most in the NCAA Division II record books.

The Dilkes and the Jennies are set to face their toughest competition of the season in a top-25 matchup against Missouri Western.

The Jennies will host No. 23 Missouri Western Griffons at 7 p.m. Sept. 23.

Jennies golf finishes second at the Golden Bear Classic The Jennies shot a team total of 658 to place second at the Golden Bear Classic at the Edinburgh USA Golf Course in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota Sept. 17 and 18.

The team shot 328 on day-one of the tournament and 330 the second day to finish at 82-over par, the second-best score of 13 teams in the tournament and 41 strokes behind the first place Augustana (SD).

Olivia Sobaski was the top placing Jennie at 15-over par, tying for ninth place with a final score of 158. Elizabeth Leath shot a stroke better than Maddison Grisham on day-one of the tournament, but Grishman shot a stroke better the second day as the duo tied for 13th place with a score of 164 (+20). Taelyn Entriken shot 29-over to place 31st and Blake Betke shot 30-over to tie for 34th.

The Jennies’ next contest will take place at Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville on Sept. 25 and 26 as the team takes part in the MIAA Fall Preview.

Volleyball takes three of four at Arkansas Tech Crossover After falling in their first set, the Jennies won three straight at the Arkansas Tech Crossover in Russellville, Arkansas Sept. 14-16.

The Jennies opened the tournament by dropping a 5-set match to Arkansas Tech. The match marked Piontek’s first loss against a Great American Conference team and it was also the Jennies’ first loss against Arkansas Tech over their six meetings. Aubree Bell led the Jennies with 10 kills, Ally Offerdahl totaled 36 assists and Kylie Hohlen accumulated 18 digs.

In the following contest, the Jennies faced Alabama-Huntsville and picked up their first victory of the tournament. Although the Jennies only needed three sets to secure the win, the match was prolonged by a 33-31 Jennies victory in the first set. The opening set proved to be the highest-scoring Jennies set since 2005. Aubrey Fisher, Kasey Hohlen and Rylee Neigenfind each recorded double-digit kills. Ally Offerdahl totaled 34 assists and Kylie Hohlen had a career-high: 36 digs.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Kasey Hohlen and Offerdahl were named to the all-tournament team.

The Jennies improve to 9-3 on the season following their trip to Arkansas Tech and are set for their first MIAA matchup in their home opener. They will return home to host the Northwest Missouri Bearcats at 6 p.m. Sept. 22.

Mules Golf ties for third at NSU Golf Classic Mules Golf shot 284 on their third and final day of competition to tie Harding University for third place at the NSU Golf Classic in Muskogee, Oklahoma Sept. 17-19.

As a team, the Mules shot a total score of 864 to finish at 12-over par, 16 strokes behind the first-place Central Oklahoma Bronchos.

Sam Parrot and Ian Barnes each shot 2-over to tie for 14th place among the 94 individual competitors. Their total score of 815 was the best of any Mule. John Bonabora and Shayne Allan also tied each other. They shot 5-over to tie four other competitors for 23rd place. JD Pedersen tied for 60th place after shooting 13-over and Matt Hoemann tied for 64th.

Mules Golf will be back in action at the JR Watkins Invite in Winona, Minnesota Sept. 25 and 26.

The UCM ground game remained strong, putting them in range for a thirty-two-yard field goal from Alex Langer.

The score put UCM’s lead at 45-30. The Griffons took over at their own 23-yard line, desperately needing a score. Quarterback Dom Marino proceeded to answer the bell with a 67-yard touchdown bolt.

Still down by eight, Missouri Western needed a stop. Brooke Bolles didn’t allow it, however, completing a pass to Kyrion Parker that went for seventy-one yards and the touchdown.

The next two possessions saw the two teams trade interceptions. The Griffons took advantage of their pick, as quarterback Corey Bertini completed a fortythree-yard pass which set up a touchdown run by Keylan Mack. That was the last of the Griffons’ scoring for the day; they still trailed the Mules, 52-44.

UCM then ran towards the finish line with Koby Wilkerson getting a huge sixty-five-yard gain that set up a 14-yard Devante Turner touchdown run. After Missouri Western got the ball back, with one last chance to keep their victory hopes alive, a clipping call gave them a firstand-25. The Mules defense again sacked the quarterback, this time forcing a fumble, which was returned for a touchdown

Missouri Western followed this up by throwing an interception to cornerback Monteze Lattimore, which put the nail in the coffin for the Mules. The high scoring game ended with the Mules getting the victory by a score of 66-44. After the game, Head Coach Jim Svoboda and running back Devante Mays were very complimentary of the offensive line. And linebacker Austin Miller praised the team’s resilience when the game was on the line.

The Mules head to Emporia, Kansas to faceoff with Emporia State Hornets at 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 23, who have an identical record as the Mules at 2-1. This game will be their last before their big match up with defending National Champion Northwest Missouri State at Arrowhead Stadium.

School has been in session for just over a month now. This means thousands of students have finally returned to their usual back-to-school habits of Netflix binges, procrastination-induced sleepless nights, and a steady diet of Mountain Dew and the dining halls’ deep fried chicken sandwiches. Wow, it’s great to be a college student.

While this lifestyle sounds like the division II dream, being out of breath after climbing two flights of steps just isn’t ideal. Working out is always an option to stay in shape, but that sounds like a lot of work. So, let’s all be thankful that intramurals are back in full swing.

Student Activities assistant director, Kevin Sneed, says that intramurals are the perfect escape for everyone on campus, whether you are in the best shape of your life or if you are simply trying to get out of the dorms.

“We have competitive and recreational leagues,” Sneed said. “We try to offer something for everyone. So whether you’re a good athlete or a bad athlete, you should never be sitting in your dorm room. There’s always something to do.”

Flag football, sand volleyball, softball, tennis and archery are already underway, but sign ups are currently opening up for additional sports.

Basketball, swimming, dodge ball, sports trivia and rock climbing all start later this winter as well.

Registration for each sport can be found at imleagues.com. To register, create an account and search for UCM’s intramurals. There is a fee to enter a team into a league and prices vary from sport to sport.

According to Sneed, there is no reason to be skeptical about intramurals. He says it’s not merely an opportunity to play something you’re familiar with, but also an opportunity to explore something new.

“Don’t be scared to join,” Sneed said.

“Don’t be scared to play something. Just because you’ve never played soccer before, doesn’t mean you can’t join now. So just get involved.”

Champions of each league are awarded with intramural championship shirts, but Sneed says the real reward is enjoying competition with your friends.

“You don’t have to be athletic to participate. It’s not about winning or losing; it’s about being active and being with your friends and having fun.”
