Cap and gowns now available for distribution

For 49 years, the Children’s Literature Festival has brought children and their favorite authors and illustrators together.

The campus-wide festival is scheduled for March 18-20.

This year will be the 50th anniversary of the event at UCM. The festival will host several famous authors and their books from around the nation. Artists to be featured include Phil Bildner, J.B. Cheaney, Jack Gantos, Cheryl Harness and others, according to the festival website.

Children third through 10th grade are invited to attend, but anyone with an interest in children’s literature is invited to the festival.

Graduation candidates who wish to attend the commencement ceremonies can pick up their cap and gowns now.

Cap and gowns can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday at the University Store in The Crossing – South at Holden.

Trying on your gown is recommended prior to the ceremony in case an exchange is necessary.

United Student Housing Association and Spotlight to present laser tag The United Student Housing Association and The Spotlight are collaborating to bring a game of outdoor laser tag to campus.

The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 27 on the East Athletic Field between University Conference Center and Foster/Knox.

Free bike tune ups To get more students on two wheels, the Office of Sustainability is offering a complimentary program to tune student bicycles at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the Union Mall.

Co-organizer of the event Zach Long said the tune-up will consist of making sure students' bicycles are in working order and safe. For repairs that may not be made at the event, Long will provide advice.

Poet iCon to visit UCM Poet Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley represents those who are often marginalized and silenced.

Now, iCon is scheduled to come to UCM to perform many of her poems at 7 p.m. March 28 in Union 238. Event coordinator Casey Reed said iCon’s poetry will be covering a wide array of topics ranging from social justice issues to self-empowerment.

“They (students) will be able to experience one of the nation’s most wellknown, and accomplished poets as well as be exposed to thought provoking ideas,” said Reed.

With a budget proposal drawing UCM to offer first Big near, UCM staff braces for impact Data and Analytics

“I think we’re all wondering what our fate is going to be.”

That was a comment overheard from the gallery minutes before Tuesday’s Staff Council Meeting. It echoes what many university employees have wondered as the administration prepares to send the fiscal year 2019 budget to the board of governors.

Staff Council President Beth Rutt said the biggest source of frustration she’s heard from staff is the way information about the budget proposals, and what may happen as a result, is being disseminated amongst employees – delivered in waves and to pockets of employees. She also noted the frustration about the changes in the information after only a short time.

At the end of the meeting, a motion was approved to create an ad hoc committee to study amending current emeritus-status guidelines to extend emeriti benefits to employees who lose their positions at the university because of the budget restructuring.

The legislation now offers these benefits to employees who, at the approval of the board of governors, meet the conditions at the time of their retirement; the benefits are not currently available to employees whose employment does end voluntarily.

There is a section in the policy that states “special circumstances may warrant the board of governors granting emeritus status to others at its discretion,” which would allow consideration to be given to employees leaving in good standing without retiring.

At the onset of the meeting, Rutt urged those in attendance to attend the Staff Forum on Wednesday in Union 240. She said there would be

no repercussions for those who ask questions at the forum, but provided a way for staff to submit questions anonymously to be read and answered.

At the staff forum Wednesday, UCM President Chuck Ambrose and Executive Vice President and COO Roger Best presented information and answered questions posed by staff members.

Perhaps the most impactful part of the budget proposal is the estimated elimination of 30-50 filled positions.

Ambrose said there have been adjustments made to the university’s budget before, and many vacant positions have been eliminated to reduce expenditures. While the elimination of about 100 vacant positions is part of the proposal, it won’t be enough.

“We will not get through this without making some hard decisions,” Ambrose said. “We’ve done it for eight years, for the most part. We’ve made some select hard decisions, but we are out of the open position options.”

Ambrose said many of the positons affected will be mid-to-upper level faculty and staff positions.He said displaced employees will be given priority for future job openings.

Those in attendance were then invited to ask questions and anonymously submitted questions were read and addressed.

One question regarded whether salaries would be adjusted. Best said there would be a salary adjustment if a position is downgraded or if someone changes positions.

“For those positions where we have someone in a management-level position that we’re moving into a non-management level position, we will make changes to the salary,” he said. “That’s only fair to anyone else in a comparable position.”

“As we go into next year, there is

a likelihood that we’ll have people in different positions. We have some positions that are vacant that we need to have filled and other people who have the skillset to move into those positions. If you’re in a different position, there is a possibility you could have a different salary next year that is higher than what you have this year.”

One of the concerns brought up was the impact a job loss may have on an individual who had worked at the university for years. Now at the 50 or 60 age range, who may be tasked with re-entering the job market at the same time as 30-50 other people, further complicated by the positions eliminated by the Western Missouri Medical Center.

There were concerns raised about the perceived devaluation of office professionals, the evolving job description for office professionals and the inconsistent duties between individuals with the same job titles and what that would mean when positions are eliminated.

A couple of questions pertained to the amount of notice given to employees whose positions have been eliminated. As the academic and fiscal years come to a close, there is a growing concern that people will lose time to go out in search of new employment.

“I’m sorry for the angst,” Ambrose said. “This is the worst time, because I can’t tell you the decisions we’ll make and the impact they will have on individuals.”

Interim Provost-Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard said the board of governor’s meetings Thursday and Friday will be for discussing restructuring across campus.

The board of governors is scheduled to meet April 26-27 to approve the budget for fiscal year 2019, after which clearer and more definitive decisions will be made.

Starting fall 2018, the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies will be offering two new Bachelor of Science and Business Administration programs – big data and analytics. UCM will be the first school in the Midwest to offer these programs, which will train students to better collect, analyze and prepare information for businesses.

The new program will train students on using software tools and interpreting data in order to identify important business trends and apply them to decision making, according to the program proposal.

Kerry Henson, a professor in the computer information systems department, said the demand for people who can interpret the wealth of information they have is being recognized.

“Companies have realized that they have a tremendous amount of data, or at least have access to a tremendous amount of data. But what do they do with it? What can it tell them?” Henson said. “This focuses about trying to help organizations understand what they can know about what they have at hand.”

Real-world applications of this program include product market segmentation, finding candidates for jobs, determining accounting fraud and finding ways to make their business run more efficiently, according to the program proposal. Companies big and small, such as Target and Cerner, are beginning to look for people to collect and analyze the data.

Sam Ramanujan, a professor in the computer information systems department, feels there is not enough people in the field to meet the demand.

“This is where most organizations are going to put in their money. They want to make sure what data they’re capturing with what infrastructure they’ve got is put to full use,” said Ramanujan. “This will show them a real return on their investment.”

CHURCH PROTESTS UCM

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, picketed from 12 to 12:30 p.m Monday, March 12 at the intersection of Maguire and East Clark street.

The church came in part because of UCM's mascot, according to a news release from the WBC Chronicles.

"The University of Central Missouri sits a couple hours from WBC, in the middle of America, and their mascot is the mule/donkey/ass," the news release said. "God has used such a creature – when needed to get man’s attention – in delivering stark warnings about disobedience."

The church said they hoped the donkeys at UCM would come out and join in the earnest warnings to obey god, according to the news release.

"Surely this nation, and especially Missouri, are in dire need of– and are stubbornly resisting – such warnings," the news release said.

"From the filthy, faithless, adulterous, idolatrous, arrogant Governor Eric Greitens on, our Missouri neighbors need to be warned to forsake ruinous fornication, adultery, homosexuality, idolatry and wholesale lying to your children/each other."

About 50 people, including UCM students, attended the protest.

The Campus Eye app has been at UCM for about five years as an evolution from Textcaster. The app allows students to send messages and photos directly to Public Safety to report crimes or facility issues.

Ron Coleman, dispatcher at Public Safety, said there were 126 reports last year via the app.

He said 60 percent of those were facility related: 30 reports fell under the Warrensburg Police

Department’s jurisdiction and about 20 of them being more urgent police responses.

Captain Bill Brinkley, assistant director of Public Safety, said University Relations has promoted the app and pushed it out on social media. He said some students get the information about the app, but won’t download it onto their smartphones. He said he encourages students to utilize the app.

Air Force announces B-2 replacement The Air Force expects the B-21 Raiders to see action as soon as the mid2020s, according to a news release.

When a fleet of B-2 Spirit bombers arrived in Knob Noster, Missouri, Dec. 17, 1993, life at Whiteman Air Foce Base changed substantially. Life may be changing again at Whiteman AFB as a new generation of bombers was recently announced.

Whiteman is the only operational base for the iconic B-2 bombers, which boast a range of 6,000 miles; a payload of over 40,000 pounds; and a maximum flying altitude of 50,000 feet. Northrup-Grumman, an aerospace manufacturer who manufactured the B-2, has a public fact sheet that states the bomber was produced between 1988 and 1997. Therefore, many feel that the B-2 – as well as the nation’s entire bomber fleet – is long overdue for an upgrade.

“After several decades of relative neglect, the Air Force’s bomber fleet is now the smallest and oldest it has ever been,” U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., said in a news release. “Overall, our bombers have an average age of 39 years – older than most of their pilots.”

In an effort to modernize, the Air Force has announced a next-generation bomber: the B-21 Raider. The B-21, also produced

by Northrup-Grumman, is expected to be a long-range strike bomber that will serve an essential role in air defense.

“It is a must-have capability,” said Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh in a news release.

The new bomber is planned to replace the B-52 Stratofortess, which was produced between 1952 and 1962, as well as the B-1B Lancer from 1985. As more B-21 bombers are produced, the B-1 and B-2 bombers will be retired incrementally, according to Northrup-Grumman.

Northrup-Grumman claims a production and deployment schedule is currently classified. However, the Air Force expects B-21 Raiders will see action as soon as

the mid-2020s, according to the release.

Lieutenant Allen Palmer, a public affairs representative at Whiteman AFB, stated that basing decisions are ongoing and will be announced once a decision has been reached. Palmer added that they expect little impact to basing, as evidenced by a quote from Heather Wilson,

Secretary of the Air Force.

“If the force structure we have proposed is supported by Congress, bases that have bombers now will have bombers in the future,” said Wilson in a news release for an outlined request for the bomber fleet for the Fiscal Year 2019 President’s Budget Plan.

ALUMNUS INTERNS AS CINEMATOGRAPHER FOR INTERNATIONAL FILM

A 2017 UCM graduate spent a month in Nicaragua interning on an international documentary titled “El Libro Volador.”

Matthew Butler, a former digital media production student, applied for an internship with Actuality Media to be part of the documentary as the film’s cinematographer.

Cinematography in its simplest form is the craft or profession of making a film.

“Cinematography is the art of making a movie,” Butler said. “It is the main function behind the art of visualization and how the film connects to the viewers.”

“El Libro Volador” translated means “The Magic Book.” The film is a documentary about a traveling bus filled with books for children. The bus moved across the countryside providing those in need with reading material.

Butler stayed in Nicaragua filming from July 8 to August 11.

“We were working out of a hostel where I would go to and from when I went out to do photography work. This photography was our research prior to filming,” he said.

Butler was able to describe what the

role of cinematographer meant in regards to this film.

“I was the director of photography,” Butler said. “That was my main role to the film. I would work with the director on how to create good visuals in the one month we were down in Nicaragua.”

Butler also worked as a scout during preproduction for the film and was responsible for finding the next location for filming.

“I always worked closely with the film’s director when it came to location scouting,” Butler said. “Every time that I went out to a new place, the director would come along. We would scout the locations together and bounce ideas off one another in the process.”

Throughout the month spent on location, Butler gained valuable experience and skills that will benefit him in his future career.

“I was able to learn that filmmaking is about researching your subjects thoroughly and in depth,” Butler said. “This was definitely something that I learned a lot about while on location with this film. I also learned that this industry is always quick-paced and that in the future I need to set up my shot lists way ahead of time.”

“Matt created a list of shooting locations and specific shots that he wanted to capture to tell the story of El Libro,” she said. “I encouraged Matt to think critically about his shots, to think about what they would contribute to the overall story of the film, and if they were truly necessary. He was happy to have feedback and was always working to continue to refine and develop his skills as a filmmaker.”

Butler said working on a film for over a month in a completely new environment gave him a whole new perspective on his future in cinematography.

“I gained a sense of my own cinematography style and the process behind filmmaking,” Butler said.

Butler said he took an interesting path, starting off in college then transferring to UCM from Missouri State in order to find himself where he is today.

“I originally wanted to be an English major and make my way into film in that manner. I particularly enjoyed how film affects people,” he said.

UCM DMP professor Mark von Schlemmer was Butler’s instructor for an editing and broadcasting class.

“I had him in my editing class and then in the documentary class as well, which was an area he was especially interested

in,” von Schlemmer said.

Von Schlemmer advised Butler in earning the opportunity to intern with the company.

“I was assigned a news package in one of my intro courses within the department,” Butler said. “I produced this story over my friend and everything took off from there. The courses at UCM gave me the basic skills to learn the most I could from my internship experience.”

Dolan said Butler was a pleasure to work with because of his enthusiasm and positive attitude.

“He genuinely cared about collaborating to create something great,” Dolan said. “I think overall, Matt learned about making films in challenging locations, working with a wide range of teammates and subjects, and strengthening his own understanding of the documentary filmmaking process.”

Now with his work on the film “El Libro Volador” in his back pocket, Butler said he is ready to pursue his next project.

“I am working now to start my own media production business,” Butler said.

“I am very much enjoying what I am working on now and I am continuing to become the best storyteller that I can be.”

“El Libro Volador” released in September 2017 and can be viewed on Actuality Media’s YouTube or Vimeo pages under the film’s title.

Three Billboards: good, but not Best Picture

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was nominated for Best Picture this year and while it didn’t win, it did take home several other awards at the Oscars. Is “Three Billboards” truly as great as people say it is? After all, the Academy has made plenty of mistakes before…

In the small town of Ebbing, Missouri, a tough, blue-collar mother, Mildred Hayes, played by Frances McDormad, is mourning the loss of her daughter who was raped nand murdered. Angered that her daughter’s case hasn’t been solved after seven months, she buys three billboards. Using them as advertisement, she publicly calls out Ebbing chief of police Bill Willoughy, played by Woody Harrelson, for not finding the killer. What follows is a chain reaction leading to a series of chaotic events.

First off, Three Billboards contains some great acting. Frances McDormad won an Oscar for her performance. I may not like the Oscars that much, but I’ll admit, I can understand why she won that award. Her character feels realistic. Besides being grief-stricken, I feel like I’ve meet women like Mildred before.

Co-star Sam Rockwell also received an Oscar, his was for Best Supporting Actor. He plays another main character, a violent and racist deputy named Jason Dixon. At first, I was annoyed by his character because he felt like every bigot rolled into one, but as the story unfolds Dixon does become humanized.

In addition, Rockwell’s acting is really good. So it’s also understandable that he won his award, even though some argue he’s delivered better performances before and never won an Oscar for them, like in “Moon” or “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” This was actually the first time he was even nominated for an Oscar at all.

In addition, the rest of the cast delivered good performances, Woody Harrelson included. Even though

their dialogue isn’t the best, they still deliver it well.

There are a few characters that only appear for a brief time. In the beginning, one might think a few people that appear will play big roles in the story later on. In reality, some of them are only in maybe three or four scenes. Instead, the Three Billboards story rather focuses on the three main characters, which does make sense.

This movie is very well shot. The scenery of endless trees covering the horizon is beautiful.

The camera movement is good during the more emotional scenes and the more violent scenes, which can overlap. The film crew really earned their pay making this movie.

The dialogue did feel natural, but not all of the time. I’m fine with characters constantly saying the F word, but not if it seems forced. There are better ways to add drama than by yelling curse words.

Some of the events that happen in the story almost seemed over-the-top. The events didn’t seem like they could really happen, and if they did happen, they would cause much more severe consequences.

It’s worth noting that though Three Billboards may have comedic moments, the majority of the film is a serious drama. Despite having scenes of violence and destruction, Three Billboards does have a few heartfelt moments to help with the balance. Most of these moments appear unexpectedly; then there are a few scenes of genuine tension between the actors – both carry such an emotional impact.

Now how does “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” portray Missouri? To be honest, it kind of portrayed Missouri as just being a part

of the South. The Ebbing residents have accents and act like bigots. This may be true in certain regions, but not all. On the upside, the landscape does resemble certain parts of the state. When I think about it, we should still be grateful that this movie takes place in Missouri though. How many movies are set here ,anyway?

One last thing I would like to mention is the relationships in Three Billboards. My favorite part of this movie was the relationships between the characters. There are several people in this film that hate each other, but in a way, they also respect each other.

Seeing these complicated people interact with other complicated people was very interesting to watch.

These relationships help lead to some satisfying character development.

Overall, Three Billboards is a really good movie.

I was bothered by some aspects, but I did enjoy it.

However, I wouldn’t say it’s the greatest film from last year. I won’t overhype this film because this movie was overhyped for me. Before watching it, I almost expected to see a masterpiece. In truth, it wasn’t that good. While I would recommend this movie to people who like dramas, I also recommend watching it with lower expectations.

Three Billboards was actually filmed in Sylva, North Carolina, and not in Missouri. It’s shouldn’t be a big surprise though, because most movies are not filmed on location. Now we know what the people of New York City and Los Angeles feel on a regular basis.

To make matters more interesting, Eric Newsom, a professor of Digital Media Production, lived in Sylva for a number of years. He hasn’t seen “Three Billboards” yet, but when he does, he will be watching for all of his friends in Sylva, who play extras in the film.

Ambrose speaks on reorganization of colleges

by LEAH KEMPLE / News Editor As state lawmakers are trying to restore the $68 million in cuts to higher education proposed

by Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, university administrators are working on a reorganization plan.

President Chuck Ambrose said the state Legislature wants to put $38 million back into the core of appropriations for higher education. He said House Budget Committee Chairman Scott Fitzpatrick wants to put $30 million into Access Missouri, a need-based scholarship program, and will release it back to the university’s core if they hold tuition flat.

“The reality is, we don’t have the House and the Senate together as they pass a budget,” Ambrose said. “There is absolutely no telling what Gov. Greitens will do to us once that bill goes to his desk.”

Ambrose presented the options for organizing UCM’s four colleges into three to the Faculty Senate Wednesday afternoon. Ambrose said he and Interim Provost-Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard discussed negotiating with Fitzpatrick to allow tuition increases.

“We may have an opportunity to restore the $68 million, which is our highest priority,” Ambrose said. “We may have an opportunity to increase tuition one percent if we compromise with the House budget chair.”

He also said any resolution is likely to be painful.

“My other option in terms of directing the provost, would be to go to program review and elimination and most likely, because of just the dire straits of resources, that would probably require us to do some dramatic things like suspend funding promotion to offset the savings that we can’t provide by consolidating schools and colleges,” Ambrose said.

“

Our middle managers – deans and chairs – are going to be doing more work for the same amount of money,” Chenault said. “From a faculty perspective, your checks have an extra zero on them than ours do, and so that’s a spot (from where to cut) from our perspective. The morale is not great. Is there any discussion about pay cuts for upper administration?

”

Ambrose said he believes the situation will even itself out.

“When all the decisions are made and the cuts are made, I believe you’ll see that it will be proportionate,” he said. “I appreciate you asking because this is my 20th year being the highest compensated individual at the place I work, which is never really a comfortable place to be.”

Ambrose said he knows the situation is difficult and he understands the frustration shown during the Faculty Senate meeting.

“I know change isn’t easy, and I know we’ve asserted a lot of change, and it’s perpetual,” he said.

Ambrose also said he’s optimistic for the plan the administration has crafted.

“We’re close to presenting perhaps the very best operating budget on operating integrity that we’ve done in a long time,” Ambrose said. “We will have what will be a good platform to work from, and to me, that’s optimism.”

The administration is making changes to the structure of programs after seeing the possibility of more budget cuts in the future.

Interim Provost-Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard spoke to Faculty Senate about a working plan the administration has to restructure the colleges. This would result in going from four colleges to three – dissolving the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and distributing the programs to the other colleges.

“The initial step with this was working with each of the academic deans, coming up with clustering that were

based on a couple of factors that I asked for them to consider,” Godard said.

He said the factors included looking at the broader majors such as science, business, education, health services and others. They looked at where students migrate when they decide to change majors. They also sought similarities in earlier courses between classes.

“With those, the deans kind of came up and looked at renditions, and we all kind of spun through it, and then all of your chairs were involved in that process,” Godard said.

David Ewing, faculty senator from the College of Health, Science and Technology, asked Godard about faculty input throughout the process.

“I regret to inform you that as of June 1st, The Honors College will be forced to close its doors due to our university’s budget cuts,” the email said. “We know that some sort of honors program will be implemented, but what it entails has yet to be released.”

That email was sent by psychology major Hailey Politte, the public relations chair for the Honors College Student Association. She said she sent the email after the dean of the Honors College met with the HCSA executive board and gave them insight on what was happening.

“I know that there was a lack of informing,” Politte said. “There’s a lot of students who did not know what was going on and it took emails to truly get the word out.”

In the email, Politte urged students to start a letter-writing campaign to voice

their opinions and fight for the Honors College.

Interim Provost-Chief Learning Officer Mike Godard said the Honors College is not closing during a meeting with the Psychology Club Tuesday evening.

“I’ve seen a little bit on social media, and then I’ve seen a little bit in terms of some of the letters that you all have put together, and that’s regarding our Honors College,” Godard said at the meeting.

Godard said the Honors College might move to a different area but did not say where. He said the restructured program will be a more robust experience for students.

“We want to enhance the experiences that our students are having, not diminish those experiences,” Godard

Godard said the next step in the process includes getting feedback from faculty.

“At this point, what I’ve asked from the deans and the chairs is that they get more input and feedback from faculty so that we can make sure we aren’t missing anything,” he said. “Nothing is going to be perfect in terms of the reorganization, and not everyone is going to feel like they are perfectly placed in terms of their program.”

Faculty Senate Vice President Steve Price said when he first saw the document that listed majors clustered into their new potential colleges, it was presented in a way that seemed final.

This is still a work in progress. That’s why they’re not clustered in schools already.

That’s why they’re alphabetical,” Godard said. “It’s because we’re not trying to influence individuals as we look for additional feedback as we move through this process.

He said April is a critical month in the process and the administration would

like to have decisions made by then so they aren’t made over the summer while faculty is gone.

“It’s really important that we get out a final document within the next couple of weeks,” Godard said.

David Babcock, faculty senator of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said it seemed like the college he represents is going to disband and be dispersed, and other than that, he didn’t see a change in the colleges.

Godard said that CAHSS will not have a dean after this fiscal year.

“We are looking at what we have in terms of leadership currently and where we’re at in terms of redesigning things so that they make sense, but we have got direct feedback,” he said. “Mike

Sekelsky (interim dean of CAHSS) has been a huge part of us looking to see what makes sense.”

Price asked Godard if the administration plans on visiting with each department to make sure the changes are working.

“Faculty are having a knee-jerk reaction to this document, as you can imagine, and I have actually said, ‘How do you know it’s not going to work?’”

Price said.

In response, Godard said he looks forward to that feedback.

“We want what’s best for our students, and I know that’s what all of you want,” Godard said. “What we want to make sure of is that the program’s integrity is maintained.”

Godard said the Honors College curriculum requirements will not change and will remain consistent so as to not be disruptive to students.

He also addressed concerns about the rumored demise of the study abroad program at UCM. “We are absolutely going to still have study abroad experiences for our students as we move forward,” Godard said.

“Again, how we are going to structure that and serve our students might be in a slightly different area, but we are going to do it in a manner in which we think it’s going to provide the most efficiencies and resources and services that are going to best serve our students.”

Godard said study abroad will be aligned under the Office of Extended Studies.

He also addressed questions about the realignment of academic colleges, specifically how the psychology department might be affected.

“I just left a meeting with all of the academic chairs on campus – and that’s called our Academic Council – along with all the deans, and I actually presented to that group what a rough draft outline might look like in terms of the restructuring, and in that rough draft outline we do have psychological sciences remaining in a STEM area,” Godard said. “And what is that college going to be called? I’d love to be able to tell you that, but it is (still) in the sciences, OK, which is what I’m hearing from you all was important.”

He said the university is working to realign its student success services to have less duplication across campus and more holistic care for students as they move through their degree programs.

He said they are not talking about cutting academic programs.

“We go through a comprehensive review of our academic programs as per

state regulations periodically to ensure that they’re viable and they’re doing what they say they’re going to do in terms of preparing our students for jobs in the workforce – that happens all the time,” Godard said.

“

There are no cuts to academic programs that are happening based upon any budgetary concerns, that’s a whole other process that happens, and again that happens regardless of where we’re at budgetarily.

”

David Kreiner, the department chair of psychology, said a lot is still unknown about the reorganization and cuts.

“But what we do know is that we’re moving toward, in the reorganization, having a different college structure, fewer colleges and then departments being combined into larger schools,” Kreiner said. “So how will that affect psychological science? We will very likely be part of a school as opposed to a department that is just psychological science.”

Kreiner said it’s still not clear how exactly the psychology department is going to be combined.

“I would just say it’s a really complicated situation, and I think students are probably becoming more aware of how complicated it is,” Kreiner said. “I think it’s a real positive that our students reached out to talk to the administration and to try to get some answers about it, but I think everybody’s going to have to understand that it’s an uncomfortable situation and when there’s that big of a hit to the university budget, it’s going to affect us all in some way and it’s going to be uncomfortable.”

Godard said he wanted students to hear from him that there’s not going to be a diminishing of services to students as a result of the changes.

“Even though we have budget situations that we are dealing with, you are our priority,” he said. “That’s why we’re here. We are all here as faculty, as administrators, to make sure that we support you, to make sure that you’re successful.”

I’ve been on a social media detox. What started as a fun bet with a friend turned into a life-changing experience.

This has been a really big change and pretty eye-opening. It’s calmed my mind and helped relieve anxiety, and since I started this a few weeks ago, I haven’t had a single suicidal thought cross my mind. Don't get me wrong, I'm alright and I never acted upon any of those thoughts.

They were just there, looming in the back of my mind.

But now, being on this social media detox, I haven't had any of those reoccurring thoughts. Sure, I still feel stress here and there due to homework and school, but it's been significantly better over the course of this detox. I feel less depressed, less anxious, I don't feel inadequate and my mind is more clear.

My addiction to social media happened completely by mistake and slowly over time. I had been dealing with a phenomenon known as “Facebook depression.”

Phys.org’s article, “The secret history of Facebook Depression,” states connecting with every single person you know can make you feel inadequate. People’s lives on social media are often only the good parts, creating a fabricated reality for comparison. I think that caused me to conjure up suicidal feelings, because “Facebook Depression” had me believe my life was not worth living.

Every time I looked on social media, Facebook or Instagram especially, I always felt that my life was basically worthless – even though I know that’s not true. To feel better, I’d go on social media again, creating a perpetual cycle. It felt like I was sinking into a black hole of social media. It took me a long time to climb out, but a voice deep inside me trying to escape got me out.

The main issue for me was that anytime I felt a negative emotion, I’d rely on social media instead of actually figuring out how to fix my problems. Social media

was like my crappy therapist who didn’t play games, but I didn’t have a phone to know how to talk to people at all or help distract myself with and take away my creativity. anybody but I thought was helping me.

I deal with less drama: There’s always unnecessary drama on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook. Now I don’t have to be stressed over it because I don’t see it at all. Out of sight, out of mind.

I experience less depression: Like I mentioned before, my mind has been cleared and I feel less anxious without having to rely on social media. I strongly believe social media was a huge factor in making me feel like crap. I didn’t think it was solely because of social media, though. I thought it was just because I was dealing with a lot in college and was being under a lot of stress. I never realized how much social media had an impact on those thoughts and feelings until detoxing.

I’m doing more meaningful things: Since this detox, I have time for my hobbies and more meaningful reading. I think social media can preoccupy people from doing what they love or what they need to do. Overall, I really feel more productive.

I feel more like a human: I know this sounds weird, but I no longer feel like a person trapped in a prison of social media. There is no escape unless you do it for yourself. I dug my way out with a plastic spoon and saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

I really suggest everyone try and break away from social media just for one week.

Delete all of the apps off your phone and all of the bookmarks on your laptop. Just try it for a week. Honestly it wasn’t as hard as I expected. I really think it could benefit everyone in many different ways.

For me, I’m doing this social media detox for three months to fully experience the effects and get my mind back in good health. After that, I want to limit the social media time in my life and still focus on the real world.

A Review: 'Our Town'

the greatest set that was never there

The Department of Theatre and Dance preformed a production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” last week at the Highlander Theatre.

The play was specially chosen to honor professor and theatre director Richard Herman. This was his last production before retiring in May after 31 years of working at UCM. Alongside “Death of a Salesman” or “The Streetcar Named Desire,” “Our Town” is considered to be one of the greatest American plays of all time. Set in the small, simple town of Grover’s Cor-

ner, New Hampshire, the story follows the lives of several residents from their childhood into adulthood. The play is set in three acts: daily life; love and marriage; followed, of course, by death and eternity.

The fourth wall, a term originating in theatre – transcending into film and television – means there is an invisible wall between the characters and the audience.

A fourth-wall break is when the characters directly address the audience. Fourthwall breaks are featured throughout “Our Town.” In fact, the main character is the Stage Manager, who guides the audience through the world of Grover’s Corners – he’s not the real stage manager, of course.

Often, he will talk directly to the audience, bringing in guest speakers and even

playing other characters.

The play intentionally uses props from previous Herman productions, besides a few door frames and chairs, the stage is almost empty. The buildings of Grover’s Corners are imaginary. The original script requires no curtain, set, scenery and minimal use of props, according to one of the original copies. This may seem like a bizarre premise, but after watching the play for a while you fully accept the concept.

Honestly, I can’t picture Grover’s Corners with real buildings.

Now why is “Our Town” like this, you may ask? Well, it’s because Wilder wanted to create a more personal viewing experience for the theatre-goer. Wilder said “Our claim, our hope, our despair are in the mind – not in things, not in scenery,” according to GoTeensWriters. com. Fourth-wall breaks are usually done for comedic effect, and while there are a few fourth-wall breaks meant as jokes, in “Our Town,” it’s mainly done to create a serious experience.

The idea of destroying the boundary between the fictional characters and the audience isn’t that uncommon. The film “Dogville” has a similar premise, although “Our Town” came out 60 years earlier.

First published in 1938, and taking place in 1901 to 1913, “Our Town” is a little dated. That doesn’t mean it’s not relatable. Many of the themes of the play are timeless, the play handles themes about small town life, and life in general, in such a universal way. That’s why “Our Town” is still popular. It has also experienced international success, because people in different countries can relate to its subject matter. After all, “Our Town” could take place in any town.

The acting in this production was good.

Especially, considering the limitations the play places on the performers. Because the script requires minimal use of props, the actors would often use invisible objects, whether they were gardening tools

or a whole cow.

“Our Town” also has some limitations on their acting. Thornton Wilder said he wanted his play performed “without sentimentality or ponderousness – simply, dryly and sincerely,” according to Broadwayworld.com. Basically, the actors had to fight their instincts to add mannerisms to their roles.

In my personal interpretation of the play, I felt the occasional dull conversation was intentional. Think about it, how exciting are the conversations you usually have in your daily life?

Despite the play beginning with comedy, about halfway through the second half, “Our Town” becomes very serious.

To be fair, that is something the Stage Manager tells you directly. For further warning, this play might make you cry.

The overall message of the play is that life shouldn’t be wasted. It sounds like a preachy message that you’ve heard a hundred times before, but trust me, the play handles this message in a very thoughtful way.

I really liked how each act began and ended. Picture it: as everyone sits down and the lights go out; the big, service door at the back of the stage begins to rise. As its being raised, the cast and crew stand silently. Then they walk out onto the dimly lit stage and set up for the act – putting the slow astronaut walk from “Armageddon” to shame in the process. When the act was over, the cast would do the same but in reverse. Granted, this kind of entering and exiting is part of the script. Still, I wish all plays started and ended with such ostentation.

“Our Town” is a great play and the theatre department did a great job of bringing it to life. It was one of the most unique viewing experiences I’ve had so far, and I hope I’ll see more plays like it. “Our Town” is both a lasting production and send off of theater director Richard Herman.

Mules track and field adds another All-American Both the Mules and Jennies competing at the 2018 Indoor National Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas over the weekend. Three UCM athletes earned All-American honors for their performances during the event.

Senior Jace Kaleikau had a record-setting day in the weight throw. His 65-6.75 throw earned him seventh place and

All-American honors. Kaleikau’s throw moved him to third on UCM’s all-time record list.

Sophomore Hannah VanBuskirk finished fifth in the high jump with a personal best of 5-8.5 to earn All-American honors.

On the final day, freshman Jesse Miller finished fourth in the high jump clearing

the bar at 6-11 to tie his personal best.

The mark earned Miller his first-ever All-American award.

The Mules finished in 26th place while the Jennies came in 43rd place in the final event of the indoor track and field season.

Outdoor competition will begin on March 21 at the Wichita State Heptathlon/Decathlon.

Reaves and Lowrance named Academic All-Americans Mules basketball had two players earn Academic All-American honors this season, awarded by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Both senior guard Spencer Reaves and junior center Jakob Lowrance, earned Second Team honors.

For Reaves, this is his second season as an Academic All-American in three

seasons at UCM. Reaves is a physical education major that achieved a 3.9 GPA while leading the Mules with 17 points per game and shooting 52 percent from the field. Both totals were top-10 in the MIAA. Reaves finished his career at UCM at seventh on the all-time Mules scoring list.

Lowrance earned his first Academic

All-American while having his best season as a Mule. He averaged a career-high 14.3 points per game and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. His 58 percent shooting was good for second highest in the conference. His performance this season earned him Third-Team All MIAA honors all while he held down a 3.96 GPA as a sports management major.

Bowling stops at Vanderbilt before post-season Jennies bowling will head to Smyrna, Tennessee, for the Vanderbilt Music City Classic March 16-18. The competition will be the final of the regular season for the Jens before the MIAA Champion-

ships in Wheaton, Illinois, and the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

The Jens come into the competition with impressive finishes over their last couple of matches. A second-place finish

at the UCM/Lincoln Women’s Invitational and fourth place at the Nebraska Big Red Invitational has the Jennies in a good position heading toward the postseason.

Jennies split series to open conference play Jennies softball followed their sweep of Rockhurst in the home opener with a series split against Southwest Baptist last Friday. After losing game one 6-1, the Jens scored eight runs on seven hits and

shut out the Bearcats 8-0 in the second game. The Jennies' overall record is 7-13 and 1-1 in MIAA play.

The Jennies will head to St. Joseph for the Missouri Western Regional Cross-

over held March 16-18 where they will play six games over three days. Their first matchup will be with the Augustana Vikings, the game is scheduled to be played Friday at noon.

Mules baseball tops Rockhurst and move up in national rankings

Central Missouri baseball is on a seven-game winning streak after their last game of their eight-game on the road. The team now sits at number five in the Division II national rankings.

The Mules had no problem putting up double-digit runs as they totaled a dozen in their 12-4 victory over the Rockhurst Hawks on Tuesday night at Loyola Park.

Mules offense tallied a season-high of 22 hits.

It was a great start to the game as the Mules offense put up runs early on the board as outfielder Travis Able brought in the first two runs and gave the Mules the lead, 2-0. After just one inning, the Hawks found themselves down 4-0 to the Mules after a two-run homer by Mules infielder Collin Nevil.

On the defensive side, the Mules held their opponents in the last four games to only single-digit runs while averaging at least 10 runs a game, for the fourth game in a row.

Pitcher Luke Lucas got the start on the mound for UCM and was solid all afternoon, pitching a complete game. His start to the game forced three consecutive outs in the first inning that pushed the Mules forward with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Rockhurst got its first run in the bottom of the second after a single by Jeremy Lufft and back-to-back UCM errors helping them score. The Hawks then added two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Mules lead to 5-3.

Central's final three runs came in the eighth inning. Nevil got on base from a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a single from Justin Graff-Rowe. After a Rockhurst pitching change, a missed ball help Nevil Score and get Graff-Rowe to

third.

Lucas ended the game at the mound, only allowing two hits in the last two innings.

With this victory, the Mules finished their road trip 7-1, pushing them to five from the number seven spot in the Division-II national rankings.

Central Missouri now holds a record of 17-3 for the season winning 14 of their last 15 games, with a 9-0 record at home since going 1-2 at the Houston Invitational in neutral games.

Two week ago, the Mules had entered the national rankings at the 17th spot before moving up 10 spots in this past week’s rankings. This being a significant turnaround for the Mules whom were in the preseason poll before they fell out entirely and eventually did not receive any votes into week one of the national ranking polls.

The baseball team’s next game will be against the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

In their last meeting, the Mules took the series 2-1 after winning in the last game of their three-game series. It was backand-forth as Pittsburg State gave Central Missouri a hard time splitting wins in the first two games between the two teams.

Pittsburg State is now 15-6 on the season and 7-2 when it comes to MIAA conference play. This will be the first and only meeting of the season between Central Missouri and Pittsburg State, with the Gorillas 3-3 road play.

The three-game series will begin with a doubleheader set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, and a single for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.

Guard Paige Redmond was her usual self and then some scoring 22 on five made triples. She added seven rebounds and three assists to her already impressive stat line. Redmond was named the Tournament MVP and All-Central Region First Team.

Skaggs and forward Kayonna Lee led the Jens with nine rebounds apiece.

The Jens dismantled the Vikings fullcourt press that averages 20 turnovers a game only committing 11. Central Missouri held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Vikings' 45-29.

The Jennies will return to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, next week to compete against the other regional champions in the Elite Eight. The Jens first opponent will be Lubbock Christian University out of Lubbock, Texas. The Lady Chaps are 31-1 with their only loss belonging to a top-seeded Ashland team that hasn’t lost a regular season game since 2016. That loss came in November, but hasn’t prevented the Lady Chaps from winning 25 straight since.

“We haven’t looked at them specifically, but their only loss being Ashland says a lot about them,” Skaggs said. “We’re not going to come into this game scared.”

The Jennies are scheduled to meet the Lady Chaps at 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

POLICE BEAT Juliann Finn, 23, was arrested at 7:00 p.m. March 3 in the 1200 block of Vest Drive on suspicion of failing to obey an officer and indecent exposure. Finn was reported to be yelling in the street while nude before kicking a witness. Finn was transported to WMMC for a mental health evaluation.

Items were reported stolen from a vehicle March 3 on Pebble Creek Drive.

Meleah White, 19, and Kari Schumacher, 19, were arrested at 12:00 p.m. March 4 on Southwest Drive on suspicion of public affray.

A workplace threat was reported at 11:27 a.m. March 5 in the 200 block of North Devasher Street.

Property was reported damaged at 4:01 p.m. March 5 in the 1400 block of East Hale Lake Road.

Identity theft was reported March 5 in the 500 block of Anderson Street.

Larceny was reported at 6:10 a.m.

March 6 in the 300 block of East Cooper Boulevard.

An individual reported property damage and harassment at 1:09 p.m. March 6 in the 900 block of East Market Street.

Two subjects paid with counterfeit $20 bills, which were reported on March 7 in the 300 block of East Young Street. Both subjects paid for their meal with real money after being told that the bills were counterfeit.

Kevin Demoss, 20, was arrested at 2:13 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. March 7 in the 600 block of West Clark Street on suspicion

of trespassing.

Tabatha Beebe, 33, was arrested at 5:04 a.m. March 8 on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance other than marijuana and active warrants.

A theft at a residence was reported at 1:48 p.m. March 9 in the 1600 block of Amhearst Plaza.

Threats were reported at 2:05 p.m.

March 9 in the 600 block of East Young Street.

A trespasser was reported at 3:56 p.m.

March 9 in the 300 block of East Cooper Boulevard.

An individual reported that items were stolen from their vehicle at 8:45 a.m.

March 10 in the 500 block of Swallow Street.

Kevin Allard, 44, was arrested at 11:07 a.m. March 12 in the 200 block of West Culton Street on suspicion of shoplifting.

Michael Moeller, 19, was arrested at 9:52 p.m. March 12 in the 500 block of North Maguire Street on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia, driving without insurance, and driving without headlights.

Holly Hargrove, 19, was arrested at 12:13 a.m. March 13 at South Maguire and Clark Streets on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia.
