The Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit, Mssouri was recently named one of 10 finalists in the “Learn

by Design” competition – scheduled for March 5-8 – at the South by Southwest Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas.

During the conference, officials from MIC and DLR Group Architects, who designed the building, will present a story behind the design of the building and how it enhances learning in the facility.

The campus was constructed in 2015 after a no-tax-increase bond issue was passed, according to a UCM news release; developing a partnership between UCM and the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. MIC houses Lee’s Summit’s “Summit Technology Academy”, as well as various graduate and undergraduate programs offered by UCM. The school recently opened Sept. 5.

Josh Rivedal to teach students to “Live Mentally Well and Crush It in College” Josh Rivedal, actor, comedian and author, is scheduled to come to UCM to teach students how to improve their mental health at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in Hendricks Hall. According to the Office of Student Activities news release, Rivedal will be assisting students in learning how to improve their mental health by discussing his personal experiences as a survivor of loss, abuse and attempted suicide.

Students’ nominations for academic advisor sought after The Office of Student Experience and Engagement is currently looking for nominations for inspiring academic advisors who have made a difference in students’ lives.

Nominating an advisor can be done by completing the online form. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 21. The award will be presented to the academic advisor later this spring. Any questions can be directed to Kristin Salas at salas@ucmo.edu.

Africana Studies hosting “Marshall” movie event A discussion about the life and legacy of Thurgood Marshall will take place between 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Union atrium. Free showings of the movie “Marshall” will follow the event at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the Union Cinema, and at 4:30, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Art and Design Department book wsigning planned The Department of Art and Design is celebrating the publication of a book which details the history of their department at the University of Central Missouri. The event is planned for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Art Center on 217 East Clark Street.

Rich Monson, a professor emeritus in the art and design department, wrote the book to discuss the long history of the department which dates back to 1871.

The book signing will feature a reception, book sale and signing by Monson.

Other art and design emeriti faculty will be present to sign copies. Monson wrote the book with the help of other art and design emeriti, according to the UCM event press release.

Proceeds from book sales will go fund an endowed scholarship for art and design majors.

Members of the public are invited to attend.

First Generation panel to foster enrichment

The Academic Enrichment Department and the UCM Advantage Program are hosting the second annual First Generation Panel from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 in the Elliott Student Union Room 235.

Carmen Binder, the learning specialist

with the UCM Advantage Program, said the panel includes UCM students, staff and other faculty members that have gone through school as first generation students.

“The panelists will be sharing their experiences. Some of our panelists completed their undergraduate work at UCM, so the resources will be relevant to all UCM first gen students,” Binder said.

She also said that in addition to sharing

their first-generation college student experience, these individuals will also be giving valuable advice along the way.

The Academic Enrichment department supports students to reach personal, academic and career goals. Their services include free tutoring, writing support and supplemental instruction.

“We want students to know they are supported and we are invested in their suc-

cess,” Binder said.

The department will also be hosting The First Generation Career Summit April 16.

The goal of this event is to help prepare first generation students for after college by discussing topics such as job searching, resumes and professional dress.

Faculty Senate seeks new president in upcoming months

UCM Faculty Senate will elect a new president and possibly a new face in the position this spring.

Katie Jacobs, an assistant professor in psychological sciences, has been Faculty Senate president for two years and has served the organization for a total of five years. Her term as a senator ends in the spring of 2019.

“My goal right now is to try to help build the Senate so it can sustain when I leave,” Jacobs said. “I’ve been in leadership for so long and it’s never good for an organization to be dependent on an individual, so I’m trying to build the capacity of the system so whoever takes over after me has a really easy transition.”

Faculty senators are elected to twoyear terms and can serve two terms for

a total of four years. After those two terms are up, the member has to wait a full academic year before they can run again.

A possible candidate for the position is Vice President Steve Price, associate professor in communication.

“My vice president is fantastic,” Jacobs said. “I’m trying to get him to run next year as president. That way we can get someone new in the vice president role and orient them for leadership.”

Price said he’s considering running for the president role. He said serving on Faculty Senate is a big responsibility as a voice for the faculty to the administration.

“It’s a lot of work, so if I decide not to run, it’s because I want to focus my energy and efforts elsewhere,” Price said.

According to the Faculty Senate constitution, the president serves as chair of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, creates and appoints committees, acts as a liaison between UCM faculty and administration and supervises the Faculty Senate office professional.

“I serve on a ton of committees as president,” Jacobs said. “I run the Senate meetings, the executive committee meetings and I also serve on the board of governors academic affairs. I serve on the Academic Council, meet with the president and the interim provost frequently and serve on the president’s cabinet, so it’s really busy.”

Michael Bersin, a music professor and member of Faculty Senate, said he understands the level of commitment it takes to be president. He served as president for four years in two different decades.

“It’s up to the individual to decide if they want to do this,” Bersin said. “It’s a pretty serious undertaking.”

Bersin also said the amount of work that comes with Faculty Senate can have an impact on an instructor’s teaching loads.

The nominations for president are scheduled to open April 1 and are due back April 15. Senators will nominate candidates for the position and then vote at the following meeting in ballot form.

Career services hosts annual BIG career expo

The Career Services Center at the University of Central Missouri is hosting its annual Spring BIG Career Expo from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the Multipurpose Building Arena.

Over 180 employers and graduate schools are expected to be in attendance, representing a variety of fields for students of all majors at the university.

Employer relations coordinator, Joni Porter, said the spring and fall career expos are “basically the same expo twice a year.”

Porter said that the majority of recruiting is done in the fall but there will be the same amount of vendors present in the spring.

Prior to the expo, Career Services is offering all-day resume help from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Ward Edwards Building Room 1200.

Career Services is also hosting BIG – Business, Industry and Government – Interview Day 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in Ward Edwards. Students have the potential to be selected by employers at the expo and offered an interview slot the next day.

“There are 26 of the 180 employers who will be hosting next day interviews,” said

Porter.

The expo is an ideal way for students to meet professionals and provide an outlook on the job market, according to a UCM news release. Students are encouraged to wear professional attire and bring several updated copies of their resume. Professionals will be there to answer any questions.

Juniors and Seniors are recommended to attend for an opportunity for internships or full-time employment as well as speak with graduate professionals from other universities, for those interested in Graduate school.

Students not majoring in business, industry or government are still encouraged

to attend the expo as a networking oppurtunity.

Career Services’ next expo scheduled for March 5 focuses on healthcare and will be followed by an education expo March 14.

Central organization partners with Kansas City schools to feed area

The Kansas City High School Agro Program, designed by Bill Nigro, a Kansas City restauranteur, and Melvin Woods, former dean of Pembroke Hill School, is an initiative to build self-sustaining greenhouses at Kansas City-area high schools that will be partnered with new culinary schools.

Nigro and Woods presented the program to students in the marketing department in April of 2017, but it wasn’t until last fall that students really began working on it.

“UCM as a whole is developing the curriculum,” said Mathew Larman, the UCM Agro Pro project manager. “I think we’re actually going to design the greenhouse once we get the funding. We’re actually going to be part of the proposal for the funding.”

The Agro Program will serve as a model for food production in urban areas, which is a problem that’s expected to grow as the world’s population does. According to a 2009 statement from the U.N. General Assembly, “food production must double by 2050 to meet the demand of the world’s growing population.”

Larman said that they’ve talked to the agriculture education program, the safety sciences program and business programs about various aspects of the developing curriculum, construction and maintenance of the facilities.

Meanwhile, the agriculture department had been working on developing a composting system. UCM’s Enactus group was awarded a $1,500 grant from Unilever, the company behind brands such as Axe and Dove, and are planning to use that money on a composting facility and collection containers.

“It was kind of fun because it was a dif-

ferent idea we had,” said Trey Hecker, a junior construction management major and Enactus president. “Then we had this Agro Pro going on over here, and we thought we could try and incorporate it with it.”

Beyond the waste reduction aspect of using compost, Larman said there is a financial motivation for the schools as well.

“They wanted the project to be completely green because of the funding cuts to the school districts. They wanted it to be self-sustaining,” he said.

One item being collected has become increasingly prevalent, and not just locally.

“What we figured out after doing some research is that used coffee grounds, once they’re rinsed off, can be direct fertilizer for plants.”

The goal for the Kansas City High School Agro Program is for nine area schools to each have a greenhouse, but the current focus is on procuring funding and getting one built, which will eventually

serve as a model for future greenhouses.

“The way we’ve recently started going about it is instead of trying to get funding for the whole project, we figured it would be better to start with just the one and build a solid foundation,” Williams said. “People will be more willing to give to it if they can see that this is a working operation.”

Larman said the project has evolved since being presented and since they’ve started working on it, and the project continues to evolve.

Hecker said a future aspect of the program is to provide opportunities for grants and scholarships, as well as dual-credit courses.

‘THE NOTHING CAN’ FROM MANNA HARVEST HELPS PEOPLE WITH FOOD INSECURITY

“The Nothing Can” is a new fundraiser for Manna Harvest to keep their programs running, such as the Nehemia Feeding Program.

The Nehemia Feeding Program runs through the Shilo Baptist Church and serves a meal every weekday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

Manna Harvest has many other programs that also help with

food insecurity within the community. Moody is hopeful that the Nothing Can will be a useful fundraiser for them to help keep their programs running smoothly.

The Nothing Can is available to purchase for $5 at many organizations around Warrensburg and UCM. It can then be filled with change to bring back to Manna Harvest at the Shilo Baptist Church.

“Anybody can do it,” Moody said.

“All it takes is a desire to help and a heart to serve.”

5) A Crow Looked at Me by Mount Eerie (March 24, 2017)

This is the saddest album I’ve ever listened to, and I love it and its creator, Phil Elverum. It’s an indie-folk album about his wife dying. You feel Elverum’s pain in raising his daughter alone, but you still feel the love he has for her. It’s a beautiful dedication to her, and the connection I feel to their relationship is why it’s number five on my list.

4) DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar (April 14, 2017)

“DAMN.” probably received the most hype out of any album released this year. It’s high on my list because it’s a solid album, but it didn’t make my top three because – though it was good – it didn’t quite meet the hype that followed its release for me. “HUMBLE.” was nominated for a Grammy for Record of the Year and the album itself was nominated for Album of the Year, but I’m still not convinced that the winners of these categories deserved the award more than Kendrick Lamar. The album holds strong lyrics, great features and addictive beats that are appropriate for any occasion.

3) The Search for Everything by John Mayer (April 14, 2017)

I’m pretty sure this album was overlooked just because it was released the same day as “DAMN.” It makes sense just because of the amount of excitement people had for Kendrick to drop his newest masterpiece, but I stand strongly in where I rank John Mayer’s newest album on this list; I know I’m in the minority with this one. Mayer knows who he is and he owns his blues-folk sound. He doesn’t overstep his boundaries by trying something new that exhausts us. He knows what his fanbase wants, and he delivers it.

It’s personal, has variety and is well-arranged.

2) World Eater by Blanck Mass (March 3, 2017)

I’m not usually one to promote an electronic album, but here’s my exception. This album is good. Really good. I feel like I could rage to “Blanck Mass” at a party, but then turn around the next morning and make breakfast to it. The songs have a complex sound and made it so much more difficult for me to take them apart and judge this album objectively. I appreciate “World Eater” for opening up my mind to electronic music and challenging my taste.

1) Pure Comedy by Father John Misty (April 7, 2017)

“Pure Comedy” is actually my least favorite Father John Misty album, but it’s still the best album that was released in 2017. Josh Tillman, the musician behind the Father John Misty pseudonym, said the album is a story about a species born with a half-formed brain and the species’ only hope for survival is to rely on other half-formed brains. The album puts human interaction into a perspective that you’d expect to read out of a philosophy book rather than hear in a coffee shop. It earned the number one spot on my list of 2017 albums because I appreciate the symbolism for love, culture and family as well as the overall sound of each track.

A RESPONSE TO HIGHER E State Support for Higher Education, an investment in Missouri’s economic future As Missourians, we all have a stake in our state’s economic success. As such, we should be cognizant of critical factors that contribute to stronger communities which also mean better public schools for our children and services to improve the quality of our lives. While our state faces budget challenges, higher education continues to be an exceptional asset in helping to meet economic as well as social goals, and citizens deserve a strong public policy in support of colleges and universities as an investment in the public good required to drive Missouri’s future forward. Continued reductions in appropriations for higher education are only hindering the opportunity to maximize the potential these institutions provide the state, and most importantly, directly to its people.

Growing jobs and creating an environment that stimulates the economy for all Missouri residents is the goal. Studies show the value of a college degree includes an enhanced lifetime earning potential of $1 million more for graduates versus those without a degree. EDUCATION BUDGET CUTS Students speak out toward Greitens’ proposal As student leaders of Missouri’s public four-year universities, we are writing to express our deep disappointment with the Governor and his administration’s proposed FY19 budget for higher education funding.

The recommendation includes a $68.1 million—or 10%— reduction to higher education spending. This is on top of the well publicized withholding in FY17 and base cuts in FY18.

Public higher education is an unparalleled economic driver for states like ours.

It is not an exaggeration to say that public education paves the way to the American Dream. In addition, it adds value to those who attend institutions of higher education and for those who benefit from the fruits of its labor.

If the Governor’s budget proposal were to be implemented, it would place public universities in a position where they must continue cutting essential faculty, staff, and crucial programs that benefit our state.

This would be a shame because the impact that our universities have on the workforce

and economy of Missouri make them crucial to Missouri’s resilience and long-term economic prospects. With this budget proposal, Governor Greitens is sacrificing the future and quality of higher education in Missouri, to the detriment of all Missourians.

Budget reductions of this magnitude would undoubtedly cause the rising cost of college to be placed squarely on the backs of students in the form of increased tuition and fees. As some of the most affordable opportunities in higher education

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A call of action countering governor’s veteran’s council appointments Missouri’s governor is responsible for making various appointments to state boards and commissions; to ensure our government has balanced leadership not solely driven by public and private political agendas, these appointments must undergo a recommendation and/or vetting process to ensure the affected stakeholders (who are also tax-payers) within our state support these appointments.

Next, the Missouri State Senate is responsible for reviewing the appointments, determining whether those appointed can advance the best interest of the board or commission to which they are appointed, ensuring that Missouri fulfills its constitutional and/or statutory obligations to the affected citizens of our state. The Senate has the responsibility to take review of these appointments seriously and not to simply “rubber-stamp” these appointments.

Most of these boards and commissions are not something we think about daily, if ever, but those leading these boards and commissions most certainly make decisions that have a direct impact—positive or negative—on you or someone in your life. On January 31, 2018, next Wednesday, the Senate will consider whether to confirm the last two members of the Missouri Veterans Commission. By way of background, there are nine commissioners on the Missouri Veterans Commission, four are legislators appointed by the State Legislature. The remaining five commissioners are recommended by the state’s veterans service organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, or the Missouri Association of Veterans Service Organizations, to the Governor.

The Governor then makes an appointment from these recommendations, after which these appointments are reviewed and if approved, are confirmed by the Senate. If they aren’t confirmed, perhaps because the process was flawed or the appointees weren’t properly recommended, then the process starts over. Commissioner appointments were staggered appointments by design to ensure no single governor could appoint a majority of the commissioners; however, the previous administration allowed many board members and commissioners to continue to serve in their roles despite their expired terms, which was the case for all five of the Missouri Veterans Commission governor-appointed commissioners.

Three of Gov. Greitens’ five appointees have already been confirmed. These appointees all seem to have a personal connection to our Governor; they are either donors to his campaign or employees from one of his corporations. Additionally, according to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Missouri Commander, Ruben Armenta, our state’s veterans service organizations, direct consumers of the care and services provided by Missouri Veterans Commission, has not recommended any of these appointees.

Each Missouri Veterans Commissioner is a non-compensated director of the agency that provides: skilled nursing care in our state’s veterans homes, care that is at such a high level other states look to Missouri in hopes of being able to replicate our state’s exceptional model; beautiful cemeteries that establish a permanent resting place of honor and reverence for those who have borne the battle, and a claims processing division that is responsible for

putting more than $1.5 billion dollars of federal benefits into the pocketbooks of Missouri’s veterans—year after year.

Our state has a nearly 125-year tradition of aggressively advancing veterans’ rights, care, and benefits; thanks to the citizens of our state and legislation from years’ past, they do this all while costing our state tax-payers nothing. For what may be the first time in Missouri Veterans Commission history, our veterans may be subject to all the governor-appointees being appointed by one governor—that governor is none other than Eric Greitens.

The Missouri Veterans Commission, in its present form, was established many years ago by visionary veteran leaders, including the late Jim Whitfield, and elected officials in our state who knew that the care of our frail elderly veterans; the permanent peaceful and reverent interment of our veterans, and the processing of an unfathomable amount of benefits for Missouri veterans must be insulated from political agendas.

The appointment of the final two commissioners, who as a reminder, have not been recommended for appointment by our state’s veterans service organizations, to Missouri Veterans Commission, will destroy that much-needed insulation. That insulation is there exclusively for protecting our state’s veterans from political agendas; its elimination will expand Gov. Eric Greitens’ influence on our increasingly fragile state government. Further, the destruction of this system designed to protect our veterans will make him the first governor in recent history, if ever, to have majority control of the Missouri Veterans Commission through his appointees—that is—if they are all confirmed by our sen-

ators, the elected officials we voted into office.

As a Missouri veteran, an officer in a veterans service organization and a tax-payer, I spend a majority of my personal time advocating and educating for, and about, the needs of veterans and their families across the state of Missouri. I have concerns about the future of that care and I speak not only of the veterans who currently reside in our seven veterans homes but also those young veterans who are eligible for residency and for benefits. These young veterans are those who are attending our colleges and universities despite illnesses and disabilities, for which they receive care through Missouri VA hospitals and compensation and benefits received through contact with our veterans service organizations.

I feel if I do not speak out now then there will be no one left to speak for me when I need care.

I urge you to consider the potentially devastating impact current and future politics could have—not only now, but also with the elections of each successive governor—on the care of our state’s veterans, every single one of them, if all of the governor’s appointees are confirmed.

I urge every resident in the State of Missouri to contact your senator and encourage them to consider our revered veterans and their families as they consider the appointments to the very commission that has the capability to help, or hurt, them.

Released last fall, “Marshall” is set around the real life court case of The State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell. The story mainly follows Chadwick Boseman as the titled role of legendary civil rights advocate and lawyer Thurgood Marshall. If his name doesn’t sound familiar, don’t worry the film fully explains who he was, although, he is someone you should already know.

It was 1940 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when an African-American chauffeur named Joseph Spell was accused of raping and attempting to murder his employer’s wife ¬– a wealthy, white woman. In this time period, segregation was still enforced in some states; it’s worth mentioning that the Civil Rights Act wasn’t passed until 1964.

Because of racial issues surrounding the case, Thurgood Marshall is sent to defend Spell by the NAACP, National Association of the Advancement of Colored People. Due to a legal loophole, Marshall is prevented from being Spell’s attorney.

This forces him to rely on inexperienced, criminal-court lawyer Sam Friedman to win the case, played by Josh Gad – whom you might recognize as Olaf from “Frozen.”

One of the best aspects of “Marshall” is the acting. About every main actor delivers a good performance: Boseman as Marshall, Gad as Friedman, Sterling K. Brown as Joseph Spell and even James Cromwell as the racist judge.

My favorite element of the film was the relationship between Marshall and Friedman. They don’t start off as friends, but overtime they start to form a genuine respect for one another. It’s done very well; I enjoyed their banter as much as their arguing.

“Marshall” is a very well-made movie.

From start to finish, it’s filled with creative camera angles and effective filming techniques. For example, the camera shakes

slightly in several scenes to help create the feeling of tension. These may seem like minor details, but to a film buff like myself, it helped me appreciate the movie a little more.

I have always enjoyed courtroom dramas such as “Twelve Angry Men,” “A Few Good Men” and of course “To Kill A Mockingbird” – which is a movie I had to mention at some point. Naturally, I got a kick out of seeing the defense attorneys find holes in a supposedly solid case.

Much of the film is really what happened, but not all of it is. “Marshall” isn’t 100 percent historically accurate.

Film critic Roger Friedman, nephew of the real life Sam Friedman, had problems with the portrayal of his uncle.

“Almost not a word of my great uncle’s depiction in the movie is accurate,” Roger Friedman said in his own movie review.

In truth, Sam Friedman was actually an experienced trial lawyer and was just as talented as Thurgood Marshall. He was portrayed to be insecure for the film’s narrative, which is true for other people and events in “Marshall” too.

With that in mind, the film admits that real people were fictionalized in the closing credits. It also doesn’t begin with “Based on a true story” in the opening credits, unlike some other inaccurate Hollywood movies. So in reality, “Marshall” isn’t false advertisement. Every movie based on a true story takes creative liberties, which is why there is no such thing as a completely accurate historical film, right?

And speaking of the credits, before the end, a recording of the real life Thurgood Marshall is played – so, don’t leave the theater too soon.

Honesty, I was almost expecting the film to be another biopic movie made to win Oscars, but “Marshall” is a really good movie. I was pleasantly surprised by the final product.

I watched a lot movies in 2016, but I’m glad I went back and didn’t look over “Marshall.”

FORMER MULE SIGNS WITH CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Former Mule’s All-American quarterback Garrett Fugate signed a contract to play for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League Jan. 24.

His UCM career unfortunately ended with a torn ACL in the Mules’ 2016 playoff game. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Fugate with the Mules dropping their playoff game against Harding and the draft only four months away. ACL injuries normally require six months of recovery, but some doctors recommend that rebab takes nine months to complete.

Fugate played four seasons at UCM and spent one of them as the punter before becoming the starting quarterback.

He was named a Don Hansen All-American in 2016 for his performance that season, throwing 31 touchdowns to nine interceptions and surpassing 4,000 yards of total offense. On top of that, he owns UCM records for rushing performances over a single game, season and career.

Fugate generated some buzz at the 2017 NFL Draft. Some experts projected he would become a late-round draft pick or a team would pick him up as an undrafted free agent. The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs were among the teams showing interest. In the end, Fugate wasn’t picked up by a team for the upcoming season.

“I was only four months out of surgery and teams weren’t really willing to take the risk on me,” Fugate said in a phone interview Friday.

Fugate spent the 2017 season further rehabbing his knee and training. He said

he spent time at Parabolic Rehab in New Jersey before coming back home and preparing to break into the professional football scene.

“I trained about five or six days a week, just trying to stay in shape and keep my knee healthy,” Fugate said.

The Chiefs and Packers gave him another look in the fall, but the same concerns from before of his ACL injury and being from a Division II school kept them from signing a deal with him. The Alouettes arranged for a work out with Fugate, liked what they saw and offered him a contract.

“I worked out with Montreal a few weeks after the Chiefs and Packers. They have a new coaching staff and they reached out to me to offer a contract so I took it,” Fugate said The question now becomes whether or not Fugate can transition to the slightly different ruleset that the CFL employs.

Softball season is now upon us as the Central Missouri team opened practice to prepare to make a race for Division-II World Series.

The Jennies’ season begins Feb. 2 at the Southeastern Oklahoma Region Invitational in Durant, Oklahoma, where they will play six games in a three-day tournament.

As the team prepares for the season, they are glad to welcome back starters Courtni Smith, Hailey Crabtree and Allie Dishinger. Smith looks to lead the team this year following her 2017 stats of second-most hits with 47, 13 steal and three home runs.

Smith emphasized her excitement for the upcoming season with her team. She said the team has prepared in their practice routine and that she has high hopes for the playoffs.

“I know that we can go far; we’re good and have a lot of talent,” Smith said.

There is a big gap to fill the Jennies’ big contributor – Lauren Mabe. For her duration at UCM, Mabe was able to put up stats for most hits in Jennies’ history with 242 in a three-year span. She also led the team in runs last year with 34 and four home runs.

Jennies Head Coach Susan Anderson said Mabe had a huge impact on the team in her career here.

“We will definitely miss Lauren. She was a four-year starter and an All-Conference/All-Region first baseman for us who put up big offensive numbers,” she said.

Anderson said she left a legacy mark at UCM but now it is an opportunity for new leaders and difference-makers on the team.

The Jennies are welcoming three junior transfers: Taylor Dames, Shelby Clark and Payton

Summers. Six freshmen were also added to the roster. There are five returning seniors that all have experience starting; four had the opportunity of being in the Division-II World Series season in 2015.

Infielder Emily King said she thinks the newcomers have adjusted well to the program and she believes they’re beginning to buy into the Jennies’ culture.

“Honestly they have fit in pretty well, looking out I don’t think you could tell who’s a freshmen or who’s a senior,” King said in between sessions at practice.

Coach Anderson said the new players’ adjustments show their hard work.

“They are becoming more aggressive base runners, as well as smart defensive players and understanding what it means to be a great teammate,” Anderson said.

The Jennies’ schedule is looking to be highly competitive this season, beginning early in the month of February against top teams in the regional MIAA Conference including the Jennies’ rivals last year – Central Oklahoma.

“They are definitely someone we need to take seriously. We had a tough time last year with them.”

Smith said.

The Jennies are projected to finish fourth in the MIAA conferences according to the conference polls. Coach Anderson also looks to get her sixthstraight winning season with the Jennies as they work toward the Division II World Series.

“This is a talented and versatile group who are highly competitive,” Anderson said.

Look out for the Jennies in their upcoming season beginning March 7 when they go head-to-head against Rockhurst University.

Mules complete comeback in Topeka Facing a 13-point deficit at half time, the Mules basketball team caught fire and defeated the Washburn Ichabods 63-55 Jan. 27 in Topeka, Kansas.

The Ichabods sat in first place of the MIAA, but have now suffered two losses in a week moving them into a tie with Northwest Missouri State for first.

The Mules found their shooting touch in the second half after an undesirable first-half performance. The Ichabods used an 11-0 run early in the half to get control of the game and hold a 32-19 lead at intermission. The Mules came out of the locker room and immediately closed the gap with a 9-0 run.

Ten minutes into the half, the Mules had outscored Washburn 23-6 and lead

42-38. Free throws clinched the game as the Mules went 9-10 down the stretch to complete the comeback.

Jakob Lowrance exposed the Ichabods’ defense scoring 20 points, 16 of which came in the second half and fueled the comeback. He finished one rebound shy of a double-double and shot an impressive 9-11. Matt Wilkinson scored 11 points that included a 9-10 performance at the free throw line.

The Mules start a three game homestand Thursday Feb. 1 against Central Oklahoma; tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Jennies pick up 14th straight win Sixth ranked Jennies basketball remained undefeated in MIAA play with a 72-63 win over Washburn Jan. 27. After trailing by a point in the first quarter, the Jennies overwhelmed the Ichabods outscoring them 22-8 in the second quarter.

This makes it 14 straight for the Jennies and their lead in the MIAA is up to three games. They host Central Oklahoma Thursday to kick off a threegame homestand, tip-off is planned for 5:30 p.m.

Mules and Jennies enjoy success at track relays Eight Mules made NCAA qualifying marks over the weekend at the Mules Relays. The Jennies took first place in 11 events and four women earned provisional qualifying marks.

Jesse Miller made the seventh highest high jump in UCM history, clearing the 6 foot 11-inch bar, which was enough to take first. The Mules took five of the top six spots in the 60-meter dash with Akeemo Minot leading the way.

The Jennies dominated the throwing events. Amy Dorge and Ashlan Bur-

ton took first and second in the weight throw, both also earned provisional marks. The squad of Alliah McClendon, Grace Williams, Laia Gonzalez and Mariah Elmore won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4 minutes, 6.51 seconds, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the pack.

THIS MONTH IN UCM HISTORY

1968

CMSC students decorate a Christmas tree in the Union.

Students at CMS sent a recorded Christmas Greeting to soldiers in Vietnam. The program was part of a student produced program broadcast on Christmas Day by the American Forces Viet Nam network. Groups on campus were incited to participate and KCMW-FM, the college radio station, produced the program. In return, the college received sixty letters addressed to “Coed” from all over Vietnam. The letters were varied in content, but they all expressed appreciation for the caring message.

1993 Jennie Shelly Metzger drives to the goal against Emporia.

The Jennies basketball team had been struggling in the first half of the MIAA conference season, but persevered against Emporia in a 65-50 win. Suffering from shooting and rebounding troubles, the team rebounded nicely, taking an early lead and holding it the entire game. The Jennies held a 20-plus lead until less than a minute remained. Winning not only the game, but confidence as well, the Jennies moved up to a 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

CAMPUS CRIME It was reported at 7:10 p.m. Jan. 16 that a student stole a meal at Todd Dining Hall. The student was escorted out of the dining hall and verbally banned until he swiped his card, per wishes of the manager. The student will be referred for University discipline.

It was reported at 7:51 p.m. Jan. 16 that a student was being harassed by a former roommate. A prior incident occurred the evening before at Wal-Mart when the former roommate made obscene gestures towards the student and passengers in her car, as well as made verbal comments. The former roommate will be referred for University discipline.

It was reported that at 11:51 p.m.

Jan. 17, an officer on foot patrol detected an odor of marijuana in Nattinger hall. The source could not be located.

It was reported that at 12:14 a.m. Jan. 19, an officer on foot patrol detected an odor of marijuana being emitted on the second floor near the glass walkway in The Crossing. The odor was strongest in the center of the walkway, but the source was unable to be located.

Jazmine D’Ann Kalamon, 20, was arrested at 12:37 a.m. Jan. 19 on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol near the intersection of Christopher and Zoll streets. Kalamon was later released on signature bond.

A possible drug law violation on the second floor of East Ellis was reported at 12:27 a.m. Jan. 19. An odor of marijuana was detected in the hall, but K9 Echo could not locate the source of the odor.

A vehicle in Lot 18 was towed at 12:32 p.m. Jan. 19 due to an excessive amount of unpaid parking tickets. Tip-Top Towing took possession of the vehicle.

A possible drug law violation was reported in The Crossing at 11:53 p.m. Jan. 19. The source was traced to one room. The occupant claimed that she was around marijuana at an off-campus location. The incident was forwarded for disciplinary referral.

James Salmon, 20, was arrested at 1:02 a.m. Jan. 20 on suspicion of possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and failing to obey a red light after failing to stop at a red signal at S. Holden and W. South streets. Salmon was later released on signature bond.

Trent Foggy, 19, was arrested at 2:09 a.m. Jan. 20 on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia after an officer witnessed Foggy and another individual sitting inside of a vehicle. Foggy was later released on signature bond.

An officer was dispatched to Nattinger hall to investigate a report of three intoxicated females at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 20. All three females were later determined to be under-age and intoxicated. The females were allowed to return to their rooms for the night. The incident was referred to university housing for disciplinary action.

Malik Epps, 19, and T’Andra Smith, 18, were both arrested at 8:01 p.m. Jan. 20 on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. An officer noticed a strong marijuana odor near an occupied Chevy Cruze in Lot 34 before making contact with Epps and Smith. Both

were released on summons at a later time.

Amariah Wooten, 21, was arrested at 1:11 p.m. Jan. 21 on suspicion of operating a vehicle without a valid license.

Wooten was later released on summons.

An officer responded to a call of a vehicle with a broken window and items stolen at the Skyhaven Airport at 10:55 p.m. Jan. 21. The victim and a bystander witnessed a van flee the area. The van was followed to city limits, where Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The vehicle was later stopped and an individual was arrested.

It was reported at 12:58 p.m. Jan. 23 that a blood drive truck backed into a light pole. The driver claimed that she had backed the truck into the pole around 8:00 that morning. The truck received no damage, but the light pole was leaning. Facilities Planning and Operations removed the light pole until repairs could be made.

Kylia Floyd, 20, was arrested at 10:39 p.m. Jan. 23 on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia after an odor of marijuana was detected from her room on the second floor of North Ellis. Floyd was later released on signature bond.

An officer responded to a call of a possible drug law violation at 12:07 a.m.

Jan. 24 at Hosey residence hall. The responding officer found the source of the odor, but occupants did not answer.

The incident will be referred to university housing for disciplinary action.

Two officers detected a strong odor of marijuana in Central Village during a follow up at 6:27 p.m. Jan. 24. The source was located, and four individuals were referred to university housing for discipline.

It was reported at 8:26 p.m. Jan. 24 that a student in Panhellenic had her keys and wallet stolen while she was sleeping.

A vehicle was towed in Lot 1 at 2:17 p.m. Jan. 25 after displaying a missing parking permit. The permit was removed and the vehicle was taken into possession by Tip-Top Towing. The owner of the vehicle was banned from parking on all UCM lots for one year.

A disturbance was reported at 5:56 p.m. Jan. 25 after a male and female had a verbal altercation in the parking lot at Central Village. The altercation escalated into attempted assault using vehicles. No criminal charges were pursued.

Trey Bradley, 21, was arrested at the Student Wellness and Recreation Center at 5:58 p.m. 25 for multiple warrants out of Warrensburg and Clay County, Missouri, on suspicion of trespassing, driving while suspended, and gambling.

An officer detected a strong marijuana odor on the third floor of South Yeater at 11:37 p.m. Jan. 25. The source of the odor could not be located.

Christian Harmon, 20, was arrested for possession of marijuana on the second floor of South Yeater at 11:43 p.m. Jan. 25. Harmon was later released on signature bond.

POLICE BEAT Daniel Netz, 48, was arrested Jan. 12 on Main Street on suspicion of unlawfully using a weapon, discharge into a home, assault in the second degree and resisting arrest for a felony.

Cicely Hall was arrested at 4:15 p.m.

Jan. 13 at Walmart on suspicion of shoplifting.

John Neher, 19, was arrested Jan. 13 on Streck Lane on suspicion of possession of a fictitious/altered license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Keith Martin, 24, was arrested Jan. 13 on Maguire Street on suspicion of driving with a revoked license, driving without headlights and a warrant from another jurisdiction.

Sarah McCollum, 21, was arrested Jan. 13 on Maguire Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Paula Beam, 49, was arrested Jan. 13 on East Gay Street on suspicion of driving with a revoked license.

It was reported Jan. 15 that a female was running half naked in the middle of 9th Street again.

Jacob Pressly, 27, was arrested Jan. 15 on Carpenter Street on suspicion of driving with a revoked license. Pressly was later released on signature bond.

It was reported at 9:09 a.m. Jan. 16 that a group of people purchased over $7,000 of goods from a local business using fraudulent gift cards.

It was reported at 4:46 p.m. Jan. 16 that wire fraud occurred at a local business in the amount of $107,846.

Roger Lee, 50, was arrested at 10:19 p.m. Jan. 16 on Broad Street on suspicion of domestic assault after telling the victim to “shut her mouth� before proceeding to slap her across the face during an argument.

It was reported Jan. 17 that the public library located drug paraphernalia hidden on a bookshelf.

It was reported Jan. 21 on West South Street that a domestic assault occurred between a victim and her boyfriend. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

William Strohmeyer was arrested at 3:56 p.m. Jan. 22 on East Gay Street on suspicion of driving with a suspended license. Strohmeyer was later released with signed citations.

Jesus Hermosillo, 43, was arrested Jan. 17 on suspicion of driving without a valid license.

Kayleigh Graffam, 19, was arrested Jan. 22 on Broad Street on suspicion of trespassing into a house. After being arrested, Graffam proceeded to assault officers during the booking process. Graffam was placed on a 24-hour hold.

It was reported Jan. 19 that a white male stole a can of chewing tobacco from Murphy USA gas station.

It was reported at 11:25 a.m. Jan. 23 that a subject attempted to burglarize a local car wash on West Young Street.

It was reported Jan. 19 that a female on Grover Street had her wallet and purse stolen after finding the front door open.

It was reported at 4:10 p.m. Jan. 23 that two subjects were arrested on West Clark Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

It was reported at 9:56 p.m. Jan. 20 that an officer responded to a criminal intelligence call regarding gunshots heard three days prior to find shell casings found near a residence on West Clark Street.

Robert Davenport, 38, was arrested Jan. 20 on South Maguire Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brandon Marr, 18, was arrested Jan. 21 on West Market Street on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Kayla Conrad, 21, was arrested Jan. 21 on suspicion for failing to obey an officer.

Conrad was detained for 12 hours due to intoxication.

Raesean Williams, 20, was arrested Jan. 23 on East Cooper Boulevard on suspicion of shoplifting.

Jameyah Ramsey, 18, and Kieffer Williams, 22, were arrested Jan. 23 on West Clark Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Brett Ashbaugh, 19, and Conner Cummings, 20, were arrested Jan. 23 on West Gay Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Cummings was also arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Travis Mitchell, 19, was arrested Jan. 24

Sheldon Payne, 19, was arrested Jan. 24 on suspicion of driving without a valid license and failing to yield at a yield sign.

Walter Ford, 32, was arrested Jan. 24 on West Clark Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia and warrants from other jurisdictions.

Brandon Wall, 23, was arrested Jan. 24 on suspicion for property damage to a business.

Angela Turner, 21, was arrested Jan. 25 on North Main Street on suspicion of driving while her license was revoked, careless driving, improper registration, failing to obey a stop sign, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and failing to obey an officer.

Devon Hause, 23, was arrested Jan. 25 on East Clark Street on suspicion of obstructing process.

Mackenzie Mesecher, 29, was arrested Jan. 25 on Fox Run Court on suspicion of attempting to entice a child, distribution of pornographic material to a minor and statutory sodomy of a minor.

He is still being detained in the Johnson County Jail, and a court date is still pending.
