For over 50 years, the UCM aviation program has been teaching students to fly at the Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport west on U.S. Highway 50.

To continue the tradition, the Sunderland Foundation has pledged $1 million toward construction of a new terminal/flight school building, which would also include meeting spaces and offices.

Courtney Goddard, associate vice president for advancement, said the Sunderland Foundation’s $1 million pledge will join another $1 million pledge made by an anonymous donor to construct the new facility at the airport.

Although the original plans called for $3.1 million to fund construction of the facility, Goddard said construction may commence with the current $2 million. Terry Hunt, chair of the School of Aviation, said the square footage of the new facility has

not been determined.

“We’re going to bring in experts to ascertain whether a state-of-the-art terminal can be built for the private funds we have already secured,” Goddard said. “If we discover that we do need another million dollars to build the terminal we want and that our students deserve, then we will continue to secure additional private funding.”

Hunt said the ideal facility would differ from reality.

Ryan Snow, a police officer and certified drug recognition expert from the University of Illinois, spoke to students Monday about the harmful effects of cannabis.

The Office of Campus Community Health and Health Studies hosted the event. The office promotes health, provides counseling services and health and wellness programs.

“I’ve done a lot of research outside of my physical position as a police officer on my own time about drugs and the human body and how they impact society,” Snow said. “I try to let them know what’s here, what’s happening and how to fix (the students’) lives.”

Snow said he was inspired to start researching and teaching about cannabis when he discovered the dangers it could cause, such as the impacts of driving while high.

“I really caught a big bug when working as a police officer. I saw the impact impaired driving can have on a community and the innocence of a lot of the victims that are involved with impaired driving crashes and things like that,” Snow said.

In his presentation, Snow said cannabis affects working memory, learning and information processing. He said it can also cause students to skip class and harm their GPA. During his presentation, he talked about a study showing that students who smoke cannabis daily are close to 60 percent less likely to graduate.

“There are plenty of drugs out there that are worse than cannabis, but this is something that’s big and it’s widespread on college campuses and I think more people need to be educated on it rather than just accepting it,” Snow said.

“Two individuals attempted to rob him... he was shot in the back of the head,” Snow said. “They tried to cover up the murder and dumped his body...it was all over a very small amount of cash...these are campus-level dealers.”

Snow said this death affected everyone, not just the campus.

“It impacted the entire community,” he said.

Snow said he understands many students smoke cannabis to help with anxiety or sleep issues, but these issues could also be caused by withdrawal from cannabis as

well. Snow said federal law prohibits any use of cannabis, including medical marijuana at college campuses.

“Anytime you’re self-medicating, it can be dangerous,” Snow said. “Go to your doctor. Talk about your options...explore your own ways to medicate and understand that the decisions you make have consequences one way or another, so if you’re choosing a substance like that to self-medicate, there are consequences that come with that. I would encourage students to look at their options.”

Janis Putnam, professor of nursing, said this is the first time that the Office of Campus Community Health and the Health

Studies Program received an opportunity grant to support their research.

“We received a UCM Alumni Foundation Grant for approximately $3,000 to help with the speaker expenses and data collection,” Putnam said. “Our research is exploring the changing cannabis culture on Missouri college campuses and how we can prepare professional development and academic curriculums to meet these needs.”

She said these presentations are helpful to the students and their careers. She said they had about 50 attendees, including officers from Public Safety.

Unity Week brings students together to learn about different cultures Danielle Friedmeyer For the Muleskinner

Strangers and old friends gathered to work on spontaneous designs for their representations of the dreamcatcher – each string and thread that become intertwined holding their own, new symbolic meaning.

As part of Unity Week, Student Activities hosted a Native Culture Appreciation event Feb. 21. The event, which took place at Cafe Rouge inside the Elliott Student Union was not just about creating dreamcatchers for Unity Week but was also an incentive to get students excited about the 2019 Trading Moon Pow Wow that is scheduled for March 9, according to graduate student, Haydee Reyes.

Reyes, a first-year graduate student who helped run the event, said the event’s purpose was to create and educate people about the origin and the purpose of dreamcatchers.

“A lot of times people just see it as a fun decoration,” Reyes said. “They are making representations of dreamcatchers as there are qualities that make a dreamcatch-

er authentic.”

Several students participated in the event, and while they were from different cultures and backgrounds, the event brought people together to learn as a community about Native American culture and the origins of dreamcatchers.

Marissa Ginger, a junior undergraduate student, said making a representation of a dreamcatcher was a nice stress reliever.

Ginger said her favorite part about learning about the origins of the dreamcatcher was the symbolism of the beads.

“Some believe the beads symbolize the spider of the web or some believe that the beads symbolize the good dreams that cannot pass through the web, immortalizing the form of sacred charms,” she said.

Chris Ekengren, a junior undergraduate student, said his favorite part of the event was starting out with an idea and creating a design out of it.

“A lot of the different materials they use have a lot of different symbolism behind them,” Ekengren said. Regarding the concept of unity, Reyes said unity “is more about taking all of our differences and then embracing those, but also embracing the

While sharing stories and listening to the others around her, Ginger said unity is “everyone understanding everyone else’s differences, or not necessarily understanding, but being aware and respecting everyone’s differences, and coming together for a greater cause, whether to create dream-

catchers or to solve a problem.”

As Ekengren created and worked on his design, he said unity is the inclusion of absolutely everybody, whether you agree with them or not.

“It’s about everybody coming together, forming a community, supporting each other and just finding a way to generally better each other’s lives,” he said.

Tunnel of Oppression seeks to teach students empathy Madison Preston For the Muleskinner

UCM’s Spotlight hosted the Tunnel of Oppression as a part of Unity Week, Feb. 18 and 19 in the Elliott Student Union.

Unity Week aims to expose students to various cultures and under-represented minorities through speaker events and activities throughout the week.

“To me, Unity Week is an opportunity.

It’s a chance for students to experience something outside of their comfort zones and hopefully learn something new,” said Michael Lostritto, graduate student and debriefing facilitator. “And that’s what college is all about.”

The Tunnel exposes students to marginalized groups of people to encourage students to have conversations around topics

that otherwise might be considered uncomfortable. Each room in the Tunnel features scenes and images representative of marginalized groups and the challenges they face.

“We have international students talking about times they’ve felt discriminated against because of where they’re coming from or what they look like,” said Haydee Reyes, Office of Student Activities graduate assistant and event organizer. “We have a room about the LGBTQ community, and really, it’s just to open the eyes of people who don’t face those oppressions lingering over their heads and to get them to try and empathize what it is like to be living as part of said community and living their everyday lives with those struggles.”

Danielle Friedmeyer, a sophomore digital media production student, said she

hoped attending the Tunnel would be a learning experience.

“I thought it would be interesting to learn about those who face oppression, and how more privileged individuals can take action along with those who are oppressed to help change the world we live in for the better,” Friedmeyer said.

Reyes said she hopes this event is eye-opening for students and that they deepen their understanding and empathy toward their peers.

“I hope they just get to thinking and be empathetic of others around them because, although you might not see an outward form of oppression, you never know what’s going on behind the scenes internally,” Reyes said. “So I hope students are just able to kind of think about what their peers and faculty members and people in

the community are going through.”

Friedmeyer said attending the Tunnel enhanced her perspective on the struggles that many other people face.

“The event made me more aware of the people around me and made me realize that judging those around us — in many instances — is a form of oppression even if we don’t realize it because we never know what that individual is facing,” Friedmeyer said.

Lostritto said his job as the debriefing facilitator allowed him to have important conversations with participants.

“It was encouraging. I love hearing about student experiences and seeing the learning processes they go through first-hand,” Lostritto said. “It was also great to see that the program was succeeding at providing a challenging learning experience.”

New TRIO lounge creates more space for students Erin Wides Features Editor

An empty classroom in the Humphreys Building was recently transformed into a lounge with couches, tables, whiteboards, a projector and more — all for TRIO students to use as they see fit.

At the end of fall semester, UCM reorganized its various departments into schools and a class that was previously taught on the first floor of Humphreys was moved to a new location.

Chris Beggs, director of TRIO, said their office wrote a proposal and submitted it to the university to acquire the space.

Lacey Hites, assistant director of TRIO, said they got new furniture over winter break and by January they turned it into a lounge for their students.

Laptops were purchased with federal funds and can be used as resources for students in the space.

“There’s a laptop cart that has 36 laptops they can check out and use in the space, some modular furniture, desks that are mobile, whiteboards and some audio and video equipment,” Beggs said.

Prior to the new room, TRIO had three areas: a computer lab, a classroom and offices.

Despite how new the space is and the university being closed due to winter weather, it is slowly beginning to be used.

“I’ve noticed more and more students are starting to use it now that they’re realizing ‘this is kind of a freeform space for me to use as I need,’” Beggs said.

Omunique Bratton, junior social work major, works in the lounge tracking who comes in and goes out, as well as using it for her own work.

“It’s a space for TRIO students to have more space to work on their assignments, group assignments or just as a place to hang out with your friends,” Bratton said.

Hites said she plans to use the space for a new initiative with peer mentoring. Before, TRIO had a classroom that was used primarily for group tutoring.

“Don’t be hesitant to come in. It’s open to any TRIO student and this space is for you so don’t be afraid to occupy it.”

-Omunique Bratton “We recently brought two peer mentors on to staff,” Hites said. “They have a cohort of students each that they meet with and interact with. We encourage them to use that lounge space because the more times you’re in it, the more you’re like, ‘Oh this is our space now.’”

Beggs said the furniture in the lounge makes the space more inviting.

“If you see a couch, you know what you can do there,” Beggs said. “A desk, you don’t just really want to hang out at a desk.”

When traffic in the lounge picks up, Beggs said students enjoy staying and hanging out.

“You’ll notice, at some of the busier times, students like to lounge here,” Beggs said. “We want them to come here and do work, but we also want them to form a community where they’re supporting each other and we’re starting to see that happen more organically.”

Not only can students use the lounge to rest and study, TRIO hosts a variety of events as well.

“We also put on fun activities in this

room. Back in January we had our movie night, so we used the big screen and put on ‘Monsters Inc.’ and had snacks,” Bratton said. “It’s supposed to be versatile, not just for one thing. That’s what the computer lab is for.”

To students who may be uncertain on entering the new space, Bratton said it is there to be used.

“Don’t be hesitant to come in. It’s open to any TRIO student and this space is for you so don’t be afraid to occupy it,” Bratton said.

UCM to participate in statewide tornado drill Muleskinner Staff The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and Lee’s Summit will participate in a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. March 5. The drill will last about 15 minutes, according to a press release.

The UCM Department of Public Safety/ environmental health and safety encourages faculty and staff to share information about the drill with students and colleagues.

During the drill, participants will go to the lowest floor of an indoor shelter, pref-

erably a room or hallway and away from glass.

Designated shelter areas at UCM are identified on emergency building plans, posted near hallways and stairs and participants must remain in the shelter until the drill is over.

The Lee’s Summit campus will be notified by the outdoor warning services and through the Nixel Alerting Service.

Richard Tabor: A man for all seasons Kaitlin Brothers News Editor

Richard Tabor was known for his warm personality, variety of interests, his intelligence and his vast knowledge of various and interesting subjects.

Tabor, former UCM professor and chair of the agriculture department, died Feb 21 at age 82.

Tabor started working at UCM in 1973 and retired in 2000. Fanson Kidwaro, professor and program coordinator for the agriculture department, said he met Tabor when he came to UCM to get his master’s degree.

“He was a good guy,” Kidwaro said. “He was very student-centered, always wanted his students to succeed. He always wanted to see the department to continue to grow.”

Kidwaro said Tabor had an interesting way of getting to know his students by taking their “mugshot” and hanging them up in his office.

“He put them in his office so he could remember them,” Kidwaro said.

John Inglish, director emeritus of public relations, said he knew Tabor when he worked at the university. They were also neighbors for over 18 years. He said Tabor was a well-rounded man with many interests, including going to a shooting range near Higginsville, Missouri, for fun.

“He was a really bright, warm, caring individual.”

-John Inglish “Richard loved firearms. He was an avid shooter,” Inglish said. “Several of his friends would go up there and shoot all the time and he was good. They had competitions and he’d win...I enjoyed watching him.”

volunteered in the community.

“He was a really bright, warm, caring individual,” he said. “We had a neighborhood stray cat run around. He’s the one who adopted it. He was just constantly carrying that cat around. He spent a lot of time and energy working at the food center here in Warrensburg. He was a great guy.”

While working at Oak Ridge University, Tabor became interested in studying bomb fallout isotopes as well as radon gas and irradiated foods. His projects caught the attention of scientific journals and the media, according to his obituary.

Inglish said Tabor was a scholarly man who loved to learn in his spare time.

“He was a man for all seasons,” he said.

“He was the most intellectually curious person I think I’ve ever known. He loved to read Aristotle for fun. He was just interested in everything. During retirement, every time we’d meet at the mailbox he’d be picking up yet another package of courses on tape that he would study and take.

We have people from the Health Center here...so we were actually role modeling as well as having students from classes come in to listen because this is the kind of training they might have in their future careers.”

Yasmine Hora, junior health studies major, said she learned a lot more about cannabis from the event and the many risks it can cause. She said she had a friend overdose on marijuana, making her end up in the hospital.

She said her friend went to a party and didn’t know how much cannabis her friend was consuming. The friend ended up smoking too much for her to handle.

“After that, she drove on the highway which is a bad choice,” Hora said. “She parked her car on the highway and then walked to QuikTrip. From there, before she passed out, she (said) ‘Call 911.’ She was sent to the hospital.”

Hora said this experience was a wake-up call for her and her friend about the potential dangers of cannabis.

“She refuses to go around it now,” Hora said.

Putnam said the information helped students understand cannabis and the effects it could have on their job performance in the future.

“I do think that there’s a lot of information out right now and a lot of information being driven by the industry as far as the benefits,” she said. “So this was a nice counterbalance to talk about the risks.

Now I think the students that are here have a little more knowledge on what’s going on out there...there are going to be types of jobs that they may get drug tested in, and to have an understanding of ‘marijuana is not just natural and it’s not just safe,’ but it’s also something that can be tested and lose their job over. That’s an important concept to have.”

Snow said he is not a representative of the University of Illinois during these presentations.

Exonerated citizen speaks on overcoming wrongful conviction Anaiyeh Smith

Social Media Coordinator Imagine being in prison for 24 years. Being that I am 22 years old, it is very hard to imagine. Here, I’ll paint that picture. For me it would be like being born in prison, living my entire life, every meal I had eaten would be a “prison patty” as Darryl Howard called it. That would be about 1,251 weeks, or 8,760 days or 210,240 hours.

Howard came to speak with students at UCM about the injustices he faced and to share his story as the keynote speaker for Unity Week. Unity Week is designed to create awareness of social justice topics and unite the campus as well as celebrate the diversity in our UCM community through a week of events, according to a Student Activites news release.

Howard was convicted in 1993 for a double homicide of a mother and daughter in North Carolina.

“When I first got convicted I didn’t believe it. I didn’t even believe they could do that.” Howard said. “I was like anybody

else, that lie ain’t gone stand, but it did.

The judge gave me 80 years. I had 120 at first but they ran one-fourth concurrent and that left me with 80 years in prison. I was devastated.”

However, he was not alone in this journey. His wife was there all of his 24 years incarcerated and visited him every week.

His wife sent him letters, cards and even called on multiple phones at one time to get through and schedule her visit every week.

“I actually watched the man that I think committed the crime walk in the courtroom and plead the fifth and walk out,” he said.“That was hard for me.”

Howard spent much of his time incarcerated researching how to get out with no money. He had little trust in prison lawyers but then he and his wife learned about the Innocence Project.

“I found out there was such thing as the Innocence Project, and it was at most of the major universities in the United States,” he said. “So me and my wife wrote the letter HOWARD, continued on Page 12

‘August: Osage County’: A great production of a troubling story Ryan Sheehan For the Muleskinner

“August: Osage County” was the theatre department’s latest production and it was an ambitious one. Written by Tracy Letts, the play takes place in Oklahoma in 2007 when it was written, and is a drama/comedy following the dysfunctional Weston family. After the father goes missing, the Weston family gather to deal with the situation, but as secrets are revealed, the family gathering takes a turn for the worst.

The production was fantastic. It is an ambitious adaptation, considering the complexity of the set, quality of the cast required and the subject matter itself. The acting was great, regardless of the role. The set built for the play was a serious undertaking, practically becoming a full building for the production. The makeup was

good considering how the production had to overcome some potential problems with the age of the characters. And the choreography was impressive. There are sequences where 10 to 12 people are on stage, sometimes all talking at once, and yet you know where everyone is and what they’re saying.

It’s almost like a movie with an ensemble cast, only during these scenes there’s no cutting back and forth between the characters. You watch it play out at the same time.

The drawback of the play is something that the cast or crew couldn’t control and that would be the play itself. Despite having some great moments, the plot and the pacing create a flawed story.

The first two acts of “Osage County” feel balanced, but certain aspects of the final act ruin it. To fully explain why, first, one has to consider the tone of the play.

It is a dramedy: part drama, part comedy.

You might laugh and you might cry. And

the play achieves that. There are some funny moments and then there are moments that get you choked up. There were scenes where I had to look away because I couldn’t handle the family drama. It felt too real.

But the final act didn’t work with the rest of the play. The first two acts were balanced in the sense that they established the tone for the rest of the play. There is more drama than comedy, but that’s not meant as a criticism. It felt natural for the tone that the play was going for. In one instance a family member might say something serious and hurtful to another, and a few moments later a different family member cracks a funny joke and everyone laughs, just like in a real family. And the third act didn’t match that.

There is a big shift in tone in the third act.

Despite this shift being intentional, purposely changing the story, it doesn’t work.

Everything seems to just go wrong in every

possible way. There’s barely any comedy and the main character has an emotional arc that didn’t feel natural. There are some satisfying moments in the third act, like the ending, but it mainly didn’t work.

“August: Osage County” is not a bad play. It is worth seeing. If you haven’t already and you have an opportunity to go out and see it, you should. At least to give it a try.

Again, this is meant to be a critique of the story, the little book you memorize your lines from, and not the production itself. The theatre production of the play was fantastic.

It’s a shame I felt the play itself was flawed because it somewhat distracted me from fully appreciating all the hard work and talent that went into this production.

Excluding the story, “August: Osage County” is one of the best theatrical productions I’ve seen performed on campus.

Repeated listens demanded: The case for challenging records Listening to Xiu Xiu for the first time is like stepping into the shower after setting the heat too high. Every inch of you, from your shins to your shoulders, wants you to leave. You might feel it in your chest, a pressure forcing the air out of your lungs, blocking any more from getting in. Just as you begin thinking you can’t bear it anymore, you realize you don’t need to. It no longer hurts. Your skin is crimson, but you’re the most relaxed you’ll be for the rest of the day.

“Girl With Basket of Fruit” marks Xiu Xiu’s 11th studio album, and it’s undeniably their darkest. The record is the auditory equivalent of a horror movie, with tribal drum patterns that build incredible tension, and surreal ambient passages that leave you anxiously awaiting the next terrifying motif. It’s a record that thrives on anxiety; the songs themselves were borne from it and they incite it in their listeners.

This anxious energy is what propels the listener through “Girl With Basket of Fruit.” Each of the nine tracks brings something to the table and given enough space I could praise them each ad nauseam. The title track, for instance, is a fantastic start

vocals. Even without understanding what’s being said, everything works together to create one of the most gripping tracks on a record full of them.

“Mary Turner Mary Turner” is both the most disturbing song on the record and also the most powerful. It tells the story of Mary Turner, a pregnant woman who was lynched in Georgia in 1918. She and her unborn child were murdered shortly after she spoke out publicly against the lynching of her husband. I won’t detail the terrible things that happened to her in this review, but it was an unfathomably horrific incident and this song stays very true to that.

Understanding this event, and the other subject matter that informs “Girl With Basket of Fruit,” is integral to getting the full experience from it.

Much of the imagery in “Girl With Bas-

ket of Fruit” has been explained to some small extent by Stewart in a piece he did for Talkhouse. In the piece, he describes the album as being the “internal effects of internal events: reactions to and explorations of other peoples’ texts.” That is to say, the band created sounds and moods and lyrics from what they were seeing in other artists’ work. I encourage listeners to follow along with this piece as they listen, to have those images fresh in their minds, and to create your own thoughts and feelings and meanings behind them.

“Girl With Basket of Fruit” is an incredibly challenging listen. It is sad, noisy, disturbing and it is certainly not for everyone (or even most people). Sometimes, though, we need our art to be challenging. Even when the world around us is difficult, we need art that holds us down and rubs our noses in the filth around us. Then, when the last note plays and we lift ourselves up, we can be that much stronger for it.

10/10 - Repeated listens are not only warranted but demanded. Among the best albums of the decade.

Jakob Lowrance is the first player to play four years under head coach Doug Karleskint for the Mules. He has averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game despite missing seven games early in the season due to injury. Lowrance joined a select group of Mules to score 1,000 points and is top-5 all-time in blocked shots.

Tyler Long: Senior sports management major. Long has been a student manager with the team for three seasons.

Long is a graduate of Warrensburg High School and said he has been a Mules fan for his entire life.

Jafar Kinsey: Mules graduate transfer.

Kinsey joined the team last summer after graduating from North Dakota University. He has averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game this season.

Kinsey’s late-game heroics have won two games for the Mules as he hit buzzer-beaters against Emporia State and Missouri Western.

Paige Redmond: Senior guard. Redmond has averaged 16 points a game in her full three years of starting for the Jennies. At 1,625 career points, Redmond is just nine points away from becoming the fifth highest all-time scorer in Jennies history. She is a first-team All-American, NCAA Elite Eight MVP and MIAA Player of the Year.

Sydney Crockett: Senior guard. Crockett has averaged six points and two rebounds per game in her four-year career with the Jennies. In the Jennies national title run last season, Crockett came off the bench and went 3-4 with eight points in the final four win over Union.

A 24-point performance from senior guard Paige Redmond gave the Jennies (20-5, 13-4 MIAA) their third straight 20win season against Missouri Western (1214, 7-10 MIAA) 86-66 Saturday.

Redmond was one of three Jennies honored in the pregame ceremony that also included senior guard Sydney Crockett and team manager Kennedi Dorrell.

The Jennies trailed early in the first quarter but never looked back after breaking a 16-16 tie in the final minutes of the first frame. The trio of Redmond, and junior forwards Megan Skaggs and Morgan Fleming combined for the Jennies first 20 points of the game to lead 23-18 going into the second quarter.

The lead continued to grow, eventually reaching double-digits. The Jennies were able to sustain that lead for the remainder of the game, only allowing the Griffons to get within 11 points on a few occasions in the second half.

Redmond supplemented her game-high in points with five rebounds and a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. Skaggs was right behind her with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists. Fleming finished with 16 points and six assists. Crockett overcame a slow start to put up 12 points on 2-3 three-point shooting. She also pulled down four offensive rebounds in her final game in the Multipurpose Building.

The Jennies are set to conclude the regular season this week with road contests against Lindenwood (19-5, 13-4 MIAA) and Lincoln (10-16, 2-15 MIAA).

The Jennies played Lindenwood Wednesday at Robert F. Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Missouri. The Jennies matchup with Lincoln is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday at Jason Gym in Jefferson City, Missouri.

In a span of seven days, Mules basketball (14-12, 7-10 MIAA) picked up two thrilling three-point wins over Missouri Western (12-16, 6-11 MIAA).

The first came Feb. 16 in St. Joseph where guard Jafar Kinsey hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to break a 56-56 tie and give the Mules the win. A week later, it was senior day and Kinsey was honored during a pregame ceremony along with senior forward Jakob Lowrance and team manager Tyler Long.

The Mules prevailed 69-66 Saturday on a go-ahead layup from sophomore guard Daniel Farris that was preceded by two straight three-pointers from junior guard MattWilkinson.

Their offensive efforts erased a seven-point deficit and gave the Mules their first lead since they led by one with six minutes remaining.

The Mules built a double-digit lead in the first half after going on a 12-0 run that broke the 16-16 tie and resulted in a 36-25 halftime lead.

The Griffons adjusted during the break and slowly reduced the Mules lead and eventually took it. The two teams spent the final 10 minutes trading blows and switching leads until the Mules pulled away in the final three minutes.

Lowrance led the Mules with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. He also shot 2-4 from three-point range. Wilkinson finished with 12 points and six rebounds while going 3-4 from deep.

Kinsey scored 10 in his final game at the Multipurpose Building and went 6-8 on free throws.

The Mules are set to finish the regular season on the road and attempt to clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament. In the final week, they are scheduled to face Linden-

wood (14-15, 7-10 MIAA) and Lincoln (16-10, 9-8 MIAA). The Mules played Lindenwood Wednesday at Robert F. Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.

The final game of the regular season against Lincoln is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jason Gym in Jefferson City, Missouri.

The Mules and Jennies will have a weekend off to prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The two-day event is scheduled for March 8 and 9 at the Robert Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Jennies bowling bounced back from its 10th-place finish two weeks ago with their first tournament win of the season at the Augustana College Vikings Classic Friday-Sunday in Milan, Illinois.

The Jennies went 8-2 over the first two days of the event, which consisted of Baker and traditional matches. The Jennies dropped just one game in the three rounds of the championship bracket. A clean sweep of Elmhurst, a 4-1 win over Aurora University and a sweep of Lewis secured first place.

Sophomore Paytynn Kuhns took the individual title with a 216.8 average. The next closest competitor averaged 193.6.

Sophomore Tatum Ruffalo finished in sixth place with a 187.2 average.

Next up for the Jennies is the Big Red Classic. The three-day event is scheduled to run Friday-Sunday at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mules baseball improved to 8-5 on the season with a 12-5 win over Truman State Tuesday at Crane Field/Tompkins Stadium.

The Mules got on the board early and often with three runs in each of the first two innings and led 6-0 before the Bulldogs got their first hit.

The Mules three runs in the first all came by way of walks and errors as the Bulldogs allowed no hits. The Mules cruised from there and added six more runs throughout the remaining seven innings.

Outfielder Mason Janvrin went 3-4 in the leadoff spot. He knocked in three RBIs and stole two bases. Shortstop Harrison Schnurbusch went 2-2 with three RBIs and drew three walks. Second baseman Donovan Ditto went 2-2 and was hit twice by Bulldog pitches.

The Mules (8-5, 2-1 MIAA) will return to conference competition with a weekend series at home against Northeastern State (2-12, 1-2 MIAA).

Due to inclement weather in the weekend forecast, the series has been moved to Thursday and Friday At Crane Stadium/ Tompkins Field.

It has not been determined which day will feature a doubleheader. Thursday’s game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and first pitch for Friday is scheduled for noon.

Mules win MIAA Championship UCM’s indoor track and field teams competed at the MIAA Championships over the weekend in Maryville, Missouri. The Mules captured their 21st indoor conference championship, giving them the most in the MIAA. The Jennies finished in fifth with 54 points.

The Muleskinner AIRPORT, continued from Page 1 “The new airport facility would house our flight school,” Hunt said, “which is kind of the epicenter of our professional pilot degree program and the flight operations management degree program.”

Hunt said priority will go toward moving the flight school from its current location in Hangar 3 to a permanent building to adequately fit the needs of students. He said a new structure will provide private space for flight instructors to meet with students for briefing and debriefing. The new building will also create space for the chief scheduler and financial specialists to work.

“Priority one is the student,” Hunt said, “the student experience at the airport, to get them the adequate learning space they need to succeed.”

Hunt said he would like to see a classroom area constructed as well as a break area for guests.

Another priority in the project is updating the fixed base operation.

“Also, there’s the idea of the FBO — fixed base operation,” Hunt said, “the terminal, if you will, where people flying in can potentially rent a car, order fuel, schedule maintenance, schedule tie-down or rent a hangar for the short term.”

Hunt said he does not expect construction of the new facility to affect airport operation.

Conner Albrecht, a senior professional pilot major, said he is excited for the new facility.

“I think it’s really important,” he said.

“We really have outgrown the facilities we have now. I think it’s just the next step.”

Hunt said the flight school has operated out of hangar 3 since the old terminal was demolished in early 2017.

Albrecht said the upgrades at the airport will also help generate and maintain interest in flying.

“I think having some nicer facilities would just have students more excited

about flying and dreading it a little less,” he said. “I think it’ll bring some much-needed excitement to the program.”

In addition to the new main facility, Hunt said space has been set aside to construct three new banks of hangars. He said there is currently a waiting list for available hangar space.

According to a news release, the terminal/flight school building project is the beginning of phase two at Skyhaven. Dan Dietz, airport manager, said an ongoing $7 million project to resurface the runways and taxiways is phase one. The project was partially funded by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Missouri Department of Transportation. Dietz said parts of the runway and taxiways were unable to be rebuilt completely due to natural gas pipelines in the area.

The UCM is the only public university in Missouri to own and operate a general aviation airport, according to a news release.

The Sunderland Foundation was established by Lester T. Sunderland in 1945 to fund construction projects in the Kansas City region, according to a news release.

“One of our key funding areas is higher education and specifically brick-and-mortar projects for new or improved facilities,” Kent Sunderland, president of the Sunderland Foundation, said in a news release. “As a pilot myself, I understand how valuable UCM’s airport is to both the university and the larger community. We are happy to support this renowned School of Aviation’s growth and preserve its legacy through renovations that reflect our foundation’s commitment to constructing a better quality of life from the ground up.”

Most of Howard’s responses were letters of rejection because he was not in their area of service.

A university in North Carolina finally took on his case, and then the Innocence Project of New York University took over Howard’s case.

“It took them 14 years to get me out of prison from the day they took my case” he said. “My lawyer was Barry Schecks. He called me one day and was like, ‘I’mma get you out.’...every time I relive this it bothers me...y’all will have to excuse me sometimes this is very emotional for me but it’s something that has to be done” he said.

NYU took on his case and had several members working on the details of getting Howard out of prison and proven innocent.

“I wanted to find someone who has a story that could actually connect on a deeper level.”

Howard explained during his speech how shocked he was that so many people he never met were so dedicated to his freedom.

He was released from prison in 2017 after serving 24 years of an 80-year sentence. Exonerated shortly after his release after being proven innocent by DNA testing technology at the.

This event was organized by Cole Fine, the coordinator for the American Democ-

racy Project, and Shari Bax, UCM head coordinator for the American Democracy project.

In the process of coordinating the event, Fine said he wanted to bring someone with a powerful message.

“I wanted to find someone who has a story that could actually connect on a deeper level than just the motivational speaker who says, ‘stay in school’ and stuff, Fine said.

“I thought this was a really good and creative way to get outside the box.”

The criminal justice program here at UCM as well as the political science program are working together with the Midwest Innocence Project. They came out that night to help anyone who may have a family member experiencing what Darryl Howard has gone through.

speech where the room fell silent. I put down my camera and notebook and just began to think. Darryl’s story and strength is beyond that of any individual I have met in my entire life thus far. I admire his strength, his story and emotion has motivated me in many ways to take action in my community it also highlighted the injustices that he has faced and that of others who may still be in prison.

Howard now dedicates his time to traveling to universities to share his story as well as helping other inmates integrate back in society after being released through The Darryl Howard Organization. He strives to unite inmates in prison with their children and loved ones in honor of losing his son from a drug overdose while he spent years in prison for something he did not do.
