NEED TO KNOW ‘Not Waving’ Opening night to be performed in Black Box Theatre

The Department of Theatre and Dance at UCM is scheduled to present the mainstage show “Not Waving” at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Black Box Theatre in Nickerson Hall.

General admission to the production cost $7 and can be purchased at the Highlander Theatre Box Office Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or online at ucmo.edu/theatre/calendar.

“Not Waving” is the story of Crandal, a quirky, insecure young girl who is having trouble fitting in. She struggles to find friends while dealing with the realization that her grandmother and best friend, Nanna, is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Crandal uses poetry as an outlet to express herself and stand on her own.

“Not Waving” is directed by senior Bachelor of Science in Education theater major Dalton Pittenger.

Holiday Parade scheduled

The Downtown Warrensburg Holiday Parade is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1.

The parade is scheduled to start in the parking lot at the corner of South and Holden streets on the University of Central Missouri campus and will move north on Holden Street through the downtown area and end at West Market and Maynard streets.

Presiding County Commissioner William Gabel and Mayor Bryan Jacobs will then conduct the celebratory lighting of the 20-foot Christmas tree located on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn.

Dewayne Jackson, owner of Jaeger Tire in Warrensburg, is the primary coordinator and is working with local organizations such as the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, Warrensburg Main Street, and Big Brothers Big Sisters to host the event.

Board members serving expired terms feel sense of duty

The UCM board of governors currently has three board members sitting in expired terms.

Monica Huffman, the assistant secretary to the board, said the members – Walt Hicklin, Weldon Brady and Gus Wetzel II – continue to serve until a replacement is appointed.

“For us, we have board members that are willing, fortunately, to continue to serve,” Huffman said. “Some of their terms expired under Governor Nixon’s time and he had not made any appointments to replace some of them.”

The board of governors consists of eight total members, according to the board’s

bylaws. The terms for the governors is six years long. The student governor position lasts for two years.

Hicklin’s term expired Jan. 1, 2013, but he voluntarily serves.

“The university has done so much for me that I feel like I owe something to it,” Hicklin said. “I want to give back. I take pride in this place.”

The board members are appointed through the Missouri governor’s office.

Wetzel’s term expired Jan. 1, 2017 and Brady’s term expired Jan. 1, 2012.

Wetzel, the board president, said the board makes decisions on anything from student concerns to personnel at the university.

For example, the board recently appointed Roger Best to serve as the executive vice president and chief operating

officer. The board also appointed Mike Godard as the interim provost-chief learning officer, replacing Deborah Curtis who was recently named president of Indiana State University.

Huffman has served as assistant secretary to the board as well as executive assistant to the president for the past 18 years.

“I’m appointed custodian of records by the board, so when we get requests for the Missouri Sunshine Law, those come to me, and then I work to ensure that we’re responding according to the law,” she said.

“If it is information that we should be releasing as public information, I work with staff members to obtain that information and get it to the person who requested it.”

She has seen many different board members while serving for the university.

“The job provides the opportunity to

work with different people,” Huffman said. “They have a genuine interest for the university.”

Huffman said her job is important and she enjoys the work she does with the board members.

“I just like being able to help the board,” she said. “They have a very important job, so I like being able to help them and get them what they need in order to make informed decisions when things come before them.”

Wetzel said he enjoys being on the board because he realizes the value of UCM. He said the other board members show they care about the university at each meeting.

“The board of governors has the heart of UCM in mind,” he said. “It’s a hard-working group that has the interest of UCM in mind.”

Campus Cupboard thrives with help from the local, campus community

Four years after opening, the Campus Cupboard food pantry at the University of Central Missouri continues to provide food for hundreds of students, faculty and staff members who need a little assistance.

Campus Cupboard is located in the lower level of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and has grown with the help of the local community, Sodexo, and food banks in the Kansas City area that donate daily to the campus food pantry.

With the help of many organizations, the pantry has served nearly 6,000 people since it opened.

Campus Cupboard opened Oct. 10, 2013, with initial funding through a

$5,000 UCM Foundation Opportunity Grant. The donation helped pay for cleaning, shelving, canned food items, technology and extra refrigerators.

The UCM Student Government Association allocated $2,000 during the spring 2013 semester to assist with the opening of the facility and has made a commitment of $1,000 per semester to sustain the operation, according to a UCM news release.

“During the second full year of operation, more than 1,000 individuals were served in 2015. That number grew to more than 2,600 individuals, with more than 2,000 served during the first six months of 2016,” said Beth Rutt, director of Student Activities.

She said donations come from student organizations on campus, civic clubs in Warrensburg and alumni. They purchase

MILITARY CHALLENGE COINS: A PRICELESS UNOFFICIAL TRADITION CUPBOARD, continued from page 3 food from the Harvesters food bank in Kansas City.

“I can purchase items from them usually for around 43 cents on the dollar,” Rutt said. “We also have food we pick up from Walmart and Aldi every week,” Rutt said.

Volunteers can sign up by contacting Trish Smith, the graduate assistant in charge of managing activities, donations and volunteers for the Campus Cupboard.

“The majority of our food recovery comes from Sodexo,” Rutt said. “We pick up each night from Ellis and Todd dining halls the food that has not been served and bring it back to the pantry where it is repackaged into single servings.”

Smaller on-campus vendors, such as Einstein Bros. Bagels, Starbucks, and SPIN! Pizza also have made contributions to the Campus Cupboard.

Rutt said finding donations has not been too difficult.

“I have never asked anyone and been told no,” she said. “Our community and businesses are very generous and very student supportive.”

Bill Burgess places 20-30 challenge coins on a table in the Military and Veterans Success Center, earned over the course of his 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force.

A few minutes later, Dusty Storms, also a veteran of the United States Air Force, noticed Burgess’ coins on the table, pulled up a chair, and pulled out two coins he kept with him in his wallet.

Shortly after that, Denver Todd, another Air Force veteran, stopped by our table and pulled a coin out of his wallet.

The coins themselves were interesting – all varied in size, weight and design.

But it was the immediate recognition of and the interactions that came out of those coins that made them truly incredible. Each one had its own significance to the man who had it, and there is a story attached to each one.

There is some debate about the exact origin of the tradition behind the military challenge coins. According to this post from Katie Lange on behalf of the Department of Defense, two possibilities are World War I and the Vietnam War. Northwest Territorial Mint says the tradition, as it is recognized today, can be traced to World War II, though earlier versions of this tradition are believed to date back to the Civil War. That tradition has gained more veneration now, attracting collectors from

both military and civilian backgrounds.

In 2006, Jesse Medford, an Iraq War veteran, established the Challenge Coin Association upon his return home from combat.

There are variations on how the challenge works, but, generally speaking, a challenge is issued when one person displays their coin. If the person being challenged does not have a coin to display, there is a penalty; often times they must buy the challenger a drink.

There is something of a hierarchy involved as well. If a person is challenged and displays a coin they’ve earned from someone of a higher rank or is otherwise of a certain esteem, the challenger is now on the hook for a drink.

There doesn’t have to be a penalty; simply winning a challenge is sometimes its own reward.

Burgess, an airplane mechanic, was coined

by Vice President Dick Cheney after his unit repaired Air Force 2 so quickly Cheney didn’t realize the plane was being delayed.

It would be difficult for someone to produce a coin from a higher-ranking individual than the Vice President of the United States, and that was something Jeff Huffman, a veteran of the United States Air Force and the director of the Office of Military and

Veteran Services, was sure to point out to both of us when he told me, and reminded Burgess, that he’d been coined

by President Barack Obama.

One of the coins Storms had with him came from Lt. Col. Kevin Henry.

Henry carried that coin with him on every mission he flew. At the time Storms reenlisted, Henry was retiring.

As a token of the respect they had for each other, grown over the time their careers overlapped, Henry presented Storms with that coin.

In Huffman’s office is the best visual representation of what these coins represent to the people who have earned them.

An entire shelf on a bookcase is devoted to the coins he has accumulated, and each one is displayed so it is visible and accessible.

On a table in the corner of his office, in a box under a pile of files and papers, is his diploma.

“I’ve got the space for it,” he said, looking at the wall above his computer. “I guess one of these days I’ll hang it up.”

A saxophone sat in the front corner of Vernon Percy “VP” Howard III’s living room, catching the rays of the autumn sun setting as shadows danced across his walls.

Papers lined his counters with lyrics he had yet to complete, scribbled up with asterisks, doodles and lines he had either crossed out or erased to make room for better phrases.

VP sat in a recliner across the room, his laptop on his lap, headphones in his ears and his feet propped up the coffee table he had a concentration that could not be broken.

VP is a junior digital media production major and traces his love for music to his time growing up in St. Mark Union Church in Kansas City, Missouri., where his dad was the pastor and his mom was a Sunday school teacher.

Self-taught, VP began playing the piano at the age of 3 and began singing in the choir by the age of 5.

He said playing music for the church members was a platform that soon became an opportunity to experiment with different instruments and vocal styles.

“The church gave VP a safe platform to share his art, and it allowed me to brag on my son without having to do so verbally,” said Vernon Percy Howard II. Into his adolescent years, his father said he saw the potential in his son's

musical capabilities and took him shopping for his first instrument.

“I remember reaching for the cymbals,” VP said. “I was fascinated by their simplicity and the sounds they were able to create by smashing together two items.”

He said his father did not approve, saying he was going to play a real instrument and pointed him to the saxophones. VP said he didn't consider himself an artist at the time, but he acknowledged the power of music because of the emotion it evokes in people.

For years VP, would play under the direction of his father and the choir. VP said he wanted to explore other genres besides Christian varieties. He said he would secretly play the tunes of

Kenny G while his parents were away.

VP said he always did as he was told and learned the music by the books. He said experimenting became a distant thought as his father wanted him to take his art seriously.

Starting college at the University of Central Missouri in the fall of 2016, he said his goal was to find a new platform in which he could share his music while pursuing a degree in the arts. “ T h e professors at UCM genuinely want me to do well in school and with my music career,” VP said. “Professor Stephen Price, gave me a tour of the digital media labs and introduced me to the

program when I had my visit at UCM. He was also one of the first professors who took a serious interest in VP the student as well as VP the artist.”

Since enrolling at the University of Central Missouri, VP has worked to master his craft. Early this year, VP3 busked at local bars, networked with musicians in the area, scored some gigs throughout mid-Missouri, has been featured in local media and increased his online presence by starting a YouTube channel and Facebook page devoted to his music.

“I have collaborated with VP on a couple of tracks now and every experience he is able to bring a different melody to play,” said Isaac Barkley, sophomore music technology major.

Audiences are captivated by his dynamic saxophone styles, harmonized with his vocals. VP is continually fueled by feedback, often filling his school textbooks with notes of areas to improve in.

“VP is always striving to perfect his craft with the sole idea that he is his biggest competition in mind,” Barkley said.

After graduating in May 2019, VP said he wants to become an artist and producer so he can find hidden talent throughout the country.

“Music is one of the most powerful languages on the planet,” VP said. “You don’t need words for it to make an impact.

When I am playing my saxophone, I often close my eyes and feel the beat. If I can make just one person feel the beat as well, then I know I am doing my job. I hope that I can inspire hundreds through the power of music.”

I honestly don’t think the protest will end any time soon and we hope for the best of it. What I learned after these results is that doesn’t really matter who’s right or wrong because everyone has different perspectives on how they view things.

NFL protests analysis:

The matters of kneeling and protesting the flag have dominated news coverage for wha for media coverage and not just for football. Players taking a stand but rather taking a k some may face. My personal belief is that they should not be doing it. Many people do take that behavior to be disrespectful to the flag, to the country, and to those who defend the country.

This began (with Colin Kaepernick) as a protest against how blacks are treated in America.

I believe that there are better avenues of protest that can accomplish the same end result without offending so many people who have nothing to do with the problem. I also see an issue in that many NFL players who are kneeling during the national anthem don’t have any idea why they are doing it (many don’t know what Kaepernick’s original reason was) and are just doing it because their teammates are doing it.

What legal grounds do they have in order to continue to protest?

Under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, every American has freedom of speech rights against state action (i.e., action by the federal government). By way of the Fourteenth Amendment, that protection is also provided against state action by state and local governments. The Fourteenth Amendment says that states cannot take away rights protected by the federal government.

What this essentially means is that when our fundamental rights, such as freedom of speech, are impaired by federal, state or local governments, we have a right to redress our grievances that is protected through due process provided by the Fifth Amendment (federal government) and the Fourteenth Amendment (state and

local governments). Regarding the situation at hand, we are seeing protests that are generally being made in a public area, i.e., owned or subsidized by a governmental unit.

Most NFL stadiums are tax-payer financed and controlled by a governmental agency (for example, the Truman Sports Complex is financed approximately 25 percent by the Chiefs and Royals organizations and 75 percent by the taxpayers of Jackson County, represented by the Jackson County Sports Authority). These protests, while occurring on public property, are afforded constitutional protection under the First Amendment.

However, if a stadium is privately-financed, it is not public property, and protection of free speech does not exist. Currently only one NFL stadium is privately-financed: MetLife Stadium, home of the Giants and Jets, was built at a cost of $1.6 billion, all paid by private sources. The new Inglewood Stadium, home of the LA Rams and set to open in 2019, is 100 percent financed by billionaire Stan Kroenke. In these buildings, the Constitution offers no protection for protesting players.

Could there be a less controversial way of getting media attention without kneeling?

Many NFL owners, including Clark Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs, have suggested a more affirmative approach – going out into the community and working with local leaders in addressing situations of racial inequity. This can also be expanded into addressing all forms of discrimination against all types of minorities.

to “benching” them for part of the game. The bottom line is that most NFL owners do not want to worsen the relations with their players, particularly star players. And it certainly makes no sense in terms of finances or competition to fire your star players. The players are being looked at by much of the public as a bunch of coddled millionaires who do not have to deal with racial inequity (which is an oversimplification when they are doing it for their family or friends, or when they truly do want to help society).

The owners are being looked at as ineffectual: They seem to want to do nothing to stop it, creating a scenario described by Houston Texans owner Bob McNair as “the inmates are running the prison.”

Should the owners exercise control and discretion over their players?

The owners aggravated the situation by doing nothing during the 2016 NFL season, when the problem first appeared. They could have exercised their rights as employers by requiring players to stand for the national anthem, or by telling them to stay in the locker room until after the anthem is played, if they felt “offended” by it (and teams generally did stay in their locker rooms until the anthem had been played prior to 9/11.

Does the matter of free speech become a negative or positive connotation for the players and anyone involved?

It depends on one’s knowledge of the Constitution (probably not a large group!). If you do not understand that freedom of speech rights occur only in certain situations (and certainly not in a private setting), and if you don’t realize that you can exercise your free speech rights in a public setting, be protected from governmental action, and still have consequences (being sued for defamation, being terminated by an employer), the matter becomes a positive for players, because many will look at the situation as the players being oppressed by not being able to freely express themselves.

From the same perspective, the NFL and its owners will be put in a negative light as the “oppressors.” On the other hand, there are also many (those who are no longer watching or attending NFL games because of this situation) who would applaud the owners for forcing the players to stand.

Maybe the best tact for the NFL to take would be to construct a rule requiring the team to stand for the national anthem, then working with players on addressing matters of racial inequality in a more effective, grass-roots manner.

This would separate players who truly have an issue from those who are simply “grand-standing” for publicity.

Free speech & contracts

Free speech in relation to contract laws, regardless of the contract, ultimately comes down to three things: what was said, what is the employer’s views and lastly is the business private or public.

Private sector does not view First Amendment rights as always applicable. Possibly due to the chance that volatile information can be released under the guise of free speech. Such as company trade secrets. However, an individual can be protected by anti-discrimination laws in the private

workplace. Such as being discriminated against because of race, religion or sexuality.

In the public sector, the First Amendment has more leeway. There are three things that are considered to determine if an employee in the public sector is protected under the first amendment.

•Is the employee speaking as a citizen or as an employee? This makes the difference between saying you agree with something personally, and saying those who you work for have the same

view.

•Is the message of public concern? If the speech is directed internally within their employment, then it is not normally protected under the First Amendment unless anti-discrimination laws are involved. There is a difference between saying your boss is horrible and your boss is racist on social media.

•The message must be overly disruptive for the employer. Out of the three this one has the most variables and is case by case.

A Review:

‘Justice League’

“Justice League” marks the fifth film in the DC Cinematic Universe. This movie acts as “The Avengers” did for Marvel, giving a chance for several different superheroes to team up on screen. Here, the newly formed group of heroes must battle a new threat to the world. They must also battle their greatest nemesis: Rotten Tomatoes. The website is well-known for giving bad reviews of the latest DC movies, giving “Justice League” a 26 percent approval rating.

Many don’t view “Justice League” as being a bad movie. In fact, this film has divided some moviegoers on its true quality. This superhero movie is divisive, which is apparently the only kind of superhero movie Zach Snyder knows how to make. If you would like other examples, look up reviews for “Watchmen,” “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

“Justice League” is not perfect, but it’s not a bad movie. There are plenty of positive aspects that make the film entertaining. Unlike “Batman v Superman” and other DC movies, it didn’t feel boring. Even at the worst of times, I never felt the urge to leave the theater.

The movie is filled with epic action scenes.

These are moments when every superhero fights side-by-side. It was satisfying to see all of the heroes interact with each other. Overtime, they begin to form an enjoyable chemistry.

As stated before, “Justice League” is not perfect. Its flaws can be distracting, especially the pacing. Due to problems off-screen, several scenes had to be reshot. These were not done by Snyder, but by Joss Whedon acting as a replacement. Both directors have very different styles: Synder tends to be more dark, and Whedon tends to be more lighthearted.

These different styles can be felt in the movie. Some moments are dramatic and brooding, while others are humorous and fun. On occasion it feels like watching two different movies, though not as a whole. The movie’s ILLUSTRATION BY ANNA MCDONALD / ILLUSTRATOR

humor doesn’t always work, but sometimes it does.

The problem with many recent superhero movies is that they have a mediocre villain.

“Justice League” is not an exception. Steppenwolf is an alien conqueror, who wants to destroy Earth... and that’s about it. I also found it hard to take him seriously, since there was a rock band that went by the same name. He’s not that interesting. Other characters have weak character development as well, with Cyborg being the main example.

However, some characters do feel properly developed. The Flash/Barry Allan was very satisfying to watch. This version of the superhero also felt much different from the same character on CW’s “The Flash.”

I would suggest having some background knowledge of DC comics before you go see this movie. You don’t have to an expert on the subject or a true comic book fan. It’s just that the movie doesn’t always explain every superhero, or other people. A few quick Google searches might be beneficial to avoid confusion.

Is “Justice League” worth watching? That’s hard to say. It depends on what you want in a movie. Some people could like this movie, some could dislike it and others could view it as “OK.” If a weak story and other film elements distract you too much, this is not the movie for you. If you are willing to ignore those factors and look for enjoyment, then you might like this movie. A similar difference in opinion can be seen in “Batman v Superman,” only much less extreme. Overall, “Justice League” is not better than “Wonder Woman,” yet it is better than the other movies from the DC Cinematic Universe. In truth, it is a good movie with some problems. But then again, “The Avengers” had flaws too. “Justice League” is, for the most part, an improvement for the DC franchise, though it could’ve been of a much higher quality.

‘Star Wars’ The Legacy of the Force

Believe it or not, George Lucas was actually turned down by every studio he approached.

About 40 years ago, an odd film called “Star Wars IV: A New Hope” was released to theaters. Almost overnight, this space opera became a massive hit. It featured ground- breaking special effects, an intriguing story and great characters – Obi-Wan Kenobi is my favorite. The series is now global phenomenon, loved by everyone. Even people who don’t love it pretend they do – fearing to be labeled as a social outcast.

Believe it or not, George Lucas was actually turned down by every studio he approached. They believed his idea to be too expensive and risky. I have no doubt these same executives wish they could go back in time. Lucas was forced to create his own special effects company because none meant his standards. It was worthwhile, for the effects are still impressive to this day.

“Star Wars” has this feeling of being original, but the genius of “Star Wars” is that it’s not original. “Episode IV: A New Hope’ was inspired by the concept of “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell. This is a pattern that appears in most stories featuring a hero. “Star Wars” was also inspired directly from other sources such as Flash Gordon comics, westerns, World War II, old Samurai movies and fairy tales.

The most notable inspiration for “Star Wars” comes from Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurasawa. Much of the plot and characters of “A New Hope” came from Kurasawa’s film, “The Hidden Fortress.”

Note that this is a short list of the inspirations behind “Star Wars” ¬¬– there are many other sources that could’ve been listed.

Fans of “Star Wars” have love/hate feelings toward George Lucas. On one

hand, they love him for creating this amazing franchise. On the other hand, they hate him for what he did with it later on. He made the original trilogy, but he also made the prequel trilogy. He has made some controversial decisions as well, with the Special Additions and selling the franchise to Disney. Along with his greatest mistake, Jar Jar Binks.

The Original Trilogy (“A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”) are considered to be the best adventure movies of all time. The prequel trilogy (“Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” and “Revenge of the Sith”) is considered to be the biggest letdown of all time ¬¬– now this is an over simplification of the franchise.

In truth, the prequels aren’t completely terrible.

The latest entry, “The Force Awakens” is divisive. Some fans like it for being awesome and a huge improvement over the prequels. Others dislike it for being a copy of Episode IV, calling it “A Familiar Hope.” Both sides have good points.

“Rogue One” is technically a spinoff and doesn’t count, which is why there is no title crawl in the beginning – that or they were just being lazy. It’s still a good movie though. Another Star Wars spinoff is “Star Wars: The Clones Wars.”

It was released as an animated film, then adapted into a TV show. It was followed by another TV show, “Star Wars: Rebels.” The animated shows are decent, but could be better.

“Star Wars” are more than just movies. The extended universe of “Star Wars” ranges from comic books, encyclopedias and novels. Video games are another big part, such as: “Knights of the Old Republic,” “The Force Unleashed”

and “The BattleFront” series. Now Disney, the new owner, has labeled most of the extended universe as not cannon, or not officially a part of the “Star Wars” universe. This has angered many fans, myself included. Although I doubt anybody will be upset over the “Star Wars Holiday Special” not being cannon – most pretend that never happened at all.

Another big factor of “Star Wars” is the merchandise. Practically everyone had at least one “Star Wars” toy as a kid.

Fun fact; to fund “The Empire Strike Back,” Lucas just used the profits made from a year of Christmas toy sales. Of course, the merchandise may also be the worst part of “Star Wars.” To quote “Spaceballs,” a satire of “Star Wars,” “Merchandising! Where the real money is made.”

“Star Wars” has one of the biggest fandoms of all time. It’s one of the few fandoms to be mainstream. It has changed movies forever, leaving its mark on the industry. No matter what the future movies do, the originals will always be classics, but I would appreciate it if “Episode 8: The Last Jedi” is not a remake of “Episode 5.” I do not want to watch “The Empire Strikes Back, Again.” On the bright side, I have no doubt it will be better than any of the prequels.

One last thing: could people stop comparing “Star Wars” to “Star Trek”?

Despite having similar titles and popularity, they have nothing really in common. “Star Wars” is based in fantasy and mythology, while “Star Trek” is based in science and exploration. Plus, why does one fandom have to be better than the other? I happen to be a fan of both.

The Jennies’ performance in the NCAA tournament has been nothing short of stout.

Senior goalkeeper, Ana Dilkes has completed two shutouts in tournament play and only allowed one shot past her in the Jennies’ latest match against Grand Valley State. It is worth mentioning that the one goal came on a penalty kick.

“The defense has been playing great, we’ve focused a lot on formations and visual cues which has led to great execution,” Dilkes said.

The Jennies are led by senior forward, Abby Rhodes who has tallied two goals and one assist and redshirt junior forward, Jada Scott who shares the same stat line. Rhodes spoke about the feelings associated with finally reaching the Final Four.

“More than anything we’re excited for the experience. We have a job to do and we know what it is, so from here we have to make sure we execute to our ability and play our game then the results will follow,” said Rhodes.

Head Coach Lewis Theobald is in a position to elevate the Jennies program even further than he has in his now eleventh season at UCM. The Final Four will be held at the Swope Park Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri Nov. 30, with a scheduled 2 p.m. kick off. The location of the semi finals and championship game should work in favor for the Jennies as Kansas City is a short drive from Warrensburg, especially when you consider that Mercy will be traveling from Dobbs Ferry, New York.

A win for the Jennies puts them in the championship game Saturday, Dec. 2, against the winner of UC-Colo. Springs and Carson Newman with a scheduled kickoff at noon.

SPORTS UPDATES UPDATES SPORTS Kylie Hohlen Chosen as D2CCA All-Region Libero Jennies volleyball junior libero Kylie Hohlen was selected to the All-Central Region Team by the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association.

Hohlen, from Roca, Neb., led the Jennies and the MIAA with 6.20 digs per set and was ninth in all of Division II. She also passed out 87 assists and knocked 29 service aces in addition to carrying a 97.2 percent reception

percentage with 515 receptions on 530 attempts.

Hohlen was also selected as the MIAA’s First Team Libero earlier this month, marking her third consecutive year making the All-Conference team. This is her first All-Region award and the Jennies’ first since 2015.

She is the first junior to receive the D2CCA All-Region Award since Carly Sojka and Annie Reilly in 2014.

Jennies Basketball Remains 12th in WBCA Central Missouri Jennies Basketball went 1-0 last week with an 81-30 win against Evangel and this week they remain at No. 12 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Rankings.

The Jennies started the season ranked 13th in the preseason poll, and moved up a spot a week ago to No. 12, after starting the season at 3-1.

The top 5 in the rankings all remain the same from last week. Ashland re-

ceived 24 first-place votes and are ranked first. They are followed, in order,

by Alaska-Anchorage, Bentley, California (PA) and West Texas A&M. The Jennies are the highest ranked MIAA team in the poll. Pittsburg State comes in at No. 19 while Central Oklahoma is 21st. Emporia State, who last week was ranked 22nd, fell out of this week’s rankings.

Spencer Reaves Named MIAA Co-Athlete of the Week For the second time in his career, Mules Basketball senior Spencer Reaves has been named the MIAA Athlete of the Week after his performance in the Mules’ three wins this past week. Reaves was named a Co-Athlete of the Week, sharing the honor with Yashua Trent of Nebraska-Kearney.

The Newark, Ark. native scored 62 points for the week in addition to grabbing 16 rebounds, dishing out six assists and coming up with five steals.

Tuesday against East Central at historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Reaves led the Mules to a win over the in-region rival by scoring a season-high 30 points, going 11-for-17 from the field and grabbing six boards.

He followed that up with another 20+ point performance Friday, putting up 22 on 9-for-13 shooting in a win against Rockhurst. Reaves wrapped up

the week with a 10-point, six-rebound effort in a win against Newman on Saturday.

For the week, Reaves went 22-of-37 (59.5%) from the floor, 6-of-14 (42.9%) from three and sunk 12-of-14 (85.7%) free throw attempts. His final averages for the week come out to 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, two assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

The Mules were victorious in all three wins and are currently riding a four game winning streak. They’ll carry that winning streak into next week when they play their next game at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 against Baker at the Multi.

Fans who bring four canned or nonperishable food items will receive free admission to the game.

Jennies Roll to 78-43 Win over Harris-Stowe No. 12 Central Missouri Jennies Basketball picked up where they left off before the Thanksgiving break, cruising to a 78-43 win over NAIA opponent, Harris-Stowe. The win is the Jennies second in a row and puts them at 5-1 this season.

The Jennies jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead early, kick started by a Jolene Shipps jumper that connected just eight seconds into the game, and the Jens led the rest of the way. HSSU kept it as close as they could, trailing 32-21 at halftime, but the Jens were able to separate themselves in the second half.

The Jens held HSSU to 11 points in each of the final two quarters while scoring 25 of their own in the third. UCM capped off the quarter with a 15-2 run in the final 4:27 to stretch their lead from 12 to 25 and put the game out of reach.

Just about everyone got in on the action once again with all 13 that suited up seeing time on the floor and 12 scoring at least one point. Paige Redmond led the Jens with her first 20-point game of the season putting up a game-high 24 on 9-of-12 shooting including 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

Sydney Crockett chipped in with 11 points as she heated up in the second half with 10, including splashing a pair of triples. Kayonna Lee filled out the

stat sheet with a team leading 14 rebounds, eight points, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Megan Skaggs added eight points as well and hit two three-pointers while blocking two shots on defense. Morgan Fleming scored seven points and dished out two assists with four rebounds.

UCM shot 45.2 percent from the floor going 28-for-62. They hit 10 three-pointers (10-28) and were 12-of-18 at the free throw line. Central Missouri got off to a slow start in the rebounding department, but finished with a plus-six edge. At the half, Harris-Stowe held a 29-21 advantage in the rebound column over UCM. The Jens turned that around to the tune of 26-12 advantage in in half number two including eight on the offensive glass. The Jennies defense was in full effect as the Hornets shot just 24.2 percent (16for-66) from the floor and 10 percent (2-for-20) from three. The Jennies also forced 19 Hornet turnover and blocked five shots. It was far from a perfect game for UCM as they too committed 19 turnovers. The Jens also got into some foul trouble with 15, sending HSSU to the line 16 times.

Central Missouri gets to rest up for a bit. They start MIAA next weekend when they welcome Northwest Missouri to Warrensburg.

It was reported at 1:39 p.m. Nov. 10 that the Johnson County Central Dispatch requested the Warrensburg Fire Department to respond to the 300 block of Christopher Street for a vehicle fire. The vehicle was located in UCM Lot 62. It appeared the fire occurred on top of the battery of the vehicle. It was towed from the parking lot at the owner’s request.

Andrew W. Griggs, 47, was arrested at 11:44 p.m. Nov. 10 on at the intersection of Washington and West King Street on suspicion of driving while suspended and driving the wrong way on a one way.

William A. Doak, 24, was arrested at 1:48 a.m. Nov. 11 near 310 E. Christopher St. on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, open container and improper registration. Doak was arrested after the reporting officer witnessed Doak’s vehicle, a black Chevrolet with expired registration, nearly strike the pedestrian crosswalk marker located at East South Street and the west end of UCM Lot 3.

Jordan R. Medlin, 18, was arrested at 1:02 p.m. Nov. 11 in East Ellis Hall on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Keshon R. Kimball, 23, was arrested at 5:29 p.m. Nov. 11 at The Crossing on suspicion of resisting arrest by fleeing. Police responded to The Crossing in reference to a physical disturbance. The reporting party stated Kimball allegedly punched him in the face twice after he had called the police due to a heated argument between Kimball and his girlfriend. Kimball allegedly fled after officers asked to see his identification. Kimball resisted as an officer attempted to put him into the cage of the patrol car. The reporting party was not injured and did not want medical treatment. Kimball’s girlfriend said she was slapped in the face twice by Kimball but was not injured and currently does not want to pursue domestic assault charges.

Kimball was later arrested at 8:45 p.m.

Nov. 11 on the fourth floor of The Crossing on suspicion of trespassing after allegedly being banned from the building.

Kimball was contacted at 12:09 a.m. Nov. 14 as he exited a convenience store and issued a summons for allegedly assaulting the reporting party in addition to a letter informing him he was banned from UCM property.

It was reported at 8:41 p.m. Nov. 12 that an officer detected the odor of marijuana on the ground floor of Nattinger Hall. The occupants of a room in question were contacted. The individuals stated they had attended an event earlier where marijuana was being smoked. Criminal charges are not currently being pursued.

The incident will be forwarded for university discipline.

Jarron L. Walker, 18, and Starshay A. Williams, 19, were arrested at 8:24 p.m.

Nov 13 on the fourth floor of East Ellis Hall on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. Williams was also arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Ajaysia O. Kindell, 19, and Meleah J. White, 19, were arrested at 8:35 p.m. Nov. 13 on the fifth-floor lobby of Fitzgerald Hall on suspicion of physically fighting in public after officers responded to a fight in progress on the floor.

It was reported at 10:08 p.m. Nov. 14 that dispatch advised of a drug law violation in Ellis Hall. The reporting officer arrived and detected the odor of marijuana in the hall. K9 Echo conducted a sniff test and indicated the presence of narcotic odor coming from a room. No one answered the door when the officer attempted to contact the residents of the room.

The registered occupants were referred for university discipline.

It was reported at 11:27 a.m. Nov. 15 that at approximately 5:15 p.m. Nov. 11, someone witnessed a UCM employee taking food from a refrigerator in the Einstein Bros. Bagels Café in the Student Wellness and Recreation Center after Einstein’s business hours. The employee was identified and is being referred to human resources.

It was reported at 2:42 p.m. Nov. 15 that parking services requested a 2001 Toyota parked in UCM Lot 10 to be towed due to displaying a reported lost/stolen parking permit. Tip Top Towing took custody of the vehicle.

It was reported at 9:08 p.m. Nov. 16 that a well-being check was requested for an intoxicated male in the area of 800 S. Holden St. The reporting party said they had seen a male staggering and learned that he had gone into the Sigma Phi Epsilon house without an invitation. At 9:22 p.m. the male was located unconscious in the hallway outside of Fraternity Complex Unit A. The male had left an official fraternity event intoxicated and was under the age of 21. The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

At 10:10 p.m. Nov. 16 K9 Echo conducted a hall sniff in Nattinger Hall and indicated the presence of narcotic odor coming from a room. The resident said a person who smokes marijuana had borrowed some of her belongings the day before. The resident allowed Echo to search her residence and the K9 did not indicate the presence of narcotic odor in the room.

The individual who borrowed the belongings will be referred for discipline.

It was reported at 10:50 p.m. Nov. 16 that a large group of people were at the gazebo in Selmo Park with a fire. The reporting officer observed the remains of a fire in the outdoor chimney and detected the odor of marijuana. After an investigation, Shanell J. Lawson, 19, was arrested at 10:50 p.m. on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Kent Jr. Reynolds, 23, was arrested at 11:25 p.m. Nov. 16 at 502 S. Main St. on suspicion of driving with a suspended license, improper registration and a warrant out of Callaway County, Missouri for failing to appear for speeding and failing to drive in the right lane. Reynolds was observed travelling in excess of 15 mph over the speed limit at West South and South Main streets.

It was reported at 11:20 a.m. Nov. 17 that a theft had occurred on the second floor of the Wood building. At 11:24 a.m., the reporting officer contacted the victim who stated between 10:00 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Nov. 17 someone took her rose gold

iPhone 7 from the hallway bench just west of room 205.

It was reported at 11:03 p.m. Nov. 18 that an empty camera bag was located on the west side of campus. The camera bag was entered into evidence for safe keeping at Public Safety. The cost of the camera bag is approximately $175.

It was reported at 10:41 a.m. Nov. 20 that between 9:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and 9 a.m. Nov. 20, someone entered Art Center Room 125 and removed a student’s personal speaker from the room. It was determined an individual forcibly entered the Art Center through a window in room 100 Art Center and also damaged the Pepsi vending machine in the hallway near room 100.

It was reported at 11:27 a.m. Nov. 20 that between 4 p.m. Nov. 17 and 10:30 a.m. Nov 20, someone damaged a chair in the sitting area hallway on the fourth floor of The Crossing. None of the other chairs on the floor were damaged or missing.

It was reported at 4:15 a.m. Nov. 26 that between 5 p.m. Nov 17 and 3 p.m. Nov. 26, someone removed a white and grey Schwin bicycle and lock from the bike rack between Walton Stadium and Nickerson Hall.

It was reported at 12:39 p.m. Nov. 27 that a knife was found behind the outfield fence at Crane Stadium. The knife was transported to UCM Public Safety and placed into safe keeping until an owner can be located.

It was reported at 2:59 p.m. Nov. 27 that a vehicle was requested to be towed from UCM Lot 10. Tip Top Towing arrived at 3:09 p.m. to remove the vehicle.

During the inventory, drug paraphernalia was located inside the vehicle. At 3:50 p.m., the owner of the vehicle was contacted at Public Safety and interviewed.

No charges will be pursued at this time.

It was reported at 11:05 p.m. Nov. 28 that the plastic building sign at the main entrance to South Yeater was damaged.

The estimated cost of the sign is $100.
