Ladies Night Out to raise awareness for breast cancer

Ladies will get to have a night out in Warrensburg this week.

The University Health Center and Western Missouri Medical Center are hosting a Ladies’ Night Out event from 5-8 p.m.

Oct. 5 in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom.

Vendors will give hair tutorials, facials, manicures and pedicures. A free leg vein screening will also be offered as well as education about self-breast exams during the event. Those in attendance will be able to schedule mammograms and hear from medical professionals.

Raffles will be drawn throughout the night for various prizes. Appetizers and pink lemonade will be available at the event. There will be an open bar.

The event is free and open to the public, with donations being taken for the WMMC Foundation to benefit the Cancer Center at WMMC.

T-shirts available for THRIVE Day Students in Management 3315 will raise awareness for UCM’s THRIVE program by hosting THRIVE Day Oct. 25 during National Disability Awareness Week.

THRIVE is a two-year post-secondary program that helps young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities have an empowering college experience and become independent, participating members of their communities. Students in the class will be selling t-shirts and polos with the THRIVE emblem. “Mules with capabilities” will be printed in red on the back of the shirts. The t-shirts will be sold for $12 and the polos for $14 each.

The annual Royal Blush Drag Show had it's fifth event at UCM last Thursday, Sept. 28, in Hendricks Hall. The show featured many drag queens such as Omari Collins, a UCM senior theater student.

Drag queen Widow Von'du, Collins, students Alicia Resch and Dajha Adams, said the Royal Blush Drag Show is important to have at UCM to appreciate drag culture, have a better understanding of the culture, promotes self-love, and to enjoy the performances.

AMBROSE IS STAYING AT UCM, No longer candidate at the University of Montana

University of Central Missouri President Chuck Ambrose announced to the Warrensburg community that he is no longer a candidate for the position of president at the University of Montana on Tuesday night.

Ambrose quoted a tweet about the news and confirmed it while also expressing that he is grateful for the opportunity to be in a community that cares about UCM students and the hashtag #StayingintheBurg followed.

“What I've gone through with the University of Montana is a process and it was a positive and good process. Now it's just

time to get future-focused and move on,” Ambrose said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Ambrose said he was encouraged by professional friends of his to engage in a conversation about the president position at the University of Montana.

“This was much more of a focused conversation encouraged by people I trust, and it was the encouragement that came several months ago so I just allowed that conversation to continue,” he said.

Ambrose also said he believed the situation happened as it was supposed to.

“It’s all about fit, so one thing that I communicated to them in the public forum on their campus was the fact that I really do consider that I’ve got one of the best jobs in education and went on to tell them why,” Ambrose said.

He said that many of the challenges that UCM faces are similar to challenges that he would have been tackling at UM. “I wasn’t going to promise more than we could deliver, but many of the challenges are the same. It’s how you address them,” he said.

Ambrose said the experience was positive overall.

“They have a very engaging campus.

I enjoyed the people I met. It was worth having the conversation. At this point in my career, I don't enter thinking about winning and losing, just if there's a real strong demand for what you can bring, you know it will work,” he said.

Ambrose is in his first year of a six-year contract, and said it would have been difficult to leave UCM. “Our campus core and commitment

to student success is really hard to leave here. Its unique; it’s distinct; it’s powerful; it’s a great place to lead.” he said.

“My objective is to serve at a place where I can be effective and they feel like I can take them with momentum forward.”

As far as future goals for UCM, Ambrose said he plans on working to grow enrollment, retention and completion rates with programs such as the 15-to-Finish scholarship.

“We have have solid momentum, especially with undergraduates, and continuing to take that to the next level is going to be really important and that's important to provide the kind of resources that faculty and staff need to make it a good place to work and live,” he said.

LGBTQIA group now available at counseling center

The University of Central Missouri’s counseling center offers a LGBTQIA group for students to explore life challenges.

The counseling center is a safe place on campus where students can go to express concerns that may be affecting their lives.

The LGBTQIA group will present an opportunity for lesbian, gay, bi, trans, pan, non-binary, ace, aro and queer individuals a secure place to discuss personal and social issues.

The center has held private groups before, but never any dedicated to students in the LGBTQIA community.

The group was started during the spring semester of 2014 by Candice Moran, a psychologist who has worked in the counseling center since 2013. Moran had

started similar groups at the University of North Carolina and at the Center on Halsted an LGBT community center in Chicago, Illinois, before coming to UCM. Moran believes that living in rural areas like the Midwest is challenging for people to open-up and express who they really are.

“I’ve had experiences in group throughout my life. It’s hard growing up in areas where you probably don’t know a lot of people or you don’t have those opportunities to connect with people who have similar identities or similar experiences and it can be really isolating”, Moran said.

Her goal is to help students find connections, community, and reduce isolation on campus through this group.

Alex Munoz, one of the LGBT group facilitators, had a similar reason for facilitating the group.

“Mainly my passion for serving and empowering marginalized populations

influenced me to become a facilitator for the LGBTQIA group,” said Munoz, a psychologist who works in UCM’s counseling center. “I also think that many personal close relationships I have or had with family and friends from LGBTQIA backgrounds have influenced my decision.”

To join the group there is a three-step process. First, students should contact the counseling center by email or phone to schedule an appointment. Then each individual must complete an initial consultation during the first appointment. The consultation consists of an application process and a brief discussion with one of the group facilitators. Last, the discussion will help the facilitator determine the best recommendation for the individual.

Recommendations could include mental fitness workshops, the Body U program, downloading apps, or groups like the LGBTQIA group.

A group will form when at least five or

six students have joined. No more than eight students and two facilitators will be assigned to a group. If the group becomes full or if the meeting time conflicts with a student’s schedule there is a waitlist available. All groups are closed and confidential.

Moran said, “We take privacy very important for the students, so Alex and I are bound ethically and legally to hold that confidentiality and we ask students when they join the group to pledge certain guidelines.”

The group will meet 10 times each semester. Meetings will start during the sixth week of the semester; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Old Drum coffeehouse has new owner

The Old Drum Coffeehouse and Bakery held a celebration ceremony for the transferring of owners Friday, September 29.

The coffeehouse and bakery was founded by Beth Weigand Cost in 2012, and she decided to pass down the tradition after five years.

“I started this bakery with my grandmother’s rolling pan. I have to take that one with me, but I got one for you,” said Cost as she passed a wood rolling pan to the bakery’s new owner, Matthew Cowan.

“I’m excited to be moving on. It’s been a long time, but I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone and all the good things about Warrensburg that people don’t know about,” she said, Cowan, a former UCM graduate, bought the business. He earned a degree in biology from the College of Science

and Technology in 2015. He had been an employee of the Old Drum Coffeehouse and Bakery for about 18 months, where he worked 20-30 hours a week. He learned how to operate the behind the scenes of the business, including financial responsibilities and the day-to-day upkeep of the establishment while working there.

The opportunity of owning the shop was presented after Beth mentioned to Cowan she would be selling the shop and moving to St. Joseph, Missouri. This immediately caught his attention, so he asked her if she would be interested in selling the shop to him.

Cowan said he knew this would be the perfect opportunity for him because of his passion for people and coffee. He said although he focused on science in school he has always been interested in the business world and has previously worked with stocks.

“I have a passion for people, and I love to get to know them and hear their stories.

I also love to serve people and show them love by providing them with something

that they enjoy,” said Cowan.

He will continue working in the shop, but instead of Cost, he will be the one getting up at 5 a.m. to start brewing coffee and baking goods. He’s also bringing his friend Nick along with him as his assistant to replace his position.

“I am honored to carry on the legacy that she has laid down for me, and I hope that I make you (Cost) proud and the rest of Warrensburg as I get to continue on with the tradition,” Cowan said as he accepted his new position during the ceremony.

As the shop transitions, Cowan will be making some changes. He will be introducing two new brewing methods called AeroPress and v60 to the coffee shop.

They both are brewing methods used to extract coffee. Cowan described AeroPress as a mixture of French press and expresso which are also other ways of brewing coffee. In addition, he will be introducing a new coffee blend that both he and Nick created. The desserts will stay the same, but they are open to new sug-

gestions from customers. They are also looking to extend their business hours, so that students can have another places to study and do homework.

Tracy Bratner, a frequent customer at the bakery said that she buys dozens of the flourless chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls for her coworkers, and they love them. The flourless cookies are made without flour for customers with allergies, diabetes and or other kinds of health restrictions. All the baked desserts are made from scratch, so customers can place customize orders.

“We’re sad to see Beth go, but we’re looking forward to supporting Matthew,” said Brantner, Johnson County certified economic developer executive director.

The Old Drum Coffeehouse and Bakery offers baked desserts, breakfast burritos, iced coffee, lattes, free Wi-Fi and more.

Three giant metal windows hang from the ceiling in the Highlander Theatre this week. Emily Coffin made them.

Coffin is a carpenter for the scene shop and also plays the role of Vi Moore in the University of Central Missouri Department of Theatre and Dance’s rendition of “Footloose.” Coffin said it took her weeks to finish the metal windows.

“I’m just really proud of them because they took forever,” Coffin said.

Conner Bosworth, who plays Chuck Cranston in “Footloose,” described Coffin as incredibly driven.

“Emily did all of the welding for the show,” Bosworth said. “At least all of the welding for the three giant windows. And it was her first time ever welding and they turned out to look really awesome.”

Coffin said she and the rest of the cast have been preparing for “Footloose” since the first week of classes. She said they have rehearsed from 6 to 10 p.m.

Monday through Friday each week since August, not including the hours the technical crew has worked to build the set.

“The woodshop is open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. every single day and I’m in there most days because I work about 10 hours a week,” Coffin said. “So usually I will stay from two to five so that I can have from five to six to go get dinner and change and get all my stuff together for rehearsal and come back.”

Coffin said keeping everything balanced while working on both the technical and performance side of things can be hard.

“Making sure that I can fully commit to both areas without trying to make one take priority over the other (is challenging) because the show can’t happen without either side,” Coffin said. “So I can’t decide that one is more important than the other.”

Coffin said she first started building sets in high school.

“It was just a thing our high school theatre teacher was very adamant about every actor knowing at least something about doing tech,” Coffin said. “He felt that (shop) was really, really important for us to understand all the work that goes into both sides.”

Coffin said her teacher put her in charge of building a set for a production in high school.

“Then it ended up being something that I just fell in love with and I loved so much and it just stuck,” Coffin said.

Coffin’s love for carpentry led her to work as summer stock for The Ohio Light Opera this past summer.

She said summer stock is when some professional theatres bring in younger artists to be technical workers for their summer productions. She said she worked on a total of seven productions there, most of them operas.

“It was different because there my title was just tech. I did not do any performance or anything, I was just there to be a carpenter and to build,” Coffin said.

“But it was really cool because I got a lot of responsibility that went along with it and I learned so much that summer, not just about tech, but about professional theatre in general and the people there were so nice and so cool and so fun to be around, it was such a good experience.”

Coffin said “Footloose” is the biggest cast she’s had the chance to work with since she came to UCM. “And it’s just been a really cool experience getting to work and bounce ideas off of so many people throughout the entire process both with tech and with the cast and the crew and the directors and everything,” Coffin said. “It’s just been so much fun.”

Coffin said she can’t wait for people to see “Footloose.” The show is at 7:30 p.m. Oct 4-7 in the Highlander Theatre, with the last show Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m.

“It’s everything you really, really love about ‘Footloose’ the movie,” Coffin said. “It’s all of the classic songs ¬ - ‘Holding Out For A Hero’, ‘Let’s Hear it For The Boy,’ it’s all the fun of the movie and it’s got so much heart and so much just passion poured into it from every single person involved.”

PROFESSOR OF MAGIC:

The story of an award-winning poet at UCM

At 6 years old, Jenny Molberg drew a portrait of what she imagined herself to be as an adult. She drew herself in a robe and a hat and labeled the picture “Professor of Magic.”

She feels that picture is not too far off the mark.

“I feel like teaching poetry makes me a professor of magic,” Molberg said.

Teaching poetry was not originally her plan. While pursuing a journalism degree at Louisiana State University, she worked for the school newspaper. That is until she was fired from the paper for asking too many questions.

After trying to cover an injury to Mike the Tiger, the school’s live mascot, the newspaper felt she was pressing too hard and digging too deep, so they let her go.

She laughs about it now.

“I left and took a poetry class, and I never looked back,” she said.

From LSU, she went to American University for her Master of Fine Art degree in poetry, and then to the University of North Texas for her doctorate in English

and creative writing. She applied for over 30 jobs around the country and got hired at UCM in 2015.

Molberg isn’t only a poetry teacher. She is herself a poet. In 2013, she received the Third Coast Poetry Prize for her poem, “Narrative,” and she’s had poems published in literary journals all across the country. Her collection “Marvels of the Invisible” won the Berkshire Prize in 2014 and was published this year.

She said waiting for her book to be published was an interesting experience.

“I waited so long for it to be published,” she said. “While I was waiting, it was building anxiety. What are people going to think? When it was published, the poems were so old. I did a book tour and it was like revisiting my old self.”

Teaching doesn’t distract Molberg from writing, nor does writing detract from her attention to teaching. In fact, she describes the two as having a sort of symbiosis.

“I love teaching,” she said. “Teaching helps me remember why I love poetry.”

She said students challenge her. They offer different points of view and sometimes contextualize poems differently than she does. She said she learns from teaching.

In addition to writing and teaching, she’s the co-editor of Pleiades magazine, UCM’s literary journal.

“I want to remain active in the literary community and be a part of helping unheard voices be heard,” she said. “I think being an editor is a great place to be for that.”

Phong Nguyen, co-editor of Pleiades magazine, said Molberg “is a tireless advocate for the magazine and its contributors.”

“She has boundless energy and initiative, and her imagination when it comes to her vision for the magazine is a constant reminder to me how important it is for a journal to adapt and change to stay vital,” he said.

Molberg said she is thinking about her next book, though she isn’t necessarily sure what it might be.

“I’m working on some essays right now, so I may try my hand at some nonfiction soon,” she said and then smiled.

“But I’ll write an essay, and then I’ll turn around and write a poem.”

Students at other universities, learning from different professors, are reading Molberg’s book in class.

book, which is humbling,” Molberg said.

She traveled to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, to meet with students who had read and discussed her book.

“It was really humbling to hear them talk about it,” she said, “and to have ideas about it that I never thought were there. I enjoy that. I learn about these people too, what they’re looking for, what they’re interested in.”

Mostly, she wanted to impart upon those students – those aspiring writers – that not everything is going to work, and it’s not a problem.

“I had hundreds and hundreds of poems that I kicked out of this book,” Molberg said. “I wanted them to see that it’s OK to write bad poems. Writing is hard. It’s hard for writers.”

That difficulty is what accentuates her recent success.

“It’s surreal being the author of a book, talking to people, answering questions about it,” she said. “I feel like a kid in grown-up’s clothes.”

I like my dessert first, so let’s start with the things that went right for the Mules. While they fell just shy of defeating the back-to-back national champions, they managed to score 20 points against a rigid defense that posted three shut outs and allowed just 14 total points per game leading up to their matchup against the Mules. This comes out to an average of 3.5 points per game.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The Bearcats defense held opposing two teams to nearly a field goal per game in their first four games of the season.

The last team to score 20 or more points against the Bearcats was the Ferris State Bulldogs in the Division II semifinals last December.

It wasn’t simply the score that made the Mules offense stand out against Northwest’s previous opponents; it was also their ability to pass. The Bearcats defense allowed 348 total yards passing to opposing teams prior to facing the Mules.

Brook Bolles threw for 309 yards on Saturday.

Not only did Bolles nearly match the total number of yards passing by every quarterback that faced the Bearcats, but he also accomplished a feat that is rarely seen when facing the green and white.

Since the start of the 2013 season, the Bearcats have played 60 games, including NCAA tournament games. Over the course of those 60 games, the Northwest defense has allowed an opposing team to throw for 300 or more passing just seven times.

So, it wasn’t a bad day of passing for a quarterback in just his fifth outing as a starting quarterback.

The Bad There were some highlights of the day, but if everyt headline would’ve read, “Mules upset the dynasty”. S why that wasn’t the case.

There is a multitude of variables that can be examin the Mules faired in a given contest, but there is one th the run game.

When the Mules run well, they win. It’s that simple heading into Arrowhead Stadium. They averaged 254 three victories. They totaled just 31 yards rushing in Fort Hays State.

Against Northwest, the Mules mustered a measly 72 Devante Turner had 11 carries, his second most so far shirt freshmen, however, ran for only 23 yards rushing, his average of 101 yards per game. The only game in w yards was the Mules’ loss prior to facing to Northwest.

The other problem that plagued the Mules was the Be Shawn Bane. Bane accumulated a season-high 139 ya the Mules.

While the game may have been Bane’s best of the means a breakout game for him. Bane was the leading cats last season with 707 yards receiving and 10 touchd cats top receiver this season with 239 yards receivin Mules.

THE UGLY Speaking of a game-winning touchdown, it would be easy to wrap up this article by stating that the Bearcats 30-second drive to win the game was the sole reason the Mules lost. That is not the case, though.

The Bearcats capitalized on defense mistakes in the final moments of the game, but the only reason the game was decided by a last-second touchdown was the fact that the Mules made a plethora of offensive mistakes earlier in the game.

The final drive from the Bearcats would have been a moot point had the Mules offense avoided costly mistakes. Bolles threw a pick-six midway through the first quarter to give the Bearcats their first touchdown of the evening and later fumbled on the Mules’ 13-yard line to prompt a Northwest field goal. These two mistakes resulted in 10 total points for the Bearcats and could have dramatically altered the outcome of the game.

This is by no means to say that Bolles cost the Mules the game either. Bolles was heavily pressured throughout the game. The Mules offense line was overpowered by the Bearcats at times and allowed Bolles to be sacked on six different occasions.

It was easy to criticize the Mules defense in the closing moments of the contest, but in reality, just as much damage was done by the Mules offense.

The litter that’s visible is obnoxious. But there is a lot going on that isn’t visible. Just because you can’t see it does not mean that it isn’t affecting you.

Through an intricate web of drains, pipes, manmade channels and natural creeks designed and maintained to reroute stormwater away from the city, litter is traveling miles throughout our town, behind our homes and beneath our feet.

I recently met up with Marvin “Slim” Coleman, Warrensburg’s director of Public Works, and he took me around town to show me parts of the complex stormwater drainage system, just one part of what his department oversees.

If you haven’t spent much time thinking about the storm drains throughout the city, you aren’t alone.

“People don’t take notice,” Coleman said.

“They’re essential to keeping property from flooding, controlling runoff, and they help with keeping streets in good condition.”

It isn’t just the citizens who don’t notice them.

“Elected officials like to do things that everyone can see get done. Getting streets built, a street lamp up,” he said. “(The storm drainage system) is not a prominent detail - until there’s failure. Then it’s an issue we all recognize.”

It’s one thing to ignore them and the function they serve. It’s something entirely different to misunderstand their function and misuse them.

Coleman said people often think of them as a way to get rid of things. He said he’s caught people dumping antifreeze and used motor oil into them.

He’s been called to retrieve keys, wallets and cell phones.

The police department has even called him because someone has tried to use the storm drains to stash contraband items, stolen merchandise, knives and guns. While those calls have been made infrequently, they have been made.

The list goes on.

“We’ve found trash can lids, hubcaps, toys, sports balls, car batteries,” he said. “All of these things can cause problems.”

One problem is that the concrete vaults the drains empty into aren’t designed to hold things. They’re designed to regulate the flow of water – with it comes anything the water is carrying.

About a quarter of the town’s water runoff drains into Lion’s Lake.

I used to believe the bottles, cans and other items floating in Lion’s Lake ended up there because someone put them there.

I now know it’s entirely possible that the person who once held that bottle or can may not have been anywhere near the lake when they stopped holding it.

Another problem with allowing litter into the storm drains is it can clog the pipes that connect one part of the system to another. The clogs can cause the drains to back up, forcing water back into the streets, negating the whole point and purpose of having a drain in the first place.

Clogged pipes and vaults require maintenance.

Maintaining this system is expensive.

At the minimum, someone has to clear the blockage.

It requires special equipment and a paid employee.

At the other end of the financial spectrum, when the vaults and pipes are damaged, they must be replaced.

“People think these things will last forever,” Coleman said. “But they don’t, especially if we don’t take care of them.”

He said that the average cost of one of the vaults is $3,200. The cost of the pipes that connect the vaults to each other and to where they empty is $100 per foot.

I encourage you to take those numbers, go for a walk or a drive, count the drains and see how much money you pass.

Remember, those numbers are just averages. Cole-

man said some of the larger vaults cost upwards of $10,000, and some of the larger pipes can cost around $1,000 per foot.

Taxpayers don’t want to shell out that kind of money too many times.

Also consider that the Public Works Department has a budget that isn’t entirely devoted to the stormwater drainage system. Every time they have to fix something that we broke just because we were unwilling to carry the remnants of our last fast-food excursion to a trash can, it takes money out of that budget.

If something needs to be repaired beyond a certain proximity to the street, that money comes out of the city’s general revenue fund, which is shared by all of the city’s departments; those repairs don’t just affect what the Public Works Department is able to do. They can affect what the city in general is able to do.

One more consideration to make: The Public Works Department employs a 10-person crew.

Coleman said most communities the size of Warrensburg have 20 or more.

11 ANALYSIS GET PROACTIVE, WARRENSBURG

It’s easy to ask for things of our governing body, and it’s easy to point out what’s going on that is either wrong or what could be better.

However, it’s hard sometimes to remember there are systems in place by which citizens can communicate their needs and ideas to our governing bodies.

Warrensburg has a five-member City Council that works with the city manager to address things they feel need to be addressed.

“They will worry about things they are aware of,” said Harold Stewart, Warrensburg’s city manager.

How does one make them aware of such things?

“Come to a City Council meeting,” he said.

“They will listen.”

It’s so simple.

The Council meets at 7 p.m. every second and fourth Monday of the month at the City Council Chambers, located at 200 S. Holden St. Contact one of the city council members to have something added to the meeting’s agenda. Have something on your mind that you didn’t get on the agenda? Show up anyway, and you can sign up to speak at the table right inside the Council Chambers.

This doesn’t just apply to litter. But it can apply to litter.

Again, identifying the problem can be easy.

And, sometimes, finding a solution can be hard. But it isn’t solely the responsibility of the people that govern the city to provide solutions.

Especially if they don’t know that you feel is a problem.

I’ve lived in Warrensburg since 1989, and I’m a little embarrassed that I just figured out how simple it is for anyone to work with the city on anything they feel is important.

If this (or anything, really) is important to you, you should stop by and bring it up. They can’t fix something they don’t know is broken.

If enough people tell them it’s broken, they may be inclined to fix it a little faster.

SPORTS UPDATES: UPDATES: SPORTS Jennies soccer once again sweeps MIAA awards For the second week in a row, the Jennies claimed all three MIAA soccer honors. Ana Dilkes was named Goalkeeper of the Week for the fifth time this season, Kalya Hamner earned Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, and Jada Scott earned co-offensive player of the week.

Over the course of the weekend Scott totaled two goals and an assist. She scored and had assists against the Nebraska Kearny Lopers on Friday and added an additional goal against the Fort Hays State Tigers on Sunday. Scott has a total of five goals and four assists so far this season.

Hamner played a key role in Jennies' defense that posted another pair of shut out victories, brining their shut out total for the year to 10. This marks the most consecutive shut outs in program history and ties the MIAA record for consecutive shutouts. Hamner also aided the team offensively with two assists in their game against the Lopers.

Ana Dilkes broke her own UCM record for consecutive shut outs after notching her 10th against Fort Hays State. She totaled four saves over the weekend, two in each of the Jennies’ contests.

Dilkes currently leads Division II in shutouts, goals against average, and save percentage.

The Jennies look to extend their shut out record as they host the Central Oklahoma Bronchos at 7 p.m. Oct. 6.

Jennies Volleyball Sweeps Emporia The Jennies defeat the Lady Hornets in just three sets on Saturday. Ally Offerdahl picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 12 digs. Aubree Bell had a team-best 12 kills and Audrey Fisher totaled 10 kills. Kylie Hohlen led the team with 23 digs. The Jennies landed six services aces against the Hornets.

Jennies Volleyball will begin a four-game road trip with a match against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats at 7 p.m. Oct. 7.

Brook Bolles threw for 309 yards passing and two touchdowns against the Bearcats defense.

Seth Herbert caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Brook Bolles late in the third quarter.

Kyrion Parker caught a 4-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass with just 34 seconds left in the game.

Devante Turner had 34 yards on the ground and 60 yards receiving.

STUDENTS TAKE PART IN TAILGATING BEFORE THE UCM FALL CLASSIC

University of Central Missouri students came from far and wide to witness and enjoy tailgating and this year's UCM Fall Classic versus Northwest Missouri State University at Arrowhead Stadium.

Some UCM fans said tailgating has been anticipated more than the actual game.

“I graduated two years ago but I still come back and tailgate with my old friends and teammates,” UCM Alumni Joseph Holland said.

Students came in trucks, SUV’s and even school buses to have fun and support their team. Many students said it's the best part of the game day experience, “getting pumped and having a few beers and ready to win,” senior agriculture major said who wishes not to be named.

Tailgating before games is a popular event among many college students at universities nationwide that usually consists of drinking, games, barbecue and music.

However, many students said tailgating at Arrowhead is an experience of its very own. There were hundreds of students, alumni, and residents of Warrensburg that came out to celebrate and cheer on the

mules. Driving through the parking arena all that was visible were crowds of happy tailgaters dressed in red, white or black.

“I’ve been to several football games and even to the Classic before but never seen a tailgate like this one,” said Bryce Bradford, an alumni of UCM from Kansas City, Missouri.

Many tailgaters throughout the parking lot agreed that tailgating brings the crowd together before the game.

“Tailgating is something I do before most big games and I just love coming out and getting hype with my friends for the game,” said a sophomore education major who wishes not to be named. The mules played a tough game but lost 24-20 to the Bearcats in the final minutes of the game.

Some students were still seen happy and smiling after the game even though UCM did not win. The mules threw an interception in the final quarter and lost by a touchdown and extra point field goal.

“It was still a great day and fun as hell” a girl said walking through a crowd of friends and other UCM fans.

Tailgating at the UCM Fall Classic was a great experience and students continuously come back year after year to join each other in the tailgating experience at Arrowhead.

“I don't care how many years ago I graduated, I'll definitely be back for this” Bradford said.

It was reported at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 20 that a university key was lost sometime Sept. 19.

Ashley D. Otte was arrested at 11:01 p.m.

Sept. 20 at Pertle Springs on suspicion of drug paraphernalia and on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Otte’s car was reportedly stuck in a ditch at Pertle Springs. Three of Otte’s passengers were UCM students and allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana with Otte. They will be referred for disciplinary action.

Reginald L. Meade was arrested at 10:54 p.m. Sept. 21 in UCM Lot 43 for active warrants through the Warrensburg Police Department.

It was reported at 11:17 p.m. Sept. 21 that the Warrensburg Police Department requested assistance with a loud party complaint at 420 Grover St. Police allegedly made contact with multiple subjects as they left the party who advised they were under the age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. Three males who lived at the residence were contacted and are all UCM students.

The party was dispersed and the incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

It was reported at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 22 that the pulley for the southwest basketball goal was smoking in the Multipurpose building.

At 1:51 p.m. the Johnson County Fire Department arrived and determined there were no hazards. Maintenance arrived at 1:56 p.m.

It was reported at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 22 that dispatch requested an officer respond to UCM Lot 42 per request of the WPD regarding a suspected drug law violation. At 7:30 p.m., the reporting officer collected a small bag containing methamphetamine that was abandoned in the grass at the south end of Lot 13. The methamphetamine was seized and placed into evidence.

It was reported at 10:34 p.m. Sept. 23 that someone took a $100 bill from a purse that was sitting on a bookshelf at the front desk of Nickerson Hall between midnight and 8 p.m.

Cole D. Kline was arrested at 12:45 a.m.

Sept. 24 at the intersection of Zoll and Grover streets on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol and an open container of alcohol in public, littering and possession of false identification.

Devon M. Bruce was arrested at 1:49 a.m. Sept 24 at the intersection of South Holden and Union streets on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop.

Benjamin G. Thomas was arrested at 2:58 a.m. Sept. 24 in the east parking lot of UMB Bank on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and failing to produce proof of valid insurance.

It was reported at 8:59 p.m. Sept. 24 that two females were arguing at the east end of the north hall in Fitzgerald Hall.

Matthew D. Wilkinson was arrested at 11:28 a.m. Oct. 1 on suspicion of possessing a false or altered ID. It was reported at 1:43 p.m. Oct. 1 that a vehicle in UCM Lot 49 had been broken into sometime between 3 p.m. Sept. 28 and 1:41 p.m. Oct. 1. Items in the vehicle had allegedly been moved and money was taken.
