The top three papers from the 2017 McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Internship have been announced.

Raven Alade was awarded first place for her paper titled, “Experiencing Microaggressions in Relation to Academic Performance, Mental Health, Self-Identity and Student Involvement.” Second place went to Rebecca Cordia, with her paper “Self-Esteem in Adults Who Stutter in Relation to Coping Mechanisms, Stress Management and Support Group Participation.” Nicholas Cookinham took third with his paper “Uber’s Effect on Impaired Driving in Kansas City: An Economic Event Study.”

The recipients’ papers will be published in full in the fall issue of The McNair Journal. The other McNair interns’ papers will be published in abstract form.

UCM program receives accreditation The Bachelor of Science degree program in computer science-computer science option at UCM has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. This accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter into innovative technical fields.

“This accreditation provides assurance that UCM’s undergraduate computer science program meets rigorous standards and expectations set forth not only by ABET, but also by dedicated faculty and leadership within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics,” said Alice Greife, dean of the College of Health, Science and Technology in a UCM news

release.

“The quality of the program is key to assuring the success of our students as they pursue careers or advanced degrees.”

UCM signs MOU with US Air Force recruiting The United States Air Force Recruiting Service entered a Memorandum of Understanding with UCM Oct. 20 at the Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport.

The MOU sets in motion a process that will allow the department of aviation to

nominate up to five senior aviation student applicants for the Air Force’s Pilot Officer Recruiting program.

Upon graduation, accepted students will go on to attend the Air Force’s Officer Training School followed by Undergraduate Pilot training. The Air Force Recruiting Service Operations Division will coordinate an annual date for senior aviation students to submit applications to the USAF via the director of the aviation department.

The MOU was signed by Maj. Gen. Garrett Harencak, commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service, and Charles Ambrose.

Mizzou assistant professor speaks about the plague and Protestant Reformation at UCM

Kristy Wilson-Bowers, assistant professor of history at the University of Missouri-Columbia, gave a lecture on the plague and the Protestant Reformation at the University of Central Missouri this Tuesday.

Dan Crews, history professor at UCM, applied for the grant that made the lecture possible and organized the event along with Eric Tenbus, the history and anthropology department chair.

“I’ve known of her and her work. She’s a specialist on the plague and people may not realize this, but the plague reoccurs every 20 years,” Crews said. “The way the plague kept returning along with other diseases and the warfare, it's part of the culture. The plague and the reformation are tied together.”

“I work with Dr. Crews and he got an application for an internal grant here at UCM. He used the money from that grant to bring Dr. Bowers here to UCM,” Tenbus said.

The lecture was organized because this year marks the 500th anniversary of

Martin Luther breaking off of the Catholic church after noticing abuses within the church. The church was selling indulgences that would cut down the time a person spent in purgatory.

“You don't have many 500th anniversaries come up,” Tenbus said.

Luther wrote statements and then hammered them on the door of the Catholic church.

“For a Catholic priest to do that, that was rather monumental,” Tenbus said. “It sparked this reflection that turned into a movement that turned into a revolution.

The reformation is really a revolution in the sense that a lot of Europeans decided to follow an alternative type of church which were called protestant churches, the root of the word being protest.”

Wilson-Bowers’ lecture was called “Dancing with Death: Plague and the Reformation” and she connected the two subjects by talking about religious problems after the plague.

“We have the plague playing into the reformation in lots of different ways, but when we think of the religious world, we don't always think of the disease world,” Wilson-Bowers said during the lecture.

“When we talk about the issue of medi-

cine or the issue of disease, we don't always put it back into some of these other social, religious, economic contexts, but they all fit in together, and there is this tremendous kind of overlap with the different influences.”

Wilson-Bowers ended the lecture by summarizing what the message of it was.

“Perhaps the overall message of Dance with Death is that individuals do survive, and communities do survive, and life does go on,” she said.

Crews said Wilson-Bowers was very qualified to speak on the subject of the plague.

“She has written and been published in medical journals. Historians aren’t usually considered that scientific,” he said.

Crews said he believes Wilson-Bowers will continue to do research and work with the subject of the reformation and plague.

“She’s got a good topic and she’s in a good position, so I expect that she’ll continue to produce,” Crews said.

“It’s important for the university because these are the kind of things that universities should be doing. Bringing in outside scholars or speakers to talk about things that provide value to learning,”

THRIVE: A student's perspective

Are you familiar with THRIVE? THRIVE stands for transformation, health, responsibility, independence, vocation and education.

THRIVE is a two-year program at the University of Central Missouri campus for young adults with all different kinds of disabilities. I am a THRIVE student here at University of Central Missouri, and I really enjoy it here on campus.

Karen Fahrmeier, the THRIVE coordinator, talked to me about when the program started and who is in the THRIVE program.

“THRIVE started in the spring of 2010, when there were parents who came and asked about the program because (their kids) were turned down by two universities,” Fahrmeier. said “I’ve been working here since 2011. There was a different coordinator. This is the program’s eighth year and my seventh year."

THRIVE has 16 first-years and 16- second years, so we have 32 students total. It has grown over the years.

“This program is for students who have intellectual and developmental disabilities,” she said.

Parents say students have been independent after the program.

Tenbus said. “What you learn at a university is not just in a classroom.”

This is the second lecture the history and anthropology department has hosted this year. Tenbus said the department takes pride in being the medium for these types of events.

“This is an opportunity to bring someone from outside and we can bring them in because of our connections. If the department can be the medium in which we can do this, all the better,” he said.

Jack Noelker, a history major, said lectures like Wilson-Bowers’ adds depth to his learning experience by exposing him to a wider range of academic options that lead to a deeper understanding of subjects he’s learning.

“I really do think it's important to host more lectures like this one because I feel like at best they can only serve to expand the knowledge of the students who attend, and at worst confirm what they have already learned,” Noelker said. “Professor Bowers was incredibly interesting to listen to, and if more scholars like her were to host lectures at UCM, I would probably go to every one.”

National Disability Awareness Week underway at the University of Central Missouri

The Office of Accessibility organized various events to honor National Disability Awareness Week at the University of Central Missouri.

The week has consisted of a then and now presentation Monday, a panel discussion on disabilities Tuesday and a meet and greet with THRIVE students Wednesday.

Disability awareness trivia will take place Thursday and a presentation on braille and technology that assists people with disabilities will take place Friday.

Both events will take place in the Elliott Student Union.

Carlynn Westervelt, the graduate assistant in the Office of Accessibility Services, is in charge of the week’s events.

“It is an extremely important week for me and the students my office serves,” Westervelt said.

Westervelt said this week is crucial in allowing able-bodied students to see through the eyes of disabled students.

“I believe that disability awareness is important because it allows abled students to learn about the experiences of disabled students, and also gives our disabled students a chance to be an advocate for themselves as well as feel empowered as the capable students they are,” she said.

Barbara Mayfield, the director of Accessibility Services, is overseeing the week’s events.

“For many years I developed NDAW. I'm grateful to have talented graduate assistants like Carlynn Westervelt to create and carry out the event,” she said.

Mayfield said the week’s events are directed toward building knowledge, public

awareness, and advocacy for disability issues.

“Able students rarely realize that nearly 10 percent of their fellow students have some type of disability, and bringing awareness also brings tolerance and acceptance,” Westervelt said.

Casey Reed, the graduate assistant in the Office of Student Activities for diversity education, was in charge of the panel discussion that was held on Tuesday.

Reed said a panel of four students talked about what it’s like going to UCM and living in our community with disabilities.

He also said decisions about accessibility services comes down to voting and the disabled student population doesn’t have the numbers most of the time.

“It’s about providing a platform to groups of people who wouldn’t get a platform based on the nature of the numbers,” Reed said. “There are more able-bodied

students than students living with disabilities, so when it comes to voting, it leaves smaller groups of people whose needs are different than the majority without various things like infrastructure, policy or anything to help them.”

Mayfield said it’s important to inform students with disabilities that services are provided for them so they can have equal opportunity in their college education.

“Students, faculty and staff can be reminded that persons with disabilities are qualified as students and as future employees,” Mayfield said. “Eleven percent of a typical college student body are students with disabilities.”

Disability awareness trivia and the presentation on braille and technology are the final events of National Disability Awareness Week at UCM and they will be hosted in the Union Atrium.

THRIVE, continued from page 3 said the THRIVE program grew on her and she has had a positive experience in it.

“When I was a first-year in 2016 THRIVE, I honestly did not enjoy it because I was nervous and scared of all the new people here, and I did not want to leave my friends behind, but another side of me knew it would be good for me," McFarland said. "However, as the time went by I slowly started to enjoy my time here, and in the process, I made tons of new friends too and lots of new memories.”

McFarland said her time in THRIVE is coming to an end.

“I learned so much from this program. I know now coming here on my own was the best choice I’ve ever made in my life because the people here treat you like you’re human, not just like you’re someone with a disability," McFarland said. "They push you to do your best every day and expect the same thing out of you as they would to any other college student.”

“I know without this program I would (have)never

developed a drive like this one. Now I’m studying for the ACT so I can enroll as a typical college student.

I’m also studying for my driver’s education test,” McFarland said. “THRIVE is one of the best programs I’ve ever been in. I will sure miss them when I’m gone."

THRIVE is located on the ground floor of East Ellis and we’re always fun to hang out with. We go to classes like you guys do every day, and we do activities like go to the football games or fairs. We’re always interested in making new friends, so we try to get out and hope we meet new people.

Move-in day was the same for us as well as getting roommates and making friends with other students in the program. We eat in the dining halls, the union, or off campus. It just depends on what we’re in the mood for.

We have also met with Chuck Ambrose a couple of times and he’s a great president for the school. Make sure you come and say hi to us when you see us on

campus. We would love to meet new people.

In order to bring awareness to the THRIVE program, students in an organizations management course hosted THRIVE day Wednesday by selling shirts and polos for the THRIVE Students Scholarship. Shirts cost $12 and polos are $14 and are available by placing an order with Karen Fahrmeier before Nov. 4.

If interested in getting involved with THRIVE, we are always looking for volunteers for study hours Sundays from 2-4 p.m. and Mondays through Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. For more information about general involvement, volunteering or purchasing a shirt, email fahrmeier@ucmo.edu.

Veterans Center honors tradition of potluck meals

There is an unofficial-but-widespread military tradition whereby members of military units regularly meet over a potluck-style meal.

Once a semester since 2013, the UCM Military and Veterans Success Center hosts such a potluck. This semester the meal will be 11 a.m. Nov. 7 at the center, located in the lower level of the Elliott Student Union. All military-connected students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

Jeff Huffman, director of the Office of Military and Veteran affairs, said these sorts of meals encourage the development of community and camaraderie within military units.

“A big part of what makes the United States military such a successful organization is that when you hear ‘We’re like a family,’ it really means that,” he said.

“What do families do? They share meals with each other. They share everything, pretty much.”

Brandon Anderson, president of the Student Veterans Organization, said this semester’s potluck will be something of a sendoff for the military-connected students who are graduating.

Huffman said these potlucks are meant to ease the transition for military-connected students from the rigidity of military service to the new rigors of continuing their education.

“Keep in mind, most of those folks that are military-connected at UCM, they chose a different route,” Huffman said.

“They didn’t go to college first. They went to the military first. Now they’ve earned their benefit, and they’re coming back to college. We’re just trying to make them comfortable while they’re here so that they can get across the finish line.”

He said that in a lot of ways, the years spent in college are the only years spent transitioning from military life to civilian

life. The potluck meal at the Military and Veterans Service Center is another way to offer military-connected students, faculty and staff something familiar during that transition.

“It’s just a way for all of us to come together and maybe talk about how the semester is going,” said Lisa Morse, VA school certifying official at the Office of Military and Veteran Services. “We can kind of touch base more on a personal level with them than we already have.”

Huffman said the potluck meal is a great way for military-connected members of the campus community, especially the students, to meet people with similar paths and backgrounds who can encourage them to continue their educations.

“There are folks that are freshmen, and they’re just now transitioning out, and there are folks that are seniors, and they’re going to help each other through that transition phase,” Huffman said. “There are some that are unsure of their ability to be a college student, but then they’re look-

ing at someone that’s been there before them and they’re saying, ‘Oh yeah, I can do that. He’s the same military specialty code that I was, and he was a diesel mechanic when he was in the Marine Corps, and now he’s getting his degree? I can do that, too.’ It’s beneficial.”

Katie Bond, coordinator of academic transition at the Office of Military and Veteran Services, said the potluck provides a reason for people to get together.

“Everybody loves food, so it’s an easy way to get people to come in and take advantage of being able to spend time together,” she said.

A sign-up sheet is in the Office of Military and Veteran Services in the lower level of the Elliott Student Union for anyone interested in contributing to and attending the potluck.

“There’s a lot of success stories in this center, right here,” Huffman said. “Folks that didn’t think they could, and they did.

That’s why I love my job. It’s an awesome job.”

REAL MEN CRY

The University of Central Missouri’s Spotlight organization hosted an event titled “Real Men Cry” to discuss masculine stereotypes and expectations forced on men by society.

More than 20 people attended the event in the Elliott Student Union on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The discussion was led by student panelists Jason Angeles, Chris Rodriguez, Jay Todd, Kamaal Kenyatte’ and Christopher Cooper.

The panelists took turns passing a mi-

crophone back and forth, answering prepared questions asked by Casey Reed, graduate assistant of diversity and moderator of the event.

Reed focused the discussion on characteristics that help define the meaning of a masculine man. He asked the panelists to define the difference between sex, gender and sexuality, and then to define the difference between masculinity and femininity. The panelists described masculinity and femininity as having strong emotions, yet each one is supposed to be expressed in different ways.

“It’s something that you learn or something that you’re born with more so,” Todd said. “In today’s society, masculini-

ty is mainly stereotyped as aggressive and protective.”

Rodriguez, a graduate student and resident hall director of Fitzgerald, was the only female on the panel. She said masculinity and femininity complement each other but have two different roles.

“It’s almost like you can’t have one without the other when we talk about masculinity and femininity, which it shouldn’t be because the binary system is not beneficial for anybody,” Rodriguez said.

Reed asked what it means to be hyper-masculine. The panelists agreed that hyper-masculinity is the stereotype that men should never show emotion. They said they are supposed to go to the gym,

be physically fit or athletic, be tough and be able to drink the most liquor. They can’t give hugs or be affectionate because that sort of behavior is considered gay.

“Masculine people are not supposed to be emotionally soft. They are supposed to be a little bit harder,” Cooper said.

“They’re supposed to walk a certain way and have a certain kind of confidence that feminine people aren’t really allowed to have without having to deal with some kind of social backlash.”

Ambrose addresses sexual assault and concealed carry amongst topics at forum

President Chuck Ambrose addressed the issues of sexual assault and concealed carry during a Student Government Association-sponsored forum Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Nahm Auditorium, located in the Morris Building.

Addressing a group of some 40 students and faculty, Ambrose said every instance of sexual assault needs to be taken seriously.

“This topic has caused a lot of personal reflection and national attention lately with the #MeToo campaign to encourage victims of sexual misconduct to share their experiences,” Ambrose wrote in a follow-up letter emailed to the campus community Oct. 23. “It is time for a societal change.”

During the forum, Ambrose said this topic is important and should never be taken lightly. He said sexual assault can happen to students and faculty by students

and faculty at any point, and perpetrators should be held accountable for their actions.

He said sexual assault is a major issue, not just specifically on UCM’s campus, but worldwide. Yet, rape culture allows it to continue.

A student in attendance said alcohol consumption is a major player in this problem.

Ambrose somewhat disagreed.

“I do agree that alcohol can heighten an instance of sexual assault,” Ambrose said, “But there is no excuse for anyone trying to get someone to a point of intoxication where they can no longer say no. Anyone can be assaulted at any time. If someone is uncomfortable with yours or another’s advances, it is time to excuse yourself.”

Ambrose said there are measures students can take if they feel unsafe within a classroom or walking on campus.

“The Safe Team is a free escort service that will help walk individuals who request assistance from one destination to another on campus,” Ambrose said.

“Anyone can use this service for any reason when they do not want to walk alone.”

The issue of concealed carry was also discussed during the forum.

Luke Hawley, Student Government Association president, asked Ambrose about the status of concealed carry on campus.

“I just wanted to hear the further insight about concealed carry on campus,” Hawley said. “Has this made any progress in being allowed?”

Ambrose said students need to voice their opinion with lawmakers or actively protest this topic.

“Concealed carry on campus is something the students will have to show their concern about on campus,” Ambrose said.

“If students do not fight against this law, it could very well see itself on our campus.

It is not up to UCM whether or not this law gets passed. It does prove to be a very dangerous and scary concern.”

Ambrose said there are no bills related to concealed carry pending in the Missouri Legislature. However, he said it could quickly be something irreversible if no

one were to speak out on it.

Currently, weapons are not allowed on campus.

Tuition concerns were also brought up during the discussion.

“Although tuition was forced to slightly increase, we understood it was not the students who deserved the burden,” Ambrose said. “If we raised tuition, it would place the blame for the budget on them, and that was not an option.”

Ambrose said the school took a large hit with the budget decrease, but UCM was in a similar situation in 2010 and managed to overcome that. He urged the group to keep their heads up.

SGA hosted the event to gain Ambrose’s insight about a variety of UCM issues and to provide an opportunity for students to ask him questions in an open discussion.

CHAMBER OFFERS STUDENT MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM

The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce is seeking student members for the 2017-18 school year.

The Chamber recently partnered with the office of Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support to create the program that pairs UCM students with mentors from the Warrensburg Young Professionals group. MAPS Coordinator Suzy Latare said students in the program will work with their mentor, network with members of the community and volunteer at at least one chamber event per semester.

Latare said the program was designed with several purposes.

“One (purpose is) to help students with professional development skills like networking and interacting at professional events, that kind of thing, getting to know professionals in the area,” Latare said. “(It was) also designed to help the university as part of its goal to continue building the relationships between the university and the community that we are in.”

She said the program welcomes applicants of any major or class standing.

“We really have it open to any major because no matter what you end up doing in life, you’re going to live in a community,” Latare said. “So it’s an opportunity to help students from any major to understand a little more about the community now and how they can

make a difference in their community wherever they end up living. It’s actually just a way to help them with the networking and do it in a pretty supportive and welcoming way.”

Latare said she would like to have 10 students involved in the program

by March so they would have enough time to volunteer at an event in the spring.

“Even if students don’t plan to live here in Warrensburg or Johnson County, you never know what those connections can bring you, and if students only stay on campus or only stay in their student organizations and don’t start building their professional network, it’s going to be harder,” Latare said. “Some students may already have great connections and they know where they’re going and that’s great, but this is an opportunity for folks who maybe don’t have those opportunities, who maybe don’t have a background in lots of involvement and so this is a great way for those students to be able to do that in a really welcoming environment.”

Latare, who used to work at the Chamber as the visitor center coordinator and later the membership and communication coordinator, said the idea for the program has existed at the Chamber for a long time but remained dormant.

“Since I worked there before and now I’m working here (at UCM) it just made it a lot easier to get it going because there was a person on campus that was a good contact,” Latare said.

Amanda Mankin, member relations coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce, worked with Latare to help create the program. They started six months ago.

“Obviously, we’re in the business of promoting our community and building our community, and we know that a lot of the business owners are now much younger, they’re learning their things in college and they’re becoming business owners a lot earlier in life than they used to,” Makin said. “So we’re really excited about building the relationships with the students of UCM and getting them connected with resources in Warrensburg and the surrounding area.”

Students who are interested in the program can apply online at ucmo.edu/ MAPS. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in community involvement, have a recommendation from a UCM faculty or staff member or a local business person, attend a student membership orientation and be able to volunteer for at least one Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce event per semester. “If I see a group of guys walking down the same side of the street as me and we’re walking in opposite directions, one of us has to cross the street and walk on the other side or it’s going to be a fight,” Kenyatte’ said.

Reed asked in what ways does hyper-masculinity negatively affect people?

Todd said hyper-masculinity expectations cause people to dislike themselves and hold everything inside, which brings about problems like self-harm and lack of confidence.

“I asked my friend, ‘What would make you cry?’ He said, ‘If my mama die or if I fail.’

Then I said, ‘How would you deal with it?’ He said, ‘Ball it up and keep it inside,’” Todd said.

“See, you can’t do that. That’s the worst thing you can do.”

He said let your emotions out and cry if you have to because it’s OK for men to cry.

To close the event, Reed asked the panelists to share one piece of advice for someone trying to cope with masculine behaviors.

All of them mentioned something different.

CHANGE EXACERBATES OUR GROWING TRASH PROBLEM Back in July, the volume of litter and trash I had been walking through for years, possibly decades, horrified me. I don’t know what made me notice it, but I did.

From there, I set out to learn about it: what was out there, why it was out there, and what we could do to stop it from being out there.

I learned more than I imagined I would.

Strictly from a standpoint of acquiring information, learning more than I ever imagined is a good thing.

However, what I learned doesn’t offer much in the way of hope.

Part of this journey included collecting litter and trash that is in our town. Working a couple of hours a week, a few volunteers and I collected over 500 gallons of trash.

Most of what was collected was what could be seen from the streets or the sidewalks.

I learned many of the city’s departments are understaffed and must therefore concentrate on higher priorities. As much as I’d like to live in a community completely devoid of litter and associated issues, I understand that’s not the biggest dream to dream, not while there are other issues that must routinely be corrected, and trying to implement proactive solutions means introducing more work to be done without necessarily introducing more money to pay for that work. I get that.

I learned littering in Warrensburg doesn’t exclusively cause issues for the city of Warrensburg. Through the city’s storm water drainage system that connects to creeks, which connect to rivers, which connect to the ocean, Warrensburg’s trash has the ability to travel great distances and contribute to issues in other cities, other states, and other countries, or to the general global issues affecting everyone.

Most recently, I learned recycling is not as much of an option as I once believed it could be. Something that I’d been taught is a good thing has become an idea that is misunderstood and is therefore largely ineffective in many ways, not the least of which is that it is only sporadically done. That was eye-opening.

I had hoped to find a solution, or at least a road to a solution, for the citizens of Warrensburg. Instead, I found that we are simply part of a bigger, systematic issue and we cannot reasonably solve this issue here.

Let’s face it: People are hard to change. If we could convince the human race to change, we wouldn’t still have murder, assault, theft, tax evasion or speeding in school zones. We’ve been around for a while, and we experience those things, and more, every day, several times a day the world over.

Since we can’t expect people to stop littering, no matter what provisions and accommodations we provide them,

As of August, UCM no longer offers the New York Times newspapers on campus.

In the past, students could walk in the union and just grab a paper off the newsstand, but now since they aren’t available, some students including Zach Terrell, senior digital media production major, are not happy because it was the only place that had the New York Times available in this area.

“Obviously I’m disappointed, especially because when I last checked into getting them at my house, it said that they didn’t deliver print copies to Warrensburg,” Terrell said.

Beth Rutt, the director of student activities, said the decision was based on expense, budget reduction and limited readership. She said with the drop in enrollment this year, the budgets funded by student fees such as student activities—which funds the Student Government Association—experienced a drop in access to financial security. Rutt said the Times had raised their price from 48 cents to a dollar per copy on weekdays and 3 dollars per copy on weekends.

“The projections for the 2017, 2018 budget given last year and then compared to the actual budget funds, we have a shortfall of around $65,000,” Rutt said. “This means that the groups that are allocated funding from this line of student fees received less funding for their projects.”

The Times was free for students through SGA by the readership program, which pays for the Kansas City Star, USA Today and formerly the Times. She said the readership program costs SGA $26,000 a year. Rutt said the majority of the Times was not being read

by the students.

“We had 100 papers delivered a day and the average pick up was around 70 per day,” Rutt said. “The majority of the papers were being picked up by faculty and retired faculty, community members or alumni, not current students. I have not had any students mention the lack of New York Times. Students have access now to the app and this seems to meet their need.”

Samantha Knaeble, junior graphic design major, said the Times was nice to have at UCM for students to read from a print newspaper, versus online.

“I picked some up whenever I was around the library usually, it was nice to flip through one and have some coffee. I know I can always go online and look at it but I like being able to physically hold a newspaper sometimes,” Knaeble said.

Terrell said having the Times on campus is important for college students who need a reliable source for national news.

“It felt like the proper college life to be staying informed by one of the most respected news sources in the world,” Terrell said. “Information is always worth it. And at the very least, having something readily available that is known for being at the top of their craft in the top of their field adds a different and important reason altogether.”

Knaebel said she wants the Times back on campus and said UCM should find a way to have the budget for the school to get the subscription back.

“I understand if they don’t want to continue getting them if they think there aren’t many students reading them," Knaebel said. "But

then I think they would be nice to have around for the few students that still enjoy them.”

Rutt said UCM could get the Times back if some partnerships were developed so that just one group wasn’t bearing the cost.

“I think the New York Times is designed for a specific audience,” Rutt said. “Perhaps those departments that reference the paper in class could consider building some budget dollars toward the subscription cost to help SGA.” Rutt said it is still important for college students to read newspapers such as the Times, because “snippet” papers such as USA Today are for more of the on-the-go information but students can’t experience the detail in the more traditional newspaper.

“Reading keeps your mind alert and challenged,” Rutt said. “Newspapers are one of the few places where you can get objective information and perspective. It is still, I think, a worthwhile mode of communicating information to our communities.”

Nickey Buzek, senior public relations major, said it is important for college students to read the Times because traditional media outlets give students examples of structured writing that engage with mass audiences.

“Speaking from a PR student perspective, reading news from sources like the New York Times enhances my writing and thinking capabilities,” Buzek said. “What I can say is that there comes a point when businesses have to take the education of America into their own hands when budget cuts affect even our news outlets. The New York Times should find a way to work with universities and vice versa.”

A REVIEW: 'THE THING'

Yes, good remakes do exist. In 1982, “The Thing” was released to theaters. The movie is a remake of the 1951 film “The Thing From Another World” is one of them. It has the same plot from the original, or at least the short story it was based on.

At an isolated science station in Antarctica, a group of researchers come across a mysterious alien. The creature can shapeshift into any life form, even people. The group fights for survival, being completely cut off from help, and not knowing which one of them is real.

Surprisingly, this horror classic was not successful when it first premiered. It performed less than expected, and was not appreciated by audiences or critics. This might have happened because “E.T.”, an iconic and fan-favorite movie, was released right before hand, which had a much more positive message about aliens.

Many viewers are familiar with horror clichés: they split up, the black guy dies first and only the virgin lives. This movie has none of those clichés. I daresay this movie is one of a kind.

The atmosphere is tense; it’s one of the best parts of the film. There's this constant ominous feeling of uncertainty. Every time the music score is played, tension fills the scene. It’s the

feeling that something isn’t as it should be, and the dreaded alien is about strike.

Another high note are the characters. Despite some not having much scene time, everyone has their own different personality, it creates a unique group dynamic. Some characters are stereotypes, but it’s how they interact as a group that makes them more than just one dimensional characters.

There’s Kurt Russell’s character, MacReady, the tough guy, action hero; and Blair, a scientist that begins to lose his sanity. Besides their general suspicion, they all stand out. Unlike other horror films, you care about these people, even though they are given no backstories. It’s how they act with each other that makes up for it, especially later on when the group members start accusing one another.

I have never seen the original, but I can say it doesn’t have the remake’s special effects. To this day, the effects for the creature are still impressive. Their use of animatronics, makeup and prosthetics make the creature terrifying and disturbing, yet amazing at the same time.

Every time it appeared on screen, I had a smile on my face. I love how it moves and shapeshifts, along with the unholy roar it releases.

A word of warning though: If you are not into body horror, which is the unnatural dis-

tortion of a physical body, you will not like this movie. The monster is pure body horror.

For those people that have a strong love for animals and cannot stand to see them hurt, you won’t like this movie either. Several dogs get killed by the creature.

Try your best not to make fun of the dated 80s technology that appears once or twice.

Also, pay attention to which version of “The Thing” you watch. A prequel of “The Thing”, with the same title, was made in 2011. A remake was made for a remake, go figure.

The director, John Carpenter, was a fan of H.P. Lovecraft. The film takes a lot of inspiration from horror literature, such as Lovecraft.

Any fan of his style – the terror of uncertainty that is space and insignificance of humanity – are subtle themes in this film.

You don’t have to have a love for horror to appreciate this movie. I have never been the biggest fan of horror, but I’m a big fan of “The Thing”. Honestly, it’s not that scary. There are a few jump scares every now and again, of course, those might be the best moments of the film.

The body horror isn’t that scary either. It might give some people nightmares, but I felt fine watching it. I highly recommend watching this film; it’s literally a classic.

JENNIES BOWLING LOOKS TO FRESHMEN TO LEAD THE YOUNG TEAM

Jennies bowling set the tone for another successful season with a first place victory at the Drury Baker Challenger last weekend and put to rest some of the concerns surrounding the young team this season.

Although the Jennies ranked No. 10 in the National TenPin Coaches Association’s preseason poll, they entered the first contest of the season on a somewhat of an uneasy note.

One of the biggest preseason concerns for the Jennies was junior Brianna Zimmerman’s inability to bowl due to injury.

Zimmerman carried an average of 180 last season and was named MIAA Most Outstanding Player for the postseason tournament.

The Jennies also graduated four seniors last season. Last season’s senior class of Marina Stever, Carly Thomas, Heather Wiehe and Samantha Roberts combined for seven top ten finishes.

Although there isn’t an abundance of experienced leaders on the team, Jennies bowling head coach Ron Holmes explained that Noelle Garrsion, the team’s sole senior, excels in stepping into a leadership role.

“Noelle has really grown into her own player,” Holmes said. “She’s become a great person for us to lean on for experience.”

The graduation of seniors and Zimmerman’s injury created an opportunity for young talent to take on prominent roles.

Several freshmen have taken on starting spots on the team, including international freshmen Isabella Correa Sarmiento and Katey Fruze.

Correa Sarmiento originates from Cali, Columbia and won a total of six medals at the 2016 Central American and Caribbean Youth Championships.

Fruze hails from Cairns, Queensland, Australia. While redshirting for the Jennies last season, Fruze represented Team

Australia at the Asian World Championships.

“They come from their national teams and that experience crosses over to our NCAA college environment,” Holmes said. “They help teach each other and get a chance to see how each other’s games evolve.”

Holmes stressed that the most essential aspect for the freshmen to pick up while they are working their way into starting spots is consistency.

“The biggest thing for us is consistency, Holmes said. “And setting a certain standard we like to play and then maintaining that last year we showed some flashes of playing at high level but we couldn’t maintain it and weren’t very consistent.”

The flashes of high-level performances that Holmes spoke of occurred sporadically throughout the Jennies season last year. They won the Drury Baker Challenger, the Lindenwood Lion Classic, and the MIAA Championship.

The inconsistency surfaced in the Jennies 19th place finish at the Vanderbilt, their 14th place finish at the Kutztown invitational, and their 9th place finish at the Arkansas State Mid-Winter Classic.

The Drury Baker Challenge proved to be an opportunity for the Jennies to put up more consistent numbers. The “A” team totaled 7,713 points, almost 600 more than the second-place Culver Stockton Wildcats.

“Some of the ladies aren’t used to training at this level and practicing this much,” Holmes said. “So it’s all part of getting them set up for the challenges that will be here in the second part of the fall.”

The Jennies will look to improve upon their constancy as they hit the road to compete in the McKendree Invitational Oct. 27-29 in Belleville, Illinios.

SPORTS UPDATES UPDATES SPORTS Soccer’s Dilkes and Scott earn MIAA honors Jada Scott was named Offensive Player of the Week and Ana Dilkes earned Goalkeeper of the Week following the Jennies’ pair of shut-out victories over Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist.

Scott scored the Jennies’ first goal against Missouri Southern and notched two assists. She also added a goal and an assist against Southwest Baptist. The redshirt junior forward not only had a pair of award-worthy performances, but she also made history in the process. Scott entered the weekend with 91 career points. Her two goals and three assists added an additional seven points to her total, making her the UCM all-time leader in career points. Scott broke the previous record of 96 set by Teleshia Joseph in 2001.

Following Dilkes’ first absence from the MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week award, the senior goalkeeper made her way back into the spotlight this week with a pair of shut-out victories to claim her seventh MIAA award in eight weeks. Dilkes snagged four saves and extended her shut-out record to 57. Her 57 career shut-outs are the most in MIAA history. She also has the second most in NCAA history, just three shut-outs away from breaking the all-time record.

The Jennies wrap up their regular season with a road trip to Lindenwood and Missouri Western this weekend. The team will face the Lions at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in St. Charles, Missouri and will take on the Griffons at noon Oct. 29 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hohlen earns AVCA and MIAA awards, Offerdhal named Specialist of the Week Kasey Hohlen earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Player of the Week along with the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week award. Ally Offerdahl was also recognized this week as the MIAA Specialist of the Week following the Jennies’ victories over Pittsburg State, Central Oklahoma and Lindenwood.

Hohlen totaled 45 kills and averaged a .466 hitting percentage over the course of the three matches. She is just the sixth Jennie in to receive an AVCA weekly award.

Hohlen also reached a milestone last weekend. In the match against Central Oklahoma, the senior middle hitter recorded her 700th career kill.

Offerdahl dished out 117 assists over the Jennies three matches. The freshmen setter also totaled 10 kills and 34 digs over that time span. Offerdahl totaled a career-high 57 assist in the match against Central Oklahoma.

The Jennies next competition will take place against the Northwest Bearcats at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in Maryville, Missouri. The road trip continues the following day as the Jennies face the Missouri Western Griffons at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Bolles captures first MIAA award after totaling 463 yards of offense Junior quarterback Brook Bolles earned the title of MIAA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring six touchdowns in the Mules 62-42 victory over Washburn.

Bolles completed 23-of-36 passes, totaling 356 yards passing and four touchdowns. He also led the Mules in rushing, gaining 117 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Bolles leads the MIAA in total passing yards this season and has thrown for at least 300 yards passing in his past five games.

The Mules victory elevated them to No. 23 in the American Football Coaches Association’s Rankings. The freshly ranked Mules will look to string together their fourth consecutive victory as they hit the road to take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos at 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Wantland Stadium in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Jennies volleyball Head Coach Flip Piontek notched his 250th victory following the Jennies sweep over the Lindenwood Lions Tuesday. As I appreciated the accomplishment, I couldn’t help but think, “That’s not that surprising; people know he wins a lot.” And then it hit me: People know that Piontek is an outstanding coach, but that might be all they know about the mastermind behind Jennies volleyball. This seemed like a shame. Just because Piontek knows the secret to successful coaching doesn’t mean his background should be a secret too. So, here’s everything you need to know about the legacy of Flip Piontek: Before coaching at UCM, Piontek spent three years coaching at the Air Force Academy. He coached the team to a thirdplace finish in the 1983 NCAA Division II tournament.

He is a veteran of the air force and

played volleyball while serving his country.

Piontek was a line judge for beach volleyball at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

He coached the first professional women’s volleyball team in Kansas City, the Kansas City Lightning. He led the team to the league's semi-final game in 1998.

He was the head coach of the Missouri/ Kansas High Performance Team in 2001.

The team placed third at the USA Volleyball High Performance Colorado Cup He served as an assistant coach for USA Volleyball’s Heart of America Havoc in 2013. The team placed fifth in the Premiere Volleyball League Championships.

Piontek has worked with Jennies volleyball for over 32 years. He began as an assistant coach and was eventually named the head coach in 2009. Gas was just 93 cents per gallon when Piontek was hired

as the Jennies assistant coach in 1986.

With Piontek as a head coach, the Jennies have won the NCAA Regional Championship on two different occasions and have accumulated six MIAA titles.

In his first season as head coach for the Jennies, he coached the team to their first MIAA championship in over 20 years.

In his second season as head coach, he led the Jennies in their first trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in 14 years.

In Piontek’s time at UCM as both an assistant and head coach, the Jennies have won over 20 MIAA Championships and have made over 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament.

He is undefeated against three MIAA opponents. He is 12-0 against Lindenwood, 15-0 against Southwest Baptist,

His record as a head coach is 250-53 and his MIAA record is 139-23.

Over the years, Piontek has learned many secrets about coaching, but the most prominent coaching advice that Piontek has shared is that coaching does not consist of instant gratification; It requires patience.

“A lot of people want pay-off right this second,” Pointek said in an interview earlier this season. “That’s the hardest for coaches because you can see the potential there, but it’s just not what we need right this second.”

Luke D. Philippona, 21, was arrested at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after officers stopped him at the intersection of Hale Lake Road and Ridgeview Drive for speeding.
