Percussionists to teach and perform at UCM The Arx Duo is coming to UCM’s Hart Recital Hall at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Arx Duo are Kansas City based percussionists Garret Arney and Mari

Yoshinaga. The duo will visit UCM for two days to present a recital, give masterclasses, teach lessons, coach chamber ensembles and interact with students. Their recital will feature UCM students.

Hartzler commends MIC and W.C. Morris building renovations Congresswoman and UCM alumna Vicky Hartzler toured the new renovations to the Wilson C. Morris Science Building and the newly opened Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit Monday, Oct. 9. The tour was led by UCM President Charles Ambrose, Lee’s Summit assistant principal for the Summit Technology Academy Jeremy Bonnesen and Lee’s Summit high school junior Isabelle Dinsmore.

The MIC building officially opened in August and allows students to begin their junior year of high school while attending the Summit Technology Academy. The students complete an associate’s degree from Metropolitan Community College at the same time they earn their high school diploma.

Hartzler said the MIC building is an “exemplary model for Missouri and the rest of the country.”

BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS CLUB PARTICIPATES IN TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE

A University of Central Missouri club is getting into the holiday spirit early this year with Toys for Tots.

The UCM Behaviora Analysis Club is partnering with Toys for Tots to host a toy drive at UCM. The drive started Wednesday, Sept. 20, and ends Friday, Dec. 1.

The BA Club is a UCM student organization within the department of psychological science that informs students about behavior analysis and serves as a philanthropic organization.

Lindsey Hillhouse, the historian for the club, is organizing the event along with a member of the club’s communication committee, Wendy Hayworth.

“This is Santa for real for them,” Hayworth said.

“This is someone they don’t know giving them a toy.

Even if it's something small, it's still going to be incredible for them, so it really doesn't have to be anything amazing.”

Toys for Tots is an organization that has been around since 1947. The organization donates toys to children that wouldn’t get a present around the holiday season otherwise because of their family’s financial struggles.

Michael Spencer, the coordinator of the local Toys for Tots organization, is helping the Behavior Analysis Club organize the event. Spencer said the Warrensburg Toys for Tots organization impacted over 1,800 kids in the area last year.

“It’s the right thing to do. It helps kids, and it’s all about the kids,” Spencer said.

Spencer said the organization is at the mercy of the

community and its willingness to give to the children of the area.

“Contrary to popular belief, these toys don’t come from the North Pole. They come from the community,” Spencer said.

The organization will be accepting unwrapped toys along with cash donations for the duration of the drive.

Spencer said 100 percent of any money collected will go towards purchasing toys.

Community members can find boxes for the toy donations in Lovinger 1111 and 4101. The ages of children receiving the toys range from newborn to 14 years old. Toys should be unwrapped.

In addition to the boxes located in the Lovinger building, there will also be a table set up at the Nov. 4 Mules football game and the Dec. 14 Mules basketball game for fans to make cash and toy donations.

The Toys for Tots drive will be the BA club’s philanthropic event for the semester. Hillhouse said the group is hoping the club is able to bring some attention to them while supporting a good cause.

“Our president of the BA club thought it would be a good philanthropic thing for us to do to get us out there so the community knows about us. We want to get people involved,” Hillhouse said.

Some 350 endowed scholarships created at UCM

Gina Galetti’s college career at UCM was cut short in 1987 when she suffered a brain aneurysm and died during her senior year as a public relations major.

Her death left her family heartbroken yet motivated to start their own endowed scholarship in Gina's name to help UCM students like her.

So far, about 350 families like the Galettis have honored those they love or the departments, social clubs or organizations that inspired them by creating endowed scholarships.

“The process of starting a family endowed scholarship takes at least a full calendar year,” said Vicki Voskovitch, financial counselor for the UCM Foundation.

Shortly after Joe Galetti’s daughter died, the UCM fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon and other Greek organizations held a small memorial service at the Alumni Memorial Chapel. It was then that Galetti said he decided to give back to those students and to those who would follow.

“When all the Greeks came together, I was very impressed,” he said. “I wanted to help them.”

Nearly two decades later, the Galetti family has reached their goal of raising $100,000 so the Galetti scholarship could be a part of UCM for many years to come.

Voskovitch said the foundation’s goal is to award as much money as possible, “even if we chase them (the students) down to apply.”

“There are over 13,000 students enrolled and about 3,500 apply,” she said. “We just wished more students would apply.”

Voskovitch said alumni enjoy meeting the students who earn their scholarships and reading their thank you notes.

The Galetti family gives four scholarships each year in remembrance of their daughter. Gina was a member of the Sigma Kappa social sorority, a sister sorority of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity, and now her scholarship awards those who are active members of these two social groups.

A third scholarship honors dependents of Kansas City firefighters because Gina was also the daughter of a KCMO firefighter. The fourth scholarship honors graduates of Gina’s alma mater, North Kansas City High School, and students with good leadership skills who are actively involved on campus.

The Almaguer family of Cincinnati, Ohio, created a scholarship in 2012 in honor of their parents and also to recognize students interested in Mexican-American heritage and activities.

The name of their endowment is The

Dr. Jose D. and Mrs. Theresa R. Almaguer Family Scholarship. Jose and Theresa Almaguer came from humble beginnings, having immigrated to the United States as young children with their parents, according to the foundation website.

“Through hard work, determination, and perseverance, both overcame prejudice and other hardships to earn advanced educational degrees,” according to the website.

With the Almaguer family’s contributions, they hope to help students interested in Mexican-American heritage pursue their dreams and make a positive contribution to society by educating others on Mexican-American heritage.

Susan and Steven Beebe took their passion for UCM to another level.

They wrote a public speaking textbook and used their royalties to help students of the UCM forensics debate team. The Beebes first met as members of the Talking Mules debate team and went on to find careers in higher education. Both are faculty members at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Susan serves as director of lower-division studies for the department of English, and Steve is a distinguished professor and chair of the department of communication studies and associate dean of the College of Fine Arts

and Communication.

The Susan and Steven Beebe Debate Scholarship benefits students involved in the UCM forensics program who are pursuing a major or minor within the department of communication. Susan graduated from UCM in 1973 and her husband, Steven, graduated in 1972. Susan Beebe said their public speaking textbook has been used by the university for several decades and is now in its 10th edition.

Tayia Gibson, sophomore political science and international studies major and recipient of the Beebe scholarship, said she is thankful for the scholarship. She said the Beebes’ generosity shows that “other alumni are willing to invest in me and my education.”

Tyler Slinkard, senior political science major, said the Beebes’ scholarship makes it possible for him to attend college. He said he was happy to be able to meet the Beebes in person when they recently visited campus.

He said he let them know the impact they had on his college career.

Spotlight hosted comedian and magician Brian Miller at Hendricks Hall last Thursday, Oct. 12.

Brian Miller, a well-known college comedian and magician of 13 years, has been recognized twice by the National Association of College Activities as one of their best performers. While currently touring the nation, he came to the University of Central Missouri and gave a performance that focused on college environments and what magic really is.

Jade Wackerman, a sophomore criminal justice major at UCM and one of the event coordinators, said Spotlight must put on an event once a month for the four months classes are in session, and with homecoming going on, Spotlight decided that would be an appropriate time.

“Lots of people showed because of homecoming nominations,” Wackerman said.

Open to the public, the event had a crowd with around 900 people attending, leading to a great deal of energy and crowd participation. During the show, the top 20 homecoming candidates were announced and the top 10 candidates were presented.

Wackerman said she hoped everyone had fun at the event and enjoyed the show.

Before the show, Brian Miller interacted with the audience by engaging individuals with conversation in various areas of

the auditorium.

From his performance, Miller hoped that his audience understood that, in some way you can’t believe everything you hear and everything people say.

When asked if magic is hard, Miller said, “Everything is hard, everything takes practice.”

Miller said if any part of his art is hard, it is entertaining. He said the hardest part of performing is keeping the audience’s attention, and that it’s easiest to lose an audience during the transitions.

“Magic is finding a way to make the impossible possible.” Miller said.

He said something almost went wrong during the middle of the performance, but no one noticed it, and that’s what you must remember when performing.

“I don’t get nervous, but I do get butterflies before the show,” Miller said.

Jasmine Cooper, a future freshman in the spring, said her favorite part of the show was how Brian Miller interacted with the crowd, getting them involved in the magic.

She said the impact the show had on her was that she got to learn a magic trick, and from now on, she will try not to pay attention to everything because you are going miss something anyway, so you might as well enjoy life.

“Life is too short, so don’t over analyze everything.” Cooper said.

Secular Student Alliance to host ‘Meet the Mormons’ to discuss religion

Two very different groups of people are scheduled to meet on campus Nov. 2 to learn about one another's religious beliefs.

The Secular Student Alliance is hosting an event called “Meet the Mormons” to discuss the Mormon faith with two Mormon elders. The event, scheduled for 6 p.m., is free and open to the public but the location has not yet been announced. There will be flyers around campus in the next few weeks for more information.

The two elders, Dace Daniels and Keaton Hiatt, both of Utah, are scheduled to give a presentation and answer questions.

Kayla Watson, junior computer science and cyber security major and SSA co-president, said she has many questions for the Mormon elders, such as their views on sexuality, piercings or tattoos and the LGBT community.

“Just because someone has different beliefs from you doesn’t mean that they’re bizarre or that you can’t talk to them or that you can’t find some way to communicate,” she said. “I would like to see people seek that out more.”

“My views on sexuality are very liberal,” she said. “I just think you should do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. So, I’m curious what they think about that. As with a lot of similar religions, I don’t think they have very positive

views on homosexuality, but I’m interested in what they would say.”

Watson said it’s important for people of other religions and belief systems to come together and have these types of events because it’s easy to discriminate people due to a lack of understanding about their faith.

“It’s important to hear their reasoning. I think the reason behind those beliefs is often more complex than people really think,” she said. “There’s just a lot of hate in the world, and I think it comes from misunderstandings a lot of times.”

Rachel Evans, member of SSA and UCM alumna, said it’s important for secular and non-secular groups to come together.

“Coming from a religious background myself, I do know the kind of fear and distrust that religious people do have for people who don’t believe,” Evans said. “I think it’s important because it opens the door for them to see that we are people and opens the door for us to see that they are people. There comes a point where we have been so distant from religion and we keep looking at it through such a critical lens that we forget that they are people, too.”

Evans said another reason she is excited for this event is because she wants to learn more about Mormonism in general.

“It’s interesting to hear the perspective of people that are living it and actually believe the religion,” she said.

Daniels and Hiatt are on their two-year mission trip in Missouri from Utah. They are residing in Warrensburg but also travel around the area to Lee's Summit, Sedalia and other cities.

They have been in Missouri for 18 months so far, helping people who come to their congregation in Warrensburg at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1515 SE state Route DD. “It’s an opportunity for us to share our beliefs with others in a non-knocking door way,” Hiatt said. “We believe our teaching is important to help someone to understand clearly.”

Daniels and Hiatt said they believe it’s important for people to hear clashing viewpoints to be well-rounded and learn about new things in general to fight ignorance and hate.

“Sure we all disagree on things but honestly we're all human,” Daniels said. “When you actually get to know someone, you realize they're pretty normal.”

Premiering in July, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” marked the web-slinger's official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans can finally see Spider-Man alongside the Avengers on the big screen–if only the Fantastic Four and X-Men could do the same. It follows Spider-Man, played Tom Holland, as he struggles to be a superhero and be a teenager at the same time. All the while, he wants to impress Iron Man to become an official Avenger. He tries to accomplish this by taking down a new villain called The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton.

The film received box office success and critical acclaim with a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Is it as good as people say it is? Let me give you my answer on the subject.

This movie is very enjoyable, there were many parts that put a smile on my face. It has a fun, upbeat pace and a good amount of humor. Tom Holland is awesome as Peter Parker, or Spider-Man. I fully believed he was an American teenager, and not a 21-yearold guy from England. I almost prefer him over Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. He is just so a-dork-able, it truly makes it difficult for me to dislike him. In fact, that can be said for several other characters as well. Zendaya, who plays MJ, doesn’t speak often. But when she does, it is memorable.

If you aren’t a comic book fan and don’t know that much about Spider-Man, you’ll enjoy this movie.

However, if you are a comic book fan and do know a lot about Spider-Man, then you’ll also enjoy this movie.

Throughout the entire film, there are Easter eggs, which is a hidden reference in a film, everywhere.

Several of the minor characters are actually real characters in Marvel Comics, such as Herman Schultz, oth-

erwise known as The Shocker, and Aaron Davis, who is the uncle of Miles Morales.

In the comics, Morales is the second Spider-Man, taking over after Peter Parker is killed.

Some fans might still be annoyed by this film; not because of its quality, but because it’s the sixth Spider-Man movie to come out in 15 years. It can get a bit repetitive. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” does do a good job of being different from its predecessors.

Not only does it have other Marvel characters, but it also doesn’t show Spider-Man’s origin story. Two of the other five films showed Peter Parker becoming a superhero. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” wisely avoids showing that, since after all, you don’t have to be a comic nerd to know about the spider bite and uncle Ben. Also, Michael Keaton gives a good performance, but he’s basically playing the role of “Birdman” (2014) again.

This movie is a smart, well made blockbuster. But still, it’s a blockbuster. And it has a few clichés that are to expected in a blockbuster. It’s not a movie that a more sophisticated viewer would necessarily like. Of course, most people would expect that from a superhero movie in the first place. The film isn’t all action either.

There are plenty of moments for talking.

In truth, there’s a great deal of heart to this movie. Most of the jokes are funny, but there a few that aren’t the best. Despite its high quality, I don’t feel it’s quite ‘93 percent’ either, but few films are. Now the portrayal of high school isn’t the most realistic. Of course, it’s much better, and more thoughtful, than how most movies portray it to be.

If you want see a good superhero film, or just a simple blockbuster, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is worth watching. I think it’s one of the best movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could even give “The Avengers” or “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” a run for their money. I had a good time watching this movie.

Plus, seeing Spider-Man side by side with Iron Man makes the inner kid inside me cry out with joy.

Marvel added another good one in the books with “Spider-Man: Homecoming”.

Recycling is a cause that people champion even though many people haven’t the slightest notion of what happens between the time they drop something into the recycling bin and when that material is – if it is – reincarnated and used again.

Warrensburg does not recycle.

Warrensburg collects recycling.

It’s important to understand that everything collected in Warrensburg is sent elsewhere to be recycled. Or is again sent elsewhere.

Jason Duffey, employment specialist of the Vocational Center at RISE Community Services, said they stopped accepting plastic completely because of the financial detriment it posed.

He said in the first six months of 2016, RISE spent roughly $30,000 in labor and on hauling and shipping plastic.

The return? $700.

“It just got to a point that we can’t sustain it, so we had to make a decision at that point,” Duffey said.

Beyond the financial loss, Duffey said recycling is disgusting.

“The beer cans, the soda cans – it gets so rancid back there,” he said. “Our materials processing unit had a constant stench when we were doing plastic just from all of the juices that would come out of it.

It would get in the machines and in their shoes and in their clothes. It was a horrible, nasty, fly-ridden place to work.

“It was just... degrading.”

Recycling is a business. It’s nice that companies are taking our recycling, but they have to get some type of return.

Marty Oxman, general/site manager of WCA in Harrisonville, Missouri, which takes the recycling collected by Heartland Waste, says one of the challenges is finding an end user for the recyclable materials collected. Some things are easier than others.

Both Oxman and Roger Morgan, owner of Heartland Waste, said they don’t refuse the collection of anything. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do anything with it once it is collected.

“Everyone has their problem child,” Oxman said. “For me, polypropylene is an issue right now.”

Recycling is at the epicenter of environmentalism. Ideally, it makes sense: It keeps things out of landfills and prevents the use of new resources in the production of new items. In practice, however, an argument can be made that the impact of recycling negates its benefits.

“You collect your cardboard at home and throw it in your car or truck and drive it here,” Duffey said. “We take a forklift out to pick it up and bring it in the building. We throw it in a machine that every time we want to compress, we have to hit a button, which then pulls energy like crazy. It’s a 240 (volt) machine pulling energy. We then pull it out of that machine with a forklift and drive it onto a trailer.

Then they send a truck down, pick up the trailer, and drive it all the way to Kansas.

Then it may get sent to Arkansas. It may get sent to Oklahoma.

“This cardboard that we’re trying to save emissions and save the world with, we’re putting a lot of that resource right back into transporting it everywhere.”

RECYCLING, continued from page 10 The world’s population is increasing exponentially. In 1960, the estimated population of Earth was just over 3 billion; in 2017, it’s estimated at 7.4 billion.

The amount of raw material required to accommodate 7.4 billion people is more than what is required to accommodate 3 billion. Therefore, it is impossible, even if everything anyone has ever used has been recycled, that we would be able to abstain from introducing more raw materials.

In our city, recycling is currently based entirely on participation. Those participating are the beneficiaries of good karma, cosmic rewards and the blessings of Mother Nature herself, right?

Maybe not. Some people participating are actually something of a detriment to the process.

If people don’t rinse the items, it can clog or break the machines. If a person

doesn’t sort the items, it takes time and money to do it on their behalf. Handling sharp edges – broken glass, crushed aluminum – and working around bales of material weighing between 400 and 2,000 pounds is dangerous.

Scott Holmberg, executive director of RISE Community Services, said there have been two instances where workers were stuck by hypodermic needles while sorting through the recycling.

Nothing happened to either person, but that is an enormous risk that was unimaginable to anyone a few years ago.

How much money and good vibes from the community is the risk of acquiring hepatitis worth?

Recycling remains a largely privatized business in the Warrensburg area, which makes specific data hard to obtain. Businesses are not obligated to reveal such information, and sometimes they won’t.

I started trying to contact Heartland

Waste, the company that collects most of the recyclable materials in Warrensburg, about six weeks ago. I finally got in touch with them this week via email. I still don’t have much data about their recycling efforts.

There are few, if any, commodities that we cannot obtain within a 45-mile radius, today. There is almost nothing we can’t get on the internet and buy and have shipped to us in a day, maybe two if we really don’t want to pay too much. It seems fantastic, and through the lens of availability, it’s as close to magic as most of us will experience.

But availability requires things to be… well, available. Things have to be packaged and shipped before we need them so they’re there when we want them.

For every item we buy, use, and then recycle its packaging, there are 12 more on the shelf and who knows how many on the way to replace it. Is recycling the

packaging from one item going to offset the production of the packaging of many?

Ultimately, what all of this boils down to is that recycling is an option – a good one that we should utilize with the materials already out there – but it is nothing close to a solution.

At this point, we have a self-inflicted wound much too large to be covered by the bandage offered to us by recycling.

If we don’t reduce the grossly unnecessary amount of these materials we use, recycling cannot keep up – eventually becoming a useless, empty gesture that accomplishes nothing.

In the meantime, we’re making the jobs of the people who are trying to perform this service on our behalf miserable.

Don’t pat yourself on the back too hard when you set that empty bottle aside.

THE TOP 8 MOMENTS FROM SOCCER SENIORS

In the time since the Jennies seniors took the field at the start of the 2014 season, the Jennies have posted a record of 77-5-3.

So, when Jennies celebrated senior day at the conclusion of their 2-1 victory over Washburn Sunday at the South Recreation Complex, the atmosphere didn’t reflect the celebration of a single victory; it represented the appreciation of four years of victories.

As the seniors’ list of accolades was read at the ceremony, it was almost overwhelming to hear the feats that the group had accomplished in just four years.

As if their accomplishments weren’t sufficient evidence, Jennies Soccer Head Coach Lewis Theobald reinstated their impact.

“They’ve been the most successful class in the history of our program,” Coach Theobald said. “They’ve made an impact since the first day they stepped on campus.”

In honor of the greatest class in history of Jennies soccer, I’ve compiled a list of each senior’s most memorable perfor-

mance. While not every memorable moment made the cut, I think the eight that I chose stand out the most.

Abby Rhodes: East Central University vs. UCM (Oct. 6, 2013) While most of the seniors took the field for the first time in 2014, Rhodes redshirted her first season in 2013, making her a senior this season. Over the course of her time at UCM, Rhodes is known for both her offensive and defensive abilities due to the fact that she played both as a forward and defender in recent years.

My favorite moment from Rhodes didn’t happen at either of those positions, though. It occurred at a position that most Jennies fans forget Rhodes played: goalkeeper.

Rhodes found herself in the net on two occasions her first season with the Jennies.

In her game against East Central University, the unsuspecting fan would have assumed that goalkeeper was Rhodes’ usual position. Rhodes allowed just one goal on nine shots on goal. She also accumulated eight saves, the most by any goalie in a single game that season.

Mikala Modiri: UCM vs.

Minnesota State (Nov. 21, 2014) The Jennies seemed to be on a roll at the conclusion of the 2014 season, claiming the MIAA Championship in a decisive 4-1 victory over Southwest Baptist. A 2-0 victory over Central Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA tournament allowed the Jennies to advance to the Sweet 16.

Their Sweet 16 matchup against Minnesota State, however, didn’t go as smoothly as the previous two games.

At first, it looked like it might have been a cakewalk to the next round of the tournament. The Jennies scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the game and appeared comfortably in control. Minnesota State kept the game interesting with goals in the 50th and 70th minute and forced overtime. In the 91st minute Mikala Modiri received a cross and sent the ball flying into the right corner the goal to clinch the game in walk-off fashion for the Jennies. Modiri’s goal allowed the Jennies to advance to the Elite Eight.

Kayla Hamner:

Minnesota-Dulth vs. UCM

(Sept. 7, 2015) Kayla Hamner has been a versatile part of the Jennies defense, serving as both a defender and a midfielder. She helped maintain one of the best defenses in Division II while at the same time accumulating four goals and four assists.

It’s not often that the opportunity comes along to set the pace for the entire season, but Hamner did in her top moment. In the Jennies season opener against Minnesota-Dulth, Hamner received a free kick from outside the box and scored the Jennies first goal of the 2015 season. The Jennies went on to defeat Minnesota-Dulth 6-0 and finished the season 21-2-1.

Megan Woolley: UCM vs.

Northeastern (Nov. 8, 2015) The Jennies entered the MIAA Championship in November 2015 with a record of 19-2 and were on the verge of claiming their second straight title. They defeated Washburn 2-1 in the first round of the tournament and advanced to play Fort Hays State in the semifinals.

SPORTS 13 notched her second assist with a cross to Alex Harms. Her third and final assist of the game occurred when Thompson crossed the ball across the penalty box to Emily Griffen for a goal. Thompson’s three assists tied the UCM record for most assists in a single game.

SOCCER, continued from page 12 The score of the semifinal matchup was tied 2-2 at the conclusion of regulation and in the 99th minute Megan Woolley scored a game winning goal to send the Jennies to the Championship.

This, however, is not Woolley’s top moment. Woolley’s top moment occurred two days later in the MIAA Championship against the Northeastern RiverHawks. Neither the Jennies nor the RiverHawks scored in regulation and the Jennies were forced to play an overtime period for the second time in the tournament. Almost as if it were planned, Woolley once again scored in the 99th minute to secure the Jennies second straight MIAA title.

Baylie Edwards: UCM vs. Minnesota State (Nov. 20. 2015)

Ana Dilkes has 55 career shutouts, so it’s difficult to pick just one top moment from arguably one of the best goalkeepers in Division II. I would argue, however, that one shutout stands out above the rest: the one against Central Oklahoma earlier this season. Dilkes posted five saves in the game, but it was a milestone she reached that made the game so significant. Dilkes’ shutout against Central Oklahoma marked an 11th consecutive shutout by the senior goalkeeper, setting a new MIAA record. Emily Huyck of Truman State held the previous record of 10 straight during the 2000 season. Her shutouts this season also broke the MIAA record for most consecutive shutouts by a team. The Jennies became just the fourth team division II in history to string together 11 consecutive shutouts.

Callie Henshaw: Emporia State vs. UCM (Oct. 13, 2017) Henshaw played three seasons at UCM and served as an essential member of one of the best defenses in Division II. Henshaw and the Jennies defense that let up just 18 goals over those three seasons. While a long list of defensive plays account for Henshaw’s top moment, I elected her recent offensive success.

This past weekend, the Jennies hosted Emporia state. After just 13 minutes of play, the Lady Hornets became the first team of the season to score on the Jennies. Henshaw got ahold of a deflected shot that bounced off the goalie’s hands and sent it into the back of the net to tie the game. The goal was the senior defender’s first of her career.

Almost exactly a year after Modiri’s top moment, Baylie Edwards shined in similar fashion against the exact same team.

Megan Wooley’s previously mentioned game winning goal in the 2015 MIAA Championship advanced the Jennies to the NCAA tournament. The Jennies emerged victorious in their first competition in the tournament, defeating Minot State 2-0.

The victory over Minot State earned the Jennies a game against Minnesota State in the Central Region Championship. The Jennies outshot the Mavericke 14-7 with nine of their shots being on-goal shots. Although they had a more aggressive offense, the Jennies failed to score and the game was scoreless entering the final minutes. With less than three minutes to play, Edwards received a pass from Hannah Pyle and scored from 5 yards out. Edwards’ goal allowed the Jennies to capture the Central Region Championship and advanced the Jennies to the NCAA Quarterfinal match.

Taylor Thompson: UCM vs. Northwest (Sept. 25, 2017) In September 2016, the Jennies were set to take on the Northwest Bearcats for the second time in just nine games. The Jennies narrowly defeated them 1-0 in their first meeting, but Taylor Thompson’s performance in their second matchup made for a wider point margin.

Thompson had her first of three assists 24 minutes into the game after her kick ricocheted off the crossbar and set up Baylie Edwards for the Jennies’ first goal. She

JAYLAN ZACKERY: BREAKING RECORDS ONE PLAY AT A TIME

Jaylan Zackery, wide receiver of the UCM mules, has had some great success this year in his football career, and at the homecoming game.

Zackery broke a UCM record at homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 14, where they beat Missouri Southern 71-22, and became the all-time leader for Mules football in yardage, with two catches for 53 total yards in the first half.

Just one week prior, Zackery became the alltime UCM leader in receptions at Nebraska-Ke-

arney.

Zackery has 2,288 total receiving yards in his career and his 152 career receptions is also the most in UCM history.

“It means a lot, because when I first got here I never really thought I’d be at the top,” Zackery said. “I just kept grinding and getting better every year, listening to my coaches’ critiques, and just getting better every game, one play at a time.”

SPORTS UPDATES UPDATES SPORTS Mules set UCM record in 71-22 victory over Missouri Southern on homecoming The Mules offense overpowered Missouri Sothern’s defense Sunday at Walton Stadium Kennedy Field, putting up 726 offensive yards in the process. Their performance set the UCM record for most offensive yards in a single game.

While a brief glance of the score and offensive production suggests a merciless domination on the part of the Mules, the Mules actually trailed the Lions in the closing minutes of the first quarter 14-10. The Mules, however, scored 55 unanswered points to walk away with a victory in convincing fashion.

Devante Turner was an essential component to this spurt. The redshirt running back led the team with 133 yards rushing. He rushed for two touchdowns and had a touchdown receiving. Brook Bolles completed 15-of-25 passes and threw for 337 yards and a touchdown.

Jennies volleyball sweeps William Jewell The Jennies had a quick match Tuesday at Multipurpose Building. They needed just three sets to defeat the William Jewel Cardinals.

Kasey Hohlen led the team with 12 kills, Audrey Fisher added 11, and Aubree Bell finished with seven. Just one week after being named Defensive Specialist of the Week, Kylie Hohlen accumulated 28 digs. Katie Carlson totaled 11 digs and Ally Offerdahl had 38 assists and nine digs.

The Jennies step back on the court against the Pittsburg State Gorillas at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Multipurpose building. The match against the Gorillas will be the Jennies first of a three-game home stand.

The Jennies shutout streak is snapped The Jennies set a MIAA record for most consecutive shutouts with 12 shutouts in a row. That streak, however, came to an end Friday as Ana Dilkes gave up her goal of the season.

The Lady Hornets proved to be sufficient competition for the Jennies as they snapped the Jennies shutout streak in just the 13th minute. After playing from behind for the first time all season, senior defender Callie Henshaw tied the game in the 40th minute. Less than two minutes later, Abby Rhodes scored the final goal of the contest and secured the win for the Jennies.

The Jennies picked up their second victory of the weekend Sunday against the Washburn Ichabods. Senior Midfielder Baylie Edwards set the tone early with a goal in the 8th minute. Washburn became the second team this season to score on the Jennies as Emily Stauffer tied the game for the Ichabods. Mikala Modiri sealed the victory for the Jennies with a goal in the 54th minute to preserve their undefeated streak.

The Jennies will hit the road this weekend as the take on the Missouri Southern Lions and the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. The Jennies will face the Lions at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 in Joplin, Missouri, and will take on the Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Bolivar, Missouri.

It was reported at 6:05 p.m. Oct. 11 that an individual was showing nude photographs and videos of someone to people on campus. The individual was referred for university discipline.

It was reported at 6:09 p.m. Oct. 12 that a possible drug law violation had occurred in Ellis Hall. K9 Echo conducted a sniff of the hall and indicated the presence of narcotic odor coming from a room.

One of the residents of the room was contacted. Police could not detect the odor of narcotics in the room and the resident would not consent to a search of the room.

The individual contacted will be referred for university discipline.

It was reported at 7:37 p.m. Oct. 12 that security forces at Whiteman Airforce Base requested Public Safety to contact a UCM student in Nattinger Hall to retrieve a fake identification card. The student allegedly said they were given the card by another individual at a bar in town. The identification card was turned in to police at 10:20 p.m.

It was reported at 12:13 a.m. Oct. 13 that police were requested to respond to Nattinger Hall in regards to a domestic assault. The students were contacted at 12:17 a.m. Criminal charges are not currently being pursued. The incident will be referred for university discipline.

Justin D. Repp was arrested at 1:05 a.m. Oct. 13 at the UCM Fraternity Complex on suspicion of possession of false identification.
