NEED TO KNOW Counseling Center Creates LGBTQ+ Therapy Group The Counseling Center is now hosting a LGBTQ+ Therapy Group to assist LGBTQ+ students in exploring life challenges that can arise on a daily basis. The group will provide a safe environment to discuss a wide array of topics meant to help reduce isolation, find support and make life changes. Students wishing to resolve specific concerns or just grow personally are welcome to join. Green Dot Seeking Student Social Leaders The Green Dot program is looking for student social leaders to attend UCM By-

stander Intervention training. The program provides those students with the skills to intervene in high-risk situations, which can be modeled by other students.

Public Safety Teaches Self Defense to Students Department of Public Safety is now sponsoring the nationally-recognized R.A.D. self defense programs. UCM agriculture supporter writes book on her parents’ legacy

he story of the Prussing family is a tale of athletics, politics and empowerment that is captured in a new book by an equally intriguing family member.

Natalie Prussing-Halpin is the co-author, with Lisa Irle, of “The Captain and the Judge: Building Camps, Forts, Dams, Bridges and Character Across the Ozarks” and also the donor of the Prussing family farm to UCM. “The whole book is a tribute to my parents, Max Prussing and Natalie Wilson-Prussing,” she said.

Natalie said Wilson-Prussing, her mother and the Captain portion of “The Captain and the Judge,” was a star basketball player at UCM and Sargent School for Physical Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the first women to be certified through the Red Cross for lifesaving, taught physical education across the Midwest, went into politics and took on various other roles throughout her life.

“You can’t believe the stuff I have that she’s accumulated over the years, and I never went through it until I started putting the book together,” Natalie said.

After playing basketball her whole life, Natalie said Wilson-Prussing broke her ankle while she was coaching in her later years and had to give up the sport she loved. Years later, she asked her mother about her injury and said she didn’t seem too bothered by it.

“I said, ‘Wasn’t it devastating that you couldn’t play your beloved sport, basketball, anymore?’ and she said, ‘Why would it affect me? I wasn’t playing it anymore; I was teaching it!’ Nothing ever got her down,” Natalie said.

Wilson-Prussing also started the first privately-owned girls camp west of the

Mississippi called Camp Carry-On in 1917 in Camdenton, Missouri. She taught young women crafts, sports, dancing and drama.

The camp was open until 1941 when a tornado destroyed it.

As far as her political career goes, she was the Republican chairwoman of the county and a chairwoman for the Republican Women’s Club in the 1960s.

She was also a gymnast, owned a dance studio with her brother and taught physical education at the University of Missouri from 1825 to 1835.

“When she went to MU, they asked her why she decided to come to school rather than join the circus,” Natalie said.

Natalie said her mother never used the term liberated to describe how she was able to succeed in a time that wasn’t as accommodating to women. She said her mother just did whatever she wanted to do.

“That’s my whole philosophy. You can’t say that all these things are keeping you down. You just have to take care of what you want to do,” Natalie said.

Natalie said her father, and the Judge portion of “The Captain and the Judge,” was also a very successful person, serving in World War I with Harry Truman, being a self-taught civil engineer, overseeing the building of Fort Leonard Wood and keeping the Prussing family farm up, which has been running since 1868.

Natalie said the book is not only full of her parents’ accomplishments but also of the lessons they taught her.

“I put down things my father has taught me, and one of those things is don’t buy it unless you can pay cash,” Natalie said.

Prussing and Wilson-Prussing were also graduates of Warrensburg Normal College, which is now the University of Central Missouri.

“They never talked about their accomplishments. They were very humble,” Natalie said.

Natalie said she wants the readers of the book to take away lessons about character, honesty and perseverance.

“You can do anything you set your mind to without money from home or government assistance,” she said. “If you don’t have money, you go out and get a job and then you can do what you have to do.”

Wilson-Prussing died in 1986 at age 93 and Wilson died three years later at the same age.

She started putting the stories together in the early 1990s when she participated in a writer’s circle led by former UCM professor Robert Jones.

“I had all this information, and I didn’t know how to organize it. So I hired and worked with Lisa Irle to help me. She is responsible for putting all of this together,” Natalie said.

Irle has written two books prior to “The Captain and the Judge” about Warrensburg and Johnson County history. She was also the curator of the Johnson County Historical Society for 16 years.

“It has been Natalie’s lifelong dream to have this book about her parents written and I had done books before, so I did some background research and organized these wonderful stories,” Irle said.

She said she was happy to be a part of the book because Natalie’s parents were groundbreaking people, and she thought people needed to know.

“I was surprised myself to learn how amazing these people were,” Irle said.

“People need to know how many lives they touched.”

Like her parents, Natalie has kept herself busy in her 80 years of life.

She studied at the University of Arizona and pursued a fashion buying career. After living in Atlanta with her FBI agent husband, she moved back to Warrensburg in the 1970s and took over the Prussing family farm and its 118 head of cattle.

“I changed out of my pearls and high heels into my cowboy boots and bandana,” Natalie said.

She donated the farm to the UCM agriculture program in 2002 and still goes out there every day to feed the farm cats and keep an eye on things.

There will be a book signing for “The Captain and the Judge” from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 8 in Room A of the Warrensburg Community Center.

Friendship Families program connects Warrensburg to the world

Lifestyle Editor UCM’s Friendship Families program pairs international students with members of the Warrensburg community to form worldwide friendships.

Katie Kim, a junior international studies major, is the intern for Friendship Families, a program hosted by the office of Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support at UCM. She said the program’s goal is to facilitate cultural exchange.

“Some community members will say ‘Oh my gosh, I never knew we had the whole world here in Warrensburg’ or ‘I’ve never met anyone from China, I’ve never met anyone from Saudi Arabia,’ Kim said.

“And when community members can meet people from these places, that’s when the image of these countries begins to change in our community and that’s what’s really exciting for me.”

Unlike a traditional host family that would house a student, friendship families are encouraged to spend time with their students at least once a month. Jenne Vanderbout, the assistant vice president for alumni and development at the UCM Alumni Foundation, was paired with two students during the fall semester. She said she and her husband have hosted exchange students in the past, but their schedules haven’t allowed for it recently.

“The Friendship Families (program), when it was presented, was fantastic because we still got to interact with international students, learn about another culture, share the U.S., Missouri (and) Warrensburg with somebody, but it wasn’t the same time commitment of having somebody living with us for four months,” Vanderbout said.

Kim said every community member is welcome to apply.

“The students have been fantastic and we’ve really enjoyed it and we’re going to do it again next year. It’s fun,” Vanderbout said.

Committee to meet financers next week for Union renovations

Since it opened in 1962, the dynamic of the union has changed over time and therefore the main entrance will too with the addition of a retractable auditorium as part of phase one of the Union master plan, estimated at $7.5 million.

“A student in 2018 is not the same as a student in 1988,” Shari Bax, vice provost for Student Experience and Engagement, said. “There’s always an interest in ensuring that the university is presenting facilities and resources that meet students where they are at… and the university’s ability to do that is dependent on resources – which requires capital.”

That capital is often found in bonds, similar to loans, but from investors. Recently, the University of Central Missouri had two bonds mature: one that paid for the union’s previous renovation in 2015 and another energy saving project bond that was paid off back in October 2017.

Next week, the plan’s committees are scheduled to meet with a bond council and the winning-bid financial advisor company, Piper Jaffery, to establish the timeline of financing the project and develop a proposal for investors to issue a new bond.

Susan Brockhaus, executive finance director for Administrative Services, said PJ advisors help the committee pres-

ent proposals to investors as to why they should invest in the project and how the university plans to pay back the bond.

“There are several finance options that include public offering or private placement. (Bonds) vary in length and maturity, but typically last 20 years,” said Brockhaus. “Annual payments are then paid from a portion of the union student fees.”

The union fee is the largest portion of student general fees according to fiscal year 2018 tuition documents. Making up $112.80 of $444.75 at a flat rate – for nine or more credit hours per semester and $7.38 per credit hour with less than nine hours – per student.

“We are not right now in a financial situation to increase that fee or look to get capital in other ways, but we do have money that we’ve gotten use to paying for these bonds that is now freed up,” said Bax. “So that’s where we started...going through the calculations, it meant about $7.5 million for the total project. If we say we’re basically going to take out another bond, we’ll just keep paying the same amount that we’ve gotten used to paying; using that (fee) to pay for phase one.”

The first phase of the plan would include the relocation of the main entrance currently located under the clock face to the south entrance near the visitor lot, plus a retractable auditorium that would seat around 200 people or a dining capacity of 100 for construction costs. Other softcosts for the budget would include furni-

ture, bringing the surrounding areas up to code and bond/investments acquiring costs.

Phase one is expected to initialize mid to late April when the plan’s bond goes to bid for investors. Once evaluated, the selected investor must be approved by the Board of Governors in the meeting following graduation, most likely mid-summer. After approval, the investors will start an estimated 12-week process before construction can begin in the fall – allowing a year turnaround for phase one’s completion.

This phase touches on a very limited portion of the master plan. Bax said other phases are unknown with the current financial future of the university, but would be guided using the master plan developed

by CannonDesign and KWK architects in the earlier stages of planning that began about two years ago.

“There are limited pockets of capital available right now. The union happened to be one of the areas where we had capital available to provide improvements,” Bax said. “As part of the larger effort for us to make us think ‘What’s next’... we’re constantly improving what we have to provide for the students.”

Bax said the administration is always thinking of what resources are available to make things newer and better for the next set of students.

“It’s part of the big picture,” she said.

Over Christmas break, Disney bought 20th Century Fox along with every property of the corporation. This not only means that Mickey Mouse controls The Simpsons, but also The Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and of course, the X-Men. These superheroes are now owned by Disney, who owns Marvel Studios.

Basically, every Marvel character can now appear in Marvel movies – Finally. This makes it possible for the X-Men to appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but it also marks the end of the original X-Men movie franchise.

X-Men were adapted from the popular comic series of the same name. It followed a superhero team of mutants that fight to save the world from potential threats, all the while fighting against oppression from the human majority.

On the big screen, X-Men became a blockbuster franchise, with eight film entries – nine if you count “Deadpool.”

The qualities of these movies range

from some of the greatest superhero films, to some of the crappiest.

The first movie was released in 2000 and was fittingly named “X-Men.” It starred Shakespearian-trained actors Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto – helping make both actors nerd icons for life.

Also, a controversial casting choice was made on who should play Wolverine. Fans disapproved the choice to cast an unknown Australian actor that is too tall for the part. Comic books fans can be really picky sometimes, but Hugh Jackman was casted anyway, and I think it worked out fine.

The movie as a whole is decent, but it is noted, along with “Batman Begins,” for helping give superheroe films a darker tone. The second entry, “X2,” was important in terms of character development and overall quality.

“Deadpool,” is technically an “X-Men” film and technically Deadpool himself is a mutant. This movie had a hard R-rating, with bad language, bloody action and a lot of raunchy humor. Like in the comics, Deadpool is completely self-aware. He fully knows that he is in a movie, making jokes while looking at the audience.

These movies helped keep Fox’s superhero films afloat, because “Fant4stic” wasn’t helping, which is another terrible superhero movie.

After that came “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which, with its so-so quality, undid all the goodwill from the previous films – they were on a roll too. Because of “Apocalypse,” the momentum of the franchise slowed down, and it was time for the series to come to an end.

“Logan” was the final chapter, and arguably the best film overall. It’s worth noting that many of the X-Men movies were inspired by X-Men storylines from the comics. “Logan” was inspired by the “Old Man Logan” series, and if you thought the movie was violent, the comic books are even worse. Like “Deadpool,” “Logan” had a hard R-rating. In it an aging Wolverine must protect his young clone, X-23, from a shady government program. Despite being filled with brutal violence, it still told a very emotional story and offered a satisfying conclusion for the film series.

I’m still waiting for Wolverine and The Hulk to have their long-awaited showdown. Hopefully the MCU will find a way to learn from past mistakes and feature these beloved characters.

A REVIEW: ‘THE MUMMY’ (2017): THE CURSE OF THE REMAKE

Every year, without exception, bad movies are made. While there will always be good movies, there will always be bad movies to counter. In 2017, audiences were forced to endure one of the worst films of the year, “The Mummy.” – other possible candidates would be “The Emoji Movie,” “The Dark Tower,” “Geostorm” and “Transformers: The Last Knight.”

This movie isn’t worth the price of admission. I’ll be honest, this movie is bad.

It might not be the worst, but it’s still really bad.

Tom Cruise, whose age is starting to show, stars as an action hero that becomes cursed by an ancient, evil mummy. I would give more detail about the events of this movie, but that would require more time than I think it’s worth.

The script feels generic and so do the characters. I will admit, some of the actors do try to give a solid performance, though others just feel bland. Despite a promising opening sequence, it quickly loses momentum and hope for entertainment. Sometimes the plot can feel confusing, and not in the good way because some story elements aren’t explained properly.

predictable, yet the movie acts like you don’t see it coming. At one part, they capture the villain with a half-hour of runtime to go; guess what happens next? At another part, I was wishing the villain would hurry up and kill some people because she was taking too long to sneak up on them.

It’s also not exciting. I’m not sure how being chased by an unstoppable evil force can feel dull, but this movie found a way.

Overall, seeing this movie makes the viewer feel like they have just felt the effects of one of the Plagues of Egypt.

“The Mummy” is one of the worst remakes in recent memory. Though bear in mind, “The Mummy” does not prove that all remakes suck, because “The Mummy” from 1999 is also a remake. Originally, “The Mummy” was first made in 1923 starring horror icon Boris Karloff, and was followed with five sequels. Then in 1959, Hammer studios remade “The Mummy,” starring horror icon Christopher Lee, and was followed by three sequels of its own.

After almost four decades, “The Mummy” was remade again in 1999 starring non-horror icon Brendan Frazier; this was later followed by two sequels becoming a trilogy. So in reality, “The Mummy” with Tom Cruise is a remake of a remake of an-

other remake. And unlike the other “Mummy” films, I doubt this one will ever get a sequel, let alone a cinematic universe.

That’s right, “The Mummy” was trying to start its own cinematic universe, called the Dark Universe. The idea was to create a movie universe with movie monsters owned by Universal Studios. This would have included monsters such as “Dracula,” “The Wolfman” and “Frankenstein.”

Basically, “The Mummy” was trying to be “Iron Man” with monsters. At times it feels like a rip off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For example, it features a secret organization that protects the world and is controlled by a mysterious director – does this sound familiar?

Honestly, this film did have some potential. There were a few interesting ideas; it could’ve been good, or decent at least. But the final product is pretty much a waste of time. I don’t recommend seeing it, even if you do enjoy watching bad movies. “The Room” or “Birdemic: Shock and Terror” may be so bad it’s fun to watch, “The Mummy” is not.

Like an ancient curse, do your best to avoid this movie.

Jan. 18 - Jan. 31 | The Muleskinner

SPORTS UPDATES Jennies bowling notches top 10 finish at Arkansas State Midwinter Classic In their first tournament of the year, the Jennies were able to finish 10th out of 20 teams. Over three days, the Jennies went 5-8 and totaled 12,978 pins.

The final day of the tournament saw teams compete in best of seven matches.

In their first match, the Jennies faced the Maryville Saints in a series that went all seven games. After going up 2-0, the Jennies lost control and found themselves in

a deciding game seven, which they won 201-184.

Their next matchup was another seven-game affair with Alabama-Birmingham where the Jennies again went up 2-0, but saw the lead disappear. UAB was able to clinch the series with a 238-183 win.

The Jennies will be in action again Feb. 9-11 at the Elmhurst/Valparaiso Crusader Classic.

Mules wrestling nine dual road trip ends in St. Louis In the midst of a four-dual losing streak, the Mules will take on the Maryville Saints Jan. 17 in St. Louis. This will conclude a nine-dual road trip that has seen the Mules record only one dual victory.

Following their victory over Newman on Jan. 9, the Mules fell to Central Oklahoma and went 0-3 in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals. Despite not collecting a win at UNK, six grapplers were able to earn multiple wins with red-

shirt freshman Dominique Hampton going 3-0 and improving to 14-10 on the season.

After the matchup with Maryville, the Mules will return to Warrensburg for their first home action of the season. The Roger Denker Open is slated to take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 21 in the UCM Multipurpose Building.

UCM basketball to host youth and school day Feb. 3 Mules and Jennies basketball has announced that their annual ‘Youth Day’ and ‘School Day’ will take place on Feb. 3 when they play the Northeastern State Riverhawks. Area youth groups and schools are invited to come to the game and cheer on UCM. Tip-off for the Jennies is set for 1:30 p.m. with the Mules

set to follow.

MULES BASKETBALL RETURNS TO WARRENSBURG AFTER DIFFICULT ROAD STRETCH

The Mules are happy to be home and ready to play pivotal games in front of their fans. A season high sixgame winning streak came to an end against the team that sparked it back on Dec. 10.

The first test came against Missouri Western in which the Mules resisted a second half surge from the Griffons and won 69-64. A rematch with Northwest Missouri State snapped the six-game winning streak and sent the Mules home wondering what they have to do to dethrone the Bearcats.

The game against the Bearcats was a big step forward for the Mules who lost the first meeting by 24 points, but managed to roll with the Bearcats in their second meeting before going cold and falling 70-61.

Lincoln and Lindenwood will travel to Warrensburg to take on the Mules this week in games that could shape the rest of the season. At the moment, the Mules sit fourth in the MIAA standings behind Washburn, Missouri Southern and Northwest. With four contests remaining against Washburn and Missouri Southern, the Mules can’t afford anymore losses.

The Lincoln Blue Tigers will be in town Jan. 18 with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Blue Tigers have a less than impressive 8-9 record, but their ability to rebound the ball and shoot from range will make this an interesting challenge for the Mules. Look for Maurice Mason to make an impact;

the senior guard has scored double figures in all nine games he’s played.

Lindenwood sports an 11-6 record this season, but is coming off a discouraging 20-point loss to Pittsburg State at home. The Lions should not be judged based off that one game, they’ve given undefeated Washburn perhaps their toughest challenge of the season. Similar to the Mules, the Lions are in a position where losses are unacceptable if they want to make anything out of this season. Brad Newman has been the key to the Lions’ success of late, having surpassed the 20-point mark in his last three games. The Lions will travel to Warrensburg Jan. 20, tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

For the Mules, D.J. Richardson will look to stay hot as he has led the team in scoring over the past two contests with 17 points. Jakob Lowrance is also on the radar after his near double-double against the Bearcats. The key to success in these upcoming games is to shoot the ball well for the whole game. If the Mules can shoot well in both halves, then it will be difficult to beat them.

Winning these games are imperative to the Mules’ success. If the Mules want to compete for a conference championship and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, they need to beat teams below them in the standings.

MULES SIX-GAME STREAK ENDS IN SHOWDOWN WITH BEARCATS byJASON BROWN Sports Writer

The Mules took their season high six-game win streak to Maryville on Monday, Jan. 15, to attempt to hand the fourth ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats their second loss of the season. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 11, but inclement weather prevented the Mules from making the trip to Maryville.

The Bearcats displayed another side of their dominance this season by going punch for punch with the Mules in the first half before pulling way in the second to secure a 70-61 victory and regular season sweep of the Mules.

The first half was a slugfest that saw the Mules up by two points at the two-minute mark. Both teams shot the ball with confidence with identical marks of 63 percent. In the final two minutes, the Bearcats capitalized on poor shooting from the Mules and went on a 5-0 run to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room.

Spencer Reaves and D.J. Richardson led the Mules with 10 and seven points in the first half. Justin Pitts kept his team in the game with 12 and pushed that total to 30 by the game’s end. Richardson finished with 17 points, a team high, he was also 3-4 from beyond the

arc. Reaves cooled down and only managed four points in the second half, but pulled down five rebounds and added five helpers. Jakob Lowrance contributed 14 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.

The Bearcats didn’t forget about the 5-0 run they started in the first half and came out swinging to push the run to 12-0. Starting down three, the Mules faced the first double digit deficit of the game just two minutes into the half. After a 5-0 run of their own, the Mules couldn’t keep up with the superb shooting of the Bearcats who eventually pushed the lead to 16 points.

Beyond their own shooting performance, the Bearcat defense held the Mules under 50 percent shooting with only 17 attempts.

The six-game winning streak ended, marking the fourth loss while meeting with the Bearcats for the Mules. However, this winning streak began with a loss to Northwest, so it’s not crazy to think another can start.

The Mules will be in action this week at 7:30 p.m. when Lincoln comes to town Thursday. The Mules will then host Lindenwood with tip scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Home Guards using the wood drills The Woodworking classes of the Industrial Arts Department made wooden drill rifles for the Normal School Guards. The guns were primarily made by female students of the class, prompting pride from the school that the girls were able to properly replace the boys fighting at the front. The Normal Guards used the fake drill rifles to learn formations and learned how to handle a gun when in battle.

Two Jewish student war refugees from Vienna Students paid and pledged well over the three hundred dollar goal to the World Student Service Fun with a grand total of seven hundred dollars. Very few students or faculty members refused to give. The money was raised for student war relief at home and in foreign countries. The campaign kicked off when Dr. Homer Chin-Chen Loh, a prior war refugee student from China and speaker and representative for the Fund addressed the school.

CAMPUS CRIME It was reported at 7:59 p.m. Jan. 7 that a male student had items go missing from his North Ellis room while home over winter break.

Richard Tucker, 27, was arrested at 7:26 p.m. Jan. 7 after being advised of marijuana odor being emitted from a room in Foster-Knox. Tucker was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.

It was reported at 12:25 a.m. Jan. 8 that an odor of burned marijuana occupied the entire ground floor of Bradshaw Hall. The officer was unable to determine the source of the odor.

It was reported at 2:49 p.m. Jan. 8 that a gray Kia four door in Lot 11 had a permit that

was reported as lost or stolen. At 3:06 p.m., Tip-Top Towing took custody of the vehicle, and the permit was returned to Parking Services.

It was reported at 9:55 a.m. Jan. 8 that a vehicle accident in Lot 28 had occurred. The owner stated that their vehicle was struck while parked in the lot by another vehicle that had hit a patch of ice and slid into the car’s bumper.
