June 1996 Washington, D.C. MU LAMBDAChapter. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated
The Second Annual Beautillion and Henry Arthur Callis Scholarship Fund Gala was an event to be remembered. It was classy, spectacular and enjoyed immensely by all. Moreover, it set arecord in attendance for an Mu Lambda affair. The Beaux represented Mu Lambda in the elegant style and manner characteristic of Alpha Phi Alpha. Their graceful dancing first with their mothers then with their beautiful escorts was asight to behold. They then “stepped” with the precision of Alpha men. Thanks to Brother Jeffrey Johnson of the Omicron Lambda Alpha Chapter who introduced the Beaux to the art of stepping. Brothers and guests are still talking about this event which overwhelmed and bedazzled everyone. Congratulations are in order for Brother George H. Anderson, chairman of the Beautillion Committee, who was determined to make this an affair extraordinaire. He attributes the success of the Beautillion to acadre of dedicated brothers who worked assiduously. Special commendation goes to Brother Rylan Harris who planned the schedule of activities for the Beaux and who was always present to encourage the Beaux and assist in orchestrating the dances at rehearsals. Mr. Adrian Vincent James, the choreographer, is to be commended for ajob well done. Orchids to Dr. Janette H. Harris, who shared her expertise in many areas! Words cannot be found to express our gratitude to all members of the committee for their painstaking efforts: Brother George H. Anderson, Chairman; Brother Arthur M. Freeman, Sr., Co-Chairman; Brother Rudolph Harris, Chairman Emeritus; Brother Vincent Orange, Chapter President; Brother Julius H. Brice, Chairman, Budget and Finance; Brother Curtis A. Hunigan, Financial Secretary; Brother James F. McDonald, Treasurer; Brother Albert L. Carr, Recording Secretary; Brother John D. Roper, Counselor; Brother John H. Anderson, Brother Ryle A. Bell, Brother Arlester Brown, Brother Horace G. Dawson, Jr., Brother Louis Ford, Brother Jeffrey S. Fleming, Brother Elbert D. Gadsden, Brother Louis T. Harding, Brother Jerry E. Hargrove, Jr., Dr. Janette Hosten Harris, Brother Rylan R. Harris, Brother Morris Hawkins, Jr., Brother William A. Hawkins, Brother Paul S. Hoggard, Brother Alfonso N. Pearson, Jr., Brother Talmadge Roberts, Brother Earl VRoot, Brother William D. Thomas and Brother Robert Warren, Jr.
Mrs. Bernice House, widow of the late Brother C. C. House, one of Mu Lambda and the Fraternity’s most distinguished members, awarded seven scholarships to promising students from schools in Washington, D.C.: Ahmad D. Barnes, Woodrow Wilson High School; Austin B. Brentley, St. Albans School; Garrick M. Graham, Eastern High School; Lauren E. Moten, Coolidge High School; Kenneth W. Roberson, Schools Without Walls; Eddie TRobinson, Schools Without Walls; and Christopher T. Weir, Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. Additionally, each Beaux was awarded a WELCOME

scholarship from the Henry Arthur Callis Scholarship Fund.
At aspecial awards ceremony held on
May 16,1996 in the Heritage Hall of Shiloh Baptist Church, the Beaux were also awarded scholarships commensurate to their efforts. Beau Blair Hall Hayes was named Mr. Beau, first runner-up was Delante T. Hamilton and the second runner-up, Larry D. Harris, II.
Brother Paul Cotton, coach of the Howard University Wrestling Team, is proud of his team for regaining the M.E.A.C. Conference Championship this year. Brother Cotton has been coach of the team for twelve years and looks forward to winning the NCAA Title in the very near future.
Brother Bob Warren was honored at aluncheon on May 5, 1996, along with six other colleagues who retired from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in the District of Columbia. One of the Beaux, Delante Hamilton, surprised him with an essay on “My Favorite Teacher”, which was read at the luncheon. He shared it with those in attendance at the Beautillion Awards Program.
Brother Dn Ryle A. Bell has been elevated to the position of Associate Dean for Academic and Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Dentistry. We have long known of Brother Bell’s outstanding attributes (and keen sense of humor); we are not surprised at his obtaining this post which he has certainly merited.
Brothers are urged to sign up for at least one committee for the 1997 General Convention. Because of Washington, D. C.’s reputation for outstanding conventions, visiting brothers are anticipating agreat experience. To make this amemorable convention, your assistance is greatly needed. Please sign up now!
The 1996 Leadership Develop Institute (LDI) Committee is working to make this year’s workshop even more exciting than in past years. Students literally beg to return each year, regretting that they are limited to one year’s participation. This experience is most uplifting for the chosen high school students of the Eastern Region. Brother Morris, Hawkins, Jr is the Chairman, Brother
William AHawkins, Director and Brother Bob Warren, Program Facilitator.
The First Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at Andrews Air Force Base on August 22, 1996, 2pm shotgun start. All brothers who own businesses are asked to be corporate sponsors for $200. Company name will be placed on atee sign at the golf course. Cost to play is $70.
The question was recently asked: “Do intermediate chapters still exist? Until the mid-1970’s, there were two intermediate chapters, established at the behest of brothers who had recently graduated from college and were in graduate or professional school. In 1952, Omicron Lambda Alpha became the first such chapter, established at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Omicron Lambda Beta was founded in 1954 at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. These two chapters still exist, but as graduate chapters.
Iwas urged to called to the attention of the brotherhood that afew errors are commonly heard during the singing of the fraternal hymn: ...fraternal spirit binds NOT ...fraternal spirits bind; ...scholarship NOT scholarships; and ...we cherish NOT we’ll cherish. If you have other fraternal tid-bits or historical information you would like to share, please contact the editor.
