The Mu Lambda Chapter’s Founders’ Day Luncheon, which was held on December 7, 1996 at Fort McNair’s Officers’ Club, was indeed a testament of honor to the founding Jewel Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Founders’ Day Committee, chaired by Brother Frederick Laney, is to be commended for ajob well done. We were honored with musical renditions by arenowned classical musician, Mr. Elmer Boozer, from New York City. The befitting tribute, the impressive ambiance, and the inspiring message delivered by the guest speaker, former U.S. senator. Brother Edward W. Brooke, made this atruly outstanding occasion.
Brother Brooke, who was appointed Chairman of the Alpha Phi Alpha World Policy Council by General President Milton C. Davis, commended Mu Lambda for its significant contributions to the Fraternity, and challenged the Chapter to engage its intellect, talents, and power in rectifying the plight of Washington, DC government. Brother Brooke emphasized the importance of the Brothers of Mu Lambda becoming part of “the system,” so that we can forge away for the generations of tlie next ^millennium. Sighting the Fraternity’s noted Historian, Brother Charles H. Wesley as ashining example, Brother Brooke underscored the impact that teachers have on the minds of young students. Brother Brooke went on to express how impressed he is with Mu Lambda’s scholarship and outreach programs, as well as its commitment to the community.
In the latter part of his address. Brother Brooke spoke out against incidents of hazing, denouncing it as “barbaric, uncivilized, and obsolete,” insisting the we are “past that stage,” and that we must accept the greater challenges that confront us by leading and remaining in the forefront on issues that affect all of us. Brother Brooke ended his speech by announcing that he was stepping down as Chairman of the World Policy Council and from all other boards and committees of the Fraternity, in order to devote time to completing his biography. We were very fortunate to have been addressed by aBrother, who has earned his place in the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity', Inc. and in the history of this country.
