APRIL 2018

THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE February and March were busy months for the chapter. In February a group of brothers led by Brother Joe Paul, Tim Fitzgerald, Joseph Housey, CC Jones, and myself went and visited 96-year-old Brother Lee Tyler who is in hospice care in Silver Spring, MD. The brother spirits were lifted by the group of brothers who attended and the yellow roses that were given to him by the brothers.

The work of Alpha continued as the education committee that holds Project Alpha and Go to High School Go to College programs at Ballou and Hart concluded their Mu Lambda Mentor & Mentee day event. This program instead of our typical Super Bowl Party was done to raise money to send kids from Ballou and Hart to see Black Panther for free with free concessions. This project that lasted two months and raised over 4600 dollars. The excess money will be used to further fund and support the students at Ballou and Hart through the two programs that we do there.

March was a month of new beginnings. On March 11th we welcomed our newest line Knights of Horus.

Lastly, we ended the month partnering with Beta chapter with the Expungement Fair event they had on March 27th - 28th. The event helps people wipe certain judgments off their record. The event was able to help six people in DC. Special thanks to Brett Allen, Staton Burke, Ed Hill, Brent Radcliff, Tony Wilson, Kobina Yankah for helping Beta chapter with this event.

April is shaping up to be a great month, and I am looking forward to what is in store.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Mu Lambda Chapter Hosted Students from South East Washington DC to a FREE Private screening of the record breaking Black Panther Movie in Chinatown. The Chapter’s Social and Education Committees combined and raised over $4000 in donations via gofundme.com. Students were treated to a free drink and popcorn. The fundraiser was well recieved in - lieu of our annual Super Bowl Party. Funds are scheduled to be infused into the current Education Committee’s monthly expenses with the Henry Arthur Callis Academy.

BETA | MU LAMBDA - Expungement Fair 2018 THe Brothers of Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter hosted its First Annual Expungement Fair at Howard University’s Armour J. Blackburn Student Center in Room 148/150 on March 27th and 28th from 7pm to 9pm. Special thanks are given to the brothers in the legal field who came out and volunteered their expertise to students and persons in the Washington D.C. area. Bro., Brett Allen ( B 93) , Bro. Stanton Burke (ML 18) , Bro. Edward Hill (ML 11) , Bro. Brent Radcliffe (ML 13), Bro. Tony B. Wilson (B 87), Bro. Kobina (B 99) and Bro. Twane Harris (B 18) were amongst the Mu Lambda Brother who were present and afforded a hand of assistance to the Brothers of Beta Chapter.

Special thanks to Beta Chapter brothers; Bro. Roosevelt Augustine, Bro. Nile Hodges, Bro. Jacob Joubert and Bro. Kelechi Ononiwu for being gracious hosts and stallworth future leaders.

Welcome to April - Alcohol Awareness, Oral Cancer Awareness, and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The health topics we share from the MLHWC are to provide in-sight and knowledge about what are families, friends, and love-ones may be going through. Less Drinking, Yet More Problems: Understanding African-American Drinking and Related Problems Upon examination of the literature on ethnic differences on the rate and course of alcoholism, it is generally found that compared to their European American counterparts, African-Americans report a later initiation of alcohol during adolescence and generally lower rates and levels of use across adulthood. Despite these findings, African-Americans appear to experience more negative social consequences from drinking, experience more alcohol-related illnesses and injuries, and to some extent, are more likely to report alcohol dependence symptoms and/or diagnosis. Although previous research has provided valuable information regarding the general course of use among African-Americans, for the most part, it has failed to identify factors explaining why African-Americans drink less together with why they experience more problems.

Risk of oral cancer in African-American men Men’s Health Week stretches from June 15 to 21, 2015 which provides the perfect opportunity to focus on oral health issues commonly faced by males. This year’s theme is entitled “Moments in Time,” a title that captures the idea of how all moments in life, both big and small, can have a substantial impact on men’s overall health.1 Oral care especially embodies this statement because daily routines and habits are what either prevent or elicit long-term dental health issues.

The Status of Black Women in the United States details these many types of violence. Black women face high rates of intimate partner violence, rape, and homicide. Black girls and women also experience institutionalized racism; they are disproportionately punished in school, funneled into the criminal justice system after surviving physical or sexual abuse, disproportionately subjected to racial profiling and police brutality, and incarcerated at rates far exceeding their share of the population. By drawing on available studies the report helps lay the foundation necessary for positive change.

APRIL 4th 1968 Yesterday - April 4th 2018 Marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of our dear Bro. Martin Luther King Jr. (Sigma 52) Across the country, TV stations, News Broadcasts and the vast majority of users on Social Media paid tribute to “MLK”, remembering the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. America’s current environment forces us as Alpha Men to carry on the torch of Bro. King’s messages and step up to FIGHT for EQUALITY, FREEDOM and JUSTICE for ALL. Reflect, but do not be stagnant! Our pursuit must be relentless one as an organization and as individuals. We must continue to help the less fortunate and encourage growth and togetherness within our chapter, neighborhoods, homes and the nation. We are TORCHBEARERS. The Alpha Train is roaring forward and I emplore Mu Lambda to be the steam in its engine. DCNPHC United for Service Event

When: Sat, April 21, 9am – 12pm

Where: National Mall (meet at the Smithsonian Metro Kiosk on the Mall)

Description: The DCNPHC will volunteer with the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s United for Service initiative. The NPS has arranged a special project for the DCNPHC. We will also paint fence posts and benches. We will start on the Mall and work towards the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
