PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Brothers, each month, I spend much of the President’s message telling you what we did for the month. I want to spend this message thanking you for what you have done -- and will do in the future. Those outside of Alpha Phi Alpha do not understand that we are volunteers. We pay dues to belong this organization and yet we still serve the community as though we are receiving a salary. Mu Lambda brothers continue to show in record numbers at the many community service events held each month. While you could be many places enjoying yourself, you continue to volunteer in the rain and cold to help those less fortunate. Brother Sean Plater created a video to showcase the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable work (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwGUXaNhuN0&feature=youtu.be). This issue of the Torch contains pictures from the 91st Anniversary Brunch – celebrating 91 years of existence for Mu Lambda; Mu Lambda day of worship; Family Fun Day at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site; Henry Arthur Callis Open House; Henry Arthur Callis Scholarship Golf Tournament; The Walk to End HIV; and the 40th Anniversary of DC Home Rule. A portion of the proceeds from the Mu Lambda Masquerade ball held October 29th, is being used to feed 1,000 people for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The theme of the Masquerade Ball was to “Party with a charitable purpose in mind.” While many were able to have a festive and memorable night, they also helped Mu Lambda’s charitable purpose – to feed 1,000 District of Columbia residents for Thanksgiving. If you or someone you know works for the Federal Government, please consider donating to Mu Lambda Foundation (66770) through the Combined Federal Campaign. At a minimum, the taxdeductible donation will be used to assist the youth in the Henry Arthur Callis Academy; feed those less fortunate; and help the elderly with legal matters.
