Project Alpha was held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Hart Middle School in Southeast Washington, DC from 10am-2pm.

Over 25 young men ages 12-15 were present for topics including: The 3 R’s of Manhood: Respect, Responsibility, and Role Models

by Bro. James O. Wilson, Fatherhood/ Sexual Responsibility by Bro. Karl Bruce and Bro. Sean Plater as well as Violence in Relationships by Bro. Karl Bruce.

Bro. Malcolm Carter donated lunch from his Domino’s Pizza franchise. The chapter provided chips, juices, and cookies for the young men. Radio personality, Aladdin from WPGC 95.5 also stopped by to talk to the young men about the importance of following your dreams. The Mu Lambda Step Team performed and Bro. Jason Lee provided an encouraging Spoken Word message.

February was another event-filled month. Brothers of Mu Lambda performed the following community service and/or national programs: The brothers educated and mentored the scholars of Mu Lambda’s Henry Arthur Callis Academy every Sunday; held a Black History program at Rosedale Public Library in North East Washington, D.C. (see page 5); participated in the celebration of Brother Frederick Douglass’ 186th birthday celebration (see page 9); worshipped together at Metropolitan AME Church with Senior Pastor, Brother Ronald E. Braxton; worshipped together at Shiloh Baptist Church with Senior Minister, Brother Wallace Charles Smith; and attended together the showing of the Tallest Tree in the Forest (a story of the life of Brother Paul Robeson, see page 7). On Saturday, March 1st, brothers assembled to celebrate the 80th birthday birthday of Brother Douglass Sands, where Mu Lambda presented his 60 years in Alpha Phi Alpha certificate and a monetary donation. Several members of the Mu Lambda 2013 line traveled to Area III (Anne Arundel, Charles, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County) to observe the ongoing IMDP. I had the pleasure of fellowshipping at the chapter meetings of Kappa Epsilon Lambda (president, Brother Foreman) and Pi Upsilon Lambda (president, Brother Malone). I also had the pleasure of fellowshipping with other chapter presidents of the MAAC (Beta Alpha Lambda, Kappa Epsilon Lambda, Pi Upsilon Lambda, Rho Tau Lambda, and Sigma Alpha Lambda), where all MAAC chapter presidents were invited to discuss working on joint programs and projects. I attended a voters’ forum hosted by Delta Sigma Theta, Annapolis Alumnae Chapter, where Congresswoman Donna Edwards 2

spoke about the importance of getting people out to vote during nonpresidential elections. She reiterates many of the points in Brother Frederick Engrams’ article (see page 4).

Mu Lambda has been doing some hard work this fraternal year – which I am truly proud. It has truly shown its ability to fellowship and exhibit the true meaning of brotherhood.

Brother William Page, who was in the hospital recuperating, had his wife send his check for his dues so he could remain financial with the fraternity. I told Brother Page to call upon the brotherhood if he needed

assistance – like so many proud Alpha men, he was reluctant. During the last snow storm, Brother Page called and said he did not want to be a burden, but if the brothers could assist with his snow removal he would be grateful. Brother Kevin Chapple immediately responded to the call. He informed Brother Page that he was traveling from work, changing his clothes, and showing at his residence to remove the snow. Mu Lambda’s chaplain is always working behind the scenes to ensure our brothers are doing well. During the last chapter meeting, Brother Girard Williams approached me and indicated how touching it was for the chaplain to reach out to him during the death of his brother-in-law.

surgery, unbeknownst to many, but not our chaplain, Brother Butler was on the phone reaching out. Brother Butler has also continued to check on the status of Brother Page and Brother Rhett Lucas. If you know of a brother in need or who has not been present in a while, please let Brother Butler know.

I want to personally thank the brothers of Mu Lambda for having the foresight see into the future.

President Barack Obama recently launched the “My Brother’s Keeper Initiative to build ladders of opportunity for boys and young men of color”(see page 6). Mu Lambda sat down and evaluated the gaps of young men some time ago and as a result of that it developed the Mu Lambda Foundation Henry Arthur Callis Academy. I have received raving reviews of the fine work being done by Brothers Lawrence Clark and Arthur Fields, Deans of the academy.

The young men are tilted “Scholars.”

All will get to meet and greet the Scholars at the April 5, 2014, Black and Gold Gala.

We have to continue to think outside the box and be innovative in the way Mu Lambda interacts with one another as well as the community. In the spirit of thinking outside the box – Mu Lambda is putting the finishing touches on the membership directory.

Are we as a people as political as we think we are?

The sad yet honest truth: It is by no stretch of the imagination, that my response to this question is unequivocally no! There is no secret that the African American population numbers are very dismal in comparison to our Caucasian counterparts as it relates to voting in local elections. For one reason or another, African Americans typically come out in large numbers to vote in national elections and do the exact opposite in local election years. This is the cause for many unfair voting laws being passed as it relates to the African American

One of the topics that she touched upon was in relation to local legislation that is impacting a few of our chapter's members specifically those residing in Northern Virginia who may or may not be aware. The new voter id law passed in Northern Virginia, which goes into effect July 2014 states that: "Any voter who does not show one of the forms of identification specified in this subsection shall be offered a provisional ballot marked ID-ONLY that requires no follow-up action by the registrar or electoral board other than matching submitted identification documents from the voter for the electoral board to make a determination on whether to count the ballot." This is problematic because in cases of an individual who forgets their approved id, they run the risk of their vote not being counted at all.

Ms. Craine and the NAACP will be on the front lines of this battle, and many other pending legal battles as they relate to the disenfranchisement of our people. She has promised to keep the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., in the loop with how we can be of assistance especially with this being a local election year in which Washington D.C. will be electing its new mayor. Black History Program The Brother's of the Mu Lambda Chapter and our Scholars participated in a Black History program held at the Rosedale Library in NE Washington DC. The scholars discussed their plans for post high school, and Bro. Lowery presented about Egypt, African Americans and our connection.The Mu Lambda Pharaohs as usual provided a crowd pleasing and engaging step tease highlighting the Fraternities history, motto,aims and mission.

Initiative aims to keep blacks, Hispanics in school, out of prison

The New York Times reported that on Thursday February 27, 2014 President Obama announced “a $200 million, five-year initiative, My Brother’s Keeper, to help black youth. Mr. Obama added that” the plain fact is there are some Americans who, in the aggregate, are consistently doing worse in our society”. “He also challenged black men to do better themselves, and said they must not make excuses for the poor decisions they have already made”. His support included “leaders from more than a dozen nonprofit foundations and executives from some of the nation’s largest companies”. “Including Magic Johnson, retired basketball superstar, and Gen. Colin L. Powell, the former secretary of state.” The $200 million will be spent “in a search for solutions to the problems black men face with early-childhood development, school readiness, educational opportunity, discipline, parenting and the criminal justice system.”

“Gail C. Christopher, vice president for program strategy for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which has committed $750,000 to My Brother’s Keeper, said the initial money would be used “for hiring staff, consultants and firms to get something established that has legs.” “Rev. Al Sharpton, the television host and civil rights campaigner and Bill O’Reilly the conservative host on Fox news and best-selling novelist attended the event at the White House.”

This program is an opportunity for Mu Lambda Foundation and Mu Lambda Chapter to access= funding for some of our programs. ? Let’s put our heads together to achieve this objective.

Mu Lambda Chapter helps Celebrate Frederick Douglass’s 196th Birthday The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site honors the life and accomplishments of the abolitionist, civil right advocate, author and statesman, Frederick Douglass. In 1877 Frederick Douglas purchased Cedar Hill, and eventually expanded its fourteen rooms to twenty-one, including a library and kitchen. He lived at Cedar Hill for 18 years.

During that time he served as U.S. Minister to Haiti and U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia. He also continued to write and speak out for human rights and equality until his death on February 20, 1895.

On Saturday, February 7, 2014 Mu Lambda Chapter participated in the celebration of Frederick Douglass’s 196th birthday and helped the staff of the Frederick Douglas National Historic Site carry out this year’s birthday theme “Frederick Douglass at Leisure.” Several events took place at different venues in the Anacostia community.

The opening ceremony took place at the Anacostia Playhouse with music by the Washington Revels Jubilee Singers and speeches by the 2013 Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest winners. Events ran all day ending with an evening reception. Alpha Phi Alpha, Mu Lambda Chapter was the only Greek letter organization that volunteered for this event.

Dear Brothers: I would like to thank each of you who participated in the Sunday services held last month.

On February 16, approximately 15 Mu Lambda brothers attended the service at Metropolitan AME Church. An Alpha brother and former Mu Lambda brother, Rev. Ronald E. Braxton, serves as senior pastor.

On February 23, many of you attended the worship service at Shiloh Baptist Church for their HBCU/Greek Sunday. Several brothers are members of this Church. Our own Mu Lambda brother, the Reverend Dr. Wallace Charles Smith, serves as Senior Minister. Please stay tuned for more opportunities to worship together!!

IN OBSERVANCE OF THE HOLY SEASON OF LENT: March 5 -- April 20 We are approaching the Holy Season of Lent, March 5th - April 20th. In observance of this season, I am inviting Mu Lambda brothers to join together and prayerfully engage in the experience of the Daniel Fast for the forty days of Lent--March 5th--April 20th (excluding Sundays).

The Daniel fast is a biblically-based partial fast. Two scriptures give light to the Daniel fast: In Daniel 1, the prophet ate only vegetables (including fruit) and drank only water. In Daniel 10, the prophet ate no meat or any precious breads or foods, and he drank no wine.

MU LAMBDA FOUNDATION, INC. HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS ACADEMY 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2014 FUNDING We are considering and seeking multiple sources for securing funding for the 2013-14 HAC Academy activities. Our 2013-2014 budget indicates that the provision of college readiness support costs the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. approximately $1000 per Scholar. This figure is calculated after considerable in-kind contributions of the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. and Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It should be noted that the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. is designated as a 501c(3) organization and donations from individual, businesses, and corporations are tax deductible.

Sources and sponsorships identified to offset the $1000 per Scholar cost include: 1. Individuals Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., groups of brothers, and individuals in the community can donate to the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. in name of an HAC Academy Scholar to cover the $1000 cost. Scholars can also offset costs through ad sales in the online Gala booklet.

2. Employers of Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Businesses, & Corporations It is common for businesses and corporations to grant funds to donate to 501c(3) organizations for the purposes of supporting educational activities. Some businesses and corporations also match employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s donations to 501c(3) organizations. We encourage Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to inquire at their place of employment to determine if philanthropic funds exist that may support HAC Academy activities. Brothers will be provided support in preparing appropriate applications and documents to secure these funds if they exist.

3. Foundations Numerous foundations grant funds for college readiness programs. Each foundation has its own set of criteria for funding, therefore applications to foundations would need to be crafted on a case by case basis.

4. Local Government Funds The District of Columbia may have sources that support DC Scholars involvement with the HAC Academy.

5. School District Funds Partnerships with school districts and schools can be established to financially support HAC Scholars that attend that particular district or school.
