Every month I get the distinct pleasure of writing a presidential message to the chapter. Based upon research and conversation – brothers wanted specifics of how Mu Lambda reclaims and retains its brothers. In this issue I would like to address Mu Lambda’s approach to reclaiming and retaining its brothers - dues, reclamation, community service, social activities, working with others, and retention.

While Mu Lambda’s dues are no secret because of monthly publication in the Torch – it is only fair to let brothers know how the dues go far beyond the nominal amount assessed.

Let’s start with the fact Mu Lambda is one of the few chapters in Alpha with a house.

Part of your dues support the valuable piece of real estate valued at approximately $1.5 million. While some chapters charge for the repast - there is no extra charge for the hot monthly repast, equivalent to food served at some three and four star restaurants.

The house is the central location for the weekly meetings of the young scholars of the Henry Arthur Callis Academy. Your dues also allow the young men to receive a full hot meal every week. Don’t ignore the annual

contribution to the NAACP, National Urban League, March for Babies, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Your dues assisted with providing approximately 500 box lunches for those participating in the 2013 March on Washington. Mu Lambda consistently sponsors two to three young men for the Leadership Development Program at no charge to the families. Mu Lambda partnered with Phyllis Jones of Annapolis Maryland – as a result of the partnership and contributions

from Mu Lambda’s dues, 357 homeless residents of the District of Columbia were fed on Christmas morning.

In addition to food, those less fortunate were provided new blankets, scarfs, and gloves (pg8).

Your dues assisted in making Christmas enjoyable for less fortunate youth (pg8).

Mu Lambda awarded approximately $20,000 in scholarships in calendar year 2013 to young African American students. So when someone asks about Mu

Lambda’s dues, tell them to look at the Torch and see how you are continuing to make a difference in DC since 1923.

While brothers should know how their financial resources benefit the communities we serve – brothers should also know Mu Lambda provides manpower.

We worked with the District of Columbia Child and Family Services (pg9).

Please review prior issues of the Torch to recap a minimum of 15 community service events since August 2013.

Don’t be confused – Mu Lambda works hard and still finds time to socialize.

We hosted several free social events for brothers and the community.

There was the clean the block initiative which consisted of cleaning the neighborhood surrounding the house, with a free barbeque and school supply give away to the community. There was no charge for Sunday football reclamation efforts.

The holiday social was free to brothers and guests (pg6,7).

We all enjoyed the Congressional Black Caucus social event co-sponsored with Brother Orange. Mu Lambda was host to the DC National Pan Hellenic Council holiday social (pg15) and the Alpha Wives holiday social (pg14).

Reclamation – Mu Lambda through the efforts of Brother Timothy Fitzgerald, membership chair, has added 16 brothers to its rolls: Todd Allen; Kent Benjamin; Ronald Braxton; M. works closely with Beta and its programs.

We supported Omicron Lambda Alpha summer picnic and founders’ day event.

We supported Omicron Eta Lambda during its health initiative and founders’ day event. We supported Eta Eta Lambda during its crab feast and summer boat ride.

We supported Pi Upsilon Lambda during its chartering day event and Men who cook fundraiser.

We will be supporting Delta Lambda and Brother Keith Haynes on January 27, 2014 (see your current page 16). Mu Lambda also had approximately 80 brothers in attendance at the MAAC founders’ day event (pg13).

Mu Lambda brothers were concerned about their health, so we joined the AARP black male fitness challenge competing against Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and 100 Black Men. Mu Lambda finished in first place (pg10). I still like the idea – “the family that prays together stays together.” The brothers held a day of worship on December 8th, where I had the opportunity to observe Brother Jason Clark play the saxophone.

Mu Lambda assigned a blue ribbon task force chaired by Brother LeRoy Lowery, immediate past chapter president and former Eastern Region Vice President.

The task force interviewed former brothers who entered Alpha through Mu Lambda chapter.

The data was compiled and presented to the chapter at the December meeting.

Those surveyed were allowed to present open and honest commentary of why they failed to remain financial and active.

While many might think retention is a matter of telling a brother of his oath – we have found it is a matter of listening to the brother and letting the brother know how his money is being used, what the chapter is doing in the community, what the chapter is doing socially, and how the chapter stands by him in his hour of need – these are things that assist in keeping brothers reengaged.

We have secured a table to support the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha with its fundraiser on January 18th (pg22). We are also partnering with the AKAs for two events on March 15, 2014. During the day we will be partnering for a STEM conference and later in the evening we will be co-hosting a I am looking forward to seeing Men Who Cook event. you in 2014.

Blankets donated to the homeless by the chapter

DCNPHC Toy Drive Update: The last few toys from DCNPHC were picked up today for Kia's Place. We had three more from DCNPHC, which brings our total to about 52 toys for that location. Between DNPHC, Hager Sharp, and a recent donation from Liberty Baptist Church, we collected 112 toys for Kia's Place. The first batch of toys were given out at a party on Tuesday for two locations -Kia's Place 1 and 2. Mr. & Mrs. Banks said the children and parents were SO very happy as they picked out what they wanted. This was a great moral boost for them since many of their gifts are often pre-chosen by a third party. The educational toys were a hit and just what they need. This second batch of toys will be given out at the third location tomorrow.

The toys we donated to Dr. Bear’s Closet were dropped off last Saturday. We donated about 40 toys, which brings our overall total for the effort to about 150 toys. THANK YOU and GREAT JOB!! Thanks again to everyone who supported the toy drive!

The Mu Lambda Pharaoh's step team,headed by Brother Frederick Engram were invited to compete in the "Step your game up" step show hosted by the Nu Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The show is scheduled for Saturday February 1, 2014 on the campus of The George Washington University (Lisner Auditorium).This is the 17th consecutive year of this event with a portion of the proceeds being awarded to two local deserving high school students.Please support our Brothers in this event.

Mandela As I calmly walked the night streets of Cape Town, South Africa, carefully reading street signs so that I could gather my thoughts inside my shared living space with friends, I thought about how fortunate I am to have an opportunity to visit Robben Island the very next morning.

Once I entered, I found my dwelling mates preparing themselves for a card game. I hoped on my iPad to read the days news from the U.S. and I read “18 minutes ago, Nelson Mandela had left this world”.

Amidst all the international media coverage, all the story angles, all the attention on South Africa (the country that I happen to visit to photograph a wedding of a dear friend), I had the opportunity to experience how the locals celebrate the life of their great leader firsthand.

From Robben Island, to Grand Parade Center, to the African Leadership Academy (Johannesburg, South Africa) I observed the love and respect that this nation had for its great leader. Heard stories about how there was still an injustice that prevented the majority from becoming equal to other countrymen. Yet everyone put animosity aside to chant in Xhosa and to dance dances similar to what African Americans share during a wedding reception. I took away from this experience Nelson Mandela’s teachings of love and forgiveness. No matter the country of origin, we can all learn from such a lesson.

Brothers:

I am proud to announce Mu Lambda is the first place finisher in the AARP Black men fitness challenge. The award was a prize of $2,500 to the Mu Lambda Foundation to assist with its youth program.

As a result of your hard work and the assistance of AARP, two young men are receiving full tuition ($1,000 each) to the Henry Arthur Callis Academy. A third young man is receiving half of his tuition in the amount of $500.

Kappa Alpha Psi finished second; 100 Black Men finished third; and Omega Psi Phi finished fourth.

MU LAMBDA FOUNDATION, INC. HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS ACADEMY 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2014 FUNDING We are considering and seeking multiple sources for securing funding for the 2013-14 HAC Academy activities. Our 2013-2014 budget indicates that the provision of college readiness support costs the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. approximately $1000 per Scholar. This figure is calculated after considerable in-kind contributions of the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. and Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It should be noted that the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. is designated as a 501c(3) organization and donations from individual, businesses, and corporations are tax deductible.

Sources and sponsorships identified to offset the $1000 per Scholar cost include: 1. Individuals Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., groups of brothers, and individuals in the community can donate to the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. in name of an HAC Academy Scholar to cover the $1000 cost. Scholars can also offset costs through ad sales in the online Gala booklet.

2. Employers of Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Businesses, & Corporations It is common for businesses and corporations to grant funds to donate to 501c(3) organizations for the purposes of supporting educational activities. Some businesses and corporations also match employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s donations to 501c(3) organizations. We encourage Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to inquire at their place of employment to determine if philanthropic funds exist that may support HAC Academy activities. Brothers will be provided support in preparing appropriate applications and documents to secure these funds if they exist.

3. Foundations Numerous foundations grant funds for college readiness programs. Each foundation has its own set of criteria for funding, therefore applications to foundations would need to be crafted on a case by case basis.

4. Local Government Funds The District of Columbia may have sources that support DC Scholars involvement with the HAC Academy.

5. School District Funds Partnerships with school districts and schools can be established to financially support HAC Scholars that attend that particular district or school.
