The Mu Lambda Super Bowl party proved to be one of the most successful Super Bowl parties that Mu Lambda has thrown. Over 180 people bought tickets and the event grossed over $3000 dollars. The highlight of the event was the spades tournament which featured two strangers in Soror Kim Varner and Mr. Eric Wells pairing to take the Mu Lambda Spades trophy. The two combined to call their team “The Real HU” as Kim Varner is a Hampton Alum and Eric Wells is a Howard Alum. Anyone who is familiar with the rivalry of Howard and Hampton knows that the two schools often bicker over who is the “Real HU”. In other events the Seahawks put a beating on the Broncos in a huge upset in the actual Super Bowl. The Mu Lambda Chapter appreciated all the support of the attendees and many of the guests of the event complimented the chapter on its hospitality.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities is the mission statement of the fraternity.

I have watched two of our brothers (Joel Grey and Frederick Engram), both under the age of forty grow before our eyes. Both are natural leaders, but have shown their ability to mobilize and galvanize the brotherhood. Brother Grey serves on the executive board as the Social Chair, but many forget he is also the Ombudsman for the chapter. He has worked tirelessly bringing the chapter some of the best social events in the history of the chapter. All of the events have been reasonably priced, well attended, and generated a profit for the chapter. He has been cool under fire and put the well-being of the guests first. His service has expanded beyond being social, it has transcended to brotherhood and service for our communities. Because of the great social events, the chapter has built a better bond of brotherhood. Brothers are interacting with one another and breaking the barriers of the old cliques. I see brothers working together who never spoke to each other. I saw our neighbors sprinkled throughout the crowd of approximately 200 at the Super Bowl party. Brother Engram serves on the executive board as the Program Chair, but many forget he is also the step master for the Mu Lambda step team. Brother Engram rolled up his sleeves and gave 100 percent to assisting Beta with its Brother 2 Brother conference. He rallied a group of brothers, where he held weekly strategy meetings to plot a path to success. He employed the same dedication to working with the step team. A step team we should all thank, embrace, and emulate the work ethic. The step team recently 2

competed at Lisner Auditorium and finished third. I do not focus on the placement, because I know the work the brothers did to compete. They met at the house several days a week for months. When others would have quit, they continued to work hard.

More important than the stepping, they built a bond that is as strong as cement. The members of the team are truly their brothers’ keeper. Like Brother Grey, the work of Brother Engram extends beyond the chapter – the step team performs for the community when called upon. They are promoting the name of Mu Lambda with their positive step routines. In addition to performing at

Nu Beta’s scholarship event, the brothers rolled out of their beds on a cold Saturday morning to step in South East D.C. for a project Alpha event Mu Lambda was hosting.

January was an action packed month.

Brothers of Mu Lambda performed the following community service or national programs: The brothers met with and mentored the scholars of the Henry Arthur Callis Academy every Sunday; held a project Alpha session at Hart Middle School; and performed a day on, not a day off of work on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday – feeding those less fortunate than us. Black Christians Region III UCC, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 27th Omicron Eta Lambda’s chapter meeting; Alpha Kappa Alpha Upsilon Tau Omega Chapter Denim and Pearls event; Brother Vincent Orange’s Happy New Year, Happy MLK Holiday, Happy Mayoral Announcement Black Tie Gala Celebration; National Action Network Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast; Iota Upsilon Lambda’s Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast; met with the Eastern Region Vice President to discuss Beta; and we sat and listened to the presidential address from President Barack Obama.

We have to continue to think outside the box and be innovative in the way Mu Lambda interacts with one another as well as the community.

Who would have thought of Mu Lambda stepping and having a DJ? While I advocate for creativity, we must always remember the Alpha brand must always be protected.

Brothers – I have seen unsanctioned things on Facebook. Mu Lambda has a Branding Committee – submit the items to the committee prior to posting. While you may think it is tasteful and indicative of what should be displayed – Mu Lambda is bigger than that one moment of an individual brother. Let us be creative, but also be mindful that we are Alpha men and Alpha men follow established protocol.

In closing, I will see my brothers at the Thursday, February 6, 2014, chapter meeting. Please remember to be on time and bring all of your spare change from home to deposit in the change for charity jars. I will also see many of you at the Mu Lambda night at the Theater on Saturday, February 15, 2014, where we will view The Tallest Tree.

Step Team Performance at Nu Beta Scholarship Step Show Do you think you have what it takes to be a Mu Lambda Pharaoh?! If so, come out this Saturday from 12-2pm at the Mu Lambda house and audition for the team.

Fats: The two basic kinds of fat are saturated (meat and dairy products) and unsaturated (olive oil, nuts, seed oils and some fish oils. Saturated fat (meat and dairy products) should be eaten in moderation. A balance of the healthy fats commonly referred to as Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils are mandatory for maintenance of the central nervous system, immune system, circulatory system and skin health. A balanced source of essential fatty acids (EFAs) is available in hemp seed oil. Hemp oil can be purchased at most health food stores. Other food sources that meet the basic need for EFAs can be achieved by combining seeds.

For example: sunflower and sesame seeds for omega 6; pumpkin seeds for quantities of both; and flax for omega 3.

Carbohydrates are also used as fuel for the body but, like fats, all carbohydrates do not “do a body good”. Carbohydrates come in two forms: “fast releasing” (sugar, honey, malt, sweets and most refined foods) and “slowreleasing” (whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruit); or simple carbs and complex carbs. A diet consisting of 70% complex carbs is recommended.

Current research suggests the following quantities of different food groups be routinely consumed for each meal or as a per cent of total intake for each meal.

70% Carbohydrates 15% Fat 15% Protein While all of us need adequate amounts of these nutrients, adequate is not the same for everybody. Contrary to what you have been programed to believe, by generally accepted approaches to nutrition, the human body is not a physiochemical machine.

Each of us has specific biochemical individuality. Diets that work for one of us don’t work for all of us. I suggest you do your own research to determine your individual needs.

My personal food choices: I avoid eating anything from a can. In addition to the adverse effect of the sodium, sugar and preservatives I consider canned food to be dead food. I also eat lots of organic fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes. Starches include organic sweet potatoes, white potatoes, beans, brown rice and some grains (quinoa is my favorite). My fish selections are salmon and mackerel. I avoid fried foods. I work out four or five times per week. As a result I also ingest various other supplements including a multiple vitamin and mineral complex. I meet my EFAs

need with hemp oil or a mix of pumpkin and sunflower and sesame seeds. I drink one half my body weight in ounces of distilled water daily, more or less, depending on the amount of high water content foods I have eaten that day. Oh…did I tell you, that I occasionally cheat on my diet. If you see me at Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit BAR-B-QUE, with my wife, a maximum of once a month, don’t be surprised. And sometimes I may alter my diet one day each month at a Chapter meeting.

Nutritionists agree that cooked foods partially destroy enzymes, vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, organic acids, phytonutrients and numerous other bioflavonoids.

This observation does not imply that ALL food should be eaten raw. It does imply that selected vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds are more nutritious when eaten uncooked and unsalted.

Conversely, cooking some foods enhances nutrition and health value, is mandatory and highly recommended.

Unless you buy selected organic foods it is difficult to avoid foods that have not been geneticallyengineered, irradiated, and microwaved.

The information contained in these Nutrition Notes is just the tip of the iceberg. For example your ability to digest foods you eat, how you mix foods and the time of day you eat are of equal importance.

Future Nutrition Notes will address these issues.

Regular visits to your physician and an active lifestyle are also of equal importance. If you have a maintenance program for your automobile why not have a maintenance program for your personal health? You can start by becoming more aware of the foods you eat.

So what’s a brother to do?

The point is that eating the right foods and an awareness of how specific herbs and supplements are used can prevent and delay many metabolic malfunctions, absent medical causes. I wish I could say that eating the right food is the answer. If I did I would be wrong.

Wellness Reimagined Through Fitness Challenge

throughout the metro District of Columbia area including Maryland the Black Men’s Fitness Challenge. The 12-week program consisted of teams from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter; Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and 100 Black Men of Greater Washington. The men competed through their individual teams to see who could lose the most stomach inches during the program. The men were guided in the fitness competition by local fitness expert Yohnnie Shambourger, a former Mr. Universe and founder of Yohnnex Sports, Inc. (YSI) located in the Washington, DC metro area.

The Black Men’s Fitness Challenge was a part of AARP’s “Life Reimagined” philosophy that has a goal of supporting individuals to pursue a passion or take a new direction in life. To lead the fitness challenge participants toward success, AARP and Shambourger collaborated on a website where the men were able to create a personal profile. The website contained videos about nutrition, sample exercise workouts, and sample menus. Measuring tapes and pedometers were distributed to track how each man did during the challenge. These tools used throughout the challenge followed the “Life Reimagined” approach offering the men a flexible, step-by-step guide to prepare for the change they wanted see. - Click To Read More

ALPHA NIGHT AT ORIOLES PARK @ CAMDEN YARDS We're working to coordinate Alpha Night at Camden Yards to see the Baltimore Orioles at a home game during the same time as the 2014 Eastern Region Convention. The Baltimore Orioles are scheduled to play the Kansas City Royals at7:05pm on Friday April 25, 2014. Brothers interested in attending the game should indicate their seating preference based upon the following options.

Seating Option No. 1 (SUITES) - A Single Game Suite (for 14) or a Party Suite (for 50 - 75) which would cost approximately $100 per Brother (or attendee) to cover the suite and all the food, snack, and beverages during the game. If we can manage the party suite you'll receive the biggest value for your buck.

Seating Option No. 2 (GROUP SEATS) - We would purchase a minimum of 15 tickets in the price range of $10 - $45 for the game; with very good seats available for $23 - $29.

It should be mentioned that with group seating Alpha Phi Alpha would be recognized on the jumbotron during the game.

Rev Jonathan Newton who is a Kappa and one of the senior ministers on the ministerial staff at Metropolitan AME Church contacted me and informed me of the churchʼs plans to hold a special service on Sunday, 2/16/14, at 11:00 a.m. to recognize the collective contributions of the Divine 9 organizations in the advancement of Black people in the USA as part of their Black History Month Celebration.

The church is holding this event in conjunction with the Bethel Literary and Historical Society (http://us.wow.com/wiki/ Bethel_Literary_and_Historical_Society) and the churchʼs program coordinator for this event is Renee Reed (member of AKA). The sermon will be delivered

by Rev Newton and plans are to recognize and provide a certificate to each president of the sixteen member chapters for which the existence of the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Washington, DC is based on. More details on this event are forthcoming, but in the meantime it is requested that you share this information with your membership for support of this event. It is hoped that there would be a large Greek presence during the service to show appreciation to the churchʼs congregation for such a recognition. Please advise if you or someone who will represent you will be in attendance for planning purposes.

MU LAMBDA FOUNDATION, INC. HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS ACADEMY 2013 – 2014 FUNDING We are considering and seeking multiple sources for securing funding for the 2013-14 HAC Academy activities. Our 2013-2014 budget indicates that the provision of college readiness support costs the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. approximately $1000 per Scholar. This figure is calculated after considerable in-kind contributions of the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. and Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It should be noted that the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. is designated as a 501c(3) organization and donations from individual, businesses, and corporations are tax deductible.

Sources and sponsorships identified to offset the $1000 per Scholar cost include: 1. Individuals Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., groups of brothers, and individuals in the community can donate to the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. in name of an HAC Academy Scholar to cover the $1000 cost. Scholars can also offset costs through ad sales in the online Gala booklet.

2. Employers of Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Businesses, & Corporations It is common for businesses and corporations to grant funds to donate to 501c(3) organizations for the purposes of supporting educational activities. Some businesses and corporations also match employee’s donations to 501c(3) organizations. We encourage Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to inquire at their place of employment to determine if philanthropic funds exist that may support HAC Academy activities. Brothers will be provided support in preparing appropriate applications and documents to secure these funds if they exist.

3. Foundations Numerous foundations grant funds for college readiness programs. Each foundation has its own set of criteria for funding, therefore applications to foundations would need to be crafted on a case by case basis.

4. Local Government Funds The District of Columbia may have sources that support DC Scholars involvement with the HAC Academy.

5. School District Funds Partnerships with school districts and schools can be established to financially support HAC Scholars that attend that particular district or school.
