President’s Message As I celebrated Thanksgiving, I constantly thought of those who are less fortunate. I am thankful for all I have and the family who have cared for and nurtured me during the years (biological and fraternal).

On December 4th, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated will be celebrating 107 years of existence, where Mu Lambda has been around for 90 of those years. To commemorate the 107th existence, 76 Mu Lambda brothers (see page 4) will join with approximately 124 other brothers from the MAAC for the annual MAAC Founders’ Day event.

Let’s start with our November recap.

Brothers of Mu Lambda participated in the AARP black male fitness challenge.

Brothers of Mu Lambda traveled to Baltimore to assist with intake for Area VI chapters Omicron Eta Lambda and Nu Beta. Brothers of Mu Lambda performed community service at the Capital Area Food Bank (see page 5) and the Marian House Shelter for Women. Brothers of Mu Lambda supported the Pi Upsilon Lambda fundraiser. Brothers of Mu Lambda attended Beta’s Alpha week and also worked with Beta’s Brother 2 Brother conference. Last but not least, Mu Lambda paid its last respects to Brother Thomas Hoyt at his Omega service.

December is another event packed month. The chapter meeting is December 5th attending the MAAC Founders’ Day event the morning of December 7th. Later that night brothers will be dancing the night away at the Muse Lounge (see page 12). Mu Lambda will be celebrating with the DC Pan Hellenic Council on the 12th, it will be holding its annual holiday social at the Mu Lambda House. the 14th – the Alpha Wives event will also be held at the Mu Lambda House.

Mu Lambda will also be performing community service at Child and Family Services Agency on the 14th. Mu Lambda will host its holiday social on Friday, December 20th at the Mu Lambda House (the event is free). In the spirit of taking care of those less fortunate than us, Mu Lambda will be donating blankets to the homeless.

I received an email last week. First, I am going to tell you about it and second I will tell you why it is relevant to us (Mu Lambda). I was surprised to find a Newsweek article listing the best college fraternities. Alpha Phi Alpha

was the only African American fraternity listed in the top ten of all fraternities. Newsweek indicated its criteria were the number of members who are currently members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the alumni, if any, who became president. Lastly, it considered the amount of money the fraternity’s non-profit fund donated to 501(c)3 organizations. I found that impressive, but since I am far removed from college, I wanted to see how Alpha was viewed outside of the college ranks.

I conducted a search and found greekrank.com. The site listed Alpha Phi Alpha as the largest fraternity in the category of cultural and honors

fraternities. It goes further to indicate the size of a fraternity is an important consideration when deciding to rush. It indicates an overall larger Greek organization provides more opportunities for networking with alumni. It lists Alpha as having 783 chapters.

The significance of the two articles is that the articles are outside the African American media – I guess some would refer to it as mainstream media. The same way someone forwarded me the article because they know I am a member is the same way employers and potential donors research us. While Mu Lambda may not focus on the number - it is significant to our potential donors that we are the third largest chapter in Alpha with a membership where 54 percent of the chapter members are life members.

They care about the diversity – it matters that 3% of the members are age 90-99; 10 % is age 80-89; 16% is age 70 -79; 7% is age 60-69; 15% is age 50-59; 20% is age 40-49; 15 is age 30-39; and 12% is age 29 and younger. It is also significant to them that 3% of the members have 65 or more years in the fraternity; 21% have 50-64 years; 24% have 25-49 years; 34% have six-24 years; 10% have one to five years; and 8% have less than one year in the fraternity.

Last but not least it also matters that Mu Lambda’s membership is comprised of brothers made in 87 different chapters. Why is it significant – because it shows stability and flexibility - it shows the chapter has members from diverse parts of the country, with diverse backgrounds, and diverse ages. You read about the work Mu Lambda is doing every month – if not, review your summer, September, October, and November editions of the Torch. Mu Lambda has worked in all four quadrants of the city (North East, North West, South East, and South West). We have worked with the young and old. We are hosting activities for the young, old, and the in between. We are doing community service projects several times a month. We are mentoring, feeding, and educating our youth weekly. We are participating in wellness programs, exercising, and monitoring our diets as a group.

We are socializing with other brothers and chapters. We are reclaiming brothers back into the fold. We are working with and mentoring our college brothers. We are conducting all of the national programs. We have honored every family’s request for an Omega service. Our chaplain has remained in contact with the sick and shut-in. We are active and involved with the Pan Hellenic Council. We are partnering with sororities. We are a large but diverse chapter. I can honestly say we are doing the work of Alpha.

I wish I could take credit for all of the good things happening in Mu Lambda, but I cannot – it was the past presidents of Mu Lambda who did the hard work, I am just enjoying the fruits of their labor. I know a lot of brothers don’t like the pomp and circumstance of some things, but I would like to take an executive privilege at each chapter meeting and allow all of past presidents of the chapter be recognized as they enter the room.

I think I speak for most of you when I say I am proud to wear my black and old gold. During my short tenure as the chapter’s president, I am greeted with enthusiasm and congratulations about the hard work you brothers are doing. I constantly hear about the community service, Brothers’ Keeper, Henry Arthur Callis Academy (formerly the beautillion), our chaplain, our reclamation, our house, and our step team. Brothers consistently tell me how the Mu Lambda brothers are leaders and how many of you have impacted their lives inside and out of Alpha.

First and foremost, I want to thank you for your hospitality and assistance you displayed towards me at the Mu Lambda chapter meeting I attended around the 90th year celebration of the charter. Since then, I have run into numerous brothers across D.C. who work in various fields, brothers from the Beta Chapter at Howard, and others who have great things to say about Mu Lambda. On a personal note, as a recently May 2013 graduate from Georgia State University, my funds are not at their best state since I just graduated and only receive such an amount from my stipend with Americorps. I applaud the professionalism and prestige Mu Lambda carries itself with and in my desire to remain active, I would love to pursue becoming an alumni member with this chapter. I wanted to ask you who I can speak with to understand what the final cost would be for me to join Mu Lambda but I am definitely interested in joining Mu Lambda and seeing how I can be active within any committees and projects. This past month, Brothers from the Mu Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. came out to volunteer for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters (MAAC) community service project. The MAAC community service project took place at the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB). The event occurred on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 8:30 am to 12pm. Brothers present assisted in sorting non-perishable food items and assisting CAFB in some of their grounds crew projects.

The food items sorted were then packaged to be distributed to families in need. Of the Alpha Phi Alpha chapters participating in the community service project, Mu Lambda had the largest representation of Brothers present.

On behalf of Mu Lambda, the community service committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the MAAC community service project.

21st Annual Brother to Brother Youth Conference On Friday November 15,2013 the 21st Annual Brother to Brother youth conference was held on the campus of Howard University. The program was entitled "Breaking the Cycle:Empowering Students of Color" and hosted students from local Washington DC middle and high schools including Shaw Garnett Patterson,Howard MS2,Cardoza,Washington Metropolitan,and Banneker. The brothers of Beta,and the Mu Lambda Programs committee worked tirelessly over the past few months headed by Brothers Blair Matthews and Frederick Engram. The event began at 8:15 am, and concluded at 3:00 pm. Topics included discussions centered around Appropriate dress attire,Self employment,Black Men in America, College education and Admissions with a keynote address delivered by Beta alum Brother Chris Tyson. Numerous awards, scholarships,and prizes were given to students who participated throughout the day and submitted the most captivating of essays. It was a job well done by the brothers.

The Mu Lambda Pharaoh's step team,headed by Brother Frederick Engram (Alpha Omicron chapter initiate) were invited to compete in the "Step your game up" step show hosted by the Nu Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The show is scheduled for Saturday February 1, 2014 on the campus of The George Washington University (Lisner Auditorium).This is the 17th consecutive year of this event with a portion of the proceeds being awarded to two local deserving high school students.Please support our Brothers in this event.

Testament to the Academy Brothers, As you may know my son Jabari is now at Howard. We got together for dinner on Sunday evening. While he did not recall his name, he said that he recently ran into one of the neophyte brothers while on campus recently and they talked for about 45 minutes. He said he was one of the brothers that he met while going through the Beau program last school year. Unsure what they talked about but he seemed very positively influenced by the discussion. When you are 18, someone in their early 20's in grad or professional school possesses a wealth of knowledge.

I am sure that both of you recognize this, but the program does a lot of good for these young men. It gives the high school seniors a chance to work with, and learn from, the brothers. It also gives the brothers an opportunity to pour into these young men.

I just wanted you to be aware that for the kids like my son who go to Howard, the benefits of the program extend well beyond the beautillion. In fact, Jabari says he frequently runs into a number of the Mu Lambda brothers on campus and they often speak and talk if only briefly.

Project Alpha Project Alpha will hold it's first annual Young Scholars Discussion entitled "Real Talk About a Tough Walk." To take place from 10am - 2pm Saturday December 14, 2013 at Hart Middle School in Southeast D.C. The event will include discussions ranging from Manhood, Fatherhood, and Responsibility to STD information on resources were teen and go to get HIV and STD screenings free in the District of Columbia. Lunch will be provided for the youth and all are encouraged to come out and support. Brother Karl Bruce is the Chair of the Committee and POC for Project Alpha.

MU LAMBDA FOUNDATION, INC. HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS ACADEMY 2013 – 2014 FUNDING We are considering and seeking multiple sources for securing funding for the 2013-14 HAC Academy activities. Our 2013-2014 budget indicates that the provision of college readiness support costs the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. approximately $1000 per Scholar. This figure is calculated after considerable in-kind contributions of the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. and Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It should be noted that the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. is designated as a 501c(3) organization and donations from individual, businesses, and corporations are tax deductible.

Sources and sponsorships identified to offset the $1000 per Scholar cost include: 1. Individuals Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., groups of brothers, and individuals in the community can donate to the Mu Lambda Foundation, Inc. in name of an HAC Academy Scholar to cover the $1000 cost. Scholars can also offset costs through ad sales in the online Gala booklet.

2. Employers of Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Businesses, & Corporations It is common for businesses and corporations to grant funds to donate to 501c(3) organizations for the purposes of supporting educational activities. Some businesses and corporations also match employee’s donations to 501c(3) organizations. We encourage Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to inquire at their place of employment to determine if philanthropic funds exist that may support HAC Academy activities. Brothers will be provided support in preparing appropriate applications and documents to secure these funds if they exist.

3. Foundations Numerous foundations grant funds for college readiness programs. Each foundation has its own set of criteria for funding, therefore applications to foundations would need to be crafted on a case by case basis.

4. Local Government Funds The District of Columbia may have sources that support DC Scholars involvement with the HAC Academy.

5. School District Funds Partnerships with school districts and schools can be established to financially support HAC Scholars that attend that particular district or school.

The chapter chair drive project needs your support. The Mu Lambda Foundation is accepting tax deductible donations in the amount of $100 per chair. You don’t have to be a Brother to make a chair donation: Alpha wives, friends and families are also encouraged to participate.
