The President’s Message
Greetings Brothers,
Generally speaking November is known for two things in the U.S. – voting and thankfulness. The latter generally associated with the Thanksgiving holiday. But at its core really is about being thankful for those things in one’s life. Needless to say I am thankful for you Brothers and what you do to contribute to my life, each other and to those known and unknown to you. I am also hopeful that for those whose are positively impacted by the reach of the men of Mu Lambda that they too are thankful for their unknown and stalwart benefactors.
In regards to the former, (voting), of course this august body of men know the value of voting and also the high import of a politically literate and savvy populace. Performing the act of voting without a functional political IQ leaves one to be easy prey to support concepts and ideas with their ballot that is not in their best interest. I would hope that when we execute our Voteless People is a Hopeless People national programs that we go beyond the act of registration for voting but also include the raising of the political IQ of the populace. This is without regard to a political party or ideology.
Carry on Brothers.
Fraternally,
Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President 2022 - 2023

MU LAMBDA Community Service
MU LAMBDA IS SERVICE
The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter are ushering in the Fall season with celebration and community service to the communities in DC. On Saturday, October 1 the brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter celebrated their 99th charter day. The day consisted of service and highly anticipated fellowship.
On Saturday, October 8, 2022 Mu Lambda Day of Service for the Bloomingdale community. This community service event was in partnership with Good Health WINs, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing transparent information about health needs and innovations for Women’s Immunizations Networks. Brothers from Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter, as well as members of the Bloomingdale community worked together to assemble and distribute emergency feminine hygiene kits for women in DC.
In addition to the emergency hygiene kits, brothers also participated in a community beautification project at the Mu Lambda Foundation House on Alpha Phi Alpha Way. The brothers Mu Lambda Chapter have not only made a commitment to uplifting communities in DC, but to uplifting communities throughout the country as well. On Friday, October 21, the brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter and the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Lambda Chapter to collaborated to combat the water crisis occurring in Jackson, Mississippi.
The brothers of Mu Lambda were able to provide the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Chapter with 96 cases of water. Although the
seasons may change, Mu Lambda Chapter’s dedication to service and love for all mankind will not. Mu Lambda will continue to exhibit a standard of excellence as it prepares to enter the holiday season and the start of the centennial year.

By - Brother M. LaRocheWhite Supremacy LIVES ON...
THE WHITE SUPREMACY OF TRUMP GOES ON by Bro. Austin R. Cooper, Jr.
The cancer that is racism and white supremacy are alive in American politics, and the disease has metastasized since the 2016 presidential elections. Actually, if we are getting to the root of this most recent occurrence, we must return to 2008.
That the American people elected a Black man with a blatantly “foreign” name to the White House was an unforgivable sin for far too many. Staining the White House with a Black familywas far too much for many people to stomach what they saw as a stain on democracy, decency and the ultimate political achievement. The sin to them was simply unpardonable. Had President Barack Obama not been elected and served two terms, the segment of American people who were undone by the sin would have never sunk so low as to elect Donald J. Trump to The White House. Even the most ignorant of racists would have laughed and said, “Oh Hell No!” to the man whose reputation was solidly built on lies, ridiculous braggadocio, questionable business practices, and a morally corrupt personal character.
Hillary Rodham Clinton won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College. Even conceding that she ran a poor campaignfailing to spend enough time in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Nevada with frequency doomed her campaign. And yes, racism fueled the election of 2016. Sexism added its part as well. And racism is fueling the 2022 midterms, and likely will again in 2024. Certainly, sexism will again be a factor. I remember feeling mentally and spiritually exhausted. I prayed for relief from the madness. By November 2020, after four years of enduring daily outright
racism being promoted by the now-former occupant of the Oval Office, I recall feeling as if the plague I was suffering from PTS (Post-Trump Syndrome) was as terrible as the ones Moses set upon Egypt before the Exodus.
Before the election, I was suspicious about whether Trump would even concede if he lost. During those seventy-eight days between November 3rd and the inauguration, I had a frightful premonition of a federal standoff with a defeated president refusing to leave office. I worried, might he even start a nuclear war as a final belligerent denial? On the afternoon of January 6, 2021, I was on a conference call, periodically glancing up and listening to speeches by President Trump and others. I was not surprised by the commentary by anyone on the screen, including Trump. Everyone, including Trump, was enraged, frustrated, and too comfortable with lying and repeating disproven allegations of rampant election fraud.
I remember his supporters swarming the U.S. Capitol and soon began assaulting and overpowering law enforcement officers to overtake the building. I stopped listening to my conference call confused about how my television had switched from cable news to Netflix. I quickly and sadly realized that I was witnessing no movie, but real Trump TV featuring an insurrection inside the nation’s capital - at the very seat of our democracy, not by some foreign enemy, but by American citizens and alleged “patriots.”
Some 2,000 clearly uncivilized individuals were storming the Capitol, urinating and defecating the sacred halls I’d first walked as a congressional intern in 1980, and later walked as a staffer to three Members of Congress. The very same halls I continued to walk, representing clients. I was sickened and disgusted to see this. What so-called “American patriot” would treat the Capitol this way? All for the edification and honor of a deranged president who had lost...
White Supremacy LIVES ON...
THE WHITE SUPREMACY OF DONALD J. TRUMP GOES ON election. Trump makes former President Richard Nixon look like a saint. The Watergate break-in and subsequent coverup all pale in comparison to the criminal investigations which have engulfed him. From his pre-presidency, his single term in the White House and at Mar-a- Lago, and post-reelection failures. This immoral, racist, criminal manages to maintain a stronghold over the current GOP.
The twice-impeached Trump has now been subpoenaed to testify before the Jan. 6 Congressional Committee. Here’s what I know. Had President Obama been responsible for leading an insurrection against the government that he had sworn to “preserve, protect, and defend,” he would have been impeached, removed from office, disbarred, charged with treason, and jailed. At least. Even by a Democratically controlled Congress. Had Obama been caught on tape mocking grabbing women by their private parts, his presidential campaign would have immediately ended. He would have had to resign in disgrace from the Senate. If top secret classified documents had been found in his home, and Obama had refused repeated requests for their return to the National Archives, as has Trump, there’s no question that he would be in jail, his home searched, and those documents reclaimed.
Yet Trump remains free. And a viable candidate for president in 2024. What possible argument could support this scenario other than white supremacy?
What is it? I’m listening.

Health & Wellness| BROs KEEPER
In recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month (November) 2022, let us pause and take assessment of our preparedness for an unexpected or already existing serious illness or end-of-life circumstance. Do you know about advance directives? Have you completed yours? Are you considering who to delegate as your healthcare proxy, sometimes called a healthcare or medical power-of-attorney? Or has a family member or a close friend asked you to serve in such capacity?
As a board-certified Hospice and Palliative Medicine physician, I am frequently involved in conversations with patients and families, who are dealing with serious illness or who are dying, to better understand their values and expectations to ensure that the medical care that is being received is congruent with their values and goals. As you might imagine, emotions and tensions are heightened and rationality and sound judgment often wane during the stress of a medical crisis or emergency. Therefore, it is reasonable and advised to have conversations about medical planning, in which you consider the extent of care that you might desire, in advance of a serious or life-limiting disease. This is the role of advance care planning – to review, discussion, and complete an advance directive.
An advance directive is sometimes called a Living Will. It is a document that outlines and allows you to decide what treatments you would want and those that you would not want in situation of a terminal disease where death is imminent, an end-stage disease, or if you are in a persistent vegetative state. In addition to choosing the medical treatments and interventions that you would desire, an advance directive also allows you to name a person to make medical decisions on your behalf in the event of your incapacity. However, to designate a medical power-of-attorney, you have to have capacity to make such decision and designation – you cannot be in a coma or have advanced or end-stage dementia, for example, that would render you incapacitated and unable to participate in such medical decision-making. All too often attempts by family members to obtain a medical power-of-attorney for their loved one occurs when their loved one is incapable of making the designation and decision.
Be courageous and have these touch conversations with your family in the absence of any dire or emergent situation.

DIABETIES AWARENESS
“Diabetes is truly the epidemic of our time,” says James Gavin, M.D., chief executive officer and medical officer of Healing Our Village, an Atlanta-based advocacy company. “Ebola’s important. HIV/AIDS is important. But diabetes is the epidemic of our time. No organ is spared with diabetes.
• One person dies every 10 seconds from the ravages of diabetes. With diabetes, strokes, heart attacks are more common
• It is a major chronic disease that drives our trillion-dollar health-care budget
• Diabetes favors minorities. It simply likes to be in us. This is important because when you look at the outcomes, amputations are more common in African Americans
• Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in diabetes, and premature death from coronary heart disease is greater in African Americans than in whites, Hispanics, and Asians.
• The companion epidemics are diabetes and obesity. Body mass and weight gain are the leading contributors to the formation of diabetes. The higher your body weight, the more likely you’ll develop diabetes.
Approximately 111 million U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Though researchers can’t say for sure diabetes causes depression and they don’t fully understand the diabetes-depression connection, multiple studies conclude people with diabetes are at heightened risk of developing the mood disorder. A Harvard Medical School study went a step further, suggesting insulin resistance may alter brain chemistry to make diabetics more susceptible to it.
Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease and stroke by accelerating the development of clogged and hardened arteries. Foods containing the following can work against your goal of a heart-healthy diet and should be avoided:
• Saturated fats. High-fat dairy products and animal proteins such as beef, hot dogs, sausage, and bacon contain saturated fats.
• Trans fats. These types of fats are found in processed snacks, baked goods, shortening and stick margarines. Avoid these items.
• Cholesterol. Sources of cholesterol include high-fat dairy products and high-fat animal proteins, egg yolks, liver, and other organ meats. Aim for no more than 200 milligrams of cholesterol a day.
• Sodium. Shoot for less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. However, if you also have hypertension, you should consume less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day.
COPD MONTH 2022
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)Month
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that affects millions of Americans. It refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and in some cases asthma.
More than 12 million people in this country have COPD. That means they live with constant coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. But another 12 million Americans don’t even know they have COPD. For them recognizing the signs of this serious lung disease and seeking help is crucial.
COPD symptoms often don't appear until significant lung damage has occurred, and they usually worsen over time, particularly if smoking exposure continues. For chronic bronchitis, the main symptom is a daily cough and mucus (sputum) production at least three months a year for two consecutive years.
Other signs and symptoms of COPD may include:
• Shortness of breath, especially during physical activities
• Wheezing
• Chest tightness
• Having to clear your throat first thing in the morning, due to excess mucus in your lungs
• A chronic cough that may produce mucus (sputum) that may be clear, white, yellow, or greenish
• Blueness of the lips or fingernail beds (cyanosis)
• Frequent respiratory infections
• Lack of energy
• Unintended weight loss (in later stages)
• Swelling in ankles, feet, or legs
People with COPD are also likely to experience episodes called exacerbations, during which their symptoms become worse than usual day-to-day variation and persist for at least several days.
Treatment
Treatment of COPD requires a careful and thorough evaluation by a physician. COPD treatment can alleviate symptoms, decrease the frequency and severity of exacerbations, and increase exercise tolerance. For those who smoke, the most important aspect of treatment is smoking cessation. Avoiding tobacco smoke and removing other air pollutants from the patient's home or workplace are also important. Symptoms such as coughing, or wheezing can be treated with medication. Pulmonary rehabilitation is an individualized treatment program that teaches COPD management strategies to increase quality of life. Plans may include breathing strategies, energy-conserving techniques, exercise training, and nutritional counseling. The flu can cause serious problems in people with COPD. Vaccination during flu season is recommended and respiratory infections should be treated with antibiotics, if appropriate. Patients who have low blood oxygen levels are often given supplemental oxygen.
Strengthening the “HOOD” RECLAMATION
Greetings, Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Washington D.C., key#111, and the 11th Alumni Chapter of our beloved fraternity. It’s my honor and privilege to serve as the Chapter Chair of Membership and Reclamation. As we move onward and upward towards the light of our Chapter 100th Centennial, it’s apparent that we as a brotherhood seek to build and stimulate the ambitions of the Brotherhood at all levels of the fraternity to include college brothers and alumni brothers collaborating towards making more cohesive efforts to maintain the “House of Goodwill and Fellowship,” This means that we must embrace one another through both good times and bad times, because “He’s Not Heavy, He’s my Brother.”
Many brothers today seek a brother to reach out to them, and that initiation begins with us becoming “brothers of action.” A brother of action is a brother that reaches out to another brother to check in or to collaborate on the love of Brotherhood. Our seven Jewels believed that “brotherhood” is the foundational pillar of organizational effectiveness. Organizational effectiveness starts with leadership throughout the Chapter leading by example in communicating organizational goals and objectives; it involves every financial brother reviewing the Chapter Organizational Roster to ensure that the brothers meet the Chapter membership requirements.
We are our “Brother Keepers”; strengthening our Brotherhood remains one of the critical aspects of our 36th General President, Brother Dr. Willis L. Lonzer III, and
our Chapter President Brother. Tony Wilson.
The Membership and Reclamation Committee’s goals and objectives are aligned with the Fraternity Motto “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.” First of All, everybody must be accountable for replenishing the ranks of “The Brotherhood,” reaching out to every brother, financial or nonfinancial, to let them know that we care for them, Servants of All is where we serve innovative ideas through strategic planning to help brothers through their personal issues through grace and mercy sponsorship initiatives, We Shall Transcend All once brothers start to see that we as “ collective brotherhood” care about their mental or social aspects it will begin to rejuvenate their “Spirit of Alpha” to seek to maintain their membership. As the National Headquarters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated starts its push on the new initiative “No Brother Left Behind Initiative,” let us as “Brotherhood” join in reclaiming as many brothers as possible because there’s no “Brotherhood without Putting Brotherhood First.” As we approach our 100th Centennial, the chapter’s goal is to add 50 reclaimed brothers back onto the Chapter Financial Membership roster for the fiscal years 2023 and 2024. That sounds like a great task, but we as a “Brotherhood” can do all things!

Greeting Brothers,
The 2019-2022 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.
Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.
We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.
It was totally voluntary. You were not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. Harris, Jr. our National Historian and author of Volume II has participated in the sessions, and all sessions are chaired by our own Bro. Ryle Bell.

Alpha is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
