EXECUTIVE MESSAGE (from Page 1)
impairments and one-third of those rely on family and friends to meet their transportation needs. For many seniors, maintaining their homes and adapting them to their changing needs is a challenge – both physically and financially.
The limitations caused by advanced age places demands on family members, caregivers, and the larger community to ensure the elderly remain independently functional; this larger community includes Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Brother’s Keeper is a program that ensures Alpha men are looking after their brothers, spouse, and widows. This program has seven areas of emphasis:
o Assisting in maintaining living environments
o Assisting in maintaining the upkeep of properties
o Assisting with health care decision making
o Providing companionship
o Providing legal services
o Providing transportation
o Ensuring brothers and widows have adequate supplies of food, water, shelter, and clothing
This is the type of program that should have been in place much earlier than now. As Mu Lambda chapter works to implement this special program, we should implement it in phases to ensure its success. It is very important that we do not take any backwards steps as we implement a program that will greatly aid our brothers. I am currently looking for a brother to lead this effort. During the April chapter meeting, it will be discussed in more detail.
AS A REMINDER, THE APRIL CHAPTER MEETING WILL BE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 15TH IN THE AFTERNOON THERE WILL NOT BE A CHAPTER MEETING ON APRIL 6TH More information about the April 15th chapter meeting will be discussed during the March chapter meeting.
See you at the next chapter meeting on March 2nd.
Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.” Brother Martin Luther King Jr.

If one were to attend a meeting at Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. you would see a great quantity of successful positive role models. You would probably meet sons, husbands, fathers, and even grandfathers who serve their communities, churches, and fraternity. Washington DC’s Mu Lambda Chapter encompasses men who have many years of service with Alpha, some for as many as 75 years and some as few as 11 months. This month, two Alpha men in particular are being highlighted to celebrate their fifty plus years of commitment to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. These two Brothers are none other than Brother Douglas Sands and Brother Lawrence Montgomery. Between the two Alpha Brothers they have over 104 years of Alpha experience and leadership to share. When chronicling their passage through Alpha the journey begins back on December 13, 1953, to a small predominately black college in a residential section of Baltimore, Maryland known today as Morgan State University, Beta Alpha Chapter. Morgan State is where Alpha began for these two line brothers and life long friends. When asked a series of questions regarding Alpha life, their answers were somewhat similar as would be expected by two line brothers

Q: Who or what influenced your decision to pledge Alpha?
A: Brother Douglas Sands – My high school principal Mr. Craft along with my older brother who also happened to be an Alpha man influenced me greatly to join Alpha. The other very important reason was a man by the name of Belford V. Lawson the 16th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He spoke at Morgan State College once and afterwards I said I want to be just like him.
A: Brother Lawrence Montgomery – For me it was the atmosphere at Morgan. I was approached by all of the fraternities but Alpha had all the leadership positions. The professors were Alphas and as a whole the Alpha men on campus were sophisticated gentlemen who had fun but were no nonsense.
Q: How was Alpha revered on campus by other Greek organizations?
A: Brother Douglas Sands – The student leadership was Alpha Phi Alpha. The major athletes were Alphas and all the scholars were Alphas. Alphas were your best friends on campus.
A: Brother Lawrence Montgomery - Alpha was held in the highest esteem. Many Alphas held leadership positions, there were even Alpha professors on campus.
Q: What differences do you see in Alpha Phi Alpha today as opposed to fifty years ago?
A: Brother Douglas Sands – Access to Alpha is more convenient today. We used to get a tap on the shoulder and go through an intense interview process and then endure two semesters of pledging and keep your grades at a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Today in Mu Lambda, I am in this for the struggle and success of Black men in Alpha Phi Alpha nities.
A: Brother Lawrence Montgomery – The level of brotherhood has diminished. In some ways the level of consideration for a brother has dropped. Back then “if you were an Alpha, you were alright”. Back then you had Esprit de Corps. There was pride and friendship amongst the Brothers. Today in Mu Lambada, I see a great deal of enthusiasm in our younger Brothers to carry out the mandates of our National Organization and in our commu
