The President’s Message

MAY 2025 MESSAGE

Brothers of Mu Lambda,

As we step into the month of May, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for your unwavering commitment to our chapter and to the greater mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Your relentless support and brotherhood continue to set Mu Lambda apart. From our record-setting presence at the Eastern Regional Conference to surpassing $10,000 raised for March of Dimes, your efforts have been nothing short of inspiring. Our recent community block cleanup and countless other acts of service serve as a powerful reminder of the value and impact of Mu Lambda here in Washington, D.C. We are not only representing our chapter — we are living in our legacy.

Personally, this April marked a significant milestone for me as I completed my first year in the Executive M.B.A. program at Howard University. It has been a humbling experience, and one that further strengthens my belief in the transformative power of brotherhood, education, and service. The joy and promise this past month brought reaffirm my hope for the continued excellence of Mu Lambda.

Brothers, as we look ahead to May — and especially to our March for Babies walk at Nationals Park — I remain excited for what we will accomplish together. Let us continue to lead with love, purpose, and excellence.

With heartfelt thanks and Alpha pride,

Fraternally,

Brother Mikael E. LaRoche,

MAY 2025 MESSAGE

Greetings Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Mu Lambda Chapter!

I hope this message finds you in great health and high spirits.

I’m feeling energized as we return from the 93rd Eastern Regional Convention! A heartfelt thank you to the more than 40 brothers who registered and attended—you helped make Mu Lambda’s presence truly felt. A special shoutout as well to everyone who contributed to making our first hospitality suite a success. I think we can all agree that Friday night was a memorable evening, filled with fellowship and good energy that our visiting brothers thoroughly enjoyed.

But the work doesn’t stop! This weekend, we lace up for March for Babies as part of Project Alpha, and in just two weeks, we’ll come together again for our Alpha Move event—which is shaping up to be a major success (catch what I did there..LOL)

As we approach the end of the fraternal year, let’s stay focused and build on the strong foundation we’ve laid for the year ahead.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support. Together, we’ll keep moving onward and upward.

Fraternally,

Onward and Upward,

Brother Joseph Gibbs

SHINING AT ERC93

Mu Lambda Shines at the 93rd Eastern Regional Convention

Mu Lambda Shines at the 93rd Eastern Regional

The Mu Lambda Chapter proudly stood tall and represented with strength and purpose at the 93rd Eastern Regional Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., held this year in Bethesda, Maryland, during the 2025 “EASTer Weekend.” Hosted by the Mighty Mid-Atlantic Association of Chapters (M.A.A.C.), alongside the Iota Upsilon Lambda and Iota Zeta chapters, the regional convening brought together Brothers from across the region for a weekend of fellowship, business, and brotherhood.

With over 43 Mu Lambda Brothers registered and in attendance, our presence was not just noticed—it was felt. From Thursday through

Saturday, Brothers filled the business sessions, workshops, and social events held in the halls of the Marriott Conference Center. Mu Lambda remained deeply engaged in the governance and forward progress of our dear Fraternity.

A special highlight of the weekend included Brother G.D. McNeal, who played a pivotal role by facilitating constitutional business sessions— continuing a legacy of thoughtful leadership and administrative excellence.

Another proud moment came during the Spring 2025 Neophyte Pinning Ceremony, which was not only well-attended but also featured remarks from none other than Brother Roland Martin, who offered inspirational words on legacy and accountability. To see all of our newest brothers from Spring 2025 present, beaming with pride and commitment, was a moment of triumph for the Chapter.

On Friday evening, Mu Lambda hosted an executive suite reception, providing a welcoming and celebratory space for Brothers visiting from near and far. The event served as a reminder of Mu Lambda’s signature hospitality, class, and dedication to uplifting the fraternal bond.

Special Honors and Recognitions

We extend heartfelt congratulations to the Brothers and chapters recognized during the convention. Notably:

Brother Rasheen E. Smith was duly elected as the new Eastern Region Vice President, running unopposed and receiving full support from the Brotherhood.

WHY WE DREAM

Mu Lambda Brother Arlester Brown, Honored at the French Embassy with Documentary covering his WWII service in Normandy France!

On the evening of Tuesday, April 22, 2025, history and honor converged at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., as Brother Arlester Brown, a proud member of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was celebrated for his extraordinary life and legacy. At 101 years old, Brother Brown stood tall among heroes as one of only **five living U.S. veterans featured in Delta Airlines’ new documentary, “Why We Dream”—**a powerful tribute to the bravery of World War II veterans, with a special focus on their service in Normandy, France.

The elegant evening featured a private screening of the documentary, which chronicles the personal stories and historical impact of the five veterans, including Brother Brown, whose

life and military service continue to inspire generations. His service in Normandy during WWII, a pivotal moment in world history, is spotlighted in the film as a testament to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of African American soldiers who fought for freedoms abroad that were still denied at home.

The film, produced and sponsored by Delta Airlines, will soon be available on all Delta flights and is set to premiere at an upcoming film festival in New York, further amplifying the voices and stories of these living legends to audiences worldwide.

A Night of Brotherhood and Tribute

The Mu Lambda Chapter was well-represented at this historic event, with several Brothers in attendance to honor and support Brother Brown. Among those present were: Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, Chapter President, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, Immediate Past Chapter President, Brother Samuel Armstrong, Area Director, Brother Al Williams. Brother Karl Bruce, Brother Swain Riley, Brother Andre Lucas

Their presence served not only as a show of support for Brother Brown but also as a reminder of the deep ties Mu Lambda shares with service, legacy, and the unwavering commitment to uplifting our elders and preserving our stories.

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

COLLABORATED WITH OLA AND IUL TO BRING THE GOLD STANDARD TO THE EASTERN REGIONAL CONVENTION

Brothers from the deep south in Viginia to the tops of Maine, flocked to the Eastern Regional Convention in Bethesda this April, to be welcomed by the MAAC. We had the distinct priviledge of hosting a joint social with the host chapter Iota Upsilon Lambda, in Silver Spring, along with our neighbors, Omicron Lambda Alpha - Washington DC.

The music was in the air, food and drinks were being served by the establishment. Everyone present had a smile on their face as we continued our warm welcome of the 93rd

Regional Conference.

With walls packed and Djs keeping the floors busy, we extend gratitude to all the patrons who made this event possible. As we continue to grow our networks and presence, it is important to let our hair down and create the GOLD STANDARD for events, service, and advocacy.

The work continues.

MU LAMBDA TO THE YOUTH

MU LAMBDA BROTHERS UPLIFT YOUNG SCHOLARS AT CAPITOL HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY

When last-minute cancellations threatened to derail Career Day at Capitol Heights Elementary School in Prince George’s County, the strength of brotherhood and commitment to community quickly stepped in. The night before the event, the school counselor informed me that several scheduled presenters could no longer attend. In true Alpha fashion, I reached out to Brother Karl Bruce of the Mu Lambda Chapter. Though he couldn’t attend in person, he didn’t hesitate to help—immediately connecting me with Brothers David Edgerton III and Randall Clarke, who answered the call without hesitation.

Brother Edgerton inspired a third-grade class with a dynamic session on the legal profession, highlighting the different pathways to law school and how students’ current studies lay the foundation for future success. “Every single person in this room can be an attorney, and everyone in this room can change the world and

make an impact,” he told the students—words that landed with power and purpose. Brother Clarke brought his expertise in real estate development and shared insights from his work with the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. He emphasized how school skills translate into real-world careers. “Glad to participate. The kids were inspiring,” he reflected after the event. Also presenting was Brother Geniro Dingle, who introduced students to his nonprofit, Green Peace, and the fight for climate justice. He broke down how environmental advocacy intersects with health, education, and equity, making a complex topic accessible and relevant to young minds. “It was a good experience to be back in the classroom talking with kids. Thanks for the invitation!” he shared with enthusiasm.

The day concluded with a well-earned pizza celebration for the school’s chorus, generously donated by Brother Malcolm Carter. The choir had recently received an overall “Superior” rating in the county-wide choral assessment and was one of only four elementary schools in Prince George’s County to participate—an exceptional achievement. I was joined by two fourth-grade students to help carry in the food. As soon as they saw Brother Carter, their eyes lit up—they had met him before and proudly said, “We know he’s your fraternity brother!” Brother Carter greeted them warmly, engaging them in a thoughtful conversation about leadership, goals, and how they could be examples for their peers. What began as a pizza delivery became a moment of mentorship. When the boys said, “We want to be Alphas one day,” Brother Carter smiled with pride, knowing the seeds of service,

scholarship, and brotherhood had already been planted.

My chapter, Mu Lambda, continues to fuel my passion for Alpha Phi Alpha because it consistently demonstrates what service in action looks like. Whether it’s answering a late-night call, sharing knowledge with young students, or uplifting a school community through meaningful gestures, the brothers of Mu Lambda show up—with intention, heart, and a deep commitment to our mission. Together, we don’t just wear the letters—we embody them.

Bro. Thomas Pierre Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter

ML SPRING 2025

THE DESCENDANTS CORNER

Over a month into their journey as Alpha men, the 13 Descendents of Akhenaten are off to a solid start! Applying their time, talent, and treasure toward the support of their fellow brothers and our longstanding community initiatives, they are already working industriously to serve our chapter well.

From representing Spring 2025 at the Anacostia Clean Up – their first service event as brothers –to laying the groundwork for their plans to feed the women of The House of Ruth, our neophytes are already exhibiting their commitment to the Greater Washington, D.C. community. Impressively, in just one month, the 13 men have surpassed their goal of $1,300 raised in support of March for Babies – a charitable walking event sponsored by March of Dimes, whose proceeds help fund research to prevent premature births, birth defects, and infant mortality.

Yet, the engagement of our new brothers hasn’t only been public-facing. Since crossing the burning sands back in March, they have been actively engaged in several chapter committees including Archival/History, Nominations, Health and Wellness, Brother’s Keeper, Public Policy, Community Service, and Leadership Development Institute. Using their personal and professional expertise to help propel the chapter forward, their ideas and ambitions are limitless.

Another highlight for the line was seeing the fraternity through a regional lens firsthand, attending the 93rd annual Eastern Region Convention in Bethesda, Maryland. Beyond the insightful business sessions, the celebratory luncheons, and the tantalizing vendors, what made the convening especially meaningful was fellowshipping with the brotherhood. Whether it was dancing the night away at The Gold Standard party or inviting other chapters to enjoy the splendor of Mu Lambda hospitality, these are some of their earliest memories as Alphas, times they’ll cherish and look back on fondly.

Most importantly, our neophytes have kicked off their membership by displaying a critical cornerstone of brotherhood: showing up. They

cornerstone of brotherhood: showing up. They showed up when they worshipped at Fort Washington Christian Church, where Bro. Joseph Clark ministers, and again when they broke bread with his family after he received the 2025 Robert H. Brisbane Law & Public Service Award from Morehouse College. They showed up for Bro. Jonathan Brown in support of his wife, who was recently initiated into the Beta Zeta alumni chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. And they showed up in full force to watch their Beta chapter cluster brothers probate on the yard of Howard University.

Celebrating the achievements of their line brothers, strengthening bonds with their prophytes, and meeting Mu Lambda’s standard

of excellence will be this line’s North Star. And while their road to Alpha was long, we know their journey in it is just beginning. We look forward to seeing the efforts of the 13 Descendents of Akhenaten sustained – for the future of Mu Lambda is bright and our 101-year legacy will continue to shine through them. bringing this vision to life. The legacy of Mu Lambda continues to grow, and this is just the beginning of the impact our new initiates will make. Welcome to the House of Alpha!

MU LAMBDA IS SERVICE

SOUTH EAST STREET CLEAN UP

On a cold yet powerful day in Southeast Washington, D.C., the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. once again demonstrated what it means to be servants of all by showing up in force for a community beautification project in Anacostia, staying true to our chapter’s commitment to serve all 8 Wards of the District—no matter the weather.

Despite the slight drizzle, over 20 Brothers of Mu Lambda answered the call to service, participating in a street sign change and neighborhood beautification effort in partnership with @CleanCityDC, the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City. This initiative focused on revitalizing public spaces, uplifting the neighborhood’s appearance, and reinforcing civic pride in one of D.C.’s most historic and culturally rich communities.

Brothers rolled up their sleeves to install new signage and clear trash and debris from sidewalks and green spaces— contributing to the intentional beautification of Southeast D.C. This initiative is part of the chapter’s broader, ongoing mission to create tangible, positive impact in every ward of the city, especially in areas too often overlooked.

This project is one of many service touchpoints for the chapter this year, further solidifying Mu Lambda’s role as a pillar of leadership and action in the nation’s capital.

A RECAP

(AI): LEVEL UP YOUR LINKEDIN PRESENCE

BRO. DAVID EDGERTON II

We all know that how you show up matters. Whether you’re networking, applying for new roles, building a business, or just connecting professionally, your personal brand is working for you — or against you — every single day.

One of the easiest ways to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward? Take a closer look at your LinkedIn profile.

Today, I’m sharing a simple exercise that any Brother can do this weekend to evaluate — and immediately improve — how you’re being perceived online.

Step 1:

Open Your Browser and Use ChatGPT First, open your browser and head to ChatGPT.

Then type in this prompt:

“You are a social media expert. Please research all the LinkedIn posts for the profile: [Insert Your LinkedIn Profile URL].”

This first step helps ChatGPT “look” at the posts you’ve shared publicly and start identifying patterns in your personal brand.

Step 2:

Ask ChatGPT to Identify Your Brand Themes Once you’ve given the first prompt, follow up with:

“The posts are publicly visible. I’m looking for themes that describe the topics this personal brand is promoting.”

This second prompt digs deeper. It helps you see your LinkedIn presence the way others — including employers, clients, and collaborators — see it. Are you coming across as a thought leader? A rising star? A committed community servant? A technical expert?

Or — and this happens more often than you think — is your brand confusing, inconsistent, or invisible?

Why This Matters: Brothers, Your LinkedIn Is Your Digital Handshake When someone Googles your name, guess what usually comes up first?

Your LinkedIn profile.

That’s your first impression — your digital

handshake — and it matters just as much as a firm grip and confident eye contact.

As Brothers, we hold ourselves to a higher standard in every arena — professional, personal, and communal. Sharpening your LinkedIn profile isn’t about vanity - it’s about making sure your digital presence reflects the excellence, leadership, and purpose you live by every day.

What You Might Find (And What to Do About It)

After ChatGPT provides your branding themes, you’ll likely fall into one of these categories:

On Point:

Your posts consistently align with leadership, professionalism, and the industries you care about. (Keep doing what you’re doing — maybe even turn it up a notch.)

Mixed Signals:

Your content is scattered or inconsistent. (No shame — now’s the time to refocus and align your posts with the brand you want to be known for.)

Silent Operator:

You rarely post, comment, or engage, which means you’re invisible to opportunities. (Good news: a little consistent effort can build a strong presence fast.)

How to Put This Knowledge to Work

Once you know your current brand themes, use this knowledge to:

Focus: Post more about the industries, causes, and leadership areas you want to be associated with.

Elevate: Share articles, thoughts, and commentary that reflect your goals — whether that’s community impact, entrepreneurship, innovation, or leadership.

Strategize: If you want to move into a new field or role, start posting and commenting in those spaces.

Engage: Don’t just post and disappear. Comment thoughtfully on Brothers’ posts, on industry leaders’ posts, and in conversations you care about.

Quick Tips to Strengthen Your LinkedIn Game

Here are some extra moves you can make right now:

Refresh Your Headline:

Say more than just your job title. Share the impact you create.

Example: Helping communities grow through nonprofit leadership | Advocate for education and equity

Upgrade Your About Section:

Tell your story. Why do you do what you do? What drives you?

Focus on the impact you’re making or striving toward.

Use Professional Photos:

First impressions matter. A clean, professional photo (preferably smiling) makes a huge difference.

Consistency Wins:

You don’t need to post every day. Once or twice a week, consistently, can move the needle.

Connect Intentionally:

Send personalized connection requests — especially to Brothers you meet at events, conferences, or through mutual contacts.

Remember: Your LinkedIn Is a Reflection of You — and of Us

As brothers, we are all representatives of something greater than ourselves. Every accomplishment, every leadership role, every act of service — it all builds our collective legacy.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.

The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.

The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?

As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.

Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

Message from the Editor

BRO. DANIEL MUSHALA EDITOR OF THE TORCH TORCH@MULAMBDA.ORG

ALPHA QUOTE TO SERVE BY...

“THINK Alpha Phi Alpha, TALK Alpha Phi Alpha, PROMOTE Alpha Phi Alpha, and LABOR for the broad principles of idealism for which Alpha Phi Alpha was created, so that humanity shall look on us as a body worthwhile.”

Brother Henry L. Dickason, 5th General President

April showers have passed, and now we welcome the beauty of May flowers—and with them, one of the most heartfelt celebrations of the year: Mother’s Day.

This month is a reminder of how truly special it is to have a mother’s love—unconditional, selfless, and unwavering. It’s easy to take that kind of love for granted, but let’s pause to appreciate the countless sacrifices and the deep care that helped shape who we are today.

So, let’s raise a glass in honor of all the amazing women who embody the spirit of motherhood—our Mothers, Wives, Daughters, Sisters, and Aunts. Whether by birth, by choice, or by heart, they deserve to be celebrated for the love they give so freely.

Here’s to the women who nurture, guide, and inspire us every single day.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
