8 EMERGING WRITERS TO WATCH OUT FOR Get to know eight twenty-something writers who will capture our literary hearts by Alicia Berkeley

20-year-old Marianne Teigen recently published her first young adult novel, and in only a month, it has reached the New York Times Bestsellers list.

M

agazines, according to Wikipedia, are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or published electronically. The online versions are called online magazines. They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. Magazines are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three. The earliest example of magazines was Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen launched in 1663 in Germany.

The oldest consumer magazine still in print is The Scots Magazine, which was first published in 1739, though multiple changes in ownership and gaps in publication totaling over 90 years weaken that claim. Magazine Distribution Magazines can be distributed through the mail, through sales by newsstands, bookstores, or other vendors, or through free distribution at selected pick-up locations. The subscription business models for distribution fall into three main categories.

In the case of written publication, it is a collection of written articles. This explains why magazine publications share the word root with gunpowder magazines, artillery magazines, firearms magazines, and, in various languages although not English, retail stores such as department stores.

A literary magazine is a periodical devoted to literature in a broad sense. Literary magazines usually publish short stories, poetry and essays along with literary criticism, book reviews, biographical profiles of authors, interviews and letters. Little magazines or "small magazines", are literary magazines that publish experimental writings of relatively unknown writers. They are usually noncommercial in their outlook and are often very irregular in their publication.

In publishing, to perform or display a work publicly means to perform or display it at a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered. It also means to communicate a performance or display of the work to a place or to the public, by means of any device or process, whether the members of the public capable of receiving the performance or display receive it in the same place.

“

In the United States, publication is defined as the distribution of copies or phonorecords of a work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending. The offering to distribute copies or phonorecords to a group of persons for purposes of further distribution, public performance, or public display, constitutes publication. A performance in public or display of a work does not of itself constitute publication.

STELLA YOUNG: LIFE OF A PAINTER by Samantha McArthur Photos by John Adams

Painting, according to Wikipedia, is the practice of applying paint, pigment, or other medium to a surface. The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. Painting describes both the act and the result of the action. Paintings may have for their support surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay, leaf, copper or concrete, and may incorporate

other materials including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf as well as objects. Painting is a mode of creative expression, and the forms are numerous. Drawing, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction, among other aesthetic modes, may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational, photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolistic , emotive, or be political in nature.

While a good conclusion is an important ingredient for newspaper articles, the immediacy of a deadline environment means that copy editing often takes the form of deleting everything past an arbitrary point in the story corresponding to the dictates of available space on a page. ON TAKING RISKS Therefore, newspaper reporters are trained to write in inverted pyramid style, with all the most important information in the first paragraph or two. If the less vital details are pushed towards the end of the story, then the potentially destructive impact of draconian copy editing will be minimized.

Magazines are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or published electronically. (The online versions are called online magazines.) They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three. At its root, the word "magazine" refers to a collection or storage location. The emergence of the new media branch has to be seen in close connection with the simultaneous spread of the printing press from which the publishing press derives its name.

STELLA'S TOP TIPS

FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS Stella shares words of wisdom from her years of experience as a young painter.

EXPERIMENT If you're undecided on which path to take, try several paths and then decide which one is the best fit. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT YOU WANT.

“It's not hard to decide what you want your life to be about. What's hard, she said, is figuring out what you're willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about.”

WORK ON PERSONAL PROJECTS. Simeon Kondev once said, “I feel like every project I work on is a dream project, so long as I am learning.”
