At long last it looks as if we are going to be back to some sort of normality by the summer which will be a relief to everyone as this pandemic has been a nightmare for all concerned. However, I wouldn’t put money on it as the past year has shown us that just when things seem to be getting better there is another sting in the tail. At least the children are back at school which is good both for their learning, and from a mental health perspective. The Community Council has continued to hold monthly virtual meetings, and the public are welcome to attend. There is a link for the meeting posted on our Facebook page. The meetings are held on the first Monday of the month except where it falls on a bank holiday whereby we have them on a Tuesday. There are no Community Council meetings in July and January. The attraction of the Muirkirk’s hills has brought many visitors to the area who have enjoyed being in the great outdoors. It is good to see people coming here, but a downside is the amount of litter that is being dropped and left behind. This is very disappointing as it spoils the countryside, and is left to others to pick it up. It is good manners to show respect for the environment to take their rubbish home or deposit in the bins provided for this purpose. With the lockdown easing people may be starting to think about booking a holiday although it is not yet clear if we will be able to go abroad for some guaranteed sunshine as the pandemic is now in a third wave so there may be very little scope for foreign travel. So it looks like staycations will be the most popular option. You will see in the Newsletter that there is a proposal by local artist John Andrew to paint a mural on the gable of the Empire Bar. The mural is looking to depict the industrial history of Muirkirk so it would be good to get some feedback from you with regards to merits or demerits of the Project.
