NEWS IN BRIEF H i s t o r i c meeting in A f r i c a IN ETHIOPIA, where the United Nations Security Council is debating the Rhodesian - British accords, almost the entire world joined in isolating the U.S., Britain, Portugal and other racist - imperialist states, as the prime threats to African liberation, progress and security. The Soviet Union and China cooled down their quarrel long enough to unite in urging the U.N. to reject Britain's effort to bolster white rule in Rhodesia. Also, leaders of the major African liberation groups praised socialist bloc countries for giving the freedom fighters vital aid in their fight against U.S. and Western Europe - led imperialism. The Africans also criticized those Blacks who, under the guise of Pan - Africanism, "pretend there is no difference in social systems." U.S. Ambassador George Bush denied that the U.S. supports racism, and drew contempt from the world's representatives for the bald lie. Observers feel Black Congressman Charles Diggs withdrew from the U.S. delegation so that he would not be forced to reveal his support of U.S. military penetration of the African region. Diggs, who is expected to play a leading role in the forthcoming "Blaqk political convention" in Gary, Ind., recently supported the U.&. agreement with the Portuguese dictatorship concerning the Azores Island. Diggs could not afford to be confronted with this fact at a Security Council meeting in Africa.

Mountains and mole hills BLACK STUDENTS from the University of Minnesota's Afro American Action Council denounced the Big Ten athletic association's hysterical reaction to a brawl between Minnesota and Ohio State basketball teams. In the brawl two Black Minnesota players succumbed to the athletic hysteria bred in most large U.S. schools, lost their heads and brutally attacked an opposing player. Black students, including the two players, Corky Taylor and Ron Behagen, regretted the incident. But Francisco Lloyd, head of the Council, said Black students oppose the attempts of whites to make "political hay" of the incident. "Here is the governor of Ohio (John Gilligan) saying he has never seen anything so vicious. And he doesn't mention Kent State where white national guardsmen fatally shot four unarmed white students," Lloyd said. This white racist's moral short - sightedness was also displayed by those who criticized the young woman, singer Carole Feraci, who urged President Nixon to stop killing, burning and poisoning people and vegetation in southeast Asia. What disturbed Miss Feraci's critics was that she had "insulted" the president and interrupted the entertainment. The mass murders did not bother them.

B l a c k s j o i n U.S. p i r a c y THE ECONOMIC PIRACY of Africa and its peoples by the United States is being aided and abetted by Blacks willing to profit from their fellow Blacks misery. To succeed, of course, requires the support of sections of the African countries which permit this new masking of exploitation. Recently the city of Chicago and governor of Illinois backed a Black delegation of businessmen who visited several African countries. Now, several months later, Walter Sanderson, a Black man who heads a small manufacturing firm, is opening up a plant in Ghana "in cooperation with Inland Steel." Inland Steel, like many other industrial corporations, is closing down some operations in the U.S., at a cost of many Black's jobs. A few Blacks, however, are willing to serve the role in Africa that European Jews served in penetrating Israel. This sort will be taken along to Africa as part of the Inland Steel operation. This Black "Zionism," like that of Israel's is supported by U.S. monopolies and the military. And it is designed "to block true independence and the development of an anti - imperialist, anti capitalist social system in African countries," according to several progressive African diplomats M.S. contacted in Washington.

Middle E a s t Report By Ali Baghdadi The fact that calm has prevailed after one week of student demonstration in Cairo, does not indicate that the domestic crisis facing President Anwar E s -Sadat have come to an end. The people in Egypt, as well as all over the Muslim world, are busy celebrating Eid Al-Adha, the Sacrifice Feast, in memory of the Prophet Abraham, who attempted to sacrifice his son THIS TEMPORARY CALM was also called by President Sadat's acceptance of the invitation extended by the Egyptian students to meet with them at Gamal Abdul Nasser Hall $ T Cairo University. Thtf date of the meeting has m i yet been announced, but the Egyptian leader said that it will be soon after the holiday. Mr. Sadat accepted a similar invitation to meet with the students at Alexandria University. In a cable sent to the president, the students assured Mr. Sadat of their "confidence in his leadership and their loyalty to the soil of Egypt." However, the purpose of the meeting, as explained by the students, is to initiate debate and discussion which could strengthen the home front in preparation for the battle of destiny against Israel and the imperialist forces which stand behind her. So-called reliable sources coming from Cairo reported that Dr. Azeez Sidqui, the new

Egyptian Prime Minister, threatened to resign for his disagreement over Mr. Sadat's charge that the demonstration had been instigated by "outside elements" to split the country's home front. Dr. Sidqui seemed to oppose the jailing of thirty students who will be tried by a security court. Surprisingly, Mr. Hasaneen Haikal. editor of the influential Al-ahram (the pyramids) daily paper, and a close advisor of Mr. Sadat, came also in support of the students' demands and supported their rights to dissent. More and more backing of the students was voiced by almost every section of the Egyptian population. Demands for the immediate release of all students who led the recent demonstrations were expressed by labor and professional unions, business and various organizations. PRESIDENT SADAT is becoming more and more isolated, not only in Egypt but all over the Arab world. Algeria, Iraq, Syria. South Yeman, as well as the Palestinian Resistance, are opposed to any concession given to racist Israel. Even President Muammar Al Quddafi -of Libya, whose country is a member in the Federation of Arab Republics (Libya, Egypt and Syria), has been quite open in his criticism of Sadat's foreign policy. QUDDAFI'S VIEWS seem to

be compatible to the views expressed by the Egyptian students. They feel that armed struggle alone is the only way to liberate occupied Arab land and guarantee justice for the Palestinians. He himself sees no possibility for co-existence with the Zionist settler state and has disapproved of Sadat's attempt to find a compromise solution. Mr. Sadat stresses that his vow to fight to free occupied Arab land "was not mere talk but a reality." The Arabs are faced by both the US and Israel. Liberation of Arab land is not an easy task however, transforming the Arab masses into a revolutionary reservoir armed with political awareness can defeat the imperialist technological superiority. In addition to the regular armed forces, which show great sympathy with the students' demands, the involvement of the masses in the struggle is a prerequisite for eventual victory. Viet Nam serves as the best example.

M u h a m m a d meets C H I C A G O — This is the conclusion of M.S.'s exclusive three -part series on Messenger Mohammad's historic press conference with 16 journalists and p h o t o g r a p h e r s last month. Quest: Do you feel that it is incorrect to use the term •power struggle" (in reference to recent events) ? Muhammad: As I said here some time ago, this thing has been happening for forty years; but I never pay it any attention. It doesn't annoy me, because I know a person of that sort has as yet to learn what really Islam is, here in America. Islam in America is to reclaim our people and put them in their own. This is the Resurrection of our people in America. Quest:Is that struggle more intense now than it was in the past? You say it has been going on for forty years. : Well, I do not meet any different with what I met thirty-five or forty years ago. They always will be striving to be something of their own but I do not pay them any attention because I know they will never be successful. Quest: Your son-in-law, Raymond Sharrieff, is second in command? Muhammad: I would say this: since I am not going to come back and look over the staff and see who is on it, let us just forget about asking such questions. Quest: Has somebody been caught trying to get their hands in the cookie jar? Muhammad: I do not know of anything like that, because I do not pay any attention to this annoying talk about someone

M.S.

taking over. I Am Assured by God, Himself, and by the Prophets. I am not particular about others who talk just to hear themselves talk. I would say they are just wasting time. In the Last Days (if you will allow me to say this,) in the Last Days, it is plainly written that you will have Elijah to pat yon on the right way and this man starts way back here, almost in the beginning. He "travels" with yon, throughout your Bible. This man will , fulfill that which is written of him. This is the Resurrection I refer to of our Black people in America. And this is the place that they must come up first. They are in the "crossroads" here and they have to be pointed out the right way to go out. I do not mean to say they go out of America, but out of the evils of America. They were made unrighteous by the slavemasters. They are not even charged with it. You are forgiven everything of evil, on your accepting Islam — your Own. That is all God Asks you to do today, go back to your Own. You are forgiven for everything, because all the evil you did in the past, it was not you, it was the slavemaster who made you do evil. Quest: One question, how old are you now? Muhammad: I am threescore, ten, and three; I am 73 years old. Quest: How is you health? Muhammadi Well, as I just said a while ago all the afflictions of the other fellows (Prophets) I have to go through. Quest: When is your birthday? Muhammad: I do not know exactly my birthday. I just know the month it came in (October). So when October passes, I say I am so old and so old.

Quest: Mr. Muhammad, have you increased your security staff in recent months? Muhammad: No, I would never do that, only according to the people that come to us But, I always go with the hopes and with the knowledge that God Will Protect us, if my followers do as I tell them. I never depend on a group of security guards, only in the way of searching the people to see that the people don't enter the meeting with weapons and such things as whiskey on them, or playing cards or gambling material. Quest: Have you had many inquiries from the Muslims about Baton Rouge? Muhammad: No, I have not been confronted with a lot of people from across the country asking me questions about Baton Rouge, or what took place in Baton Rouge. No, they have brought me most of what I have heard was going on; not, say, questioning me. Quest: How many Mosques do you have throughout the country? Muhammad: There are a little better than 50 actually set up. There are so many little Mosques that come up overnight, I do not know the total, myself. Quest: Sources at the Temple denied that the ten Blacks were Muslims. Does each town have a registry of the people in that town? Muhammad: They would know more than I would know. Those are the people you should be questioning (the ones that are already there). The Muslims there in that Temple, they have very little knowledge of someone coming down there, starting trouble, until it actually broke out. Quest: What do you do for recreation? Do you play chess?

Muhammad: No, I do not play any games of chance. No, I do not ever have any time to do anything but teach and instruct Laborers how to go about their Labor. Quest: How long is your work day? Muhammad: We work seven days and we do not have a limit on how many hours we will work. Sometimes we work up until 11 or 12 O'clock at night. Our work has now become so enormous on us we hardly let go. When we go to sleep or to bed, we just have it to do. Quest: Will you spend your entire winter here? Muhammad: For the last few years I have been spending the whole winter and summer in Chicago. Quest: Have you been going to Phoenix in recent years? Muhammad: No, I have not

been to Phoenix in recent years. Quest: I would like to ask a religious question. Do you have visions? Muhammad: I do not say really have visions, but I do have voices, at times. Quest: Is that every day? Muhammad: No..No..No..not every day. Quest: Under what conditions does that occur, when you seek it to happen? Muhammad: That comes when I am not, say, really confining myself to expect something like that or seeking something like that. That just comes — just so. Quest'. Do you see this as the Voice of a Spiritual Teacher, or the Voice of God? (Continued on page 4)

By Leon Forrest CHICAGO - In the February issue of the prestigious woman's magazine Redbook, several members of an all Black panel hailed Muhammad Speaks as a leading news instrument, immutably designed to heighten and expand the conciousness of the Afro-American community. CLIMAXING HER extensively researched article concerning the myth and reality of television's propaganda campaign that true Black images are now being presented by television, Miss Jean Carey Bond, a noted free-lance writer and journalist, concluded that most Afro-Am erica n s are

thoroughly dissatisfied with images of themselves on television, radio, newspapers and magazines, and: "Muhammad Speaks, the nationally circulated newspaper of the Nation of Islam, was praised by several panelists as an invaluable source of Pan-African news and general news analysis—coverage that runs counter to the social and political orientation of the white press. "Said one mother: 'Muhammad Speaks tells it like it really is. And for the most part, the quality of the writing is first rate. The paper exposes facts that the white press suppresses and helps you to find out and understand what really is going on."

Redbook, via Miss Bond, invited 12 Black women to participate in a panel which took an across the board look at what kinds of images are being portrayed; the ladies found television to be the most infamous culprit, adding that behind the facade of improved opportunities exist "the gap between what is true about Blacks and what television" broadcasts about Blacks has not narrowed." Blacks on TV are pictured as hungry for conspicious consumption of the "good white life"; they are integrated into shows and advertisements on T.V. as pieces of the scenery, the panel indicated. Television's prime time programming makes every

attempt to avoid a social content, even when Blacks dominate the story line and the program, the panel said. One of the ladies breathed fire on the program Julia, calling it "the Metrecal Aunt Jemima — released from the pancake box and transferred to the video box, live and in color." But many of the complaints about lack of programming content and progressive viewpoint failed to assault the national issues of a have and have-not society. Geared to shoring up all vestiges of white paternalistic power elements Mission Impossible is much more of a devastating tribute to sinister CIA intrigues and a defense of the sick morality of the country than the simple,

one dimensional presence of Greg Morris, the "superefficient, CIA-type mission agent" implies. That is, Chappie James, general of the army, is not so much the issue in critizing the army, as the military presence in Viet Nam of the US and the other puppet forces trained by the CIA. Other panelists tended to embrace "super-pseudonationalists and Black "Pan Africanist" agent types and particularly their nondimensional cultural nationalism, which pretends to negate all instances of US acculturation while actually representing the Black equivalent of white America's arrogance and ignorance.

Messenger Muhammad: I know God. I was with Him about three years and about four or five months. I know His Voice. And when He Speaks, I know it. Quest: Not trying to be funny, have you received any of your spiritual feelings that perhaps something is amiss in the Nation of Islam; that perhaps some people are plotting to try to, say, destroy what you and* others have built? Muhammad: I do not have to guess on that ever. Since I have been Missioned by Allah, there has been someone around trying to get a chance to kill me. And I have met with some of them face to face. Quest: You do not plan a retirement, Mr. Muhammad? Muhammad: I cannot plan on that. How can I plan on a retirement? I cannot do that. Quest: I think you ha ye spoken about this in the past. Could you give us an assessment of the life of Malcolm? Muhammad.: No, I would not lose any time with a man that has been talked and talked about for years. If the people do not have a knowledge of him after these many years, I am not going to waste my time with going into Malcolm's history. Malcolm, I do not have any time to waste with him, as I think everyone knows Malcolm or did know Malcolm and they know Malcolm's death. He was teaching, according to what I heard, and the people that were there should give a better report than me.

Muhammad: I am talking about the Person that Is God, and I myself, was with Him for three years and four or five months...It began in 1931. I was able to recognize Him by His Help and by the help of Scripture. Quest: Are you talking about Mr. Fard? Muhammad: It was Him that I have learned all that I am now teaching. I do not know anything of myself. It is what He Has Given me. Quest:Is it His Voice that you hear in visions now? Muhammad: It is the Same Voice. In the past and at present, I have not had to go into such things as fasting and praying that I hear Him or see Him. Whenever I hear Him, it is just so. Just like something happens all of a sudden out of a blue sky, like thunder. Quest: How is it timed; every so often? Muhammad: No, it is not timed like that. It happens whenever He Gets Ready for that. Quest: Can you give me some idea? Muhammad: Whenever the time lis necessary that He Speak to me. How often that takes place? I do not keep a record of it. Quest: All these 40 years, this goes on periodically?

Muhammad: Yes, I have had Him Speaking to me in my ears now, in Person yes. There does not pass a year, that I do not Hear His Voice some time in that year. Quest : Would it be possible Quest: The Person you refer for you to tell us what He Has to as living with God for three Told you in the past year, or years and three or four this year? months...? Muhammad: No, I am not

here to tell you what He Said to me, yesterday, as much, unless it concerns you and the time. Quest: You mentioned that Black people were born, I believe you said pure? Muhammad: They were born righteous. Quest: And the slave owners made them unrighteous? Do you feel that slave owners were born unrighteous? Muhammad: Yes, they were, by nature, made unrighteous. Their nature was that. Quest: Does that include all white people now? Muhammad: That included all white people then and all white people now. They were made unrighteous. Quest: If you could pick one overriding issue by which you could be remembered by history, what would it be? What would you want to be remembered for, a centurey from now? Muhammad: I would only want to be remembered for the work that I do, in the Name of Allah. That is what I want to be remembered for. It has been very well lined up to us; we find here in Genesis the making of the man that started trouble. Even his sons started trouble. When they got old enough they started murdering each other and it has kept going ever since, because white people kill white people. They go to war with each other. They stay at war with each other. According to history, they had a thirty year war in England and a hundred year war in Europe and I see in the paper over here and on the radio, that they are fighting over there, one another, now.

What stumbling blocks still remain on the road to uhuru na ujamaa? At present we are not as economally independent as we would like to be. This is what really matters to us. Through socialism we are moving towards this goal. In concrete terms this means the people's control (through their government and institutions) of all major means of production and distribution of the economy, plus the establishment of ujamaa villages in the rural areas. The presence of enemies of socialism within and outside the nation is a stumbling block which should not be

They are not born . or created Muslims, but they have faith in what the Muslims are and trying to live. It is only through Islam that white people can be saved. What are the main differences and conflicts between the two groups? The word "conflict" is not proper here because there are no major conflicts between the two groups. It is true, however, that their immediate requirements differ. Who is it out there who feels so brave with a twister out there tearing up the houses on both sides? Quest: you do not feel that members of the Nation of Islam will have to take up guns? Muhammad: No, they would not have to do that, if they obey Allah, anymore than, I would say, Moses and Aaron had to take up arms against Pharoah. You have been fighting us with guns and what not ever since John Hawkins brought us here, over four hundred years ago. We have to find something more effective and the most effective are the forces of nature.

emphasized that Tanzanians can never attain genuine freedom until all African countries have defeated imperialism and neo colonialism. In what ways do you hope to see Africans strengthen their opposition to South Africa, Portugal, and their NATO allies? I want to see the strengthening of the Organization of African unity. African leaders must be really united whenever and wherever the peace and self determination of Africans are threatened. This is absolutely necessary even if it means the surrendering of certain rights and interests by individual countries. If the O.A.U. fails to stamp out imperialism and neo - colonialism on the continent, an additional organization should be formed to achieve that goal.

OAKLAND, Ca. - Grove St. College (formerly Merritt Junior College until last spring, and Oakland City College before that), a community college on the Berkeley - Oakland border, is campus for oppressed nationalities of California's Peralta Community College District, an area embracing the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Piedmont. LOCATED IN Black north Oakland, the tiny campus of eight acres — the size of a city block — is a depressing looking blend of cement, portable classrooms and an unused condemned«building. But its spirit is alive: bongo drums and improvised musical instruments, "revolutionary" politics, "relevant" subjects, good teaching and friendship. But by March, even though Grove's president, Norvell Smith, kept saying he was on the community's side, vitally needed nursing and trade skills programs were eliminated, and course offerings were cut by two thirds. Students called another strike. The gym, business and computer buildings were occupied until helicoptered police subdued the students. But the strike "convinced" the administration to keep the campus open for another quarter year. In the spring and summer the struggle with the trustees continued and a further reprieve was given — the campus now being budgeted until June 1972. When the fall quarter started, apathy and demoralization' reigned, reinforced by an enrollment that had been reduced to 1200 full time students. To correct this dangerous mood, the SOC group (Save Our College), an umbrella organization, was formed and renewed Grove St.'s vitality. With full support of all campus groups and some citizens' groups, SOC pressured the Berkeley City Council into passing a

resolution, sponsored by Black councilmen D'army Bailey and Ira Simmons, to urge the Peralta trustees to make Grove St. the "permanent nucleus of the promised fourth college." Some weeks later the same SOC group forestalled an end run attempt to close Grove by helping block the board's bid to place the fourth campus on the expensive and inaccessible Berkeley waterfront. Even though SOC brought a "creative tension" to the campus by its belief that "the ghetto should be converted into a liveable and workable place" and not be abandoned, nothing unified Grove more than the grandstanding statement of the politically ambitious president of the trustees, Mai Michaels, who urged the closing of the college in the spring. As a result, the regular meeting of the Peralta college district trustees saw the place overflowing with Grove supporters. The first of 23 brilliant speakers for Grove was the Black Student Union's Thurman Sherrill who urged the trustees to keep Grove open "continuously until such time as the new flatlands facility is completed." And to ensure a "viable curriculum." Sam Robinson, of the New World Organization, SOC and (Continued on page 6)

Community's student government, stated that in a survey he took as part of a group, many students on all the campuses "would prefer to go to Grove if the needed programs were offered." Trustee Pat Balen naively replied: " I didn't know that." To which Robinson reported, "Now that you know, what are you going to do about it?" Robinson then attacked Michaels' statement that "Grove is unnecessary because the East Bay has excellent transportation to carry students to other colleges."

Exposing this as a "ridiculous statement," Robinson said it was "like saying there was no need for anyone in this community to get sick because there are many hospitals elsewhere." "YOU DON'T think of us as people," cried Grove's ninth speaker, Marolynne Napier, in an electrifying, heart - rending speech. Mrs. Napier, a welfare mother told how she "walked ten blocks and took two busses with her child and books to get to Grove," the closest campus to her. She doesn't want to be on welfare, she said, and by having a college in her

community she said she could acquire an education which could free her from the welfare roles. Grove's Black faculty members, Theodore Reece, Tim Evans and Mrs. Effie Clark, added solid reasons why the closing of Grove would be a criminal act. Evans, an education teacher, refusing the microphone, spoke directly to the audience. "Certain institutions form a viable part of the whole community. If you. take away the best minds, the locality suffers. Forget the budget and serve the community with a

solid program at Grove. Countries that are broke today always seem to find money to wage war tomorrow," he added as an illustration of how the military budget expands while the education budget fails to meet needs. "Keep the spirit — we'll keep the college in the community!" intoned the Berkeley Black Caucus' Mrs. Maudelle Shirek, also disdaining the microphone. Maudelle brought a message of hope, stirring the crowd with her oratory: " I can't walk too much now, but I have the experience — and these young

New Ghana head may OK return of Nkrumah • By Winston Berry UNITED NATIONS - The ouster from power of the government of Dr. Kofi Busia by Lieutenant - Colonel I.K. Acheampong on January 13 in Ghana was due to more than the petty grievances of junior army officers. A complex of complaints affecting the mass of Ghanaians formed the wave of discontent which Acheampong rode right into the Palace. The contention of the Western press, which continues to blame former President Kwame Nkrumah for Ghana's woes, should be discounted. NKRUMAH WAS ousted six years ago by a military coup led by General Ankrah. Busia was placed at the head of a civilian government in 1969. But at no time since Nkrumah was ousted were Ghana's problems close to solution. Indeed, the situation steadily worsened. After two years in power. Dr. Busia was faced with unemployment, inflation, depressed cocoa prices (Ghana's principal money earner), demands for wage increases by organized workers, a chronic unfavorable balance of

payments and debt service burdens that drained one third of the country's foreign exchange earnings. The situation has been described as the worst the country had experienced since it became independent in 1958. Political agitation against Busia's administration blossomed, and by June 2,1971, there appeared newspaper reports in all Accra newspapers saying a coup d'etat had been threatened by the police unless their conditions were improved. The Ghanaian economy could not have met the demands of the workers, but Busia did not explain this to the workers, nor did he curb the growing luxuries enjoyed by the handful of rich families. Instead, the government enacted a law which froze the assets of the Trade Union Congress and later dismantled the Congress itself. This left the individual unions to shift for themselves in negotiating with employers. The trade unions and the opposition press continued to critize the government for tolerating "corruption" and extravagant living by Busia's aides who they said lived like kings and rode around in Mercedes Benz automobiles.

There must have been some truth in these charges because the number of motor vehicles increased from 44,200 in 1965 to 70,000 in 1969 — 36,000 of them being private cars.

It may be possible, however, for the forces which support him to curb the appetites of the rich and to take steps toward the stated objectives of the Justice Party and the trade unions — the renationalization of most of the enterprises and the delegating of control over them to the workers.

A witty but hard - hitting speaker was a 43 - year - old, greying Black veteran, Jason Wilkinson, of the student government and student Co op. Turning his back to the trustees, Wilkinkson casually addressed the audience: "Here is the situation of the peasants coming to the feudal dukes. All the homes around Grove pay taxes. Yet we have to beg (Commissioner) Michaels says enrollment will be lower because of declining high school figures. What about returning Viet Nam veterans coming to claim their crumbs. And what about the large number of unemployed people?" The father of three college age children, Wilkinson lives three blocks from Grove, whose location is important to the education of several members of his family. AS MIDNIGHT was drawing near, the parade of speakers finished. Then someone shouted from the audience, "Will you vote on the Black Student Union's resolution?" TO THE CROWD'S surprise, a similar resolution was moved by a trustee and passed 4-2. Grove will be kept open until a fourth college is built. But where it will be built is still unknown. The Grove Street community knows promises won't keep a college in their neighborhood.

One of the primary issues on the organization's agenda was "the National Wage Freeze and unemployment and its effect on the rank and file.'' A decidedly militant tone was set in the opening session and prevailed throughout the meeting as delegates pointed up national and international forces at work and repeatedly steered the group toward adoption of a nationally - based strategy calculated to deal

racist union practices and key Nixon administration anti labor policies. Organized by its present National Chairman, Rayfield Mooty, who has been a steelworker for more than forty years. Ad Hoc came to the fore with a three - point program in 1964 that aimed at curbing blatant discrimination within the international Steelworkers' union by placing Blacks in key union positions. Having pushed a few rank and - file Blacks up to staff positions, Ad Hoc soon found that many of them were later co - opted by the union and used to work counter to Ad Hoc goals. Mooty was one of the first to admit this, "We just can't keep going down the same road, we have to expand our program and develop a new approach," he told the group.. The mew approach included action taken to tighten up the organization's structure by overhauling its ground rules to provide for greater discipline, yet more autonomy and political involvement at the local level; and all - out effort to mobilize the union's more than 250,000 Blacks to actively support its efforts; as well as greater participation in steelworker coalitions and labor caucuses in order to maximize their effectiveness. The meeting drew delegations from such major steel centers as Gary, Indiana, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other cities across the country. Some of the key resolutions to come out of the session included one expressing vigorous opposition to the Viet Nam war; another demanded that accused Black activist Angela Davis "be granted her constitutional right to bail." while yet another set up a watchdog committee to block

use of the union's pension fund monies for insidious investment purposes such as in the fascist - racist regimes of South Africa and Rhodesia. However, the resolution that triggered the greatest response from delegates and crystallized a broad range of Nixon - inspired anti - labor measures, was that which presaged a frontal assault on the issue of "productivity." A little known term to the laymen, "productivity" is a new point of thrust in the Nixon administration corporate strategy. It" is fast becoming the labor counterpart to the administration's already devastating national program of "new prosperity." Productivity literally means the rate of output per man hour of work. However, in recent months the term has become the byword for a "get tough" campaign directed at industrial workers who practice the nation's wealth. Its aims, in the twisted words of President Nixon, is a return to the "American spirit of hard work." But, in the steelworkers" idiom it is reminiscent of the sweatshop days of yesteryear, which is still prevalent among many Black workers who perform the dirtiest and most hazardous jobs in the mill. The upshot of the scheme is that workers must be driven to work even harder, with no increase in pay for an indefinite period, and a calculated decrease in the work force, in order to boost industrial profits and ostensibly make U.S. products (steel in this case) "more competitive" on the world market. In other words the campaign will portray to the nation that it is the demands of common

people for more money to meet inflation that is responsible for rising prices and accompanying inflation. In line with the plan, Nixon shrewdly sidestepped the crucial issue of cutting into industrial profits and instead appointed a National Commission of Productivity charged with the task of coming up with a formula that will "lead to more stable prices." This the government itself is invading what is claimed to be "private enterprise" in order to help the bosses bleed the employees. Conviction overturned testify to the prejudice against Johnson, that had prevailed in Harris County as one of the area's most vocal Black militants. The list of witnesses stretched from organizers of the Lee Otis Johnson Defense Committee to the chief of police and the district attorney who prosecuted Johnson. I Katherine Tarte. an organizer for the defense committee testified that "People didn't like him (Johnson), even the liberals." AS A LOCAL SNCC activist. Johnson has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Aside from speaking at numerous rallies, he had appeared on a local television discussion of

the city's racial problems with a University of Houston social psychologist who called him "childish, disruptive and immature."

Countermeasures, at the University of Kentucky, engineers and governmental officials discuss the latest advances in police gadgetry. During the latest Carnahan Conference, engineers from Sylvania's SocioSystems Laboratory reported on "The World's First Police Operated Low-Light-Level Television System." The equipment, which they claim is capable of discerning a man-sized object in extreme darkness from more than a half - mile away, has been installed high above the streets of Mt. Vernon, New York. The Justice Department, which financed the project with a $47,000 grant from its Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, hopes to assess the public reaction to 24hour covert surveillance. "Only time will tell," concluded the Sylvania engineers, "if citizens will object to a "Big Brother" type atmosphere." BUT THE NIXON Administration is hot waiting for time to tell if citizens will object. Earlier this year, a study funded by the Justice Department recommended 24hour television surveillance of city streets. The recommendation was made by a committee of the National Academy of Engineering, an elite group of corporate engineering executives that advise the

of the military for detecting the night - fighting Vietnamese guerrillas. The equipment was declassified presumably at the request of the Justice Department, in 1969. , Such military suppliers as RCA, Raytheon, and Aerojet General, now sell police versions at prices ranging from $2000 to $8000 each. The Justice Department's Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) hopes to make available to the police a "snooperscope" priced under $600. The enthusiasm of the police for night vision equipment is surpassed only by that of the electronics industry. One executive has predicted that by the end of 1972, virtually all of the 40,000 police departments in the United States will be using night vision equipment. The Electronics Industries Association has estimated the annual market in law enforcement electronics at $400 million, most of which comes from LEAA grants. The police can spend their money on "command & control" systems, "voiceprint" equipment, mobile digital teleprinters, and laser fingerprint analyzers: a Dick Tracy bonanza. At such annual gatherings as the National Symposium on Law Enforcement, Science and Technology, in Chicago, and the Carnahan Conference on Electronic Crime

i n Viet federal government on technological matters. (Interestingly, the committee members were executives of industries that would profit if their recommendations were accepted.) To test the effectiveness of 24hour TV surveillance, the committee urged the Nixon Administration to implement a pilot program involving the use of 140 low-light television cameras, deployed at every other intersection throughout an urban neighborhood covering two square miles. Of the estimated $1.5 million yearly cost, over $600,000 would go for the salaries of 175 "viewers." These men — in addition to receiving two dollars an hour for watching the tube — would have the opportunity to zoom in on exciting street scenes, such as a game of handball or a goodnight kiss after a teenage date. The current sensor and TV surveillance projects are small scale, but the combined interests of engineers, industry, and government are pushing for rapid escalation, unimpeded by legal regulation. Paul Baran, an engineer with the Rand Corporation, warned in 1967 that by permitting the unrestricted adoption of sophisticated technology by the police, "we could easily end up with the most effective, oppressive police state ever created."

Under Texas law. Johnson could have been given life for passing the one joint, although at the time, the D.A. had only asked the jury to give him a 20 year sentence. So now it's official — what Lee Otis Johnson's supporters have been saying for almost four years — that he never received a fair trial. It's even possible that the other thing they have been insisting for years may be made official. " Lee Otis Johnson Must Be Set F.ee."

Struggle Shows Why W a n t Weak EEOC

Special To Muhammad Speaks)

WASHINGTON — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently presented to the Federal Communications Commission a 290-page study taken from 30 metropolitan areas which exposed the Bell System for its discriminatory practices against minority groups and women. B E L L SYSTEM employs more people than any other company in the United States, and controls 94 per cent of all telephone business in this country. It hires approximately 200,000 people a year and is one of the largest privately owned companies in the world. Since 55 per cent of all Bell employees are women, which is a larger percentage than in most industries, it is possible to take a good look at Bell in light of the company's long history of sex discrimination policies. More and more, the lowest paying jobs are going specifically to Black women, which adds another layer of discrimination to this group. Most of the public's contact with Bell Telephone comes through women, either the operators or lower level service representatives. In all the subsidiary companies, which are

governed by established company rules, 90 per cent of the jobs fall into five general categories: accounting, commercial, marketing, plant and traffic. The two largest departments are Plant and Traffic which employs over two-thirds of all employees. Over 85 per cent of all plant workers are men while 97.3 per cent of all traffic employees are women; .40 per cent of all female Bell employees are operators. EMPLOYEES HARASSED In the 30 metropolitan areas covered by the EEOC report, the maximum annual salary for operators ranged between $5,000 and $6,000 which compares with the clerical salaries of the Plant Department. Except for a handful of janitors and porters, clerical work is the only "woman's"

job in the Plant Department and is the lowest paying. The rest of the Plant Department jobs are men's positions which have a salary range from $7,500 to $10,000-annually. Low pay is not the only problem with the job of

UNITED NATIONS (AWA) The latest news reaching here from Namibia (South West Africa) where 15,000 Black workers have tied up> the economy is that the white South African occupiers of the territory have prepared settlement terms to be offered soon.

THE TERMS, according to AWA's informants, include ending the contract labor system and instituting hiring halls in the "Bantustans" or

"homelands." Since early December, 1971, when the Ovambo workers left the mines and service jobs, production of gold and diamonds has been at a standstill. The South African cabinet had to meet on the issue, as the Ovambos were sent back to their "homeland" located in the northern part of Namibia. The 350,000 Ovambos, 45 per cent of the entire Namibian population, were considered the most moderate of Namibia's several communities. Indeed, so sure was South Africa of the Ovambos that they proposed a plebscite on self determination to the International Court of Justice. South Africa was sure the Ovambos would vote with the government, thus offsetting opposition that might come from other areas.

But the strike of the Ovambos has proven the government wrong. An Ovambo explaining the position of his people to a reporter said recently the Ovambos are proud of their tribal identity, but they wish to express their nationhood through an independent Namibia. Under the contract labor system, the Black workers were recruited by an agency called the South West African Native Labor Association, staffed by many Black opportunists. The agency received from the employer a sum of $90 a year for each laborer recruited. The Black workers received an average of $12 per month. They had to live in compounds for the duration of their contracts, usually one year. Wives and members of their families were not allowed to accompany them, for the work sites were in "white" locations. Under the revised system, reportedly to be proposed by South African authorities as the basis of a settlement, hiring halls would be in charge of Ovambo chiefs, and "home leaves" would be granted to workers each iwo months. The Black workers are demanding a complete overhaul of the contract labor system. They wish to see a free labor market established in which they could apply to any employer for a job and be free to change employers without being subject to penalties, including prison terms. your back screaming. Pick up a light.' said one operator. This continuous harassment by company supervisors, used as a work speed up tactic, has often backfired on the management. In California. Spanish operators got tired of being treated unfairly by the company and refused to take Spanish calls. Although the operators' action resulted in some firings, the trouble faced by management soon made them take a softer approach toward the Spanish operators. BELL POLICY: HIRE B L A C K , P A Y LOW The E E O C report states that half of the Black workers at Bell are operators. If you are a Black woman at Bell Telephone there is a 90 per cent chance vou will be an

operator. In the areas polled by the study. 20 per cent of all Bell employees are operators. This overbalance of Black women at Bell Telephone points out the discriminatory practices against Black men against women and against Black women. All of these discriminatory practices are done with the complete approval of the Bell management. In 1969 American Telephone and Telegraph Vice President Walter Straley told the presidents of the Bell Subsidiaries that their companies should be in tune to the segment of people who would work for "as little as $4,000 to $5,000 a year.'' He went on to say: "It is therefore just a plain fact that in today's world, telephone company wages are

more in line with Black expectations- and the tighter the labor market the more this is true. There are not enough white, middle class, successoriented men and women in the labor force — or at least that portion of the labor force available to the telephone companies to supply our requirements. "It is therefore perfectly plain that we need non-white employees. Not because we are good citizens. Or because it is the law as well as the national goal to give them employment. We need them because we have so many jobs to fill and they will take them."

Many of the problems confronting E E O C , which was created as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to outlaw job discrimination on the basis of sex. race or national origin, stems from the lack of enforcement powers from Congress, which is currently at odds on whether to give E E O C more power. The Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare cleared legislation that would

By Edna Mae 2X Vaughn Flint, Mich. THE WORD give in its broadest sense means to administer; control in behalf of others. Inform; meaning to tell, wise up, or have one to understand. Deliver; meaning to save from evil or trouble; to set free. But even in its broadest sense, the word "give" cannot describe the contribution made by our Beloved leader and teacher, the most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, in relation to his lost people. To illustrate, let us examine each action* word defined above in relation to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. First, the manifestation of the rise of a totally dehumanized people called Negroes, is evident of the Wisdom and Knowledge from Our (God) Allah, which is being administered by His Servant, Messenger Muhammad.

He was subjected to prison for the sake of his people. He has worked day and night to fulfill his mission of delivering his people from the fall of white America. He has suffered illness due to over work in,behalf of them.

I can recall so vividly how my heart went out for The Honorable Elijah Muhammad as my mind reflect the words written by him which appeared in September 10, 1971, issue of Muhammad Speaks Newspaper. It was in reply to Brother Fredrick 2X Pearls' donation of $50 toward building Damascan style homes in Chicago. " I thank you and everyone who can give a little change on these homes. Although I have not asked anyone for help, I appreciate your help, if you are well able to do so."

The two words "little change" stays in my mind as it expresses the love, deep devotion, and humbleness that our Beloved Leader and Secondly, Messenger Teacher shows for his people. LOGIC POINTS TO MUHAMMAD

-By Dr. Abdul Salaam

Logic is defined as the science or art of reasoning as applied to a department of KNOWLEDGE. The behavioural scientist interested in dispassionately surveying a problem in human relations has at his command a system of logic that he can put to work for himself to produce a real solution to a real problem. However to produce a real solution, a lasting solution, ones' system of logic, ones' fund of KNOWLEDGE must be faultless, it should be beyond reproach and rooted in the Universal order of things. Now let's see, do we, The Black peoples of America have a problem? Indeed we do and it is some kind of a problem too, a universal problem for without a doubt the challenge now being issued by almost 30 million Black People here in America for Freedom, Justice and Equality is being heard around the world. It has set America on edge and rocked its very foundation. But what or who can solve this most vexing problem? Where can a problem that has been smoldering for over 400 years be picked up without burning the solution giver? What say then we apply our system of logic is the science or art of reasoning as applied to a

department of KNOWLEDGE.

In order to reason logically then, you must have a fund of KNOWLEDGE. If the reasoning is to be relevant and beneficial to Black people who are both the victims of the problem and the seekers of the solution as well, this fund of knowledge must be based and rooted in truth. To relate something to ones' self it certainly seems logical to say one should KNOW oneself, right? Alright Mr. Higgenbottom, who are you? Come on now Blackman, speak up! Where did you get the "glad to have" knowledge and welcome information that you are not a Negro (with or without a capital N)? From what source, year after year hath come the knowledge wisdom and understanding that BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, that BLACK IS FIRST, that BLACK IS ORIGINAL hmmm-m? Think it over now. If you tell me your white man taught Christian preacher (or any other kind of preacher) or your "just woke up yesterday" leader told you, I say go back and check it out. Where did he get it from? What we keep pushing you for now is to come face to face with the very base of the Black evolution, with the very root source of Black Power, with a real live Messenger of God Himself,

with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Once you face up to this essential and indisputable fact your logic knows no bounds for you have now connected yourself with an unending source of Divine Knowledge, the best kind of knowledge with which to build any system of logic. Face it brother and you too sister, from whence came your knowledge as a Negro? White folks, right? White folks wrote the books and built the entire educational system from which we emerged with all kinds of degrees yet still Negroes. But thanks to Allah, the true and living God, for more than forty years now a voice has been raised in the wilderness bent on raising his mentally dead people. Muhammad's voice is, a voice totally blending with and accurately echoing the Will of the Divine Supreme Being, the voice of a man who loves us more than we love ourselves, the voice of compassion and strength, the voice of a man with unbelievable yet totally contained power, the voice of a man who has never stepped beyond the bounds of humility itself, the voice of a man of, and with, God, the voice of the last Messenger to us all The Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

THE title of this article is taken from the HOLY QUR AN, Chapter 14: 22, Sec. 4, 'And the devil will say, when the matter is decided: Surely Allah promised you a promise of truth and I promised you, then failed you. And I had no authority over you, except that I called you and you obeyed me; so blame me not but blame yourselves. I cannot come to your help, nor can you come to my help. I deny your associating me with Allah before ' IT IS VERY CLEAR, and understandable, why the devil never did represent the HOLY QUR'AN to the Black Man in America! He never did represent the HOLY QUR'AN to us because the HOLY QUR'AN is a book, or scripture, that is 100% true, so Allah, in the Person of MASTER FARD MUHAMMAD, to Whom Praises are due forever, Taught me. THE above verse shows us that the devil has always deceived the people, and told the people other than the truth. The devil still tells the people other than the truth. THE devil admits in this verse (22) that 'Allah (God) promised you a promise of truth.' THINK OVER THAT! The devil confesses that Allah's (God's) promise is true! BUT, THE devil says in the same verse that 'he (devil) promised you, then failed you.' And that 'he (devil) had no authority over you to force you to believe and to follow him! (devil)!... that T (devil) called you.' AND then the devil denies the responsibility for causing you to err by taking him (devil) for a guide, instead of accepting Allah (God) for your guide. SO, the devil goes so far as to say that 'you obeyed him (devil) He denied that he was the one that should be obeyed. It was Allah (God) whom you should obey, for the truth. THEN, the devil says to you, 'not to blame him (devil)' but, 'blame yourself.' The devil confesses ' I (devil) cannot come to your help; nor can you come to my (devil's) help.' The devil cannot help you because the devil was not made to help people into the knowledge of truth... right - doing. THE NATURE TO HELP people into the knowledge of right - doing was not put into the devil, by his maker (Yakub). Neither one, the devil or his follower... neither can help the other, for they are both under the chastisement of Allah (God). THEN, the devil tells his followers that

he denies 'their associating him with Allah before.' This before means 'before the truth came — the truth which shows the devil up. The truth also shows up those who were seeking the truth. It shows those who are willing to follow the devil after the truth is come, as being willing to follow an untruthful one, as the devil is an untruthful one. T H E R E is no truth in the devil, for the devil was not made with truth. The devil was made under falsehood... other than truth. This is the way white people were made! They were not made in truth. White people were made in the essence of falsehood, so that they could fool the truthful people (Black People). SO, the devil warns us not to blame him for the hell that he caused us to taste, because of following him. IT is your fault for even before the confirmation of the truth, the devil did not believe in your representing him as the equal with the God of Truth, nor representing him as being above even the God of Truth! BUT, the devil lets you go on doing this, until you and the devil come face to face with the truth of God, which Came from the Presence and the Teachings of MASTER FARD MUHAMMAD, God in Person, to Whom Praises are due forever. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for the devil to help you in the Day of Judgement, because in the Day of Judgement, the devil is the object to be judged and destroyed! ONCE we know that we are being bitten by the snake, in the grass (and we did not see the snake in the grass); then when we find the snake in the grass, our only thought is to kill the snake, so that the snake does not bite or sting another person. BUT, the devil is brought face to face with the truth; and so is the Black Man of the World, and those Black People who have relied on the white race to aid them against the Judgement, Punishment and Destruction, by Allah. THE devil admits that you are a fool for seeking his help, as the devil has no power over Allah (God). In another place in the HOLY QUR'AN, the devil's followers admit that they were following the devil and 'could not the devil avert one of the days of chastisement that A Hah (God) will put upon the disbelievers as well as the devil's followers?' BUT, the devil denies their seeking him to help and to aid them against Allah. The devil has no power against Allah! TRUTH IS SURELY CONFIRMED. It

is made clear that the white race is a race of devils, and Black People have believed in the devil, and they have taken the devil for a god! THIS is why I have not converted the whole Black Nation in America! The Black People believe that the white race has the power to divert the chastisement of God, which has been promised by the prophecy of the prophets, and of the scriptures. From Genesis to Revelation, we are told that the devil is Under Sentence to be Destroyed! THE HOLY QUR'AN takes it up, and verifies that which is said of the devil, in the Bible. It goes so far as — both books — call the devil the 'fuel of hell.' AND Y E T , Black Brother and Black Sister the devil has made you to love him! And you want to be partakers of hell with him, — except when you see the fire of hell! WHEN YOU S E E THE F I R E , you will deny the devil; as the devil will deny you. My Black Brothers and Black Sisters, you actually love this people! MY BLACK BROTHERS AND BLACK SISTERS, you will hate me for the love of the devil. You would kill me, if you could get to me, through the ring of protection, that Allah (God) Has Thrown around me. THE devil has good knowledge of this ring of protection. And the devil has shown to me, great respect. I cannot say that the devil disrespects me. The devil respects me; it is you Black Brother who disrespects me. Your disrespect of me makes you to disrespect yourself. TRUTH IS CONFIRMED. We are in a time, now, that one cannot help the other, because we are in the time that was prophecied of, by the prophets of old! THE prophets prophecied that the Day of Judgement would come — the Judgement between the Righteous and the wicked. So, this is the time of the Judgement between the Righteous and the wicked. ALL the devil has to do is just call you, and you go running! BLACK BROTHERS and Black sisters, you blame the devil for the war that the devil is fighting, between himself and the Hindu. We sometimes call the Hindu, Buddhists. You run with the devil to the war, to help the devil to fight another people who are not your Brothers and sisters — in the way of right. THE HINDU — Allah (God) Told me that tthe Hindu — has been the enemy of Allah (God) for 35,000 years! This is why the Hindu and the Christians are fighting with each other. The war between the

following the God of Truth and Righteousness, although we claimed to be from the God of Truth and Righetousness! WE, the Black People are righteous, by nature. The devil is wicked by nature. There is much that I am teaching you from our Lord, that is so good for you, that you are now beginning to recognize it. BUT, to seek a way to satisfy our evil open enemy, the devil — this puts you in the position to be made ashamed, disgraced and to be punished. I E V E N ask you all day long and all night long to COME, FOLLOW M E ! PUT Y O U R S E L F IN H E A V E N AT ONCE! You are begging the devils to give you a place among them. You want to be honored by the enemy of God and man (Black Man). THE Judgement is now come to the enemy of the Righteous. TRUTH IS CONFIRMED! The arch - deceiver is made manifest to be none other than the white race. Truth also makes manifest the Black lovers of the devil! JOIN ONTO YOUR OWN BLACK

Hindu and the Christians is The Order of God! Allah (God) Wants to rid the earth of both the Hindu and the Christian; to CONFIRM T H E TRUTH of the HOLY QUR'AN, in the 61st Chapter, Verse 9, where it is written, that 'Allah (God) Has Sent the Messenger, with the true religion, that he may make it overcome the religions, all of the, though the polytheists may be averse.' AGAIN, T H E HOLY QURAN teaches us, in another Chapter, that 'he who comes up on the day of Resurrection, with any other religion, other than Islam, Allah will not accept it!' TRUTH IS CONFIRMED! Today you believe that you are a prided Black Man. But, you used to hate to be called Black. Now you love to be called Black. THIS, shows again, how far you once were off, from the truth. We did not know our ownself. We hated Black and loved white, for we did not KNOW either one, Black or white! BUT, the white man had called us to come obey and follow him. NOW, it has taken us 400 years to learn that we were following the devil; and not

WI>at Islam Ha^ Done F o r AVe T h e O r i g i n a l people: T^he lOoman in Dslam Soul of B l a c k n e s s Parti By Mio. Edwin X (Taylor) Peoria, 111. In December 1971, the question is made by our Black brother, the Orthodox Muslim, or the Conventional Muslims, that there may be a difference between a Black Muslim — we who are followers of The

Honorable Elijah Muhammad and our brother Muslims from the East. THE HONORABLE Elijah Muhammad, a man from the face of Allah, to Whom Praises are due forever, reveals to us that every Black Man under the Sun is born a Muslim by Nature and because we are Black, we are sometimes

A Cherishable Debt By Sister Claudine X Temple No. 26-B Oakland, California WE AS Muslim women will forever be indebted to our Beloved Leader and Teacher. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, who has uplifted us, the Black women in the heUs of North America, from a very low dusty position. We eternally praise and thank Allah, in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad for His Divine Messenger, who has given us the glorious crown of Supreme Wisdom, Knowledge, understanding and the highest of honors that can be bestowed upon any nation of women. The so-called Negro women in America has tread a very poor spiritual, moral and cultural road, which has sunken her status to the lowest position among the best civilized women. We thank our Beloved Leader. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, who has given us light in many phases, in knowing why we have been in numerous ways in such a down trodden condition. Let us take a mental trip back to many of our sisters childbirth training, that still remain deeply rooted, within many socalled Negroes today. As children we were taught to believe in the superiority of the white women and her race. We were told that to get ahead, we must pattern ourselves after the social status of the white race, which in reality is designed for the white race's benefit primarily. These things along with others helped to make the white society ideal before our eyesight. We as Black women thought the criteria in being dignified, honorable and respected, was to excel in imitating the white woman. We have in the past gone to the extreme in painting our faces with cosmetics, dying and tinting our hair, bleaching our skin to look like her. EVEN TODAY our sisters strive to out dress her in styles

V

that were patterned after the white woman's very nature, the love to be nude or close to it. Some of our sisters like to believe because they advocate blackness. that this has separated her from following after the white woman, yet her ways and habits are still like the white woman. This brings us to another very important point that The Honorable Elijah Muhammad has made plain to us. By disowning any qualities of naturalness and the rejection of self trying to imitate the white woman, we became a symbolic image of racial shame, mockery and pity. We have been the open and broad highway through which the enemies and strangers have traveled to destroy the morals of our Nation. Little did we know then that no nation in the world is respected and honored above the respect and honor that a people bestow upon their women. The -Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad has exalted the Black women who follow him to heights that we are unable to measure. That once shameless, aggressive, loud, boisterous Black woman now has absorbed the ingredients from Allah's Messenger that enables her to be extremely intelligent, submissive, modest, refined, and well cultured. That Black woman who once carried herself in a manner that invited the insults of all she encountered now conducts herself in a manner at home and abroad that demands the respect of all. SO WE as Muslim Women will also forever be indebted to Allah, in The Person of Master Fard Muhammad, for His Divine Messenger. Our most precious Leader and Teacher and Guide, The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

called a "Black Muslim.'' The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said "the only Real Muslims are Black Muslims." The Honorable Elijah Muhammad also revealed that there are some of the white race who are Muslims by faith, the white race is the only people on Earth that are not real Muslims or Black Muslims by Nature. These poor Orthodox or Conventional Muslims brothers fail to understand as our Leader, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad reveals to us that our God Allah, is a God of continuous progress as from the beginning. These poor Orthodox or Conventional Muslims brothers who write in the Harvey, 111. paper "The Chicago South Suburban News," accused our Leader The Honorable Elijah Muhammad as being no different than the Klu Klux Klan, a part of the white race who openly tell you they would like to kill the Black Man. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad revealed that some 99% of our Muslim brothers from the East have been deceived one way or another; read (Holy Quran 7:17), The devil said to Allah: " I shall certainly come upon them from before them and from behind them; and from their right and from their left; and Thou wilt not find most of them thankful." The devil swore to them that he was a sincere advisor (1:21), the Holy Quran further says: "Surely they took the devils for friends instead of Allah, and they think that they are right guided." (7:30). Not only the so - called Negroes are deceived by this race of devils, but even many of the Asiatic Muslims do not know that the white race are devils. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad knows and we. the Muslims know that some of you hate The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and we the Muslims for teaching this manifest truth. JESUS IN BIBLE, the 8th Ch. of John v. 44: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie. he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." And our Beloved brother Jesus was killed at the hands of this race of devils.

By Margary Hassain In the Name of Allah, Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are due forever. The Woman In Islam Gives all Holy Praises and Thanksgiving to Allah (God) for Giving us a Divine, Leader, Teacher and Guide, MESSENGER MUHAMMAD.

CHILDREN SEPARATION IN THE HOME MESSENGER MUHAMMAD teaches The Woman in Islam, that we are in the change of worlds. The old world of evil a r , d filth is being Divinely Broken up by, the Hand of Allah (God). MESSENGER MUHAMMAD teaches us that this is the time of separation of nations and peoples... and it is the time of separation in homes. Many mates find that they can no longer live together for they find that they are not mated at all. One is different from the other. MANY HUSBANDS and wives, in former times, used to reason that they stayed together for the sake of the children, while, in truth, one or the other was really harmful spiritually or physically, for the children. BUT, today, man and wife, who are unalike, are separating. Many men -and women who were once 'unavailable' for marriage are now 'available' — with children. MESSENGER MUHAMMAD teaches us that we should take care when seeking a mate, for in Islam, we are building a strong, permanent world —a strong permanent home. MESSENGER MUHAMMAD teaches us that when we believe and practice Islam, Allah (God) Gives us a new heart — a new mind. We become good Muslims. A good Muslim woman can be a good mother to any good Muslims child. A good Muslim man can be a good father, a good provider and good protector, in his new Muslim home. BLACK BELIEVING Sisters, when thinking of marriage to a believing Black brother, be sure to study and learn his children before taking on the the responsibility of loving, caring for and raising his children, by a former marriage. Do his children love and seek to practice truth, justice and righteousness. Are they respectful? MESSENGER MUHAMMAD teaches us that in order to have heaven in our homes, the members of the house-hold must be the people of peace. THE WOMAN IN ISLAM Gives all Holy Praises to Allah (God) for His Divine MESSENGER MUHAMMAD, our Divine Guide and his Divine Message. ALLAH IS THE GREATEST!

Minister credits M u h a m m a d for 'wonderful' changes in world By Minister William 3X Muhammad's Temple Kansas City, Kansas The world is witnessing a great change coming over a people, called Negroes. A people who have hated self and loved their enemies. A people who have been deprived, neglected and despised by the enemy and self. A people who have robbed, killed, stolen from and who have stool pidgeoned on one another. A people who worshipped that which they knew not what. To this people something wonderful is happening. THE GREAT works of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad are bringing the above conditions to a halt: BibleMalachi 3:1 "Behold I will send my Messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me." In his preparing the way before Almighty Allah, he is cleaning us up and causing us (so-called Negroes) to love and respect one another. Messenger Muhammad, in preparing the way before Allah, has given us the desire

for the first time in our lives to be proud of being Black. He is ridding us from evil, filthy and indecent practices. Now we see ourselves (so-called Negroes) turning to Almighty Allah, that we may offer unto Him an offering in Righteousness, which is mentioned in the 3rd verse. THE INTELLIGENCE of White America bears witness that what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is doing for his people is an exciting wonder, it is marvelous, astonishing, and unusually good, it is to be admired. Holy Quran - 47:2 "And those who believe in that which has been revealed to Muhammad — and it is the truth from their Lord — He will remove their evil from them and improve their condition." Any fool, hypocrite or disbeliever that plans evil or harm against this Wonderful Lamb of God, is only planning his own destruction! As -Salaam -Alaikum

Prisoner hits 'legal genocide9

NEEDLESS TO say, I am a castigated prisoner, or a Black victim of legal genocide which is so much a part of the Black experience in Illinois. All of which is the reason for this letter. Hopefully, you will find my case worthy of mention in your paper. Being completely frank, I personally feel that Black people should become conscious of the real issues facing their own race in this country, and jobs, as such is not the problems. It has been my experience that Blacks are being carefully and cleverly exterminated through the power structure's use of the police and the courts, not to mention the immoral, illegal war in Viet Nam which has taken thousands of Black lives. In October, 1971, I filed a million dollar law suit against the State's Attorney and police of Winnebago County, Rockford, Illinois. It is a matter of record, that I was arrested, charged, tried and convicted of a crime which has its foundation based in fraud and perjury. A white woman claimed that I had robbed her of approximately two hundred dollars in Rockford, Illinois, August 16, 1969, before Magistrate Judge Stuart C. Hyer, of the Winnebago County Circuit Court, Rockford, Illinois, August 17, 1969, while I was being held in Champaign, Illionis, 190 miles away. This woman admitted that she did not know me by name, and she had not seen a picture of me. Therefore, before the case came to trial, I asked the court the question, (How could a person be charged with a crime when the alleged witness had not made a prerequisite identification?) The court refused to answer. In 1970, a young Black man was arrested within the city limits MOSES'WASHER SERVICE

of Rockford, Illinois, and subsequently charged with armed robbery.

During police interrogation, Raymond Talley Jr., confessed to having robbed the O'Donnell supermarket, 1224 South Main Street, Rockford, Illinois. The crime for which I had been convicted.During 1970, Talley, confessed formally to the crime twice. The police officer as so called, Roland Donelli, who brought the State witness to Champaign, Illionis to identify me, and I mean that in a very real sense. Yet, the witness who has signed a criminal complaint and sanctioned a warrant before she knew who she was signing it against, told Talley, and I quote: "If you bring your confession to the attention of the court you will be charged with perjury and given twenty years in the penitentiary." Talley, testified at my PostConviction Hearing, and made the above statement to the court. During October, 1971, Talley, was charged by the State's Attorney of Winnebago County, Rockford, Illinois, with perjury, and again, without filing a criminal complaint, which is the first requirement before any criminal action is taken in any case. TALLEY, WAS not charged with perjury because he told a lie, which should appear without explanation, he is

being persecuted because he had the gall to accuse a white policeman and the State's Attorney with having lied, which I can and did prove that they did do.

It is no accident that 78 per cent of the population of American prisons are Black men and women, and by the same token, it is naive to consider that white people have all of a sudden stopped violating the law. However, here we are, and here we will remain until Black people become aware of what is happening (Black legal genocide. ) Sincerely Your Brother John C. K. Gaston, Reg. No. 31416 P.O. D r u g deaths sweeping Mew Y o r k NEW YORK — Overdoses of heroin, morphine, methadone, codeine and other narcotics were responsible for 1,259 deaths in New York City last year. The use of narcotics in New York continues to rise as drug use is the largest single cause of death for New Yorkers between the ages of 15 and 35

with 624 of the total 1,259 being under 24 years old. A total of 342 deaths were attributed to narcotics related homicides, suicides, fatal accidents or to diseases like tuberculosis and alcoholism among addicts. There is an over - all rise in deaths related to narcotics of 17.3 per cent.

A U T O

P A R T S

A borough - by - borough comparison shows that the section of Manhattan continues to lead in the number of deaths (550), followed by Brooklyn (306) and the Bronx (251). However, the most striking statistic centers around Queens, which showed a rise of 51.6 per cent, illustrating the fact that drug addition is no longer identified with the ghetto but has spread from the slums to the more well - off middle - class areas.

Fired accou ntant takes on bank in dress code case CHICAGO - The public has been subjected to a massive dosage of statistics and reports glorifying, and in most cases exaggerating, the gains or progress Black Americans have made economically and socially since the beginning of the modern civil rights era. JUST HOW much fact and fantasy is contained therein can only be ascertained by isolating and analyzing some of the incidents that have taken place in the continuous Black vs white confrontation. For purposes ot brevity, let us examine one such incident of the more recent past.: One day last April, Charles L. Keys, a Black accountant at Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Company, in Chicago, was told by a bank officer that the shape and length of his sideburns conflicted with the bank's new policy on dress and appearance. Eleven days later Keys was fired. Why? Because he adamantly refused to obey orders to shave his sideburns. To concede to their demands, he felt, would be denying his "right to reject the traditional standards set by white men that Black men have been forced to emulate in order to survive in America" a denial of his "right to affirm his individuality as a Black man" and to "express his Blackness," a denial of "a symbolic expression of freedom of speech" The overt racism involved is more apparent when careful attention is given to the personnel record of Keys during his almost two years of employment at the bank.

HIS RECORDS reveal that he was constantly praised and commended for his ability and speed in carrying out assigned duties (and for this reason, mainly, it was recommended that he be rehired "if he changed his attitude".) His areas of assignment were limited to departments that prevented any public contact and thereby eliminating the possibility of any customer complaints against him. Less than three (3) months previously, he had worn a full beard without any complaints or adverse comments from anyone. What his record does not show is the fact that he refused to bow down to the supposed omnipotence of institutionalized racist minds. He not only spoke up, but encouraged others to do the same. Charles L. Keys is 29 years old, an army veteran, married and the father of two children. He is a junior college graduate with a major in Accounting. Prime Minister Sato stressed at a recent news conference that " I am greatly concerned about economic aid to African countries." JAPANESE interest in African countries has nothing to do with humanitarian idealism — Japan's biggest trading partner in the continent by far is still the white supremacist government of South Africa, from whom they imported more than $100 million worth of uranium ore alone.

Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Company is the largest inland and the eighth largest bank in the United States, in terms of total assets. It has twenty-two offices and branches in eighteen foreign countries and employs over 8,000 people with Blacks comprising approximately 2025 percent of the total. FOR THE calendar year ended December 31, 1971, it showed a net operating income of $69,798,000. Current total assets figures are unavailable, but in Sept. 1971, total assets were $9,410,353,058. Keys responded to his dismissal by filing a million dollar damage suit, charging racial discrimination and violation of other constitutional and civil rights.

Perhaps the best known administrative agency Keys complained through before suing, is the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. His initial complaint was filed by Keys on May 13,1971. On September 15, 1971, Keys was informed that his complaint had been dismissed on September 1, 1971, for lack of sufficient evidence.

NOT ONLY is The Fair Employment Practice Commission under-staffed, but a substantial part of the staff is on loan from private industry. The same private industry they are quite often asked to investigate. And who's going to bite the hand that feeds it? Last, but not least, let us keep in mind that the mere mentioning of the name Continental Bank does not exactly instill the willingness

^4 conspiracy exists to protect Wallace f r o m exposure to t r u t h FEBRUARY 11,1972

CHICAGO - Gov. George Wallace's attempts to imitate Hitler are taking the vicious "bantam cock" into supposedly liberal areas of the industrial North. L I K E HITLER, Wallace is concealing the fact that he represents the most brutal, ruthless representatives of white racist financial powers with a public outcry about his supposed concern for "the little man." In Chicago recently, Wallace complained of the real problems faced by overtaxed citizens — referring to "our steelworkers and our beauticians" as examples. But to be convincing his "solution" to the tax burden depends upon the 'ignorance of the groups he proposes to lead. He wants to aim the "little man's" anger only at -oks and at the "tax - exempt status of the Rockefeller foundations and the Ford foundations," as a means of reducing "the income tax burden on the common man." This aims the resentment of the "little man" at the wrong targets and protects the ones responsible for the tax burden. It is the giant corporations themselves, and especially their wasteful military spending, their tax write-offs and exporting of capital and

the national average which is itself inadequate. Wallace began freezing wages long before Nixon. Alabamans who manufacture goods earn $21 dollar a week less than average U.S. wages, though the goods sell for the same prices. They earn $40 a week less than workers in other industrial states. Wallace wants to spend even more than the present 75 per cent of the US budget on weapons manufacturing even though this spending of tax dollars of the "little man" is the prime cause of the

plants overseas that has placed the heavy tax burden on the average citizen. The foundations represent a drop in the bucket when it comes to adding to the average citizen's tax burdens. Obviously Wallace hopes to win votes by promising people relief from tax burdens. But his goal is to unleash the oppressive, taxing forces he represents who wish to follow the nazi pattern of tightening their grip on the average citizen with an out-and-out police state, should they win a national election.

A look at Wallace's record in Alabama, however, quickly exposes the phoniness of his campaign image and indicates that the mass media could "blow him away" simply by printing the truth about his record. Alabama's per capita income is $2,567, 48th place in the country. He raised sales taxes on food to 6<p after promising he would not. He doubled the cost of drivers licenses and tripled the lost of auto tags. Alabama taxes big businesses LOWER than most states do. In Alabama the "little man" earning $5,000 a year pays the same 5c state tax as millionaire businessmen do. The "little man's" children receive only $438 per pupil per year for education from the "champion of the average citizen," which is only half of

Two and one-half billion of it would go to North Viet Nam and the rest to South Viet Nam. This is Kissinger's version, at least, and by revealing, he and Nixon show that they are not interested in negotiating an end to the war. The Vietnamese answered "no" to all the proposals because they insist on fighting until the people of Viet Nam can exercise full control of their country. They answered "no" because they want a total release of the US government's hold on the puppet government of South Viet Nam. Seattle's unemployment rate now stands at 18%, three times the national average. IN CENTRAL Seattle, a predominantly Black area, the unemployment figure runs up to 48%. Now Nixon can point out to them that his man, Kissinger, has attended 12 secret meetings with the North Vietnamese. What Nixon will not point out to them is that he was not interested in a war settlement anyway. He was simply stalling for two and one half to three years until after the 1972 elections.

MASS MEDIA PROTECTING WALLACE Wallace hopes that by fanning backward racial hatred among ignorant whites, that these facts will not come to the "little man's" attention. And if the response of the Chicago press is typical, it will take independent, progressive action to bring the facts to the public. A group of demonstrators withstood icy, 10 degree weather to picket Wallace's appearance. But little if any mention of their opposition, or the facts they presented, appeared in the Chicago newspapers or electronic media. And the Daley trade union * machine also failed to respond to pressures by a rank - and file trade union group, Trade Unionists for Action and Democracy, to counter Wallace's appearance with a large demonstration of unionists denouncing Wallace's union-busting tactics. The union officials, who depend on the same racism and ignorance that Wallace is floating on, tried to blame the rank - and - file for forcing them to bfe 'cautious" in opposing Wallace. So directives went out to ignore any opposition to Wallace by unionists, the Youth Against War and Fascism, concerned Blacks, passers-by and the

Lawyers w h o will defend the poor NEW YORK (LNS) - Marty Erdman is not what is usually called a "movement lawyer." He has been a Legal Aid lawyer in New York for 27 years, and is head of its criminal trial division. LEGAL AID has been consistently in attack from "radical" lawyers for not fighting hard enough to keep its individual, impoverished clients out of jail, and in some cases pressuring them to cop pleas. So when Life Magazine wanted to do a story on the justice system in America, Legal Aid suggested they talk with Erdman. The Life writer went around with Erdman for about two months. Over the time, Erdman, who tends to be pretty cynical, made a number of remarks about defendants, their lawyers and the courts' system. . Finally in March 1971, the article appeared, entitled " I Have Nothing to Do With Justice."

NtWLY LOCATED

In it, Erdman is quoted as saying, "There are so few trial judges who just rule on questions of law and leave guilt or innocence to the jury. And the Appelate Division judges aren't any better. They're the whxxx who became madames" The writer of the article commented in the piece: "Erdman's disrespect for judges is so strong and at times so all - inclusive that it amounts to class hatred." No sooner had the article appeared, Appelate Judges ("the madames") started disbarment proceedings against Erdman for what he said and also the quote from the writer of the article about "class hatred."

(LNS) California State prison authorities are just now putting the finishing touches on an intensive psychiatric prison center at the Vacaville state mental facility to control "the aggressive, destructive, political inmates "• THE NEW FACILITY will house up to 80 prisoners and will open in late February. The prisoners will be taken from the maximum security Adjustment Centers at Soledad, Folsom, and San Quentin. Psychiatrists will administer "adversion therapy" to inmates considered "the most violent." The therapy may include electric and insulin shock, fever treatments, sodium pentothal (truth serum)

interviews, Anectine (a deathsimulating drug), antitestosterone injections (to neutralize sex hormones), electrode brain implants and lobotomies. According to a letter that R.K. Procunier, California Chief of the Dept. of Corrections, wrote on September 8, 1971, to Robert Lawson, Executive Officer of the California Council on Criminal Justice: This letter of intent is to alert you to the development of a proposal to seek funding for a program involving a complex neurosurgical evaluation and treatment program for the violent inmate. Initially, following screening at the Calif. Medical Facility at Vacaville, a period of acute

hospitalization would be involved for a period of 57 days. After this during a period of 2 or 3 weeks the patient would undergo diagnostic studies — surgical and diagnostic procedures would be performed to locate centers of the brain which may have been previously damaged and which could serve as the focus for episodes of violent behavior. If those areas were located and verified that they were indeed the source of aggressive behavior, neurosurgery would be performed. The outlines of the new Vacaville facility have been leaking out to the press for the past few months, but detailed information was not available until November 19. when the Department of Corrections held a "think session" at the University of California at Davis. The meeting was to get support among the psychiatric profession. Fortunately Dr. Edward Opton Jr. a Berkeley research psychologist with a strong liberal orientation, was invited. Opton contacted the Medical Committee for Human Rights to get the shocking information

presented at the conference out to the public. ACCORDING TO Dr. Opton's notes from the meeting, the Vacaville center has become necessary in the eyes of prison administrators because of the catastrophic failure of the relatively new Adjustment Centers demonstrated by

George Jackson's "escape"/ murder from the San Quentin AC. Adjustment Centers are maximum security sections of maximum security prisons. Prison administrators, far from understanding the real causes of prisoner violence — a reaction to the highly (Continued on page 26)

'Violent repressive life they are forced to live, inside the Adjustment Centers — seem to blame it oni "some sort of organic inner agitator,'.' according to Dr. Opton's notes. The meeting was led by Dr. George Bach-y-Rita, the head research psychiatrist at the new unit. He mentioned a few of the treatments his personnel would experiment with. One would be the anti -testosterone injections to counteract sex drive and supposedly reduce the tensions a prisoner feels "without the negative sideeffects in terms of poor selfimage that direct castration creates." Dr. Bach-y-Rita also feels that about 10% of the Adjustment Center inmates would benefit from partial frontal lobotomies in which sections of the brain controlling motivation and drive would be cut out. THIS METHOD usually leaves the patient a passive vegetable capable of only simple tasks. Another experimental technique would be to emplant electrodes in the brain to control behavior directly. But the basic method to be used on most of the prisoners will be "aversion therapy." Aversion therapy is aimed at making the prisoner sick or terrified everytime he gets involved in violence. It works like this: Restaurant & Bakery WE SERVE ASIATIC STYLE cmd AMERICAN COOKED FOOD HOME OF THE ORIGINAL BEAN Pit 12434 SUPERIOR AVENUE CLEVELAND, OHIO PHONE: 681 -9841

YOU DON'T have to worry though according to the administrators, because the Vacaville treatments will be voluntary. "If they don't want to take the drug they don't have to," says Dr. L . J . Pope, Warden of the facility. "If they want to stay coo-coo and stay locked up all their lives that's all right with us." At the end of December, the Department of Corrections

bowed to mounting public and professional pressure and publicly tabled plans for brain surgery on violent inmates at the new Vacaville facility. Director of prison planning and development Walter Barkdull was making no promises, though he said that the brain surgery proposal "hasn't been abandoned, but it's certainly been put into a dormant state." Deputy Chief of the Dept. of Corrections added, "Although the brain surgery part of the program is shelved, the rest of the program will go forward after the first of the year."

CARROLLTON, Miss. — White folks in Carrollton (Carroll County), a small central Mississippi town, think > that their town typifies "southern hospitality." They brag about their county and town. THEY BRAG about the fact that white singer Bobbie Gentry mentioned their county in her song "Ode To Billie Joe" and that Northern white folks came to town about two years ago to film the motion picture, "The Reivers." On the other hand, if you can get local Black folks to talk to you, you can bet that they won't brag about Carrollton and Carroll County. In fact, they will probably tell you a story: the story of the legal lynching of Brother James Pilcher. NO KNOWN REASON FOR ARREST James Pilcher, 19, was born and reared in Carroll County. He is one of the eight children of Mrs. Ola Pilcher. Like many of the Black folks in Carroll County, Brother

Pilcher is poor and uneducated. He dropped out of school in the 7th grade, he can't read or write. However, on or about February 12, 1971, his life changed. On this date, he was accused of raping and murdering Eugenia James, a 35-year-old white nurse and placed in the Carroll County Jail on February 13,1971. The body of Eugenia James was found on a dirt road seven miles on the outside of town. She was stabbed seven times (three times in the front and four times in the back.) Why local law enforcement officials picked up Brother Pilcher and charged him with the murder and rape of Eugenia James, is anybody's guess. Nonetheless, he was jailed and denied all access to his constitutional rights. Immediately after his arrest, the situation got so tense in Carrollton that he had to be removed to the State Penitentiary at Parchman for his own safety. His family was threatened with physical harm. For their own safety, the Pilcher family had to move to

nearby Greenwood. Later on in the year the Pilcher's house was burned to the ground by white night riders. (It wasn't really the Pilcher's house; it was owned by a white plantation owner named James.) WHITE LAWYER GIVES BAD ADVICE

An informant told Muhammad Speaks that conditions got so bad for Brother Pilcher during this time that his court - appointed attorney, G. Jyles Eaves advised him to waive the preliminary hearing. According to the informant, Eaves did this "because some people wanted to 'take care' of Pilcher." That was foolish for Eaves to suggest because a preliminary hearing is a standard procedure, necessary for justice to be rendered. However, Brother Pilcher was forced to waive it allegedly in defense of his life. Meanwhile Mrs. Ola Pilcher, James' mother, was concerned about retaining lawyers for her son's defense. She was advised by Carroll County Sheriff, Lagrone E . Nunley not to get a "civil rights" lawyer to represent her son. But she didn't follow Nunley's advice and in June of 1971 she retained two Black attorneys, veteran Black attorney R. Jesse Brown and young Black attorney John Brittain. These two Black attorneys immediately asked that the case be removed from the local Carroll County Court to Federal Court in Greenville. The case was removed. But it was returned back to the Carroll County Circuit Court in the Fall of 1971. SUNDAY

According to our informant, the case was held on December 7, 1971. (It actually lasted until December 15, 1971.) Muhammad Speaks learned that prior to this hearing a series of motions had been filed by Pilcher's attorneys seeking to have the case removed to a higher court because: 1. His attorney felt that he couldn't get a fair trial in the town of Carrollton because everybody knew about the case. (There are just 9,000 people in the whole county and all of them knew about the case. It was common knowledge that almost all white folks assumed Pilcher was guilty.) 2. Pilcher had been indicted by an all white jury. 3. Pilcher and his family were

threatened by local white folks. 4. The presiding judge was a self-admitted racist. Marshall Perry, the Circuit Judge, is known as the Julius Hoffman of Mississippi, "The Hanging Judge." He ran for Governor in last year's election on a segregationist ticket. He is well known for his hatred of Blacks and civil rights (that is, honest) lawyers. PILCHER ON DEATH ROW After hearing all of this illegal and improper evidence against Brother Pilcher and staging a "mock trial," the all white jury found him guilty of murder and rape of Eugenia James and sentenced him to die by the gas chamber. (This was on December 15,1971.) Brother James Pilcher sits on Death Row at Parchman (the State Penitentiary) now the victim of white racism and oppression. ("Southern hospitality" for Blacks). He was convicted of murder and rape of a white woman based on a so - called oral confession. All evidence in the case shows that Pilcher did not commit the crime.

Zionists strive to block Jewish opposition to S.A. (Special to Mohammad Speaks)

JOHANNESBURG - The special favors accorded Zionist Jews in the South African Jewish community is possible only because they are willing to look the other way when it comes to speaking out against the terrible injustices Blacks face under the apartheid system as practiced by the ruthless South African regime. BY TAKING advantage of the racial inequalities in South Africa, some Jewish immigrants to the lush, fertile lands soon found their stature greatly improved financially and socially. At the end of World War I I , the Zionists of South Africa headed the wealthiest Jewish community in the world on a per capita basis. As one of the most cohesive groups in South Africa, they were extremely powerful since Ihey were able to exercise considerable influence because of their wealth and contributions to the ruling Nazi - oriented party. Some Jews were and are among the most progressive opponents of South African racism. And indifference to anti - Black ideology did not mount among Jews until the coming to power of Dr. John Vorster and Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd. Because of their Nazi educations, Verwoerd and

«8

Vorster gave the Israelis a scare at first. Many Zionists felt a Nationalist Party election victory meant antiJewish attitudes. Prior to the election there was often found in Jewish journals condemnation of apartheid. However, shortly after Dr. Verwoerd's party came into office, Jewish denunciation of South Africa's racist policies were curtailed dramatically. The Nationalist government needed complete solidarity among all unprincipled, moneyed whites to maintain minority rule.. To retain their own culture and identity and still be granted the special favors they had enjoyed in the past, such as monetary contributions to the budding state of Israel and the perpetuation of Zionism, the Zionists, after a special meeting between the government of South Africa and the South African Board of Deputies and the Zionist Foundation, changed their attitude on the race issue. The Nationalists and the Zionist element of South Africa suddenly had much in common. Many rabbis and the Board of Deputies officially declared that "apartheid is a political issue, instead of a moral issue" and therefore not a subject institutional Jewry should speak out against. The people of Israel base themselves upon the Old Testament to explain why they do not wish to mix with other people. The Afrikaaner doe's this too." Dr. Verwoerd observed that the "Jews took Israel from the Arabs after the Arabs lived there for a thousand years. In that I agree with them. Israel like South Africa, is an apartheid state." Today, Israel enjoys many special privileges because of the Zionist group's selfish motives. Tomorrow, as Africans increase opposition to imperialism, the Israelis may have to pay dearly for their Zionist leadership.
