National Black Political Convention (Special to Muhammad Speaks)
GARY, Ind. — A National Black Political Agenda, the working "structure" of a possible future Black political party, was the main tangible result of a three - day tumultous convention in this Midwestern steel mill city. DRAWING over 4,000 delegates and observers from throughout the United States, the convention was generally considered by some participants to be one more step in the direction of Black political independence from white America. But regardless of political persuasion, almost all agreed that Black citizens' interest in political power has developed into a vital force. The convention was led by such Black political notables

This attempt to deny the tremendous struggle of Blacks on a mass scale throughout our stay in the U.S. was called "an absurd attempt to cut Black youth off from their history and pretend that the
freedom movement began with the rise of these 'big brothers' to prominence," by a delegate from Alabama. The Agenda in general contains references to Blacks as a tribe and makes other suggestions reminiscent of the "Zionist" brand of nationalism. The Agenda speaks frequently about the diversity of Blacks and those who drafted the Agenda went to great lengths to present it as a general document. But its underlying assumptions and ideology may prove to be too narrow to base a strong party upon. Hopefully, the Assembly's leaders will broaden their Agenda if it proves unworkable, for there is much in it that testifies to Black people's need for "civil power."

"NO LONGER will Democrats take us for granted and Republicans write us off," the Agenda reads. And most Blacks would agree that if nothing more than this results from the Convention, this in itself would be an advance. The Agenda contains demands which reveal the savage extent of inequality between Blacks and whites in this country. It also makes realistic appraisals of the energy, money and discipline required to make political headway: "The oppressor would never knowingly subsidize his destruction or erode his power base... we can't expect to be political independents and then turn around and beg the white folks for money." Next WEEK, MORE OF THE Agenda and the Convention proceedings will be covered, and its effect on current political races will be measured.

Although the convention was marred by some predictable confusion and many mistakes by its organizers, it was able to. create a political structure, namely the National Black Assembly, a set of resolutions and a steering committee to meet and work on an agenda for Black political change. The delegates failed to endorse any candidate for President in 1972. Some of the criticisms made of the convention leaders involved the method of electing a chairman to convene the convention, the sometimes questionable process used to pass resolutions and the arbitrary changes in the

Blacks blast limitations on freedom of the press By Lonnie Kashif (M.S. Washington Bureau) WASHINGTON, D. C. - "The white mass media is racist to the core," was the general consensus of more than 15 witnesses who testified before the Congressional Black Caucus hearings held here on "The Mass Media and the Black Community." THE UNANIMITY of opinion was shared by the congressmen who complained about the press treatment of the hearings. Rep. William Clay (D-Mo.) charged that the local press only saw fit to print his statement labeling President Nixon "a racist" in its first report on the hearings.

Rep. Louis Stokes, chairman of the Black Caucus, agreed with the analysis, pointing out that pertinent comments of his own were placed in the sports sections of the paper. Congressman Ronald Dellums (D-Calif.) added his criticism. "They always portray me as a wild-eyed 'radical-militant,' " he said. The congressman's complaints followed a full week-end of similar accounts heard at a conference held at Howard University which brought together more than 350 Black journalists, broadcasters and communications experts from all over the country in discussion on Blacks in the various fields of communication.

Newsweek correspondent and Don Alexander, WCBS-TV in New York, described the pressures brought upon Blacks within the mass media who dared to present the news from a "true Black perspective." Tony Brown, the producer of the popular Black Journal TV program, acknowledged that "while I am the sole producer of the show, it has to go through the hands of 219 white people to determine if it gets to the Black people or not." ROBINSON CLAIMED, "Blacks can have influence in the system only to the point that we threaten i t . " This "threatening" can be as mild as suggesting that "myths and caricatures of Blacks be banned." He also implied that the increase of "ethnics" on the Sesame show was typical of the subtile attempt afoot the country to modify the "Black image," and subsequently foster hostility between minority groups, especially Blacks, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and Indians and Orientals. Pinderhughes, questioned by former EEOC Chief Clifford Alexander on the psychology of the TV comedy A l l In The Family, agreed that the purpose of the "humorous bigot" on the show was designed to condition people to
accept bigotry as "harmless human nature." Panel members and witnesses voiced agreement with the conclusion that there is a limit to what can be achieved for the uplift of Black people through the white media. In emphasizing this point, this reporter, accompanied by Joe Walker, Muhammad Speaks New York Editor, directed attention to Muhammad Speaks and works of Messenger Muhammad as the only proven alternative. Congressmen expressed concern that Muhammad Speaks, with a circulation of more than 500,000, has had to threaten legal action in acquiring proper and timely press credentials, from police groups, which should not even have the right to issue them, has often met with such things as harrassment of salesmen and other more subtle forms of enfringement upon press freedom. Among the recommendations by the Caucus was the formation of a task force to serve as a "watchdog" against racism in the media, the drafting of legislation to protect Black newsmen and support of a Black Federal Communications Commis sioner. The Rockefeller concern signed a contract for 50 million dollars to provide Indonesia with lubrication oil in spite of the fact that the country is richly endowed with oil. Indonesia has its own oil refineries. FORSAKEN AGRICULTURE In spite of this, and in spite of the fact that 70% of the population lives on agriculture, no investments have been made yet in the agricultural sector. Essential projects such as irrigation, fertilizing and equipment are set aside in favor of the interests of foreign capital. In order to fulfill the most elementary needs — food, clothing and the like — the Suharto regime increases its debts to those countries which are normally referred to as "donating" countries, primarily the U.S.A., Japan and Holland. The country as a whole borrowed $200 million in 1967, $350 million in 1968, and in 1969 the military regime
needed $500 million extra to balance the budget. The food problem is solved by buying surplus food from the U.S.A. (in 1967 the country purchased one million tons of rice for $140 million) instead of supporting development programs which could improve the country's own production of food. Neither is the clothing problem solved by support of the internal textile industry. Large quantities of Japanese textitles are imported, purchased with foreign credit. This has dealt the death blow to Indonesia's own small industries, which were spread throughout the country and which only needed new spare parts and raw materials to survive. These industries' capacities have been reduced by 80-90%, which has caused 500.000 unemployed in that branch and made many of them victims of the famine. Now the market is open for foreign investment and the Dutch textile firm, Koninklyke, has already begun production.

Whites make money By Joseph Deianey OXFORD, MISS. - A typical urban renewal plot will be undertaken by white folks in this small north Mississippi town. As a result of the activation of the Jackson Avenue urban renewal plan 134 Black families and 28 white families will be displaced; one white home owner and 1'3 Black home owners will lose their property. THE OXFORD Housing Authority (the urban renewal agency) started this sinister plan in 1967 with a series of meetings in the Black community. The purpose of these meetings was to sell the idea of "urban renewal" to the Black residents in the neighborhoods. According to them (OHA) they had a way to remove substandard housing in the area and improve the overall Black neighborhoods. According to OHA, one of the main reasons that they (OHA) made a housing and urban development (HUD) loan application for $2,891,976 was to "revitalize and improve the Jackson Avenue area in such a way that it could be maintained against blight and deterioration and to revitalize the project area as a physical and economic asset to the city of Oxford." But even though many Blacks support the idea of providing the poor better housing, they don't like it to be done more in the interests of white INDIVIDUAL FEDERAL INCOME

profiteers than in the interest of the community. However, the urban renewal plan won't be a physical and economic asset to the one white home owner and the 13 Black home owners who will lose their land as a result of this so-called urban renewal plan. These home owners are Black, and white, elderly retired people with incomes of less than $3,000 a year. Many of them are on social security and welfare. They are between the ages of 62 and 88 years of age. Many of these elderly Black folks have worked all of their lives to buy the houses that the local urban renewal agency have labeled "substandards." There is better land in other less heavily populated areas in and around Jackson that should have been selected for the housing project. But while they ignored the needs of the community the OHA made sure this urban renewal plot will be an "economic bonanza" for OHA, local banking institutions and white private developers. Muhammad Speaks learned that these profiteers will reap the following benefits at the expense of the poor, elderly Black land owners in the Jackson Avenue urban renewal area: (1) White private developers will build these so-called multifamily homes. These white private developers have a history of not hiring Black labor and charging high prices

Africa joining rest of world in isolating Israel and U.S. UNITED NATIONS African nations below the Sahara are increasingly concerning themselves with peace efforts in the Middle East. Cause for this concern is the continued occupation by Israeli armed forces of the Sinai Peninsula, the territory
of Egypt, an African state. BASING THEMSELVES on the November 22, 1967, Security Council resolution which rejects territorial expansion by military conquest, the African Heads of State attending last summer's meeting of the Organization of African Unity set up a special mission, headed by Senegal, to seek implementation of the UN resolution. The document's provisions include: no annexation, withdrawal of Israeli forces to lines held before June 5, 1967;
recognition of the Israeli stau. by other nations in the region, and a formal peace treaty to be negotiated among the contending parties. The OAU mission, with President Leopold Senghor at its head, met last fall with Israeli government leaders in Jerusalem and with Egyptian leaders in Cairo. But this is a suggestion Fletcher does not make. LIKE CERTAIN Black intellectuals, Fletcher deals only with a segment of the whole socio-economic picture. He purposefully avoids, for example, discussing the shortage of jobs across the board, for everybody (Ph.Ds in the sciences included). Some critics say this was also Fletcher's problem when he labored as assistant head of the Department of Labor, where he commanded into' existence such short-sighted, non-dimensional programs as the Philadelphia Plan, the Atlanta Plan, etc.

James Van DerZee
Photographer's work captures surface of 20th century history of Harlem NEW YORK - Since the early 1900's, James Van DerZee has created a photographic narrative of Harlem. His work is a chronicle of the people of that era: workers, leaders, children, socialites, ce lebrities. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he captured a positive image of Black life with the sensitivity of an artist and the skill of a fine craftsman.
First becoming interested in photography as a boy of twelve in Lenox Massachusetts, he answered an ad in the newspaper that offered a camera outfit to anyone who sold twenty packages of perfume at ten cents a piece. It was childhood hobby which Van DerZee enjoyed along with music and painting. Soon he became fascinated in capturing life by the pressing
of a button. His subjects were members of his family, classmates and townspeople whom he immortalized with his small box camera. He also pursued his musical interests. Music being his first love and with an entire family of musicians and artists, young James grew up to become an accomplished professional violinist and pianist performing at recitals, dances

Photo "coloreas" and those were for porters and elevator operators. Van DerZee applied for a position as a darkroom man at a New Jersey department store developing and printing for five dollars a week. His employer took a holiday and he had to do the photography work. Unlike his employer, he took pains in posing his subjects to get the best pictures he could. After the holidays Van DerZee returned to his darkroom work but clients asked for him and he began to do more photographic work in addition to his dark room duties — though his salary was never raised. But Van DerZee was happy for the experience and later, from his own studio on Lenox Avenue in Harlem, those earlier experiences became the basis for his life's work. Reginald McGhee "discovered" Brother Van DerZee when doing photographic research for the 1967 Harlem On My Mind exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. McGhee says of Van DerZee, " I t is my good

Muhammad Speaks BLACK MAN and Black woman, how long are you going to continue on this way hiding behind this false image of slavery and refusing to recognize The "Exceptional Leader" whom people the world over see and recognize as the Greatest Leader the world has ever known, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad? Even the civilized white men here in America wish he was their leader. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad is the only Black man in or out of America trying to uplift Black people. This makes him "Exceptional." When he was first teaching on Black is Beautiful, all other so - called Negro Leaders hated the word now everyone accepts it. This makes him "Exceptional." As a result of his teachings the Blackman's life assumes righteous direction and meaning so that each one receives the sense not only of being aimed at but aimed within a field of purpose. This makes him "Exceptional." Messenger Muhammad is the "Exceptional" Leader because his teaching is revealing the Blackman to be a people of Great Potentiality with increasing power, forerunners of a Great Nation 25 to 30 million strong. He teaches us to devote our time and energy to positive thinking, such as doing something for self and kind, also to develop products that will show profits and promise to our people, and not to be completely wrapped up in what other people are doing for themselves, hoping they will look over their shoulder and see us standing there with a beggar's look on our faces. Why is he "Exceptional" — because he refused to lie to us or anyone. Lying is an Integral Weakness of human character. All of our so-called - Negro leaders in the past and today have lied to us because they believe lying about something would increase a sense of importance among us, escape punishment and gain an end that would otherwise be denied us by white people. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad is "Exceptional" — because he stood up when all other socalled Negro Leaders buried their heads in a hole, tapped dance, softed shoe, did the splits and scratched their head for the white man to throw them scraps. When the words came from
Messenger Muhammad's mouth "Black man Do Something for self," these same Toms cried out! "What manner of man is this? No one ever talked like this before. Well, like I said, Brother that's why he is Exceptional! Again SCLC all started shaking with shock and became angry at the same time when Messenger Muhammad said; " T H E WHITE MAN IS THE DEVIL." Today they all bear witness what he said is true. Who but an Exceptional Leader would say this, be right and after forty years still be around to see it manifest? The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, our Dear Holy Apostle, is the only Blackman in or out of America trying to uplift Black people. This makes him '' Exceptional.'' Do some research and you will find no one else can claim this. Why? because behind everyone of these so-called Leading Negroes programs there is a personal gain of money and a selfish motive. I say this with sincere truth, because you, I , nor anyone Black or white can point to one thing anyone has done for the upliftment of Black People economically, socially, politically, spiritually or through other medias, but the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. A program he has perfected for 40 years, now record speaks for its self. No longer are we as followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad going to sit by and watch on TV, or in person, and listen to you on the radio or any other media of communication and allow you to sling mud at this most worthy cause, the uniting of the Righteous, by God's Divine Messenger. We are fed up with you socalled-Leading Negroes. What is wrong with you? Can't you see Muhammad speaks for us all? Step aside so he can clearly see and hit the target (he's going to hit it anyway). How can you sit in any panel show before the world and fix your mouth to say the Black man has no leader when the world knows, including the white world, that Messenger Muhammad is the Exceptional and accepted Leader among Black people today? No longer will you be able to fool Black People. The problem is, you want to lead us — where? Back to our enemy? The only impression you make today, is being a beggar lying at the white man's gate for the crumb's but there are no more crumbs left. You have tried everything else and it didn't work. The other week on the panel talk show everyone of your programs didn't work except the Exceptional Leader, who was not there in person for his job of leadership would not allow him to leave his post, why did yours? ON DECEMBER the 23,1961 in the Chicago New Crusader newspaper appeared an article written by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, as timely today as it was then years ago. Messenger Muhammad wrote, "AND THEY CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE SAYING," How long O Lord, -Holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth. THE ABOVE verse is a prophecy of the Lost and Found people of the Black Nation of Islam called "Negroes" by their enemies, the American white devils, who have persecuted and killed this people for the past 400 years. Some think this verse might refer to some of the Muslims who came here some years ago and are now in jails here in the U.S.A. Some of them have been held here in prison for 40 years, so Allah (God) told his Messenger. They also were persecuted for trying to teach our people here in America the true religion, Islam. "How long, O Lord", Messenger Muhammad wrote. It can be understood clearly in these words; "How long, O Lord, Holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge the blood
on them that dwell on the earth. The Earth is used here in this verse to distinguish between the place where the enemy devils and the place or country of the Muslims, called the Holy Land. Europe and America used to be called the wilderness or the home of the exile demons.
(Rev. 2-10) "Fear none of those things which thou shall suffer; behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried, and ye shall have tribulation ten (10) days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Messenger Muhammad wrote that the so-called Negroes are the only people who history shows have been beatened and jailed daily by another people for the past 400 years. The jails of America are now filled with the poor so-called Negroes mixed with the Muslims. Let's pause for a moment, surly we can bear witness with this ten (10) year old article of truth of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the last and greatest Messenger of Allah, our Leader and Teacher.
Messenger Muhammad wrote, "The so-called prisoners are fast becoming converts to Islam. This is Allah's (God) doings that the scriptures may be fulfilled wherein it says;" Which executes Judgement for the opressed, which give the food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners; (PS. 146:47, (Rev. 2:10) (Act. 12:17).
The prisons and jails are filled with followers and nonfollowers of Messenger Muhammad, and the devils (white race) are constantly trying to convict more Black people to long sentences in prison. Deceiving the poor Black people, making them to cause trouble, among themselves and kind, as his father thought him to do six (6,000) thousand years ago. There is a universal struggle being waged by the old world against the heginning of the new world. Will the old world's opposition prevent the establishment of the new world? According to recorded history the efforts being made by the old world against the beginning of a new world will fail, as did former opponents of Allah. A C C O R D I N G to the history of Noah, the people ridiculed the very thought of Allah bringing a flood to drown them. Noah was laughed at and scorned for preaching such a doctrine. According to the Bible and Holy Qur-an, he was called a
liar and looked upon as a crazy person. Some of the members of Noah's family joined the mockers and disbelievers of Allah and His Messenger who was Noah. They also met the same fate of the others who disbelieved. The opposition of that world to the advent of a better world was a total failure. So shall it be with those today who oppose the beginning of a new world of righteousness (Islam). In the time of Abraham and his nephew (Lot), before the birth of Ishmael and Isaac, Abraham's two sons, the people, mockers, and haters of truth and righteousness in that part of the world (the cities of Sodom and Gomorah) had become victimized by every imaginable evil. T H E Y E V E N threatened the life of the preacher of righteousness, Lot, disregarding the strangers (angels) visiting Lot, until it was too late. So it is with the opponents of the Messenger of Allah today in America. The wicked always believe they are mightier than Allah, and they make a supreme effort to thwart the plan and purpose of Allah to
bring about a better world. They always love to attack the Messenger to try to condemn him as a liar. Trying to prove the Messenger a liar means calling Allah a liar. The Holy Qur-an repeatedly prophesies a miserable, shameful and disgraceful defeat for the disbelievers and hypocrites in their campaign against the last Messenger of Allah whom Allah would raise in the time of the resurrection of the dead people. Messengers are never sent. They always are raised in the midst of those whom Allah would warn so they cannot claim that they did not understand the language of the Messenger - or say that he was a foreigner or stranger. The Messenger is one from them. It is a shame that the socalled Black leaders have waited so long to take heart and do as the Messenger of Allah (God) has done and is doing. The Rev. Joseph H. Jackson, and other so-called Black leaders must admit that no such thoughts entered their minds until the Divine Teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, opened their eyes.

Scholar shows how whites a r e mystified by words By Dr. Kamuti Kiteme (The author is a professor at City College of New York.) NEW YORK — Long before Europeans went to Africa, they talked about the "Dark Continent". We are told that it was like darkness because Europe knew very little about it. Later, the term "dark" was used to refer to the Black peoples of Africa. THEN STRANGE things began to happen. Europeans ignored African peoples' ethnic identies. Instead, we were collectively called Negroes (negroes?). As far back as 1443 (the date when Europeans terrorized friendly Africans and took the first cargo of slaves to Portugal — an event which was later

And to separate us into "different Black colors," colonial education taught us that "negro" only meant the very dark people in Central and Western Africa. The "lighter" ones in the North, East and Southern Africa were supposedly not actually negores; but "Bantus," " S e m i t e s , " "Hamites" and "Nilotes." The racist derivative of "negro" and therefore, "nigger" is just as ancient. Our research shows that it was first used all over Africa by Europeans (Portuguese) who when to trade in slaves; and to police and exploit their sphere of influence (a euphemism for colonies). (the man who hallucinated about a universal British Empire, beginning with the conquest of the entire Continent of Africa) once declared: " I prefer land to niggers."
The most innocent of all the words that Europeans corrupted was (and still is) "native." To get it from the horse's mouth, Webster (U.S.A) defines native as "...belonging to a particular place by birth..." Chambers (British) tells us that it is innate..." However, European customary usage has given this word other meanings and implications. The distortion is so thorough that "native" now means something like "a childish, naked savage." Hence, when Europeans talk of the "natives" in Africa, New Guinea and the Amazon, they mean a quite different thing from the "natives" in Scandinavia, the U.S. or Britain. By the same token, Europeans born and brought up in Africa never call themselves "natives" of Africa. The term is exclusively used to refer to Aricans. The same "savage" meaning of "native" was widely publicized in European news

Some had I incontrollable outbursts,, yelling that the speaker was; being rude because there were: no "natives" in those areas! Other terms misused by Europeans are "tribe" and "tribesmen." J.S. Mbiti, one of African's leading scholars, emphatically suggest in his book, African Religions and Philosophies, that "tribe " has been so abused that African peoples should abandon it and instead, use African "ethnic groups" or societies; or else use the African names such as the Yoruba or the Zulu peoples.

Jr.. has recently bean appointed chairman of a new Department of African American studies at Northwestern University, after receiving unanimous endorsement by a student faculty search committee. BENNET who has authored seven books including several historical works, called the appointment a "great challenge." The newly created department will eventually include at least eight faculty members, according to officials. Having taught at Northwestern as a visiting professor in history during 1968 69, the Ebony editor stated that he hopes to develop a program that "will give new meaning and new thrust to the whole concept of Black Studies." He is to assume the position of professor of African Studies in September.

ON FEBRUARY 15, 1972, an all white jury found me guilty before a white Judge of armed robbery and murder. At the passionate pleading of Black prosecutor, Blanche Manning, the jury has recommended the death penalty. Judge Frank Wilson has set March 6th for sentencing. I'm a weekly reader of Muhammad Speaks and have the utmost respect for Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his teachings. I'm so sorry I was not aware of the fruits of hisjeachings years earlier. I am enclosing a copy of a letter I'm addressing to Judge Wilson. Please feel free to use it as you see fit. DEAR JUDGE WILSON: On Tuesday, February 15, 1972, I was found guilty in the above cause. The Jury has recommended the death penalty. In passing sentence I am sure you are primarily motivated by what the State witnesses had to say about the crime. To you the whole affair probably seems mad. You cannot understand what happened oh why it happened so I am sure you cannot understand me. For better or worse, I am a State raised child. I have seen little of what you would term the "free" world since I was ten. I've been through what you call rehabilitation. In essence, I am the result. IT IS Barbee's contention that the only way to solve the problems of America's penal institutions is to "abolish prisons all together and not keep anything in their place." Given to practicing what he preaches, the Wisconsin legislator introduced a bill in the Wisconsin state legislature in October, 1971 to prohibit the use of imprisonment as punishment and requiring the sale of state prisons. The bill prohibits the state or any of its political subdivisions from imprisoning anyone for the violation of a statute unless his record, as viewed by the sentencing judge, indicates that there is an imminent danger of substantial physical harm to himself or others if he were released on probation. Individuals sentenced to confinement may be confined only in institutions providing eduational opportunities, psychiatric treatment and occupational therapy, and must receive prevailing wage rates for services rendered during confinement. Barbee said the high costs of maintaining prisons makes it virtually impossible for many states to furnish some of the barest necessities of life of many poor citizens of the state. This lack of money where it's most needed can also be seen in the budget allocated for prison rehabilitation of the prison inmates. Only five cents of every dollar is spent for rehabilitation and crime reduction while ninety five cents is spent on custody. Spending tax money in such a foolish manner, Barbee argued, creates an undue burden on the taxpayer. Taxpayers won't be so willing to foot the bill to maintain structures that political appointees, masochistic wardens and guards misuse, Barbee predicted once the taxpayer learns he can save money and improve penal policy at the same time. Questioned about the possibility of a gang of bank robbers being quite successful in making a lot of money under a no - prison system and asked what would be done with such criminals, Barbee exclaimed, "Stop encouraging people to hoard money in banks. When you (banks) make yourself so conspicuous, bragging about how many depositors you have, you're asking people who don't have anything to take it away from you, and this is what they should do." AS FOR people who are committing crimes, Barbee said, they "should have some way to learn a job that is going to be productive not only to society but to themselves — but not in a prison system." Commenting on the whole idea of prison reform, Barbee stated, " I f , as we claim, the goal of our prisons is rehabilitation, then we must begin to rehabilitate. Whites literally bleeding Haitians to death PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti The scandalous and depraved traffic in Haitian blood in the United States conducted by the US-owned firm "Hemo Caribbean" recently came up for discussion before Congress. Based on disclosures in the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times forty - six Congressmen have demanded passage of a bill controlling such imports. Cincinnati hospital recalling 500 exposed to tuberculosis CINCINNATI - Because of exposure to a tubercular nurse's aid who worked in the hospital where they were born between December and February, over 500 babies have been "recalled" for tuberculosis tests. THE TUBERCULAR condition of the Cincinatti General Hospital nurse's aid was discovered last month when a routine tuberculin skin test yielded positive results. The aid was immediately relieved from her duties after the positive skin test although it was later in the month when her illness was positively diagnosed. How missionaries prepare path for white militarists and merchants By NACLA
New York — What does the word missionary mean to you? Their carefully cultivated public image is of dedicated men and women who forfeit a "norman life" in the United States to spend years in "primitive" surroundings throughout the world — spreading their religion while helping those "less fortunate than ourselves." Innocent well meaning if ol-fashioned people just doing their thing. That is the image books, movies and the media paint of them.
BUT THE facts prove otherwise. Today there are nearly 50,000 North American Christian missionaries scattered over the globe who play a key part in the US.' ability to "pacify" the people of a particular area while the wealth and resources in the area are extracted by powerful economic interests. Though not all missionaries have participated directly in this "pacification," the Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., the second largest Protestant missionary sending agency, has been deeply involved in "occdpuing
primitive tribes" in a way which they claim softens the shock of the inevitable integration of these "savages" (that's how they say it!) into modern society. Wycliffe, also known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics, Inc. (WBT/SIL) maintains 2500 men and women in some 23 countries and is unique among missionary organizations. Their work is supported by host governments in the 23 countries, by private donations in the US and by grants from the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare and the US Agency for International Development (US-AID). USAID is one of the chief institutions which the United States has for promoting its interests abroad in the name of "development." Here are some examples of Wycliffe's work: In Viet Nam the Summer Institute of Linguistics has since 1957, received money from US-AID to do linguistic's work among twelve tribes of Montagnards. These people live in the country's central highlands, a region which is crucial in the Viet Nam War. CIA AND Green Berets efforts to reduce traditional Montagnard hostility towards the lowland Vietnamese in the south who control them have been helped along by the SIL who broke the language barrier for them. In 1962 the Summer Institute of Linguistics signed an agreement with the government of Colombia which, among other things, committed the organization to put the air transport and radio services of its subsidiary, the Jungle Aviation and Radio Service (JAARS) at the disposal of government of officials In 1970 SIL did in fact, provide air and radio support as well as (Continued on page 26)

Mother of victim fails to get gunds raised by 'sympathetic Blacks
White k i l l e r s of Jo Etha Collier freed of charges By Nathaniel 10X DREW, Miss. — Less than one year after Jo Etha Collier was murdered, two of the white men charged with killing her have been set free because of "lack of evidence" and the third man is free on bond. The bereaved mother has not received much of the funds raised as a memorial to Miss Collier and the where abouts of financial records are unknown. THE SLAYING of the young Black woman in the spring of 1971 soon known throughout the United States because of the blatant manner in which she was murdered. Although the killing of Miss Collier was widely publicized, the freeing of Parks and Wilkerson has received very little publicity. It was a nightime killing. A car carrying three men was parked in the Black community of this small Mississippi Delta town as Jo Etha and her friends and classmates headed down Union Street after graduation exercises at a local high school. The shooting of Miss Collier was accurate, she died quickly. The car carrying the three white men * hurried from the scene. However, they were later apprehended. Mrs. Gussie Love, the dead woman's mother, did not even attend the trial. Somewhat intimidated by a letter she received that told her it was not necessary for her to go to the trial, Mrs. Love still remains in the dark as to what has transpired here. "THEY TOLD ME that I didn't need to go to the trial,"
Mrs. Love told Muhammad Speaks. "They said that they had people to take care of things like that — the FBI and everything. "Some people say I should have gone anyway., sometimes now I wish I had gone.." Freeing of Wayne Parks, Wesley Parks and Allen Wilkerson is seen by Blacks here as a tragic replay of an old Mississippi story. The murderers of Max Parker went unpunished, Medgar Ever's killers (Byron De Le Beckwith) ran for the governor of Mississippi mainly on the strength of the famous killing. When Rainey Pool was beaten to death on the streets of Louise and countless other Blacks not only in Mississippi but through the United States — sometimes white killers were arrested but few have been punished. "Seems like we are not going to get any justice in this country," said Mrs. Mae Bertha Carter of Drew.
"Something needs to be done. The big boys don't like it — they still don't like, " Jo Etha's mother says of her oldest sons. "Robert Lewis (the second son) goes down to Dews sometimes...he always goes to that spot (the place where Jo Etha was murdered) — he doesn't like it. He wants to do something about i t , " Mrs. Love says. " I try to talk to them — try to keep them out of trouble — I don't know... But I know I never will forget i t . . . I never will get over i t , " shesaid. Jo Etha was her only daughter and because of her age it is not likely that she will have another daughter. Although Mississippi whites are mainly responsible for the predicament of the Love family, some Blacks have added a foul note to the family's grief. Fund raising attempts were (Continued on page 27)

Interdenominational' center in Atlanta fears righteousness of Nation of Islam By Ogene Davis (Chaplain, Clark College) ATLANTA, G A - The Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, Georgia, the only Black recognized seminary in America, produces nearly three fourths of all Black seminarians in this country for ministerial vocations. IN A very recent display of power and poor judgment, ITC has made a concrete showing of its disregard and disrespect for the hopes and needs for Black people. This interdenominatiol structure had been called the "single successful interdenominational attempt in the U.S. among Blacks or whites."
ITC is a good example of why this diabolical contradiction is rampant. Since ITC produces most of the church's trained leaders, let us question the nature of its production plant. ITC is a "Black" school whose policies are decided by white people. Whites decide what accreditation standards will be following the pattern of white schools. Whites control the purse strings of ITC through foundations and whitecontrolled denominations, specifically Gammon Theological Seminary which is United Methodist. Thus the ITC though it is Black in color, is a neocolonist institution whose paramount purpose is to Black people attend all eight service the need of the white of the represented churches, controller even if it means participating in the ITC, exploiting the minds and across the country.
