METER MECHANIC REPRESENTS IBEW LOCAL 1521 AT BLUE COLLAR BOXING The Thanksgiving holiday started with a battle inside Baxter Arena. The inaugural Blue Collar Boxing event featured 10 bouts across different weight classes. The card included Industrial Gas Meter Mechanic Dustin Hiner, representing IBEW Local 1521. The setup at Baxter was just across the road from the District’s Construction Center where Dustin has

worked for the last five years.

Leading up to fight night, Dustin put four months of strenuous workouts in at the gym, often meeting with Safety Specialist Dan Murphy, a former professional boxer and the 1992 World Cruiserweight Champion who logged 70 career fights.

Unfortunately for Dustin, his hard work ahead of his match was

quickly dashed. It didn’t come in the form of a knockout or decision, but rather his shoulder that became dislocated early in the first round. Despite the shortlived fight, Dustin says his hard work paid off, not only proving he could step into the ring, but also helping families across the metro. “The atmosphere was amazing that night,” said Dustin.

Proceeds from Blue Collar Boxing were donated to United Way of the Midlands and the Nebraska Center for Workforce Development and Education.

Organizers hope this will become an annual event. Blue Collar Boxing is already on the books for November 25. You can learn more at bluecollarboxing.org.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE AT FLORENCE WATER PLANT September 2019 saw the start of another large project at the Florence Water Treatment Plant. The rehabilitation of the 22-million-gallon settling basin was the focal point of phase three in the sweeping capital improvements agenda.

It’s the latest massive facelift for the District’s oldest facility that holds the initial water taken from the Missouri River.

Ultimately Basin 1 was drained with every square inch rinsed, power-washed and inspected. Over the next three months the $2.7 million project addressed several key areas, including process and safety improvements, as well as increasing the overall structural integrity.

Contractors from McGill Restoration and Hawkins Construction added new ladder access for the basin, enhanced chemical feeds and re-piped the control lines for the drain valves, making them more accessible and eliminating the need to go into a confined space. “We’ve made dramatic changes that make a very big impact to enhance our employee safety,” said Mike Koenig, director, Water Production and Pumping.

With safety improvements also came structural enhancements and the need to fix aging areas that had started to degrade.

“The concrete had lasted more than 125

years, but it won’t last forever. We noted some areas that had become weaker and could have eventually failed if we didn’t make these improvements,” said Mike.

McGill enlisted a subcontractor that used robotic technology to help remove the deteriorating concrete in the basin. Using water jets pressurized up to 19,000 poundsper-square-inch, the remote-controlled unit meticulously traversed the sidewalls around the entire basin to break apart the old concrete. The hydro-demolition process left behind a rough hardscape that was then paired with a layer of wire mesh.

That was followed by a parade of nearly

80 truckloads of concrete that was shot in from above, sprayed and smoothed out.

While the Basin 1 rehab was happening, the overhaul on the Chemical Building on the south end of the plant continued. The nearly two-year, $25 million renovation was starting to take shape, getting rid of obsolete equipment from the 1950s and improving overall safety and efficiency.

Aside from cosmetic changes, more process and safety improvements are now being utilized throughout the building.

The new lime system lets staff treat the water the same way they have but with less lime usage. The upgraded system also separates impurities mechanically, no longer needing someone to physically remove them, limiting the risk of injury.

The revamped area created new administrative offices and lab space with a drop zone that allows field technicians to easily drop off water samples. A modern HVAC system was added for better

ultimately the products and processes that are being upgraded help the District look even further into the future. “We don’t look at 10 to 15 years. We look at things that can last 25 to 50 years.�

Staff were scheduled to move in during early January.

Phase three of the Florence capital improvements are slated to end in 2020. Phase four is projected to run from 2021-2025. The most significant project outlined is the piping and valve replacement between the finished water reservoir and the Minne Lusa Pump Station.

That is estimated to take two years.

SUPERVISOR TRAINING IN ACCOUNTABILITY AND RECOGNITION TECHNIQUES (S.T.A.R.T.) Managers, supervisors and vice-presidents from different areas across the District met in November. The gathering of leadership inside a classroom at the Construction Center could be viewed as casual at first glance – a roundtable discussion of sorts with people speaking freely – but the subject matter was serious. The point was to stress SAFETY. An entire day was set aside to focus on making sure that safety is at the forefront of each department across the District.

During this meeting, the focus on safety was being reinforced using the S.T.A.R.T. program (Supervisor Training in Accountability and Recognition Techniques). The curriculum was cultivated and executed in a classroom setting with the Caterpillar company. Straight from the S.T.A.R.T. website, it was meant to “provide managers and supervisors skills to affect safety perceptions and behaviors throughout your organization.”

Geared toward accountability, an improved 6

safety culture is the byproduct of all parties buying in to safety. “As a pre-condition to everything we do, we must commit to no injuries, no accidents, no incidents as a District. It’s not merely a goal,” said Steve Ausdemore, senior vice-president, Safety, Security & Field Operations. “It’s never okay for someone to get hurt. All employers have the duty and the responsibility to provide a safe work environment.”

For the group of more than two dozen leaders, it was an open forum including a discussion with President Mark Doyle to brainstorm how safety can be improved even more and how communication can benefit the process from the bottom up. Mark said, “I really believe the way we’re treated is directly related to the way we operate.”

Chris Walter, field foreman, Meter Reading, was one of the participants and says the training hits home in a very real way. “The instructor spoke about her own father’s

death on the job at a construction site and it was very emotional. The realization that any injury, no matter how small, has an impact beyond the bottom line at work.”

M.U.D. is budgeting for Caterpillar to conduct three additional S.T.A.R.T. classes throughout 2020 so more supervisors can participate. The eventual goal according to Safety Manager Shane Docken is to get all frontline supervisors through the specialized training over the next three years.

Shane said the class is another way the District can give the tools necessary to each employee to effectively do their jobs and go home safely at the end of every shift. “When you look at Caterpillar and the background that the company has, it’s a practical application for us. We’re exposed to these risks and hazards daily, so the program is really in tune with our goal to have zero injuries and accidents, said Shane.

UNITED WAY DRIVE RAISES $107,327 What do the lingering smell of maple syrup and a pallet full of diapers have in common?

They were both the result of another successful District United Way Drive.

This year’s drive kicked off with The Pancake Man serving up ‘cakes in the Downtown lobby and Construction Center garage. Then, Nothing Bundt Cakes set up shop at the Operations Center and 20 percent of cake sales were donated to the fundraising effort.

District employees donated more than 4,500 diapers.

All in all, employees and retirees raised more than $107,300 for the United Way of the Midlands from cake sales and pledge cards, which will support programs that serve thousands of individuals and families in the Omaha-metro area.

Finally, more than 4,500 diapers were donated by employees throughout the month of October for the Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

Geneva Patterson, manager, Rates, who served as chair for the campaign, said, “I’m really grateful for the great group of employees we had on our committee this year. We had a lot of fun raising money for United Way.” Committee members included:

PEAKSHAVING FACILITIES PROVIDE BACKUP FOR WINTER GAS USE, SAVE CUSTOMERS $6 MILLION ANNUALLY The large blue tank on the northeast corner of 120th and Fort Streets may seem insignificant to many. In fact, most Omaha residents likely don’t know it’s there or its purpose.

firm, but with pipelines,” Ron said. “They transport the gas we purchase to the exchange points where we take custody of the gas.” This exchange of custody occurs at the LNG Plant.

Ron Mikulicz was one of those residents. “I worked in Construction when I started at M.U.D. For one project I was told to go to LNG to dig a trench. My first question was, ‘Where is that?’”

When temperatures are significantly colder than anticipated, gas usage goes up. Ron said, “We tell Northern what we’re planning to buy, but the weather could change one way or the other. If we need more gas, we have two choices – we can purchase additional supplies from the market or we can start utilizing the gas from our LNG Plant.” The District faces large penalties if we use more gas from the pipeline than authorized for the day.

Now working as the Gas Production instrument and training foreman, Ron knows first-hand how integral “the blue tank” is to the District’s operations.

Each fall, employees at the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant ensure the tank is filled with liquid natural gas in preparation for winter. Gas from the tank is used when the District is unable to buy gas off the pipeline or if it’s too expensive to buy.

The LNG Plant can run as much as 20 to 30 days during a cold winter, providing substantial gas price insurance against price spikes on peak use days.

Dave Bellairs, director, energy acquisitions, Gas Operations, is responsible for purchasing the District’s gas for the following day.

Ron said, “We have to reserve pipeline space every day from Northern Natural Gas. We are literally buying gas today for tomorrow.”

A series of large pipelines lay underground to transport gas throughout the country. The lines run up from the south, and out from the west. “Think of Northern Natural Gas as a trucking 8

The LNG Plant is home to three facilities – the liquefaction plant (tank), propane air plant and town border station. “Without the facilities at our plant, we would have to pay for more space on the pipeline to meet our peak day needs,” Ron said.

The District also owns and operates a propane air facility at 61st and Grover, next to the Operations Center.

From 2014-2019, the three peakshaving facilities provided a net savings to our customers of $60 million in gas prices and firm transportation demand charges. This includes $35 million in operating and maintenance expenses and $12 million in capital projects at the facilities over the last six years.

Teresa Crosgrove, collection service representative, Field Services, plans to retire April 3 with 33 years of service. Teresa joined the District in 1987 as a cashier, Credit Services. She was promoted to cashier II in 1989 before advancing to administrative clerk II, Customer Service, in 1991. She became customer service clerk I in 1991 and was promoted to meter reader, Meter Reading, in 1993. In 1995, Teresa was named customer service clerk I, Customer Service, before becoming customer service clerk II in 1998 and customer service clerk III in 2001. Teresa was promoted to collection service representative, Meter Reading, in 2005 before transferring to the same position in Field Services in 2015.

Kim Polen, collection service representative, Field Services, plans to retire April 3 with 32 years of service. Kim joined the District in 1985 as a customer service clerk, Credit Services.

She was named customer representative in 1988 and customer service clerk II in 1990. Kim was promoted to customer service instructor in 1994. She was named customer service clerk I in 2001 and advanced to customer service clerk II later that year. In 2010, Kim became communications clerk II, Dispatch Office. She was promoted to collection service representative, Meter Reading, in 2013 and transferred to Field Services in 2015.

Matt was named building engineer in 1982 and building operator in 1997.

Prior to joining the District, Matt worked in various jobs, including as a finish carpenter, packing house worker, ready mix concrete driver, roofer and physical therapist assistant.

He was a volunteer fire fighter for 17 years.

April Straughn, water plant engineer, Water Pumping, retired September 26 with 17 years of service. April joined the District as a customer service clerk I, Customer Service, in 2001. She was promoted to customer service clerk II in 2005. April transferred to Water Pumping in 2006 as a water plant operator trainee. She advanced to water plant operator in 2007 and served as administrative clerk II in 2009. In 2010, April was named water plant operator trainee. She was promoted to water plant operator in 2011, water laboratory technician, Water Quality, in 2012 and water plant engineer, Water Pumping, in 2019.

Tom Vacek, foreman, quality assurance utility locating, Safety and Security, retired December 28 with 40 years of service. Tom joined the District in 1979 as a special laborer, Construction. He was promoted to pipe layer II in 1981 and machine operator in 1984. He transferred to Plant Engineering as a utility locator in 1989. Tom was named senior utility locator in 2015 and foreman, quality assurance utility locating, Safety and Security, in 2019.

Bob Wozny, senior engineering techniciandesign, Engineering Design, retired December 31 with 29 years of service. Bob joined the District in 1990 as a drafting technician trainee, Engineering Design. He advanced to drafting technician in 1992. In 1993, he was promoted to utility locator, Plant Engineering, before advancing to field engineer II in 1997, senior engineering technicianoperations in 1999 and senior engineering technician-design, Engineering Design, in 2009.

Prior to joining the District, Bob worked for General Bank Equipment, Arcadia Refinery and Metro Engineers. He attended Metropolitan Community College. In retirement, Bob plans to work on home projects and spend more time with family and friends. He enjoys riding motorcycles, golfing and antiquing. He and his wife, Nicole Lesko, have two sons.

JAMES BOLITA

James Bolita, 81, died November 10, 2019. He was a senior customer service technician, Field Services, when he retired in 1998 with 36 years of service. Jim joined the District in 1962 as a laborer, Construction. He was promoted to meter reader, Meter Reading, the following year, worked as a meter mechanic, Measurement, and transferred to Field Services in 1969.

He advanced to senior customer service technician in 1994. He served as president of the Employee Speakers Bureau in 1983.

Cynthia “Cindi” Hendricks, 62, died October 21, 2019. She was an accounting clerk II, Accounting, when she joined the District in 1998. She retired from LTD in 2015.

Emma Burnley, 74,died November 18, 2019.

She was an information systems clerk III, Information Technology, when she retired in 2001 with 25 years of service. Emma joined the District in 1975 as a data entry operator, and worked as verifying operator and audit order clerk before being promoted to chief clerk, data entry. She was named information systems clerk III in 1984.

EVERETT LIVELY Robert Carsten, 81, died December 24, 2019.

He was training foreman, Gas Production, when he retired in 1999 with 26 years of service.

Bob, a U.S. Army veteran, joined the District in 1972 as operator I, Gas Production. He also worked as stationary engineer in both Gas Production and the Platte South Plant. He was promoted to senior gas plant maintenance mechanic, Gas Production, in 1983, operating foreman in 1992 and training foreman in 1998.

Daniel G. Crouchley, 69, died December 7. He was senior vice-president and general counsel to the president, President’s Office, when he retired in 2012 with 29 years of service. Dan joined the District in 1983 as an attorney, Law Department, advancing to assistant general counsel in 1993 and to general counsel in 2001.

He was promoted to senior vice-president and general counsel, President’s Office, in 2010 and named senior vice-president and general counsel to the president in 2011.

Everett “Jack” Lively, 93, died October 29, 2019. He was an operator instructor, Human Resources, when he retired in 1989 with 41 years of service. An Army veteran, Jack joined the District in 1947 as a laborer, Water Distribution. He transferred to pipe layer, Construction, in 1949, advancing to machine operator, crew foreman and gang foreman. He was promoted to construction foreman in 1965 and to operator instructor, Human Resources, in 1988.

Yvonne McGarry, 78, died November 23, 2019.

She was director, training and development, Human Resources, when she retired in 2002 with 27 years of service. Yvonne joined the District in 1974 as a water analyst, Water Quality, advancing to assistant chemist in 1975. She was promoted to employment and activities director, Human Resources, in 1980, and to director, training and development, in 1982.

Dorrel Nutter, 80, died October 31, 2019.

He was a senior buyer, Purchasing, when he retired in 1997 with 36 years of service. A U.S. Army veteran, Dorrel joined the District in 1961 as a meter reader, Meter Reading, and joined Engineering the following year. He was named buyer, Purchasing, in 1969 and was promoted to senior buyer in 1976. He was placed on long-term disability in 1996.

Howard Thompson, 85, died November 30, 2019. He was a water plant operator, Water Pumping, when he retired in 2000 with 12 years of service. HOWARD THOMPSON Willie Thompson, 65, died October 13, 2019.

He was a group leader, Construction, when he retired in 2014 with 33 years of service. Willie joined the District in 1980 as a special laborer, Construction. He was named meter reader, Meter Reading, in 1982. He became a pipe layer II, Construction, in 1983 before advancing to machine operator in 1985, utility worker in 1997, crew leader in 2002 and group leader in 2005.
