Community Leader

Michael Gadingura Yunupingu is a Special Project Officer at Marngarr Aboriginal Corporation and is responsible for managing the Youth centre in Gunyangara. Three days a week Michael co-ordinates various activity for youth on the oval, basketball courts and at the youth centre. Michael also updates community events, maintains the Gunyangara news Facebook page, manages people in the community that work with him, as well as co-ordinates five other staff. It has been a difficult year all round and youth engagement is always a challenge even for after-school activities. However, with Michaels leadership,

determination, commitment and overall enthusiasm, school attendance has increased, and the centre has been a great space for youth to engage in activities. The youth centre has been incredibly lucky recently with donations such as new couches and a pool table. Michael is also collaborating with mental health workers and psychologists who volunteer their time.

Michael is committed and will continue to keep promoting education, culture, health & wellbeing in his community in hope that it will bring everyone together in Gunyangara.
