2019 Annual Report Jennings A. Jones College of Business

Jones College achieved important milestones in 2018–19. Three top 40 or better national rankings—for the M.S. in Finance, Supply Chain Management concentration in the M.S. in Management, and Business Intelligence and Analytics concentration in the M.S. in Information Systems—brought our total number of such recognitions to nine in the past three years. We launched two degree programs and two concentrations in existing degrees in response to needs identified in the business community. We started the Political Economy Research Institute; hired its director, faculty, and staff; and hosted a scholar-in-residence day with Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Arthur Laffer. We hired faculty and staff to enhance every academic department.

We topped the $1 million annual fundraising mark. Students, faculty, and alumni received local, regional, national, and international recognition for achievements, providing more evidence that our efforts toward “national prominence and regional dominance” are paying huge dividends!

Over 3,000 students have received Dale Carnegie® training in human relations, communication, and other soft skills since 2015. This initiative is still unique among major collegiate business schools, and the effect on our students has been transformational. Our Business and Economic Research Center and MTSU Lead Center of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center network are making significant contributions to the economic development of the greater Nashville region.

On a personal note, I have served as dean for six years, the average length of service for AACSB-accredited business school deans. I remain excited about the prospects for Jones College, and I am still proud to lead the effort toward continuous quality improvement. Go Blue Raiders!

Tennessee Society of CPAs. MTSU received a greater number of scholarships (22) and more scholarship dollars ($79,400) than any other university in the state. Ashley Nipper and Areez Sadiki each received $25,000 King Foundation scholarships, which provide support over a three-year period. Blake Hise (’18), enrolled in the Master of Accountancy program, received the TSCPA Nashville Chapter award for $2,500. Natalie Massengale received the $2,500 King Award, based on leadership characteristics, academic achievement, and financial need.

Cheryl Summers received the Bernie Goldstein Award as an outstanding nontraditional student. Others receiving awards, typically $1,500, were Molly Bell, Shaina Brown, Jonathan Chandler, Bradley Cunningham, Courtney Ellis, Shelby Follis, Alexia Grogan, Shelby Hurt, Gina Nguyen, Caroline Pankey, Dennielle Pineda, Ashley Shank, Charish Short, Michael Talbert, Rontae Weaver, Samantha Sweat, and Michelle Whitson.

Public Accounting Company Oversight Board. Farouk Hassan won a $10,000 scholarship.

Beta Gamma Sigma. Michael Cureton was awarded a scholarship to attend the Global Leadership Summit in Chicago. His team placed first among 40 teams in conference case competition.

Beta Alpha Psi. Kim Honaker and six student officers attended the Beta Alpha Psi Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Samantha Sweat was among an elite group of 72 students from across the globe selected to participate in Project Run With It, a competition event benefiting nonprofit organizations in the D.C. area.

Nashville Technology Council Analytics Summit. Beta Alpha Psi Regional Meeting. Four students presented their abstract in the Deloitte Best Practices competition.

TVA Investment Challenge National Conference. The MTSU team’s well diversified $500,000 USD stock portfolio returned strongly with a 20% gain as of July, beating the S&P 500 total return index by 0.36%.

Virtual Enterprise International. Maria King judged the National Elevator Pitch Competition; Vince Smith judged the Regional Competitive Events.

CFA Research Challenge. Finance majors Cody Bottoms, Jeremiah Daniels, Andrew Murdock, and Mason Smith, under the guidance of adviser Kevin Zhao, analyzed Pinnacle Financial Partners and presented their stock recommendation to judges from the CFA Society of Nashville.

American Marketing Association. In elevator/professional brand statement competition at Trevecca Nazarene University, all four participating Jones College students placed in the top 12. Kaylee Knapp tied for first place.

Personal Selling Event. Twenty companies participated in fall and spring.

HCA Professional Development and Ethics Competition. Graduate students in Sandy Benson’s Corporate Governance, Risk Management, and Fraud class participated.
