Back in 1990 when I moved here the food scene was scarce. There were a few notable places available for Fine Dining but beyond that not much. This past year the MICHELIN GUIDE arrived in Colorado and our state couldn’t be prouder. Michelin published its first North American Guide in 2005 for New York. Michelin Guides now cover the Food and Beverage industry in Washington D.C, Chicago, California, Miami/Orlando/Tampa – Florida, Colorado, Toronto, and Vancouver. We are one of the sixth in the United States to have obtained that honor.

Comprising over 12,400 eating and drinking establishments, the hospitality industry is vital to Colorado’s economic health and prosperity. With the pandemic came the loss of diners and staff. Independently owned and operated businesses account for 69% of Colorado’s restaurants, making them an integral part of the local culture. Restaurants are a driving force in our mountain town communities and are sought out as part of the mountain town experience.

Bosq in Aspen earned One-MICHELINStar honor and is a nod to how exceptional the food scene is now. Colorado received 30 MICHELIN Recommended restaurants. Eight of those restaurants are found in our mountain town communities and are listed below: Element 47 (Aspen) Mawa’s Kitchen (Aspen) Mirabelle (Beaver Creek) Osaki’s (Vail) Prospect (Aspen) Splendido at the Chateau (Beaver Creek) Sweet Basil (Vail) Wyld (Beaver Creek) You can find some outstanding meals in our mountain towns and this issue is a nod to those working hard preparing, cooking, and serving up great food to fuel and refuel all of our adventures.

We have many other great stories about entrepreneurs, businesses, and cool places to visit. Parker the Snow Dog even wrote a story about his hometown, Georgetown.

Love beautiful views? We are enamored with the Dark Sky initiative that has been gaining momentum. The heavens above us are so spectacular at night. CUCHARA MOUNTAIN PARK Cuchara Mountain Park is like none other. They are a community-based, nonprofit-operated outdoor recreation area created through grassroots efforts to renew a special area left abandoned outside of LaVeta by the former ski area managers who stopped operations in 2000. This ski area once served 230 skiable acres using 4 chairlifts and a surface lift.

Today, you may hike or skin any Cuchara Mountain Park ski trails. The park also provides access to National Forest land for Alpine Touring. All users must agree to an uphill policy and follow various rules.

Starting in late December- early January, they plan to start running a ski bus, a sled made out of old school bus seats welded to a car-hauling trailer pulled by a snowcat on weekends through the Spring. For just $200 Huerfano County Residents and Non-Residents can ride the ski bus all winter long. This sounds like serious fun and a throwback to what many consider the good old days.

WINTER PARK RESORT WORKFORCE HOUSING Residents of Winter Park Resort’s much-anticipated workforce housing complex, Conifer Commons, have started to move in. They are the first employees to live in this local housing project, hailed by industry professionals and community leaders as “a national model for other ski resorts.”

Recognizing the crisis-level need for local housing for seasonal and yearround workers, Winter Park Resort completed construction of Conifer Commons in December of 2023. From inception to completion, Conifer Commons has been applauded for its community-wide approach, and Winter Park Resort has quickly become a leader in addressing employee housing. The project is noted for working collaboratively with key partners; aligning with the Town of Winter Park’s housing-needs assessment and strategy; moving quickly with modular construction to maximize short building seasons; subsidizing for affordability; and repurposing vacant land on the resort property.

Conifer Commons is located just yards away from Winter Park Resort’s Cabriolet lift, which accesses the mountain’s base area, just off U.S. Highway 40 and Winter Park Drive. Winter Park Resort wanted the workforce housing to be on the resort property, so it repurposed (and then relocated) a parking area, to ensure the complex was near to slopes, convenient, walkable, and accessible to public transportation.

Winter Travel Tips

Wolf Reintroduction Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) successfully released a total of 10 gray wolves onto state-owned public land in the mountain town counties of Summit and Grand counties, continuing the agency’s efforts to create a permanent, self-sustaining gray wolf population in Colorado. This week’s release marks the first step in fulfilling state law and the will of Colorado voters who passed Proposition 114 in 2020. CPW and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have worked together on plans, rules, and resources that allow for wolf restoration and account for possible livestock conflicts.

CPW will continue working to source additional animals until up to 15 wolves have been reintroduced in Colorado by mid-March 2024 www.cpw.state.co.us

When the Snow flys you need to be sure you are prepared It’s essential for motorists to be prepared for snow and ice on Colorado roads. In a recent survey, only 64% of Coloradans were aware of the state’s Traction Laws, with 83% of in-state residents compliant. Compared to 2020 survey results, Traction Law non-compliance increased by 10%, with roughly 75% of non-compliant vehicles driven by Colorado residents.

With 10.7 million travelers along the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels in 2022 and more Colorado drivers traveling statewide, staying prepared is crucial.

Visit this Eagle Vail ski shop’s build-your-own-hat bistro When Chris Bivona was running the Vail not-for-profit lacrosse program, he jokingly called the conglomeration of young Colorado athletes the Ski Town All-Stars. He slapped a logo on a hat and the name stuck — not only to a group of lacrosse kids, but to generations of 20- and 30-somethings grinding it out in ski towns, working hard and skiing harder, doing whatever it takes to live the powder-loaded dream.

“The name just kind of became a staple in the ski community,” says Bivona. The 43-year-old Ski Town AllStars founder and owner is celebrating his company’s six-year anniversary. He jokes about how he and his mom started making hats in his kitchen, creating quippy taglines like “Send It” and “No One Cares That You’re a Ski Instructor.”

Bivona, who is also a ski rep, started hitting up Vail Valley shops to see if they liked the product. They did. His business swiftly expanded from his kitchen to a garage to his current two Eagle-Vail warehouses and generous Eagle-Vail retail space that doubles as a ski shop 22

and hat production center. Ski Town All-Stars is churning out around 2,000 custom and wholesale hats a week, selling products in shops from Utah to New York. Bivona recently opened up a wholesale account in Switzerland and shipped a pair of skis to Paris.

“It’s kind of wild,” he says. “We opened our doors to the world.

Everyone from realtors to a pizza shop to GoPro are ordering our hats with their logos on them.”

A slim staff of eight run the ski shop and warehouses and all printing, sewing and embroidering is done in-house with sewing machines. The full-service ski shop sells Blizzard, Nordica, Fischer, Atomic and Rossignol skis, boasting the largest selection in the Vail Valley.

“Our brand is all about authenticity,” Bivona says, accrediting a large chunk of sales to a robust TikTok and Instagram following. “They see us skiing these products and they buy skis from us. It’s really snowballing.”

Ski Town All-Stars draws a range of generations with its build-your-own trucker hat concept, fun poppy colors and best-selling phrases like “Lil Ripper” and “Après Ski Instructor.”

“Our stuff’s not bland,” Bivona says.

The company maintains a strong give-back culture, working with the local community through its Ski Town Projects and Partnerships that include raising more than $10,000 in fall of 2023 for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, working with those who have suffered injuries in the wild to get them back out in nature, and partnering with Speak Up on local suicide prevention efforts.

Riding the speeding train of organic and wildly successful growth, Ski Town All-Stars strives to maintain its play hard, work hard foundation. “We were looking for a way to represent ski town culture, honor mountain town locals, and stoke outdoor enthusiasts everywhere,” Bivona says. “That’s how Ski Town All-Stars came to life.” www.skitownallstars.com

Located between the San Juan Mountains and the town of Durango is Durango Hot Springs Resort and Spa. The resort’s location is key because no matter what direction you’re coming from, there is a chance you are looking for outdoor-related recovery, and about the time you see the hot springs sign from the road, you think, wouldn’t that be nice?

AND IT IS! The resort has grown up alongside its surrounding area. About nine miles north of city limits, the hot springs themselves can claim to be at least 141 years old, but possibly as old as 1,000 years. With the first documented use of geothermal mineral waters in Durango dating back to around 1000-1200 A.D. They have probably been around longer than any of us really know, but it wasn’t until 1874 when these particular ones were discovered by a man named Frank Trimble. Trimble planted his flag, eventually built a hotel on the property, and gave the area his namesake; Trimble Hot Springs.

It remained Trimble Hot Springs up until 2019 when it was purchased and renamed Durango Hot Springs. With the renaming came a few other changes, the most obvious being more pools.

Now, the property has 40 different water features, including 32 hot springs, two cold plunge pools, and a 25-meter swimming pool, which is an exponential change, but what isn’t different is the water’s natural minerals.

Hot springs are made up of natural minerals from groundwater that seeps deep into the earth where it is heated and then rises back to the top as a spring. During its journey, the water mixes with minerals that make up a liquid solution that includes, unique to Durango, 32 distinct minerals that, according to the resort, doesn’t include that weird eggy sulfur odor associated with other hot springs. The minerals are said to be really good for our bodies and minds, but in order for water to be considered beneficial for healing it is said that it must have total dissolved solids (TDS) of over 4,500. Lucky for spring goers, Durango Hot Springs’ TDS has over 14,000.

This isn’t all by accident though.

While the process is natural, Durango Hot Springs has given nature a little boost through the use of technology.

Labeled as AquaGen, this enhancement adds one trillion nanobubbles – tiny balls of gas found within liquid that are less than 1000 nm (nanometer) in diameter – to each liter of water. This

dissolved oxygen is good for our blood and cell repair in our bodies, and it’s also good, as the hot springs states, for naturally disinfecting potential impurities in the water.

In addition, the Hot Springs also uses processes called quantum fusion, which is a magnetic process that allows minerals to stay in the water for longer.

At the same time, the process also uses a flow-through water system, which pushes water into the spring’s system every two hours, keeping everything fresh.

So it’s a bit of push and pull, and all very interesting, but the only thing our tired minds and bodies need to know is that this experience is a Nanobubble-distance away, and you don’t even need to have a full day of recreation to enjoy.

A LONG TANGENT: MUSINGS FROM AN OLD MAN & HIS YOUNG DOG HIKING EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR While sitting on a barstool one evening, writer John Fayhee was looking for his next adventure. Unable to commit to months-long journeys along a backcountry trail, he decided to commit to a full year of hiking every day with his young dog.

“As my 60 th birthday approached, I decided to do something of relative note,” says Fayhee, who now lives in Silver City, New Mexico. “I had real-life responsibilities that did not allow me to, say, attempt to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. I had to concoct a challenging scheme that I could integrate into my day-to-day life that would not incline my wife toward seeking the services of a divorce lawyer.”

“I downed a few pints, scribbled some shockingly legible notes about embarking upon a quest to hike every day for a year on a cocktail napkin, walked out to my ancient 4Runner and bounced the idea off my dog, Casey, who had been contentedly snoozing on the back seat,” Fayhee says.

“Casey responded positively to the notion. So that was that. The next day, we bushwhacked to the top of a local peak and ended up hiking for a total of 367 straight days”, says Fayhee.

THE SNOWMASS ICE AGE DISCOVERY STORY In 2010, a construction crew unearthed a single tusk of a mammoth while digging at Ziegler Reservoir in Snowmass Village. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science took over the site and went on to unearth more than 5,000 bones and fossils of large mammals and small vertebrate species including mammoths, mastodons, and giant ground sloths.

Summer 2023 sees the debut of a series of Ice Age Discovery installations, each a blend of art, science, and nature, bringing the viewer into the story through a series of different mediums around the Village, on trails, and on the web.

A variety of installations ais to balance art and science in a fun and engaging way, drawing back the curtain on the past.

The narrative, designed by the Aspen Science Center, is meant to be appealing for all ages and interest levels, with fun facts on the installations around the Village and deeper education and storytelling on the website.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS TRUE STORY.

Last night I had a dream. In the dream I was trying to walk forward against a violent, steady wind that was holding me back. I was frustrated to the point of tears as I tried to get to where I was going, only to be met with hard resistance. I could feel my muscles struggling with increased fatigue.

Out of nowhere a bald eagle appeared overhead, wings spread, gliding across the sky. Circling twice to get lower, our gaze connected. I felt a shift happen within. Instead of fighting, the eagle was using the strong movement to float along with ease, an almost effortless propulsion.

Upon waking, I marveled at how easy it was to connect the dream to my life. A large part of my past includes resistance to negative emotions, avoidance of difficult situations, and distractions to ensure both of those remained true. While I sought and found benefit in counseling for anxieties I tied to shallow and current events, true vulnerability didn’t start to emerge until almost 6 years after I began. My therapist was very patient in guiding me as I did the actions of self-work through reading, meditation, exercise, improving my nutritional intake, etc. I learned amazing tools including boundaries, misplaced responsibilities for other people’s emotions, and expectations versus agreements. Eventually, I was faced with an unavoidable loss that tested my coping skills beyond the practices I had started.

Several months prior to my own anguish, a dear friend had lost her father to cancer. She shared a decision she had made during her period of anticipatory grief, knowing this could likely be the biggest loss of her life. While acknowledging the helplessness, fear, the visceral pain, she realized she had choices. Resist, distract, avoid, and let it destroy her peace, or lean into and face it all with courage and see what growth it could provide, and what lessons she could learn.

We live in a society that tends to collectively try to avoid discomfort. Diving into “negative” emotions such as fear, sadness, embarrassment, anxiety, anger, grief, jealousy, depression, shame, guilt, and so on feels relatively new. Vulnerability is emerging as a strength versus a weakness. Her bravery spurred my own decision to do the best I could to model after her.

Working with my therapist, fellow nurse coaches, family, and friends, I started my journey with grief through vulnerability. I likened this work to a

tree, reaching my roots far into the dark soil knowing the growth below would directly feed the flourishing of the branches above. While painful, exploring the hard emotions finally gave them purpose.

It has been established that ignoring, burying, and denying emotions does not make them go away. They can cause deep subconscious beliefs we can’t put into words, and manifests as more anxiety and anger. It is never too late to dig deep, even into feelings we aren’t sure of their origin. Letting the emotions surface and accepting them with compassion for ourselves helps us write our stories in new light and remain fluid versus stagnant.

Accepting negative emotions without resistance does not define identity.

Thoughts and emotions are not who we are, but what we experience. All can move through us and are not permanent when we acknowledge and release.

Self-care practices help create space for our emotions to be held gently and with compassion. General health maintenance keeps our physical bodies in a state to move through emotions as well. While life is not one-size-fits-all, there are some general practices to help keep this alignment.

Start with compassion for YOU. We are all only humans in a temporary life.

Treat yourself and talk to yourself as you would to someone you care deeply about. Give yourself patience and grace, you deserve it.

Accept what comes up without judgment. By making space for an emotion or thought to arise, you can examine it for what it is. Leave judgment out.

Maintain boundaries. Whether it’s a work/life balance, unequal relationships, protecting sleep or restorative time, boundaries are essential. While it sounds like building walls, boundaries

create much more freedom, not fences.

The value of your peace is immeasurable.

Spend time with yourself in the present. Mindfulness practices. Meditation has been shown to ease negative emotions, gain new perspectives, and help people become aligned with feeling their worth and purpose. Many free apps are available to use for guidance.

Connect with nature. Not everyone is able to do extreme outdoor sports, and simply taking a walk or sitting outside near a tree can be healing and grounding.

Scream it out. Emotions can feel huge. Grief is especially overpowering.

Some cultures participate in wailing ceremonies, to move the overwhelming pain out through voice. Going to a remote area or even the car to scream the big ones out can be satisfying and liberating.

Find support and practice vulnerability. Opening to exploring emotions with a therapist, trained coach, and loved ones increases our connectivity to others while healing internally.

Setting down resistance and opening acceptance to painful emotions can sound intimidating and even frightening. Vulnerability as a strength versus a weakness can feel brand new.

However, lush and thriving branches keep growing with roots deep in the soil. Like the eagle, instead of pushing against the wind and facing exhaustion and discouragement, we can explore the heights we reach by letting the wind carry us into the sky.

Perhaps an even bigger jaw-dropper is the ripe young age of its much-admired sushi chef. Vail Valley native Adolfo Martinez is 24 and winning diners over with innovative presentations and simple ocean-forward offerings inside lavish, dimly lit Sakaba. Martinez grew up hanging out at the Mexican restaurant where his mother worked and became involved with his high school’s ProStart culinary arts and restaurant management program.

Back in Colorado, Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch executive chef Jasper Schneider called Martinez in for an interview, seeking a fresh-faced creative that was hungry to grow. A fast learner, Martinez worked his way up to prepping veggies and rice under Sakaba’s famed sushi chef Yoshikazu Ebina in June 2020. When Ebina decided to trade Colorado’s mountains for Miami’s beaches, Martinez stepped up.

“I was always curious growing up, asking questions, watching how the restaurant worked,” Martinez says. “I started falling in love with it. Seeing my mom happy made me happy.”

After graduating from Battle Mountain High School, the aspiring chef went on to study at Boulder’s Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts followed by

“We get a fish box from our purveyors consisting of three to eight types of fish two or three times a week,” Martinez says. “We don’t really know what’s in there until we open the box. So we get to create and play around with things.”

Delighting restaurant-goers one artfully polished plate at a time, Chef’s creations are presented in decadent succulent morsels. Sudachi zest and micro cilantro perch sweetly on delicate slices of black cypress-salted hamachi.

Jalapeño powder dusts a vibrant spicy tuna roll. A5 Japanese Wagyu is served ishiyaki style (actively searing on a stone grill) with green tea salt. For Martinez, it’s all about opening that box of fish from Japan and working his magic to find the perfect sweet-savory-spicy-umami balance. Inspiration arises from tasting the fish, knowing what pairs well with it and what kind of flavor profile he’s working with.

“It’s the uniqueness of every fish,” he says. “They all taste different and that’s the interesting part, that’s what’s fun.

I have a notebook with notes on over 70 different types of fish we’ve worked with.”

Guests clamor over Sakaba’s quality, likening the restaurant to New York’s Michelin Star establishments and, Chef says, they’re always a little stunned when he comes out from behind the sushi bar to chat them up. “Seeing reactions from guests feels great,” he says.

“It’s our servers’ favorite thing to say, telling them how young I am. Guests are always surprised.”

Martinez’s mother is rightfully proud.

“She likes to talk about it to her coworkers and everyone who will listen,” Chef laughs.

COCKTAILS If it’s edible, chances are Liquid Chef Billie Keithley has made a cocktail out of it. And that’s one of the reasons she loves working for the Distillery so much. Because of the Distillery’s special liquor license, Keithley can’t go out and buy spirits and cordials elsewhere, so she creates them herself.

Rootstalk is a modern American restaurant founded on the idea of coming home. Chef Matt Vawter was born and raised in Summit County and spent the formative years of his culinary career in Keystone and Breckenridge. After spending a period of time away from Breckenridge, Chef Matt returned to his hometown determined to open a restaurant of his own and help grow the culinary landscape in Summit County.

The name Rootstalk refers to rhizomes that are all connected via a complex underground root system. The name was inspired by the large stands of Aspen trees surrounding the community of Breckenridge. From old dormant roots, Rootstalk was opened in December of 2020 in a historic home on North Main Street in Breckenridge.

The restaurant seeks to provide “Elevated, Everyday Dining” to the local community as well as out of town visitors. Chef Vincent Monarca, an East coast transplant who arrived shortly after graduating in 1992 from the Johnson & Wales University Culinary Program, discovered Frisco and called it home. He worked for several well-known restaurants in the area. He was the Chef for a local organic market before he opened the doors to his own restaurant, Vinny’s Euro American Restaurant in Frisco.

Vinny’s Euro American Restaurant recently moved and is located on the second floor of the Frisco Centre, above the Next Page Bookstore. The floor-toceiling windows offer panoramic views of Frisco, Mountain Royal, and Peak One. An elevator to the restaurant and stairs are available for customers. You will not find styrofoam or plastic boxes for foods you want to take out. Chef Monarca believes that these efforts make the food he serves tastier and healthier for our bodies, the economy, and the planet. Vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores will find something extraordinary for their evening out.

Expect a warm welcome when you arrive, as the restaurant operates like a large family with many staff in place since the restaurant launched. The restaurant has a main dining room, a full dinner menu, and a cozy bistro bar offering small plates, appetizers, and heartier selections.

Pasta is prepared in the kitchen with all organic ingredients. All of the selections are delicious. Try the Linguine and Clams, Bolognese Ragu, or Sausage Rigatoni.

There is the Beyond Meat Vegan Sausage, Peppers & Onions, Salad Selections, and more for Vegans and Vegetarians. The Eggplant Tower with Portobello, Roasted Peppers, Provolone, and Marinara is one to try, and their mushroom strudel is a flaky delight. Gluten-free options are also available.

After dinner, I highly recommend their ever-changing dessert selections too.

I had the Tiramisu, and it knocked my socks off (it is one of my favorites).

UpstART Brings Professional Quality Theater to Ouray County Moving to tiny Ouray was like coming home for Kate and John Kissingford, who had met and married in nearby Montrose. But since then they had earned their MFAs inacting, spent time on the road in various regional and touring productions, settled into the Denver theater scene, and created a touring Shakespeare company called No Holds Bard.

But, a dozen years on, they wanted to provide a stable, rural life for their child, and they missed the spectacular beauty of the western slope of Colorado. When they moved to Ouray, their theatrical yearnings led them to produce Sharr White’s The Other Place. Kate starred, John directed. “I want more of that,” said Steve Gallion, an Ouray innkeeper and erstwhile theater professional himself. “How do we make that happen?”

A model for local theater was born.

Brooke Lestikow has crafted two remarkable cabins for cozy retreats into Colorado’s mountain town wilderness.

Following the arrival of Brooke Lestikow’s second child, the demands of fulltime work and the challenges of managing two small children became overwhelming.

Recognizing the need for a change in her family’s dynamics, Brooke seized an opportunity to channel her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. This marked the inception of D|B Dens, a venture that not only offered a source of income but also allowed her the freedom to attend to the evolving needs of her growing family.

What emerged from her vision were boutique wilderness stays nestled in the mountains of Colorado. The two cabins she acquired became the canvas for D|B Dens, designed to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

These cabins exude simplicity, with clean lines and tasteful decor that strikes the perfect balance, offering guests a homey atmosphere without distracting from the tranquil surroundings.

Having spent a decade in early education and autism, serving as the director of a school until February 2022, Brooke sought a change that would align with her family’s priorities. With her husband Doug running a construction business and the challenges of managing two small children amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic, the need for flexibility and a personal endeavor became paramount. Thus, the Dens concept was born—a manifestation of Brooke’s skills and passion in a novel form, aimed at creating spaces where guests could unwind, breathe, and reconnect.

Brooke and Doug, both avid lovers of boutique stays during their travels, understand the importance of the “little things” and exceptional customer service in making getaways truly special. Their hope is that guests at D|B Dens will feel

During the long nights of winter, nowhere does the full moon shine brighter than in Colorado’s high country. With moonlight reflecting off the snow, it’s bright enough to read a trail map. Far away from city lights, the silvery moon hangs like a lantern in the inky sky, providing enough illumination for doing just about anything at night that you can do during the day. “The soft moon glow gives you the feeling you’re seeing the world as wildlife creatures do,” said Beth Sharp, a Summit County local. “Especially under a super moon—it’s daytime washed in blue!”

Skiing

Skinning up With only the moon to guide her, Sharp spent her most memorable Christmas Eve skiing at Breckenridge. “At midnight, it was bright as day,” she said. Using skins (sleeves of synthetic material ribbed for gripping snow that fit over skis), she and friends climbed up the slope for a peaceful ski to the bottom. She advises choosing a familiar prepared run and keeping a lookout for lights of grooming machines.

Loveland Pass Skiing the pass has been a full-moon tradition for years.

It’s not uncommon to encounter 30-50 people at the 11,992foot summit on a clear night when you can see from ridge to ridge. Enjoying a picnic of wine and cheese before diving into the moon-beamed bowl, one skier said, “It’s not about getting in lots of turns. It’s about finding a nice spot to see the stars and bright moon at nearly 12,000 feet.” Take all the backcountry precautions, as this area is not patrolled. For a less risky adventure, hike the ridgeline.

Steamboat Powdercats The Moonlight Descent I did a few years ago has been tamed to skiing in the magic light of the alpenglow rather than full moonlight. Nevertheless, it is for lovers of deep snow—first tracks through meadows of Steamboat’s famous Champagne Powder at the top of Buffalo Pass. The heated

snowcat grinds deep into the forest and arrives at a remote cabin where a hot three-course dinner awaits. But first we took three or four short but oh-so-sweet powder runs. The three Alpenglow Tours (extra hour, Apres party, dinner) can be tacked on to the cat-ski day for private groups only beginning Feb. 1. Bring your camera! 800-288-0543; steamboatpowdercats.com Cross Country Pick a familiar trail, one that you hike or ski during the day, dress in layers as the weather can change quickly, and then kick and glide to your heart’s content. It’s so quiet, all you hear is your breathing and the skis hissing in the snow under them. “After dark, the snow freezes, so between the fast conditions and the hazy light, it feels like you’re flying,” said Adde Sharp, remembering childhood memories under full moons.

Snowshoeing

One of the best and inexpensive ways to experience the tranquility of the shadowy woods or brilliant peaks is to walk across them on snowshoes. It’s true that if you can walk, you can snowshoe. As in cross-country skiing, pick a familiar trail and dress in layers. I like snowshoeing up Boreas Pass Road south of Breckenridge for a spectacular view of the Ten Mile Range drenched in moonlight.

Dogsledding

Mushing in the moonlight is magical, not just for the bright scenery but Huskies seem to be more alert and run better in the crisp night air. “Moonlight changes everything,” said Lisa Mapes, guide and owner of Cosmic Cruisers Sled Dog Tours in Crested Butte. She and husband Dave love nocturnal sledding, but are not offering night tours to the public right now. However, Krabloonik Dog Sledding in Snowmass offer a Twilight Tour through the wilderness that includes a campfire with hot drinks and a chance to love on the dogs. Ice Skating

Many outdoor rinks in mountain towns stay open until 8 p.m., just enough time to get the winter moon glow.

Such is the case at the famous Evergreen Lake on Saturdays. With 8.5 acres of groomed ice, it’s the largest Zamboni-maintained rink in North America. This year they are dividing it up into smaller rinks for social distancing.

The moon reflecting off hot mineral water in the chilly nighttime air adds a new dimension to what Colorado’s Ute Indians call pagosa, meaning “healing waters” for their therapeutic value. Claudia Carbone

We close out this issue of Mountain Town Magazine honoring a wonderful friend and writer, Claudia Carbone. She was a champion for women skiers and was a wonderful cheerleader in my pursuit of crafting a magazine for our Colorado Mountain Towns and often contributed to our collection of stories. She was loved by so many. Her beautiful Obituary sums up her exceptional life: Claudia Carbone relinquished her magnificent life of 81 years on Oct. 9, 2023.

Claudia enjoyed an illustrious career as a ski and travel journalist, however her greatest work was raising her five children: Susan, David, Michael, Kathleen and Nicholas.

In addition to her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Amanda, Madilynn, John Dylan (JD), Anthony, Avery, Isabella and Leona.

She was the matriarch of our family. We will miss her dearly and she will always be with us.

Claudia is affectionately known as Nonni, our family’s version of grandmother in Italian. She modeled her life after her mother, the late Ada (Aiello) Carbone and her father John A. Carbone -- a wonderful, esteemed couple that built the foundation of family love and support Claudia so eagerly emulated. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John A. Carbone Jr., her first husband, John L. Chambers and her grandson, Galen Chambers. Claudia is also survived by her loving partner, Larry Haack, and youngest brother, William Carbone.

A Denver native, Claudia Carbone began a career in journalism when she was hired as the first ski columnist for the Villager Newspaper in Englewood in 1984 covering skiing and ski resorts. Since then, her work as a freelance travel writer, restaurant and performing arts reviewer and blogger has brought her to places around the globe and her writing has been seen in national newspapers, including The Denver Post, and countless magazines. Claudia published the groundbreaking book, “WomenSki,” in 1994. As an expert in women’s issues in alpine skiing she appeared on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and scores of other media. A crusader and consultant for women’s ski equipment and ski clinics, her writing focus was to encourage women by redefining skiing and campaigning for changes in equipment and instruction.

Claudia served as national spokeswoman for the first National Women’s Ski & Snowboard Week and is a founder of Snow Sports Association for Women. Claudia served as president of North American Snowsports Journalists Association from 2002-2004. She also was a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and North American Travel Journalists Association.

She received many awards for her writing from North American Snowsports Journalists Association (NASJA), Colorado Ski Country (Freelance Writer of the Year 1992), Westword Magazine (Best Ski Book for Women 1995) and the Denver Woman's Press Club. In her later years, she and her companion, Larry, traveled 72

around the world reviewing luxury hotels and restaurants for her blog called “Sleepin’ Around” for GoWorldTravel.com.

She was immensely proud of her Italian heritage. The Carbone family rebranded A. Carbone & Company into the largest liquor distributor west of the Mississippi. Immediately following the repeal of National Prohibition in 1933, Denver-based A. Carbone & Company launched the first licensed and bonded winery in Colorado under the label Carbone Wine. Today, Claudia and her three sons and one grandson have revitalized this legacy by selecting and producing quality Colorado wines and spirits. AC&C (CarboneWine.com) is located near the Great Sand Dunes in Mosca, CO. Claudia was the majority shareholder of this project, and it was a great source of pride for her in her later years.

Claudia’s celebration of life was held Nov. 30, 2023. She was greatly concerned for our planet and walking lightly on this earth.
